Feature the Pantomaniacs have produced an accomplished annual production and although initially only one or two members had previous stage and production experience, most others learnt their craft in situ to very professional results. The occasional mishaps in the earlier years only served to add humour to already funny shows and further endeared the group to their audiences who were appreciative of their endeavours and whose hardcore supporters have remained loyal ever since. Nowadays, the Pantomaniacs produce a slick and professional show and have through experience added to their repertoire by writing their own productions. Their January 2019 performance of ‘Billy the Kid’ offers a ‘rip roaring wild west romp’ which is sure to provide the audience with plenty of opportunity to exercise their chuckle muscles as well as raising funds for charity. Indeed, those who have participated or supported the group over the last 30 years have been instrumental in raising over £80,000 for local good causes. This has included the provision of a disability scooter, an electric wheelchair, a stair lift, two hospital type beds for home use by the disabled as well as equipment for hospital and doctor’s surgeries and the list goes on.

Dunchurch Pantomaniacs

30 years of fun!

Historically, the traditional pantomime has been delighting audiences for centuries and this year, the Dunchurch Pantomaniacs celebrate quite a milestone in their history as they celebrate a 30th year anniversary. The group formed in 1990 and ‘tested the water’ with a production of ‘Little Miss Muffet.’ So well received was the show that a second production followed in 1991 and the rest as they say is history. Each year since,

The amateur group has also nurtured youngsters and several have gone on to make a career out of the arts industry. Of course, today regulations involving the participation of children is much more stringent than 30 years ago and as such, the Pantomaniacs have embraced these changes and have appointed and trained a number of chaperones to ensure the safety of their young folk. Indeed, it is the groups determination to continue moving with the times that has led to the Pantomaniacs longevity. Whilst there can be no doubt that putting on a show like this involves a lot of hard work, ask any member of the team and you will be assured that the efforts are well worth it. Payback is certainly bountiful in the amount of fun involved and from the laughter of the audience. Battle of the Turkeys – Thanksgiving v Christmas Christmas has gone and left it’s tinsel everywhere. I know it’s there because the dog, who seems to have some weird super power, keeps finding it. He has now found so much of it that it has reached the stage where I can type this article and fish glitter out of his jaws at the same time. Don’t get me wrong here, I love Christmas. This is no article full of humbugging and grinchery. That said, Christmas day, for most of us is early rising on Christmas morning which makes everyone tired so by lunch they are either grumpy or drunk or both. Then you sit down to a meal that took hours to prepare and nobody really eats because of all the chocolate they already consumed. Crackers are pulled, and uncomfortable hats worn until you escape to the comfort of collapsing in front of the TV.

First Thanksgiving This year I also experienced my first Thanksgiving meal as a result of my brother and his American wife coming to live in England, specifically in Yorkshire. Let me tell you the difference. There were 12 of us in total for Thanksgiving ranging from young people through to my grumpy and elderly father. Hopefully he will never read this because I just referred to him as ‘grumpy’ and that would get me an ‘elderly crack on the shin from his cane’. Everyone arrived bearing part of the meal and around 11am a self-generated army of volunteers swung into action. My daughter circulated distributing drinks and making tea, I assembled my contribution and helped around the

oven. Others cut veg or laid tables or drizzled dressing on upside down cake. My cutie of a niece put her lemon bread to rise. Then (despite my inaccurate timing) the meal miraculously appeared on the table. Steaming lamb and turkey was carved. We ate, we drank, we laughed a lot. My normally ‘meat and veg only’ Father even tried sweet potato empanadas (they were amazing by the way) and in general a great time was had by all and everyone from littlest to the oldest contributed to what was a little community for a day.

Being thankful The important thing though was the reason for the meal. Thanksgiving has at its core a simple idea. You are there to be thankful for simply being there. No low-grade worry about ‘did such and such’ enjoy their present or ‘will Uncle Jim and Aunt Sue fall out’? You are there to just enjoy the company and everyone spends a few hours of simply being thankful for what they have. We could all do with that moment now and again. Just a little pause to simply have fun and be grateful you have the opportunity to do so. It can ease tension in your muscles and heart while letting your brain wander to new ideas and live in someone else’s shoes. Reading is a mini vacation for your brain!

Improved focus and concentration. Read a book at least 20 minutes a day, and you will be amazed at how much more focused you will be.

Stress reduction. Reading has a positive effect on the body as well. Reading a book can relieve stress better than taking a walk or listening to music. According to studies who read more tend to have lower stress levels. Knowledge. Books are a rich source of information. Reading books on varied subjects imparts information and increases the depth about the subject as well. Vocabulary expansion. The more you read and write, the better you communicate. Community First Responders What do we do?

Leam Valley Community First Responders (CFR’s) form part of a coordinated approach to saving lives. We are volunteers who work closely with and are trained by West Midlands Ambulance Service. Our role does not replace an Ambulance but bridges the gap between a 999 call and the arrival of the Ambulance Service. As CFR’s we attend a wide range of medical or trauma related emergencies which may include; cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, choking, epilepsy, diabetes related incidents, unconsciousness, falls and road traffic collisions.

Leam Valley CFR Group

For the last 20 months, we have been CFR’s with the Rugby CFR Group gaining experience. We will remain affiliated to them once our group is formally established in order for us to continue with training updates. The Leam Valley CFR Group is being established at the request of the West Midlands Ambulance Service to assist in coverage of the Leam Valley and outlying villages within in the CV23 postcode specifically the following villages; Willoughby, Wolfhamcote, Nethercote, Flecknoe, Sawbridge, Grandborough, Broadwell, Hill, Leamington Hastings, Birdingbury, Bourton, Frankton, Draycote, Kites Hardwick, Thurlaston, Dunchurch, Onley Park, Wolscott and if required, Barby, Braunston, Lower Shuckburgh and Napton. We acknowledge there may be an area overlap with other CFR Groups. However, when on-call, we will attend all 999 calls as directed by ambulance call centres.

Fundraising

As residents within the Leam Valley, we’ve been fundraising for the last 16 months, trying to accumulate adequate independent resources to help us formally establish the Leam Valley CFR Group. As with the majority of CFR groups, we will be a registered charity and therefore, will need to be self-funding in our own right. West Midlands Ambulance Service provide only consumable items e.g. oxygen cylinders, dressings etc.. In order to purchase, maintain and when needed, improve equipment and supplies, we do many fundraising activities. For agreed donations, we can provide first aid cover for events e.g. fetes and can give talks, demonstrations and CPR and defibrillator training.

Sponsorship, training and events

For the foreseeable future, we will be responding in our own vehicles when on call. Consequently we are looking for sponsorship for the provision, maintenance, upkeep and running costs e.g. tyres, insurance and MOT in addition to secure storage for a specific Leam Valley CFR Group vehicle. If you or your company are in a position to provide sponsorship towards a vehicle, once sourced, we would be willing to come to a reciprocal arrangement on advertising your company. Living with Menopause - What are your options? Menopause, although a natural biological process, is one that that many women find difficult to cope with. The physical and emotional symptoms of menopause may range anywhere from being mildly inconvenient to extremely debilitating. Lifestyle, physical and mental wellbeing can be quite seriously disrupted as a result. The positive news is that there are many effective treatments available, from hormone therapy to lifestyle adjustments and behavioural techniques that allow women the chance to take more control over the changes that are happening to them.

When it begins

Perimenopause is the period of transition before actual menopause occurs and it typically happens when a woman is between 40 and 50 years old. Lasting on average for four years. If you’re over 50, after one year without periods, you are considered to have gone through menopause. Perimenopause is the time when most women start to notice some of the symptoms associated with the cessation of periods. These include: Irregular periods Vaginal dryness Hot flashes Chills Night sweats Mood changes Weight gain and slowed metabolism Thinning hair and dry skin It is the process of the slowing down in the production of oestrogen in women’s bodies that causes the symptoms of menopause and for women suffering from severe symptoms that are affecting their ability to live their normal everyday lives, seeking to address this hormonal imbalance can be an effective course of action. Even once menopause is considered to have been reached, the symptoms can continue for months or even years afterwards.

HRT – Hormone Replacement Therapy

HRT – hormone replacement therapy - is the main treatment for menopause symptoms, although there are

other treatments also available. It is essentially synthetic hormones that replace the oestrogen which your body begins to lack during menopause. It can be taken in many forms including tablets, skins patches, gels and creams and your GP will discuss with you which type of therapy is suitable for you according to your general health and medical background. However, HRT is not suitable for everyone, and there are some health risks associated with it, so it is important to make informed decisions. It is also helpful to know that there are other alternatives to HRT available which can also be very effective.

BHRT – Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Where HRT is a synthetic hormone therapy, BHRT is a therapy which is a natural, plant-derived alternative and it is growing in popularity. The chemical structures of bioidenticals are literally ‘identical’ to our own hormones (hence the name), and as a result, their action is gentler on our bodies. Synthetic hormones used in HRT mimic human hormones but are not chemically identical – and it is that fact which can lead to some women suffering from unwanted HRT side-effects. BHRT treatment is typically available through private clinics, but there are some therapies that are also available on the NHS through a GP. If you feel anxious or concerned about the health risks associated with HRT, then BHRT is an alternative worth investigating. However, it is important to know that currently bioidenticals are not regulated, and there is no evidence to suggested they are safer than taking HRT. Oh sugar! (not Alan!!) Sugar addict?

Happy hormones

Can you walk past a sweet shop without becoming shaky and breaking into a cold, clammy sweat? Is the only cure to enter the shop and buy a bar of chocolate and immediately gobble it up!

Eating sugar prompts the body to release the ‘happy hormone’ serotonin into the blood stream. However, this pleasant sugar rush triggers an increase in insulin as the body strives to bring blood glucose levels back to normal, which has the knock-on effect of causing a ‘sugar crash’ and makes many crave yet more sugar, leading to binge eating.

A sugar addict is a condition that may not have been recognised twenty or thirty years ago, but which is certainly gaining more attention in today’s world of everincreasing convenience and sugary foods.

Dangerous drug? Sugar is essential to the proper function of the body. Glucose in particular is important to the brain, as it provides the only source of fuel to its one hundred billion nerve cells. But it is the ready availability of refined sugar and its use as a mood-booster to give an instant ‘lift’ that is prompting some health experts to consider sugar addiction. One senior Dutch health official has even described sugar as “the most dangerous drug of the times” and has called for health warnings to be carried on sweets and soft drinks packaging. Research has shown that sugar can affect the same ‘feel good’ brain hormones as street drugs like cocaine, and that sugar withdrawal may create the same symptoms as withdrawal from nicotine, morphine and alcohol.

This cycle of ‘surge’ followed by ‘crash’ is even more pronounced when the sugar comes from foods rich in simple sugars, like chocolate, sweets and fizzy drinks. They are absorbed much more quickly into the blood stream, causing a faster and more frequent cycle. Eating more complex sugars or carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread, cereal and pasta, or simple carbohydrates like fruit, vegetables and dairy products which also contain fibre and protein, slows down the process. According to the NHS, added-sugars shouldn’t make up more than 10% of the energy we get from food and drink each day, which is about 70g for men and 50g for women. By cutting down the amount of sugar we consume each day, we can reduce the risk of becoming addicts. Always remember to check food labels, and bear in mind that food products containing more than 15% sugar are considered high in sugar and low if they have less than 5g per 100g.

Ingredients 50g (2 oz) butter 1 clove garlic, chopped 1 small onion, chopped 3 large leeks, chopped 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 900ml (1 1/2 pints) chicken stock Small handful chopped fresh parsley 1 bouquet garni Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 vegetable stock cube

Method Melt the butter in a large saucepan on medium heat, and sauté garlic and onions for a few minutes stirring frequently. Add remaining ingredients and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. What is Red Tractor Assurance and why does it matter? It’s a small logo which carries a huge amount of significance. The Red Tractor appears on food worth more than £14bn in retailers across the UK, providing confidence to shoppers that the product inside the packaging is safe, traceable and has been produced to certain standards. About two-thirds of shoppers say they recognise it, while half say that it influences their decision whether or not to buy the product. Recent market research shows that when shoppers know what the logo stands for - and the robust standards behind it - they are twice as likely to buy a Red Tractor-assured product. “There are more than 70,000 Red Tractor assured farm businesses in the UK,” says Charlotte Wardle, the organisation’s scheme member manager. “Members are independently assessed to make sure that they are farming to the standards set out within the scheme, and can then sell what they produce as farm assured.” In some cases this means a small price premium for the farmer – for others it means that they can sell to major food manufacturers who insist on their suppliers being assured. For all farmers it means fewer inspections from government and its agencies because they have already proven to be meeting certain criteria through their Red Tractor assessment. “First and foremost, the Red Tractor logo is there to protect the integrity of UK farming – it’s the industry’s first line of defence,” Mrs Wardle added. “Being farm assured means that the farmer has consistently demonstrated that they are meeting the standards set out by the scheme.”

Funded by the farming industry, it was established in 2000 to bring together farm assurance under one umbrella rather than each farming sector running its own schemes. In 17 years it has become the UK’s biggest farm and food standards scheme, covering animal welfare, food safety, traceability and environmental protection. Standards are constantly reviewed by a range of experts from vets to retailers, farmers to abattoirs. “The scheme has to, and does, stay ahead of the curve in terms of consumer demands,” Mrs Wardle added. “The scheme’s standards are there for a reason – because we know that they are what consumers value and are willing to part with their money to support.”

Recipe

Spicy leek, pancetta & white bean stew Shopping List Olive oil for frying 1 large onion finely sliced 2 garlic cloves 4 leeks cut into chunks 2 tbsp harissa paste 400g tinned chopped tomatoes 300ml chicken stock 2 x 400g tins cannellini beans, drained & rinsed. Juice of half a lemon 100g diced pancetta Large handful of freshly chopped parsley Salt & pepper Heat a little olive oil in a saucepan. Fry the onion and pancetta over a low heat for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and the leeks to the pan and cook for

a further minute. Stir in the harissa paste, chopped tomatoes and the chicken stock. Bring to a simmer, season and then cook for 20 minutes. Add the cannelini beans then simmer for a couple of minutes to heat through. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Stir in the juice of a lemon and then the parsley. Enjoy with warm crusty bread. For vegetarian or vegan diets substitute the stock for vegetable stock and omit the pancetta. For an extra meaty treat, try adding some confit duck leg meat or slices of your favourite sausage.

Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat the oil in an ovenproof frying pan and fry the onion for about 10 mins over a medium heat until golden. Add the garlic and curry powder and cook for 1-2 mins. Next, add the grated potatoes and cook for 5-8 mins, stirring occasionally. You want the potatoes to soften, but also catch a little and turn golden in patches. Season the eggs, then pour into the pan with the peas and most of the coriander, swirling to coat the potato mixture. Cook for 1 min more, then transfer to the oven for 10 mins until the eggs have set. Sprinkle with the remaining coriander and serve with mango chutney, natural yogurt and naan bread, if you like.

Historic and interesting facts of Rugby

One of Rugby’s greatest inventors was Sir Frank Whittle, ‘father of the jet engine’. Whittle was part of the design team who rented office space at Brownsover Hall. Experiments soon began at British Thomson-Houston (BTH) in Rugby where the first jet engine, built to Whittle’s design, ran on a test bed on 12th April 1937. Whittle had produced the prototype for the engines that made worldwide air travel available to everyone.

Small but perfectly formed Welcome to The Canal Museum. The Canal Museum, tucked away in the beautiful village of Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal, 7 miles (11 km) south of Northampton, is one of Northamptonshire`s best kept secrets. Assembled in a restored historic corn mill at the end of a row of traditional canal cottages, close to a flight of locks, the museum houses the first national collection of canal memorabilia, films and displays. Opened in 1963, it was originally known as the National Waterways Museum, until the Canal & River Trust was created in 2012, taking over the responsibility and care for all canals, rivers, reservoirs and docks in England and Wales. The museum is situated on the first and second floors, above the café and gift shop. The museum is both informative and interesting with clear information boards describing how the canal network was built, prospered, declined and then found a new lease of life in the tourism and leisure industry.

There are a wealth of photographs and stories about what life was like for the `bargees’ who lived and worked on the canal network. The Museum also includes some fascinating historical canal signs, and some exciting working models of historic narrow boats, barges, butties and tugs. The vintage films helped bring the history of historical canal activity to life. From the large open `balcony` window on both floors I got a wonderful view of the canal from above. I would recommend you pick up the helpful free audio walking guide, which is included in the admission price. It helped guide me through the many stories and traditions of Britain’s historic canals. It is well worth spending a couple of hours in the museum.

It is packed with canal `ephemera’ and memorabilia, old photographs, some colourful hand-painted canal ware, canal clothes, canal tools and plenty of other information about the history of the inland waterways. The re-creation of a boat-builder’s workshop along with its specialist tools, the displays of traditional clothing and boaters’ hand - painted crafts and personal belongings was enthralling.

There is also a lot to see outside the museum including an historic working narrowboat called ‘Sculptor’, which is moored outside the museum and is sometimes available for trips along the canal. As I walked along the towpath I saw several `traditionally’ painted canal boats and picturesque thatched cottages. Most of the buildings are over 200 years old and little appears to have changed since the `Golden Age’ of canals.

The tunnel is 3,075 yards (2,812 m) long and is the longest wide, freely navigable tunnel in Europe. There was plenty of activity on the day I was there, with several narrow boats going through the locks and passing in and out of the tunnel. If you are looking for something hot to eat, a cuppa and piece of cake, sandwiches, ice cream or a refreshing cold drink, the Museum Waterside Café is a very good option! It also has one of the best collections of specialist canal books in the country, along with guides and maps, for the narrow boat traveller or simply curious! There are several other places to stop and rest including The Boat Inn, The Navigation Inn, both serving a variety of meals and drinks and The Spice of Bruerne, which is an Indian restaurant and takeaway. If the weather is good and you want to sit outside with your own picnic, there are plenty of grassy areas with picnic benches outside the museum and down the towpath by the pounds (ponds), away from the canal. In the summer months you can enjoy a ride on a narrow boat with the Stoke Bruerne Boat Co or ‘Indian Chief’, operated by The Boat Inn. I really enjoyed my day at The Canal Museum and there is plenty to do outside the Museum too! From empty field to thriving children’s farm park Nestled in the rolling countryside on the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire border is Mini Meadows Farm – a small but thriving children’s farm park in Welford. Father of three, Ben Barraclough, left the corporate world behind in 2008 and bought an empty field with a plan to breed chickens. Little did he know 10 years later he would be welcoming 100,000 visitors a year to his farm park. “It all started when I was 15-years-old,” said Ben, who grew up in Leicestershire and was born in Lutterworth. “I was looking out at a field of wheat and started to think about the cycle of food and how incredible it is that the land provides for us. From that day I really wanted to be a farmer.” Ben started to pursue his dream by working on a dairy farm and later studied for a diploma in agricultural marketing and business, but couldn’t find a job in agriculture. After 15 years in sales and customer service in the hospitality industry, followed by eight years running his own landscaping business, he moved on to breed chickens. “I had a small backyard flock of rare breed Dutch Barnevelder chickens. One night - after a bottle of wine - I decided to go big. I managed to buy 10 acres

of land literally just up the road, put in electric and water and started to increase the flock.” But by 2012, what had started as a chicken breeding business had become a small tourist attraction. “I’d bought geese for the pond, sheep to help keep the grass down, and some cows. People were coming to see the other animals, not just to buy chickens.” Ben started to charge £1 entry, took on an apprentice, built more barns and installed toilets, and in 2012 he welcomed 4,200 visitors. The coffee shop was opened in 2016, followed by the indoor play area in November 2017. “I know I’m not a ‘real’ farmer, but I do now get to work with farm animals. The best and unexpected bit is I get to see families making lovely memories and the excitement on kids’ faces when they see a cow or pig for the first time. It’s hard work but I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved in 10 years - a family day out that is fun, affordable and educational, and it wouldn’t have been possible without local support and our visitors.” The farm park now employs 26 staff and saw 100,000 visitors in 2018. It also hosts school visits, birthday parties and events.

What’s your goal for 2019 Positive difference

Many of us use the New Year as a time to plan ahead and set goals or resolutions. What would you like to achieve in 2019, and how would you like your life to be different? It’s possible to set goals for most areas of life: - health, career, social life, relationships and finance for instance. Or you might look at the different roles you play, such as wife, friend, mother, employer, and use your thoughts about how you could improve your success in those roles to help determine your goals. Only you can decide what would really make a positive difference to your life, and you are most likely to succeed if you select goals that really matter to you. There is less chance of success if you are trying to achieve something because another person wants you to.

Realistic

Indeed some New Year’s resolutions only last a few days. To make a lasting change it’s important to make sure your goals are realistic, and to seek motivation, inspiration and support to help you stay on track. Do not set yourself too many goals or set targets way beyond your reach, as you will soon become disheartened and less likely to succeed. It’s better to set smaller goals that you can add to, or increase if things go well, and build on your positive results Some people like to write their goals down or share them with others, and this can add to the accountability that individuals feel around goal setting, thus improving

their chances of success. It can also be useful to ask for support from friends, who can give you gentle reminders if you are in danger of going off track. Where relevant, you may also want to get inspiration, advice and training from others such as weight loss experts, sports trainers or personal and career coaches.

Visualise yourself

Other useful tools include imagery – this might be visualising yourself having achieved your goals, or sticking photographs which represent success to your fridge door or mirror. You might also find the use of quotes, role models and affirmations useful. An affirmation is a statement which says what you are aiming for in a positive way, and in the present tense. It helps to imprint positive beliefs on your subconscious. Finally, don’t forget to congratulate yourself when you do achieve success. Break your goals down into manageable steps, and celebrate by rewarding yourself at each milestone. Here are some useful goal related quotes:

Valentine’s recipe

Nutty Valentine heart biscuits Preparation time: 30 minutes plus chilling time. Cooking time: 14-16 minutes Makes 20-24 sandwich biscuits

Ingredients 6 oz / 170g ground almonds or hazelnuts 6oz / 170g plain flour 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 4oz / 115g butter (at room temperature) 31/2oz / 100g caster sugar 1 medium egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional) Raspberry or strawberry jam Icing sugar for dusting Heart-shaped cookie-cutters in two sizes; one small, one larger.

Method Mix the ground nuts, flour, cinnamon and salt together in a mixing bowl, set aside. In a large bowl beat the butter and caster sugar together until light and fluffy, this may be done by hand or in a food mixer. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg with the vanilla and almond extract if using. Beat half the egg mixture into the creamed sugar and butter, then beat in the other half. Continue to beat until combined. Add all the dry ingredients and mix gently by hand until all the ingredients have been combined.

Divide the dough in half, shape each piece into a disc, place in a polythene bag and chill for 2 hours in the fridge. If you want to make this ahead of the day, the dough can be stored in the fridge for 3 days or 2 months in the freezer. Preheat the oven to 190C / Gas Mark 5, and line two trays with greaseproof paper or a silicone baking mat. Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the first piece of dough until it is about 1/4 inch / 0.5cm thick. Cut out as many heart-shapes as the dough can fit. Gather up the scraps with the second disc of dough and continue to roll out the dough and cut out the cookies. Cut out the centres of half the cookies using a smaller heart-shaped cutter. Transfer the cookies to the baking sheets and bake for 12 - 14 minutes or until the cookies are golden, dry, and firm to the touch. These cookies don’t spread so don’t have to be spaced out too far apart. Remove from the oven and allow to cool while the second batch is baking. Heat up some jam in the microwave or on the stove top until it is warm. Spread half to a teaspoon-full of jam on the cookie and place a cookie with a cut-out centre on top. Lightly dust with powdered sugar before serving. If you don’t want the jam to be sprinkled with icing sugar, you can dust the cookie-toppers with the cut-out centres first, then place them on top of the jammy bases before serving.

Best foot forward

Best foot forward - Braunston Northamptonshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes from the rolling hills in the north, to the scenic vistas and amazing woodlands in the south. If you add the Grand Union Canal with its many towpaths, quaint little villages that are secreted in history it is no wonder that they call this county the “Hidden Cotswolds”.

As you walk away from the pub the first half-mile is quite an uphill climb. Once this first section is complete then you can relax for the next two miles as the terrain becomes reasonably flat and you will be rewarded with some breath taking views of the Northamptonshire and Warwickshire countryside.

All of the Adventure Geek Walks usually start from a pub or café and today I would like to share with you one of my favourite walks which is perfect for a morning stroll, followed by a pub lunch.

This route takes you back in time through the small hamlet of Wolfhampcote and its beautiful old Church of St Peter. As you look over to your right you will see the undulating hills which is classified as a deserted 14th century medieval village. You can easily imagine the village alive and the blacksmith casting shoes for horses, and the people wandering around in their medieval attire. Local legend suggests that the village was wiped out by the Black Death brought in by refugees from London.

BRAUNSTON – ADMIRAL NELSON – CIRCULAR WALK Distance: 4.37 miles Surface: Moderate Difficulty: Medium Braunston has for many years prospered from the work and industry brought by the canal system. However, this walk starts at the Admiral Nelson pub and immediately turns its back on the canal. History fact: The Admiral Nelson Pub dates back to 1730 and pre dates the canal. It was originally a farm building and cows were milked where the restaurant is today and a green grocer’s shop which opened onto the lock side was where the skittles room is now.

From Wolfhampcote, you will once again find yourself walking alongside the canal and head back towards Braunston. I guarantee that you will spot all sorts of wildlife which may include swans, Great crested grebe and perhaps a moorhen or two. Parking: The walk starts at the Admiral Nelson pub in Dark lane, Lower Braunston. There is a large car park but it is primarily for the pub patrons. If the pub is open, please pop in and tell them what you are doing and that you will call in for a drink and something to eat after your walk. The joy of sledging Such fun!!

What child, or adult for that matter, doesn’t love the sensation of sledging? Speeding down a snowy hill is the best fun ever. It can also be dangerous, which of course is half the fun. Every time it snows, sledging injuries flood the country’s A&E departments and more than half of them are head injuries, most not serious, but some deadly.

To sledge in safety, follow these rules:

Choose the right hill -The best are not too steep and have a long flat area at the bottom to allow for a gentle stop. Avoid those which end at a road or a car park, but also those which end at a line of trees, a pond or a wall! Choose the right sledge - Old fashioned sledges with wooden seats and tall blades look wonderful, but on the soft sort of snow we tend to get in the UK, their sheer weight can cause them to sink or run too slowly. Conversely, on compacted snow or ice, the thin blades travel so quickly it’s easy to lose control. Plastic sledges with a braking system work well on softer snow, but can crack on compacted snow or ice, especially if they hit a stone. Metal tray-style sleds work well on all surfaces and are very robust, but can get up considerable speed, so may not be suitable for very young children.
