We’ve all become more aware of where our food comes from recently. Our local pubs and cafes are planning special menus for Mothers Day and Easter, often using locally sourced ingredients and lots of home- made produce. We have some hints and tips on eating seasonal produce and even some ideas on planting your own. Try out the seasonal food recipe supplied by The Countryman, Staverton. Are the longer days making you think about spring cleaning or even home improvements? What about the garden that’s been forgotten for the last few weeks? Marie Curie need you! We need to raise £13,000 every hour of every day to carry on our work Marie Curie Nurses work day and night looking after patients who want to be cared for at home at the end of their lives. Marie Curie Cancer Care is dedicated to the care of people with terminal cancer and other illnesses. Through our network of 2,000 Marie Curie nurses, we care for more than 31,000 patients each year but we need to raise over £13,000 every hour of every day to fund our work. Our symbol is the Daffodil, the international symbol of hope. As a spring flower the Daffodil symbolizes emergence from the dark and difficult days of winter

and gives hope for the future. Most people know us for the Daffodil and one of the ways, among many, that people support our work is through the Great Daffodil Appeal, which runs throughout March each year. It is pretty ‘Great’ actually: around 4 million daffodils are handed out each year and over 25,000 volunteers help run Daffodil collections for us raising over £5 million! There are lots of collections organised throughout Northamptonshire during the month of March and it may not be too late to volunteer an hour or two of your time to help at one of these, please call: 01604 442315 (Mon-Fri 9-5). Alternatively, you can donate to the appeal yourself or request a box of daffodils to place in your office or local shop by visiting: www.mariecurie.org.uk and following links to the “Donate an hour” pages where you will find all the information you need. It costs around £180 to provide a full shift for a nurse to care for a terminally ill patient in their home. Supporting Marie Curie’s Daffodil Appeal means you are helping us fund the equivalent of over £1/4 million hours of Marie Curie nursing time each year.

NEWNHAM

When the tower which has a recessed spire on top was considered in need of stregthening the Victorians installed some large cast iron tie rods and anchor plates.

The church of St Michael and All Angels was formerly a chapel of the parent church at Badby both of which were owned by the Abbey of Evesham until the Reformation.

The church still has some box pews in the aisles which were once leased to principal village householders. Also look out for the 15th century brass of Letitia Catesby which for safety is placed above the 18th century pulpit. That of her husband who died in 1467 disappeared in the 17th century.

Two miles south of Daventry

It has a 15th century tower porch open on three sides which is unique in Northamptonshire and very unusual elsewhere. The tower houses six bells and it must have been a cold place for the bell ringers in the days when they stood in the open porch to ring them.

Eat seasonally What to eat now – The Village Emporium style! Spring is finally on its way with bulbs poking their heads above ground and the birds singing.

Seasonal

So we can leave the comfort foods behind and begin to look forward to crunchy, fresh salads.

Why eat seasonally?

new potatoes

There are a number of good reasons to eat more local, seasonal food: • reduce the energy needed to grow and transport the food we eat • avoid paying a premium for food that is scarcer or has travelled a long way • reconnect with nature’s cycles and the passing of time • seasonal food is fresher and so tends to be tastier and more nutritious • supports your local farmers markets, farm shop, and local butcher for purchases and local cafes, pubs and tea shops who are working to the same goals as us.... Love your local.

Grow your own seasonally

There is nothing more satisfying than nurturing a tiny seed into a full grown vegetable or salad to put on your plate!! Even if you don’t have a garden or allotment, try a few pots on a patio or balcony, or even herbs on the windowsill. And you can look forward to saving money later in the season. Here’s a few ideas on what to plant now March sow the following in well prepared seed beds: beetroot, broad beans, leeks ,lettuce, radishes and parsnips. April sow: peas, broccoli, cabbage, brussels, spinach, rocket And plant out onion and shallot sets and asparagus.

Recipe provided by Darren Hill @ The Countryman, Staverton www.thecountrymanstaverton.co.uk floured surface and kneed gently until smooth. Roll out into a small circle and chill for 30 minutes. Roll chilled pastry out into a large circle approximately 2mm thick and line an 8 inch tart ring. Line pastry case with foil and fill with baking beans. Bake on middle shelf for 20 minutes at 160˚C until cooked and golden. Remove foil and beans. Trim edges of pastry to tart tin.

Rhubarb & Custard Tart

Shopping List Pastry Filling 80g Butter 200g Fresh Rhubarb 60g Caster Sugar 1/2pt Double Cream 1 Large beaten Egg 4 Egg Yolks 165g Plain Flour 100g Sugar Pinch of Salt 1 Vanilla Pod - split & deseeded Wash & trim rhubarb, cut into 2cm lengths. Blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes and then cool under running cold tap and drain. Tip - to keep your rhubarb pink, add a dash of grenadine to the water. Pastry Beat butter & sugar until smooth and creamy. With mixer on slow, incorporate beaten egg. Then add flour in 3 or 4 stages, still with the mixer on slow. When mixture comes together as crumbly dough stop the machine. Gather dough together, turn out onto

Filling Fill pastry case with rhubarb pieces, all standing on end like pillars. To make the custard, warm cream with the vanilla pod and seeds. Meanwhile cream egg yolks and sugar together. Pour warmed cream over egg mixture, whisking all the time. Pour custard through sieve to remove any cooked pieces of egg and the vanilla pod. Then pour the custard into the tart up to the level of the rhubarb. Bake in the middle of the oven at 120˚C until custard mix reaches 70˚C, this will take approximately 20-30 minutes depending on your oven. Check with a temperature probe. If you do not have a probe, the custard needs to wobble but not be runny in the centre. Cool and serve with fresh berries and lemon mascarpone. Delicious.

Bon appétit! Suggestion:

to keep your rhubarb pink, add a dash of grenadine to the water.

Competition

Football for charity Football for community Football for causes When Terry O’Neill organised his first charity football match in 2008, he couldn’t have dreamed that four years later he would be working full time, meeting footballing legends and aiming to raise more than £100,000 in 2013. So far, Football for Charity (Football FC) has raised more than £90,000 and helped 24 national and local charities and causes. From supporting Daventry Mind and the Naomi Tate Memorial Fund to assisting local families finding it difficult to pay hospital fees or travelling to and from hospital, Terry and his team of family, friends and volunteers are dedicated to raising money through the power of sport. Events have drawn people to Daventry from miles around, with various charity ‘Legends’ matches against famous Liverpool, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ireland footballers from years gone by. This year, Tottenham Legends XI will be coming to Northampton on Sunday May 12th in a game that will herald the beginning of a relationship between Football FC and Northampton Town FC. April 12th will see Daventry Town FC hosting the M1 Soap Star Charity Match, stars from music and television, including Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Waterloo Road and The Risk. Other events include race nights and golfing challenges, plus ongoing memorabilia auctions on the website.

Get involved! There are lots of ways to support Football for Charity. Volunteer stewards and parking attendants are always needed for charity matches, and of course, coming along to a fundraising event will not

only help raise money but also add to the already fantastic atmosphere the Legends matches are renowned for. Sponsorship is also vital to the success of Football FC’s events, ranging from sponsoring the match itself to the local players’ shirts, plus advertising in the matchday programme. Rosanna Price

acupuncture & more...

With more than 20 years’ experience, Tree of Life Therapy’s Rosanna Price is one of Northamptonshire’s most experienced therapists. She has a reputation for excellent professional skills, combined with kindness. The Village Emporium decided to find out a little more about Rosanna and the work she does... What is Zero Balancing?

“Zero Balancing is a hands-on therapy that doesn’t require the client to undress. Because it’s non-invasive, comfortable and supportive, Zero Balancing works well with people dealing with longterm physical or emotional trauma, as well as life challenges like redundancy or divorce. It enables you to feel more connected to who you are at your core, which in turn, helps you navigate through life in a healthier, more positive manner.”

What sort of clients do you tend to attract? “I have all kinds of people who ask for my help, but I would say that the majority of them want to be treated as a human being rather than as a symptom walking through the door. The idea of therapy can be quite daunting, so I ensure that my clients are given kindness, support, understanding and most of all, time. It is so important to take a person’s needs, worries and condition seriously and treat them as a whole. Sometimes, just to have someone who understands and is ready to listen can make a huge difference to a person’s wellbeing.”

Acupuncture & Zero Balancing

over 20 years experience a kind, understanding & skilled therapist l physical, mental & emotional problems addressed l

What would you say to people put off Acupuncture because of the needles? “Before I had acupuncture, I used to be terrified of them myself! The needles are incredibly thin, and any sensation only lasts a few seconds. In 23 years I’ve only had two people decide they couldn’t deal with needles, and the benefits you’ll feel are worth any trepidation you may have.”

A nanny offers ultimate flexibility in childcare and may be more affordable than you think.

Have you considered a nanny? Your Nanna Nanny will be a childcare professional with recognised qualifications or at least 2 years full-time experience. Every nanny has been personally interviewed, at least 2 references checked, DBS (CRB) checked and holds a current paediatric first aid certificate. • Hiring a nanny can be more affordable than using a nursery, especially for more than one child.

• Your child benefits from continuity of care by a caring professional in your own home. • You decide the hours you need. • You have a say over your child’s routine. • Your Nanna nanny is able to look after your children even if they are unwell. • Tax savings could be available through the childcare voucher scheme.

For more information, fill in the online form at www.nanna.uk.com or call Nicolette on 07811251440. Nanna can supply temporary cover.

Protect your pet Use National Pet Month as a reminder to make sure your animals are properly vaccinated This year’s National Pet Month runs from 1 April to 6 May. The campaign aims to tell people about the benefits of having a pet and create awareness of how we should care for them. It also highlights the role and value of working companion animals, such as guide dogs. There will be pet-themed events all over the country during the month, including open days, fundraising events, shows and fun competitions. Last year’s campaign raised around £12,000 for local charities. You can find out what’s happening near you at www. nationalpetmonth.org.uk. A free pack for event organisers and lots of useful tips are also available from the website. Of course, one of the main ways we can keep our furry friends healthy and happy is by getting them regularly vaccinated against infectious diseases. For the first few weeks of their lives, puppies and kittens will be protected from infections by their mother’s milk, as long as she has been regularly vaccinated. However, after this time they will need regular vaccinations. Puppies are normally vaccinated at eight and 10 weeks, and kittens at nine and 12 weeks, with an initial course of two injections. They will then need to be given a booster 12 months after their first vaccination, and regularly throughout their lives.

38

Older pets may need additional vaccinations as their immunity can decline. Here are the main diseases that pets are routinely vaccinated against: Dogs – canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, leptospirosis and infectious canine hepatitis. Dogs may need a kennel cough vaccine if they will be spending some time in kennels. This protects against parainfluenza virus and bordetella bronchiseptica. If you are taking your dog abroad, they may also need to be vaccinated against rabies. Cats – feline infectious enteritis, feline herpes virus, feline calicivirus and feline leukaemia virus (if they are at risk). Rabbits – myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). Many of these diseases are now thankfully very rare, but if an animal does catch one, they can be difficult and expensive to cure, or even fatal. Some can also be transmitted to humans. Your vet will give you a card to record when vaccinations are given. They should also remind you when boosters are due. Going to the vet on a regular basis, also means that they can keep an eye on your pet’s general health and spot any potential problems early on. Remember – prevention is better than cure!

Lording it over the manor The Middle Ages were dark times. The Lords lived like lords. The peasants were - well peasants. Then along came the industrial revolution and everything changed. The feudal and agricultural society turned into our modern, celebrity obsessed, town and city-oriented culture. And life moved on. At least, that is what many people commonly think. Fortunately, those of us who live in the parts of the country served by the Village Emporium know better. The heart of the feudal system was the Manor and Manor House - many of which still stand and remain, or are commemorated in the names of our pretty villages and modern housing estates. What we often forget is that the Manor was often the first layer of law in the country, with around 20,000 recorded in the Domesday Book. Most manors dealt with purely civil matters - tenancy agreements, contract disputes and so on. But the more important manors had no Sheriff, and so had criminal responsibilities. This meant they could try by jury, and punish, all crimes committed within the jurisdiction. This could include capital punishment the “RIGHT OF GALLOWS”. The local Lord presided over these courts as judge - and not (as commonly thought) judge AND jury. The jury was made up of freehold tenants within the boundary of the manor. But the Lord could set any punishment, so if he (or she) disagreed with a guilty verdict the punishment could be set very low. Or, of course, very high if he really disliked the culprit.

The operation of these courts required certain numbers of freehold tenants to be present, so most manorial courts have died out, but 40 still exist today, including in Warwick, Alcester, and Henleyin-Arden. They are still very much a part of the modern landscape. Although the manorial courts, often the manorial lands - and even sometimes the original manor houses - no longer exist, the people who were Lords of the Manor are still very real. They may no longer have the right to hang residents. They may no longer have the right to mine for tin or other useful stone or metals under your garden. They may no longer have the right to control local common land. But they are still able to be called the LORD OF THE MANOR and are often local people with a deep commitment to the welfare of the community and are involved in a lot of charitable ‘good works’. A local company, The Liberty Hundred, is ensuring that these ancient Lordship Titles are not forgotten. Where they have been lost to history, they are reviving their use, and they are encouraging current Lords of the Manor to remember their central role in making good things happen in the places where they live. The Liberty Hundred can be found on the web at http://www.liberty100.co.uk if you want to find out more. Go on - you know you want to …...

What will surprise most readers is that these courts haven’t disappeared completely! In fact their criminal jurisdiction was only abolished as recently as 1977! The one exception is the court for the Manor of Laxton in Nottinghamshire, which still has responsibility for criminal activities relating to the open field system of farming which they still use.

Spring cleaning The chimney, the drive, the oven: We couldn’t do without them, but many of us do try and get away without cleaning them! So why not call in a professional and save yourself some blood, sweat and tears! A chimney that serves an open fire should be swept annually to keep the fire burning efficiently and safely, and for around £40 it can be done quickly and competently by a trained professional. During a sweep, which takes around 45 minutes, brushes inserted into the flue dislodge soot deposits which are removed by vacuuming. Most chimney sweeps will also inspect your chimney from the roof for potential problems. Soot deposits can build up and obstruct the chimney, making the fireplace inefficient and potentially unsafe. Flammable creosote, found in soot, can also ignite and cause the chimney to catch fire. Members of The National Association of Chimney Sweeps are fully qualified and experienced, have full public liability insurance and issue certificates on completion of their work. The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps trains, assesses and monitors its members to ensure that customers receive the best service. Cleaning your own oven is hard work, time consuming and dirty, but if you choose a professional instead, you’ll get a trained individual who can generally do a much better job in a fraction of the time!

A typical clean takes 1 to 1.5 hours which will include the racks, shelves and pans as well as the interior and outside of the oven. It costs around £50, but do check exactly what is included in the price as many companies charge extra for items like grill pans. Members of The Association of Approved Oven Cleaners have completed training in Health and Safety and employment law, and do not use caustic or toxic products within your home. Weeds, moss and dirt are all too common additions to driveways and patios once they have been laid for a while. DIY jet washing can remove them but it is a messy, dirty job and can leave behind zebra striping and unsightly lines. A professional drive cleaning company will eliminate that problem by blasting the surface with high pressure water from rotary head cleaning equipment. The process removes weeds, surface grime, moss and algae and restores colour to once dull slabs and tiles. The job is finished by re-sanding the joints and a sealant can also be applied which will protect the surface and discourage weeds from re-growing. Cost depends on size and it is always a good idea to get more than one quote and to ask for references if available.

So, spring into action and get those problem areas spruced up and gleaming!

A roof over your head With many years experience Billy Christopher knows a lot about roofing and in particular Single Ply flat roofing as he has specialised in this area of roofing for the past 12 years. Single Ply roofing has been around for the past 40 years and is a great product for the domestic market. Many commercial buildings like Tesco and Asda supermarkets and other large modern buildings have single ply roofing and the finish on them can be made to look stunning compared with traditional felt.

has had to be replaced as yet ( a felt roof typically has a life span of 8 to 10 years ), its low maintenance and can be installed with specialist insulation board saving on heating costs. Roof lights can be installed to add extra light to a home or new extension and many people have opted to replace their conservatory glass roof with Single Ply System to both stabilise temperature and make the room a more usable part of the home. As you can see the benefits are many when comparing to traditional felt roofs. Billy is fully approved for fitting these membranes and offers a free quotation service giving you complete piece of mind he is the right man for the job. References from past customers are available. Contact Billy on 07867 784902 or 01788 570591.

Before With his vast knowledge and experience Billy is able to advise both commercial and domestic customers on their best way forward with their particular roof, whether it be a porch, balcony, garage, conservatory or extension. With all his customers delighted with both his work ethics, pricing and end result it is little wonder that they are first to recommend him to family and friends.

After

Single Ply membranes are essentially a sheet of specialist plastic which can be used to cover flat, pitched, curved and vertical roof surfaces. The benefits of this membrane are huge in comparison to felt; its looks far superior than felt with its smooth clean finish (normally in anthracite colour so fitting in with all house finishes) it lasts over 40 years - this is confirmed as its only been around for 40 years and none of it

Quick Drying

Radiating warmth

Before Daventry and surrounding villages

If your radiators feel cold at the top and warm at the bottom, it is likely that air trapped inside them – a common problem that can be fixed quite easily by bleeding them. First, determine which radiators are affected. Switch your central heating on, and then check that each radiator is heated uniformly. Any with cold spots will need bleeding. Before bleeding, turn off the central heating to prevent more air entering the system. Bleed the radiator by inserting a bleed key (supplied with your radiator and available at DIY stores) in the bleed valve at the top of the radiator, whilst holding a cloth or small bowl underneath to catch any leaking water. With your hand wrapped in a cloth for protection, slowly turn the key anticlockwise until a hissing sound occurs. This is the trapped air escaping. Once the hissing stops and water starts to drip out (usually after a few seconds), close the valve back up. Repeat this process for all affected radiators. Turn the central heating back on once finished, and check your radiators after a couple of hours to ensure they have a uniform temperature, and that no water is leaking from the bleed valve. Do this once a year to keep your central heating in tip-top condition.

Your garden

The armchair gardener SPRING SOWING “So glad you gave up with the gym love, your resolutions never last!” “Well, with this new allotment of ours, I simply haven’t got time for exercise any longer.” I reply reluctantly from the hall, whilst bent double wrestling with my clay soiled boots. In 1887 the allotment act obliged local authorities to provide allotments where there is sufficient demand for growing space and luckily for me the allotments were sighted within convenient distance of the pub, and of course, home. I am further consoled in the knowledge that with food demand set to double over the next 50 years, I am not only making a contribution to quell world food poverty but also save a few pounds on the weekly shopping bill. All those unnecessary trips to the supermarket for half a pound of carrots won’t be needed if we ever start reaping the benefits. I gently unlatch the allotment gate without disturbing any of the seasoned allotmenteers toiling with their soil. One wrong slip of the hoe could mean curtains for half a dozen broad bean shoots at this time of year. There it is, our patch, apparently untouched for the last fifteen years and still looking relatively similar, more akin with a tree nursery.

60

All the careless offers of help have long since dispersed to other plots, but advice is cheap here and comes in a plentiful supply. For the princely sum of £22 a year, we have acquired 10 rods. Plots are traditionally measured in rods, an old Anglo Saxon unit! So called because it was the length of the rod used to control a team of oxen, which is 5.5 yards (5.03) metres. So far, the third I prepared over the winter has plenty of organic matter incorporated within it, and I left the soil weeded and turned over in big lumps for those frosts and bad weather we had at the beginning of the year to break it up into a fine tilth. It really helps with raking out when preparing a seed bed for spring sowing come March and April. Today I’m sowing parsnips, I only wish the seed company would half the price of seed for a reduced quantity, there’s enough in this packet for half the Midlands. You need to keep the faith with parsnips, they are slow to germinate but well worth the effort, especially when you are still eating them well into winter. That’s enough for now, I’m all in, time for a pint. Will Hewitt, Landscape Architect Designer whewitt15@yahoo.co.uk 07934 440949

Recruitment that puts people first “We are passionate about finding the right person for the right job”, says Joanne Clarke. It was this passion that led Jo to team up with Wayne Morris to form Morris Clarke Recruitment just 13 months ago. And Jo and Wayne’s down to earth, honest approach has meant business has rocketed. Jo and Wayne are highly experienced recruitment professionals who became disillusioned with the impersonal, target driven approach of many large agencies. “We felt there was a different way”, explains Jo. “We take time to understand our clients and their business. We want to find the RIGHT person for each vacancy, not just any person because we want that client to come back to us time and again. We will only promise what we know we can deliver.” And it’s obvious that this approach works as they both have several clients who have been with them for over 10 years.

Getting to know candidates Wayne and Jo take the same care with candidates too. “We understand that finding a job is a big thing so we get to know our candidates, usually through meeting them in person or if that’s not possible then we will talk at length over the phone,” says Wayne. “We are available out of hours, even at weekends and we’ll happily come out to meet candidates. And if we can’t help we will say so, perhaps recommending other options such as further training.” Morris Clarke has just moved to new offices at Broad March in Daventry. It means they can offer training facilities or interview rooms if clients want to go off-site. So why not give Jo or Wayne a ring and pop in for a coffee. Business & IT

A FEW YEARS AGO... A few years ago, using the Internet to market a small business meant to create a presence online with a simple, informational website. Then came the demands of search engine optimisation to ensure Google and Yahoo searches yielded top-ranked results for your company. Was your business’s website full of the key search terms that would bring it to the attention of customers? Today, social media is transforming the small-business marketing landscape. Social media are Web- or mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information. Businesses can tap into powerful networking sites and other social media to drive customers to their shops or companies. But before any business dives into the world of social media, I urge you to think about these top social media facts to ensure a successful campaign:1. Social media is not about posting what you had for breakfast. 2. Social media is not your super hero. If your marketing is weak, your customer service is sloppy, then social media will have the opposite effect. 3. Social media does NOT replace traditional marketing methods. It’s still important to produce leaflets, advertise in magazines, email marketing, press releases etc. 4. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start with one platform and build from there. 5. Consider how much time it will take to implement an effective social media strategy (min of 1hr a day) 6. If you have staff, then ensure you get staff buy in!
