YOUR SECOND HOME What makes the Village unique is the social connection that builds relationships between members and employees, through rich and rewarding experiences. Don’t forget to ‘like’ Village Health Clubs & Spas on Facebook, where you’ll be privy to fitness information and Village events—everything Village!

This atmosphere creates a sense of community and we hear from our members that this is why they call the Village their second home. Together we make the Village a place that is comfortable and enjoyable for all our members. To make the Village the very best it can be we rely on feedback from our members. Our open door policy makes us available to questions, compliments, suggestions, and—of course—concerns. This feedback shows us that you care about your clubs and we want to make sure that we are doing everything possible to provide you with a safe, clean, and stress-free environment.

At the request of our members, we would like to revisit some simple Village Health Club & Spa etiquette tips to make sure each visit to the Village is exceptional. Please see my short article outlining these tips on page three! In good health, Greg Nakagawa GENERAL MANAGER, GAINEY VILLAGE HEALTH CLUB & SPA

19th Annual Jingle Bell Triathlon at Gainey T R I AT H L O N

Last December 24, adults and kids participated in the 19th Annual Jingle Bell Triathlon at the Gainey Village. Triathletes swam 400 yards in the pool, rode bikes for either ten or five (cruiser division) miles, and finished with a three-mile run. It was an invigorating day for everyone.

Making the better life

BETTER

The number one complaint we hear from our members is about inappropriate phone usage. Out of respect for our members we ask all members to refrain from texting or talking on the phone while working out. Each of our clubs have designated areas for you to take a phone conversation so you do not disturb others. If you are on the selectorized or weight benches, please do not text, regardless of whether somebody else is waiting to work in.

To be considerate to other members, when in the Greg Nakagawa studios, please arrive at least five minutes early so as not to disrupt a class in progress. If you MUST leave class early, please make the instructor aware prior to class starting and leave quietly so you do not disrupt the rest of the class. Out of fairness to all members, please do not save seats for your friends in class. Unfortunately, if they are not present, then they have given up their spot in class.

For safety reasons it is important to keep your gym bag in a locker or cubby, not on the floor, as it is a tripping hazard for other members. This includes locker rooms, locker room benches, and all other common areas of the club. Also, although we recommend not bringing valuables into the club, if you do we ask that you put them in a locker while you work out.

In the weight rooms, please replace all of the equipment after use. This includes dumbbells, weight plates, bands, medicine balls, and all other equipment.

We want to make your Village Club feel just like home. To accomplish this, we wanted to remind all our members of simple Village Health Club etiquette. If we all strive to respect each other and do our part, we can make the club experience better for everyone.

spring 2018 BET TERLIFE | 3

To help keep the club clean and sanitary, please wipe down your equipment before using and after you are done with it. We have gym wipes, disinfectant spray, and paper towels for you to use to make it easier for you to clean off the equipment. Another simple way to help keep the club clean is to please return all used towels to their proper bins and make sure your trash is placed in the garbage cans provided throughout the property.

Last, but certainly not least, we live in the desert. Please help us conserve water when shaving or brushing your teeth by turning off the faucet when not in use.

The Mediterranean diet has long been recognized for its fresh, real ingredients and heart-healthy benefits.

THE

MEDITERRANEAN

LIFESTYLE

Your health is influenced by what you eat, so eating foods that maximize vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients is vital to your health. Kristina Hallberg, Gainey Village RDN

The Mediterranean diet is based on fruits, vegetables, grains (mostly whole), olive oil, legumes like beans and lentils, nuts, seeds, more seafood than meat and poultry, moderate portions of cheese and yogurt, and herbs and spices—as well as on being physically active. The Mediterranean diet is not a regimented plan or set of restrictions, but rather a way of eating. The way you eat also makes an impact in your health: research has shown that, traditionally, more time is spent eating and savoring food and sharing it in the company of others in Mediterranean countries.

6 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

Harvard Health research demonstrates convicting evidence and has shown that this lifestyle is effective at warding off heart attack, stroke, and other causes of premature death, amongst other benefits. You probably get the biggest benefit by adopting these principles early in life, but studies show that making the switch during midlife is beneficial as well. Following these Mediterranean diet principles can help you stay healthy and reduce your risk of obesity. Remember that you want to be filling your plate with fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like olive oil, fiber-rich whole grains, legumes, and fish—and enjoy moderate amounts of red wine. Interested in learning more, receiving nutrition coaching, or enjoying motivation and personalized nutrition guidance? Contact Kristina Hallberg at khallberg@dmbclubs.com.

Here are 5 tips to give you a jump start today!

1 2 3 4 5

Eat more fruits and vegetables daily. Choose fiber-rich whole grains instead of refined breads and pastas. Substitute wild fish for red meat at least twice per week. Snack on hummus and fresh vegetables. Use olive oil or balsamic-based salad dressings instead of cream-based dressings.

Meet

PETER

the new CAMELBACK VILLAGE ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR

In March of 2017 I took over for Judi Buterbaugh as Activities Director at Camelback Village. I have been working for the Village for about four and a half years now. I started out as a personal trainer and have gotten to know a ton of wonderful people—both members and employees. The biggest thing that I have learned as Activities Director is just how many different opportunities and activities the Village offers to its members. We have everything from A to Z, literally: Aqua-fit and Zumba classes—and so many in between. Between the four clubs, it seems as though there is always some sort of event going on. Whether it be a member party, a happy hour outing, a hike, a tennis mixer, a ski trip, or any number of other activities, if you can’t find something to do it just means you’re not looking. The latest addition to the list of activities offered at the Village Clubs is golf. We have partnered with Troon Golf to offer exclusive discounts and benefits that you can only get by being a Village member. The best part about it is that it’s FREE. It’s already included in your membership—all you have to do is sign up online. Along with discounts on golf, we are also offering exclusive golf clinics and instruction with some of the valley’s top golf instructors at an incredible rate only available to Village members. Let’s say that you are more interested in the social aspect of the club. Well, good news! We have tons of programs for you as well. Every month at Camelback we sponsor a member Happy Hour to show our appreciation to our members. Since I started as Activities Director we have been to a variety of local spots, including The Whining Pig, Vines & Hops, Brat Haus, The Phoenician, and The Porch. We will continue to venture out to local hot spots in the future.

Are you a car lover? You should come join the guys and gals of the Porsche Club. They meet the first Friday of every month in the V-Lounge at Camelback and then

Peter Love, Camelback Village Activities Director

Every spring we venture out to spring training baseball games as a club; this year we had three different opportunities to experience one of the most exciting times of year for all baseball fans. Last year we also rented out a suite at the Cubs vs. Diamondbacks game. Seventy-four other Village members and I took in a great game and had a very memorable experience sitting in the Legends Suite at Chase Field. Do you want to focus on your fitness goals? We kick off every new year with our Greatest Loser Challenge. It’s a team-based challenge that pushes you to shed some of those holiday pounds. Are you in “good” shape and want to push it to the next level? We offer the very best and most well-educated personal trainers around. All of our trainers have degrees in Exercise Science or Kinesiology, as well as at least one of five nationally recognized certifications. They can help push you out of your comfort zone and get results. Are you just a glutton for punishment? Join us this Memorial Day as we participate in the 2018 Murph Challenge. So whether you are a Village member because you want to focus on your fitness, improve your golf or tennis game, or meet new people, there are endless options for you. I didn’t even mention our squash, fencing, swimming, basketball, or racquetball programs, not to mention the countless camps and programs that are put on by our Kids’ Club. My advice to members is get involved! Check out the flyers that are posted around the clubs. Pick up one of our monthly activities guides. Everyone here is striving to provide our members with new and exciting programs and experiences as often as we can. We thrive on giving our members the best experience possible and offering unique programs and opportunities to interact with each other as well as with our staff. Like I said before, if you can’t find something to do you’re just not trying. I would encourage all of our members try one new thing every month. The people you will meet and experiences you will have, if they are anything like mine, will be amazing.

spring 2018 BET TERLIFE | 7

We are also offering monthly technology workshops to help our members better understand and be able to use all the new gadgets that are on the market today. The second Tuesday of every month, the guys from Groovy-Tek are at Camelback ready to answer all of your questions.

venture out to explore a new restaurant. They often have cars from local Porsche dealerships on hand for their members to look at and explore.

MURPH CHALLENGE

at the CAMELBACK VILLAGE

The Murph Challenge is a workout that is done nationwide every Memorial Day in honor of fallen soldier Mike Murphy. The Murph Challenge is the official annual fundraiser of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, presented by Forged®. It is also one of the primary means of funding for the foundation on an annual basis. Over the last three years, Forged® has raised nearly $800,000 for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation through The Murph Challenge campaign. With such overwhelming support and success, the Foundation was able to add four additional scholarships in 2016, and can now award 22 or more scholarships each year! The workout is as follows: 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another 1-mile run for time. For the hardcore people the workout can also be done wearing a 20-pound weight vest. Modifications can be made based on fitness levels and strength. Please come out and help support a great cause as well as testing yourself both physically and mentally. This event will push your limits.

About Lt. Michael P. Murphy

Moving away from the protective mountain rocks, he knowingly exposed himself to increased enemy gunfire. This deliberate and heroic act deprived him of cover and made him a target for the enemy. While continuing to be fired upon, Murphy made contact with the SOF Quick Reaction Force at Bagram Air Base and requested assistance. He calmly provided his unit’s location and the size of the enemy force while requesting immediate support for his team. At one point, he was shot in the back, causing him to drop the transmitter. Murphy picked it back up, completed the call, and continued firing at the enemy, who were closing in. Severely wounded, Lt. Murphy returned to his cover position with his men and continued the battle. Lt. Murphy fought on, allowing one member of his team (Marcus Luttrell) to escape before he was killed. For his selfless actions, Lt. Michael Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 27, 2007. We honor his sacrifice and memory through The Murph Challenge. Find out more about Michael Murphy at the Memorial Foundation created in his name. Contact: Peter Love, plove@dmbclubs.com.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL) was the officer in charge of a four-man SEAL element in support of Operation Red Wings, tasked with finding a key anti-coalition militia commander near Asadabad, Afghanistan. Shortly after inserting into the objective area, the SEALs were spotted by three goat herders who were initially detained and then released. It is believed the goat herders immediately reported the SEALs’ presence to Taliban fighters.

A fierce gun battle ensued on the steep face of the mountain between the SEALs and a much larger enemy force. Despite the intensity of the firefight and suffering grave gunshot wounds himself, Murphy is credited with giving his own life to save the lives of his teammates. Murphy, intent on making contact with headquarters, but realizing this would be impossible in the extreme terrain where they were fighting, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own life moved into the open, where he could gain a better position to transmit a call to get help for his men.

MR.

FIX IT

Maintenance Associate Diego Gonzalez is climbing more than one kind of ladder at the Village.

14 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

Diego Gonzalez started working part-time at the Camelback Village towel desk five years ago. Managers quickly noticed his incredible work ethic, and he soon added a part-time gig with the Maintenance department, where he now works full-time. And about once a month, Diego also runs the whole club, through the Manager On Duty training program for standout talent. On a regular day, Diego starts work at 7:30 and leaves at “2:00, 3:00, 4:00, or whenever I get done with what I’m working on,” he says. “When I’m building something, I tend to get carried away.” At age 23, Diego credits his two kids for his drive and ambition. “When you have kids, you can’t quit,” he says. We sat down with Diego in the Camelback’s V Lounge to talk about his Village experiences. During our talk, Diego helped a co-worker overcome a language barrier and fixed a barstool. It’s obvious why the Village considers him a valuable problem solver, and why he has a big future with the company if he wants one.

the village: How did you get started at the Village?

diego gonzalez: My sister used to work at the towel desk. She brought me in when I was finishing up high school. I was also working part-time making stones for construction sites. After a few months at the Village, my manager saved me from myself when he noticed how cut up my hands were. That’s when I started working part-time in Maintenance.

Why did you move into Maintenance? At the towel desk, I was always hustling and wanting to do more. I like to stay busy and I’ve always been pretty good with my hands. My dad ran a landscaping company and still works as a handyman even though he’s retired, and he taught me a lot over the years. I always shadowed him when he was fixing things. Did you ever think about working with your dad? I really admire my dad and I always wanted to do the same thing, but I just want to do it on my own. He wanted me to take over his business, but I didn’t want a handout. Plus, we bump heads a lot because we’re both pretty stubborn about things. What do you like best about working at the Village? I never want to be stuck in a job where I have to do the same thing every day, so the Village is perfect for me. I never know what to expect. One day I’ll be ripping out carpet, another day I’ll be fixing an electrical system, and the next day I’ll be fixing something in the Kids’ Club. How do you know how to do all this stuff? I love learning, so if I don’t know something I just figure out how to do it. What’s the most difficult experience you’ve had at work? Two years ago a giant storm came through and flooded the club. No one really knew what to do and we finally decided to shut down the building. It was the only time I ever thought about quitting. But we all pitched in and grabbed buckets while we waited for contractors to come out and help. It was intense. How do you like the days when you’re tapped to be the Manager on Duty? Being a manager is a lot like working in Maintenance, because you don’t ever know what you’re getting into and you have to think on your feet. One day I had to deal with a member who had a restraining order against another member, who was also in the club. They almost got into a fistfight, but I was able to separate them. I called the general manager, who told me who was allowed to stay and who had to go. What do you want to do later in life? One day I want to go into real estate. I want to fix up houses and sell them. I’m learning so much about building codes and how things work, like electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, pool maintenance, and other things like that. Do you work out at the club? I used to come every Sunday, but everyone kept asking me to fix something, so I could rarely get a workout in. For now I’m sticking to hiking Camelback Mountain, but that could change in the summer. Have you made a lot of friends at The Village? Definitely. Both members and co-workers have become my friends. The members are great because they always come up and introduce themselves. The Village is like a second home to me. This place hugs you… and it doesn’t let you go. Do you think you’ll be here for a long time? As long as I keep learning and growing, I have lots of reasons to stay. And I’m definitely not scared of commitment.

ACNE

AN INFLAMMATION DISORDER

Ashley Lew, The Spa at DC Ranch Village Lead Aesthetician

The correlation between dairy, sugar, and acne. There are two main factors behind acne: hormones and inflammation. Hormones put the skin glands into overdrive, resulting in excessive sebum (oil) production and skin cell growth. The combination of sebum and dead skin cells is an ideal recipe for blocked pores.

The link between hormones caused by our diet and acne is clear. Our diet influences sex hormones like testosterone, IGF-1, and insulin, which promote acne. The biggest factors affecting your hormones are the glycemic load of your diet and the amount of dairy products you eat.

Acne is a disorder of the turnover of skin cells, called keratinization. Improper skin cell turnover leads to retained cells, which block the oil glands and pores and trap protein and sebum under the skin. These proteins and oils become food for P. acnes, the bacteria that cause acne.

The bacteria living in your pores cause inflammation, and dairy products such as milk can promote inflammation as well, increasing breakouts. Milk proteins like whey and casein are often added to skim milk to make it taste less watery. Both whey and casein release a hormone similar to insulin, called IGF-1, which is known to trigger breakouts. So you may be better off substituting a plant-based milk the next time you order a post-workout smoothie.

18 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

Diet and nutrition make up about 25% of the picture when it comes to acne. The other 75% is influenced by hormones, stress, sleep, one’s skincare regimen, and the environment and climate in which you live. Overall, promoting healthy skin with diet is all about adopting healthy nutritional habits and reducing inflammation.

Acne Triggers: Dairy and Sugar Dairy: Cow’s milk can spark or worsen breakouts in some people. The culprit is hormones used to encourage growth in cows. Hormones in dairy products increase levels of male hormones called androgens. Androgens increase sebum production, which leads to acne.

While milk and ice cream have been associated with acne, yogurt and cheese don’t seem to have the same effect because of the live digestive enzymes (probiotics) that these forms of dairy contain. In fact, the probiotics found in yogurt can help minimize breakouts and heal the skin, because probiotics are known to help calm inflammation. Simple Sugars: Sugar aggravates the two major causes of acne: hormones and inflammation. All acne is hormonal to some degree. Because of genetics, acne-prone skin is sensitive to androgens (male sex hormones). They increase sebum production and skin cell growth.

As you eat carbohydrates, specifically sugar, your blood sugar levels increase. The pancreas responds by releasing insulin, a hormone that takes sugar into cells and reduces blood sugar levels.

Zinc helps to prevent acne by creating an inhospitable environment for the growth of P. acnes. It also helps calm skin irritated by breakouts. Zinc is found in turkey, almonds, Brazil nuts, and wheat germ.

Sugar promotes inflammation. Inflammation depletes antioxidants and leaves the skin vulnerable to inflammation, making it more likely that you will experience some breakouts.

Antioxidants Vitamins C and E have a calming effect on the skin. They work in synergy. There are many amazing Vitamin C & E serums available at The Spas at the Village.

Foods with a high glycemic index appear to cause acne breakouts in some people as well. Foods that fall under this category break down quickly during digestion. They include white bread, potatoes, and other forms of white starches. Simple sugars increase insulin levels, which leads to a series of reactions that increase androgen levels; increased androgens stimulate sebum production and clog pores.

Acne-Fighting Foods

Natural sources of Vitamin C include oranges, lemons, grapefruit, papayas, and tomatoes. You can obtain Vitamin E from sweet potatoes, nuts, olive oil, sunflower seeds, avocados, broccoli, and leafy green vegetables. Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin that is caused by many factors. When you limit dairy and sugar intake and increase the amount of fruits, veggies, nuts, and lean proteins in your diet, along with using a proper home care regimen, routine facials, and adequate hydration, you can substantially minimize if not eliminate acne.

Diets rich in fruits and vegetables are good for the skin. Healthy foods assist in reducing inflammation and decrease the likelihood of breakouts. Here are some of the big players when it comes to healthy skin: Vitamin A helps regulate the skin’s cell regeneration cycle, so less acne-causing protein and oil gets trapped. It is the main ingredient in Accutane (an oral medication prescribed by dermatologists for severe acne sufferers); Retin-A, a topical prescription; and over-the-counter retinol creams. The Spa at DC Ranch Village has several stellar retinol creams by PCA, Jan Marini, Skin Medica, and Intraceuticals. Excellent food sources of Vitamin A include fish oil, salmon, carrots, spinach, and broccoli.

KIDS

WHY

PHYSICAL

FITNESS IS IMPORTANT during early childhood years

As adults we can all relate to expressions such as “Pump it Up,” “Target Heart Rate,” “MyZone Challenge,” and “Resistance Training,” but do these terms apply to young children? Why is physical fitness a concern during early childhood? Don’t children get all the physical activity they need just by being children? Anita Nocernio-Chase, Camelback Village Youth Services Director

Unfortunately, statistics show otherwise. The number of overweight children has doubled in the last decade. The first signs of arteriosclerosis are showing up as early as age five, along with elevated cholesterol and hypertension. Fortunately, there is good news. When kids are active, their bodies can do the things they want and need them to do. Why? Because regular exercise provides these benefits:

20 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

• strong muscles and bones

Ways to incorporate activity into your child’s day include: • Find an activity that you like to do together, such as swimming, walking to the park, riding bikes, etc. • Make sure the activity is appropriate for the child’s age. Seven- and eight-year-olds are not ready for weight training but love soccer, dodgeball, and bike riding. • Plan ahead and make time to be active together.

• weight control

• Provide a safe environment. Make sure equipment provided is age appropriate and the location is safe.

• decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes

• Provide active toys and limit screen time.

• better sleep

• Play with your child. Learn something new together.

• a better outlook on life

• Do not overdo it. Make sure you and your child listen to your bodies, and be sure you both drink plenty of water.

Healthy, physically active kids also are more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful. And physical competence builds self-esteem at every age.

• Follow a balanced diet to encourage lifelong healthy eating habits. The Village offers some exciting activities for young children such as Music and Movement, Yoga, Capoeira, swim lessons, and many more. Please see your Activities Director or Youth Services Director for additional information.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT? Family engagement has different meanings for different people. It incorporates an ongoing partnership between caretakers and families. Programs that engage and involve families in meaningful ways, and families who actively support their child’s learning and development, work together to encourage children to thrive. Why family engagement is valuable

Family engagement at the Village

Family engagement in early learning can benefit children, parents, families, teachers, and program quality in various ways.

We have begun monthly family engagement activities to promote healthy relationships between parents and their children, as well as with the caretakers here at the Village.

• Family engagement helps with the growth and development of caring and empathy, by watching adults have positive and healthy interactions. • Family engagement during the first years of life can support a preschool-aged child’s readiness for school and ongoing academic and lifelong success. •F amily engagement can help build vital lifelong relationships that promote additional development and learning at home, including expanding children’s vocabulary and encouraging their efforts.

IMMUNITY

What’s your IMMUNE SYSTEM RATING?

22 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

In the game of life, a robust immune system is your body’s best defense. We all know that our immune system is in the business of fighting off everything from colds to cancer. It is in our best interest to make sure that our immune systems are not degraded by bad behaviors like smoking, drinking to excess, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise. But one more thing needs to be taken into account, and that is aging.

In a recent article from the Harvard Medical Journal, scientists stated that some of our immune cells die off much faster than they did when we were younger. Problems occur when we run into germs that our immune system can’t “remember” how to fight because those cells don’t stick around as long as they used to. You don’t have to take this information lying down. You can do something about it. But first take the Immune Buster vs Booster Quiz on the next page.

Immune System Busters

Immune System Boosters

Lack of regular exercise

Regular moderate exercise

Overweight

Healthy weight

Eating more fat & sugar than you should

Moderate fat & sugar consumption Active stress management

Constant stress

Socially engaged

Social isolation

In doing the research for this article, without fail, the number one immune system enhancer on everyone’s list was exercise—and it doesn’t have to be heavy-duty exercise like running marathons, but moderate-intensity exercise that virtually everyone can do. Walking for 20 – 30 minutes 3 – 5 times per week will have amazing benefits, especially if you are currently classified as a couch potato. The most important thing about the exercise that you engage in is that it must be regular, not sporadic.

Why does exercise have such a positive impact on your immune system? It stimulates blood flow. It heats up your body, which can kill off disease-causing bacteria. Exercise is an incredible mood elevator—top floor please! Exercise also helps you burn more calories and thus helps lower your weight into the healthy zone.

Embrace your boosters to create not only a good defense in your life game but a dynamic offense as well.

TECHNOLOGY

IN THE GYM

Making the health club a rich and rewarding experience for all to enjoy while adapting to our technology-based world.

24 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

Aaron Maxwell, DC Ranch Village Fitness Director

In today’s rapidly changing, technology-based environment, we find ourselves faced with many different obstacles as well as advantages which have changed the workout experience and life in general. At times, technology—such as cell phones, tablets, and smart watches, to name a few—may enrich our workouts and at other times may distract us (or others) from enjoying a workout. At this point, many or most of us should have noticed the signs, stickers, and reminders to not use our cell phones while working out. You may also have noticed that approximately 80% of health club users usually have their phones on them during a workout! So perhaps the question we should be asking ourselves is “How do I ensure that if I have and am using my phone, tablet, or smartwatch, it does not inhibit others from enjoying their workouts?”

There are times when taking a personal phone call is appropriate in the facility, but there are locations in the gym where it can be distracting, or inhibit our fellow members from using the equipment or enjoying some personal time to pursue their fitness goals. Some of these areas are the weight room, cardio floor space, yoga studios, group fitness classes, Pilates studios, and spa areas. Even texting or emailing on our phones in these areas while sitting on a machine or occupying these spaces can become a distraction or hindrance to others who may want to use the equipment as well—or work out free from distracted members not aware of their surroundings.

Let’s all do our best to shut out the outside noise and distractions, which will allow us to focus on ourselves and encourage others to do the same.

Let us all be aware that although our world has changed and technology is great, we must not permit these devices to interfere with some of the important reasons most of us are coming to the club. One idea is to use your phone in airplane mode at the gym, if you have playlists downloaded, to rid yourself of the temptation to text, call, and get on social media. Life’s better at the Village—so let’s live life to the fullest while here, and do our best to shut out the outside noise and distractions. This will allow us to focus on ourselves and encourage others to do the same.

spring 2018 BET TERLIFE | 25

Many members stream music on their smartphones or have their playlists stored on them, as the world has mostly switched from MP3 players to all-in-one devices with Internet capability. It’s becoming more difficult for most of us to determine whether or not someone is switching a song, or starting up a playlist—or using their phone to post their workout selfie to their favorite social media site. The responsibility lays with each one of us to be cognizant that if we are using our phones or devices we must not monopolize a piece of equipment or distract in a space where others have come to relax and free themselves from outside demands and the stresses of our lives. The Village is a place where all members should be able to enjoy themselves as freely as possible from outside distractions that—if we stop and think about it—can wait for an hour or so, just as they did in the not-so-distant past. Our lives will never be the same; however, we can find a balance where we strive to not have those very devices that have made our lives so much easier become a hindrance to our healthy way of living.

TENNIS MODE

WHAT

ARE YOU IN?

Hitting the correct tennis shots from the proper spot on the tennis court is the difference between one level and the next. Will White, Camelback Village Tennis Director

Most recreational tennis players choose their shot based on what they want to do, regardless of where they are positioned on the court. The result of this reactionary decision-making is usually a high number of unforced errors, which are a main reason why players lose tennis matches. If I make less errors than you do…the result is a WIN for me. To decrease unforced errors in your tennis game you will have to master the different “Modes” of tennis. The four modes of tennis are rallying, defensive, forcing, and attacking. As you read through this article, you will learn how each mode affects your tennis game and how you can recognize when they are occurring.

26 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

Rallying Mode: Be consistent and hit UP on the ball Rallying: This mode is the most common in tennis. Generally, when playing a tennis point, you are keeping the ball in play against your opponent. “Just hit one more shot than your opponent,” is what my coach would always say to

me. This is so true against any tennis opponent. The first observation when playing a point with your opponent is to see how many balls they can hit until they miss. If they cannot rally more than two or three shots in a row, then you have found a way to beat them. The RALLY mode, put simply, is anytime that you are keeping the ball in play, and for most of that time. You are hitting UP on the ball.

Defensive Mode: Get the ball OVER and be aware of possible grip changes Defensive: When you are in the defensive mode, the ONLY thing you need to think about is getting the ball back into play. This is not the time to try fancy or high-risk shots. Your opponent has just put you into a position on the court where they are hoping that you miss, so find a way to get the ball from your side of the net to the theirs. Defensive mode shots are mostly learned by experience. Playing many matches and being in tough spots forces you to learn how to change your grips in order to direct the ball to your opponent’s side of the net.

Forcing Mode: Hit LEVEL through the ball and keep your feet inside the court Forcing: Forcing is the most popular mode when playing a point. When you are forcing a shot to your opponent, most of the time you are hitting through the ball and the trajectory is lower than your rally ball. The shot is hit with some force in order to take time away from your opponent. Generally, forcing shots are hit hard, deep, low, and to a corner of the court. The outcome you are expecting is a forcing error by your opponent—that they could not “handle” your shot. Forcing shots need to be hit INSIDE the tennis court, not from behind the baseline. Hitting from anywhere but inside the court will result in a high number of unforced errors.

The other one percent of attacking shots could be a player’s serve. The serve is a shot hit above your shoulder and head, and with the proper technique it can be a way to attack your opponent. Attacking from anywhere besides close to the net will result in making unforced errors which is what we are trying to reduce as a player. Understanding which tennis mode you are in gives you the best advantage to reduce errors, which will force your opponent to make more errors. Next time you play a singles or doubles match, I challenge you to pay attention to what mode you are in when playing a point. Good luck!

Attacking Mode: Hit DOWN on the ball and keep CLOSE to the net Attacking: This mode is the most exciting. Shots in the attacking category are overheads, overheads off the bounce, high-ripping forehands, or basically any shot that can be hit above your shoulder and head area. The area where 99 percent of the attacking shots are hit is inside the service box. The closer to the net you are, the higher your chances of hitting your attacking shot in the court.

SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE

Doubles Rules

First Serve Percentage

Net Play/Movement

a. T he first serve percentage should be around 75 – 80 percent in order to set up the net player and create easier control of the service games.

a. T he most effective and simple way to move at the net is to think about “following the ball.”

b. T he type of serve should be a variety of kick and slice serves to create movement on the ball, which keeps the returner from simply redirecting the ball. c. S erving to the body or the inside stroke will take away many angles on the return and generally keep the ball over the middle of the court, which allows the net player to be more involved.

Returning the Ball

b. K eep the swing short and your feet moving forward into the return. This provides a simple way to be consistent and give a little more control to manipulate the serving team.

c. W hen at the net, DO NOT allow a ball to go across the middle of the court without attempting to hit it. As I like to say, “It should be more embarrassing to allow a ball to cross the middle without trying to hit it than to be passed down the line.” Warren Race, DC Ranch Village Tennis Professional wrace@dmbclubs.com

a. R eturning the ball in play is extremely important. The return does not have to be perfect, especially in the beginning of a match, but it is necessary to make the server and their partner play as many balls as possible.

b. F ollowing the ball and essentially placing yourself in front of the ball will take away the highest percentage of angles and give yourself a high chance at finishing the point at the net.

GOOD

NEIGHBORS

28 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

For this Chandler area family, the Ocotillo Village is another home close to home. “We were really excited when the Village opened so close to our house,” recalls Daryl Teo, an Intel engineer who found his way to Phoenix from Singapore via Minneapolis. “We can walk to the club in just seven minutes.”

The Village has become an anchor for the neighborhood, which the Teos have lived in since 2004. “We really didn’t get to know a lot of our neighbors until The Village opened,” Daryl says. “Now we see them all over town.”

The club’s opening in 2015 was a game changer for Daryl, his wife Michelle, and their four children. “We were taking our kids to Aspire Kids Sports Center and Daryl and I belonged to a gym that was about 15 minutes away by car,” Michelle says. “Now we can all enjoy the same place in a convenient location.”

We talked with the couple about the health club experience that literally fell into their own back yard.

We’ve gotten to know our neighbors more because of events at the Village. — Daryl Teo

the village: What did you know about the Village

before the Ocotillo Club opened? michelle teo: We’d always heard good things about the Village. We went online and the club looked like a nice place where our whole family could do activities. daryl teo: I had been to the DC Ranch Village before, when I trained for endurance events in Scottsdale and the McDowell Mountains. Do you still do endurance events? dt: I do triathlons, marathons, and ultramarathons, and usually compete in four to five races every year. I have a family history of heart disease and this keeps me out of trouble with my cardiologist! How do you train for those events? dt: I get my strength-training workouts in the classes at the Village. There’s a good variety of classes to choose from, with great instructors. I try to do these classes with my older girls, instead of on my own. The Village makes it easy to train and spend time with Michelle and the kids. There’s also TEAM Village, a multisport team at the Village, which is an added benefit for endurance athletes. It’s very nice to have a fantastic group of fellow athletes at the same gym to support, encourage, train with, and race with. What do you like to do at the club, Michelle? mt: I don’t have a fixed routine because there are so many options at the Village. I do a mix of about forty percent Yoga, Pilates, and Barre, and about sixty percent strength and cardio classes. I love the Boot Camps, Spin Classes, and 20/20/20s. Occasionally I’ll go to the spa for a massage and facial. Whenever I have some free time, there’s always something great to do!

mt: Our girls do a lot of the classes and work out in the cardio area. My oldest takes Spanish in school and enjoys practicing her skills with her bilingual employee friends.

S carlet’s mom Lisa Summers, Michelle Obama, and Scarlet Summers.

When do you get to go together as a family? mt: We take classes together on the weekends, and it helps motivate everyone to go. We have a lot of fun working out together and everyone feels good after getting a good workout in. You seem to take advantage of the health and social benefits of the Village... You know, the Village sets itself apart from other health clubs, not just because of the quality instructors and equipment, but also in its effort to bring members together by organizing social events. We try to attend these events whenever we can and have enjoyed hanging out with existing friends and making new ones. dt: We love being part of the Village. Our family has made many new friends there, and we run into them all the time. We’ve gotten to know our neighbors more because of events at the Village, and it really has brought the community together.

And what about your kids? dt: They all love to go and do their own thing. Our younger boys play tennis and swim in the summer, but they’ll often just go over to the Village to hang out with other kids in the Kids’ Club and participate in group games.

It sounds like the Village gives you a lot of flexibility… mt: That’s one of the best things about the Village—it’s right there when we need it. Daryl works at home when he’s not traveling, and the kids all have different schedules. It’s a lot easier knowing we can all just walk over when we want to instead of having to drive everyone different places.

WOMEN’S CONNECTIVITY AT THE VILLAGE It has been said that “sisterhood” is the most powerful force for women’s health. Not discounting you guys out there—you do use your “bro” power to make things happen—but it does come naturally to those of the female persuasion. Lisa Owens, DC Ranch Village Membership Director

In ancient times, women shared quite a bit: cared for babies, gathered food, and cooked meals together. In today’s culture, we can be somewhat individualized. Women are more isolated in modern society, in their homes, new to the area, separate from each other. A landmark study has found that women respond to stress differently than men. This fact has significant health implications. When people experience stress, the fight or flight response is triggered. The “tend and befriend” pattern of female bonds can relieve that stress hormone considerably.

30 | BET TERLIFE spring 2018

That is where the Village comes in…women and children connect at the Village in similar ways to our ancestors: to comfort each other, to share in our experiences. It is nourishing and even healing to be in each other’s presence. At the Village, we nurture these natural tendencies through our Kids’ Club, and through Group Fitness classes such as Pilates, Yoga, Spin, Zumba, and Barre, and all of these groups have subcultures that sustain and grow. Women are centers of family life, so we must keep strong and vital to provide sustenance to our families and friends. Women naturally share their experiences with other women and thus create a bond that is unilike any other we have in society.

When you refer a friend to the Village, you impart a portion of yourself, and extend that to the community. If you see someone new, welcome then as part of your Village family. Keep a lookout for our Women’s Group, coming up in the spring of 2018. You’ll want to be part of it. In the meantime, like our Facebook page, follow our Instagram, and subscribe to our blogs—all forms of connecting to other Village experiences. Consider that making and keeping friendships at the Village is the one of the most important ways to keep yourself healthy.

We love celebrating traditions and holidays at DC Ranch. This past December, we celebrated with a new tradition which included a special visit from Santa. He stopped by for some special story time with some of our smallest members. It was a wonderful new addition and we look forward to seeing him back in 2018.

Camelback Winter Party

Our 2017 winter holiday party was once again a great success. We had a wonderful turnout of members and guests. We did a little something different for this event and brought in aerialists to perform throughout the evening, to go along with the music, food, and dancing that we always provide. The performers did a wonderful job of entertaining and captivating the audience with a dizzying array of stunts. We hope you all enjoyed them as much as they enjoyed entertaining you for the evening.

In addition to our Snapchat account, there’s now a Village geofilter! What is a geofilter, you ask? It is a location-based filter that you can put on your Snapchat photos. There is a filter that you can use at all four clubs that is always available, and customized ones you can use during special events. The Mercedes Tournament one on this page is an example of what those custom filters may look like. Don’t worry—it won’t get in the way of your pictures with the cute little dog ears. You swipe for the geofilters after you take a snap, to add a little something extra special to it. This way, everyone will know where you’re taking that snap and it’ll remind you when you’re looking back at your snap memories.

Welcome to the Village Snap Family! We’re so glad to have you as part of our squad. What are you waiting for?
