Well it’s been a good summer so far! Early in June we attended the Towcester Food Festival, which was a massive success and we met the very lovely William Sitwell who was nowhere near as scary as he is on Masterchef. The outcome of the event is that next year’s festival will be bigger and better and, once again, we will be media partners, producing the festival guide. In this issue we’ve also got some great ideas for things to amuse the whole family over the summer including summer clubs, festivals and places to visit. Don’t miss the Music Festival at The Admiral Nelson in Braunston or the Rugby Festival of Culture, plus lots of other great events right on your doorstep. We hope you have a great summer whether your staying at home or going away. Stay safe healthy but most of all have fun!

How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm - Mei-Ling Hopgood Parenting is a funny business. Everyone has an opinion on how to do things, from potty training to bedtimes - and that is only friends and family. Imagine how many different views on these everyday aspects of a child’s life exist across the world...

Hopgood’s style is a mixture of anecdote, example and research, meaning that the book is always readable and is educational in the best of ways - you find out an awful lot, and you don’t always realise how much you are learning. Not a bad way of thinking about teaching children, either...

The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon - Jonny Duddle

Jonny Duddle’s picture books have quickly become modern children’s classics, and this chapter book follows on from ‘The Pirates Next Door’, using Mei-Ling Hopgood’s fascinating book explores a range of ideas from across the globe, looking at how familiar characters but offering a longer and more detailed read for that awkward age when picture ‘normal’ practice in one culture may seem unusual, books are dismissed as ‘babyish’ but longer books are if not downright odd, in another. Hopgood writes still a little too challenging. from the parent’s perspective, and the book is part social history and part memoir as she tries to apply Duddle’s illustrations are carefully spaced, so that there different strategies with her own daughter. are no daunting pages of solid text: there is always at least one line drawing to pull us in. Your family

Ready for your close up Mum? Making your holiday video a fun summer project. So summer is here and I bet you are off on your holiday soon? There will be lots of things to do and see and I’m sure you will have a great time but wouldn’t it be brilliant to come home with a really good video of your fun in the sun? Making a video is a great family summer project. Who knows, perhaps you are the next big Hollywood director about to get your break? Here are some tips for you, and some suggestions for how Mum or Dad can help you with your big film.

1. Planning your video

Video is all about telling a story so try to think about what you will film. Do you want to show your journey? Would it be better to start with that first day at the beach? When you get home you will want to put all those bits of film together to make one big story so try to plan a beginning, a middle and an end so you know what to shoot. Mums and Dads – How about creating an itinerary of your trip so that you can make sure the kids know where and when to film.

2. On location

When you are filming as you are out and about you are ‘on location’. Remember to get film that tells the viewer where you are by using things like signs or landmarks and let the viewer know what is happening.

Mums and Dads – Perhaps you could suggest identifying landmarks and remind the kids to film them.

3. Presenting

One of the best ways to make a video of your journey is to do some presenting. Remember to say where you are by starting with something like “I am here at…” put this with tip number 2 and your viewer will always be up to speed. Mums and Dads – Writing the presenter dialogue can be a great boost to your children’s literacy skills. Why not help with a script?

4. Editing it all down

There are lots of free video editing software programs to use to put it all together when you get home…but don’t rush. Go back to that plan you made at the start and try to stick to it. Mums and Dads – Kids learn computer skills really quickly but often need a little help with bigger projects. Also, this will give you chance to edit out those embarrassing shots of you asleep on the beach. Finally…Remember to look after the equipment because a fun holiday is sometimes a messy holiday. How about using a zip lock bag or something water proof to put that camera in?

Happy film making! 10

Protecting Pets From The Sun Even in a ‘British Summer,’ the sun’s rays can be harmful to our pets as well as to ourselves. We’ve all become wiser about applying sunscreen and thinking about the effects of UV rays, but now we need to apply this to our pets too. Pets just like humans, can get sunburn if out in the sun for too long. In the longer term, exposure can trigger squamous cell carcinoma - a form of cancer. Most at risk are hairless varieties and white animals There are many products now available to help you protect your pet. These include sunscreens, special wipes, sunblock and soothing after-sun lotion. Always use products specifically designed for pets as human ones often contain salicylates, which may prove toxic. There is also a range of clothing products from hats and sun visors, through to sun suits like those made for children.

Flying Visitors As the warm sunny evenings extend and the days get longer, we often find ourselves outside, glass of wine in hand, enjoying those last rays of sunshine, or perhaps celebrating the summer with friends around a tasty BBQ. It’s on these occasions that we are most likely to notice our nocturnal wildlife. Bats are usually only with us for the summer as they do the sensible thing and hibernate over winter. So why not do our best to make their stay as amenable as possible. I’m sure you all know bats are insectivorous, feeding on nocturnal invertebrates such as moths, so the best way to encourage bats into our gardens is to plant a plethora of insect friendly plants. As moths, and other insects we find in our gardens, vary as the summer progresses we should aim to have plenty of nectar-bearing flowers out in as many months as possible especially early spring and late summer when bats are most in need of food either just after or just before hibernation. When looking for nectar rich plants it is generally the more old-fashioned varieties that are best suited

GBa&e

rather than the more flamboyant modern hybrids which we are often more inclined to plant. Some plants such as modern peonies and roses, which have double flowers, offer little or no nectar for hungry insects. So next time you take a trip to the garden centre please do consider plants such as Cuckooflower, Forget-me-not, Wallflower, Lavender, Mint, Honeysuckle and Buddleia, much loved by a range of nectar dependent insects! Try to keep the moths out of the wine though, it ruins the bouquet! Casey Griffin Assistant Ecologist, ECOLOCATION

No passport required – Staycations and Glamping The prospect of the villa, tapas and Sangria may be very tempting but how long has it been since you explored the gorgeous scenery and culture that brings millions of holidaymakers to our shores? We are incredibly lucky to have some of the country’s biggest tourist attractions within easy reach, such as the Cotswolds, Shakespeare’s Stratford and Warwick Castle, as well as stunning countryside, village pubs, the canal and historic houses. So, if you’re high on inspiration but low on funds, you could book some time off work and have a ‘Staycation’ – explore everything the local area has to offer without having to pay for accommodation! However, if you would prefer to get away (and escape the temptation to do some much-needed DIY, sort out the garden and inevitably run out of time to actually get out and about), there are plenty of amazing sights and sounds to explore without the need of a passport. As we’re located in the heart of England, there’s no reason why you can’t take in some of the UK’s best beaches, historic cities,

towns and villages, castles, cathedrals, abbeys and countryside, whether you only have a couple of days or a fortnight to spare. You could opt to stay in a hotel or guest house, but we love the idea of ‘Glamping’! Short for glamorous camping, it’s the perfect way to get back to nature without having to sacrifice your daily luxuries. Yurts, teepees, huts, lodges, canvas cottages, retro caravans, bell tents and gypsy caravans are dotted around some of the UK’s finest countryside, with a couple in Northamptonshire and Warwickshire for those of you who would prefer to stay closer to home. The only limit is your imagination (and bank balance as some of these unique options, unsurprisingly, come at a cost). What are you waiting for? Stop hunting for that passport and start searching for your perfect UK break!

Long Buckby Feast Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014 The Long Buckby Feast was revived after many years in 2007. Run by volunteers, it aims to raise money for charity and to bring life to the village of Long Buckby by staging events on and around the August Bank Holiday. The history of the Long Buckby Feast dates back to the early middle ages: in 1280 the village was granted a Charter for a Market and two Fairs or Feasts, one in May and one on St Lawrence’s day (August 10th). Buckby Feast Day is celebrated in the Market Place which is decked with bunting, filled with stalls and thronged with people – in the first year more than 1,500 people turned up and numbers have continued to grow every year. The Feast traditionally starts with a short service before the festivities get going. There follows music and dancing amongst fairground attractions including Punch and Judy, bouncy castles, displays, games, stalls and competitions. Food and drinks are available at the Feast ie, Barbeque, Pig Roast and Pimms tent. As well as the local pub and restaurants on the Market Place we also have tea, coffee, soft drinks and cakes available at the Baptist church.

The Feast raised more than £5,000 in its first year, which lead to the formation of a charity called The Buckby Feast Trust. In 2013 last year, the Feast had it’s most successful year in which it raised over £10,000 during Feast week, all of which will be distributed by the Trust to support local causes. Every year we hold a Feas Pudn competition. No, this is not a typo – we have reverted to old “Buckby” language for Feast Pudding. It is a local recipe which used to be made by villagers with ingredients found in houses or specially bought for Buckby Feast. People returned home for the celebrations and ate as much Pudn as was offered when visiting friends & relations! This year the Feas pudn competition will be judged on feast day itself and gowned judges with the winning pudns will be handing out slices of pudn to everyone !! Pick up your Feas pudn recipe from Buckby Newsagents or The Peephole. Go on, try a bit of Feas Pudn, you know you want to!

Does it matter how I look? If you’re happy with how you look, then the answer is no because you’re already content with yourself and appearance. But for the majority of women who are not happy with how they appear, then yes, how you look matters simply because it affects how we feel about ourselves at a deeper level. A woman who feels accepting of her appearance feels empowered. She feels confident. She has a natural glow and radiance and because she accepts herself, she naturally draws accepting people and situations towards her. This is often referred to as having ‘allure’ and ‘charisma’, two very important traits which help get you noticed in a highly positive and successful sense. It has nothing to do with weight, shape or beauty. It has everything to do with inner confidence and how we feel about ourselves. For most women, our confidence is directly linked to our appearance so how we look is important to us. We know that the image we present to the world means we are often judged based on how we look. People form opinions about us even before we have opened our mouths to speak and because of this, we feel the pressure on us to comply, not with our own expectation but with the expectation of others. Without doubt, it’s a pressure most women struggle with at some point in their lives especially if they are juggling several different time consuming roles ie motherhood, career, looking after the home, being a carer, etc. It’s impossible to wake up looking absolutely perfectly flawless and ready for the day. Not one single woman can achieve this without some help.

How you create your own personal image depends on your lifestyle and/or what you do for a job. If you’re in a profession where you need to be taken seriously, the clothing you wear and how you present yourself will send either very direct or very subtle messages to those with whom you work so your dress code needs to reflect the role you perform in your job. If you’re seeking promotion, your image needs careful polishing because it represents your manner, personality, credibility, performance, reliability, and effectiveness. Yes, people watch you, observe and judge you based on how you look. If you make a minimal effort, it can translate into how people view your attitude. If you take care and present yourself well, people judge you on your attention to detail and the care you take overall. Each person’s image is different and can be as individual as you are but it’s important to remember if you’re hoping to make an impression for success that your clothes and image need to project the whole person and their capabilities, especially at work, if you’re hoping to get a job, win a contract, get a loan to start a business or gain promotion. Out & about

Out and About in Long Buckby If you were to mention Long Buckby to anyone other than a resident, one of the first things mentioned would probably be the train station, which every morning and evening becomes packed to the rafters with commuters making their way to Rugby, Coventry, Milton Keynes, London and everywhere inbetween. But if you just carry on a little way further up the road, you will discover a thriving, bustling village that offers a wide range of amenities and services to both residents and visitors alike. Long Buckby, a village probably at least 1000 years old. The name is of Scandinavian origin, the ‘by’ meant farmstead and the first part comes from a personal name such as ‘Bucca’. By the time of the Domesday Book (1086 A.D.) the manor of ‘Buchebi’ had been given to Norman nobles and in the mid 12th century one of these, Sahir de Quincy, built a castle here. The castle mound has survived and is signposted off Station Road.. It has a fascinating history through the ages which can be found on www.longbuckby.net bringing you right up to date with is recent developments. With an ever growing population, it is village which offers residents and visitors alike a wide and varied selection of clubs, both social and sport, shops, restaurants and pubs and health services for the wider local community. The locals are passionate about their village and are keen to welcome visitors and not just pass through. We spoke to a some local business owners, and got their comments on Why Long Buckby?

42

“I have lived here for more than forty years. It has a friendly, community feel and all the amenities, shops, businesses and clubs you could want. ” – Roger Cleaver, Rogers the Butchers “A few months ago we made the decision to relocate to Long Buckby. Our decision was excellent. Long Buckby is a friendly, aspiring , diverse village bordering three counties and several large towns as well as surrounding villages”. Nina Wornham – Nina Wornham Fashion Studio “Long Buckby Dental is a village dentist that is familycentric and customer orientated. We ensure every patient has a personal treatment plan and the focus is on prevention rather than cure.” - Roger Bentley – Long Buckby Dental Practice. I’ve been in the shop for two years.. I honestly believe that owning a shop in a village is completely different to a town location, because I am able to really get to know my customers.” Cathy Down of Useful Things The village itself has everything I need. I can do my banking, get my hair cut, buy the basics, treat the wife and eat out, all in Long Buckby.” Geoff Seymour of Home Farm Stoves Long Buckby has everything needed to sustain life, just on a smaller scale. The shopping experience in Long Buckby is full of choice, with the added bonus of free parking in the square. The local market held in the community centre on Thursdays from 9am until 11am is also well worth a visit.

Ransfords – Conserving Britain’s heritage Quality products

Architectural Salvage has been around for some time now, as people recognise the superior quality of the fixtures and fittings that belonged to properties of the past. In the modern world of mass production, it can be almost impossible to find doors of the right size and style to suit an older property. Other fittings such as fireplaces, lighting and door furniture are equally as hard to source. The quality and individuality that was once commonplace is often lacking in the modern equivalents. This, together with the realisation that original features can enhance and also be an investment in the value of a property, has created a vibrant market in architectural salvage.

Reducing waste

An interesting development, which has potential to considerably improve waste minimisation, is that some architectural salvage companies have become demolition experts or have linked up with demolition companies. This helps stop the

still regular situation of demolition companies destroying many valuable items and materials, and sending them on to landfill sites that scar the country landscape. It also considerably reduces waste; and produces an increase in the resources available for renovation and rebuild, including many rare, beautiful and valuable materials, from bricks and timber to exterior and interior fittings.

Conserving our past

Ransfords in Daventry carry large stocks of these reclaimed building materials from the demolition of redundant buildings. The salvaged material is cleaned and stored at the depot where it waits for a new lease of life on a renovation project. All of these reclaimed building materials are used in conserving Britains Heritage.

Whole Roasted Sea Bass with Fennel and Lemongrass

Shopping list Serves 2 2 x 400g sea bass, gutted and fins trimmed 1 bulb of fennel 3 lemongrass quills Olive oil Sea salt White pepper Foil Baking parchment Coriander Method Take the fennel and remove the core by quartering and removing the core from each piece. Shred the fennel as fine as you can into a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and add a glug or two of olive oil.

Prepare the lemongrass by removing the harder outside layer and end, then shred down very fine and add to the fennel. Use the filling to pack the fish’s cavity then slash the sides of the fish a couple of times to allow the steam out. Oil the fish, wrap first in parchment and then foil. Bake or BBQ the fish until hot all the way through, 20minutes should do it. To check, use a probe (75ºC) or metal skewer - put on your bottom lip to check the temperature, if it feels hot it is done. You can use this technique for lots of barbequed foods like chicken, marinated meats and vegetables. Serve with salad or char grilled vegetables and a light crisp Muscadet Sur Lie or Sauvignon Blanc. Enjoy the summer..

Cloudy2Clear – A Simple Way To Save Money Cloudy2Clear Windows, the Northampton based window repair company, are revolutionising how homeowners view double glazing in our area. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as customers take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore is more than happy to explain the process. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. I find people are amazed at just

how simple the process is and the speed with which we can replace the glass. This isn’t like when you have new frames put in with people levering out the old ones with loads of mess. We can pop the old glass out and deliver, effectively, a brand new window within a matter of minutes. At the end of the day most frames, even timber ones, will last forever. It’s very rare we come across a window that needs a full replacement and that means the customer gets, effectively, a new window at a fraction of the cost.’

www.cloudy2clear.co.uk. For example, he recently completed an installation at Mr Miners house in Northampton. Here’s what he had to say. ‘I have to say that I thought the service Cloudy2Clear offer compared to having completely new windows absolutely incredible value. The service was reliable, simple and without complication.

The windows look absolutely brilliant and installation was incredibly quick. Thank you!’ High praise indeed! So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be more than happy to help!

Trevor is rightly proud too of comments he receives back from satisfied customers, a selection of which he has put on his website

Walking back to happiness Health experts recommend that we get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week. To achieve this, look no further than something you’ve been doing since you were a toddler - walking! Walking has been described as “the nearest activity to perfect exercise” and offers a host of health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke. In addition, walking conditions all the muscles of the lower body, particularly those in the bottom and thighs, and US psychologists also claim that regularly spending time outdoors can help stave off anxiety and depression. Walking can, quite literally, be done anywhere but if tramping the streets or countryside alone is not your idea of fun, why not join a walking group near you? They are a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people in a sociable and safe environment. The Ramblers is Britain’s walking charity, with around 500 groups throughout the British Isles. Most groups are organised geographically, but there are some that specialise in shorter, easier, or family-friendly walks, and others that cater for specific age groups - for example people in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Walks are run weekly and are generally led by a trained leader. The cost of annual membership is £32 or £3 per month.

The British Walking Federation organises walking events for people of all ages and abilities, to encourage personal fitness through regular noncompetitive exercise. To participate, simply turn up and register on the day. A list of events can be found on their website www.bwf-ivv.org.uk along with a list of walking groups around the country. The British Walking Federation offers individual membership at £8 per year, which entitles members to a calendar of events, newsletters and discounts on entry fees to permanent BWF trails. If you like walking but fancy something a little different, why not give Nordic Walking a try? Originally designed to help cross-country skiers train during the summer months, this method of walking is suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels, and involves the use of specially designed poles to give you a full body work out that tones the arms, legs, stomach, chest and back, in addition to the legs. Using the poles puts less pressure on the joints as the work is shared between different parts of the body. The only equipment needed to start Nordic Walking is a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothing. Poles are provided within the class fee price of £5-£6 for around an hour. For more information visit www.nordicwalking.co.uk.

This unique and exotic treatment combines the detoxifying and cleansing capabilities plus the intensely moisturising power of natural oils. Travelling With Kids Keep family holidays a trouble-free, happy experience by following these tips! Keep Entertained

Pack plenty for kids to do during long, tedious journeys. A device loaded with apps is nice and compact, but also consider hand held puzzles, colouring books, plasticine, puppets, stickers, reading books and cards.

Keep Safe

wipes to clean restaurant tables, cutlery and toilet seats and hand sanitiser for when there are no washing facilities nearby. A basic first aid kit is also a must! Pack pain killers or an easy to swallow medicine like Calpol, along with antiseptic wipes, plasters, anti-histamines and a thermometer.

Use a child locator if you are visiting busy airports or crowded tourist attractions. Your child wears a small unit strapped to a belt or shoe and you keep the transmitter. If you lose your child, set off the alarm and follow the sound to find them. For older kids, write your mobile phone number on their arm.

Keep Memories

Keep Healthy

Happy Holidays!

Give smaller children a robust, child-friendly camera to record what’s important and interesting to them, and encourage older kids to keep a travel journal on postcards by writing messages to themselves - they make great memories for adulthood!

Young children often get ill on holiday. Keep bugs at bay by having a supply of antibacterial
