Paul Hollywood – eat your heart out! With their blenders whirring and cake plates polished, some of the county’s finest cafés have been battling it out in the hope of being named ‘Independent Café/Tea Room of the Year’ in this year’s Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards! The competition, devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP), is now in its seventh year and is again aimed at celebrating all that is great about local produce and drink, recognising excellence within the county’s dining venues and rewarding those who work so hard within the culinary sector. Using the details from their entry forms and the reviews from mystery shopping of all the entries which flooded in from all corners of the county, the six finalists chosen to compete at the bake-off at Northampton College were (in alphabetical order): Beckworth Emporium, Mears Ashby Dreams Coffee Lounge, Northampton Evergreen Art Café, Daventry The Apothocoffee Shop, Earls Barton The Forest Café, Hartwell The Park Café, Abington Park, Northampton The venues were asked to prepare, cook and serve a scone, a signature cake or biscuit and a drink to a team of ‘diners’, including Dawn Knott from category sponsor Pidy UK, Chief Executive of Northamptonshire County Council, Paul Blantern, and Northampton North MP Michael Ellis who is himself no stranger to baking glory being the current Parliamentary cupcake champion!
contestant in the 2013 series of the BBC’s ‘Great British Bake Off’ who, as a judge at the event for the last three years, was impressed by all those taking part; “I’m always thrilled to be invited to this wonderful event and each year, I can’t quite believe that the standard could possibly get any better – yet it does!” explained Deborah. “From their use of fine local ingredients, to their impressive piping and decorating skills, not to mention their delicious finished products, each of these venues was worthy of the title and I urge anyone in search of a tasty treat to go out and try them!” she enthused. The six finalists now have to wait until Thursday 15th October to discover their fate when the winners and runners-up in all 18 categories will be announced at the Awards Dinner taking place at Royal & Derngate in Northampton. Tickets priced at £100 (plus VAT) or £900 (plus VAT) for a table of ten are available by calling Rachel Mallows on 01933 664437 or emailing rachel@rachelmallows. com More details of the Awards can be found at the www.northamptonshirefoodanddrink.co.uk while you can also follow the competition on twitter at @foodawardsHQ or on Facebook at facebook.com/foodawards
And while they sieved, whisked and sliced they were being watched and scored on everything from hygiene to organisation, service and of course taste by a panel of judges which included food consultant Claire Jezard, former cookery school director Mary Laing and Deborah Manger, a

Freeze your assets You know what it’s like? You toil all summer and then, like buses, all your fruit and veg come at once! One of best ways to make your seasonal glut last beyond it’s sell-by-date and feed you well into the winter is to freeze it The freezer can be a great way of preserving your produce. You can make pesto, purees and soups and save them for leaner times.
Freezing herbs in oil One of the simplest things to preserve in the freezer are herbs. You can freeze herbs in oil. as this reduces some of the browning and freezer burn that herbs can get. This works best with the tougher hard herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano. These are all herbs that would probably be cooked when added to a dish.
Freezing fruit Wash fruits and sort for damaged fruit before freezing. Some fruits do best with a sugar or sugar-syrup preparation. Blueberries, currants, and cranberries do fine without sugar. With delicate berries like strawberries or raspberries, arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer to a plastic freezer bag or container. For fruits that tend to brown, like apples, peaches, nectarines and apricots, treat with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Look for the powdered form in health food stores. To make an ascorbic acid wash: Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of ascorbic acid powder in 3 tablespoons water. Sprinkle this mixture over the cut fruit.
Thawing Most vegetables can go directly from freezer to boiling water, though corn does best when allowed to thaw a bit first. Fruits are best when allowed to thaw at room temperature. Delicate berries can turn mushy when thawed completely, so consider eating them before they’re thoroughly thawed, such as in smoothies or as a topping for ice cream or yogurt. • • • • • • •
Freeze fruits and veggies when they’re at their peak of freshness. Blanch vegetables first, then submerge in ice water. Dry thoroughly. Freeze fruits and vegetables quickly. Store in heavy-weight, air-tight containers or freezer bags. Fill containers to the top and remove as much air as possible from freezer bags. Fruits and veggies freeze best at 0-degrees F or colder. Store frozen fruits for about a year; vegetables, about 18 months. (Storing longer is fine, but the quality may decline.)
Freezing Vegetables When freezing vegetables, first blanch them briefly in boiling water. Then quickly submerge in ice water to prevent them from cooking. Dry thoroughly on paper towel and pack snuggly to avoid air contact.

Is it a Grass Snake or is it an Adder? Here in the UK we only have three native species of snake, one of which is venomous, the European Adder (Vipera berus). The good news is that bites from this species of snake are very uncommon and rarely causes fatalities. The European Adder resides in heathland, moorland and open woodland and is very rarely found in gardens or urban areas frequented by people and domestic pets. You are much more likely to come across a grass snake than an adder in Warwickshire and Northamptonshire with only a handful of historic records for this species. There are a number of very distinctive features that can help you tell the difference.
Grass snake
l A long snake capable of reaching well over a metre in length. l Grey-green to dark olive in colour. l Distinctive black bars down the sides of the body. l Distinctive yellow and black collar around the neck. l Often found near water and a very good swimmer.
Adder l A small, stocky snake up to 70 cm in length. l Males are grey with black zig-zag stripe. l Females are light brown with dark brown zig zag stripe. l There is a distinctive «V» or «X» shaped marking on head and a row of dark spots on each side.
There have been a lot of media scares recently with ‘killer snakes’. With regards all snakes it is important to remember they are very illusive and will go out of their way to avoid contact with people. Most people who are bitten were handling the snake. So the best thing to do is observe from a safe distance! Adders in particular rely on their venom to hunt and kill prey and will only use it as a last resource bite in defence. Venom is a valuable resource and expends a lot of energy to produce. Therefore it is much more likely a snake will flee from a threat then choose to stay and confront it. No one has died from adder bite in Britain for over 20 years. With proper treatment, the worst effects are nausea and drowsiness, followed by swelling and bruising in the area of the bite. Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill? …..and such beautiful results – try Quilting The word “quilt” comes from the Latin culcita meaning a stuffed sack, but it came into the English language from the French word cuilte. The origins of quilting remain unknown, but sewing techniques of piecing, appliqué, and quilting have been used for clothing and furnishings in diverse parts of the world for several millennia.
opportunities to bring a sewing machine as well as hand sewing and members are free to bring their own projects to sit and sew evenings. Membership costs £20 per year plus a charge of £1 for ordinary meetings, speaker meetings are £3. Prospective new members are welcome to come and join us for three meetings before being expected to join. This year sees us celebrating our 30th Anniversary on Tuesday 22nd September, when we would welcome anyone interested in joining us.
The earliest known quilted garment is depicted on the carved ivory figure of a Pharaoh of the Egyptian First Dynasty, about 3400 B.C. and the skill has been part of our history ever since and long may it continue. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material to make a quilt. Typically, quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter’s hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire area where quilting is wanted. A rocking, straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional, or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done to create bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out.

Cloudy2Clear – A Simple Way To Save Money Cloudy2Clear Windows, the Northampton based window repair company, are revolutionising how homeowners view double glazing in our area. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as customers take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore is more than happy to explain the process. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. I find people are amazed at just
how simple the process is and the speed with which we can replace the glass. This isn’t like when you have new frames put in with people levering out the old ones with loads of mess. We can pop the old glass out and deliver, effectively, a brand new window within a matter of minutes. At the end of the day most frames, even timber ones, will last forever. It’s very rare we come across a window that needs a full replacement and that means the customer gets, effectively, a new window at a fraction of the cost.’
www.cloudy2clear.co.uk. For example, he recently completed an installation at Mr Miners house in Northampton. Here’s what he had to say. ‘I have to say that I thought the service Cloudy2Clear offer compared to having completely new windows absolutely incredible value. The service was reliable, simple and without complication.
The windows look absolutely brilliant and installation was incredibly quick. Thank you!’ High praise indeed! So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be more than happy to help!
Trevor is rightly proud too of comments he receives back from satisfied customers, a selection of which he has put on his website

Welcome to Rugby
Enjoy Rugby When William Webb Ellis caught a football at Rugby School and ran with it, a game was born. And though the game has changed since Webb Ellis created history in 1823, its heart remains in the town of Rugby. It’s the reason thousands of rugby fans flock to Rugby every year - to make the pilgrimage to the proud home and birthplace of the game. Until Webb Ellis’s definitive act, the game of football had included handling the ball but no-one had been permitted to hold it and run towards the opposite goal. Progress forward was by kicking, hacking and what today might be described as an enormous rolling maul involving up to 60 players. In 1820 the game was played a little like football but players were allowed to catch the ball and then kick it out of their hands. There were no limits to the number of players on each side, evident in 1839 when Queen Adelaide visited the school to see the School House team of 75 boys play against ‘the rest’, a team of 225!
will be located on Old Market Place in the heart of Rugby town centre, and just a stone’s throw from Rugby station and Rugby School - the birthplace of the game.
In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed, largely of Old Rugbeians, and the first national code was introduced. Rugby School was the only team to play in white, and the reason England play in white is that the first committee of the RFU was composed largely of Old Rugbeians.
On days when we will not be showing Rugby World Cup matches the Rugby Village will host events and activities as part of our Enjoy Rugby Festival. The festival will celebrate Rugby’s heritage from 12 September to 6 November 2015 and events will cover the arts, engineering, literature, film, sport, science, food and drink. Each event celebrates some part of Rugby’s history and heritage.
Rugby will become one big festival area during Rugby World Cup 2015. Rugby’s official Fanzone
The Fanzone will have a capacity of 2000 people, with free entry throughout Rugby World Cup 2015 for fans and families. It will feature a big screen with live coverage of matches, entertainment, food and drink and rugby-based activities. It will be free to enter on match days, and will operate throughout the tournament providing a fun and lively place to congregate and watch the matches.

Welcome to Rugby
Made in Rugby From the jet engine to Alice in Wonderland, Rugby’s influence on the world stretches far beyond the sport which bears its name. It’s provided the inspiration for literary classics, the foundations for pioneering work in science and engineering - Rugby’s given the world more than a game. Gilberts Rugby Footballs William Gilbert, a local bootmaker, took up ball-making to supply the school. In 1842, he established the first rugby football workshop, now the Rugby Football Museum, and the building with the longest continuous connection to the game of rugby in the world. The building in which the museum is housed has been at the centre of rugby ball manufacturing for over 160 years, beginning a tradition of rugby football manufacture that is carried on by Webb Ellis Ltd to this day.
Rupert Brooke Rugby was the birthplace of Rupert Brooke, the famous First World War poet whose sonnets captured the idealism of the early years of the Great War.Brooke’s collection of work - 1914 and Other Poems - was published in May 1915, just weeks after the 27-year-old died from sepsis while serving with the Royal Navy. But his words still resonate to this day, and Rugby has commemorated Rupert Brooke by erecting a statue in his honour in the town centre.
The Jet Engine Sir Frank Whittle made crucial breakthroughs in the engine’s development while working in Rugby. Sir Frank ran the first successful test of his turbojet engine at Rugby’s British Thomson-Houston works on 12 April 1937, and in the following years based his design team at the town’s Brownsover Hall while the prototype was perfected at a disused foundry in nearby Lutterworth.
Lewis Carroll A young Charles Lutwidge Dodgson arrived in Rugby in 1846 and spent three years studying at the public school before leaving for Oxford University. A decade later, writing under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll, he found worldwide fame with the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, one of the cornerstones of the literary nonsense genre. Holography Dennis Gabor, a Hungarian-born scientist, was invited to work at British Thomson-Houston after fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s.Settling in Rugby, Gabor’s place in history was secured in 1947 when he invented holography - the technique which produces holograms. He was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work. Tom Brown’s School Days Former Rugby School pupil Thomas Hughes was a lawyer, judge and a Member of Parliament. But it was his first novel - Tom Brown’s School Days which cemented his place in history. Published in 1857, the novel tells the tale of Tom Brown’s life at Rugby School - targeted by the bully Flashman and guided by the headmaster, Dr Thomas Arnold. Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer A scientist and astronomer, Rugby-born Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer was credited with the discovery of the gas helium in 1868, together with French scientist Pierre Janssen. Both men had observed a prominent yellow line in a spectrum taken near the edge of the sun - and Lockyer suggested an unknown solar element was the cause. He named the element helium after the Greek word ‘helios’ - meaning sun.

So much going on... Shopping
Food and Drink Festival
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping in the historic market town of Rugby, with a wide range of stores to explore during your visit. From major high street stores to smaller, independent shops, Rugby offers a great shopping experience - and when you’re in need of rest after your retail therapy, you’ll find a host of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants in which to relax and unwind.
If you love your food and drink make sure you get the dates for this year’s ‘Rugby Food and Drink Festival’ in your diary – Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September. Taking place in the town centre the event celebrates and showcases the amazing variety of high quality food, drink and ‘Real Ales’ that the town and surrounding area has to offer. This year the event will have a special Rugby World Cup 2015 theme as it coincides with the international tournament hosted by England.
Eating Out Rugby offers first-class chefs, excellent local produce, great service and a world of flavours and cuisine. Rugby and its surrounding villages are home to a superb range of places to eat out, whatever your budget. The town comes alive at night so whether dressing up or dressing down, you are guaranteed vibrant and dynamic nights out in the town’s clubs, pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants.
Rugby Fashion & Lifestyle Show As part of the Enjoy Rugby Festival, Rugby First will be putting on a Fashion and Lifestyle show featuring Autumn and Winter collections supplied by local retailers. The show will feature professional style advice, pop-up shops, a catwalk show, stylish on-trend fashion plus home and lifestyle.
How do I get into Rugby? Ranging from the non-contact forms of rugby such as beach rugby, touch & tag to the full contact rugby sevens, tens, and veterans, these variations are great for those who flinch at the sight of a scrum but enjoy the incomparable buzz of scoring a try. There is no limit to the level you can reach either; these variants are represented at international level.
The preconception that these different forms of the game are just for children couldn’t be further from the truth: even the pros are quite partial to a game of touch or tag rugby during training sessions. Rugby truly is a game to be enjoyed by all. There are several variants of the traditional 15-a-side game, all of which are enjoyed worldwide.
England have highly successful men’s and women’s Rugby Sevens sides, who compete all over the planet in tournaments, demonstrating key skills that are important for progression towards the full England first teams.

Northamptonshire’s Tastiest Treats Revealed The oven gloves are now firmly off among some of the county’s finest producers as they battle for it out for culinary glory in the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards. The Awards, devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP) and now in their seventh year, are aimed at celebrating all that is great about local produce and drink, recognising excellence within the county’s dining venues and rewarding those who work so hard within the culinary sector. After much deliberating, cogitating and digesting by two select panels of experts at the recent product and drink judging sessions staged at Holdenby House and at the reigning ‘Community Pub of the Year – Town’, The Malt Shovel Tavern in Northampton respectively, the shortlisted finalists in the five categories have been chosen from a record number of entries. They are (in alphabetical order within the category): Artisan Sweet Product of the Year (sponsored by Moulton College): Amaretti Tiffin - The Corner Deli & Sandwich Shop, Kettering Cornish Sea Salted Caramels - Belflair Chocolates, Brackley Fruitilicious Granola with Nuts and Seeds - Most Marvellous Baking, Northampton Rich Fruit Cake - Elliotts Kitchen Fine Foods, Towcester Swiss Roll Raspberry Puree Ice Cream Cake - A Rossi and Partners, Kettering Artisan Savoury Product of the Year (sponsored by Heygates Flour and Animal Feed): Hobnail Goat Cheese – NeneView Dairy, Stanwick Nice Try Lamb Pie – Sauls of Spratton, Spratton Pastrami – Ashley Farm Shop, Ashley
50
Pork, Apple and Black Pudding Scotch Egg – Elliotts Kitchen Fine Foods, Towcester Potato, Leek and Stilton Pie – The Moulton Pie Company, Moulton New Local Product of the Year (sponsored by Whitworth Bros. Ltd Flour Millers): Fruitilicious Granola with Nuts and Seeds – Most Marvellous Baking, Northampton Middle Eastern Marmalade – Friars Farm, Northampton Rapstick Goat Cheese – NeneView Dairy, Stanwick Rhubarb and GINger Cake – Most Marvellous Baking, Northampton Skyver Goat Cheese – NeneView Dairy, Stanwick Artisan Local Drink of the Year: Apple Juice – Windmill Orchards, Sulgrave Becket’s Ale – Phipps NBC, Northampton Bible Black Porter – Nene Valley Brewery, Oundle Booze Hound – Gun Dog Ales, Woodford Halse Northamptonshire Bitter – Hoggley’s Brewery, Northampton New Local Drink of the Year: Bell Ringer – Towcester Mill Brewery, Towcester Founder’s Reserve East India Pale Ale – Phipps NBC, Northampton Plum Cider – Saxby’s Cider, Irchester Ratliffe’s Celebrated Stout – Phipps NBC, Northampton Additionally, while not shortlisted, One Track Mind from Brigstock Brewery at Brigstock was also ‘Commended’ by the judges in the ‘New Local Drink’ category. Among those new finalists to be celebrating their success is John Evans from Towcester Mill Brewery; “We’re absolutely thrilled that we have
Please mention The Village Emporium when responding to adverts
Out and about been shortlisted, especially as we’ve just marked the first anniversary of the opening of the newly refurbished brewery after we moved into the town from Whittlebury” explained John. “It’s been a lot of hard work in bringing the old mill back to life but this helps to make all that effort worthwhile and we shall certainly be pulling a few pints in our community tap room to celebrate!” he added. Those are sentiments echoed by Vicky Robertson of Most Marvellous Baking in Northampton who is a triple finalist across two categories this year with her granola and rhubarb and ginger cake; “The publicity I had from being shortlisted last year brought a real boost to my business so I’m delighted to have been successful again” explained Vicky. “My cake uses rhubarb gin from one of last year’s winners, Warner Edwards, so here’s hoping that that might be the magic ingredient to take at least one of the titles this year!” she enthused. The winners and runners-up in all five categories will be decided by a second panel of judges later in the year and the results, along with those of the other thirteen categories in the competition, will be announced at the Awards Dinner taking place at Royal & Derngate in Northampton on Thursday 15th October. Meanwhile visitors to both the Northamptonshire Food Show at Holdenby on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September and the Althorp Food Festival on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September will have chance to sample some of the twenty-four shortlisted products and drinks.

Student survival
There are plenty of student cookbooks out there, but one thing too many seem to have in common is that they’re laughably over-ambitious. Moroccan chicken is undeniably delicious, but not many students are willing to set aside part of their weekly vodka budget for harissa paste or ras el hanout. And although whole chickens might be great value, I can tell you exactly how many times I bothered to roast one at university – zero. What I did eat was pasta, and lots of it. It’s quick to cook, tasty and – most importantly for a student – cheap. And, although white pasta is admittedly a little lacking on the nutritional side of things, it is quick and tasty! Italy’s favourite carbohydrate doesn’t need to be an unhealthy meal. Opting for wholegrain now and again will provide a valuable dollop of fibre, and cheap vegetables are easily incorporated. Onions and tinned tomatoes cost just pennies, and are,
handily, also probably the easiest way to create a flavoursome sauce. Here are three recipes I remember from my student days. I’ve given the quantities to make one serving, as you’ll probably mostly be cooking for yourself, but if you double the recipe you’ll have fewer leftovers – e.g, instead of half a tin of tomatoes, you’ll use the entire thing. I often cooked for two and kept the remaining portion for the next night or shared it with a friend. This served the admirable purpose of both keeping costs down and stopping half-empty tubs filling up the fridge. After all, if that happens, where will you keep the Vodka

Your family Pasta with Lemon & Crème Fraiche Smoked salmon trimmings are one of the best value items you can buy in a supermarket – for around just £1.50, you can enjoy what is usually a luxury. Fish oils are good for the brain, too. Serves one Splash of olive oil One clove of garlic, finely chopped 100g pasta 60g smoked salmon trimmings (around half a Tesco value pack) Two tablespoons crème fraiche Zest of half a lemon and a squeeze of lemon juice Black pepper Heat a pan of salted water till boiling and add your pasta. While that’s cooking, fry the garlic in the olive oil until pale gold and softened. Add the crème fraiche, the lemon zest and juice and the salmon trimmings. Mix together and cook on a medium heat until the sauce is warmed through and thickened slightly. When your pasta is cooked, drain it, then add to the crème fraiche pan and mix together with the sauce. Top with plenty of black pepper and serve.
Sort-of pasta puttanesca (‘Tart’s spaghetti’)
This Italian staple is ideal for students because it contains no meat, which is often prohibitively expensive on a university budget. But salty anchovies more than make up in terms of flavour. The spinach isn’t conventional, but will give you some all-important vegetable matter without breaking the bank. Serves one
Splash of olive oil 100g spaghetti Half a 400g can of chopped tomatoes 2-3 anchovies, from a tin or jar One clove of garlic, finely chopped
60g spinach (you can use fresh, but frozen is cheaper – keep a bag in the freezer and defrost as needed) A heaped teaspoon of capers (sounds luxurious but a jar keeps well in the fridge). Pinch of chilli flakes Handful of black olives, roughly chopped (optional) Heat the oil in a pan, then cook the garlic till pale gold and softened. Add the tomatoes, anchovies, olives (if using), chilli flakes and the capers and simmer for 10 minutes or so until thickened. Cook pasta according to the packet instructions, mix with the sauce and serve.
Sausage, fennel and tomato pasta
You might roll your eyes at the idea of buying fennel seeds, but for a pound or so, you’ll have a jar of flavour that will liven up plenty of meals and probably last you your first year. Alternatively, just leave them out. Serves one Splash of olive oil 2 sausages, squeezed out of their skins and rolled into rough meatballs Teaspoon ground fennel seeds (you can bash them with a book or rolling pin inside a plastic bag if, as is likely, there’s no pestle and mortar available) Half a 400g tin of chopped tomatoes Garlic clove, chopped Red wine (Optional, but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a bottle of this lying round the house) Pinch of dried chilli flakes Heat the oil in a frying pan on a medium heat. Once it’s hot, add the sausage meatballs and fry until browned and cooked through. Add the garlic and fry till softened, then pour in the wine and cook for a few minutes until it’s bubbling and mostly evaporated. Add the chilli and fennel, stir to combine and allow to cook for a few minutes. (It’s probably wise to get your pasta cooking around now) Add your tomatoes. Mix with the sausages and simmer for around 10-15 minutes or until your sauce is thickened. Drain pasta, mix with sauce and serve. A little grated cheese doesn’t go amiss on top, if you have it.

If you have an oval shaped face with a rounded chin and forehead, consider yourself lucky! You’ll look good in almost anything, but make sure you select a frame that is wide enough to maintain balance. A round face needs to look narrower and longer, which can be achieved with soft but angular frames that are not too deep. Geometric shapes and ones with embellished arms also give the face more definition.
Sudoku Place the numbers 1-9 exactly once in each row, column and bold-lined jigsaw region.

If your face is square with a broad forehead, wide jaw and square chin, soften the angles by wearing oval or round frames that are not too wide. These will soften the jaw and help emphasise the eyes.
In addition, ensure that the top edge of the frame is no higher than the eyebrows and that the lower edge does not sit on the cheekbones.

A rectangular face is longer with a square chin, deep forehead, high cheekbones and long nose. Large, wide, square frames with a strong top line help shorten the face, and a low bridge will shorten the nose.

Daventry/Westerburg 30 YEARS OF TWINNING 1985 -2015 Since 1983 Daventry has successfully maintained cultural links with Westerburg Town and District in Germany although the official Charter was not signed until 26th October 1985. Daventry Fire Station and Daventry Brass Band recently entertained Westerburg Brass Band giving a very successful concert at the Daventry Community Centre. In October the Twinning Association celebrates 30 years of the partnership with Westerburg and to celebrate they have replaced the Coat of Arms on London Road, Daventry which were in a bad state or repair, this has been possible by sponsorship from Daventry Town Council and the excellent work by Amber Screen and Display of Dodford who kindly donated new flags
Daventry/Westerburg History A town of some 21,000 inhabitants in the province of the Westerw채ld which has a history dating back to 1100AD. The nearest cities to Westerburg are Cologne, Koblenz and Frankfurt. Its principal landmark is its mediaeval castle dating from the 12th century. The surrounding area of Westerburg is purely rural, rolling hills, green fields and basalt and clay quarrying which is used mainly for the potteries. Montabaur and Westerburg were the main towns in two separate districts until 1974 when as in England the amalgamation of the districts took place. In many respects Daventry and Westerburg are alike as they both stemmed from pre-historic sites, where Daventry had an Abbey erected in the town in 1090 Westerburg had an Abbey 100 years previous

Feature
September 23rd is a special date in the gardening clander. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length. Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit. This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year.
72
Garden View
Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on the patio. Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leaf-raking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season. The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016. The Emporium Gardener
