Be smart and safe this summer Summer will be here shortly, “we hope”. Unfortunately house break-ins increase during this time of the year. Here at Smarter Security Solutions we are fully aware of the impact a break-in can have at any time of the year especially in the summer during holidays season. When people are relaxing in the garden and trying to keep the house cool.
When it’s time to go on holiday
Smarter Security would like to give you some tips on how to make your home safer during this summer period.
8.
1. 2. 3. 4.
Make sure all your doors and down stairs windows are secured at night. When you go out don’t leave upstairs windows open even with a set alarm, any draughts could cause false alarms. Don’t leave large front windows open if you are going to be in the garden Secure any ladders, so they can’t be used for upstairs windows.
5. 6. 7.
Inform a trusted neighbour you are going on holiday Put lights on to time clocks to come on during the night Leave a car on the drive or ask a neighbour to use the drive while you are away If you’re going abroad don’t put your home address on the luggage label
Smarter Security Systems would like to wish you all a safe and happy summer holiday. www.smartersecurity.co.uk

Home Makeover Experts Launch Warwick Showroom With more than 200 showrooms across four continents and around 8,000 kitchen and bathroom installations carried out globally each month, Granite Transformations lays claim to being the world’s leading home transformations company. Its tough, slimline and lastingly beautiful kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces will instantly transform outdated décor and come with an unrivalled lifetime material warranty. So news that a Granite Transformations showroom is opening locally at Hatton Country World in Warwick will be of interest to house-proud homeowners looking for high quality, low cost kitchen and bathroom makeovers. With dozens of different Italian granite, quartz and eco-friendly recycled glass worktop designs and colours to choose from, plus replacement cabinet doors and glass mosaic splashbacks, there’s a delightful new look for every home. “We know that people in the area appreciate quality, value and good design, so many will already be aware of the Granite Transformations name
and reputation. But seeing is believing, so our new showroom allows householders to touch and feel our beautiful, hardwearing surfaces and view all the stylish colours we offer,” says showroom owner Jason Ball. Affordability is one key to Granite Transformations’ market success, with a complete kitchen makeover, including worktops, replacement doors, drawer fronts, sink units and monobloc taps, typically costing less than half the price of new fitted units. If you’re considering a kitchen or bathroom makeover, but thought you might not have the necessary budget, then the Granite Transformations store at Hatton Country World, Warwick, is well worth checking out. You can talk to their makeover experts, review all the material and colour options, and have a free design consultation. Yet another satisfied customer for local kitchen company
Rita and Lou Hoare Are among a growing number of homeowners to benefit from the craftsmanship and high level of service of Doors & Drawers of Rugby. This summer Doors & Drawers transformed the kitchen of the couple’s detached house in Bilton by fitting new made-to-measure doors and drawers to the existing cabinets. The makeover has given their kitchen a modem, contemporary look. “We had used Doors & Drawers to refurbish the kitchen of our previous property,” said Rita. “We trusted them so much we were happy for them to give the kitchen of our current home a complete makeover while we went away on holiday. “When we walked through the door and saw our new-look kitchen for the first time, we were amazed. We are very pleased with the final outcome, both in terms of the finish and styling and the standard of craftsmanship. “It’s just like having a brand new kitchen. It looks great and we have had no problems at all since the work was completed. We recommended Doors & Drawers after the first time we used them and we will be happy to do so again.”

Hold your own family mini olympics It’s that time again, yes it really has been 4 years and now the Olympics are back. The 2016 Summer Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro from August 5th to 21st and this years event will have a record amount of sports and countries taking part.
Don’t let the athletes have all the fun! The Olympic Games provide the perfect excuse to rally your family for some good, oldfashioned outdoor activities and a little healthy competition. You don’t need much to organise your own mini olympics, just a few easy-to-find props and some open space. For best results, choose challenges that play to a variety of strengths and abilities.
Olympic Mascots Every Olympic Games has its mascots, and every team has their mascots too. Younger team members could have fun dressing up teddies and other toys to support their team!
Opening Ceremony Have your own opening ceremony. Get the kids busy making flags, hats and mascots, then parade around to display their creations. Play some good marching music or the theme tune from The Archers...
Indoor Games: • • • • • •
Paper plane folding and throwing Hoopla Basket ball Obstacle course Discus (using paper plates) Simple gymnastics displays
Outdoor Games: •
Water fights
Divide Into Teams Assign a country to each team - perhaps by picking names out of a hat. Specifying a colour for each team works well and you could always ask everyone to turn up wearing a T-shirt in their team’s colour to help with identification.

Party-time in Rio! The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be held from August 5th to 21st and will be the first Games to be hosted in South America.
•
• • • • • •
Throw the bean bag or sock (push a tennis ball into the toe of a sock and tie the other end). Of course you could throw practically anything - including wellies if it is a wet sort of day! Basketball Running races or all sorts, including distance races, three legged races, egg and spoon races, sack races and relay races Obstacle course Discus using frisbees High jump and/or long jump Tug ‘o’ war
You could also hold table tennis, badminton and tennis tournaments if you have the equipment
Medals and Closing Ceremony: Of course no Olympic Games can be complete without awarding medals and a closing ceremony. If possible, find some boxes so that medal winners can stand high to get their applause! Older kids will accept that there are winners (and losers) in every event, but for younger children you should plan to give every child a medal for something.
It will also be the third Games to be held in the southern hemisphere and will see close to 11,000 athletes from 206 nations compete across 306 events in 28 sports. Around 350 athletes will represent Team GB at Rio 2016. The Rio Olympics will be held in four venues in Rio, Brazil: Deodoro, Barra, Copacabana and Maracana - the site of the Olympic Stadium. A fleet of 21 jumbo jets would be required to fly all 10,500 athletes out to Rio. That’s a total space the size of 21 football pitches. Also in attendance will be 315 horses more than enough horses to fill a Grand National field seven times over. About 140,000 people are needed to host the Games in August. Of those, 90,000 will be employees with a further 50,000 volunteers.

Travel the world on a gastronomic tour with Ferguson’s Restaurant Come and discover the culinary delights of food from around the world at Ferguson’s Restaurant. Tucked away just off Church Road, behind The Merchants in Rugby, you can travel the culinary world once a month with David and his team or stay closer to home with the regular choice of ever changing menus. The gastronomic tour kicked off in May with a traditional Scottish night, David Ferguson is from Glasgow so that made total sense! We were there to sample the Scottish evening and it did not disappoint. There was subtle live music to accompany the menu, then some great impromptu dancing. June featured the delights of traditional English food.
Where to next?
The following dates for the next leg of the Taste of the World tour are as follows, but booking early is strongly advised, on 01788 550222. 22nd July – Brazil, expect a fantastic meat extravaganza, and weather permitting it will use the walled courtyard. 19th August – Spain, great local produce to celebrate this wonderful palette of food.
Closer to home
If you’ve not yet experienced the culinary delights of Ferguson’s Restaurant, you should try their regular menu. It hosts a variety of British and European inspired cuisine with a focus on what’s in season. The experience starts as soon as you enter Ferguson’s and the first thing you see after being greeted by one of the friendly staff is the open view kitchen with chef’s busily preparing food. This is great as it give you the chance to see David, Mark & Tom hard at work. It is obvious from David and his kitchen brigade that there is passion about the food they are preparing and serving.
The seasonal menus are culinary masterpieces which look so inviting on your plate. The flavours, textures and presentation do not disappoint and are so worthy of their mention in the Michelin Guide 2016 that David and the team have worked hard to achieve. Ferguson’s Restaurant is a converted warehouse set in the heart of Rugby’s town centre. Simply decorated with bare brick grey & white walls, wooden floors and soft lighting there is also seating available upstairs so has the capacity to accommodate 60 diners. This brasserie style restaurant offers modern British and European cuisine using quality seasonal & local produce. The walled courtyard is ideal to sit out in during the summer months. 10 things you might not know about wasps
Wasps… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures.
• There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual Ruby-Tailed Wasp. • The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) • While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather antisocial. • They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. • The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. • While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil,
• • • •
for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer. While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black. Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest. An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year.
Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Try your local council first, as many provide pest control services. If yours doesn’t, search online or in the Yellow Pages for pest control companies. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help.

Hillcrest Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Group The Hillcrest RDA Group was formed in 1994 to provide somewhere safe for disabled riders from the Daventry area to come each week and learn to ride. It began taking rides at Hillcrest Farm Riding School, just outside Priors Marston. The initial intake of riders were brought each week on a Tuesday from the Daventry Tertiary College by a social worker and included our longest standing rider Peter. Lee joined a couple of years later and these two gentlemen still ride with the group today. The group relies solely on the support of volunteers, who provide the instruction, leaders and side helpers for the riders. Gina Collins, one of the original helpers continues as treasurer of the Group. The Hillcrest Group was initially run by Jeannie Eastwood until her death in 2005. Lessons now take place at Woodbine Stables in Grandborough, which is ideally located and provides a range of wonderful horses and ponies, highly suitable for the riders, as they have given them the confidence to learn new skills. Around 2009 instructor Clare Grant was asked by Social Services if the group could provide another RDA session and the Wednesday group was born. Lessons have continued twice weekly, with two groups of five to six riders coming each week.
The riders disabilities are quite varied, but all have come on tremendously with their riding, coordination, verbal communication and interaction. Within the hourly lessons the riders work with their instructors and side helpers to develop their understanding of commands and use of their arms and legs. The mounted games sessions at the end are always tremendous fun for everyone involved and a great competitive spirit is shown. In addition to the weekly lessons we occasionally are able to take the riders for extra activities, which have included holidays away and carriage driving sessions. We are always looking for volunteer helpers to join either the Tuesday or Wednesday lessons, if interested please call: 07710 770594.

Wimbledon Facts Wimbledon fortnight is the annual event which enthuses even non-tennis-lovers.
Here are some Wimbledon facts to muse on as you enjoy the matches. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass, which is cut to exactly 8mm for the competition. There is a strict dress code. Players must dress in mainly white clothing and umpires request them to comply. Even Roger Federer was asked to change his shoes because they had orange soles! There are 250 ball boys and girls (known as BBGs) at Wimbledon. Their average age is 15. They are all volunteers selected from participating schools. Historically only boys were selected but in 1977 girls were used for the first time though it was only in 1985 they were allowed to appear on centre court. More than 50 000 tennis are balls used at Wimbledon every year! 700 or so go missing when they accidentally fly into the crowd. Balls are replaced every 7-9 games, and those not in use are stored in special refrigerated containers to make sure they are kept in peak condition.
Wimbledon is synonymous with strawberries and more than 140 000 tubs will be consumed by spectators this year. Players on the other hand prefer bananas for energy and will consume around 15000 of them!

Here comes summer (hopefully!!) Regularly dead-head bedding plants and flowering perennials to keep continuous blooms so you can sit and enjoy once all of your jobs in the garden are done. Keep new plants wellwatered, use water from water butts if possible as it’s free, hoe off or dig out weeds on a regular basis. Plants are now safe to go outdoors if they have been in for the winter months now that it is warm and there is no further threat of frosts. Apply a liquid summer lawn fertiliser to feed it especially if a spring feed was not given. A feed and weed product can be useful if there are weeds present in the lawn, this will kill off the weeds but not the grass. Mow regularly unless we have a drought, set the mower at a higher level if it is really hot to help prevent the lawn drying out and turning brown. Water thoroughly at the base of the plant once or twice a week rather than little and often, this will encourage plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface and it will save you time. Containers and hanging baskets do need watering every day though as a lot of water is lost when it drips out the bottom. Don’t forget to pick courgettes as they will soon transform into marrows!! Plant out sprouting broccoli, winter cabbages, hardy cauliflowers, kale, leeks and brussel sprouts. Keep ponds topped up and clear algae, blanket weed and fallen leaves regularly to prevent the water from going murky. It’s a good time of year to paint woodwork and pressure wash any moss and algae off decking to prevent slipping.

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year, watering is essential to keep plants blooming, but water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer so use sparingly ensuring hanging baskets and tubs take priority. Prune summer-flowering shrubs and wisteria. Collect seeds and cuttings from your favourite plants and have a go at growing them for next year, store in the greenhouse or potting shed in fresh compost. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready so that they don’t go to seed and are wasted. Keep sowing lettuce, salad leaves and radish seeds as these will continue to grow, radishes are very satisfying as they come through very quick. Plant out summer/autumn cauliflowers early in the month for an autumn harvest. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable plot and all your pots and containers. Little and often with a small garden fork or hoe will stop them getting out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground and take up space for other plants. If you use a hoe this will cut the weeds just below the surface and you can leave out on a sunny day to dry out and die in the warmth before putting on the compost heap. Now is a great time to start planning next year’s display of bulbs for the spring time. Tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus can all be planted now to ensure a fabulous display next year. So out with the BBQ and enjoy some time in the garden with maybe a glass of wine or two relaxing in your favourite chair, after all you deserve it !!
