Feature

A good book for the holidays The Private Patient PD James At a private clinic in Dorset, Rhoda Gradwyn has booked an operation to remove a serious facial scar – one which she has borne for many years, but ‘no longer has need of.’ The operation is a success, but by morning Rhoda Gradwyn is dead, and suspicion falls on the staff of Cheverell Manor. Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and policeman, is summoned from London to investigate, and before long finds himself dealing with not one, but two unexplained deaths and a whole host of dark secrets. This is the latest in James’ Dalgliesh series, and it bears all the familiar hallmarks of the earlier novels – a death in a closed community, a complicated back story, and a steady move to the conclusion. As ever, the supporting characters are just as important as Dalgliesh himself – both those on his team and those who inhabit Cheverell Manor – and they are deftly drawn, with real and believable traits. For the reader, the experience is more about contemplation than guesswork – the identity of the killer is revealed three quarters of the way through, and the rest of the novel is concerned with motivation and moral dilemmas. There is also a significant amount of tying up of loose ends from the ongoing stories of Dalgliesh and his colleagues, and the ending is rich and reflective. Some would argue that James’ novels are an acquired taste, being so far from the run of the mill ‘whodunnit’ – I would say they are a taste well worth the acquiring.

The Family from One End Street Eve Garnett This 1930’s classic has recently been re-issued as a Puffin Modern Classic, and rightly so. Telling the story of Mr and Mrs Ruggles and their seven children, it has captivated children for many years and will do so for many more. This is the first in Garnett’s series and introduces the family – Dad Jo, Mum Rosie and the children: Lily Rose, Kate, twins Jim and John, young Jo, Peg and baby William. The first chapter tells us how they all got their names and sets the scene, then each subsequent section details one of their many adventures. All of the Ruggles have an uncanny knack for getting into scrapes – from Lily Rose’s attempt to help her mother with a customer’s washing, which doesn’t go to plan, to the tale of clever Kate’s lost grammar school hat, and the daring escapades of Jim and John. The book ends with ‘The Perfect Day’ at the Cart Horse parade in London, riding on Uncle Charlie’s dust cart. Each episode is beautifully illustrated with Garnett’s line drawings. This may not be the most fashionable or up to date novel, but it has stood the test of time. Any reader will find much to enjoy, but particularly girls age 8 and over will take the Ruggles to their hearts and perhaps wish for the freedom and fun enjoyed by the children in days long gone.

s a e d I y a D y n i Ra Rain catcher (age 2 and up) * Plastic bottle * Wooden spoon * Tray or plastic bowl Cut the lid off a plastic bottle and then place the lid upside down in the top of the bottle so that it acts like a funnel. Tape down the edges if necessary. Draw lines 1cm apart up the stem of a decorated wooden spoon, starting 1cm from the bottom. Number the increments from 1 up. For younger children, don’t worry if the lines are different distances apart, you just need some marks and numbers on the rain catcher so they can see the difference over time. Slot the wooden spoon inside the funnel and place the whole thing in a shallow tray or bowl. Place outside and watch the rain come down.

Blow painting (2 years and up)

* Paint * Paper or card * Straws

Drop several large dollops of paint onto the paper. Then, using a straw, get the children to blow the paint in different directions so that the paint splatters across the page. Do this several times with different colours to make a masterpiece.

Add the marshmallows and mix until they are all melted. Add the sauce to your popcorn and mix until it is well coated. Butter your hands to protect them from the heat (and the goo) and then shape into balls. Stick a skewer in the bottom and leave them to set on greaseproof paper or in paper cake cases. Tie a ribbon Make several small batches bow around the stick for decoration. of popcorn with different food colouring to create For older children go a step further create flowers, multi-coloured popcorn. butterflies and other shapes.

Out & about

The armchair gardener takes the bees under his wing “Love! Why are you wearing that mosquito net for a hat, you haven’t taken it off for three days, You look like a cross between one of Dr Who’s enemies and Neil Armstrong.” “It’s actually my bee keepers veil and I could be called out at any minute to deal with an invasive bee swarm around the village.” Well honestly I think your time would be better spent in the vegetable garden,” comes a concerned reply from the kitchen. That’s just why I’ve decided to keep bees. Apparently up to one third of the worlds food depends on bees for pollination as without them, flowers would not form any fruit. In 2010, the United Nations placed a value on insect pollination at £134 billion. Though putting a value on things is understandable it rather misses the point that biodiversity is priceless as without bees we could be in real trouble and very hungry to boot. “The Vicar is at the door love, looks very red in the face, I hope you mowed the churchyard this week.” My mind recalls the near knee high grass around the headstones and my rash promise of help 3 weeks ago. “Ok dear, he’s probably come to chat about flower arranging with you.” I reply from the lounge, returning my thoughts to our winged friends. The thing is nobody can really confirm what’s happening to our diminishing bee species but what we can do is encourage them into our gardens and provide a source of nourishment for them at inclement periods.

36

Bees like humans, see in colour and are trichromatic, meaning they see three main colours, ultra violet, blue and green. Flowers of different colour form ultraviolet patterns on their petals as a kind of bee landing pad, directing them to pollen and the plants reproductive parts. At which point the bee takes on the role of a garden cupid, swopping pollen between male and female receptors and in turn causing the plant to bare fruit. Keep things simple in the garden and unlike the missus remember bees can’t see in red!!, maybe use bold pale flowers, avoiding elaborate doubles that produce a showy bloom, less emphasis on decoration and more on pollination. Bees love the trumpet like flowers of penstemon and foxgloves and the majority of the rosaceous family that encompasses most of our fruit trees. If growing cut flowers for the house, why not mix rows with veg, encouraging bees to pollinate both crops. “Well it looks like your prayers have been answered love, the Vicar has got a swarm of bees at the churchyard.” “I bet it’s in that holly by the gate, swarms aren’t fussy where they attach themselves.” I reply with an air of confidence “No love it’s on the spire, I told him you’ll be up in 10 minutes as you already have your bee keepers hood and veil on! Good luck.”

Caring for little feet

As children grow in fits and starts, their shoes should be checked every 10 to 12 weeks. Remember that a good fitter will only recommend new shoes if needed. Never wear hand-me-downs as they take on the previous owner’s foot shape, meaning bad news for your child’s feet. And finally, make sure you throw out those too-small socks as they can restrict growth. Our feet are designed to carry our body weight and give us mobility, but we only remember how precious they are when they hurt! We should all look after our feet, but they are at their most vulnerable in our early years.

The summer holidays are fast approaching, but before you know it, you’ll be digging out those school shoes in September and realising they no longer fit. Luckily, with the help of Anne, owner of children and ladies’ shoe shop, Niki-Lu’s, help is at hand. Member of the Society of Shoe Fitters, IFRA and Children’s Foot Health Register, Anne has some top tips when buying shoes.

Niki-Lu’s, 9 Bank Street, Rugby CV21 2QE Tel: 01788 573502.

Always have your child’s feet measured by a qualified fitter and ensure that both feet are measured as they are rarely the same size. There is no standardisation of shoe sizing in the UK, so an experienced fitter will use their knowledge to interpret a correct fit. Whenever possible, buy footwear made from natural materials, such as leather and cotton. Not only will man-made material make feet perspire, leading to fungal infections, but leather footwear moulds to the natural shape of your foot, making them more comfortable.

hey... it’s time for new school shoes

Packing Tips How do they do it? When it comes to packing for holidays it takes men four minutes flat. Women look enviously at their little pile of shorts, T-shirts and underwear and wonder where they are going wrong, as they wrestle with zips and straps in a determined effort to squeeze everything in. Many of us do it - pack too much when we go on holiday - then end up wearing the same few items all week. So how can we make the job easier, quicker and (with ever stricter baggage allowances), cheaper? The answer is to remember that ‘less is more’ and to take only things we really love to wear in a capsule wardrobe that will cater for every occasion. The first step is to envisage how you see yourself spending your holiday. If it’s mainly sunbathing, all you need for the daytime is swimwear – a couple of bikinis per week plus a well cut swimsuit for genuine swimming or diving – flip flops and a loose fitting shirt to cover you up on the way to and from the beach or pool. If you plan on sightseeing or shopping, pack some comfortable sandals or pumps and a pair of shorts, cut off trousers or a skirt (neutral colours would be most versatile), and a selection of coloured tops. Before deciding on which ones, lay them out and match them up. Choose colours and styles that go together, so that you can make up multiple outfits simply by switching items around. Sarongs are also

50

a great choice as they are both lightweight and versatile and may be used as a skirt, dress or wrap, depending on how they are tied. Scarves make a good alternative and can also be used to wrap around and protect hair. A wide brimmed hat will shield your face and hair from the sun, and is also a great fashion accessory. Some fashion experts suggest you take as many dresses as you can fit in. Teamed up with jewellery, a clutch bag and heels they are great for evenings out, and are still suitable for daywear when worn with flatties and a tote bag. Remember to take at least one warm item for chilly evenings or windy locations. Don’t forget to pack a couple of pairs of sunglasses in different shapes to create a varied look. Finally, take an oversized tote bag onto the plane and afterwards use it for the beach, or when you go shopping. Follow these tips and you shouldn’t go far wrong, but if you do, after your holiday write down all the items you ended up wearing (or that you wish you could have worn!) and use this as a guide next time you pack.

Eat seasonally What to eat now – The Village Emporium style! July and August should bring some of the hottest days of the year! Apart from watering new plants and seedlings you will find some other handy hints below to help you through the summer gardening season.

Apricot

Beetroot

Look after your lawns.

Cherries

Peas

At this time of year lawns take heavy punishment, and a little time spent on maintenance will pay big dividends. If there is any moss in the lawn this can be removed with a lawn rake also pull out any perennial weeds. Then apply any of the proprietary brands of lawn fertiliser; carefully follow the directions on the box with regard to application. This will then give you a lawn to be proud of right into the autumn.

And your roses

Roses, remove all flowers that are finished, if you allow them to produce seed pods the plant will not be able to produce more flowers, instead using all its energy to produce seeds. Also remove any flower buds that are failing to open and rotting, these buds can harbour disease.

Greenhouse tips

In the greenhouse, temperatures can reach great heights at this time of the year, so shading must be introduced. There are many types of shading materials available at retail outlets, and are easy to fit.

Aubergine Chicory Fennel

French Beans

Globe artichoke Greengage Mackerel

Nectarines

Courgette Radish

Strawberry

Runner beans Tomato Lamb

Peach

Redcurrant Sardines

Spring Onion Swiss chard Watercress

Here’s a few ideas on what to sow now

July: Early July is the time to plant out your late cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprout plants. Also remember to dust the stems with an anti cabbage root fly preparation soon after planting. Cabbage root fly lay their eggs in the stem, then the hatching maggots eat their way down to the roots and by eating the roots destroy the plant. August: Now is the time to pinch out the centre shoot of your tomato plants, in order to concentrate the plants growing energy on filling out the existing tomatoes, rather than producing more growth and more flowers.
