PREMIUM QUALITY

Located on Bank Street, in the centre of the town’s thriving independent quarter, the multi award winning Delish Kitchen has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment. As well as a new, warm, welcoming contemporary and original look Delish has a completely new menu, showcasing locally sourced, provenance assured ingredients with all dishes lovingly prepared from scratch on the premises by proprietor Claire Hopkins and her dedicated team. Old favourites, such as our range of homemade cakes and sausage rolls and artisan breads from our friends at The Revel Bakery (a finalist in the 2014 World Bread Baking Championships) appear alongside new offerings such as The Delish Burger Range, macaroni cheese plus a wide range of vegetarian and gluten free options. In addition to a new food menu, customers can also now enjoy a carefully selected range of wines and craft beers that offer the very best quality and value for money and which are sourced from small producers committed to quality and sustainability.

Most of our beers are supplied by Warwickshire’s very own Purity Brewing Company. Whilst many things have changed at Delish, what remains is the passion and total commitment to providing premium quality food and drink, including the very best coffee in Rugby, coupled with exceptional levels of personalized service. Claire and the Team also regularly host the incredibly successful Delish Bistro Nights, a monthly fine dining experience, which have proven so popular that these small, intimate events are sold out 2-3 months in advance. Commencing in early November Delish, which is available for hire for private functions, will also be open to serve premium quality food and drink from our new menu for early evening diners on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As part of our ongoing commitment to the local community, Delish continues to be an enthusiastic supporter of the towns’ charitable food bank.

Delish Kitchen will also be hosting a number of original and innovative events, such as our Taste & Tales Nights, where delicious food and drink is served to customers whilst local authors, including the award winning and Internationally acclaimed Joseph D’Lacey, read sections of their latest best selling novels.

Remember your dogs, now the season of fireworks is upon us. By Sarah Evans, owner of local home dog boarding company Wagging Tails It is not just Bonfire Night fast approaching. Fireworks go on for days around bonfire night and now Christmas and New Year is as popular. You may have already heard fireworks being set off in your local area. For many of us we enjoy the sight, smell and sound but what about your dog? Some dogs aren’t bothered and happily sleep through them whilst others love them and sit in the garden staring at the sky watching. But for a great many dogs fireworks can be terrifying and very stressful. What do you do if you dog isn’t a fan of fireworks and is one of the many dogs who become stressed and anxious during these loud bangs and bright lights? How do you keep your dog safe? It is a good idea to walk your dog earlier in the day before fireworks are likely to be set off as a big danger at this time of year is dogs becoming spooked and running away. In 2012, Petlog, the UK’s largest database for microchipped pets, recorded a staggering 40% increase in the number of calls reporting pets as missing by pet owners, or found by vets, welfare organisations or dog wardens compared to the daily average during November. Don’t forget to also check what your dog may be picking up on walks after Bonfire Night. Debris from fireworks may look enticing to a dog so be sure to check he isn’t eating anything he shouldn’t. If your dog becomes particularly anxious during fireworks there are a number of measures you can take to help her relax ranging from popping on the TV or Radio as a distraction from the noise to using a DAP diffuser (discuss with your Vet) or calming tablets depending on the severity of your dog’s anxiety.

28

If you are the proud owner of a new puppy watch the fireworks with her, and remain calm while doing so, as this should help acclimatise her to these new sights and sounds. Sadly some dogs are just not comfortable with fireworks and require us to remain as calm and relaxed as possible to help them through this stressful evening! Reptiles: elusive but not always rare! There are a total of six species of reptiles found in the United Kingdom including grass snake, slow worm, common lizard, adder, smooth snake and sand lizard. The first four of which are found right here in Warwickshire and its neighbouring counties. Despite the preconceptions, all reptiles are elusive and would much rather avoid people entirely. This is the reason they are very rarely seen despite being quite common in the local countryside. Commonly, when the word adder is mentioned, people naturally worry about the safety of children and pets. Yes, adders are venomous! But they are also very shy and take great effort in avoiding anything bigger than they are. Many species of reptile employ unique defence mechanisms in order to avoid contact with people or predators. For example grass snakes, which for some reason are unable to flee fast enough, will often play dead, rolling on their backs and sticking their tongues out, hoping to be left alone. Adders were once regularly recorded within Warwickshire, however these records are

GBa&e

now few and far between (though they fare reasonably well in Northamptonshire). This is as a direct result of habitat loss and persecution. There are still notable populations of grass snake, slow worm and common lizard within the local area and at this time of year they will be in search of suitable hibernation sites where they can shelter in waiting for spring to return. Reptiles, once emerged from hibernation around March, head in search of food and suitable breeding locations, so if you want to encourage reptiles into your garden, a large compost heap can make the perfect egg-laying habitat. A nice pond, where amphibians breed, also provides a great food source for grass snakes. Reptiles can be a gardener’s best friend with slow worms effectively regulating slug and snail populations. We should not fear these wonderful creatures as they are a fundamental part of our ecosystem ensuring the natural regulation of insect, mollusc, amphibian and small mammal populations and without which we would suffer not only economic loss within our agricultural industry but also the intrinsic loss of such fascinating animals. Doors & Drawers in Rugby has a reputation that speaks for itself. When the team are invited to do a job, they do the job properly with customer satisfaction in mind. Joan Grey has just treated herself to a new kitchen. "I'd heard good things about them so I asked my son to get me their number," said Mrs Grey, who lives in Rugby. "The owner, Ian Wyper, visited me and went through everything. He was so friendly and informative, he made sure nothing got missed out." When Mrs Grey had chosen what she wanted, it took just two and half days to complete the new look. "It looks fabulous," she said. "I can't thank them enough and I can't recommend them enough. I now have 19 high quality cupboard doors and my kitchen looks bigger and better than ever." She added: "Thank you Doors and Drawers for such a professional job from start to finish."

2 Alternative Christmas Pudding Christmas Mess 600ml double cream 400g Greek yoghurt 4 tbsp lemon curd 1 x 500g bag frozen mixed berries (we used Sainsbury’s Black Forest fruits) 4 tbsp icing sugar 2 tbsp cassis (optional) 1 pinch cinnamon 8 meringue nests In a small saucepan gently heat the frozen berries, icing sugar and cinnamon until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat, stir in the cassis, if using, and set aside to cool completely.

Whip the double cream and Greek yogurt until just holding it’s shape, ripple through the lemon curd. Break the meringue nests into a glass bowl, or 8 individual glasses. Spoon over half the cream, then half the berries. Repeat with the remaining cream and berries. Serve immediately.

Dear Santa …

Dear Santa … Forgive me writing to you this year, but I thought if the kids can write to Santa why shouldn’t I at least give it a go? I’ve been a good mother all year. I’ve baked 23 dozen cupcakes for the school fundraiser, made 7 different costumes for various school events (two of them won prizes) and worked out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s Girl Scout uniform with staples and a glue gun. Here are my Christmas wishes: I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache after a day chasing the kids and arms that don’t flap in the breeze. I’d also like a waist since I lost mine sometime during my last pregnancy. I’d love a car with fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that plays only adult music. While we’re on the subject of gadgets a TV that doesn’t broadcast any programmes containing talking animals and a refrigerator with an unbreakable combination lock would be great too. As I don’t look like having much spare time 66

in the next 18 years or so I’d like a talking daughter doll that says ‘Yes, Mummy’ to make me feel like I might be in charge some of the time and a recording of Tibetan monks chanting ‘Take your hands off your brother’ – because my voice seems to be outside my children’s hearing range (although the dog seems to hear it OK). In a perfect world I’d like at least one pair of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools and a soundproof room where I can hide to talk on the phone. If it’s too late to find any of these items I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair without interruption on the same morning – or the luxury of relaxing over a grown up dinner with my husband without a child having a nightmare, needing a drink or simply being awake at a time when it’s reasonable to expect them to be dead to the world. The buzzer on the cooker is ringing so I have to go – have a safe trip and don’t drink too much sherry. Yours Mum x
