World Blood Donor day June 14th Give blood Most of us have had or know someone who has had a blood transfusion. Blood donation is vital to help treat thousands of seriously ill patients every day and new donors are desperately needed.
Eight reasons to give blood: Life-saver – Every blood donation can save or improve the lives of up to three adults or six children. Desperate need – NHS Blood and Transplant needs many more donors to come forward to make sure the nation’s blood stock remain at a safe level for the future.
Are you eligible? – You need to be in general good health and weigh over 50kg to donate blood. First timers need to start on or before your 66th birthday. Check if you eligible at www.blood.co.uk Blood groups – All blood groups are needed but some such as O negative are particularly vunerable to short fall which can be given to all patients in an emergency. Young donors – More young donors are needed to better safeguard future blood stocks. You can start donating at 17. Donors from different ethnic backgrounds are needed to combat conditions such as sickle cell and thalassemia which are more likely to affect these groups.
Day-to-day needs – Donated blood is used for patients having surgery, maternity emergencies, people with cancer or blood disorders as well A & E patients with massive blood loss.
There are biscuits – Free food!! Around six million biscuits are eaten by donors every year. The post donation biscuit and cuppa are important because sitting quietly while eating and drinking something helps the body to recover.
Quick pint – If you book an appointment, the whole process takes less than an hour and you will be called every three to six months. Just a short amount of time to do something wonderful for another human being.

Historic and interesting facts of Rugby In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed, largely of Old Rugbeians. Rugby School was the only team to play in white, and the reason England play in white is that the first committee of the RFU was composed largely of Old Rugbeians. To this day only Rugby School and England are the only rugby teams permitted to play in all-white.

Child Safety Week (June 3rd – June 9th) Accidental injury Did you know that accidental injury is the second biggest killer of children in the UK. Only childhood cancer accounts for more deaths. Every week in the UK one child dies in a preventable accident, and around 300 children end up in Accident and Emergency departments every day! Children from the poorest UK families are 13 times more at risk, and are also more likely to be admitted to hospital with accidental injuries.
The Child Accident Prevention Trust Child Safety Week runs from 3rd – 9th June and is organised by The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) to raise awareness of the risks of child accidents and how they can be prevented. They provide a range of resources to help practitioners run local activities and events and promote safety messages in a fun and engaging way. CAPT stress that although the number of children killed in accidents is shrinking due to ever-improving emergency medical care, near-fatal accidents can leave lifelong mental as well as physical scars, and put families through hell.
Awareness campaigns CAPT run awareness campaigns to explain how most accidents can be easily prevented. Parents often misunderstand the dangers their children face daily. For example, a child is hundreds of times more likely to be killed crossing a road than by a predatory kidnapper.
16
But the media focus on paedophile scare-stories, so parents over-estimate the risk of stranger danger and underestimate the risks involved in more mundane scenarios. To put it in perspective, fewer than eight children per year are murdered in the UK, whereas nearly 400 are killed in household or traffic accidents. For this year’s campaign CAPT have enlisted the help of the Safety Superheroes, who will do battle with the villainous Morning Mayhem! Watch out for them in events this June.
Top tips to keep your kids safe! 1. Make sure they STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN when crossing the road on the way to school (and again on their way home). 2. Teach your kids about burn and scald risks: Don’t overfill the kettle, never use a knife to fish toast out of the toaster, take care with hair-straighteners, & always turn them off after use. 3. Make sure your child knows how to call for emergency help - they might save someone’s life!
Remember: Most safety is just common sense.
Children’s brains are their most important defence against accidents, so let’s teach them to THINK. Check out CAPT’s website www.capt.org.uk

Feel younger, sleep better, reduce stress... Have you noticed the new business in Daventry that has been helping our community with their aches and pains for the last 8 months? It’s called The Health Pod and you’re not alone if you haven’t come across it yet as it’s tucked away on St John’s Square at the back of the Leisure Centre. It opened on 1st September 2018. Steven Boston and Carla Field are the owners of The Health Pod. They both grew up in the area and have been local to Daventry for over 40 years. They offer a unique service that is new to the UK. BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy has been around for 20 years in Europe and offers tremendous health benefits by simply sitting in a relaxing arm chair while the BEMER medical device delivers a gentle, non-evasive therapy that is 100% natural. It’s currently used in over 4000 hospitals and medical facilities in Europe and in 40+ countries worldwide and is now available from their walk-in studio in Daventry. Clients have had relief from back problems, shoulder and tennis elbow complaints, neck stiffness, arthritis in hands, aching/tingly feet, achilles tendon injury, aching knee/ sports injury, muscles strains etc. It also helps many clients with improved energy levels, mental focus, better sleep,
18
digestive concerns and more. Many Pro Athletes use this therapy to improve stamina and performance while also helping with rest, repair and recovery after work outs. BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy does this by promoting blood flow in the smallest blood vessels of the body – the microcirculation. This improves the performance of the body’s own cells, which in turn favours the body’s own self-healing powers. This German medical device has many published clinical studies and BEMER is presently in a collaboration agreement with NASA to create clothing for the astronauts. Who doesn’t want to feel younger, sleep better, reduce your stress levels and have more energy? Your first session is free so why not pop along and see what is on offer there. The Health Pod are at 11 St Johns Square, Daventry, NN11 4FG and are open 9 am – 7 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 2 pm on Saturday. t: 07533 361 421 www.thehealthpod.uk.com

What do clients say about The Health Pod? I was diagnosed with Peripheral Vascular disease in my left leg in Aug 18. On 25th October 2018 I had a follow up Vascular Doppler test and my Consultant Vascular Surgeon told me that I no longer had any blockages or narrowing of the blood vessels and I’m now discharged from the hospital. I am very happy and relieved that my BEMER sessions have had such an effect in such a short time. I will continue with the sessions to assist my overall general health, fitness and energy. Terry, Daventry The pain and tightness near the site of the wound had gone and my knee felt a lot better. I really feel amazed – I didn’t think the BEMER could achieve such immediate results and I hadn’t realised just how very bad the pain had become or how much better I would feel when it was taken away. Sue, Daventry It is very easy to use the ‘magic box’ that sends electro magnetic pulses throughout your body. For my wife and myself this has had unbelievable instant results. Mark, Northamptonshire
later, I have taken none. After the intensive month I would highly recommend BEMER. Steve and Carla are extremely professional, educated and friendly. I have been able to use this therapy as a big step up in my recovery, and I am truly thankful for that. I came to BEMER to take away my back ache, and ended up with something much much better. It took away my need for prescription pain killers. Scott, Daventry I’ve been suffering with knee pain for some months now after years of issues along with a chest complaint causing constant mucus issues but after a ten day treatment plan, of 8 minute sessions I finally have relief. Kevin, Rugby I was willing to try it because my left leg has been dragging for two years while walking. After the free session I was very surprised because I could lift my leg and walk better. No dragging! I don't have to use my stick to walk now, can climb stairs better now and walk further around town. I have reduced the pain dramatically and can get down to the lower cupboards in my kitchen easier too. Gillian, Daventry
At the end of the second week I stopped taking prescription painkillers completely, and still now 5 weeks

How can you support British food and farming post-Brexit? Amid so many unknowns surrounding Brexit, one of the most significant fears among agriculture is that cheap food produced to lower standards will displace British produce on the supermarket shelves. Depending on what trade deals are struck with Europe and other countries around the world, it remains a distinct possibility that cheap beef produced using growth hormones and chicken washed in chlorine – both practices banned in the UK – could compete with British food in shops. Red Tractor is the UK’s largest food and farming assurance body and its chief executive, Jim Moseley, says it aims to become the “flagship for British food and farming” both at home and abroad. The Red Tractor logo on pack indicates to consumers how their food has been produced with the Union Flag background setting it apart from imported produce. Farmers pay to be Red Tractor assured and are inspected by independent assessors to ensure they are meeting the high standards set by the scheme. A recent study of global farm assurance schemes has found that the standards within the Red Tractor scheme are world leading. The international benchmarking study looked at prominent global schemes and concluded that the Red Tractor scheme exceeds in areas such as traceability and food safety. For example, the standards governing beef and lamb farms was found to be the strongest overall scheme in terms of breadth and depth.
20
Mr Moseley said; “I believe that this is one of the most exciting times in Red Tractor’s 19-year history. Our vision is that Red Tractor is seen by shoppers, farmers and the food industry as the flagship of British food and farming. Red Tractor is already a world-leading assurance scheme; however, we are constantly strengthening our standards in line with scientific advances and consumer demand. We know shoppers are increasingly looking for more informed choice and simple signposts to traceable, safe and responsibly produced food, which is what the Red Tractor logo provides. Increasing confidence in Red Tractor and the entire UK food industry is vital, particularly as we approach Brexit.”
What is Red Tractor? Red Tractor is a world leading farm and food assurance scheme that provides traceable, safe food. It’s an easy signpost for consumers looking for British food and drink that they can trust. Every working day in the UK, independent inspectors conduct more than 230 in-depth inspections, that’s more than 60,000 each year. You can be confident that the food you buy is traceable, safe and responsibly produced and has met standards set by experts in their field, whatever your budget or diet. Red Tractor has some of the most comprehensive farm and food standards in the world, covering more types of food and drink than any other. By purchasing Red Tractor you are supporting British farmers and food producers and choosing a world leading food safety standard for you and your family. Red Tractor does the checks so you don’t have to.

Father’s Day June 16th Father’s Day origins Unlike Mother’s Day which can be dated back hundreds of years, Father’s Day is a fairly recent concept. Many historians believe Grace Golden Clayton was the founder of the first Father’s Day in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. In the United Kingdom Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The day does not have a long tradition; The English Year (2006) states that it entered British popular culture “sometime after the Second World War, not without opposition”
Dad’s important role Most dads will receive a Fathers’ Day card on June 16th, but how many of them know just how important their role in the family is? Kids who feel loved by their father tend to have a greater sense of well-being, happiness and life satisfaction, than those who feel loved by their mother alone. A growing body of research shows that there is a clear link between fathers being involved in parenting their children well, and good outcomes for those children’s
24
development. So, as a dad, finding ways to strengthen your relationship with your child can be one of the most important ways to ensure that your kids are happy and healthy. Children whose fathers are involved in their lives are more likely to be better adapted to adult life, lower criminality and having fewer mental health issues. It seems that dads are realising the importance of their role in the lives of their children. In a report produced in 2011, 82% of full-time working men say they would like to spend more time with their family; in 1989 only 70% felt that way. And 74% of fathers report that spending time with the family or finding time for key relationships is their biggest concern in daily life.
Quality time Quality time with dad is really important too. It doesn’t have to be an expensive holiday or day trip - simply playing ball in the back garden or watching a film together is fine. Fathers who listen to their children, have a close relationship, set appropriate rules, but also grant appropriate freedoms and fully engage create a stronger bond with their children. So dads, why not use this Father’s day to get out, take the kids to the park and just enjoy being with your family.

Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and add the spring onions, fry over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes then stir in the crème fraîche and lemon juice. Simmer gently, stirring until the crème fraîche has melted. Stir in the milk and simmer for 1 minute then stir in the spinach and nutmeg and cook for a further 1-2 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Remove the pan from the heat and fold in the flaked salmon. Season to taste. Spoon the mixture into a large shallow ovenproof dish. Top with the potatoes and brush over the butter. Sprinkle with a little more freshly ground black pepper and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the potatoes are golden. Serve with steamed green beans.

Frothy hedgerows! ‘…when the cow parsley seems to grow a few feet in weeks and the hawthorn blossom is always there too… if this were Japan at a time like this, there would be thousands driving round taking it all in; here, we’re lucky, we have it all to ourselves.’ This is David Hockney describing the arrival of spring in his native Yorkshire. I love David Hockney’s work for its abundance, its inquisitive nature and for his sheer ‘joy of looking’! He has to be Britain’s most beloved living artist, who in 2012, opened an epic exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, entitled: The Bigger Picture. The exhibition featured over 150 landscapes which were painted over a period of time to capture the changes and beauty of the different seasons. I was lucky enough to see this exhibition and it had such a profound effect on the way I look at colours. I honestly don’t believe there is a time when the landscape looks ‘dull and grey’ - there is always colour in the natural world wherever we are and as Hockney says, ‘You need to look, and then look again!’ This dense white froth of cow parsley or ‘Queen Anne’s Lace’, with its tiny white flowers on towering umbrellalike stalks, looks stunning along our hedgerows, roadsides and fields during May. But although it provides an excellent source of nectar for many pollinators and insects, cow parsley is taking over the countryside! Every 10 years the Government funds a Countryside Survey and recent figures show that that there is almost half as much cow parsley again as there was 30 years ago….research suggests (article: The Independent Monday 14 May 2014) that there are two potential reasons for this increase; the way we manage roadsides today and the increased fertility in our landscape as a result of intensive farming. Years ago farmers would cut roadside verges and use it for hay so the grass and other plants would be removed,
28
but now they are mown by councils and left, thus adding nutrients to the soil making it more fertile. This is bad news for many of our native wild flowers as they thrive best on poor soil. So into this nutrient rich environment come the ‘heavy mob’…in first place the stinging nettles, second place goes to brambles and in third place - cow parsley, all of these grow so densely that our native wild flowers don’t get a look in. If like me, you love the shape and white flowers of cow parsley but wouldn’t dream of bringing it into your garden, then a great alternative to grow is Ammi Majus (Posh Cow Parsley!), a more delicate, lacy form of cow parsley which won’t invade your garden! I love Ammi. It’s so useful as a seasonal ‘filler’ flower in bouquets and arrangements, and an invaluable ingredient for summer weddings to create a natural flowing, wild, countryside style. I’ll leave you with this little poem by Mary Leslie Newton: Queen Anne, Queen Anne, has washed her lace today,(She chose a summer’s day) And hung it in a grassy place To whiten, if it may. Queen Anne, Queen Anne, has left it there, And slept the dewy night; Then waked, to find the sunshine fair, And all the meadows white. Queen Anne, Queen Anne, is dead and gone (She died a summer’s day) But left her lace to whiten in Each weed entangled way! Best foot forward
Best foot forward - Litchborough Northamptonshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes from the rolling hills in the north, to the scenic vistas and amazing woodlands in the south. If you add the Grand Union Canal with its many towpaths, quaint little villages that are secreted in history it is no wonder that they call this county the “Hidden Cotswolds”. LITCHBOROUGH LOOP – CIRCULAR WALK Distance: 4.3 miles Surface: Varied Difficulty: Moderate This is a moderate walk as the countryside in this area is quite hilly, especially for Northampton villages, but the unspoilt villages of Church Stowe, Upper Stowe and Litchborough are certainly worth the extra effort. THE ROUTE: Starting at The Old Red Lion pub in Litchborough who are very welcoming and offer a range of ales, wines and the food is sourced locally. Follow the main road towards the local play park with the glorious Grade II listed St Martins Church behind us. As you follow the footpaths signs into the park it is now a case of keep bearing right, up and down fields, across stiles, over ploughed fields, small footbridges and gaps in hedges. It is well worth keeping your eye out for all sorts of wildlife on this walk. I have often seen buzzards, kite, kestrels and wrens, as well as the gorgeous little lambs. One point to note is that you are likely to cross a field or
36
two of cows, so please be wary of this if you have a dog with you. You will see Upper Stowe in the distance and yes, you have a hill to climb before you can be rewarded with a cuppa and perhaps a slice of cake at The Old Dairy Farm. Take your time to explore the various unique selection of shops and crafts as well as the fabulous restaurant and tea room. Turn right as you leave the Old Dairy Farm and look out for another footpath sign on the right hand side. This will take you onto a little path that will emerge into the most wonderful views of Northamptonshire. Now is the time to snap photos of bouncing lambs and fantastic vistas. As you make your way to Church Stowe you will actually turn left following the footpath before you reach the village itself. Those little boxes to your right are not hedgehog houses, but beehives, so beware! Continue along the footpath until you reach the B-road, where you will turn left. There is now a short walk along this quiet road, but if you are tired then you can always take five mins on the bench and enjoy the views. Look out for a green footpath sign on the left and then once again you are on a trail of stiles, and well-trodden routes through open fields. We are making our way back to Litchborough and you can see the village in the distance. The views on the way back are absolutely amazing and I urge you to turn around every now and then to capture the scenery behind you.

As we head back, we now have a few steep declines, so if you have your walking poles with you, now is the time to use them! The final uphill into the village will take you across two large fields which house livestock. These particular cows are rather inquisitive, so be aware that they may want to come over to say hello. As we make our way along the road back into the village we can take a few minutes to explore the church that dates back to the 13th & 14th century. There is a war memorial on the green and if wanted to explore the village then you will be able to see (through the wrought iron gates), Litchborough Hall which is closed to the public and only opened during the National Gardens Scheme.

The Travel Locker…. Local to you
A Walk in the Park – Daventry Country Park I have always considered the Country Park to be one of the districts true gems. When my own children were younger, I often took them to the adventure play area for them to let off some steam and explore. As they got older, I took them for walks around the park pointing out birds on the lake, in the trees and around the bird tables. They got very excited when we spotted goldfinch, nuthatch, tufted duck, tree creepers and sometimes a buzzard complimenting the abundant species of ducks and geese. As a school teacher I enjoyed escorting young people down to the park, for nature talks from the Park Rangers. The students loved the park whether it was for science projects, environmental studies or just `getting out of school for a walk in the fresh air down by the water`. I walk the park almost every day looking and listening to the changing of the seasons. I have also seen how well the park is used by walkers, cyclists, runners, bird watchers, photographers, horse riders or families visiting the children’s play area. I usually choose to complete the circular walk which is 2.3 miles (3.7km) long but there are numerous marked and hard-surfaced trails throughout the woodlands and meadows. The walks go close to the reservoir so walkers are encouraged to stop and view the wildlife. Apart from the seating areas around the very popular children`s
40
adventure playground there are several other picnic benches situated around the park. There is also a wonderful café where you can stop and have anything from a cup of tea to a full English breakfast, if desired. There are toilets and a visitor centre displaying information about the wildlife you could see around the park. The children can also get up close to the ducks on the wooden pier platform. This year marks the 41st anniversary since the park first opened to the public in 1978, although the reservoir is considerably older, having been built as a feeder for the Grand Union Canal & Oxford Canal in 1804. Many land holdings including part of the hamlet of Thrupp were flooded to create the reservoir. As the town grew during the 1970’s, the District Council agreed with British Waterways (now the Canal & River Trust) to manage the site for recreational and conservation purposes. In 1983 a new visitor Centre and cafe opened in the old reservoir keeper’s cottage, adapted for the purpose and the park was expanded in 1994 with the construction of the Northern Way road introducing the new Wild Acres and Community Orchard. If like me, you hate the gym but want to stay fit and healthy there is also an outdoor gym in the park! The fitness equipment is in Northern Field beyond the car park near the main entrance. equipment includes a rowing machine, leg press, crossrider, air walker, skier, cycle, body twist and rider. Daventry Country Park also hosts a Park Run every Saturday morning with hundreds of runners of all ages in a 5km timed run. Participants run at their own pace and run for their own fitness, health and enjoyment. It is organised and managed entirely by volunteers and new runners are always welcome to join in. This year the park is set to see some major improvements to the circular paths, the building of new walkways, jetties and improving the café area and toilets. New equipment will be installed in the play area, including a castle-themed fort with lots of different activities, new swings and some smaller items for toddlers plus a refurbished zip wire! The Country Park is ideally situated on the urban fringe of Daventry within one mile of the town centre and is easily accessible by car, bicycle or on foot with the benefit of cycle ways and footpaths from the surrounding areas. Recognised as one of the best green spaces in the country, with its wealth of wildlife, nature trails and great expanse of water, the park really is a fantastic place to visit for people of all ages and interests. Historic and interesting facts of Rugby The Dun Cow in Dunchurch is named after a local myth. Legend has it that the Dun Cow originated from Shropshire and was a “monstrous beast four yards high and six yards long” which provided milk to the locals. A witch made it go on a murderous rampage until it was slain by Guy, Earl of Warwick.

A day at the farm is good for the soul As we move out of spring and into summer, there’s no better time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful countryside. A big dose of fresh air has many health benefits, but staff at Mini Meadows Farm in Welford firmly believe that a day outside and on the farm is also good for the soul, no matter what your age. The farm park is set in 12 acres of rolling countryside on the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire border, and is home to an array of large and small farm animals. “Our animals are the stars of the show, and it amazes me every day how much joy they bring to our visitors. But it’s so much more than just making people smile,” explains Mini Meadows Farm owner, Ben Barraclough. “We have lots of school visits, and it genuinely surprises me each time how many children tell me they’ve never seen a cow or a pig. And I don’t mean a few children, we often get classes of 30 kids and nearly all of them won’t have even been out of their city before, let alone seen farm animals and had the opportunity to feed them. I see them leaving after their visit with huge smiles on their faces, buzzing with excitement to go home and tell their parents about all the animals they’ve met and fed. Meeting and feeding the animals also builds confidence. I’ve seen children go from being terrified of the cows, to an hour later putting their hand out and feeding them

and giggling away.” But it’s not just young children that benefit from a visit to Mini Meadows Farm, which has a number of animals including cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, rabbits and alpacas, just to name a few. “We often get group visits from care homes, and sadly some of the elderly visitors suffer with dementia, but they get so much from visiting us,” Ben continued. “A gentleman came in not long ago, and spent ages with the cows feeding them as it brought back fond childhood memories of growing up on a farm.” The farm is also a surprisingly popular destination for first dates. “Some might think it’s an unusual place to come for a date, but we do get lots of couples come in. The animals are funny characters, especially Cadbury the llama who never fails to get people laughing, so it’s a great ice breaker for any awkward first date silences!” So next time you’re feeling in need of a mood boost, take a trip to Mini Meadows Farm for a dose of fresh air, beautiful countryside, and lots of cheeky animals – it’ll be good for the soul! Artisan evening pizzeria opens in Daventry Daventry’s first 100% vegan/vegetarian artisan pizzeria has opened its doors. Located within the widely acclaimed Bread & Circus Artisan Bakery, the eagerly anticipated restaurant on Sheaf Street in the heart of the historic town centre, transforms four nights-a-week into an evening pizzeria. Sited in a 400-year-old building, Bread & Circus seats 36 diners in a contemporary setting, offering a vegan and vegetarian gourmet pizza experience and serving certified organic and vegan wines as well as fresh cocktails and a distinctive warm welcome. The sourdough pizzas are made on site in an openplan kitchen by an experienced team of artisans and apprentices. From a classic Margherita to a house speciality ‘Sweet Potato & Pear’ pizza, the menu is traditional with a twist of ‘circus’. Ingredients are freshly prepared daily and combined to create familiar favourites and innovative surprises. Manager Holly Steenson, says: “In the evening, Bread & Circus is completely transformed using music, lighting and alternative seating arrangements to create a different ambience and atmosphere compared to the bright daytime bakery/patisserie. The pizzeria has its own menu with a range of delicious starters, sides, mains and fine desserts with vegan options.

“As well as being a sit-down restaurant, we offer a takeaway service. Relax and order your takeaway and chill with a glass of wine, beer or a cocktail at our bar whilst you wait, or even take a stroll around town while your fresh-toorder pizza is prepared.” The pizzeria launched with a phased opening and is now available for dining Wednesday to Saturday. Lookout on the Bread & Circus Facebook page for upcoming events and themed Wednesday nights. Holly added: “The Bread & Circus Artisan Bakery opened in early December, and while the pizzeria has taken a little longer to get ready, early feedback is that it has been well worth the wait! We welcome couples, families and groups – book via Facebook message.” Bread & Circus Artisan Bakery is open Monday to Saturday for freshly baked patisserie, viennoiserie, soups, savouries, tea and coffee from 8.30am until 5pm. Bread & Circus Artisan Pizzeria is a walk-in restaurant open from 6pm to 11.30pm, (last orders 10.30pm) Wednesday to Saturday. Bookings can also be made via Facebook message by searching ‘Bread & Circus Daventry’. Takeaway is also available. For updates, search ‘Bread & Circus Daventry’ on Facebook and Instagram. Easy on the eye and easy to use My gran once said “Age is only a number. but try telling that to my hips and knees!” I think the point she was trying to make was that her mind was still very active, but her body had other plans. She loved her home and wanted to remain as independent as possible for as long as she could. The thought of leaving her home worried her. With the cost of residential care rising, too, the desire to stay in her own homes was even more important. To be possible, modifications to her living environment needed to be made. Mobility scooters are brilliant solutions for getting around outside and stairlifts help get up and down stairs, but what about rooms we visit most that have limited space? As we get older, we need to start looking at our bathrooms differently. What was once a place to relax and unwind can become a place of hidden dangers as we worry about slipping on wet surfaces, or struggle to get safely into the bath. Great strides have been made over the years with mobility aids that reduce these dangers, but they often come at the cost of sleek design. It’s never really made sense - you

don’t lose your desire to have a beautiful home, just because you might be a bit less steady on your feet. The designers at OTTO understand this, and the new Keuco Plan range really is integrated living at its best. Shower trays made from high grip materials look great whilst reducing any risk of slipping. Shower screens that give easy access whist keeping the water in the shower area have transformed showering. Showers can be turned on and off from outside the showering area so you don’t get a wet arm and the water’s already nice and warm when you get into the shower. Support grab rails, that can go anywhere in the bathroom, are functional but attractive, making a design statement as well as making movement easier. There’s even a multi-generational seat that can hang in the shower, easily pulled out if needed, or discretely folder away when the grandchildren come to stay. Talk to your local bathroom specialist and they will be able to advise you on how best to transform your bathroom that meets your needs today and long into the future.

Basic pet care Having a pet is a fun and rewarding experience! No matter what their personality is, your pet is special to you and you always find them amazing. Pet owners should return the love they’re given by providing their animals with proper care. To make your pets happy and healthy, here are some basic necessities that all responsible pet owners need to provide:
Pets need healthy food. In order for your pet to grow up healthy and live a longer life, give them food that meets their nutritional needs! For example, the diet of a senior dog may differ from that of a puppy. Senior dogs may have problems with chewing and/or digestion. Give pets the right amount of food, too! Overfeeding your pet or giving them too many treats could lead to obesity, which could trigger more health problems such as heart disease, renal problems, and more.
Cool, fresh water to drink. Always provide a clean, fresh bowl of water to all animals in your care! Make it accessible to them by placing it near their food bowl, and remember to refill at least two times a day, keeping them cool, hydrated, and healthy! If you have fish, clean aquariums at least once a week. Failing to do so could lead to smelly tanks and sick pets!
Cozy shelter. Many pets enjoy the great outdoors, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need a safe shelter when outside! Protect dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits and more from the
68
weather by putting kennels or houses with roofs in your garden. Fresh water should also be kept outside at all times for pets when they’re not indoors. You may want to bring your pets indoors in really bad weather, or once it gets dark.
Pets require vets visits and healthy habits. To ensure that your pets are healthy take them to a local, trusted vets for wellness check-ups at least once a year. If your furry friend is showing signs or symptoms of being sick get them treated straight away. Proper diet plus exercise equals minimal vet visits! Another way to keep your pets healthy and happy is to regularly groom them (if needed). Dogs and cats may not like it, but baths, brushings, nail trims, and flea/tick removal are necessary parts of life! Pets also benefit from socialization, whether that’s regular interaction with you, having guests come over, or trips outside of the house. Expand their horizons and improve their people skills by helping them to safely experience new things! With the above tips, you and your beloved pet are well on your way to a lifetime of happiness together!

Method Slice into the flesh of the bass at an angle, snip off fins with scissors. Fill the cavity with sliced lime and half the coriander, the other ingredients can be rubbed over the fish and into the scored skin of the fish. To cook, place on a piece of parchment paper on a tray or in a dish, drizzle with fish sauce and olive oil then bake in a hot oven (220°C) for 10 minutes. The flesh of the fish will start to crack the skin when ready. Serve with braised Pak Choi and beansprouts dressed in soy and garlic.
