At the Village Emporium we always try to promote and support our local food suppliers. British Food Fortnight, this September, follows this theme and aims to put British food firmly in the spotlight. The campaign wants to encourage us to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and regional dishes. To this end it takes place during harvest time, which is the traditional time for celebrating food. This year it also has the additional aim of helping our children to discover all that’s wonderful about British food. See our article on page 23 for inspiration and then why not visit one of our local advertisers for fresh, local supplies or a meal out. There are so many great local farm shops and restaurants that sell seasonal, local produce and it’s so much better for you too! Finally, whether they are going into reception or moving up to secondary school, early September can be tough for children. Our feature on page 10 offers help and advice on making the transition a little easier. Here’s to a happy and fruitful autumn!

FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL Are the dream of those first days of school turning into a nightmare? Whether they are going into reception or moving up to secondary school, early September can be tough for children. We all hope that they will love school the moment they arrive but unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. No matter how much you prepare, your child may end up frightened, overwhelmed and worried that they won’t fit in. However, with lots of support and vigilance, those first scary days of school don’t have to set the tone for the rest of their school lives. Communicate with your child Talk to your child about how they’re feeling. Children don’t always find it easy to externalise their feelings. Depending on their age it may be because they don’t have the vocabulary or because they’re embarrassed or afraid of letting you down. Ask them specific questions about their day – what they’ve learnt and the people they have met. Younger children may not understand the word ‘bully’ so instead, ask if there are any naughty boys or girls, and why. Older children need to know that you won’t judge them if they are struggling to settle into secondary school, so it is important that they feel supported by the family unit. Any warning signs? Many children decide they don’t want to go back to school by the second week. The first few days of
10
school are both exciting and frightening but the novelty soon wears off and anticipation may be replaced by dread. Stay on the look-out for signs that things aren’t going well. Does it take longer for them to get ready in the morning? Are they bright and lively or down in the dumps? It’s important that you stay vigilant so you can nip any issues in the bud before they become bigger problems. Talk to the teacher If you are concerned about your child, their teacher is your first point of contact. You can share your concerns and ask for their viewpoint. They are in the perfect position to know if your child has started to make friends, or seems to be struggling. Boost their confidence An external confidence boost can make a massive difference to the way a child settles at school. Signing them up to a music class or sports club not only comes with physical and emotional benefits, but also gives them the opportunity to meet new friends, helping them build a support system amongst their peers. So fingers crossed that after their first day at school your child is looking forward to the next day and not asking if, please, can they stay at home tomorrow!

Exploding Toffee Apples 1 Things to do with apples Ingredients 8 apples 2 tbsp of golden syrup Lollipop sticks
250 g of caster sugar 15 g of popping candy Sugar thermometer
1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Evenly peel the top half of the apples - leave the bottom half with the skin on. Arrange the apples on top of the tray and push a lolly stick into the bottom of each one. 2. For the caramel, place a heavy-based pan over a medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of water, the caster sugar and golden syrup. Using a sugar thermometer, bring up to 140°C or hard-crack stage. 3. Once it reaches 140°C, stop the caramel from colouring further by putting the base of the pan into cold water for a few seconds, taking care not to let any water seep into the caramel. 4. Do not cool the caramel for too long as you will need to be able to dip the apples into it. 5. Tip the popping candy into a small bowl. Dip the peeled half of each apple into the caramel to completely cover the exposed flesh. Allow to set for 30 seconds then dip into the popping candy. 6. Place the toffee apples onto parchment paper and allow the caramel to harden before serving.

New Beginnings: The Next Chapter Whether you’ve been married for two years or twenty, the emotions experienced after the break up of a relationship can be intense. We all know it’s good to talk, but to whom? Your family are caught in the middle, you don’t want to discuss your private life with your friends, and somehow everything you say gets back to your ex… New Beginnings: The Next Chapter offers a solution. Just one of the counselling services we offer freeof-charge to our clients, New Beginnings is a group course led by an experienced relationship therapist. You’ll join a group of 6-8 women, all at different stages of their divorce journey, in a supportive, confidential environment that will put you firmly on the road to recovery.
14
Divorce can feel isolating, and the shift in status is often unsettling: it’s not unusual to feel a loss of identity when you find yourself on your own again. New Beginnings will help you work out who you are, what you want, and where you’re going. The group leader will suggest ways of dealing with the effects of separation and divorce, and of course there will be plenty of support from your peers. Gradually you’ll begin to understand what you’re feeling, and why; and you’ll start to work through your emotions. By the end of the course you’ll feel empowered, ready to start this new chapter of your life. A place on New Beginnings: The Next Chapter is offered free of charge. Autumnal fruits It’s easy to see Autumn as just the end of summer and a pre-empt to Winter; wildflowers have passed and animals are stocking up ready for the winter chill, but for some organisms, Autumn brings the perfect conditions to bloom! Fungi – with a kingdom all of their own, neither plant nor animal, fungi have no green chlorophyll, meaning they do not photosynthesise but instead live by breaking down dead and decaying matter. The damp conditions of September and October encourage a plethora of mushrooms, toadstools and other fungi; these are an integral part of the food chain, releasing nutrients into the soil, as well as providing a food source for an array of animals. Animals which feed solely on fungi are called fungivores and this process of fungi consumption is called fungivory or mycography.
GBa&e
And it’s not only animals which depend on fungi, it is thought that up to 90% of all land plants form a symbiotic relationship with fungi. The mycorrhizae, as the symbiotic fungus is called, gains sugar from the plants and the plants gain nutrients and a better absorption of water from the mycorrhizae. A species you’re likely to have heard of which forms this kind of relationship is the truffle, found in symbiosis with oak and beech. Beech trees in particular are known to form relationships with over 2,000 fungal species! Some of which are very rare. So, this Autumn why not get out and learn about this interesting organism, with help from a professional, there are plenty of courses around.

Apple Chutney 1.5kg (3lb) cooking apples, weighed after peeling and coring 1 large onion, peeled and cut into wedges 60g (2oz) piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated 3 red chillies 1 level tbsp salt ¾ litre (1¼ pints) malt vinegar 250g (8oz) raisins 250g (8oz) demerara sugar
2 Things to do with apples
Put the apples and onion into a food processor, in batches, and whizz to chop them roughly. Put into a preserving pan or large pan. Add the ginger and put the halved chillies in a muslin bag in the pot, for taking out later, or deseed and chop them to keep in the chutney, if you prefer. Add raisins. Stir in the salt and vinegar. Put the pan on a low heat and simmer for about 1 hour until thickened and reduced. Stir in the sugar and when it has dissolved, turn up the heat and bring the chutney to the boil for 30-45 mins, until it’s really thick and the liquid has evaporated. Remove the chillies if you didn’t chop them. Leave the chutney for 20-30 mins, then pot into warm, sterilised jars, almost up to the top. Cover closely with a round of greaseproof or waxed paper and then with polythene for storing. It’s best kept a few months for the flavour to develop.

I didn’t know I could freeze that! Reduce your food waste. Use your freezer. Bread – Wrap well and store somewhere it won’t get squashed. Defrost over night for the best results. Garlic – chop and place in ice-cube trays. Cover and freeze. Keeps it fresh and stops it stinking out the fridge. Cheese – Either freeze in a block or grate it first. Defrost thoroughly before returning to the fridge or it will become dry and crumbly. Onions – pre-chop lots and freeze them in bags ready for use from frozen whenever you need them! Fresh herbs – Bags of fresh herbs often go to waste. Chop and mix with butter then freeze in small pats or cubes. Or chop and place in ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze, ready to put straight into soups and casseroles. Eggs - You can crack them and freeze in bags for cakes or scrambled eggs. Defrost thoroughly before use. They’ll keep for up to a year. Citrus fruit – Don’t waste the whole fruit when a recipe calls for zest. Pop the rest of the fruit in a poly bag and into the freezer. Defrost as required. Citrus fruits will keep for up to six months.

British Food Fortnight 20th September – 5th October Name a British dish. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding? Shepherds’ pie? Spotted dick? Now ask your child to name a traditional British dish. Can they? In recent years we have become a multi-cultural society and we’ve happily adopted pasta from Italy, curry, from India and noodles from China. While we should be proud of the fact that we’ve welcomed and assimilated these new tastes, we seem to be in danger of forgetting or ignoring our own national and regional dishes. It’s a sad fact that many British school children (and almost as many adults)have little or no knowledge of our culinary heritage in spite of it being rich and varied. British Food Fortnight exists to put British food firmly in the spotlight. It aims to encourage us to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and regional dishes. To this end it takes place during harvest time, which is the traditional time for celebrating food. This year it also has the additional aim of helping our children to discover all that’s wonderful about British food.
With global warming rarely out of the news these days it’s reassuring to know that buying locally farmed, seasonal produce is the most eco-friendly choice too. It’s comforting to know that by buying British we’re doing our bit to save the planet.
The theme is Bringing Home the Harvest. Many schools are participating with the aim of teaching children how to prepare simple meals from fresh, seasonal ingredients. High street shops, farm shops and delicatessens will also be joining in, stocking British produce and running tasting sessions and cookery demonstrations.
www.britishfoodfortnight.co.uk
There will be special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs.
For more information visit
During British Food Fortnight n Visit a local farmers’ market. n Discover your local farm shop. n Sign up to a local veg-box scheme n Shop for and cook at least one traditional or regional dish with your children. n Visit a participating restaurant or pub and try a British dish you’ve never tried before.

Metabolic Balance®
Metabolic Balance® supports the desire to adjust your weight and gain control of your body composite without feeling hungry and having to fast. The solution is all about natural food choices that work with your body. There is no need for supplements, meal replacements, calorie counting or any fat free products. The results are an increased sense of well-being of the body & mind. It leads to a healthier more vibrant appearance that improves physical and mental performance, whilst supporting your emotional state. Our Nutritional Therapist has designed various ways for you to enjoy the benefits of Metabolic Balance® bespoke to your individual needs and current state of health. For each programme you will undertake a blood test, which gives the first clues as to whether there is any evidence of physical illness or disease. The full blood count and biochemical tests will give an insight into the condition of your blood and clinical factors which may affect the function. Such as how well the liver, kidneys and thyroids gland are working, as well as making certain that blood sugars, fats and serum electrolytes are within optimal limits. This information it is not intended to interpret your pathology results, but to identify if there is significance in relation to your current symptoms when the values fall outside of normal reference ranges.
Our Metabolic Balance® Boost £475 - 4 weeks
The Boost package is design for people who only have a few pounds to lose and want to gain control of body fat, muscle mass and metabolic age. You will complete all 4 phases and will be in control of your own motivation and menu planning, your Nutritional Therapy support will be for 4 weeks.
The Metabolic Balance® Ultimate £725 – 12 weeks The Ultimate package is for those who know they need to make the change and feel they will need full support.
It is not a fad diet - Metabolic Balance® is nutritionally sound and uses real food without any gimmicky or expensive meal replacements. You eat three nutritious meals every day and choose the foods for your meals from your personal food list. With the help of the right foods and a few simple rules you establish a new regime that enables you to achieve and maintain your perfect weight. Most health issues can be addressed primarily by regulating the amount of insulin your body produces. Fat burning and weight loss occurs almost as a side effect of restored hormone balance. Metabolic Balance has helped people suffering from all kinds of health problems including: Type 2 diabetes; rheumatism; migraines; insulin resistance; high blood pressure; fatigue; high cholesterol; osteoporosis; allergies, skin disorders etc. The side effects of balancing your hormones are; increased energy throughout the day; restful nights sleep and a youthful glow from your skin as your elastin & collagen production improves. Our Nutritional Therapist, Jenny Adams studied at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition and is a member of BANT – British Association of Nutritional Therapist, her advice comes from biochemistry and clinically based approach. She says “The best thing about Metabolic balance is that it is as individual as you are. Everyone is trying to eat healthy, however what is one person’s medicine is another person’s poison”. Furthermore, we may think we are what we eat, however it is more like we are what we absorb” .

! s r e k Con Most sources agree that the gloriously eccentric game of conkers began in England, but conkers is also played in North America, Canada, Ireland and Switzerland. Success in conkers relies on good equipment. Hence you need a good horse chestnut . The best are firm, uncracked and symmetrical. Drill through the centre and thread a shoelace through the hole, knotting it securely. The aim is to smash your opponent’s conker with your own and if you achieve this, your conker becomes a one-er. From here it gets a bit more complicated. If it then smashes another one-er it becomes a two-er. If it then smashes a two-er it automatically becomes a four-er. If it then smashes a six-er it becomes a ten-er and so on. Still with me? The rules of conkers are many and varied. I rather like the one which states that if you drop your conker your opponent can yell ‘stamps’ and crush your conker with his foot. If you yell ‘no stamp’ first, he’s not allowed to do this. Good luck with that one one in the heat of battle! Dense conkers are best. If yours sinks in a bucket of water it’s a good one. Less legitimately include baking your conker in a low oven, soaking it in vinegar or coating it in nail polish are all guaranteed to improve your chances of success in open competition. The official world conker championship is held annually in Ashton in Northamptonshire. Contestants are not allowed to use their own
64
conkers. They also dispense with the points rule mentioned earlier, and no-one is allowed to stamp on anyone else’s conkers, which surely takes some of the fun out of it. In recent years the Health and Safety police have banned conkers in schools up and down the land. This is a shame and perhaps we should campaign to get conkers back into playgrounds as part of our rightful heritage.

Featuring local author, Alli Rogers
It is said that everyone has a book in them. Whilst many people aspire to write a book one day, how many actually put pen to paper or cosy up to their laptop and do just that? If someone had told Alli Rogers two years ago that today she would be a published author, she probably wouldn’t have believed them. Strangely, chapter 2 of the book was written about two years ago on a holiday in Portugal. Alli was sunbathing and enjoying a glass of wine, when the words just came to her and she frantically jotted them down. However, it was to be another six months before she had the inspiration to write again. This time the ideas and words just flowed and it was almost as if her sub conscious mind had been at work. The vast majority of the book was written on Mondays, as this was Alli’s day off. Eleven months later, the book was completed and she was faced with the daunting task of finding a publisher. Pegasus helped her fulfil her writing dream and she hopes to continue with her writing career.

is Rogers childhood as the daughter of a diplomat, spent in numerous foreign countries, followed by university and her career in banking. With warm hearted witty observation, and self deprecating humour, Rogers also explores subjects like the perils of holidays and air travel, shopping, pets, property, music, fashion trends, adapting to country life and the challenges of children. By Rogers own admission, the last fifty years have been a bit crazy. But despite everything that has been thrown at her, she has come out smiling and embraces the ability to laugh at herself and the absurdities of life.
About the author Alli Rogers, the youngest of four girls, was born in Singapore in 1962 and spent many years living abroad in numerous countries, courtesy of her father’s job in the Foreign Office.
