Top Tuition – 30 YEARS OF 11+ PASSES Beating the winter blues What questions do you have about your health? Continuing our series from Sheaf Street Health Store, this time we look at a concern that seems to surface as the nights get longer. This article does not seek to diagnose or treat; if you are suffering from any health condition or are currently taking prescribed medication, please consult your GP before considering any complementary therapies. Q. Once the clocks change I just feel like I lose my “get up and go”. Is there anything I can do? A. There are lots of things we recommend for the darker months, starting with a healthy, varied diet that includes plenty of fruit and veg, healthy protein and some essential fats. Add regular exercise, hydration and a good sleep pattern and you’ll be doing yourself a lot of good. The dark days and the angle of the sun to the earth means that in the UK the natural production of vitamin D from sunlight is impossible. It is common at this time of year for people to feel low in mood; research has shown that supplemental vitamin D can offer relief for this seasonal affective disorder (SAD). However, several other nutrients and supplements are considered mood boosters, this includes a regular

14

intake of oily fish or algae-derived EPA and DHA, saffron, turmeric, magnesium-rich nuts, seeds and leafy greens plus B vitamins. In the UK we use a lot of artificial light in the autumn and winter, which can affect our daily rhythm. Once sleep becomes inadequate, mood can be affected. Aim for around 8 hours of sleep nightly. Save bed for ‘fun times’ and sleep, so that means no TVs, internet use and turning off laptops, phones and tablets. SAD lamps can be a great way to reset the circadian rhythm, they introduce dawn-mimicking light that gradually culminates with the alarm, tricking the body to think it has been woken by morning sunlight. At the health store we stock a wide variety of whole foods and nutritional supplements, and we can recommend options for particular needs, such as vegans and vegetarians. Don’t let the cold and dark put you off staying active: we offer yoga and Pilates classes that you can do in the warm and dry all year round.

PRE-RETIREMENT EDUCATION CLASS PRE-RETIREMENT A Most Valuable Lesson! EDUCATION CLASS If you are 45 or older then it is time to consider planning the transition

Most Valuable into A your retirement. Join us Lesson! and gather an understanding of: Lining your ducks up for retirement Are you looking to retire early? Have you been made redundant and maybe considering early retirement or simply wish to reduce your working hours? If so, how do you know if you will have sufficient pension funds to meet any shortfall in income and would your pension assets last a lifetime if you dipped into them early? At The Pension House we provide advice to individuals who are preparing for retirement. We help them assess if they have sufficient assets to achieve their goals. We can recommend solutions to meet those objectives. We provide advice on all types of pensions including defined benefit/final salary style pension benefits.

Stage 2: Following the assessment, you can choose to appoint The Pension House to provide a Stage 2 recommendation. Here we recommend a solution to meet your objectives. Fees for advice in this respect are quoted when we meet to discuss the assessment findings. Often our fees can be deducted from a pension fund rather than charged to the client directly. You are not obliged to take up our stage 2 services. If you are planning to retire pop over and see us here in Nobottle and have your pensions checked out. We will have the kettle on! Contact us: The Pension House Company Limited E: jane@pensionhouse.org.uk T: 01604 588293

First of all, we meet to see if we can help you, the first meeting is provided free of charge if held at our office in Nobottle. If it is established that we can help you our advice is provided in two stages: Stage 1: We undertake an assessment of your pension affairs including a forecast to gauge if you have sufficient assets to retire. This can be provided from £350 for an individual or £500 for couples with joint income/ expenditure needs. These fees are subject to VAT. The assessment will demonstrate ‘where you are now’ and if there is a shortfall in meeting your objectives.

Lumps, bumps and skin changes!! What to do if you notice skin changes If you notice anything unusual on your skin that does not go away after four weeks, show it to your doctor. Remember that there are many other skin conditions that are not cancer, especially in older people. It can be more difficult to notice changes if you have darker skin.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) Basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is a cancer of the basal cells at the bottom of the epidermis. It is sometimes called a rodent ulcer. It is very common. About 75% of all skin cancers in the UK are BCCs. Most BCCs are very slowgrowing and almost never spread to other parts of the body. Nearly everyone with a BCC who has treatment is completely cured.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) Squamous cell carcinoma, or SCC, is a cancer of the cells in the outer layer of the skin. It is the second most common type of skin cancer in the UK. Most people treated for SCC are completely cured. Usually, SCCs are slow-growing. They only spread to other parts of the body if they are left untreated for a long time.

Why self-examination is important for women and men! One in eight women will get breast cancer, yet over a third of women don’t check themselves regularly for early tell-tale signs that could save lives. Regular self-examination should take place around the same time every month to help you become familiar with the natural shape and feel of your breasts. Any changes should be easily detected, in particular puckering and

24

dimpling of the skin, new pain that doesn’t go away, lumps or bumps not present in the other breast, and unusual discharge, bleeding or rash from the nipple. Testicular cancer is a young man’s disease, with males aged 15-35 being most at risk. Early diagnosis can be life-saving, yet only 1 in 5 men check themselves monthly. During or after a warm bath or shower is the best time to self-examine, when the muscles are relaxed and hang lower. Danger signs include pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum; a dragging feeling in the scrotum; a dull ache in the groin or lower stomach; excess fluid in the scrotum; blood in the sperm and discharge from the penis.

Don’t miss a regular screening test Smear tests prevent 75% of cervical cancers, so while they may not be pleasant, they are important. It can save lives by finding cancers at an early stage, or even preventing them. Women screened between the ages of 35 to 64 are thought to have a 60 to 80% lower risk of being diagnosed with cervical cancer in the 5 years following the test compared to women who haven’t been screened. Bowel cancer screening programmes involves sending a testing kit every 2 years to people eligible to take part. In England, men & women between the ages of 60 and 74 years take part. So don’t put off your appointment for breast, cervical or bowel screening, it could save your life!

Walking in the shadow of a President – Sulgrave Manor There have been forty-five presidents of the United States of America and I recently visited Sulgrave Manor, a beautiful country Manor House which had been built in the sixteenth century by Lawrence Washington, a direct ancestor of George Washington, the very first President of the United States from 1789-1797. Lawrence Washington had even been Mayor of Northampton in 1532! Sulgrave Manor is a Tudor and Georgian house located in the picturesque village of Sulgrave, thirteen miles from Daventry, 20 miles from Northampton and just ten miles from Towcester. Built of local limestone the Manor House retains many of the original features of Washington’s Tudor house, including the Great Hall. The hall has beamed ceilings and a stone floor, plus a very impressive Tudor fireplace which also includes a salt cupboard, carved with Lawrence Washington’s initials. Above the mantel is a treasured painting of George Washington attributed to Gilbert Stuart. Behind the Great Hall is a staircase with twisted balusters that takes you up to the Great Chamber or main bedroom and two smaller 18th century bedrooms. These contain examples of Tudor clothes, shoes, furniture and an 18th century baby-walker. The embroidered decorative hanging from the four-poster bed in the main bedroom depicting scenes from both English and American life is excellent. In 1700 the North Wing was built which is at right angles to the Tudor section and contains the Oak Parlour and

Great Kitchen on the ground level. The kitchen was full of interesting items. The large Inglenook fireplace contained three ovens and a charcoal brazier for heating irons. There is also a spit, which was turned by a series of wheels and chains. There were lots of pots and pans, utensils and menus showing some of the food of the time including Swan Pie! The western section of the house had been destroyed before the house was purchased in 1914 but this has now been replaced by the Director’s quarters that were built in the 1920s, with the projecting two-storey porch in a central position at the front of the building. Set in plaster over the doorway are the royal arms of England and initials “ER” for Elizabeth Regina commemorating Elizabeth I. The doorway spandrels, between the arches above the door are decorated with the Washington family arms: two bars and three mullets or spur-rowels, the same coat of arms which can be seen above the fireplace at Mt. Vernon, the historic home of George Washington in the USA. The gardens remain largely unaltered since the 1920`s when it was redesigned and today visitors can view the formal hedgerows, topiary, orchard, herb garden and flowering borders. A separate wedding venue and learning centre which contains several artefacts and objects associated with George Washington. There is also a small old blacksmith building at the far end of the gardens. By 1840, the building had become almost derelict but in

1914 the house was bought by public subscription to celebrate a century of peace between the UK and USA since the War of 1812 and the house was finally restored between 1920–30. Since 1997 the house has been managed by the Sulgrave Manor Board and has been awarded a Grade I listing. Sulgrave Manor comes to life with costumed interpreters and displays. Visitors can discover how the English Civil War, financial ruin, and a shipwreck led to George Washington’s great-grandfather seeking a fresh start in the New World for his family and the rest is history! The tour guides are very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing their stories and factual history about George Washington, Tudor Life and the Manor House. The Brewhouse Tea Room is the place to relax with a tea or coffee and cake in comfortable surroundings. The Gift Shop is where you can find souvenirs of your visit including books, stationery, postcards, fragrances and garden gifts. You could also put your partner in the Pillory stocks for a quick photo opportunity! Sulgrave Manor’s fascinating history, compact size, beautifully maintained gardens and Brewhouse make it an ideal family destination for a short educational, relaxing experience. There is plenty of free parking for visitors and there is also a very welcoming pub in the village called The Star Inn, a short walk from the Manor House. The Stress Solution by Dr Rangan Chatterjee We were very impressed by Dr Chatterjee’s Four Pillar Plan at the Health Store, and this is a great followup. It’s easy to read and a pleasure to look at. What you notice is that it’s right to the point and full of great, well-explained ideas that real people can actually use. You can tell that Rangan understands that there’s a lot more to a full, balanced life than ‘stop eating all carbs and lift some weights’. It’s not about making drastic, impossible changes at all: The Stress Solution reveals ways that we can improve our health and quality of life through small adjustments that make a big impact. It’s dough joke – one million slices of bread go in the bin EVERY HOUR Did you know that you can toast bread straight from the freezer and still have the same delicious taste? Well it’s true! Every day in the UK, over 20 million slices of bread are thrown away - mostly because they are not used in time. That means that the average person in the UK throws out more than half of a loaf of bread every month! You can keep bread for longer by putting it in the freezer and then use it straight from frozen to make toast. Make Toast Not Waste encourages consumers to freeze bread and simply make toast straight from frozen, enjoying it in many different ways at all times of day. Use the following for inspiration:

Need a high-protein post-gym snack and think toast can’t give it to you? Think again. Toast is a filling and wholesome snack to eat following a work out. Try spreading on a thick layer of hummus and adding grated veg and seeds for an added protein hit.

Bored of your brunch?

Looking for a new breakfast to keep the whole family happy? Create a ‘Full English Toast’ by layering sliced sausage, a fried egg, tomato sauce and extra toast soldiers to dip in the runny yolk.

A toast of Italy!

Pizza toast makes an easy and tasty dinner option. Spread your toast with tomato paste, then add your favourite toppings, such as salami and cheese, before grilling.

Sunday lunch to Monday

If you’ve got weekend leftovers, rustle up a ‘Roast on toast’ by simply adding shredded beef and veggies of your choice to melt Monday Blues.

Kick-start your weekend with a sweet breakfast treat In need of a sweet treat? Slice apple thinly onto your toast, then add syrup and cinnamon, grill to create a wholesome dessert.

Cleansing the weekend away? Toast can be incorporated into your detox. Toast brown bread, then add sliced cucumber, radish, cress and seeds for a healthy way to enjoy bread. www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/toast

Autumn/Winter trends 2019 unveiled A Season of two halves speaking in the fashion sense. One side sees the return of the clean uncluttered minimalist look. So good news for those of you who favour neat tailoring and plainer fabrics. A more sober look indeed but equally very stylish and cool. Do a one-eighty and boom we have blinding colour, feathers, sequins and jumbo sized gowns! Fashion Theatre! Once this trend is diffused into more relatable wear the look is more playful and fun. This is a look for the girl in the woman who likes the dressing up box, fun and not too serious. A winter rainbow Colour pulsates through AW/19. We see wild splashes of intense colour. Not is it the reserve of a season gone by but for now too. The Autumn/Winter shows in all major Fashion capitals opened with sunflower yellow, turquoise, burnt orange, bougainvillea pink. Real spice, earthy colours are hugely within fashion also. If bright colour sends you reeling back then you’ll never see black, navy, grey disappear but think of adding a dash of these afore mentioned brights to liven up the core hues. Leather Leather in all it’s creations. Big names such as Hermes and McQueen have really embraced this look. Vegan leather in quality PU also included for those who would chose the alternative .Rino and Pelle, a trusty brand to adorn our rails for many a season have fantastic real or faux leather in jackets and coats predominantly. Robell have produced a leather look trouser in their well-fitting trousers. The fashion pack advise we should all invest in a pair of good leather trousers for AW/19. Pattern and surface texture A tirade of tartan, houndstooth, check and plaids paraded the runways. Our B Young brand include a check stretch jersey skirt and jacket combo to be worn together or separated. Fanciful feathers were seen countless times. Feather coats and capes, attached and adorned to garments. Worn in the hair. Sequins! Shine out in this reflective shimmery fabric surface but by day too!

Our favourite winter go-to Our complete and utter can’t be without it piece. The Jumper. Enjoy more fitted styles. Big baggy shapes. Those classic Brit patterns such as cable knits and argyle. Contemporary neo grunge knits with chains attached. Wear them them loose, tucked in or enveloped under a large blazer or duster coat. Our knitwear buy is always pretty wide and varied to cater for all tastes and budgets.

Daventry Food Festival

So what’s new? (branding) Depeche A handbag brand, remember the former bumbag from the days of the Nineties. Reimagine the look and wear across the body. These Danish beauties are made of the most gorgeous supple leather. Diana Wilson You may have seen our wonderful lifestyle items with Frida Kahlo images. This label is so eclectic , kitsch and exciting. Look out for her scarves next! La Fee Maraboutee The newbie for season. It’s a whimsical, spirited capsule of loveliness. The prints are detailed. The styling is feminine. Hard not to fall in love with it. That’s it for now I’m afraid. I’ve had to shrink my blog down as I could only cover so much as you can imagine. Should you want to find out any more, call in and see our collections for this new season or visit store online.

This is a very scenic trail that encompasses some of the famous Knightley Way, the beautiful Badby Woods and fantastic vistas as you look down over the Fawsley estate. Be aware that there are some steep sections which are guaranteed to increase your heart rate, but the cardio workout is worth it when you see those views! Fact: Badby Wood is owned by the Fawsley Estate, Badby Woods is open to the public and is famous for its bluebells. You enter the wood through what is left of a fantastic gatehouse. These woods are also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. THE ROUTE: You can find step by step photo instructions, along with a detailed map of this route on http://www.adventuregeek. co.uk/ag05 Parking at the small car park on Chapel Lane, Badby, NN11 3AQ (free parking), go through the kissing gate and head towards the woods. As you enter the woods via the fantastic remains of the old gatehouse, take the path to the left. You will now continue along the trail keeping the

As you pass through the woods you may feel that you have already had a workout as you are clambering over fallen trees and skirted around exposed tree roots. After a steep climb from within the woods you will reach the top where you will turn right. Keep the fence to your left and you will soon see the remains of the Dowers House.

After a short while you will see an arrow on a tree pointing to the left, this small incline will bring you out onto the most amazing vista. It is here that you will start to see signs for the Knightley Way. Fact: The Knightley Way was Northamptonshire’s first County Path. It was opened in 1972 on established public rights of way and it stretches between Badby and Greens Norton (approx. 12 miles). At the top of the vista continue straight ahead (do not be tempted to follow the public footpath signs to the right). You will soon see the large Knightley Way Disc signs in the distance – this is the trail that will take you through some spectacular views of Fawsley and will lead you to the Church. Fawlsey has connections with the Elephant Man, and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

Did you know? The Dower House in Fawsley Park was last inhabited in 1704 and now lies in ruins. It was built for Lady Ursula after Sur Edmund Knightly died. Continue along the track with the perimeter to your left. You will soon come across a huge dead tree. Be careful going down this steep decline! Take the fork to the left.

As you pass the peaceful lake on your right, and the ant hills on your left you will soon reach Fawsley Hall. Make a note to pop back for afternoon tea, before taking a right and following the green footpath sign. There are now a series of footpath signs and symbols to follow (photos are available online). Please also be aware that you may have to dig deep and fill your lungs with oxygen as you make the final climb before heading back into the woods. If you are thinking to yourself that this looks familiar, then you are correct. This is where you exited the woods a short while ago. We are now going to continue our circuit of Badby Woods by following the perimeter to the left. You can’t really go wrong, but some check points include a Fairies Meeting Place / children’s shrine, which is either really cute, or really creepy depending on your point of view. No-one seems to know the truth behind this little collection of strange children’s toys.

Lemon and pistachio syllabub Ingredients make 4 • • • • • • • •

8 shortbread biscuits - home-made if possible 50ml white wine 75g mascarpone 250ml double cream 4 tbsp icing sugar 8 tbsp lemon curd – homemade is better 2 tbsp crushed pistachios Lemon zest or fresh mint leaves to garnish

Method: Softly whip cream, mascarpone and icing sugar until soft peaks. Fold in the lemon curd and a splash of the wine. You are looking for a ‘ripple’ effect. Place one crumbled biscuit in the base of each glass. Then sprinkle the remaining wine over each biscuit. This softens the biscuits. Pipe the cream into the glasses. Decorate with the crushed pistachios, icing sugar and either lemon zest or fresh mint leaves. Chill in the fridge before serving. Darren Hill The Bell Inn Ladbroke

Feature Open fires

Heating your home Wood burning stoves

Most wood burning stoves are just that, wood burning! The first wood burning stove was patented in 1557 and we are still burning wood in them today. However as designs of stoves have evolved so have stove fuels, creating a need for multi-fuel stoves able to burn some (but not all) types of solid fuel such as smokeless coal. Modern wood-burners deliver a constant heat and can be used to heat a large room with ease

Open fires are typically only around 20% efficient and heat a relatively small area whereas the heat from a wood stove radiates over a much larger area. Open fires produce ten times more particulate matter than the new Eco stoves. This particulate matter is causing great concern about air quality in London and other major cities. Replacing your open fire ( or stove that is ten or more years old) with an EcoDesign ready stove will reduce your own particulate matter production by 90% thus you are doing your bit towards keeping the air clean and saving yourself some cash to boot as you will not burn anywhere near the same fuel volume.

Even more choice at Soft Furnishings by Mickie

2022 regulations

The Stove Industry Alliance is the main body providing publicity about the proposed new 2022 regulations, a Europe wide initiative to reduce emissions and to increase stove efficiency. There will be no requirement to change an old stove or open fire for a 2022 compliant model. To find out more pop in to see Geoff at Home Farm Stoves for expert advice they are situated at 8 High St, Long Buckby, Northampton NN6 7RD Phone: 01327 843400

Regulations introduced in 2014 require a minimum stove efficiency of 65%, this will change following the introduction of the EcoDesign regulations in 2022 when the minimum efficiency is being lifted on all new stoves to 75%. This applies to new stoves only so you will still be able to use your current stove until it wears out. An open fire is only around 20% efficient as most of the heat is lost up the chimney, thus a modern EcoDesign approved stove will produce around four times the amount of heat coming into your room from the same volume of fuel.

Designs that are as individual as your home

Home Farm Stoves sell a range of EcoDesign Stoves from companies such as Charnwood, Arada & Morso with 90% of their models approved. The new Charnwood Island 1 as featured in their advertisement in this issue, is 85% efficient, A+ energy rated and has emissions 40% lower than EcoDesign. It is likely that under EcoDesign some solid fuels such as house coal and high sulphur smokeless fuels will also be outlawed as their emissions are too dirty to conform to the clean air requirements irrespective of how they are burnt. Ultra efficient wood burners have air flows under and over the fire-bed and well as down the inside of the glass so that you always get a great view of the fire. Almost everything is burnt so ash deposits are minimal.

Q: What is the best thing to lay on uneven floorboards? A: Firstly, arrange a home visit with your carpet retailer who will be able to assess how bad the unevenness is. Depending on how bad the floorboards are there are a couple of options. Using a good quality underlay with a high density can help correct the unevenness before the installation of your new carpet. If the boards are particularly uneven it might be best to ply the floor first to create a new even surface in readiness for your new flooring, be it carpet, vinyl or a luxury vinyl tile. This process can also reduce creaks and squeaks caused by the uneven floor boards.

of British manufacturers use British wool from British farmers and even produce carpets that are undyed showcasing beautiful natural colours. Having said that, wool carpets come in all colours and also beautiful patterns. On a safety note, wool is fire retardant and does not melt. This is a great safety feature and also very useful when installed in rooms with open fires or log burners.

Q: What is the best solution to minimise noise in a room. A: To reduce noise in a room, or noise in the room below, use a good quality felt and crumb underlay which is made up of felted wool and recycled car tyres. This underlay reduces the vibration and so reduces noise. Felt underlay is also super warm, wears well and is very comfortable under foot.

Q: How do I choose the right carpet or flooring for my home? A: Ask your retailer for advice. They will take into account where the flooring is going to be installed, how many people live in the house, household pets and many other factors including budget.

A: Why are so many carpets advertised as stain resistant and bleach cleanable? Q: If the carpet is 100% polypropylene then you can use all carpet cleaning products including household bleach. Firstly, make sure your carpet is definitely 100% polypropylene and ask your retailer for cleaning and maintenance instructions. Using bleach will not affect the colour of your carpet if it is 100% polypropylene. Modern polypropylene fibres do not absorb moisture which makes them almost completely resistant to staining. Q: What are the benefits of a wool carpet? A: This list is almost endless. Wool is soft and warm and a natural insulator. It is very resilient and hard wearing and has many health benefits that are worth exploring. It is 100% sustainable and kind to the environment. Lots

Q: What is a felt backed carpet? A: When a felt backing is added to a carpet it means it can be laid directly to the floor which in certain situations can be very handy. The felt backing gives the carpet some support in the absence of an underlay.

Q: Is it worth taking flooring samples home? A: Definitely. Flooring viewed in store will often look different at home. The lighting and décor in your home will be different to that of the store and that can affect how the carpet or flooring will look once it’s been installed. Unless you are 100% sure, taking a sample home can help you be certain you have made the right choice before making a purchase. Q: I want a pink carpet but everything looks so grey? A: It is true, grey is the new beige and it is everywhere. Grey, or beige, is a really useful neutral colour that goes with just about everything. But what if you want a pink carpet. Worry not! There is still plenty of colour about. Visit your local carpet showroom and you will find plenty of pinks, blues, greens and everything in between in both polypropylene and wool carpets. There are even brightly coloured carpets, pink included, with silver sprinkles that will really give a room a bit of sparkle!

Why we need Red Tractor more than ever With Jim Moseley, CEO of the UK’s largest farm assurance scheme. It might seem like a lifetime ago, but for the vast majority of British farmers, the 1990’s was a torrid time. After a spate of food scares, trust in British Agriculture was at an all-time low. It devastated food businesses up and down the country and ruined the livelihoods of many farmers. At lot has changed in the proceeding decades, the food and drinks industry are now considered to be one of Britain’s flagship industries; it contributes more than £100 billion to the UK’s economy and employs more than 4 million people. The whole food industry has transformed beyond recognition, but no sector has evolved as much as British farming. We have seen a massive rise in consumer pride in British Agriculture, and farmers don’t need me to tell them how important that it is. Without the support of shoppers and diners choosing UK food and drink in shops and restaurants, we wouldn’t have stood a chance. Red Tractor has been an important element in our journey to rebuild consumer trust and has significantly helped to improve the overall standards of farming in the UK. Set up almost twenty years ago, Red Tractor was and continues to be the biggest industry-wide food and farming assurance scheme. It has some of the most comprehensive farming and food standards in the world; and is the only UK-wide scheme that offers full traceability of products from farm to pack, along with high animal welfare standards and environmental protection. In fact, earlier this year a global independent study found that the breadth and depth of the Red Tractor scheme across these areas was second to none.

Today the Red Tractor logo is on over £13 billion worth of food and drink and the scheme has over 46,000 members. It opens routes to market with some of farming’s largest customers, which is an opportunity that many farmers cannot afford to miss. Rightly membership of the scheme isn’t automatic, over 60,000 independent and robust inspections are conducted each year to ensure that high standards are met. With Brexit looming just around the corner, British Farming is once again at a crossroads. Farming has always been a challenge, but this autumn it is crucial that we all get out there to help ensure that consumers understand the importance of affordable food produced to high-quality standards. We need to ensure they aren’t duped into buying cheaper imports produced to lower standards, using practices which are unacceptable in the UK, but commonplace elsewhere. For example, chlorinated chicken which is used to make it safe for consumption, or the prevalent use of antibiotics in livestock, compared with the limited use required by the Red Tractor scheme. British farmers know they are the custodians of the UK countryside, and are proud of the high animal welfare and environmental standards they adhere to with Red Tractor. Importers of food and drink must be subject to the same rigorous standards. Now is not the time to sit back and hope for the best. Not all of our competitors around the world can match what we do, so it’s time to make sure we all understand the true value of Red Tractor, and how it is supporting and helping to lead the farming industry. www.redtractor.org.uk

Magic leaves It is a miracle and a wonder, when every Spring our spirits are lifted as trees and plants come into leaf – after months of stark skeletal outlines in winter, the most amazing leaf shapes emerge from rows of buds to delight our senses and fill our landscape with colour! Some of the common tree species growing today were around 65 million years ago, before human life evolved, and now we use leaves in cooking, in our cosmetics, to decorate our homes, and in some parts of the world, to make shelters and homes. Although familiar and important as these facts are, it is the unseen properties of leaves that is most important. Perhaps the most important unseen characteristic is their ability to build up energy, in the form of glucose, from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight; this is process is called photosynthesis. A by-product of this process is the release of oxygen. Trees convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and maintain the air we breathe!

But the really obvious and magical moment is in Autumn when those lush green leaves start to turn the most beautiful shades of red, orange and burgundy creating a stunning mosaic of colours. This yearly feast for the eyes never disappoints, as the days get shorter and the temperature falls and the trees begin to rest, the supply of chlorophyll dwindles and the other leaf pigments, known as carotenoids, shine through. Collecting beautiful windfallen leaves on a walk is irresistible; I love to get a closer look and marvel at the transient colours before the leaf dries out and fades. Of course, you can preserve that moment by pressing treasured leaves between the pages of a heavy book or perhaps you might collect some other seeds and nuts to make a pattern or a mandala. You might want to look at the incredible work of artist Andy Goldsworthy, who creates sculptures and works of art using only natural

ingredients, often leaves, twigs, berries, grasses or whatever the ‘place’ he chooses to work in, has to offer. We need to protect and appreciate our trees as they help mitigate the effects of climate change. We need more trees to shade our cities and towns, to bring shelter and beauty to places. Trees and woods offer great potential for rebuilding our relationship with nature, reinforcing local identity and sustaining wildlife. Recent popularity with ‘Forest Bathing’ – and ‘no’ it doesn’t mean wearing a swimming costume, donning a pair of running shoes or checking your Fitbit – it just means being in the presence of trees. This simple activity is proven to reduce heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress, boost the immune system by inhaling essential oils called phytoncides, and generally improve our overall feelings of wellbeing. ‘There has never been a more urgent time to articulate the benefits of the relationships between trees and people.’ (from: The Charter for Trees, Woods and People, Common Ground www.commonground.org.uk) Let’s get out there and enjoy kicking leaves and hugging trees!
