DO YOU WANT TO ... FEEL BETTER? HAVE MORE ENERGY? SLEEP BETTER? FEEL YOUNGER? COME AND TRY BEMER PHYSICAL VASCULAR THERAPY ** FOR FREE **

INCREASE CIRCULATION - SPORTS INJURY SLEEP MANAGEMENT - INCREASE ENERGY BETTER DIGESTION - JOINT & MUSCLE PAIN 11 ST JOHNS SQUARE DAVENTRY NN11 4FG

Health Pod clients have had relief from back problems, shoulder and tennis elbow complaints, neck stiffness, arthritis in hands, aching/tingly feet, achilles tendon injury, aching knee/sports injury, muscles strains etc. It also helps many clients with improved energy levels, mental focus, better sleep, digestive concerns and more. Many Pro Athletes use this therapy to improve stamina and performance while also helping with rest, repair and recovery after work outs.

What do clients say about The Health Pod? I was diagnosed with Peripheral Vascular disease in my left leg in Aug 18. On 25th October 2018 I had a follow up Vascular Doppler test and my Consultant Vascular Surgeon told me that I no longer had any blockages or narrowing of the blood vessels and I’m now discharged from the hospital. I am very happy and relieved that my BEMER sessions have had such an effect in such a short time. I will continue with the sessions to assist my overall general health, fitness and energy. Terry, Daventry At the end of the second week I stopped taking prescription painkillers completely, and still now 5

weeks later, I have taken none. After the intensive month I would highly recommend BEMER. Steve and Carla are extremely professional, educated and friendly. I have been able to use this therapy as a big step up in my recovery, and I am truly thankful for that. I came to BEMER to take away my back ache, and ended up with something much much better. It took away my need for prescription pain killers. Scott, Daventry I had a lot of stress over the last three and half years and in August 2018 I had a heart attack. I still had sensations in my chest and the doctor said it could be anxiety or

angina and said to use my nitro spray if required. I clearly was sceptical about trying Bemer - would it effect my heart? Would it give me a bigger problem? I decided to give it a go. My first 8 minutes, I was aware of a slight tingling in my lower back into my buttock. I have now had many sessions since January 2019 and I can honestly say that I don’t give my heart a second thought. I will continue to have sessions because my body and mind are doing well. I would recommend Bemer Vascular Therapy because it’s like having an insurance policy that is paying you a dividend every day. Rob, Daventry

Sweet feet for the summer Tip-top condition We’ve kept them hidden in shoes and boots all winter, but when summer comes it’s good to put on a pair of sandals or flip flops, or perhaps even walk around with bare feet. So, how can we make sure our feet are in tiptop condition and feel confident about showing them off to all around us? If you have a lot of rough and hard skin, foot conditions such as athletes foot, fungal nail infection, an ingrowing toe nail, calluses, corns or verrucas, a session or a number of appointments with a chiropodist or podiatrist is recommended. The terms are interchangeable, but strictly in the UK, ‘Podiatrist’ is a reserved title meaning that it can only be used by those registered with the Health Professions Council. Inside the profession, chiropody is used to suggest the routine processes of foot care, whilst podiatry is indicative of the higher skills and academic levels.

Regular maintenance tasks Cutting your toe nails short. The use of clippers is generally recommended. Nails should be no more than a couple of millimetres over the edge of your toe.

It’s good to soak your feet in a bowl of warm water and use a foot scrub or lotion to get them clean and feeling smooth and silky. Various tools and devices are available to help you file hard and crusty skin to make it smooth. At home and at a beautician’s this is likely to be a pumice based product. A chiropodist is more likely to use a blade. Apply moisturising cream daily and massage it in well, including between the toes. Let it dry before putting on socks or tights, as persisting dampness can cause fungus or athletes foot. Once a week, gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick to keep your toes healthy. If you want to beautify too, you can apply polish to your toe nails. Some polishes have nourishing qualities. Make sure you remove traces of any previous polish with an appropriate remover. Ongoing measures for foot health include putting your feet up after shopping sprees or long walks, and making sure shoes fit properly to prevent blisters or crushing of toes. Our feet keep us going so look after them !!

Next, file your nails using an emery board. File them so they are smooth, neat and square.

Daily Bread and Workbridge café & garden centre Fair price - Fair products

Daily Bread offer Fairtrade and Organic products which are 100% vegetarian with most being vegan as well. We also offer a large range of gluten-free products. We also are committed to stocking as much organic and local produce as we can, as well as offering a really wide range of gluten free and vegan products. All of our produce is suitable for vegetarians.

Environmental plan

Daily Bread have an Environmental plan which highlights plans regarding plastic use. Daily Bread think they can credit Sir David Attenborough (at least partly) with starting something that will change the way their co-operative works for many years to come, and they hope that, as with endeavours in the past like organic foods and fairly traded products, they will be counted among the first to bring to the business world a ground breaking change that will better our whole industry. Daily Bread have looked at drastically overhauling their packaging, and are carefully investigating new, more biodegradable packaging options. It is their hope that one day the items they pack, as well as what they sell pre-packed from other companies, will have for more sustainable and eco-friendly packaging, and that the waste they as a company produce will be reduced to a fraction of what it is today. Very recently they have made a big step in this area having discovered a material called Natureflex, which is similar to the plastic bags they use in that it is flexible and transparent, but which is actually made from wood pulp and is completely biodegradable. They now do refills of many cleaning products in the shop.

Self-seeders! I’m constantly looking at and photographing flora and fauna and watching closely how things change with the seasons. Constant observation of plants, colours and textures, which grow well together along the hedgerows and fields, is what inspires my designs as a florist and a gardener. I walk along the Ashlawn Cutting most days with my dog, and last July, when everywhere was scorched to a crisp and prematurely dried and gone to seed, standing tall behind the dried grasses were beautiful pink spires of Rose-Bay Willow-Herb. That day, I was seeking ideas for a ‘meadow’ style entrance arrangement to a marquee for a wedding. As you know I love to forage, so I couldn’t resist an armful of grasses and some stems of rose-bay willow-herb to take home to experiment with…. Pleased with my selection I headed home for a spot of ‘flowering’ in the garden. Delighted with the mock-up, I duly photographed, sketched and made some notes of preferable garden flowers I could substitute to make the whole thing look more suitable for a wedding. Just then I noticed a welcome cooling breeze (it was a boiling hot day!) which created a beautiful movement to my arrangement, but horror of horrors it was also gently wafting wild grass and flower seeds across my garden!!! I needed to remove the arrangement pretty quickly and keeping it all together was going to be the best way of efficient ‘seed dispersal limitation’. Suffice to say it required 2 people, a king size sheet, lots of pegs and a green wheelie bin strategically positioned!! Despite its beauty as a striking wild plant, the common rose-bay willow-herb or fireweed is often referred to as a pioneer plant – one of the first plants to colonise a barren area, particularly after a fire has burnt the ground.

12

During the Second World War and the following years the spires of magenta flowers were commonplace amidst the ruins and cleared bombsites; hence the name it was given at the time – bombweed. Fireweed or bombweed flourished amid the rubble and ashes attracting birds and insects back into these decimated areas. Apparently the seeds can lay dormant for years until the soil is agitated…so I guess I’ll have to wait a few more years to see if my garden becomes colonised by this beautiful but unwelcome garden visitor… The Rose-Bay Willow-Herb Fairy On the breeze my fluff is blown; So my airy seeds are sewn. Where the earth is burnt and sad, I will come to make it glad. All forlorn and ruined places, All neglected empty spaces, I can cover – only think! With a mass of rosy pink. Burst then, seed-pods; breezes, blow! Far and wide my seeds will go! Garden toys for summer fun Fun at home You don’t always need to leave home to have some summer fun with the children. If you invest in some great garden toys you can keep them busy for hours, and ensure they get some fresh air and exercise. Traditional toys such as swings and slides remain popular. There are many different sizes and styles available, so do make sure that you pick carefully to match the age of the children that will be playing on them, and to ensure they are robust enough.

On the beach? Give them a sense of the beach by buying a sandpit. Designs vary from simple circle shaped pits, to shaped items like shells, right through to luxury wooden models, with seats and built-in sunshade. It can be useful to have one with a lid to protect the sand from wet weather (and curious cats!!). You can buy special play-sand to ensure it is clean, safe and non-toxic, and ideal for making sand castles with. Or perhaps you might prefer a play table that incorporates a sand area and water play?

from very cheap, simple single ring designs, to those with multiple rings, rigid sides, and even incorporate slides and other activities. Ease of inflation is an important consideration when you have excited children waiting to play. Other toys that can help kids have fun with water in the garden include sprinklers, and of course water pistols, or as they are more commonly known these days ‘Supersoakers’. An empty sand pit or paddling pool can also double up as a ball pool.

Equipment ideas If you only have a small garden or limited budget, do not despair, there are still many choices. How about a boules or skittle set, skipping rope, slingshot, hoola hoop, some blowing bubbles or a small play tunnel? If you’ve not room for ball games requiring lots of space try something like swingball. Or you could let the little ones do some garden role play by buying some play ‘mini garden tools’ Whatever you buy, always check age guidelines and look for quality marks.

Lots of fun can be had in a paddling pool. They can range

Advertorial

Fill those gaps & help save the planet Yuseal was formed 5 years ago to develop an alternative to silicone that was easy to fit, maintain and to be environmentally friendlier than silicone. We have 2 products, one is the upstand solution for fitting to the upstand at the back of a worktop, the other product is multiseal, which as the name suggests has multiple uses, is antimicrobial, can be fitted around worktops, baths, showers, windows, doors and floors. Multiseal comes in 2 sizes and 3 colours, white, clear and black. One of the main advantages is the prevention of waste going to landfill which we all know is a major problem at present, millions of used and part used silicone tubes and associated waste go to landfill every year. Hundreds of lorry trips are avoided.

Multiseal can replace silicone around baths, showers, windows, kitchens and floors.

Multiseal is easy to fit

 Multiseal is long lasting  Multiseal is antimicrobial  Multiseal is easy to clean  No more tubes of silicone to landfill Visit our website for more information www.yuseal.com

Wedding on ‘the cut’ Newlyweds Heather and Ben opted for a more unusual way of heading to their wedding reception after falling in love with the canals when they hired ‘Malvern’ from Union Canal Carriers for their first ever holiday together.

Canal based wedding

They fell in love with ‘the cut’ from the moment they first arrived at Union Canal Carriers. It’s a holiday that ensures you step away from the ever accelerating treadmill and pressures of modern life – the peace and quiet, the countryside and wildlife, even towns and cities are different via the canal. They were thrilled with the way Union Canal Carriers were so open to the idea of using the day boat for their wedding day and helped them turn it into reality, also suggesting Heather and Ben look into having the ceremony at St Peter’s Church at Wolfhampcote.

Guests

35 close family and friends attended and fully embraced the idea. Some of the female guests were concerned about footwear given that they had to walk along the canal side, up a bank and over a stile to get to the church! Heather and Ben came up with the idea of designing little drawstring bags in which their guests could carry their ‘dancing shoes’ for the evening. The words ‘for the road not taken’ were stencilled on the bags in homage to a favourite poem which seemed apt for the journey they have been on and which lead them to each other.

Vintage wedding dress

Reception

The Boat Inn at Stockton hosted the reception. Sue and Matt at the Boat Inn were incredible. They decorated the tables and the barn to perfection and made them a gorgeous cake of cheese for the reception, the food was fantastic.

Slow pace and chance to talk

The best thing about a canal based wedding is that everyone slows down… guests really get the opportunity to engage with each other – whether on the boats, walking the towpath or working the locks. Their guests loved the novelty of it all! They also got an insight into the unique heritage of the canals.

Honeymoon

Heather and Ben did the very popular Warwickshire Ring taking in 90 + locks in total having a great week with lovely weather! They went back to Braunston and up the North Oxford to Sutton Stop, then the Coventry Canal to Tamworth, Fazeley down into and through Birmingham and then Grand Union back down the Hatton Flight to Braunston.

Next trip

Heathers parents got married in August 1953 so her dress was 66 years old when she wore it. Heathers mum passed away in 1997 and wearing the dress felt like a very special way to feel her presence on the day. Heathers mum would have been amazed that the dress would be worn again and that it would get to have a trip on a canal boat!

The newlyweds have now booked their next holiday on the newest hire boat from UCC – Purbeck which has a permanently made bed, a roomy bathroom/shower and easy chairs which are perfect for sitting and enjoying a G&T and a read at the end of the day. Red Tractor sets its sights on the future A strengthened farm inspection regime and £1.5m advertising campaign are vital to securing the continued loyalty of shoppers as we move towards Brexit, says food assurance chief. It has been nearly two decades since the Red Tractor farm assurance scheme was established. Created in 2000 to reassure consumers that food was safe and responsibly produced, it now inspects more than 46,000 farm business and some of the largest food processors in the UK. More than £14bn of food & drink is now Red Tractor assured, providing consumers with a guarantee that it is British, traceable, safe and farmed with care.

The first pillar is a risk-based approach to farm inspections, focused on those members who require more support in achieving the standards 365 days a year and those that present a risk to the integrity of Red Tractor. New ‘Modular Standards’ were also announced as part of the plan to expand the breadth of the Red Tractor offer. Today, Red Tractor has a robust set of core standards that ensures that food is responsibly produced and affordable but we recognise that some consumers demand more, for example, organically produced, animal welfare focused or environmentally enhanced.

Since its creation in 2000 and through the continual development of its standards, Red Tractor has brought British farmers on a journey, such that today we can claim that Britain has some of the highest standards in the world. The scheme has evolved using science and evidence and is now presented with challenges and opportunities presented by leaving the European Union.

Red Tractor says that it aims to offer that broader choice. The move should also enable Red Tractor to simplify labelling, enabling consumers to make a more informed choice. The final piece of the puzzle is the most exciting and tangible for British farmers; a £1.5m advertising campaign designed to educate shoppers about the benefits that sit behind the logo.

The challenge is what role it can play in a market which could potentially be flooded with cheap food produced to lower standards, undermining the hard work done by the UK’s agriculture industry. The opportunity is that there is no better time to reinforce what the logo stands for and why consumers should trust the tractor.

The campaign broke last autumn on mainstream TV in programmes like Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. It was created by Mackinnon & Saunders, the artists who brought you, among other things, the Fantastic Mr Fox. It was repeated this spring and will be again later in the year.

Preparing for change As part of its evolution, last autumn Chief Executive Jim Moseley set out a three-pillar plan to establish Red Tractor as the flagship of British food & farming.

This is a great opportunity to showcase the high standards that British farmers and growers produce to under the Red Tractor scheme. www.redtractor.org.uk

Shop, eat and explore nature at Rushden Lakes If you were discussing some of the most spectacular landscapes across, `England`s green and pleasant land`, Northamptonshire would probably not be one of the first places mentioned but as someone who has lived, worked and walked across much of the county for the last forty years, I would say it is one of the nation`s `real gems`. Several years ago I walked The Nene Way, a long distance path following the course of the River Nene, from Northampton, then on to Thrapston and Oundle. The river Nene meandered its way through beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, stunning wetland landscapes, picturesque country villages with charming church spires and areas of thriving wildlife habitats. The Nene Wetlands around Rushden had for many years seen a number of industrial and leisure activities take place including iron ore mining, gravel quarrying, brick manufacture, water skiing and it also had a very successful dry ski slope, for many years. After these ventures became uneconomical or exhausted of their mineral assets, the area reverted back to nature with a string of small lakes and ponds straddling the river Nene like a necklace and seven small wetland nature reserves were established. Today the area has witnessed a pioneering project, the first in the country with the partnership of a Nature

40

Reserve and Retail Shopping development with several big brand fashion names at the gateway to a 41,000 acre Nature Reserve on their doorsteps. What is so unusual and pioneering about this development is that several retail giants are working alongside Wildlife Trusts to create a totally new shopping experience with nature at its heart. You really wouldn’t know you were next to a large retail shopping development as you stand on the boardwalk looking out over the water. In Summer migrant breeding birds include Sedge, Reed and Cetti`s Warblers. Dragonflies and Damselflies can be seen skimming over paths and water all summer long. Butterflies such as common blues, small coppers and Marbled whites are a real delight to spot. In Winter over 20,000 birds, including Bittern, Lapwings, Gadwalls, Wigeons, Pochards, Tufted Ducks and Great Crested Grebes, find a home amongst the wetlands and other habitats range from wildflower meadows, ancient woodlands and flooded gravel pits. The Nene Wetlands is a unique square mile of habitats, managed for both wildlife and people! I went for a short twenty minute walk around the `Nature Loop Walk ` skirting Skew Bridge Lake and as delighted to come across a series of fourteen wooden sculptures

Please mention The Village Emporium when responding to adverts

The Travel Locker‌. Local to you

highlighting the wildlife to be found in the reserve and a nod to its industrial history. The sculptures are made of good strong wood and are very tactile, the children I saw were keen to explore them, sitting on or climbing over many of the sculptures, much to their delight. I would love to have walked more of the wetlands but `retail therapy` and lunch was also part of the day, so I headed back across the Boardwalk to find refreshment at M&S, which I must say was very well prepared and reasonably priced. From my table I could look out over the water of `First lake`. Delightful! I am not much of a shopper but I did spend a short time in the comfortable retail surroundings and managed to secure a new pair of shoes and trousers at very competitive prices. I will return to Rushden Lakes to explore the 2.5 hours `Travellers Trail` which guides walkers as Higham Ferrers. Looking at the map there are seventeen different named lakes including Higham Lake, Dragonfly Lake and Heron Lake hugging the fringes of the River Nene. Rushden Lakes Shopping Centre really does offer the Nature lover and Shopper the best of both worlds.

Sale smart

Forward thinking If you know what’s happening next or have an idea you’ll know certain prints and colours will seamlessly (sorry not sorry pun intended) roll into next season.

grateful you had a method in your madness when you can appreciate it.

Less dash more cash

I’m talking leopard print again. Yes really! More leopard! So as long as fabrics are reasonably transient, buy into the print in the sale and use now and later. This goes for colours too – spice and golden yellow hues for example.

If you want to rummage and seriously rummage give yourself decent time. Don’t try and find a bargain quick time. Decipher and comb through the offerings in a busy retail space with time on your side. When you make your selection and reap the benefits of the savings.

Favourite brands

Try before you buy

If you particularly love a certain designer then what better than to buy that label for less!

Do try before you buy. A good reason for this is because the retailers returns policy may not be so flexible on sale items. The other thing is it’s a faff when you have go return!

You can multi-purchase that brand or feel rather pleased and virtuous of the saving you’ve made.

Price drops If you see drastic price cuts and you like what you see plus it fits (very important) then go for it! Sales are pretty short lived retail phases, soon enough the stores will soon fill with new with full ticket prices.

Out of season On the odd occasion, you might double take and see something from a previous season. Seeing a heavy blazer or fluffy knit in a summer sale is weird but if it’s a potential good piece to own then don’t be in the moment. You won’t wear said garment at the time of purchase but you’ll be

46

Happy shopping Enjoy your “me time” shopping. It’s fun after all! Get those bargains that are waiting for you. Make good choices! I hope that gave a helpful snippet of advice. My next written piece will be about the next seasonal offerings in the fashion sphere . Enjoy the Summer! Until next time. Anna xx

Best foot forward

Best foot forward - Norton Junction Northamptonshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes from the rolling hills in the north, to the scenic vistas and amazing woodlands in the south. If you add the Grand Union Canal with its many towpaths, quaint little villages that are secreted in history it is no wonder that they call this county the “Hidden Cotswolds”. NORTON JUNCTION – BALLOON WALK Distance: Approx 4.2 miles Dog friendly. Difficulty: Moderate Norton is a quaint picturesque village with a population of about 400, set in beautiful countryside in the middle of Northamptonshire. This walk is just over 4 miles and incorporates a lovely walk along the Grand Union Canal. Spot the cute houses at Norton Junction and enjoy the sights of the open fields and Weltonfield Marina. We challenge you to spot the classic car collection! It has not been proven, but apparently Norton was the birthplace of patron saint of Ireland, St Patrick! Google “Norton, St Patrick” and you will see the proof for yourself (if you believe everything you read on the internet). History fact: Norton has an entry in the Domesday Book, but the Parish has been occupied as far back as 2000 BC by the “Beaker People”. THE ROUTE: You can find step by step photo instructions, along with a detailed map of this route on www.adventuregeek.co.uk/ ag01

48

With All Saints Church behind you, turn right down the main road. Cross the road and head down the lane on your left. You will now walk about 1.2 miles along the quiet county road, and skipping over the cattle grids before you reach the main road. Take care crossing over and follow to the bridge that takes you onto the canal. Remember to check out the views behind you, it is rather amazing! Did you know? In 1993, the 145 mile unbroken Grand Union Canal walk opened between Little Venice in London and Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, and incorporated Norton Junction. Turning right onto the towpath continue until you reach the pretty brick bridge. Take the steps to the right of the bridge and cross to the other side of the canal. Whilst you are there, check out the cute house at Norton Junction. If you have kids, then they may be interested in finding the geocache which is hidden nearby. Cross the 2nd bridge then take a left turn which leads you to Weltonfield Marina. This particular footpath is very peaceful in any season, so take a moment to enjoy your surroundings. At Weltonfield Marina you will exit at bridge and then follow the footpath signs. Don’t worry, it may feel that you are going through someone’s garden, but rest assured this is a public footpath (just ignore the washing line!). (photos on the main map to show the route). As you pass the barns then check out the classic car collection! Some of my Adventure Geekers were rather impressed, although all I could see was lots of old rusty

PHOTO CHALLENGE!

Following the map, you will now walk in the direction of the footpath signs which will lead you around the outskirts of two fields, and then you will emerge onto the quiet country road.

Your photo challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to take a photo that includes a reflection. For each Adventure Geek walk we will challenge you to take a photo and upload to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #AGPhotoChallenge

The rest of the walk is nice and easy. Turn left and simply follow the road, wave to the cows and sheep in the field and take care again crossing the busy Long Buckby road. De ja vu? Yes, you are correct. You will complete your walk into Norton with a steep and long incline which is good for the heart rate! As you exit the country road, turn right and you will be back at the church in no time. We hope you had a lovely walk. Take time to visit All Saints Church, and also the White Horse Pub. If you get a chance then I would recommend to try the awesome fish and chips that is located next to the pub. (Note, it is closed on a Monday).

Check out our latest guided walks: https://adventuregeek.co.uk/events Adventure is a way of life. With my trusty backpack (Nellie) and my comfy walking boots, life is a dream. Go take a hike! @juliadohertygu

The Buckby Feast Feast History 1280 - 2019

2019 Line up of events

The Long Buckby Feast was revived in 2007. The aim is to raise money for Long Buckby charities from organised events which take place around the August bank holiday.

Produce & Craft Show, Saturday 17th August All classes open to all residents of Northamptonshire; Certificates for 1st and 2nd prizes and medals for the best in each class. The show is open to the general public in the afternoon followed by the grand auction at 4.15pm Long Buckby Museum which is based within The Community Centre will also be open from 2-4pm

The history of the Long Buckby Feast dates back to the early middle ages: in 1280 the village was granted a Charter for a Market and two Fairs or Feasts, one in May and one on St Lawrence’s day (August 10th). Buckby Feast Day was traditionally celebrated in the market place by local residents who would dress the market place with bunting and host a variety of stalls. In 2007 when the feast was revived over 1,500 people attended and numbers have continued to increase every year. In 2016 the feast was moved to the sports field where there is more space. In 2007 The Feast raised over 5k, which lead to the formation of a charity, called The Buckby Feast Trust. Since 2008, Buckby Feast has expanded the events in the weeks surrounding the Feast Day, these events are continuing to grow and raise more money every year. Local Residents, Organisations and business all continue to support the Feast Committee generously with their time and donations. These events simply bring the village together and go on to support local good causes. In 2015 the Buckby Feast organising committee took the decision to make the Feast Day celebrations (usually on August Bank Holiday Monday) a biennial event.

Buckby Feast week 2019 There will be NO Feast Day this year! There will be the usual fundraising events from Saturday 17th August – Wednesday 28th August

Ask Sheaf Street Health Store

Clear skin solutions In this new series from Sheaf Street Health Store, the experienced team will be addressing every-day queries that customers ask in-store. This article does not seek to diagnose or treat, if you are suffering from any health condition or are currently taking prescribed medication, please consult your GP before considering any complementary therapies. Q: I am 42, and still experience teenage-style spots on my chin and forehead, are there any natural solutions I can try? A: Let’s start with food and lifestyle; make sure you are eating a healthy rainbow diet with a generous array of colourful fruit, vegetables, good fats and nourishing proteins, at least a litre of water daily and limiting sugar intake. Skin conditions can affect both men and women; the British Skin Foundation estimates 60% of the population is affected at some point in their life by a skin condition. This can include acne, eczema, premature ageing or skin tone issues. Depending on the severity - the conditions can be difficult to

58

manage physically and emotionally. The American Academy of Dermatology also published a study which shows that late-onset or adult-onset acne is becoming increasingly common in women in their 20s to 50s. Tackling breakouts requires support for several body processes. Nutrients known to compliment digestion and liver function, reduce inflammation and support hormonal health can make big changes in skin health and appearance. Carotenoids, probiotics (good gut bacteria), omega-3 fats, zinc, vitamin C and vitamin E all have roles to play in skin health and integrity. We recommend following the Clear Skin Programme, developed by ethical vitamin company Viridian Nutrition. Developed to support optimal skin health, the Clear Skin Programme incorporates recipes from The Clear Skin Cookbook by TV chef Dale Pinnock, together with two nutritional supplements - Clear Skin Complex capsules and Organic Clear Skin Omega Oil – and gets results within 60 days.

Please mention The Village Emporium when responding to adverts

Feature The 2017 Clear Skin survey confirmed the results from a similar survey in 2013, and reported that 76% of participants described their skin condition to be ‘better’ or ‘much better’ after following the Clear Skin Programme for 60 days. Before and after Participants submitted ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos and filled in questionnaires on their skin condition over the duration of the project. Comments from the participants in the Clear Skin survey:

Recommended Reads by Shaun Higgs: Dirty Vegan by Matt Pritchard.

Lucy, 25, before Lucy, after completing the participating in the Clear Clear Skin Programme. Skin Programme. “I feel a lot happier about my skin now, it is noticeably clearer, less inflamed and even softer. I feel more confident in leaving the house and being in public with little to no make-up on.” “I’m much happier now with my skin. It has become much smoother. It is also good to know some information about what happens inside your skin. The book inspired me to cut down on eating sugary things and I started to eat more healthily.” Visit Sheaf Street Health Store, 20 Sheaf Street, in Daventry, for a one-to-one chat, and more information.

Dirty Vegan has been a real find for me, because Matt is an Ironman veteran and properly understands how to feed endurance athletes. Before becoming a celebrity chef and best-selling food writer, Matt found fame as a world-class skateboarder and performed as a stuntman for TV’s ‘Dirty Sanchez’ team. His interest in veganism was sparked while training as a triathlete and realised that he could become faster and fitter - and rediscover his love of cooking - without hurting animals. The best-selling ‘Dirty Vegan Cookbook’ is a spin-off from Matt’s BBC TV vegan cookery show. It’s really easy to love this book – full of little anecdotes and tips, alongside tasty, healthy recipes with easy cooking techniques, from a record-breaking hard-man, charity champion and allround animal lover.

Ten everyday ways to reduce plastic waste Eight million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year, killing and harming marine life. Together, we can help to put an end to this plastic surge by cutting out small, everyday plastic use. Here are ten tips to help reduce your plastic waste. 1. Say no to plastic straws

6. Choose cardboard over plastic when you can

We use more than 500 MILLION plastic straws every single day. If you would like to use a straw, invest in a steel, bamboo, and glass straws that you can carry with you and reuse.

Cardboard can be more easily recycled and unlike plastic, will biodegrade over time. Buying products such as laundry detergent in cardboard boxes will help to reduce the plastic that needs to be produced.

2. Bring a reusable shopping bag with you

7. Replace your plastic toothbrush

More than 1 million bags are used across the globe every day and annually, about 500 billion plastic bags are produced. Make sure you always remember to bring your own bag with you.

One billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown out every single year, creating about 50 million pounds of waste annually. Bamboo tothbrushes perform just as well as plastic ones but the handle of a bamboo toothbrush only takes about 6 months to biodegrade back into the soil. On the other hand, a plastic toothbrush will never biodegrade and will remain in the environment forever.

3. Get rid of the plastic water bottle Reusable water bottles are now made in all sizes, shapes, and materials, there is no reason to continue to use plastic water bottles. A single person using a reusable, refillable water bottle instead of single-use plastic water bottles can save as much as 170 bottles from being produced each year.

4. Pack your lunch in glass containers instead of plastic Ditch the plastic sandwich bags and use something more eco-friendly than single-use plastic. There are many brands that make glass containers with lids for all of your packed-food needs.

5. Carry a reusable coffee cup Around 2.5bn coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK alone – that’s seven million a day! Less than 1% of these can be recycled, meaning most spend up to 50 years in landfill, after lasting just minutes in your hand. Lots of coffee outlets offer a discount when you use your own cup and there are many eco-friendly options out there.

60

8. Avoid cosmetic products that contain microbeads Millions of plastic microbeads are washed down the drain each year, posing a serious threat to marine life who mistake these small plastic particles for food. Avoid anything with “polyethylene” listed as an ingredient.

9. Buy loose tea Use loose leaf tea with a tea strainer instead of teabags that are sealed with plastic. Disposing of teabags ultimately leads to microplastics entering our waterways and eventually our food chain.

10. Shop your local farmers market. Farmers markets are a great way to buy fresh, local produce without plastic – just remember to bring your own bags.

Recipe

Seasonal recipe

A terrine of summer fruits Ingredients 215 fl oz (425 ml) sparkling rosé wine 2 oz (50 g) caster sugar 2 x 0.4 oz (11 g) sachets gelatine powder 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 12 oz (350 g) small strawberries 8 oz (225 g) raspberries 12 oz (350 g) blackcurrants, redcurrants and blueberries – 4 oz (110 g) of each or any other combination you like.

Equipment Two 2 lb (900 g) loaf tins, 7½ x 4¾ inches x 3½ inches deep (19 x 12 cm x 9 cm deep), preferably non-stick.

Method Remove the stalks from fruit and halve the strawberries if they are big. Mix the fruits together gently to avoid bruising them in a large bowl. In a small saucepan heat half the rosé wine till it begins to simmer, then whisk the sugar and gelatine into it. Make sure that everything has dissolved completely before adding the remaining wine and the lime juice. Then pour the liquid into a jug and allow it to cool. While that’s happening, lay the mixed fruit in one of the loaf tins – arrange the bottom layer with the smallest,

62

prettiest-shaped fruit as this will be on top when the terrine is turned out. Next, pour all but 5 floz (150 ml) of the liquid over the fruit. Now lay a sheet of cling film over the tin, place the other tin directly on top, then put two unopened tins of tomatoes or something similar to act as weights into the top tin and put the whole lot into the fridge for about 1 hour, or until it has set. Then warm up the remaining 5 fl oz (150 ml) wine mixture and pour it over the surface of the terrine. Re-cover with cling film and return to the fridge overnight to set firm. Turn out the terrine by dipping the tin very briefly in hot water and inverting it on to a plate. Use a very sharp knife (also dipped first into hot water) to cut it into slices. Serve with chilled pouring cream, crème fraîche or Greek yoghurt.

Seasonal veg July/August Artichokes, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chillis, cos lettuce, courgette, cucumber, curly lettuce, fennel, french beans, garlic, iceberg lettuce, Jersey Royal potatoes, kohlrabi, mangetout, onions, pak choi, peas, radishes, rocket, runner beans, savoy cabbage, samphire, spinach, spring onions, tomatoes, turnip, watercress

Helping your dog in the summer heat Serious risk Heat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat through their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is often fatal.

Signs & symptoms Rapid breathing, heavy panting, lethargy, agitation or disorientation, drooling, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, fitting/seizures.

Preventing a disaster Being aware that your dog is very susceptible to heat stroke is a major factor in preventing it. You should make sure that: They aren’t locked inside the car on a warm day. Your dog has access to shade, and plenty of cool drinking water. You don’t over-exercise them, or take your dog out during the hottest part of the day.

What to do!! If you suspect your dog has heat stroke you need to cool it down without making them too cold once the panting has stopped. Seek help from a vet as a matter of urgency,

even if you’re not sure whether they’re in danger. Organ failure can occur over a longer period of time, and fast action can save their life even if you think everything is fine.

Dogs in hot cars A car can become an oven very quickly even when it doesn’t feel that warm. When it is 22°c outside - within an hour - the temperature in a car can reach an unbearable 47°c. Never leave a dog in a car, even for a moment. “Not long” is too long. If you see a dog in distress inside a car, official advice is to dial 999 immediately and ask for the police. A dog in distress in a hot car is an emergency and the police will advise you what to do based on the situation. Depending on the severity of the situation, the police may attend and break into the car to gain access to the dog, or they may advise you to do this. If you decide to break into a car without proper justification, this could be classed as criminal damage and you may need to defend your actions in a court. Call the police using 999 and tell them what you intend to do and why. Take pictures and/or videos of the dog in distress and the names and phone numbers of witnesses.
