Happy New Year Many of us are looking forward to 2014 with more optimism than we felt this time last year. We have been through difficult economic times and it looks as though things are now on the up. Our local businesses have weathered the downturn by delivering great service and that’s what they will continue to do in 2014. Have you made lots of New Year resolutions? If one of them is to try to live more sustainably then we have some ideas for you on page 12. If you want to brighten up your January why not enjoy a cuppa (and perhaps a piece of cake?) in one of our lovely local tea shops – it needn’t mean forgetting your resolution to spend less either with vouchers from some of our favourite cafés offering amazing deals on breakfast, lunches, teas and more.

TOP 5 SOCIAL MEDIA MISTAKES Ok, who’s willing to admit that they get confused about social media sometimes? I know I do and I’ve been in this game for the last 6 years! With so many changes to social networking platforms, google analytics and mixed messages from so called “marketing gurus”, it is no wonder so many businesses just give up on social media before they even get started. Well, I am here to help! Here are the top 5 mistakes that most businesses (and people) make when it comes to social media. Granted, there are way more than 5 mistakes, but it is a good number to grasp and apply to your business.

1. Not committing to social media long term.

Too many businesses get all amped up about their shiny new Facebook page, but then 2 months later have already forgotten to update it.

2. If you build it they will come.

Blimey, this line has been so over used in the last few years, but it still sings true! So many people set up pages on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter and do not regularly change the design, or in some cases even have a design in the first place. Not building your sites correct in the first place is the same equivilant of turning up to a networking event with a paper bag over your head.

3. Too much automation

If you have your twitter linked up to your Facebook, or the other way round then I will slap your wrists as this is one of the biggest social media sins! It’s ok for a little bit of automation, but please never rely on scheduled messages 100%, that is NOT what social media is all about.

4. Post overload

On Facebook, try not to post more than 4 times a day, and the same on Linkedin. These posts should also be spread out from 7am – 9pm throughout the day. Too much content will have the opposite effect on your audience.

5. Not having a lead generation strategy

Or not having a strategy at all! Set your social media goals. Why are you actually doing this? Are you trying to drive traffic to your website? Perhaps your key objective is brand awareness or to appear as an expert in your field. Build your social media content, engagement and listening strategy around your goals.

Help through the insurance maze We are bombarded with advertising from big insurance companies wanting us to go online or contact a call centre. How much easier and pleasanter it is to talk to a local person who can guide you through the maze of finding a policy that really suits you. And when you do need to make a claim, wouldn’t you prefer someone who can pop out to see you and handle all the complicated forms and negotiate on your behalf for your benefit not the insurers?

Praised in parliament

Douglas Insurance Service, based in Cross Street, Rugby has been praised before parliament as a leading national example of best practice. The firm, which has been based in the town since 1929, was chosen from thousands of members nationwide as a leading example of how insurance brokers help customers. It was selected for the way in which it handled the challenges surrounding an arson attack at Rugby-based bicycle shop Thorntons Cycle Centre.

their contents (jewellery, works of art), security, building construction or special cover e.g. cover for youngsters at university as an extension to their policy. We can visit your home to see things in the flesh if necessary. For motor, we can offer a wide range of policies from a panel of insurers, many of whom only write business through brokers.” If things do go wrong and you need to make a claim then Douglas Insurance will help you every step of the way. “We act for you, the policyholder,” says Adrian. “Insurers may appoint a loss adjuster who, whilst independent, acts for the insurers in assessing whether cover applies, whether any warranties, conditions or exclusions apply. We will negotiate settlement of the claim for you. It’s all part of the service. We are there for our clients and we care.” You can find us at: Douglas Insurance Services, 19-20 Cross Street, Rugby CV21 3NL 01788 576877 www.douglasinsurance.co.uk

Using local knowledge and connections, Douglas Insurance was able to assist Thorntons in finding new premises and begin trading again in under two weeks. Dave Thornton, partner of Thornton Cycle Centre, said: “At every stage, Douglas Insurance Service was there to support us, progress chase and help with the claim negotiations. On the day of the fire, we were approached by a Birmingham company who wanted to charge us £10,000 to sort the claim out for us. Douglas Insurance did everything the other company had promised and more, and didn’t charge a penny; it was all part of the service.

Help with home and motor insurance

This same service is available to private individuals too. Adrian Sutton, owner of Douglas Insurance explains, “We provide face to face contact either for the homeowner that wants to talk through

Kelmarsh Hall to feature on BBC Two’s Great British Garden Revival Kelmarsh Hall will feature on a new BBC Two series seeking to reverse the decline in Britain’s horticultural history. Great British Garden Revival, which started this month, brings together the BBC’s most-loved gardening experts who are determined to turn the public back into a green-fingered nation once again. More and more front and back gardens are paved over - for development, for parking spaces, or because families don’t have the time or inclination to manage these spaces. The trend for easy-to-maintain lawns, patios and paving has also led to a decline in traditional gardens full of flowers, plants and trees to the extent that some of the country’s most iconic flora and fauna have all but disappeared. In each episode, two presenters will focus on an endangered aspect of gardens about which they feel passionately, and offer hands-on, practical advice to viewers on how they can restore and look after their gardens. Kelmarsh Hall features on the Cut Flowers episode on January 6th at 7pm, when presenter Rachel de Thame investigates the decline of Britain’s cutflower industry. On her campaign she discovers that 90% of our cut flowers are imported. Cut flowers are big business and £120 million a year is spent on wedding flowers. Rachel’s cut flower HQ is the walled garden at Kelmarsh, and throughout the

show she gives her tips on how to grow, cut and arrange flowers from the cutting garden. As part of the episode, Kelmarsh’s in-house florist, Louise Wesley, explains how she uses the cut flowers grown in the garden to produce floral displays for the Hall, a common practice when it was lived in, particularly at the start of the 20th century. Former resident and society decorator Nancy Lancaster, who lived at Kelmarsh Hall during the 1920s and then again just after World War Two, loved nothing more than filling the Hall with an abundance of freshly-cut flowers from the garden. Kelmarsh gardener Fiona Alexander said: “We are very honoured that the BBC has chosen to film at Kelmarsh. We pride ourselves on our variety of cut flowers, ranging from the cottage style delphiniums, lupins and foxgloves through to the light and feathery Ammi majus, sweet pea and phlox. They also make lovely additions to wedding bouquets for couples who get married in the Hall.” Kelmarsh Hall will next be open for a Spring Walk on Sunday 23rd February, from 11am to 3pm, when visitors can enjoy an invigorating walk and see signs of life in the gardens. The hall and gardens will then re-open to the public at Easter on Sunday 20th April. For full details of opening times visit www.kelmarsh.com or call 01604 686543.

7 ways to be greener and

1 Shop local

It’s better for everyone’s bottom line when we shop locally. There are some fantastic independent shops around from clothing to homeware, coffee shops to hardware stores. Support local businesses and get the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to your local community and economy.

2 Donate to the food bank

You’d be surprised how many people in our area are struggling to put food on the table. Redundancy, illness, domestic violence, debt or even the increased cost of heating during winter are just some of the reasons why local people go hungry. Why not donate some non-perishable food such as tinned food, tea bags, pasta or cereal to the food bank and support local people who need help. Daventry: http://www.vineyardcommunity. org.uk/foodbank.htm or call 07576 663968 Rugby: http://rugby.foodbank.org.uk/or call 07557 680019

3

Green your commute

Small changes can make a big difference. Take the bus a couple of times a week or car share with work colleagues who live near you. This will also save on fuel costs. Why not cycle to work and get some exercise at the same time? Consider putting the time you’d waste commuting to good use and work from home. With today’s wifi, virtual meeting technology and cloud storage there’s no reason why you can’t be as productive at home one day a week.

12

4 Buy local produce when you can

You don’t always spend more when you shop for local food; in some cases it can cost less because in-season foods are generally cheaper and travel costs are minimised. It also cuts down on packaging. Local farm shops and markets are a great place to buy local, seasonal produce such as meat, vegetables, breads and cheeses. Local veg box schemes are also a great way to get fresh vegetables delivered to your door.

Feature

support your local community 5 Cut down on packaging

Between a quarter and a third of all domestic waste is packaging: much of this is food packaging. It is difficult to recycle, too. Research has shown that glass is the most recyclable material (the average glass bottle contains over 25% recycled glass and can be as much as 90% recycled glass) so try to buy products in glass jars or tin cans rather than plastic where you can. A good example is to buy your milk from your local milkman. Re-use glass bottles at home and always recycle the ones you don’t need.

6

Have a go at growing your own

As well as being cheaper and organic, growing your own is also a great way of getting some exercise and fresh air and is a brilliant activity to do with the kids. They get a great sense of achievement and it means they won’t grow up to think that we grow carrots in supermarkets. You don’t need acres of space either. Grow tomatoes in hanging baskets, herbs in a window box and you only need a plastic bin and some earth to grow potatoes.

7

Volunteer in your community

Charities such as Age UK have local partners across the county that run a huge variety of projects and services, and have a constantly changing range of volunteering opportunities. Could you help as a driver? a shopper? a handyperson? an IT coach? or just visit someone who lives alone. Revive that tired drive... Weeds, moss, grime, algae, lichen... without regular attention it doesn’t take long for your home’s outside surfaces to look tired, old and in desperate need of TLC. Such unwanted growths can also cause steps, paths, patios and decking to become slippery and potentially hazardous. Yet contrary to popular belief, these growths do not damage what they’re growing on and with the right help, your home’s exterior hard surfaces will soon be looking as good as new. This is where JumboJet comes in. JumboJet is a chemical-free, professional pressure washing service that cleans, revives and tranforms paths, patios, drives, block paving, timber decking, tarmac, concrete slabs, real and reconstituted stone, garden furniture and ornaments.

Drive Cleaning... Patio Cleaning... Decking Cleaning... Amazing results from your local pressure washing specialist. Using professional equipment we deliver fantastic results making your drive, patio, decking or even garden furniture look like new.... Before

After

“ My drive is fab – the washing has made a huge difference to my garden. It makes everybody else’s drive look very shabby!”

Jane H, Rugby

For a FREE No Obligation quote call Rod on: 01788 890652 www.jumbojetwash.com

This environmentally-friendly service uses nothing but water as the cleaning medium, jetting water out at a far higher pressure than the DIY machines available to the domestic market. The result is a much deeper, better clean, which removes weeds, moss, grime, algae and lichen and breathes new life into your property’s hard surfaces. JumboJet can also protect your newly cleaned surfaces with its sanding and sealing service. Trained operatives will brush kiln-dried sand back into the paving joints before applying a clear acrylic sealant to the surface. This sealant forms a barrier, greatly reducing weed growth in the joins and minimising future maintenance. In addition, JumboJet can re-tint pattern imprinted concrete driveways, restoring them to their original colour. JumboJet staff will leave your outside areas clean and tidy, check that your drains aren’t blocked and wash down windows, doors and paintwork once the job has been done. Quotes are totally free and without obligation and a free demonstration of the effectiveness of the service can be arranged!

Surviving the big freeze The ecology team in the office were recently pondering how different animals cope in the winter and it dawned on us that fish are often an overlooked animal in this regard. Yes, they are cold blooded and, yes, their physiology allows them to survive in hostile environments, but that makes it no less interesting to peek beneath the ice to see where they are and what they are doing while encased in winter’s frozen mantle. The first thing we should notice is that the world of the fish in winter is a world that swirls in slow motion. This is because many fish literally slow down, almost to the point of hibernation, during these cold months when food is scarcest and the warmth of summer is just a fond memory. As fish are cold blooded they have no natural way of warming themselves up, as we mammals do, they have to nestle down in the warmest pockets the water has to offer. During cold periods the coolest water actually moves towards the surface near the ice and the warmer water gradually slips to the bottom. This is because when water reaches the 4oC point its structure begins to change to the solid form freezing at the surface. This phenomenon in effect insulates the warmer water below. Fish take full advantage and

GBa&e

hug the bottom to survive. As the water warms in the spring this wondrous quality of water is naturally reversed with the warmer water returning to the top. In addition some fish are apparently more equal than others in the temperature tolerance department.Trout and salmon prefer colder water and are more active in winter so their winter depth will be at a higher water level. In nature’s sometimes cruel script, some fish, especially the young ones, will not survive this trial by ice. Their physiology is as yet inadequately developed and they may be unable to handle a particularly severe season. Their diminished awareness inevitably means many will become prey for larger predatory fish. Others even become disoriented in the ice formations near river banks and shorelines and become trapped in shallow pools. And so fish are remarkable survivors and demonstrate a fascinating lifecycle. Perhaps we should all consider digging a pond in our gardens. Explore their biodiversity and understand the value of the many species and how they interact. They are so much more than a tasty accompaniment to chips.

What’s your Goal? Many of us use the New Year as a time to plan ahead and set goals or resolutions. What would you like to achieve in 2014, and how would you like your life to be different? It’s possible to set goals for most areas of life: - health, career, social life, relationships and finance for instance. Or you might look at the different roles you play, such as wife, friend, mother, employer, and use your thoughts about how you could improve your success in those roles to help determine your goals. Only you can decide what would really make a positive difference to your life, and you are most likely to succeed if you select goals that really matter to you. There is less chance of success if you are trying to achieve something because another person wants you to. Indeed some New Year’s resolutions only last a few days. To make a lasting change it’s important to make sure your goals are realistic, and to seek motivation, inspiration and support to help you stay on track. Do not set yourself too many goals or set targets way beyond your reach, as you will soon become disheartened and less likely to succeed. It’s better to set smaller goals that you can add to, or increase if things go well, and build on your positive results Some people like to write their goals down or share them with others, and this can add to the accountability that individuals feel around goal setting, thus improving their chances of success. It can also be useful to ask for support from friends, who can give you gentle reminders if you are in danger of going off

20

track. Where relevant, you may also want to get inspiration, advice and training from others such as weight loss experts, sports trainers or personal and career coaches. Other useful tools include imagery – this might be visualising yourself having achieved your goals, or sticking photographs which represent success to your fridge door or mirror. You might also find the use of quotes, role models and affirmations useful. An affirmation is a statement which says what you are aiming for in a positive way, and in the present tense. It helps to imprint positive beliefs on your subconscious. Finally, don’t forget to congratulate yourself when you do achieve success. Break your goals down into manageable steps, and celebrate by rewarding yourself at each milestone. Here are some useful Goal related quotes:

‘A goal is a dream with a deadline’ – Napoleon Hill ‘If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else’ – Yogi Berra

Look good, feel good

How to wake-up refreshed Do you spring out of bed each morning with the bright eyes and energy of a five-year-old on Christmas morning? No, me neither. But there are a few tips which might help: Get enough sleep – It’s so obvious it actually does need stating: most of us do not get anywhere near enough sleep. Sleep needs vary from person to person, but most of us need at least eight hours uninterrupted shut-eye. I haven’t slept like that since my children were born, and the oldest is now eight! Make your room dark and quiet – Too much extraneous light and noise is not conducive to good sleep. Invest in thick curtains or a sleep mask if light is an issue and soft earplugs if your neighbour has noisy dogs or a twitchy car alarm. Renew your mattress – Mattresses do not last forever. They become saggy and less supportive with age, which makes us fidget and interferes with the quality of our sleep. A good mattress should support your spine and allow your body to relax totally. Have a bath – Yes really. A soak before bed will relax your muscles and calm your mind. Lavender bath products are especially good at inducing sleep. Clear your head – It’s difficult to sleep if your head is still whirring from the events of the day. Concentrate on your breathing and allow thoughts to float away. Anything you are dealing with will still be there tomorrow and you’ll cope better if you’ve had a good night’s sleep.

Altogether individual financial advice You may recognise Simon Hodson; having lived in Daventry for over 20 years, he has been a familiar face in the local banks as a branch-based adviser. Yet the financial services arena is changing and in order to continue meeting his customers’ needs, Simon decided it was time to set up his own business. “The banks are pulling away from the advice market, yet with an uncertain economy and an even longer wait for your state pension, people need tailored financial advice now more than ever.” Simon works in partnership with Positive Solutions, one of the UK’s largest providers of independent financial advice. As an Independent Financial Adviser, Simon offers unbiased, experienced advice, with access to thousands of products and providers, meaning a bespoke service based around your individual requirements. Using an IFA is not purely reserved for the wealthy; from the moment you buy your first home, progress your career or start a family, you have assets that need to be protected. Simon can help you secure

your long-term future by providing mortgage solutions, family and business protection, savings and investments. “Working with Positive Solutions gives me more time with clients to determine the best protection for your personal and financial circumstances,” Simon explains. “Having the support of a national network means that my clients benefit from in-depth knowledge of all areas of advice, with me as your first point of contact at all times. “My service is built around your needs and as such, appointments can be arranged at your home or place of work at a time to suit you.” Simon can be contacted on 07847 806 641. Make a resolution to visit your local tea shop! Typically, January is the month when we all try to reign in those indulgences. Aren’t you sick of writing off an entire month as thirty-one days of treat-free, alcoholfree scrimping and saving? Yes, perhaps you have a few festive pounds to lose so a couple of visits to the gym wouldn’t go amiss. But it doesn’t mean that you have to deny yourself the treat of getting out and about, meeting up with friends and partaking in delicious homecooked fayre! Once reserved for blue rinses and Miss Marple enthusiasts, the local tea shop has suddenly become the ‘place to be’. Programmes such as the Great British Bake Off and Kirstie’s Handmade Home have made vintage and chintz fashionable again and instead of heading to the nearest faceless coffee shop or pub, people of all ages are opting for independent tea shops, little cafés and farm shops. And why not? Good tea shops become the heart of the community; a meeting place for friends and family; somewhere that people can get together with their children without worrying about encountering slightly inebriated patrons. A relaxed, welcoming setting where you can sit with a specialist tea and a warm scone. Plus, if you are thinking about your waistline, many tea shops offer healthy salads and sandwiches, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options. And a lot of those herbal teas are very good for you.

Now that’s a New Year I like the sound of! So don’t write the first month of 2014 off before it starts... seek out your nearest tea shop and don’t forget to take the voucher!

Make a day of it in Historic Braunston, Northamptonshire

Timeline_Postcard_DL.indd 1

With the unveiling of the Braunston Timeline in All Saints Church on 7th December, attention has been drawn to the amazing history and landmarks of this vibrant village in rural Northamptonshire.

Set in the heart of rural England

Braunston lies at the junction of the Grand Union Canal and the Oxford Canal in a truly rural setting on the border of Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. The village, on the hill above the canal, thrived for over 150 years on the canal trade - carrying goods from the Midlands to London. Now it is a centre for leisure activities and boasts by far and away the busiest stretch of canal anywhere in the country. The biggest single canal enterprise is the Marina (on the A45); in addition there is a score of smaller businesses providing all the needs of the modern boater. On the towpath near the Marina is “The Stop House” where, in the old days, tolls were collected from the passing boats. The village itself is on a ridge above the canal where All Saints’ Church dominates the countryside for miles around. Built in 1849, it is the third church on the site and the Norman font still survives from the first; there is much of interest to see in the church which is proud of itself in the community. In 1895 the railways came to Braunston, remains of the bridge can still be seen on the A45 and if you take

25/11/2013 19:5

advantage of one of the many walks through Braunston you can pass along the track to St Peters Church in Wolfhampcote (one of the oldest churches in England) where you can see the old arches of the railway and just make out the original curves of the Oxford Canal ( if you look closely!!).

The most recent addition to its history spanning 2,000 years The Braunston timeline has taken over two years to complete and will be on permanent display in the church. It is in full colour and measures five metres long and one metre high and has been professionally designed and produced by local businesses. It provides a superb back drop for families to visit, school trips studying history and ramblers passing through this village of significant interest. It depicts its history to include murder, scandal and the last inhabitants of the abandoned village of Braunstonbury.

Why not make a day of it in Braunston

Dig out the old explorer 222 map or visit www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/explorer-maprugby-daventry.html and tailor make some routes in and around the area. Suggested starting points with parking for walkers is The Admiral Nelson pub in Little Braunston alongside the canal or The Old Plough, ( originally built in 1672 ) in High Street. Both do great food during your visit to Braunston.

Get switched on!

There are three main types of low-energy bulbs available – compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), halogens and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). CFLs use only a fifth of the electricity that an old incandescent bulb would, because they don’t generate as much heat. This also means that they are kinder to your light fittings. Replacing one bulb in your house can save you £7 a year, so the savings can really add up! They also last a lot longer. One disadvantage of CFLs is that they can take a little while to reach their full brightness, unlike halogens and LEDs which come on straight away. Some CFLs don’t work well at low temperatures, so are not suitable for unheated rooms or garages. LED bulbs are even more efficient than CFLs and can save you nearly £7.50 per bulb per year. They usually cost more to buy, but can last up to 30 years! Halogen bulbs use a similar amount of energy as incandescent bulbs, and so are more expensive to run than CFLs and LEDs. They also have a much shorter lifespan. LEDs and halogen bulbs can be disposed of with your normal waste, but you will need to take CFLs to a recycling point or tip as they contain a small amount of mercury. A wide range of bulb fittings is now available – particularly in CFLs – and you should be able to find one to fit all your existing lighting, including ceiling

56

To choose the correct wattage, you simply need to divide by five – so if a lamp used to take an old 60W bulb, you will now need a bulb of around 12W. You will also need to consider the lumen (lm) value to find out how bright the bulb is. The brightness of an old 60W bulb is roughly equivalent to 700–900lm and a 100W bulb equates to 1300lm. Finally, look at the colour temperature of the bulb to decide on the type of light you require. This is measured in Kelvin (K). A low value (2700K) means the light is warmer (often labelled as ‘warm white’), whereas a higher value (3500K+) will give you a colder white effect.

Traditional light bulbs have now been phased out across Europe, and we are gradually getting used to the low-energy alternatives. But with a whole new set of names, numbers and jargon to get used to, it can be difficult to know if you’re buying the right thing.

spotlights and chandelier fittings. Most can also be used with dimmer switches. Remember to check that the shape and size of the new bulb is suitable.

Recipe

Duo of Rabbit

Rabbit loin wellington, braised leg and pomme puree My favourite way to serve this is with poached young leeks, chantry carrots, roasted baby shallots and toasted caraway seeds.

over the top. Chill again to let the pastry cool. 5 minutes should do. Egg wash and season before baking at 200c for 15 to 20 minutes, rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Ask the butcher to break down your rabbit for you. This wellington recipe serves 2 people

To braise the leg

Shopping List

Get a thick bottom pan hot, season the legs and sear them all over.

Method

Place the legs into a sauce pan with a large glass of white wine and whatever stock veg you have lying around... leeks, onions herbs etc the more the better! Put 5 bay leaves, 15 peppercorns, 4 juniper berries and a bulb of garlic in it,also top up with chicken stock until everything is covered. Bring to the boil, when it comes to the boil skim off the scum that appears and turn it down to a gentle simmer, simmer until nice and tender about 1 and a bit hours.

In the same pan add a knob of butter and the spinach and cook until wilted, season. If you have some grate some fresh nutmeg into it. Allow to cool.

Take the legs and vegetables out turn up the heat and reduce by half – refresh with garlic and thyme ( throw in a bunch of garlic and thyme ) this freshens the sauce up so you get depth of flavour from stewing the vegetables then the beautiful fresh flavour from refreshing it, thicken with a beurre manie or corn flour.

4 loins of rabbit 800g flat or field mushrooms 4 slices Parma ham 2 sheets of readymade puff pastry 2 egg yolks 2 handfuls of spinach per wellington Store cupboard ingredients Pre heat the oven to 200c Heat some oil in a large pan and quickly seal the loins all over – allow to cool.

To make the duxelle, roughly chop the mushrooms and blend in a food processor to form a rough puree. Transfer the mixture into a hot, dry pan and add a splash of white wine, knob of butter and season. Allow everything to evaporate stirring occasionally. Set aside and cool. Roll out a generous length of cling film, lay out two slices of parma ham slightly overlapping. With a pallet knife spread the mushroom mixture evenly over the ham about 1/2cm thick. Scatter the spinach on top of the mushroom duxelle. Place two loins next to each other on the parma ham and keeping a tight hold of the cling film from the outside edge, neatly roll the parma ham and mushroom over the rabbit into a tight barrel shape. Twist the ends to secure the cling film. Refrigerate for 10 to 15 minutes, this will allow the wellington to set and helps keep the shape. Roll out the pastry quite thinly and cut to a size that will cover your rabbit. Unwrap the meat from the cling film. Egg wash the edge of the pastry and place the prepared rabbit in the middle. Roll up the pastry, cut any excess off the ends and fold neatly to the “underside “. Turnover and egg wash

For the pomme puree

1kg potatoes – such as desiree or maris piper 140g butter – cut into cubes 300ml hot full fat milk 6 tbsp double cream truffle oil to taste salt and pepper Peel the potatoes and cut into even size dice so that they all cook at the same time – about 12 – 15 minute in boiling salted water. Drain well, then return to the pan and cook for 1 – 2 minutes over a dry heat. Mash the potatoes very thoroughly or press them through a potato ricer or mouli back into the pan – they should be completely lump free. Don’t be tempted to use a food processor as this will make the potatoes gluey. Gradually beat 140g of butter into the potato until it starts to look shiny. Heat the milk in a small pan and the cream at boiling point then slowly add the milk and cream to the puree with some salt and fresh ground pepper. The potato should become a soft velvety puree. You may not need all of the creamy milk. Add the truffle oil and more seasoning if required. Keep warm until required.

Sustainable and with real long term cost benefits... Have you considered investing in renewable energy? Many of us will either have, or know someone with a multi-fuel stove, underfloor heating or solar panels... but what about wind turbines, rainwater harvesting and heat pumps? Energy efficient, environmentally friendly technology is not purely reserved for the wealthy and ‘Grand Designs’ aficionados; there are many affordable, practical ways to become more sustainable, lower your carbon emissions and reduce your utility bills long term. Renewable energy technology benefits the environment by providing sustainable, recycled alternatives to gas, electricity and water, all of which are getting increasingly expensive each year. But even better, many of these products can increase the look and value of your property. Take, for example, a multifuel stove. Oozing character and elegant design, a stove brings warmth and style to your home. They are also three times more efficient than an open fire and can use wood from sustainable sources, coal, smokeless fuel, peat and turf.

Save on water consumption Then, of course, there’s rainwater harvesting. On average, a person will use 150 litres of water per day, but only 50% of this needs to be ‘mains water quality’. By installing a rainwater harvesting system, you can actually halve your water bill!

62

And you don’t have to travel to a major city to find this kind of technology; it is literally on your doorstep! Located on High March Industrial Estate in Daventry, TBS Eco Centre supplies a wide range of high quality, energy efficient, environmentally friendly products to commercial and domestic customers in the area. As part of TBS, the company has been selling high efficiency boilers for more than twenty years and four years ago, began focusing on what they believe is the future – renewable energy.

Great local advice The team will provide information and advice to help you decide what is the most suitable product for your individual circumstances. They can recommend installers with the appropriate accreditations, such as Hetas and MCS. Trade accounts are also available. TBS Eco Centre is proud to practise what it preaches; as a zero carbon depot, almost every product in the showroom is in full working order, powering the depot and showcasing the benefits of renewable energy technology. So why not take a look at the possibilities for yourself? TBS Eco Centre, Hackwood Road, High March Industrial Estate, Daventry, NN11 4ES Tel: 01327 708 508

Happy New Year from The Armchair Gardener “Happy New Year darling. I wonder what joys 2014 will bring, last year was so busy with the open gardens and the village produce show, I couldn’t have done it without my beautiful wife”. “Oh dear how many sherries have you had ? I do worry when you start gibbering!” “Fetch me a top up please my angel whilst I reflect on what lies ahead for the New Year”. “ Diet club for you! ” comes a distant voice heading off to the wine cellar! She’s right though, I have gained a few pounds over the festive season, perhaps tomorrow will be a good day to start the task of digging over the vegetable plot ready for the frost to break up the soil, I still have plenty of veg in situ, brassicas, onion and garlic sets and winter broad beans which can be a bit hit and miss to tell the truth, but I always like a challenge!

gym. You can burn about 200 calories an hour by digging, raking and even weeding. Muscles are constantly being used pushing wheelbarrows, emptying containers and bending down, but you must remember to do some warm up exercises to prevent that pulled muscle or nagging back ache. I do love the calm of the winter in the garden, all of the cutting back has been done, leaves are piled up waiting for worms to chomp their way through and make beautiful compost and if you look closely there are tiny shoots of the first snowdrops poking their heads above ground. “ Here you are dear, Champagne to finish off the evening and a big thank you for all the cleaning and polishing you did before Christmas.” Things are looking up, “ any mince pies left my love?” “Don’t push your luck” comes the reply !

Gardening is great exercise, a super alternative to the
