Nature’s own carpet I bet a lot of you reading this have spent time and energy trying to eradicate moss from your lawn? But it just keeps reappearing in a particular place probably because the damp shady conditions are pretty much perfect for it to thrive. Mind you, moss raked out from a problem area on your lawn, is great for lining hanging baskets! These moist, shady conditions along our hedgerows and in woodlands are great hunting grounds for spotting a myriad variety of mosses; over 600 species grow in the UK. Although mosses have stems and leaves, they do not have roots but produce spores. They are reliant on damp conditions because a male cell needs to move via a film of water to reach female cells for fertilisation. However, moss does absorb huge quantities of water thus helping soak up rainfall while providing a wonderful habitat for woodlice and slugs. The blackbirds constantly rummage through the moss on my lawn for a tasty meal and will also take mouthfuls of moss off for nest building so all in all it can be a win-win situation! There can be nothing more magical than finding a green carpet of moss alongside a stream in the woods or fields where the humidity from the water along with dead organic material produces the perfect natural conditions to allow moss to spawn. At this time of year, before grasses and leaves start to grow, I urge you to ‘Look Closer’ and marvel at the fabulous formation of the little leaves and delight in the incredible shades of green in their soft layers that carpets everything around!

Moss is a very valuable resource for me as a florist, particularly at Christmas as a base for my natural door wreaths, but moss is so beautiful for natural decoration purposes and used in many of the funeral tributes I create, particularly for ‘green’ burials. Over the last year and moving forward, like many florists, I aim to stop using floral foam in my floristry practice. I am so concerned about the harmful chemicals and plastics used in its production, none of which are biodegradable after use. This has meant rethinking the techniques I use to create arrangements and installations particularly for wedding and event work – but ‘mossages’ have been a revelation! These are tubes or balls of chicken wire filled with wet moss that can provide the base for floral arches, large urn arrangements, small table decorations, etc. Clever use of jam jars full of water and moss, suspended by wire, provided enough water to keep even the most beautiful English roses alive during the heatwave of last summer!! The best thing about mossages is that they are recyclable – just keep them wet and the moss will grow! Happy moss hunting! Sue x

By March Christmas can seem like a distant memory: toys and games which were desired for months beforehand, are now no longer new. The excitement of a new toy soon faded, but the big box in which it was wrapped provided entertainment for a much greater length of time because it could be turned into a car, a bus, a den or a robot. When designing a family garden the same principal can go into a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a climbing frame; a slide, or trampoline. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can ‘accidentally’ find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds.

There are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly too very toxic. The vast majority of plants taste so disgusting that a child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!).

Creative play Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud (obviously for making mud pies or sloppy dosh). Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. When you see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, look closer and you may see it has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self-contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; washing line poles to climb, and a small bridge to cross when escaping from trolls…the usual thing!

Foxgloves, fungi and delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful, but we still grow them in schools.

Garden education Garden education at a young age is the key, and given most under 3’s won’t be outside alone in the garden it shouldn’t be a problem … anyway, they’ll be too busy playing to eat the plants!

Recipe Sunday dinners

Roast leg of lamb with basil & mint pesto Ingredients 2kg lamb leg, skin scored Fresh garden herbs, to serve (optional) Sliced lemom, to serve (optional) For the pesto 1 small garlic clove, roughly chopped Small pack basil, leaves only Small pack mint, leaves only 25g pine nuts 25g grated parmesan 125ml extra virgin olive oil Juice Â˝ lemon Method First, make the pesto. Put all the ingredients (except the olive oil and lemon juice) and a pinch of salt into the small bowl of a food processor. Pulse until very finely chopped. While the processor is on, drizzle the olive oil in to make a paste. Tip the pesto into a small bowl and stir in the lemon juice. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put the scored lamb leg in a large roasting tin and use half the pesto to generously coat the skin and flesh, pressing it between all the cracks for extra juiciness. Put the rest of the pesto in the fridge, covered with cling film, and remove just before serving. Roast the lamb for 1 hr 45 mins. Check during cooking that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not drying out â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if the base of the roasting tin starts to look dry, spread a little more pesto over the top of the lamb.

Scrummy crumpets with Somerset goatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cheese, beetroot and fresh rhubarb & ginger marmalade Ingredients 400g fresh red rhubarb, roughly chopped 2cm fresh ginger, peeled and grated 1 clove garlic, crushed (optional) 5 tbsp white sugar 350g approx. fresh beetroot (about 2 medium / large beetroot), keep whole 4 crumpets 200g goatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cheese cut into 6 slices 25g butter for crumpets mint leaves to garnish

Method To make the marmalade: put the rhubarb, ginger, sugar and garlic (if used) into a processor and process until the mixture is very finely chopped. Turn into a small saucepan and simmer, uncovered, for about 1 hour until thick, stirring now and again to stop burning on the bottom of the pan. Allow to cool.

Scrub the beetroots and cut the stalks down to 2.5cms above the bulb. Either: boil in plenty of water until soft (about 40-50 minutes depending on size). Drain, cover, and leave to cool (about 1-2 hours). Or: wrap in foil and bake at 200C / 400F / Gas 6 for about 40-60 minutes until soft, depending on the size of the beetroot. Leave to cool then skin the beetroot and slice thinly. Preheat oven to 200C / 400F / Gas 6. Toast the crumpets and lightly butter them. Place on a baking tray and divide the sliced beetroot and goatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cheese between them. Place in the oven for about 5-7 minutes until warmed through. Garnish with a mint leaf and serve with the marmalade in small ramekins on the side.

Easter Sunday, 21st April In a nutshell Palm Sunday is the day that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday is the day of the Last Supper and Good Friday is the day of Jesus’ crucifixion and death. Easter Sunday comes as a huge celebration at the end of Lent with feasting and treats, commemorating the day that Jesus rose from the dead. Christians remember Maundy Thursday as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist. In the UK Easter is one of the major Christian festivals of the year. It is full of customs, folklore and traditional food. However, Easter in Britain has its beginnings long before the arrival of Christianity. Many theologians believe Easter itself is named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn and spring - Eostre.

Maundy money In Britain, the Queen takes part in the Ceremony of the Royal Maundy, which dates back to Edward 1. This involves the distribution of Maundy Money to deserving senior citizens (one man and one woman for each year of the sovereign’s age), usually chosen for having done service to their community. They receive ceremonial red and white purses which contain coins made especially

for the occasion. The white purse contains one coin for each year of the monarch’s reign. The red purse contains money in place of other gifts that used to be given to the poor. In the 17th century, the King or Queen would wash the feet of the selected poor people as a gesture of humility, and in remembrance of Jesus’s washing the feet of the disciples. The last monarch to do this was James II.

Easter eggs!! Easter eggs are a very old tradition going to a time before Christianity. Eggs after all are a symbol of spring and new life. In the UK before they were replaced by chocolate, real eggs were hard-boiled and dyed in various colours and patterns. The traditionally bright colours represented spring and light. Sadly, nowadays if you gave a child in Britain a hard-boiled egg on Easter Sunday, you would probably end up wearing it! An older more traditional game is one in which real eggs are rolled against one another or down a hill. The owner of the egg that stayed un-cracked the longest won. Even today in Preston, Lancashire, they still carry out the custom of hard boiled eggs being rolled down slopes to see whose egg goes furthest.

The hare was allegedly a companion of the ancient Moon goddess and of Eostre. The first edible Easter bunnies appeared in Germany during the early 1800s, they were made of pastry and sugar. The Friday before Easter Sunday and the Monday after are a bank holiday in the UK. Over Easter schools in the UK close for two weeks, just enough time to digest all the chocolate!!

900 years of History Delapre Abbey - Northampton During the many years I lived in Northampton, I knew of Delapre Abbey but I was unable to visit these historic buildings until very recently in 2018. The 900 year old Delapre Abbey had come very close to being demolished on a number of occasions, most notably in 1954 when a plan to pull down the buildings was narrowly defeated and it became the home of the Northamptonshire Record Office in 1959, giving the Abbey and estate a new lease of life for the next forty years. A £3.65 million Heritage Lottery funded restoration programme, a passionate band of volunteers and Northampton Borough Council have all contributed to restoring the Abbey, outbuilding, parkland and estate, to help create a new community venue and visitor attraction. With modern interactive hands-on displays, visitors are now able to discover the history of the Abbey, enjoy the peace and quiet of the gardens or grab a bite to eat in the Orangery café and Billiard Room, which has pleasant views across 500 acres of park land and a golf course. I was educated about the importance of the Battle of Northampton, which was fought within the grounds of the Abbey, during the Wars of the Roses and found the several unrestored rooms on the first floor of the Abbey,

particularly interesting. The Nine seemingly unrelated objects helped me focus on nine particularly significantly different events in the 900 year old history of the Abbey. The gardens are superb, there was a large walled garden and the hidden remains of a water garden. The open spaces of the lawn, the fabulous trees of the small arboretum and the trails through a coppice of trees are ideal spaces for children to run, play and explore. There is so much to see from the colourful flowers, the ancient trees and mature shrubs. You can also book a garden tour with one of the knowledgeable guides to enhance your visit even further. The formal walled garden offers visitors the chance to relax and enjoy a real blast of colour during the summer. The garden is filled with reminders of the Abbey’s long and varied history from the small herb garden and the modern sculptures produced by nationally celebrated artists. The allotment beds and greenhouses provide organically grown produce for use in the Orangery café and you may also find some of the plants for sale in the shop, at times throughout the year. Beyond the Abbey buildings you can explore over 500 acres of parkland with a mix of woodland and open grasslands, crossed by several paths. The parkland also includes an equestrian centre, angling club and a public golf course, providing a range of sporting activities for visitors.

A path alongside the London Road will take you to the Eleanor Cross, one of twelve memorial crosses built by King Edward I to commemorate the resting places of his wife, Queen Eleanors funeral cortege in 1291. Recent conservation work on the cross has made it well worth the time to visit. Delapré Lake is also a sanctuary for both wildlife and numerous leisure activities including water skiing and angling. It is a real delight for anglers, as the lake contains Carp, as well as plenty of Bream and Tench. Don’t forget to call into the Abbey shop which has a wonderful selection of souvenirs inspired by the history of the Abbey and its grounds. If you are looking for a local day out, I would fully recommend a visit to Delapre Abbey, whatever the season. Did you know? Nether Heyford has one of the largest village greens in England?

Flore (or historically spelt Floore) is a fabulous village which is laden with hidden treasures to explore. Along this walk you will come across a tree with a hollow that is so deep you can’t help but put your head inside to investigate, as well as stunning fields, well kept pathways, a few stiles (which are dog friendly), a fabulous Grade II listed church which has artefacts that date back to the 1400’s and a very beautiful house that glows in the dark! History fact: The thatched cottage in Flore called Adams Cottage is said to be the home of the ancestors of John Adams, the second President of the United States of America. (Wikipedia) Route: Starting from Weedon Cemetery you will head towards the A5 and cross the main road. This is a busy road, so please be vigilant whilst crossing. Follow the footpath signs along as you walk over a couple of small bridges and a few open fields. You will see the church in the distance which is your first mini pit-stop. I urge you to

The footpath is clearly signposted and you will notice that the River Nene is a constant presence on your right hand side until you reach the village of Nether Heyford.

We are not walking by Whitehall Farm, Nether Heyford, but it is interesting to note that two bodies were discovered there a few years ago (2015) by metal detectors! The area turned out to be a rather well kept Anglo Saxon Cemetery, but I can imagine it was all rather exciting at the time! As you reach the outskirts of Nether Heyford take the footpath that leads off to the right (do not follow the path into the village). This footpath takes you along the rear of some modern houses, but this is also where you will spot the special “empty” tree! Continue along the footpath and you will start to see the Grand Union Canal on your left. Before you reach Heyford Lane, take a right onto the towpath. Please be aware that there are elements of the towpath that are rather narrow, therefore I would recommend walking this section in single file. You will spot moorhens, swans and many other wildlife along this stretch of waterways. It is extremely peaceful, even with the distance hum of a canal boat engine or two.

You will pass Stowe Hill Marina on your left, then continue along the footpath and go under the A5. From here, you have a choice. You can either continue along the footpath until you reach steps that go up (on your right) and take the last ¼ mile over the open fields, or continue along the footpath until you see steps that go down, which brings you out to where you started! (if you wanted the longer route then I suggest the first option).

There is something magical about walking in the winter time. Whether it’s the frosty footsteps, the clear crisp air, or the breathtaking views, it’s a wonderful time to go walking and Northamptonshire/Warwickshire have many walks that we can enjoy right on our doorstep.

Parking: There are a few options for parking. Either park at the Narrow Boat Pub, A5 Watling Street, Weedon and commence your walk from there (please only park there if you intend to use their services). Alternatively, park at Weedon Cemetery, Church Street, Weedon. NN7 4ED.

Daventry once had two cinema’s The Regal in New Street and The Rex Cinema in Warwick Street, The Rex Cinema was opened in the 1920’s, It had a 20 feet wide proscenium with between 200 and 280 seats and was equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system in 1930. It ran mainly second run films to the towns’ Regal Cinema (also operated by the same owners at one time), playing many westerns and ‘B’ movies. The Rex Cinema was Picture courtesy of Mr Denis still open in 1954, but MacDonnell (Daventry) was closed soon after.

Method Heat oven to 180C/160C/gas 4. To make the custard, heat the milk, cream and vanilla pod with its scraped out seeds (if using) together in a saucepan to just below boiling point. Meanwhile whisk the eggs and yolk with the caster sugar in a jug. Slowly pour the warm milk mixture, including the vanilla pod, over the eggs, stirring constantly until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract now if using. Lightly butter an ovenproof dish approximately 20cm x 25cm x 5cm. Cut the crusts from the bread slices, then butter both sides of the bread and cut into triangles. Lay half of the bread slices in the bottom of the dish so that they are slightly overlapping. Mix the dried fruit with the lemon zest and sprinkle half of the mix over the bread. Layer the rest of the bread on top then sprinkle over the remaining fruit.

White chocolate & raspberry cheesecake Ingredients Base 75g Melted butter 200g Crushed digestive biscuits Filling 280ml Double cream 300g White chocolate 500g Mascarpone 200g Frozen raspberries Serves 6 1 x small spring cake tin Method Base: Line the base of the cake time with greaseproof paper. Mix the crushed biscuits and melted butter. Press into case of prepared tin and refrigerate to set. Filling: Gently melt the white chocolate in a bowl over simmering water. Meanwhile soften the mascarpone in your mixer or with an electric whisk. Softly whip the cream in a separate bowl and then fold into the mascarpone.

Daventry in History On May 5th, 1962, the doors to the towns brand new ÂŁ42,000 outdoor pool were opened by former Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Judy Grinham. On the opening night of the outdoor pool in 1962 the swimming club already had 100 members, and by the end of summer 1963 it had 294 members. The money for the pool was raised by local people running a weekly tote.

LNBP Community Boating is a registered not-for-profit charity run by volunteers who each year provide the opportunity for groups, clubs and associations with members aged 8 years upwards to enjoy inexpensive canal boating trips and short break holidays on the Grand Union and Oxford Canals in Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and the Midlands. LNBP Community Boating have two boats - called Lancelot and Guinevere - moored at the historic junction of those canals at Braunston in Northamptonshire. Each is fitted with a modern well-equipped galley complete with refrigerator and microwave, two toilets, sleeping accommodation and central heating. Both boats are operated by experienced and fully-qualified skippers who take responsibility for the running of the boat throughout the trip and provide guests with an insight into the boats, the history of the canals and local area. There is opportunity for group members to try their hand at many activities including steering the boats through open countryside, photography, countryside walks, team building and route planning. Or simply sit back, relax and take in the views and the peace and quiet, and enjoy watching the world go by at a slower pace.

Patrick Holford returns to Sheaf Street Renowned nutritionist and author Patrick Holford is returning to Sheaf Street Health Store, Daventry’s only independent specialist health food shop. Both have been shown to cause more weight loss than a conventional low calorie, low fat diet”, says Patrick. “But switching between the two has even more health advantages. The hybrid way of eating gives the benefits of fasting without going hungry and reduces risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and cognitive decline as well as slowing the ageing process.” Patrick adds: “We are not designed to eat the same thing every day.
