Alliance Foster Care Our first experience of Alliance Foster Care was a leaflet that fell through our front door. We had been considering fostering for a while and had looked at several other agencies but Alliance was different. They were welcoming, uncomplicated, and open and so we applied. We had a lovely lady come to see and take us through what we should expect and how long the process would take. She immediately put us at ease and our enthusiasm grew. We quickly learnt that we were empty nesters, our children had all grown up but we still felt that we had a lot to give. We attended the “Skills to Foster” training which was informative and gave us an insight of what was to come. We completed the foster carer’s assessment and before we knew it we were going to panel. We were quite apprehensive about this but we needn’t of worried the people were so nice and they put us at ease. Before we knew what was happening we had been approved. About this time we were introduced to a wonderful lady, someone who has been there for us all the way through; our Alliance Supervising Social Worker, the font of all knowledge. She has kept us on the straight and narrow when challenges have been tough; she has looked after us and been there for us with her advice and wisdom. It was two weeks after being approved when we finally came face to face with our young person. It was a cold sunny day in December, the doorbell rang and there she was, standing on the doorstep with her social worker. This beautiful young lady, nervous, unsure what to expect but with a beaming smile on her face, and that was our first meeting. Early days were an education for us all, she came from a country we didn’t know existed spoke a language we had never heard of and yet we were committed to look after this person, to ensure her safety, be there when she was sad and try what may to put a smile on her face. There have been many challenges over the last year but through of them we have had Alliance behind us. At the end of a text / email / phone there has always been someone there to advise or guide us to a positive
conclusion. Monthly support visits in our home giving it the personal touch making us feel as though we belong and are valued. Our Supervising Social Worker makes herself available for meetings that we attend with our young person, giving us the support we need and encouragement and know-how when we are unsure, ensuring that we and our young person are supported at all times. Training is high on the list of priorities and Alliance makes sure that there are many training courses available so that as carers we can extend our knowledge and capabilities. These are accessible with an online training company, in the comfort of our own home, or at one of their designated venues, where foster carers can meet up, learn, socialise and make the experience of learning an enjoyable one. Carers are introduced to each other through coffee mornings and support groups to tap into the experiences of others, and speakers are organised to come and talk to the groups about various topics regarding the foster carer and their young people. Activities are put on throughout the year for the children, Christmas decoration making, Easter egg hunt, trips to Wickstead Park and days out to places like TeenZone. At Christmas, Alliance provides tickets for trips to the pantomime or vouchers for a meal for their Foster Carers and the young people in their care. For the foster carers a “grown-ups” meal is organised at Christmas, a chance for us all to meet up and wind down for a few hours. Everyone is encouraged to join in and there is always plenty of smiley / happy faces. Lasting friendships are made. Fostering is all about the children and their needs, Alliance Foster Care never forget this but at the same time they realise how important the Foster Carers are. School Woes While many children run through the classroom door each day, with barely a backwards glance, others, sadly, do not find the school experience such a happy one. The occasional grumble is rarely anything to worry about, but if your child frequently seems unhappy, you may need to intervene. Early intervention can help to avoid long-term issues, and your child is more likely to develop a love of learning if they enjoy the whole school experience. There are a range of reasons your child may dread going to school, from bullying, to being shy or particularly sensitive to noisy situations. They may simply not like their teacher, or struggle with being separated from you. Try to figure out exactly what’s bothering your child, and if there’s anything you can easily do to fix it. Would arranging some play dates help them to make friends? Could changing to packed lunches ease their dread of dinner time? Do they need more quality one-on-one time with you, to help them feel more secure when you’re not together? It isn’t always easy to get to the bottom of a child’s reluctance to walk through the school gates. Sometimes they can’t explain what it is that makes them scared, or they don’t feel able to tell you. But do persevere. Try to pick a neutral time
to discuss it, and take it gently. Raise the subject when they’re feeling relaxed and up for talking, ie not right after school, when they’re tired, or when they want to just go and play. If your child is older, they may find it easier to open up to another family member or family friend, who isn’t involved in making them go to the place they dread every day. Once you have a better idea of what the problem is, book a time to speak to your child’s teacher, and, if needs be, the headteacher. They will be well used to dealing with a wide range of issues, from bullying to a lack of confidence, and should work with you to ease any problems. Do speak to your child about this first however, as you going into school could be exactly what they’re dreading and may make them clam up next time there’s a problem. The website www.bullying.co.uk has a wealth of advice for parents whose child is being bullied, including how to approach the school and how to discuss it with your child. The charity Family Lives offers a free, confidential helpline for parents on all aspects of raising a child, including issues with school. Call 0808 800 2222 or visit the website: www.familylives.org.uk for more information.

The colour palettes of the new season differ from monochrome to dull pastels to tertiary khakis and berries. Firstly starting with the Spanish sophisticated and feminine brand Isabel de Pedro. In store at Terracotta there is a strong presence of graphic design in this collection, which relates back to Isabel de Pedro’s artistic influences and inspiration. Dazzle the fashion scene with statement, geometric styles.
Secondly, Nu Denmark is another luxury brand in Terracotta which offers a sophisticated and raw look with the vision of fashion. The garments offer simplicity and are made purely of natural materials and ethical production. The simplicity is highlighted in the brand name ‘Nu Denmark’ as stated that ‘Nu’ means naked in French and ‘women’ in Chinese. The simplicity of the brand is reinforced with this translation of ‘naked women’.
Excitingly there is even more to get your hands on with another unique, London based brand called Great Plains; a brand that prides itself with high quality basics, celebrating comfort and effortless on - trend style, plus contemporary fashion inspired styles. ON THE SQUARE The Boutique Fine Jewellers Diamond, gold, silver, expert jewellery repair specialists.
Re-opening in our new location on the Market Square on 9th September. 4 Market Square, Daventry, NN11 4BH. Tel 01327 700060.
Opening of our Boutique fine Jewellers: The Jewel on the Square In July, we closed The Jewel of Daventry on the High Street, but we are reopening in our previous location on the Market Square (near the Church) on the 10th September. The reasons for closing our large jewellers were varied, but ultimately we wanted to concentrate on our core business with the selling of fine jewellery and our bespoke and repair service and we didn’t feel that such a large retail premises was beneficial to the direction we wanted to take our business, we also felt we had lost a little bit of the personal touch that we had before, so we are delighted that we are operating Jewel On The Square once again from the 10th of September where we will be providing a friendly personal service and specialising in the repair of all jewellery and watches. Our services that we provide continue with diamond setting, rodium plating, stone replacement, gold and silver repairs, valuations, watch repairs that include elite brands like Breitling, Rolex etc. Batteries fitted on all watches including sealing where required. Our Boutique Jewellers will have on display a beautiful selection of fine jewellery to include pieces in gold, silver, and stunning diamonds; but more than this, we can also help you design a very special and unique piece of jewellery whether for a special occasion – an engagement, wedding, birthday or anniversary – or as a gift to yourself. We have always prided ourselves on the trust we have built up with our customers over the years, and look forward very much to welcoming you to the Boutique fine Jewellers, whether a new or regular customer, and continuing to provide a very genuine and trusted service in the years to come.

Segway Polo:
Next World Cup to be hosted in the UK, 2017! It’s the sport everyone is talking about and it’s literally taking the world by storm. With 12 countries already playing Segway Polo at a competitive level, and some such as Germany already boasting nine teams, it’s little surprise that when the UK and more specifically the Midlands/Rugby/Warwick heard about it, we wanted to find out more…
GB Team play Steve Wozniak’s Silicon Valley Aftershocks, Cologne 2015
Learn to play right here in the Midlands/Warwick.
Segway Polo is a relatively young, yet exciting team sport which originated in the USA in 2003, when a version of the current sport was first played at a Minnesota Vikings (American Football) halftime show. However, the sport most notably began to gain popularity since 2004, when it was played by members of the Bay Area Segway Enthusiasts Group, who then developed the sport more fully, gaining teams along the way.
international tournament in Rugby, in April 2015. Warwick Segway Polo Club was then created in 2016 and is currently recruiting for players and particularly teams. Having been successful in the bid to host the next World Cup, in July 2017, it goes without saying, the UK is not only preparing to hold the greatest Segway Polo tournament of all time, but it’s also fast preparing its competitive side to challenge those overseas teams.
Teams are now gathering from all corners of the world and aside from the UK and USA, other countries with teams include Germany, Sweden, Austria, Spain, Barbados (Team Barbados are the current World Champions), New Zealand, Lebanon, Holland and many others…
Similar to hockey and horse polo, this ‘Sport of Equals’ is enjoyed by both women and men, of all fitness levels and age groups, and with all equipment provided, it makes the sport accessible to most.
The first ever match, known as the Woz Challenge Cup, was established in 2006 when the Silicon Valley Aftershocks (creators of the tournament and named after Apple co-founder and long time Segway Polo player Steve Wozniak) played the New Zealand Pole Blacks in Auckland, New Zealand, with a result of 2-2 tie. This match was then played every year since its introduction and in various countries, and is now recognized as the official World Cup of Segway Polo. The UK proudly joined the sport with its own team in 2014 and hosted its first ever
Practice sessions cost just £14 per hour, so why not give it a try? It could be the most fun you’ve ever experienced.

Feature
Broaden your horizons Have you ever considered what it would be like if you were prohibited from doing what you do regularly?... we’ve met one innovative lady who was happy to share her story about finding an alternative to keep a great life balance. For years I have enjoyed an active life - walking, swimming, gardening, horse-riding. Yes, I have other hobbies but they tend to be solitary pastimes - embroidery, knitting, reading etc. I remember having a conversation with an equally active friend about what would we do if age or health issues prevented us from continuing doing what we loved. I decided that it was time to broaden my horizons. As if by magic another good friend invited me to attend an “Open Singing” day with the Daventry Choral Society. Against my better judgment I went along and had a wonderful time. Bear in mind I hadn’t sung since school assembly! The feel good factor was amazing. It was so uplifting and a real joy. Well, there was no stopping me after that. I heard about a small choir called The JuditSingers and went along to a rehearsal. When asked if I was a Soprano or an Alto I shrugged as I had no idea. It was decided that the Alto section was a bit short so off I went to take my place. I really struggled as I soon realised that the Alto’s don’t sing the melody and I don’t read music. It didn’t help that the first piece they sung was in Italian and very fast. “What have I done?” I asked myself. I persevered for a few weeks but couldn’t get
the hang of it. A lovely soprano came to the rescue and offered to swap with me. I have not looked back since! I have now been singing with the choir for 4 years and after two years (yes, it did take that long) managed to persuade my husband to join. He even sung a short solo at our recent summer concert and is going to start singing lessons soon. We have made some lovely friends as a result which has had the knock-on effect of introducing us to some other interesting past-times. In August the choir went to Varna on the Black Sea in Bulgaria for a week to sing at the Summer Music Festival and last year we sang in Budapest. So at the ripe old age of - ahem - I can say that I am an international singer!! Who would have thought it? Certainly not me! Oh and by the way, I am still walking, swimming etc - long may it last! Bev Check out local choirs in your area if this has inspired you, maybe a church or local community choir is on your doorstep. JuditSingers – find them on facebook or call 01327 260378 / 07866 020236 for more details.

Are among a growing number of homeowners to benefit from the craftsmanship and high level of service of Doors & Drawers of Rugby. This summer Doors & Drawers transformed the kitchen of the couple’s detached house in Bilton by fitting new made-to-measure doors and drawers to the existing cabinets. The makeover has given their kitchen a modem, contemporary look. “We had used Doors & Drawers to refurbish the kitchen of our previous property,” said Rita. “We trusted them so 24 much we were happy for them to give the kitchen of our current home a complete makeover while we went away on holiday. “When we walked through the door and saw our new-look kitchen for the first time, we were amazed. We are very pleased with the final outcome, both in terms of the finish and styling and the standard of craftsmanship. “It’s just like having a brand new kitchen. It looks great and we have had no problems at all since the work was completed. We recommended Doors & Drawers after the first time we used them and we will be happy to do so again.”

National Friendship Month Where would we be without friends? It’s said that friends make the good times better, and the bad times bearable. This month, it’s time to celebrate our friendships, as September is National Friendship Month. In the UK, the month is attributed to The Oddfellows, one of the largest and oldest friendly societies. For them, it’s ‘an annual campaign to bring communities together and highlight the importance of friendships.’ Research from the University of North Carolina shows that spending time with friends can make us happier and healthier. Whilst many feel it’s preferable to be with those who are positive, supportive and share good news, some believe that having close friends who they can have a good moan to and get things off their chest with is also beneficial. Groups tend to find their own norms over time in terms of what they talk about, what activities they do and how they behave. You may have heard the expressions ’Friends are the family you choose’, or ‘You can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends’ and it’s true that some have tighter bonds with friends than family members. Many say that there is something particularly special about a woman’s friendship with other women and in 2009 the Kappa Delta Sorority decided to make September International Women’s Friendship month, so perhaps for females there are two reasons to celebrate.
But, with Sociologist Gerald Mollenhorst reporting in 2012 that most of us replace half of our friends every seven years, it’s good to keep an eye out for new friends as well as celebrate long standing relationships. For some, connections will last decades but others will be for just a certain stage of a person’s life. Some talk about outgrowing their friends or moving away from damaging peer groups for example and couples divorcing can often cause a split in friendship groups. Oddfellows are helping people to build new friendships during September, by organising a range of special activities to complement their annual programme. These include walks, tea dances and craft workshops with the theme of bringing people of all ages together over a simple cuppa. You can find details at: https://www. oddfellows.co.uk/Events/FriendshipMonth. Or you could mark the month in your own special way. Plan a coffee morning, buy your friends a gift or just take time to tell them how much they mean to you. You could also reconnect with long lost pals. Social media has enabled a whole new way of keeping in touch with those who are remote and you could also try having face to face style conversations with free calling services such as Skype or Apple’s Face Time.

Acupuncture Ancient Medicine, Modern Times
“I have been having acupuncture for 25 years and have been treated by JosĂŠ for the last four. He is intuitive and understanding and has helped me loads. At times I have compared him to a miracle worker! I honestly don’t know where I’d be without him.â€? Jo L
It’s so easy to dismiss acupuncture.
Despite decades of research, our best scientists can neither understand nor explain it. But the real question is, why have people turned to acupuncture for thousands of years? Answer - because it’s effective. The proof is in the results. And the best part? You don’t need to believe in acupuncture for it to work. I’ve been helping people to heal for over twenty years and it’s always the die-hard sceptics who are most astonished by the benefits. Unlike conventional medicine, acupuncture treats mind and body together, addressing root causes rather than just alleviating symptoms. So, whether your recovering from injury, living with pain and discomfort or simply looking for a way to alleviate the enormous stresses of modern life, you may be surprised to discover how acupuncture can help.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN PRACTICE IN RUGBY
Acupuncture is an effective, gentle therapy for:
• Managing stress, anxiety, panic and depression • Increasing mental and physical energy • Easing digestive problems • Resolving strains, sprains, sports injuries and other physical trauma • Clearing headaches and migraines • Relieving the discomfort of Irritable Bowel Syndrome • And for treating many of life’s ongoing aches, pains and tensions
The road to recovery awaits. “I’ve had acupuncture with JosĂŠ for over 10 years. He’s kept me fit, helped me over many hurdles and is my first port of call if anything goes wrong. He has saved me many visits to my G. P. and kept me off medication - I am now nearly 80!! I can’t recommend him highly enough.â€? Ann P

Osteopathy in the Midlands The Osteopathic Team at the Rugby Osteopathic Centre (ROC) have been successfully treating local patients for over 25 years. Ideal for aches, pains or stiffness in their back, neck, shoulders, hips and knees and suitable for all ages, some choose Osteopathy independently whilst others are referred by their GPs. Finding out about daily lives and routines is as key to diagnosis and prevention as understanding the physical symptoms. For example, the way we sit or carry our bags can be key contributors to the cause of our pain. Advice on staying pain free post treatment is also important – from improving your posture to reducing muscle tension.

The team at ROC includes 6 Osteopaths, a Physiotherapist, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Pilates instructor and counsellors, providing a comprehensive range of treatments between them. Phone ROC on 01788 560646 for advice or to make an appointment. Appointments are available Monday to Saturday.

Fruitful Foraging Aged 6 or 7 years I am armed with a stout stick for beating down nettles and I am wearing trousers (over shorts )tucked into wellies, a long sleeved shirt and carrying an empty bowl …you guessed… I’m off blackberrying!! Despite the fact that my Mother had already spent long, hot summer afternoons jamming, bottling and chutneying home-grown raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries; there was always room for a pound or two of blackberry jam in the larder! So as a family we would advance along the hedgerow with an array of empty bowls and basins. We were suitably dressed to battle with stinging nettles and the vicious prickles on the brambles so as to be able to pick the ripest, biggest and bestest blackberries we could find growing wild and free in the hedgerows. It was always a hot sunny Sunday afternoon when Dad could come too and we would take a picnic as our reward for getting stung and scratched in our quest to reach the juiciest blackberries. Dad was always armed with a walking stick so
he could reach up and hook down the highest brambles because they are ‘always the biggest’! Soon every container would be brimming and after removing protective trousers and shirts we could enjoy our celebratory sandwiches with pride and purple stained hands, as we admired the sweet smelling ‘fruits’ of our hot afternoon’s labour! I cherish those happy memories and I still forage daily for hedgerow bounty in my life as a florist who loves all things natural, but at this time of year I always have a handy empty pot (and a stout stick) with me because I just can’t resist a spot of blackberrying’ ! I hope you can find time to head outdoors and enjoy this bountiful season. But please be respectful and responsible, and never take more than you need - Happy Foraging! Sue x Garden Gate Flowers www.gardengaterugby.co.uk
Hedgerow Jam Here’s my recipe for Hedgerow Jam (adapted from a W.I. recipe): Makes about 2.2kg (5lbs) 900g (2lbs) approx. of mixed rosehips, haws, rowan berries, sloes 450g (1lb) crab apples 450g (1lb) blackberries 450g (1lb) elderberries 900g (2lbs) granulated sugar + equivalent weight of fruit pulp Wash all the fruit. Put rosehips, haws, rowan berries, sloes, crab apples in a large preserving pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 – 1 ½ hours until
fruit is tender. Sieve the fruit thoroughly and then weigh the sieved pulp. Wash the pan, return the pulp along with the blackberries and elderberries. Simmer for about 15 mins until the berries start to breakdown. Stir in sugar, plus as much extra as pulp weight. Cook over a low heat, stirring frequently, until all the sugar has dissolved. Now boil rapidly for about 10 mins or until setting point is reached. Remove any scum, then pot into cooled, sterilised jars. Seal, label and leave to cool completely.

September/October Gardening Tips September
September is a busy month with plenty to do in the garden as a lot of plants need chopping down and dividing. Divide herbaceous perennials and collect seeds from all of your favourite flowers, this will save you money next season and help fill in any gaps in borders. Sow seeds into pots or scatter in borders also take cuttings of your favourite plants such as pelargoniums/geraniums and osteospermum and store over the winter. • • • • •

Make sure you pick and enjoy autumn raspberries before the birds do! Dig up any leftover potatoes before slugs spoil them! Cover cauliflower, broccoli etc with bird-proof netting It is a good idea to cover ponds with netting before leaves start to fall. Plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodil, tulip, crocus and hyacinth. Keep early flowering shrubs like camellia and rhododendron well-watered during dry periods to ensure good flower bud development in the spring. Carry on feeding, watering & deadheading hanging baskets to keep them going until the middle of autumn. Before lifting the tubers on Dahlias and Cannas allow the first frost to blacken the foliage, then lift and store in straw or pet bedding after clearing off all soil, this will prevent them going mouldy.

Cut back perennials that have died down, keep on top of weeding and tidy borders .Leave seed heads for the birds and as much cover as you can for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter. Divide established rhubarb to create new plants .Trim hedges and prune climbing roses. Harvest apples and pears. Depending on the weather the lawns may still need mowing and now is a good time to scarify to reduce moss and lay any new areas of turf. Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), make sure you clear any burn diseased leaves to prevent pests and diseases overwintering. Put any other garden rubbish in the compost, try to avoid woody stems which do not rot very quickly.
Now is a good time of year to start your compost as there is a lot of cutting down to do. Buy a bin or build your own from pallets or wood. Add vegetable peelings, bedding plants, moss and cuttings from the lawn, also weeds (but not the roots), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal to help build up your compost heap. Turn the compost once a week if possible. Never put diseased or pest-ridden material (such as rose petals) in your compost, the bonfire is the best place for them to stop any spread of disease the following year. A job worth doing is to clean out your greenhouse thoroughly, this will prevent pests from hibernating and appearing next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in

COMPACT CORDLESS POWER. MADE BY STIHL. over the winter, scrub fixtures and benches with disinfectant and hose down well. Start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter onto flower borders and veg plots to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy, leave over the winter and let the elements break the clods down, making spring planting easier! Clear a circle of earth around trees or shrubs on lawns to allow moisture to get to the roots. Mulching with bark looks really attractive and if you plant daffodil or tulip bulbs it will look great in the spring. Now is the time to plant shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs as it’s the ideal planting conditions with autumns warm moist soil. Check that the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting, if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water and fill the hole with water before planting. Rake up fallen leaves and put them into a simple frame, old trug etc to make leaf mould. If left on the lawn for long, the grass will turn yellow and slugs will hide in the leaves! Enjoy these last couple of months of hopefully still warm weather in the garden as next issue we will be back on with coats and woolly hats !
