Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Northampton area and manager

Trevor Skidmore agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Be smart and safe this summer Summer will be here shortly, “we hope”. Unfortunately house break-ins increase during this time of the year. Here at Smarter Security Solutions we are fully aware of the impact a break-in can have at any time of the year especially in the summer during holidays season. When people are relaxing in the garden and trying to keep the house cool.

When it’s time to go on holiday

Smarter Security would like to give you some tips on how to make your home safer during this summer period.

8.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Make sure all your doors and down stairs windows are secured at night. When you go out don’t leave upstairs windows open even with a set alarm, any draughts could cause false alarms. Don’t leave large front windows open if you are going to be in the garden Secure any ladders, so they can’t be used for upstairs windows.

5. 6. 7.

Inform a trusted neighbour you are going on holiday Put lights on to time clocks to come on during the night Leave a car on the drive or ask a neighbour to use the drive while you are away If you’re going abroad don’t put your home address on the luggage label

Smarter Security Systems would like to wish you all a safe and happy summer holiday. www.smartersecurity.co.uk

Emmeline Pankhurst Day It still happens today: women struggling for the right to be recognised on an equal footing with men; women fighting to have a say in how things are run in male-dominated governments; women dying for daring to stand up for what they believe. This was the situation in the UK at the start of last century, but by 1918 - following the valiant efforts of women during World War l when they undertook jobs normally carried out by men and proved they could do the work just as well - women over the age of 30 were granted the right to vote. Ten years later this was extended to women aged 21 and over. Emmeline Pankhurst was instrumental in winning women the right to vote. Born in Manchester on 15th July 1858, she launched the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903. Notorious for their ‘deeds not words’ approach, its members literally fought their way to victory with demonstrations, window smashing, arson, bombings, kidnappings, hunger strikes and by chaining themselves to railings. Their most famous act of violence occurred in 1913 when Emily Davison was killed after throwing herself under the king’s horse. On July 14th we commemorate Emmeline Pankhurst Day, but perhaps the best way we can celebrate her achievement is by exercising our right to vote.

Roasted rhubarb and creme brulee tartlet Serves 6-8

Shopping list 1 x 20cm pastry tart case – prebaked ( in the restaurant we would obviously make these but you can cheat if required) 4 stems of rhubarb 4 egg yolks 250ml double cream 100g caster sugar ½ tsp vanilla paste/extract Icing sugar for dusting For the filling Split the rhubarb length ways and cut into 2cm batons, dust with icing sugar then roast in a hot oven for 10-15 minutes until tender and juice is seeping out. Strain off and save the juice, place the rhubarb in the bottom of the tart case.

To make the custard Whisk up the egg yolks, double cream, caster sugar, vanilla and remaining juice from the rhubarb until all the ingredients are combined. Pour custard over the rhubarb and bake at 160oC for 20-25 minutes until custard is set with a wiggle (cooking times may vary due to fan assisted ovens so please keep an eye on your tartlet, guide time only). Remove from oven, dust with icing sugar and blow torch for a crust finish (optional). Chill for 2 hours, portion and serve. Serve with fresh strawberries while watching Wimbledon. The Whole Package with little packing!

Our helpful guide to packing the beach holiday suitcase will ensure a lighter case and have you looking perfect with minimal effort. A bit of forward planning is wise. Take some notes on what you want to wear each day before you go. Gather the items in front of you and even edit.

A Summer LBD

Colours

Breton Stripe

Keep your colour scheme straightforward with black, white, navy and grey with little bursts of brights and print. Scarves or a jacket contribute colour and print to add to a simple palette.

White Cotton Shirt

A slouchy long sleeved cotton or linen shirt can act as a suitable and stylish cover up for breakfast or lunch. Roll up the sleeves of the shirt and combine other separtes, a scarf or a low slung necklace and right there you have you’re evening look.

A White Dress

The ‘little black dress’ in fabric that can be dressed up or down. Colours, textures and prints can be added to offer interest.

A Breton stripe tee dress delivers daytime chic in a restaurant.

The Sarong

The Sarong is the most versatile holiday item you can lay your hands on. Wrap it around like a skirt, wrap it around your neck to create a halter neck. It then covers the upper body and a little of the lower body. Wear as a scarf.Fold sarong in half and knot both loose corners at the bottom to create armholes for arms to go into. The result being a cover up in the basic form of a cardigan or jacket.

A white beach dress again can be used day and night.

Feature

Kaftan

Another oversea’s favourite. So uncomplicated giving good overall coverage in some cases.

Other Useful Tips

Get your brows done and lashes tinted. Your make-up feels half done already or complete for the daytime. It won’t melt away under the suns rays. • • • •

Footwear • • • •

A lightweight trainer for travelling in. Flip Flops A dressy pair of flat shoes or heels in black or an easy colour to match with most of your garments. Pack breakables or socks/undies in shoes – use that space! It will also keep their shape.

Basic essentials

• • •

Take basic vests/tees in white/black/navy/grey or flesh colours. They piece items together perfectly and act as great cover ups daytime or evening.

A Shellac manicure and or a pedicure is also advisable. It will last you for the duration of your stay. Go for colour to show off a tan. A small make-up bag containing the minimum of what you need or feel you can’t go without. Sun Screen with some added shimmer! A good pair of shades is an absolute must. It may be worth while to invest in a good pair that last to avoid broken handles and lenses popping out and so on. Do fully charge all your technology before you go! Remember to take compatible plugs to your destination! Limit the number of hair styling tools. Ask the question, will your accomodation provide you with a hair-dryer? Do take an anti-bacterial lotion. Airports and other pitt stops can be bacteria ridden places. Do remember your passport and have fun!!

Hold your own family mini olympics It’s that time again, yes it really has been 4 years and now the Olympics are back. The 2016 Summer Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro from August 5th to 21st and this years event will have a record amount of sports and countries taking part.

Don’t let the athletes have all the fun! The Olympic Games provide the perfect excuse to rally your family for some good, oldfashioned outdoor activities and a little healthy competition. You don’t need much to organise your own mini olympics, just a few easy-to-find props and some open space. For best results, choose challenges that play to a variety of strengths and abilities.

Olympic Mascots Every Olympic Games has its mascots, and every team has their mascots too. Younger team members could have fun dressing up teddies and other toys to support their team!

Opening Ceremony Have your own opening ceremony. Get the kids busy making flags, hats and mascots, then parade around to display their creations. Play some good marching music or the theme tune from The Archers...

Indoor Games: • • • • • •

Paper plane folding and throwing Hoopla Basket ball Obstacle course Discus (using paper plates) Simple gymnastics displays

Outdoor Games: •

Water fights

Divide Into Teams Assign a country to each team - perhaps by picking names out of a hat. Specifying a colour for each team works well and you could always ask everyone to turn up wearing a T-shirt in their team’s colour to help with identification.

Party-time in Rio! The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be held from August 5th to 21st and will be the first Games to be hosted in South America.

• • • • • •

Throw the bean bag or sock (push a tennis ball into the toe of a sock and tie the other end). Of course you could throw practically anything - including wellies if it is a wet sort of day! Basketball Running races or all sorts, including distance races, three legged races, egg and spoon races, sack races and relay races Obstacle course Discus using frisbees High jump and/or long jump Tug ‘o’ war

You could also hold table tennis, badminton and tennis tournaments if you have the equipment

Medals and Closing Ceremony: Of course no Olympic Games can be complete without awarding medals and a closing ceremony. If possible, find some boxes so that medal winners can stand high to get their applause! Older kids will accept that there are winners (and losers) in every event, but for younger children you should plan to give every child a medal for something.

It will also be the third Games to be held in the southern hemisphere and will see close to 11,000 athletes from 206 nations compete across 306 events in 28 sports. Around 350 athletes will represent Team GB at Rio 2016. The Rio Olympics will be held in four venues in Rio, Brazil: Deodoro, Barra, Copacabana and Maracana - the site of the Olympic Stadium. A fleet of 21 jumbo jets would be required to fly all 10,500 athletes out to Rio. That’s a total space the size of 21 football pitches. Also in attendance will be 315 horses more than enough horses to fill a Grand National field seven times over. About 140,000 people are needed to host the Games in August. Of those, 90,000 will be employees with a further 50,000 volunteers.

Art Workshops at Vitreus Art We don’t just sit at our desks here at The Village Emporium – we also go out to see what’s going on in our lovely county. Recently our very own Sue Thomas enjoyed a day of glass fusing at Vitreus Arts, Studio & Gallery at The Wakefield Country Courtyard, near Potterspury – it really is worth a visit.

Class sizes are never bigger than six per workshop so with such a good student/teacher ratio you will be sure to get the attention you need. And congratulation to Vitreus Art on their recent nomination for the ‘Muddy Stilettoes Award’ for best Art Gallery in Northants – not bad after only being open for 18 months! Full details for Vitreus Art and their workshops can be found at www.vitreus-art.co.uk, or you can always call in for a chat, they will be more than happy to talk about what they do.

Vitreus Art brings you a vast array of workshops ranging from stained glass, glass fusing & glass appliqué, all taught by Jenny and Mike, the owners of Vitreus Art. And if glass isn’t your thing there are plenty of other workshops to choose from, ranging from encaustic wax, needle felting, textile sculpture, painting & drawing, printing, and mixed media. Mike and Jenny are always on the look-out for new and interesting workshops for you, and new for 2016 is Silk Painting; what will 2017 bring we wonder?

Travel the world on a gastronomic tour with Ferguson’s Restaurant Come and discover the culinary delights of food from around the world at Ferguson’s Restaurant. Tucked away just off Church Road, behind The Merchants in Rugby, you can travel the culinary world once a month with David and his team or stay closer to home with the regular choice of ever changing menus. The gastronomic tour kicked off in May with a traditional Scottish night, David Ferguson is from Glasgow so that made total sense! We were there to sample the Scottish evening and it did not disappoint. There was subtle live music to accompany the menu, then some great impromptu dancing. June featured the delights of traditional English food.

Where to next?

The following dates for the next leg of the Taste of the World tour are as follows, but booking early is strongly advised, on 01788 550222. 22nd July – Brazil, expect a fantastic meat extravaganza, and weather permitting it will use the walled courtyard. 19th August – Spain, great local produce to celebrate this wonderful palette of food.

Closer to home

If you’ve not yet experienced the culinary delights of Ferguson’s Restaurant, you should try their regular menu. It hosts a variety of British and European inspired cuisine with a focus on what’s in season. The experience starts as soon as you enter Ferguson’s and the first thing you see after being greeted by one of the friendly staff is the open view kitchen with chef’s busily preparing food. This is great as it give you the chance to see David, Mark & Tom hard at work. It is obvious from David and his kitchen brigade that there is passion about the food they are preparing and serving.

The seasonal menus are culinary masterpieces which look so inviting on your plate. The flavours, textures and presentation do not disappoint and are so worthy of their mention in the Michelin Guide 2016 that David and the team have worked hard to achieve. Ferguson’s Restaurant is a converted warehouse set in the heart of Rugby’s town centre. Simply decorated with bare brick grey & white walls, wooden floors and soft lighting there is also seating available upstairs so has the capacity to accommodate 60 diners. This brasserie style restaurant offers modern British and European cuisine using quality seasonal & local produce. The walled courtyard is ideal to sit out in during the summer months. 10 things you might not know about wasps Wasps… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures. • There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual Ruby-Tailed Wasp. • The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) • While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather antisocial. • They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. • The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. • While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil,

• • • •

for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer. While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black. Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest. An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year.

Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Try your local council first, as many provide pest control services. If yours doesn’t, search online or in the Yellow Pages for pest control companies. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help.

A Good Read That Summer in Ischia by Penny Fenny

Ischia: an Italian island in the bay of Naples. When Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena, inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. When one of their

young charges goes missing they immediately fall under suspicion and after that summer they never see each other again. Twenty-five years later Liddy, back in England, is walking her dog on the beach when she sees a young woman who looks like Helena. But it can’t be. It turns out to be Allie, her old best friend’s 23-year-old daughter. As she befriends her the mysteries surrounding the events of that summer in Ischia start to unravel. Her mother never talked much about that summer so Allie travels to Ischia to find out for herself. The action switches between location and time periods as Fenny unveils the events that changed so many lives. Her descriptions of Ischia are truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read.

Hillcrest Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Group The Hillcrest RDA Group was formed in 1994 to provide somewhere safe for disabled riders from the Daventry area to come each week and learn to ride. It began taking rides at Hillcrest Farm Riding School, just outside Priors Marston. The initial intake of riders were brought each week on a Tuesday from the Daventry Tertiary College by a social worker and included our longest standing rider Peter. Lee joined a couple of years later and these two gentlemen still ride with the group today. The group relies solely on the support of volunteers, who provide the instruction, leaders and side helpers for the riders. Gina Collins, one of the original helpers continues as treasurer of the Group. The Hillcrest Group was initially run by Jeannie Eastwood until her death in 2005. Lessons now take place at Woodbine Stables in Grandborough, which is ideally located and provides a range of wonderful horses and ponies, highly suitable for the riders, as they have given them the confidence to learn new skills. Around 2009 instructor Clare Grant was asked by Social Services if the group could provide another RDA session and the Wednesday group was born. Lessons have continued twice weekly, with two groups of five to six riders coming each week.

The riders disabilities are quite varied, but all have come on tremendously with their riding, coordination, verbal communication and interaction. Within the hourly lessons the riders work with their instructors and side helpers to develop their understanding of commands and use of their arms and legs. The mounted games sessions at the end are always tremendous fun for everyone involved and a great competitive spirit is shown. In addition to the weekly lessons we occasionally are able to take the riders for extra activities, which have included holidays away and carriage driving sessions. We are always looking for volunteer helpers to join either the Tuesday or Wednesday lessons, if interested please call: 07710 770594.

International Left Handers’ Day August 13th Since 1976, sinistromanual people the world over have been celebrating their ‘right’ to be left handed - see what I did there?! Even though around 13% of the world’s population are left-handed they are, as one disgruntled leftie put it, “the most discriminated against minority” around! No one knows for sure why a person is left-handed, but research suggests it is genetic and left-handedness does tend to run in families. As any left-hander knows, the world isn’t really designed to cater for them, so having a whole day dedicated to raising awareness of the everyday issues and challenges faced by the left-handed population is one way of changing that. In days gone by left-handers may have been forced to use their right hand (at school for example) but nowadays the world is becoming a friendlier place. Tools such as scissors, tin openers, vegetable peelers, knives and tape measures are all available for the non-right-handed. Left-handedness is controlled by the right side of the brain, which means that lefties are likely to be creative - excelling in music, the arts and media. They are also inclined to be good at ball sports and at anything requiring hand-to-eye co-ordination. Though being left-handed might once have been considered a disability, today’s lefties refuse to let it hold them back. “I may be left-handed,” says one, “But I’m always right.” I’m not going to argue!

Wimbledon Facts Wimbledon fortnight is the annual event which enthuses even non-tennis-lovers.

Here are some Wimbledon facts to muse on as you enjoy the matches. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass, which is cut to exactly 8mm for the competition. There is a strict dress code. Players must dress in mainly white clothing and umpires request them to comply. Even Roger Federer was asked to change his shoes because they had orange soles! There are 250 ball boys and girls (known as BBGs) at Wimbledon. Their average age is 15. They are all volunteers selected from participating schools. Historically only boys were selected but in 1977 girls were used for the first time though it was only in 1985 they were allowed to appear on centre court. More than 50 000 tennis balls used at Wimbledon every year! 700 or so go missing when they accidentally fly into the crowd. Balls are replaced every 7-9 games, and those not in use are stored in special refrigerated containers to make sure they are kept in peak condition.

Wimbledon is synonymous with strawberries and more than 140 000 tubs will be consumed by spectators this year. Players on the other hand prefer bananas for energy and will consume around 15000 of them!

July/August Gardening Tips July • •

• •

• •

Here comes summer (hopefully!!) Regularly dead-head bedding plants and flowering perennials to keep continuous blooms so you can sit and enjoy once all of your jobs in the garden are done. Keep new plants wellwatered, use water from water butts if possible as it’s free, hoe off or dig out weeds on a regular basis. Plants are now safe to go outdoors if they have been in for the winter months now that it is warm and there is no further threat of frosts. Apply a liquid summer lawn fertiliser to feed it especially if a spring feed was not given. A feed and weed product can be useful if there are weeds present in the lawn, this will kill off the weeds but not the grass. Mow regularly unless we have a drought, set the mower at a higher level if it is really hot to help prevent the lawn drying out and turning brown. Water thoroughly at the base of the plant once or twice a week rather than little and often, this will encourage plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface and it will save you time. Containers and hanging baskets do need watering every day though as a lot of water is lost when it drips out the bottom. Don’t forget to pick courgettes as they will soon transform into marrows!! Plant out sprouting broccoli, winter cabbages, hardy cauliflowers, kale, leeks and brussel sprouts. Keep ponds topped up and clear algae, blanket weed and fallen leaves regularly to prevent the water from going murky. It’s a good time of year to paint woodwork and pressure wash any moss and algae off decking to prevent slipping.

August •

• •

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year, watering is essential to keep plants blooming, but water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer so use sparingly ensuring hanging baskets and tubs take priority. Prune summer-flowering shrubs and wisteria. Collect seeds and cuttings from your favourite plants and have a go at growing them for next year, store in the greenhouse or potting shed in fresh compost. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready so that they don’t go to seed and are wasted. Keep sowing lettuce, salad leaves and radish seeds as these will continue to grow, radishes are very satisfying as they come through very quick. Plant out summer/autumn cauliflowers early in the month for an autumn harvest. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable plot and all your pots and containers. Little and often with a small garden fork or hoe will stop them getting out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground and take up space for other plants. If you use a hoe this will cut the weeds just below the surface and you can leave out on a sunny day to dry out and die in the warmth before putting on the compost heap. Now is a great time to start planning next year’s display of bulbs for the spring time. Tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus can all be planted now to ensure a fabulous display next year. So out with the BBQ and enjoy some time in the garden with maybe a glass of wine or two relaxing in your favourite chair, after all you deserve it !!

Five Tips for Camping Novices

Don’t travel too far. If it’s your first family camping trip it’s probably best to try a couple of local test excursions, particularly if you have young children. That way if unforeseen problems crop up it’s not too difficult to get back home, even in the middle of the night! Consider taking along other children or camping with friends. Children in a group tend to occupy each other which will leave more time for the adults to relax. Pack a couple of board games and books, just in case the novelty of camping wears off after a while, or for when the kids are worn out and need some quiet time. Pack a first aid kit. Include pain and cough relievers, bug spray and plasters. Also don’t forget the kidfriendly food and snacks. Don’t over-schedule. Try playing it by ear. Building a campfire, bug hunting and pond dipping can make for a gentle pleasant afternoon. A camping trip is a chance to get back to basics in more ways than one.

FOOD FESTIVAL

Northampton Winter Food Festival is a new premium event for Northamptonshire. Created by the team behind the highly successful Towcester Food Festival, it will be a celebration of artisan food and drink with up to 100 stalls, chef demonstrations, tasting workshops and a street food market. With capacity for 10,000 visitors over two days, Northampton Winter Food Festival takes place under cover at The County Ground. It will capture the essence of Towcester but with extra yummy, winter treats and foodie gifts in the run-up to Christmas. We are working with the organisers as their official media partner to supply the food guide as we have done the last 3 years at The Towcester Food Festival. With the run up to Christmas, this quality event guide is being hand delivered to 15,000 homes, 1,000 copies to local businesses and 4,000 for show guides. With 68 pages this A5 colour magazine will be full of local businesses and information on the participants and events to be held at the festival.

Off to Uni? So you got the grades and you’re off to university. It’s a bit daunting but we have some survival tips.

Learn to learn – Many young people struggle with the faster-pace of study and also the fact that learning is now their own responsibility. Read Andy Northedge’s The Good Study Guide before term starts. It aims to help you learn how to sort, process and recall new information. There are separate guides for the arts and sciences.

It’s good to talk - If problems occur, talk to your lecturer or tutor directly as soon as the problem arises. Don’t wait until the day before an assignment is due!

Take the initiative – Make the most of tutorials. Go in armed with any questions and thoughts you might have. The more you put into university study, the more you’ll get out of it.

Acknowledge disabilities - If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty like dyslexia, make yourself known to the Student Learning Service. They offer support and run advice sessions.

Acclimatise – If you’re moving a fair distance from home try to spend a weekend in your new area during the summer. Familiarise yourself with the transport system and the local amenities so it won’t seem as strange when term starts.

Money, money, money – Think about how you’ll manage. Talk to your parents or a trusted adult about independent living. Older people have been through similar situations even if they didn’t attend university themselves. Make new friends - Attend ‘welcome’ events and sign up for a few clubs. But don’t over-commit yourself in these early days because you’ll have a lot to deal with. In summary - Get organised, work hard and don’t forget to enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it.
