After the miserable, wet winter it’s good to have some summer fun to look forward to. One of the most exciting new local events is Towcester Food Festival on 7-8 June. It’s a celebration of locallyproduced, artisan food and drink. The Village Emporium is delighted to have been selected as the media partner and we are producing a guide to complement the festival. We can offer a limited number of advertising opportunities for businesses who want to reach food lovers in Northamptonshire and beyond. Just call us to find out more. In the meantime we have Mother’s Day and Easter to look forward to. We hope you enjoy reading The Village Emporium this spring.

g? Eg e th or er st Ea – st ir f e m ca t ha W Painting eggshells is an ancient practice, which pre-dates Christianity by thousands of years. Yet the tradition of giving decorated eggs as gifts are as almost as intertwined with Easter as the crucifixion itself. Why have eggs become so synonymous with Easter? Easter falls in the spring, the season of renewal and regrowth. And just like the Easter bunny and baby chicks, the egg is a pagan symbol of fertility, new life and rebirth. Even custom of roast lamb on Easter Sunday alludes to the the lamb’s traditional role as a religious sacrifice. Why exactly we started to decorate or dye eggs is not certain, but there is proof that eggs were dyed for spring festivals in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and Persia. It is generally accepted that the early Christians of Mesopotamia were the first to link eggs to Christ’s death and rebirth; they began to stain eggs red to signify the blood shed by Christ at his crucifixion. In the centuries to come, the Christian Church officially adopted the custom, regarding Easter Eggs as a symbol of Christ’s resurrection.

with chocolates and gifts. And of course, the 19th Century saw the world-famous, priceless jewelled Fabergé eggs. France and Germany began making solid chocolate eggs in the 19th Century. However, it was not until the invention of a press separated cocoa butter from the bean, plus the introduction of a pure cocoa by Cadbury Brothers in 1866, that chocolate could flow into moulds to create hollow eggs and the ‘modern’ Easter Egg was manufactured.

When did eggs become chocolate?

Today’s Easter Egg market reaches every age – hollow eggs filled with every confectionary possible, adorning shop shelves from the day after Boxing Day! Yet no matter how fancy the wrapper or size and shape of the packaging, that’s all they are – a decorated egg.

As the centuries passed, egg shaped toys were given to children at Easter. The Victorians gave and received satin-covered cardboard eggs filled

So the next time you bite into an indulgent Easter Egg, don’t forget its humble yet far-reaching pagan and Christian origins.

Spring Buzz The buzz of the first bee is an indicator that spring is on its way! We are all growing increasingly aware of how important bee pollination is to us, without them crops would fail sending food prices rocketing and causing many plants and animals to become extinct. As well as honeybees, bumble bees play an important role in pollination. So how do bumblebees and honeybees differ and what can we do to reduce the decline? There are 24 species of bumblebee in the UK compared to the single species of honeybee found in Europe. Easily recognisable by their fluffy bodies making them much more suitable for colder climates, bumblebees rarely sting or swarm unless threatened, with only the females and workers having a sting. Their nests are similar in size to half a grapefruit with around 200 individuals compared to honeybee colonies which often reach 100,000. Only fertilised queen bumblebees hibernate as the old queens and drones die once temperatures drop and independent males die after mating. A fertilised queen overwinters at the bottom of hedges, in sheds or log piles and wakes in the spring to build a new nest, often attracted to old mouse nests by smell. They feed on pollen sometimes collected by sonication or buzz pollination; the bee holds the flower and quickly beats its muscles causing vibrations which dislodge pollen from the anthers, something that honeybees do not do; this is particularly effective with tomatoes and potatoes. Bumblebees like to nest in the ground in dark dry places like mouse holes or upturned pots - you could

make your own artificial bumblebee nest as outlined on the gardeners world website www.gardenersworld.com – how to make a bumblebee nest. Two species of bumblebee have become extinct in the last 80years in the UK, mainly due to changes in agricultural techniques, a decline in wildflower meadows and a decline in suitable flowering plants in our gardens; this has also caused a decline in our solitary bee numbers. You could let your grass grow a little longer allowing clover flowers to grow, seed a wildflower meadow or patch, plant herbs, wild roses or lavender and grow early spring bulbs and flowers for the queens which emerge in February/March. Scientists also believe that violet and purple flowers are more attractive to bumblebees and that colonies do better fed on pollen from a purple flower. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust have an extensive list of plants and tips that can encourage bees to your garden. Rebecca Golder Assistant Ecologist, ACIEEM

It’s time to Spring clean your finances Spring is on its way and the days are getting longer and whilst the supermarkets start stocking up the aisles with chocolate shaped eggs and fluffy bunnies, you may be forgiven not to notice that the end of the Tax Year is nearly upon us. But everyone knows you can put all of that horrible filing and paperwork off until next January – right? Wrong. This is the perfect time to get up to date, catch up on all that bookkeeping and get your records to your accountant whilst the past years information is still at your finger tips. For most small businesses March is the UK’s most popular year end and many businesses are put off by the daunting task of putting their bookkeeping records together. Willow Edge Accountants have an easy 5 step approach to spring clean your finances;

Step one – Focus! Step two– take hold of that massive shoe box and start sorting all those receipts month by month, try to record all your income and expenditure on a spreadsheet. The more you can do yourself the more money you can save in accountancy fees.

Step four – plan for the following year. Start new files and put a note in your diary setting aside time each week or month to keep your records up to date. Little and often will save you time in the long run which can be better spent on what you do best – building your business. Step five – if this has all been too much, get in touch!

Willow Edge Accountants are a proactive firm of accountants based in the village of Barby. Their director; Caroline Overton has had many years of experience working with small owner managed businesses helping them will all aspects of accountancy and taxation. Celeriac Soup

Look good, feel good

Coffee cup trivia

What change would improve your life? l Does anxiety or stress shape your day?

l Is your enjoyment of life tainted by fear or phobia? l Do you lack confidence or suffer from low self esteem? l Is your enjoyment of life limited by constant or restrictive pain? l Is your life restricted through irritable bowel syndrome? l Would you like more control over eating habits, or to stop smoking?

Ingredients • A ‘glug’ of olive oil • I-2 large onion • 3-4 garlic cloves • 1-2 large potatoes, peeled, chopped • 1 large celeriac, peeled, chopped • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 pints chicken or vegetable stock • Garnish • Natural yoghurt or double cream • Fresh parsley Method • Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, • Finely chop the onion and fry until soft • Crush the garlic add to pan and cook for one minute. • Chop the potato and celeriac and add to the pan, fry for a further five minutes keep stirring to make sure nothing sticks. • Season with salt and black pepper to taste. • Add the stock and bring to boil, then simmer for fifteen minutes, or until the potato and celeriac have softened. • Remove the soup from the heat and leave to cool for a few minutes, then blend using hand blender. • To serve, pour into a bowl add a swirl of yoghurt or double cream, and a sprinkle of parsley. • Delicious served with a warm bread roll Alternatives • Try using a large leek instead of one of the onions. • Instead of the cream/yoghurt, put a small amount of blue cheese in the bottom of the bowl before adding the soup. • Add a dash of Worcester sauce for a bit extra bite.

Female Urinary Incontinence

With it’s not just about what you lose, it’s about what you get back!

What is it and how to stop it interrupting your lifestyle Urinary Incontinence (UI) is ‘the complaint of any involuntary leakage of urine’. The most common form is “stress U.I” which is leakage of urine on coughing, sneezing, laughing or during any physical exertion. It has been estimated that U.I. affects over 20% of the over 40’s. It can be very distressing and lead to embarrassment and exclusion from normal social activities. Most women do not appreciate that effective treatments are available which do not involve the use of drugs. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance states that training and strengthening of the Pelvic Floor muscles is primary course of action. The Pelvic Floor consists of layers of muscle which help to support the bladder, womb and bowel and to close the bladder outlet and back passage.

Appropriate exercises prescribed by a Women’s health specialist can strengthen these muscles so that they provide the necessary support. This will help to improve bladder and bowel control and leakage of urine. Research has shown that pelvic floor muscle training is more effective than drugs. Urinary Incontinence can have a major impact on all aspects of a women’s life. However, this need not be the case and help can be simple and very effective, a typical course of treatment would include an initial assessment, followed by the teaching of a simple pelvic floor muscle training programme. Most women need expert advice in order to assist them in obtaining the maximum benefits.

The English pub The local pub. A place to relax, meet friends and family, enjoy a bar snack or hearty meal, have a game of darts or skittles, enjoy the sunshine in the beer garden, snuggle up in front of a roaring fire, break up a ramble or walk with the dog... and therein is the point – a pub often becomes what its locals need it to be, and a great pub becomes the heart of its community. The pub is one of England’s most unique institutions and an essential part of our heritage. Established in 1189, Nottingham’s ‘Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem’ claims to be the oldest pub in England, with other names such as ‘Saracen’s Head’ and ‘The Turk’s Head’ derived from that time. Religion, royalty, sports, local trades and ‘famous’ names such as Lord Nelson were also popular. And the most popular pub name in the UK? The Red Lion! Originally a public place where people are able to gather and drink, pubs have evolved to become a place in which to eat, be entertained and conduct

business. Whereas peanuts and crisps used to be all that were on offer, we now expect pubs to serve food. Children were once prohibited from entering many locals; most are now welcomed with their own separate menus. And although cock-fighting and badger-baiting is no longer the norm, many local pubs have their own pool, darts and football teams and have become instrumental in keeping certain sporting traditions alive, such as skittles and dominoes. There was a time in the 1970s when owners of centuries-old village pubs bowed to pressure and destroyed cosy, character-filled little nooks and crannies in favour of creating a single open space, or turned their pubs into themed or chain pubs. Although these modern developments will continue to have their place, CAMRA has been able to successfully work alongside landlords to preserve our long and rich history of ale houses, taverns, inns and public houses.

Win £150 necklace from Jewel of Daventry We all like to look our best at parties and gatherings and choosing which piece of jewellery to wear with that special outfit is so important. Buying an item of jewellery from an independent jeweller will ensure you have quality, style and elegance befitting the occasion. And this is where Jewel of Daventry sets itself apart from the competition. Located on Daventry’s High Street, this independent jeweller offers a truly eclectic range of exclusive jewellery, watches and fashion accessories you simply won’t find on most high streets. “Unique Jewels, Virtue, Giorgio Martello and White Ice are just some of the designers exclusive to us,” explains owner, Dean Metcalfe. “No, they’re not as well known as some of the bigger names, but when it comes to choosing a piece of jewellery that reflects your unique personality and style, isn’t that the point? Would you not prefer to walk away with something no-one else has?” And now new to its excellent range of jewellery is Virtue Keepsakes. Virtue Keepsakes is the embodiment of ‘one-off’ jewellery – a collection of beautiful Sterling Silver customisable lockets you can personalise to suit your individual style. Choose from a range of chains and lockets to begin with, before selecting your favourite inserts, which are finished with real stones, Motherof-Pearl or Cubic Zirconia.

THE FIVE BELLS AT BUGBROOKE Overlooking the historic church in the charming village of Bugbrooke is the Five Bells, a welcoming pub that offers a wide range of good, honest grub.

Fussy, overpriced dishes complete with ‘jus’, ‘fondant’ or ‘caramelised’ in the title are not on the menu – the Five Bells is all about hearty, traditional pub food, such as daily soups, home cooked pie and mash, steaks and gammon, served in a spacious restaurant area complete with log burner, flagstones and wood panelling. Throughout the week there is a great value twocourse menu, and children have their own menu that is sure to satisfy even the fussiest of eaters. Having taken over in July 2013, new landlord

Andrew Rayner is keen to appeal to all ages, with loyalty cards for regular patrons, plans for a bouncy castle every weekend during the summer holidays and a burgeoning pool team currently looking for male and female players. Keen walkers? The Five Bells is the ideal base; you can either have a full English breakfast before you set off or order your food before your leave and enjoy a much-needed hot meal after your walk. Breakfast is served from 10am to noon on weekends; main menus are available from noon until late seven days a week. Please call the Five Bells in Bugbrooke on 01604 831 618.

d a e r d o o Ag Sophie’s Bakery for the Broken Hearted Lolly Winston 36-year-old Sophie has just lost her husband, Ethan, to cancer. She had only been married a few years and is devastated. Lolly Winston takes us on a journey through the emotional rollercoaster of bereavement and its different stages, from denial to acceptance. At first Sophie is a wreck, someone who sleeps all day and guzzles cartons of ice cream for breakfast. When she shows up for work, distraught in her bathrobe and bunny slippers, she finds she’s not only lost her husband but her job in a Silicon Valley PR firm. Distraught, Sophie leaves California for Ashland, Oregon and through the fog of her grief starts to rebuild her life. She discovers a previously hidden talent and opens the bakery of the title. Along the way she has to deal with her mother-in-law and also collects a rag-taggle bunch of new friends who variously try to seduce her, support her and burn her house down. As she juggles her business with her new life, Sophie proves that with enough humour and bravado it is possible to rebuild a life after a devastating loss. And who’s to say she can’t find love again in the process... Lolly Winston knows how to tug the heart strings. Sophie’s grief is present throughout

the book, and heartbreakingly raw, yet the book is funny, touching and uplifting by turn. Even at her lowest, Sophie maintains a wry sense of humour: on an application which asks who to contact in case of emergency, she finds that she has no name to enter so writes “George Clooney”. Keep the Kleenex handy - this novel will have even the hardest-hearted reader in tears.

The Magic Paintbrush Julia Donaldson and Joel Stewart

Julia Donaldson is peerless as a writer for 3-6 year-olds yet her story themes appeal to adults too, which means they don’t mind reading them again and again. She’s as much a master of ‘distilling language’ as any poet, making every word count. In addition she uses the natural rhythm of the spoken voice – which is what makes her stories ideal for reading aloud. The Magic Paint Brush is an immensely charming tale and the illustrations are quite beautiful and appropriately Chinese in style. Shen is a little girl who is given the gift of a magic brush which makes everything she paints come to life. But with this power comes great responsibility. How will this smart little girl deal with a greedy emperor who wants her to help make him even richer? The results are delightful, beautiful and poetic.
