This has been a four year project to find land that meets the needs of the tennis community in North Scottsdale. At the same time we have acquired space for a Hot Yoga studio to expand our yoga program. The hot yoga studio will have two restrooms, waiting area and lockers for storage. We will also provide ice and water to rehydrate during and after class. Another great feature is the option for natural light along with a black out system so you can select classes that will meet your individual interests. As we will want to control the size of some classes there will be a check-in numbering system to make sure the programs are not overcrowded. Once classes start we will not want to disturb the flow of the class. Therefore no one will be allowed entry into the studio once class begins. So, don’t be late! Between the three Village clubs we will be the largest yoga provider in Arizona. We will have hot yoga here and at Gainey Village and we have just introduced rooftop yoga at our Camelback Village location with an absolutely stunning view of Camelback Mountain in the background.

Spring Triathlons

The triathlon season starts in the spring and our triathletes didn’t seem to have missed a beat in the ‘off’ season. Village members participated in the Sedona Half Marathon, Phoenix Marathon, Ragnar Relay, Marquee and Leadman Triathlons, San Diego Triathlon, Rocky Point Triathlon, Ironman Cabo, Ironman 70.3 St George and St Croix, and Esprit de She Triathlon among many more. Looking towards the summer the most popular races will be Tempe International Triathlon, Deuces Wild Triathlon, Barn Burner, Mountain Man Triathlon, Boulder 70.3, Lake Stevens 70.3, Ironman Canada, Ironman Lake Tahoe, Ironman Coeur D’Alene, Ironman Nice, Skull Valley Road Ride, and the Tempe Triathlon (formerly Nathans).

The tournament that has all the bragging rights produced some amazing squash in every division. Almost 50 players competed over the weekend in what was our biggest Club Championships so far. Swim Neptune

It was dawn aboard Bay Celebrations. Typically a boat reserved for social occasions in the San Francisco Bay, on Saturday April 20 it was hosting a different kind of party. Approximately 80 swimmers age 8 to 65 were celebrating the culmination of a six month training program with a 1.4 mile swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco’s Aquatic Park. The next day, Sunday April 21, 60 swimmers from the same group made the 1.2 mile swim across the Golden Gate Bridge. In 2013 the conditions in the Bay were picture perfect with little wind, clear conditions, and calm water. The Alcatraz Swim started from the boat. The horn sounded and all 80 swimmers hit the water within two minutes. The first ten minutes are the hardest as the jolt of the cold water fades as the swim continues. On the way to shore swimmers are surrounded by awesome sights. A breath to the left gives you a view of the Bay Bridge, a right side breather is treated to views of the Golden Gate, flipping on your back gives you a view of the ever-shrinking Alcatraz Island as you swim toward the awe-inspiring skyline of San Francisco. After entering Aquatic Park the last several hundred meters of the swim are the celebration, heading towards the crowds on the beach. Each one of the 80 swimmers finished the event, joining the celebration on the beach.

The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

The Golden Gate Bridge swim was a “boat to boat” event. Swimmers jump from the boat on the Pacific side of the South Tower. The event happens during a flood tide, which pushes swimmers under the bridge where the boat waits on the Bay side of the North Tower. Since 2007 swimmers from Arizona have been making the trek to San Francisco in support of the Foundation for Aquatic Safety and Training (FAST Foundation), a Kids Saving Kids focus to water safety and drowning prevention. A majority of the swimmers are under 15 we had great representation from Village swimmers including: Jack Cahill, Devin Esser, Francis Fontes, Maria Murphy-Fontes, Sophie Isom, Robert Isom, Tristan Joslin, Mia Joslin, Antje Joslin, Kristin Keeble, Lance Keeble, Holly Keeble, Isabella Lantz, Jared Lara, Forrest Lindemann, Tim Lindemann, and Ryan O’Hara. The swim is supported by 15 local swimmers who are paired up with younger swimmers assuring that nobody is swimming alone. The course is lined by rowboats, zodiacs, kayakers, and paddle boarders. Additional support is provided by the SF Police Department Marine Units, the SF Fire Department, and the US Coast Guard. Renowned open water swimmer Jen Schumacher, an invited guest of the event, called the swim the “safest, best supported event” she had ever seen. We have the opportunity to expand the swim and in 2014 we are excited to be able to offer additional Village members the opportunity to “Escape Your Limitations” and do two amazing open water swims in one unforgettable weekend. Did you conjure up an image of your most hippie-like Aunt sitting cross-legged chanting the word OM? Or perhaps you simply thought that yoga must be reserved for the uber-flexible…those you might find at a Cirque du Soleil audition. Well, I’ve got good news—you don’t have to have a sticky mat to practice yoga and honestly don’t even have to challenge your hamstrings (although most of us definitely have some tight muscles in need of a good stretch)! In fact, you might be pleasantly surprised to find that you are already a “yogi” and ARE practicing YOGA—a tradition that is thousands of years old, and one that offers endless wisdom and value to help each and every one of us live life a little more simply, healthily and peacefully. According to Patanjali, the author of the most ancient writings on yoga, there are eight steps that basically act as guidelines on how to live a meaningful and

purposeful life. I like to think of these steps as something of a yoga “ladder”. The first two rungs include what are called the “yamas” and “niyamas”, golden rule–like principles that remind us of how we should conduct ourselves in life. It is not until the third rung that you actually find what most of us believe to be yoga (think tree pose)—the physical part, or exercises, known as “asanas”. As you move further up the ladder, the rungs typically become a little more challenging and lead you to what, deep down, all humans aspire to: peace. It is important to remember that peace ultimately can neither be bought or possessed, but only experienced. Let’s take a look at how we might already practice YOGA in our daily lives, by considering the way the yamas & niyamas can be found in most everything we do. Below find a few supersimple personal examples of how I incorporate these into my life—you can too!

Take a moment and think back to the first time you heard the word yoga: If you are like my dad, maybe you thought it was something smooth & fruity found in the refrigerated section of the local grocery. Perhaps you thought it was some far Eastern religion, practiced by robe wearing monks.

Take a moment, do a little self study and ask yourself how you fare with the yamas & niyamas: do you practice yoga without ever stepping onto a mat? If so, are you ready to take it to the next step and reap the physical benefits as well? Or are you coming to the mat regularly, improving physically without the full benefits of yoga as it is intended? Then perhaps it’s time to take your practice off the mat as well.

Six courts will be rebuilt with post-tension concrete at the Camelback Village! Courts 4 – 9 will be out of commission for about 8 weeks. During this time, we will have access to 4 courts at the Phoenician for our members to use as well as the 9 courts we will have open at the club.

We will hike until 6:30 pm and if we’re not to the top we will turn around and head back so we’re done by dark. We’ll head to Blue Adobe restaurant afterwards (Via Linda & Frank Lloyd Wright). She may have called it a walk but I now realize that it was hiking in the real sense of the word. Up and down hills, through streams, across rocks and up stairs—we encountered all kinds of fun obstacles in both the wilderness and the urban jungle. Her reason was to provide me with a free adventure, but she also gave me an opportunity to become a fit, healthy, balanced and a coordinated individual.

I now carry on the family tradition and, at least once a week, I drag my family, including my dogs, on a hike. We vary our destinations, return to old favorites and now and then, we set off on foot from our own doorstep to see what‘s what in our local neighborhood. I try to keep it challenging, exciting and fun. Even if it’s raining, we venture outside.

There are so many reasons to hike! If you want a new adventure, need to lose some weight or need a good free activity to do with family or friends—you should give hiking a try. The health benefits associated with hiking are vast. Check out my top five reasons to go hiking:

3 A LTITUDE Training at a higher altitude has many health benefits and can improve your overall fitness level. It is, however, something you should build up to slowly.

I love a challenge, exploring new surroundings, being outdoors and, of course I love to exercise! Hiking gives me all of those things in one simple free activity. When I was a child, my mother took us on walks every weekend, we packed a lunch and spent the entire day outdoors, whatever the weather.

Vary the type of trail surface you hike on. Start out on mostly flat trails and build up to sandy or rocky surfaces. Walking on uneven terrain forces all of the small under-worked muscles and tendons in your feet and ankles to get strong.

In a world of technology our kids can get caught up in the conveniences of mobile apps, fast food, and hand held games. Obesity is on the rise in children, but more family involvement in exercise and nutrition can reduce the risks of obesity and may even help kids do better in school.

Family Activities Here at The Village we encourage families to come to the club to workout, join a program or class, or just to have some family fun! Below are some tips to stay active and healthy as a family this summer (activities with children require a family membership): • Play some ball! Whether it’s on the basketball court, racquetball and squash courts, or tennis courts you are sure to have a ball. Take a swing with one of our complimentary racquets or bring your own. • Go for a swim! Cool off this summer by taking a dip in the pool or relaxing under the cabana.

Tailored Program All of the Village Trainers are required to have a four year degree in the field of exercise physiology and a national certification. This means they have the knowledge to look closely at what your needs are and develop an effective program to suit your needs. Another fun fact: All Village Trainers will be taking a certification called the Functional Movement Screen this summer. Put simply, the FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional training and physical conditioning and body awareness. The FMS generates a score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore proper movement patterns.

TEN EASY SUMMER SNACKS FOR KIDS

With school out for the summer, it’s back to preparing snacks on a daily basis! Whether you’re coming up with bites to be eaten at home or at day camp, here are ten great ideas from Chef Sabrina that’ll freshen up the menu. Let them be Choosy An afternoon snack gives kids the energy to play outside, swim, hike and just be a kid. The important thing is to provide kids with choices. If all the choices you give them are reasonably nutritious, then everybody’s happy: your kids get to choose their snacks, and you get to ensure that they’re eating healthfully.

Fresh Fruit Kabobs Fresh fruit is always a great kidfriendly snack. You can make fun kabobs to pack for day camp or just keep a large bowl of cut-up fruit in the refrigerator. This way, there is always a healthy grab-and-go snack available.

Homemade popsicles There’s nothing like an ice cold fruit pop on a hot summer day. Instead of just buying store-bought popsicles, try making your own. All you have to do is pour your favorite juice into a homemade popsicle mold and voila! Instant frozen magic.

Easy to put together and customize according to your preferences, this snack is sure to become a staple in your kitchen! You can use a variety of nuts, M&M’s, shaved coconut, cereal, etc. Be as creative as you want!

that is easy to transport. String cheese contains calcium, which keeps your bones strong. If it’s very hot, keep the string cheese in a cool place or add an ice pack when you’re on the go.

Frozen Grapes One of my daughter’s favorite summer time snacks is frozen grapes! They taste great, cool you off and help to keep lunch box items chilled! Simply wash and freeze! Roasted edamame Edamame is packed with healthy fiber and protein. Most kids love it raw, but for a special treat, douse with olive oil and your favorite spices (we love chili pepper, cumin, salt and pepper) and roast in the oven for 10 – 15 minutes until golden brown. Mmmmm…

Nuts Almonds, pecans, and walnuts are good sources of anti-inflammatory n-3 essential fatty acids, which are just as essential for children as for adults. Nuts are made up of healthy fats, which kids need for growth and development, as well as for heart health. Having a little bit of “good” fat gives your kids a burst of energy to keep them going.

Soy Crisps If you can’t eat just one, consider switching from potato or tortilla chips to soy crisps. A huge 140-calorie-ish portion generally packs only 2 grams of fat and as much as 10 grams of healthy soy protein, depending on the brand. So you can munch away and feel like you’re eating a ton without any guilt about the grease factor.

HYDRATION on hot arizona days

It is important to stay hydrated anytime, anywhere, but especially important during the summer months in Arizona. Water makes up 60% of your total body weight and keeps your body working in tip top shape. Water works to flush out toxins, carry nutrients to cells, and provides a moist comfortable environment for your ears, nose, and throat. Without proper hydration, you will feel drained of energy and your body will not be able to carry out its normal functions.

So how much water should the average person be drinking? The average, healthy adult in a temperate climate needs 2.2 liters for women and 3 liters for men. The old adage of 8, 8-oz glasses of fluids/day which equates to about 1.8 liters, which is right in line with the amount that we need! These water needs are for an average adult with average conditions. Some conditions that affect hydration needs include: exercise, weather, illness, and pregnancy/breast feeding. Exercise water loss can be tracked by your weight to see if you are replacing your water loss adequately: weigh yourself pre and post exercise. If you have lost weight you did not drink adequate water during your workout and should make sure you replace your water loss. A short exercise session should require an extra 400 – 600 ml of water (about 1.5 – 2.5 cups). During long exercise and activity that causes a lot of sweating, you need to

also replace lost sodium with an electrolyte / sports beverage. The hot climate in Phoenix may require you to drink almost 4 liters of water if you will be in the heat. Also make sure to avoid caffeine and alcohol which can exacerbate dehydration, There is such a thing as over hydration, so listen to your body and consult a physician or registered dietitian if you have special needs or are not feeling right. If you have trouble drinking that much water, you also get water from the foods you eat. Foods that can help aid in hydration include many fruits and vegetables. Some of the top ranking include watermelon, cantaloupe, grapefruit, strawberries and grapes, which are made of more than 90% water. Some other top ranking fruits are bananas, pears, and oranges. Vegetables are naturally low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals and fiber and they can also keep you hydrated. Vegetables that are made of more than 90% water include iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, spinach, tomatoes and egg plant. Enjoy a diet full of fruit and vegetables and you will not only provide your body with many vitamins and minerals, you will also provide your body with an additional water source.

Microwave Popcorn Movie popcorn gets a deservedly terrible nutritional rap, but low-fat microwave versions are actually a terrific snack for you (and kids older than 4; younger than that, it can be a choking hazard). Look for individual 100-calorie bags or brands that are at least 94 percent fat-free, which amounts to a huge portion of healthy whole grains for only 100 – 120 calories. Smoothies Even the pickiest kids can’t resist fruit smoothies, which are naturally sweet and can be an excellent way to sneak nutrition into their diet. Beware of store-bought smoothies, however, which are usually full of added sugar. These end up carrying as many calories as a full meal (for a toddler). You might as well be giving them a milkshake. If you make the smoothies at home with fresh fruit such as bananas and strawberries, plain yogurt and low-fat milk, it’ll be a healthy source of calcium and protein.

MEMBERS Like many people who exercise regularly, Linda Ozkan just wasn’t seeing results. She played tennis, did cardio, and even took Pilates classes on a regular basis, but little by little her weight kept creeping up and she wasn’t happy about it. “Nothing was changing and I wanted to lose weight,” she recalls. “So I joined a transformation challenge at the Gainey Village.” In this group setting, Linda was introduced to a lot of different things, including weight machines and short, intense bursts of exercise. Linda started to see results and loved the camaraderie she experienced and the accountability she felt in the group setting. And then, when the Village started offering CrossFit classes, she really became inspired. CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman in Santa Cruz, California over several decades. The core strength and conditioning program consists of constantly varied functional movements (CVFM), performed at high intensity (HI). According to the official CrossFit website, trainees prepare themselves “for just about any physical contingency—not only for the unknown, but also for the unknowable.” What makes CrossFit such a powerful and popular protocol is the spontaneous community that arises when people work out together. Without the communal aspect of CrossFit, it wouldn’t be as effective. In fact, Coach Glassman’s equation— validated by huge amounts of data is that Health = CVFM @ HI + Communal Environment. Linda has lost a total of 35 pounds since she started her first transformation challenge, and has noticed that she has a lot more power and endurance on the tennis court. Her enhanced performance, on the court and off, has made her something of a CrossFit evangelist. We talked to Linda before her annual summer trek to San Diego to find out more about how she discovered her hidden super powers.

Linda Ozkan has always been active—and even earns a living as a tennis pro. But it wasn’t until she started an intense transformation challenge that she realized just how much better she could be.

It sounds kind of masochistic. It’s really funny how everyone in the group bonds around the intensity. We’re all like, “God, that workout really sucked…What time tomorrow?” I love the program because it has given me really great results. And as hard as it is, I feel so happy afterward! What do you think is the secret to your success? Every day is full of surprises. You never know what the WOD—workout of the day—is going to be. And it incorporates a lot of strength training, which is something I hadn’t been doing before. Now I’m doing some Olympic weightlifting techniques and it’s really exhilarating.

How has all your training impacted your tennis game? Gainey Village CrossFit really complements my tennis, because it’s short bursts of movement and then recovery. My overall conditioning is great, plus I’ve really increased my serve power. How have your teammates responded to the changes? My teammates love them, but my opponents sure don’t! I’ve had one co-captain get into CrossFit, too. She told me I really inspired her to improve her upper body strength. What about your family? I have two kids in college. My daughter’s not a huge CrossFit fan, but she exercises regularly. My son, however, really loves it and joined a CrossFit gym where he goes to school. Can you talk more about the social, or community, aspect of the training? Gainey Village CrossFit people are really, really nice. You bond with these people like in the military, and what’s great is that there are so many different ages and backgrounds in the group. Everyone’s cheering each other on, and I’ve become really close with the people I train with. How has your diet changed since you started doing Gainey Village CrossFit? One thing I learned from a nutritionist and my trainers was that I wasn’t eating enough protein. When I added it to my diet, I found that it really kept my sugar cravings down. I used to have a sweet tooth and now I can’t believe that I used to eat ten of those cookies or whatever before.” What advice do you have for people who want to start a CrossFit program? Just do it and don’t be afraid. The trainers are all really encouraging and the camaraderie you’ll get from the people you train with will be one of the best experiences of your life. You have to take a CrossFit intro course to learn how to do things correctly, in order to reduce the risk of injury. If you find that you’re doing stuff on your own and not getting the results you want, then CrossFit could be just the thing you need.

Mother and Daughter Tea Party

Thank you to everyone who came out to our annual Easter Eggstravaganza event! This event gets bigger and better each year. We added the pony rides this year and did a balloon show that even parents enjoyed!

The Village at DC Ranch held a Mother and Daughter Tea Party on Saturday, May 11 to celebrate Mother’s Day and raise money and donations for the Sojourner Center. “Sojourner Center is one of the largest domestic violence shelters the United States. Gainey Village held a dog wash on May 11 to raise money for the Village Walkstars as they raise donations for the 60-mile 3-day walk in November. The dogs were very well behaved and received fun bandanas after they were done.
