Gainey's new registered dietitian nutririonist, Kristina Hallberg, will change the way you think about food. See page 18.

It is coming up on six months since I have taken over as the GM at Camelback. I love to put up quotes on my office door to help motivate individuals or perhaps help everyone reflect on things in life. This one in particular is one of my favorites. It truly applies so much to the values and philosophy of the Village. Our members cover a broad spectrum. There are those dedicated to improvements physically. Some are more focused on overall health. Some wish to improve in a particular sport or activity such as yoga, tennis, basketball, swimming, or triathlons. And there are those who seek the benefits of socializing and networking. Regardless of what they are seeking, there is a common factor: none of that will come easily. One will need to work at it, hone some skills, and seek to improve. Comfort zones are what we try to get all our members to challenge in anything they are involved with here. Of course, on a physical level, the best way to get results is to push out of and beyond your personal comfort zone. “One more rep, one more lap, two more minutes!” Physical comfort zones are not the only ones. Pushing your boundaries with diets, selfdiscipline, and achieving personal victories are challenges also. Even the comfort zones in the social and networking world are tough. To talk to complete strangers, to start a conversation from nothing, or to even get eye contact with or smile at a complete stranger are just as difficult for many of us. The important thing to remember is that we all have this challenge, although in many different ways. The great thing

is that we at the village have a place to help us get out of those comfort zones. So do that one more rep, say you’ll pass on the junk food, take that aerial yoga class, or smile and say hi to the next member you run into. You might help them get out of theirs. COULD YOU

BENEFIT FROM THE EXPERT ADVICE OF A

PERSONAL TRAINER? The answer is a resounding YES! At the Village Health Clubs we set ourselves apart from the industry in numerous ways. Our personal training staff is one of those ways. While the industry as a whole unfortunately does not have strict requirements or minimum standards to become a personal trainer, at the Village we require a minimum of a four- year degree in a field related to Exercise Science. If you look at our web page or our wall of trainer photos and bios you will see we only accept the top five certifications in our field as well. There are many easily attainable certifications out there, but they are not what the Village is looking for. We have some of the best-educated personal trainers in the industry. Many of our trainers have years, if not decades, of experience, multiple certifications, and specialty certifications as well.

Corey Degenstein Gainey Village Fitness Director

Have you been working out for years? Trainers provide new programs for those who have been working out for decades (and I mean those of you whose workouts look like someone designed them in the 70s or 80s.) Times change. Exercise science, like other sciences, has changed. Village personal trainers stay abreast of what is current through continuing education and can assist you with the new and the tried and true in our field. Connect with your club's Fitness Director or a trainer of your choosing at your Village Club today. An hour spent with a Village personal trainer can save you hours of ineffective training and pay serious dividends in your efficiency while at the club.

To get back to the original question, “could you benefit from the expert advice of a personal trainer?, I hope to get you thinking about how a personal trainer can assist you in your health and fitness journey. Trainers provide immediate feedback as to proper form and technique during complex functional movements. They provide

direction to those who have little knowledge of resistance training. They can give you a great starting point for programming intensity, exercise volume, and many other workout variables. Interested in balance training, flexibility, weight loss, power development, or self-myofascial release techniques? Trainers can provide assistance with these areas and so many more.

TOP DOUBLES TIPS IMPROVE YOUR TENNIS GAME

Will White, Camelback Village Tennis Director

Here are 10 tips that you can use to help improve your tennis game. You and your partner can help each other improve by implementing these simple, yet important, doubles concepts.

10 Know your position on the tennis court:

This is a common mistake doubles teams make. It is very important to know what formation you are in when playing doubles. Where you stand on the court will determine the quality of shots that you can hit. The various positions in doubles include: one up one back, both on the baseline, and both players at the net.

9 Get your first serve in: 8 | BET TERLIFE summer 2017

This is the primary role of the server. You are 70% more likely to win the point when your first serve is put in play. It keeps the return team off balance and puts you and your partner in position to control the first shot.

8 Fake poaching:

When the net player is active at the net he or she can cause the return player grief. Fake poaching should start early in match and continue throughout it. Fake poaching leads to net players getting more balls hit at them, which gives them a greater number of chances to end the point.

7 Movement on the court:

One of the benefits of playing doubles is having a partner that covers parts of the court that you cannot. If you get pulled off the court, does your partner move with you and limit the options your opponent has? Moving with the ball is a two-person job; players and teams that move well together are the most successful.

Are you looking to take your doubles tennis game to the nextlevel?

6 Make your returns:

Growing up playing tennis, I heard “get the ball in play” from my coaches all the time. One of the best ways to make a server feel the pressure is to get their serve back in play. The return doesn’t have to be an ESPN highlight shot—it just has to go over the net (preferably not to the net player).

5 Use the lob:

One of the most underused shots in tennis is the lob. When you are in trouble, use the lob to give yourself and your partner time to get back into position. Another smart tactical play is to lob when returning a serve. This causes chaos for the other team as they scramble to retrieve your lob.

4 Hit down the middle:

The lowest part of the net is the best place to hit your groundstrokes. It is a high-percentage play that forces both opponents to move to the middle to cover the ball you hit. Remember, “Down the middle solves the riddle.”

3 Use signals:

The use of signals before a point starts is a great way to set up various plays in doubles like poaching, fake poaching, or even the location of serves. As a server’s partner you are the quarterback of the court when your partner serves. Signals will help you get more touches on the shots coming from your opponents. One of the tennis doubles tactics that may make or break a match is communication. Teamwork is lost in the absence of communication and the absence of team work in tennis doubles means disaster. Proper communication is vital for the two players in a team to play as one. Right and timely communication allows the players to execute perfect and timely tennis doubles tactics to win points.

1 Have FUN:

Doubles is a very social sport. It is a chance to play with friends or players at the same level. It is also a great way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors.

WATERTRAINING

FIND BALANCE IN DIETING AND GETTING IN SHAPE

Athletes of all levels can benefit from training in the water. More athletes are using the swimming pool for training. A simple Google search for “pool workout for professional athletes” may surprise you. Linda Bernal, Ocotillo Village Group Fitness Director

The benefits of aquatic training are well documented. Many professional and college teams have incorporated aquatic training. During preseason, the aquatic environment is used for cross-training to prevent overuse injuries during an intense training period. Experts also are quick to point out that pool training can also be effective in the offseason. Following are ways that water training can help even the most advanced athletes:

Reduce Overuse Injuries.

12 | BET TERLIFE summer 2017

The repetitive stress of intense, specialized training contributes to overuse injuries. Depending on water depth, aquatic training can reduce impact up to 85%, resulting in less stress and reducing the likelihood of injury.

Supplement Your Training Regimen.

Many moves you currently perform on land can be performed in water without worrying about impact. Shallow water is beneficial for vertical jump training; transitional depths are good for racquet sports training; and deep water is valuable for long-distance run training.

Add Variety or Overcome Training Plateaus.

Water provides resistance in multiple planes of movement, allowing for new types of overload. Working in a different environment reduces boredom and adds fresh challenges.

Increase Muscle Strength.

Cardiovascular and muscle endurance training can occur concurrently in the water. Correct training techniques and equipment make it possible to build strength.

Supplement Speed and Sports Training.

Coaches can teach sport-specific moves in the water. Aquatic training improves core muscle recruitment to stabilize the body against the water’s forces.

Facilitate Post-Workout Recovery.

The hydrostatic pressure from immersion increases circulation, reduces swelling, and enhances recovery. Water training provides a comfortable environment for active-rest workouts.

The Science Behind the Workout

Have you ever wondered why a workout in water is so different from one on land? Exercises that work on land do not always translate directly to water. Factors affecting the results of aquatic training include the following:

• Water’s Distinct Properties • Training Depth • Water Temperature Here is a brief review of the physiological effects of vertical immersion in water: Buoyancy: Water exerts an upward thrust on immersed objects equal to the weight of fluid displaced. The force of this upward thrust depends on a person’s body composition, shape, bone density, and immersion depth. Hydrostatic Pressure: When you are immersed in water, pressure is exerted on all surface areas below the water. This makes lung expansion and breathing more difficult. This pressure enhances venous return and stimulates the lymphatic system. Water temperature also affects the way your heart responds. Viscosity: Water is approximately 800 times “thicker” than air and movement in water creates more resistance. Drag forces, movement, speed, turbulence, lever length, and equipment can all be used to manipulate resistance levels. Resistance increases exponentially as more force is applied.

Aquatic training can reduce impact up to 85%, resulting in less stress and reducing the likelihood of injury .

Thermodynamics: Water transfers heat 25 times faster than air. This affects heart rate and oxygen consumption. High-intensity exercise such as cycling or running in cool to cold water results in heart rates that are 10 – 15 beats per minute lower than on land. Don’t underestimate the power of water. I invite you to try a group fitness aquatic class. References: The Latest in Water Fitness, http://www.ideafit.com/idea-fitness-journal/2017/may

MICRONEEDLING: REWRITE your SKIN

Ashley Lew, Lead Aesthetician, DC Ranch Village Spa

Rewrite your skin’s future with the latest innovative technology for microneedling on the market, the Eclipse MicroPen® Elite. Eclipse micropen elite is an automated Microneedling device (also known as epidermal collagen induction therapy or CIT). The micropen is a safe alternative to common skin-resurfacing tools such as lasers and dermal rollers. The MicroPen Elite is affordable and effective, requires minimal downtime, and provides natural-looking results.

Benefits of Microneedling

14 | BET TERLIFE summer 2017

The benefits of microneedling can include a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. Microneedling creates superficial micro-channels which can be used with topical gels, serums, and creams to help improve the appearance of the skin. While results may vary based on each individual’s skin concerns and whether the client is receiving one treatment or has committed to a series of treatments, Microneedling targets fine lines, acne scarring, pigmentation caused by hormones, and sun damage, and improves the texture, tone, and clarity of the skin. Microneedling can also help to improve the appearance of stretch marks and scars. Eclipse MicroPen Elite can be used on all parts of the body, face, neck, décolletage, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, and back.

The Microneedling Procedure and Recovery Process

Here at the DC Ranch Village Spa, the treatment begins with a Dermaplane of the face for optimal Microneedling results. A topical numbing cream is then applied to the areas that will be treated. The client will then sit in our relaxation room for 30 minutes while the numbing cream takes effect. Once the client returns to the treatment room, one of our trained and skilled aestheticians will remove the numbing cream from the first area being treated, and then apply the numbing cream to the second area to be treated.

A sterile disposable cartridge containing 12 points is attached to the Eclipse MicroPen. Your aesthetician will apply a thin layer of topical hyaluronic acid serum to your skin and select the appropriate pen setting based on your unique needs and the areas of the skin that will be treated. In a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin, while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

What Microneedling Feels Like

The feeling associated with the Eclipse MicroPen is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, especially the forehead, around the eyes, and above the upper lip, the speed of the reciprocating tip reduces discomfort, while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable. The numbing cream applied beforehand also reduces much of the discomfort.

The Village Spas take great care in recruiting only the best service providers in the industry to assure you receive exceptional spa and salon services. Whether you are looking for a quick manicure, a full day of relaxation or a specific therapeutic treatment, we have the diverse staff to ensure your expectations are exceeded.

Microneedling Results

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results can continue to improve up to six months after a treatment as collagen production continues.

Downtime

Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the Eclipse MicroPen setting used, the number of overlapping passes your skin care professional performs, and on each individual's natural healing process. On average, clients are red for up to two to four days. Many clients heal completely in as little as 24 hours. Many experience extreme sensitivity similar to the feeling of a windburn or sunburn. For the first few days the skin will feel extremely dry, sensitive, and possibly even a little itchy. Typically, the redness will subside after the first day or two. Some light peeling may occur around the nose, chin, and forehead on or around days two through four. By days three to five after treatment, most clients can resume their normal home care. Following strict post-care procedures for home use recommended by your aesthetician can help to speed up the healing process and optimize your results.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Some clients only require a single treatment once a year to achieve and maintain optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of two to three treatments spaced about six to eight weeks apart. For clients with more significant skin care concerns such as acne scars, it is recommended to receive six to eight sessions at six-week intervals. Treatments can be done at four-week intervals to maximize corrective results. It’s also best to space treatments out two weeks from any sort of chemical peel, laser, and/or injections.

Post-Care

• It is not necessary to wash the face the night following your treatment if sunscreen has not been applied. Simply reapply your HYLA3D (or other hyaluronic acid serum) and a recommended growth factor serum or cream. Use a gentle cleanser with tepid water for the first 48 hours following treatment. Gently pat dry. Do not use a wash cloth or Clarisonic. • Avoid makeup, retinoids, glycolic acids, Vitamin C products, and sunscreens for the rest of the day following your procedures. However, specific post- procedural Mineral Makeup (i.e. Jane Iredale), and physical sunblocks containing zinc and or titanium dioxide are safe for the same day. • Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for the skin’s rejuvenation. Use Tylenol, if needed, for any soreness. • Avoid any sun exposure for 24 hours. After that, apply sunscreen with SPF 30 daily, reapplying every 90 minutes if outdoors—but attempt to avoid sun exposure for the next week whenever possible. • Avoid swimming, strenuous activity, hot yoga, steam, sauna, hot tubs, and exercising during the first 24 hours following treatment. • Use only gentle skin care products for the first three days. • On day 3, Jan Marini’s papaya-based enzyme cleanser Clean Zyme may be used to help gently remove any peeling or flaking. Eclipse Micropen® Elite available at DC Ranch and Gainey locations.

For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photoaging, or acne scars it is recommended to receive six to eight sessions at four to six week intervals. Eclipse Micropen Elite is available at DC Ranch and Gainey Locations.

Three reasons you should add it to your daily skin care routine: • V itamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, rebuilds youthful skin by combating free radicals. Free radicals seek a matching electron and when they steal one of the proteins in a strand of collagen, it causes a tiny break in the strand. Once a bundle of collagen has multiple breaks, the skin begins to sag and wrinkle. Vitamin C donates one of its own electrons, ending the electron-stealing action. • V itamin C acts as a mild natural sunscreen, which prevents and treats ultraviolet (UV) induced photo-damage. It also brightens skin and fades the signs of previous sun damage. • It’s a good first step in treating the onset of wrinkles because it is a natural moisturizer, helping the skin retain more water, so it stays smoother and younger looking. All four Village Spas offer a variety of products to make it easy to incorporate Vitamin C into your daily skin care regimen. Stop by and ask us to help you pick out the treatment that is right for you.

I encourage all MYZONE belt owners to use their belts both inside and outside the club.

WEAR THE BELT!

SUMMER SURVIVAL GUIDE WITH MYZONE™

So, next time you are on vacation I encourage you to wear the belt so you don’t feel guilty about drinking that extra adult beverage or eating that meal you normally wouldn’t eat. Ask your friendly Village Group Fitness, Personal Training, or Front Desk staff if you have any questions. The MZ-3 belt is available for purchase at the front desk.

summer 2017 BET TERLIFE | 17

Many people are not aware that MYZONE is a fitness wearable that can be used to track your workouts both inside and outside the club. Use of your MYZONE belt is not limited to workouts in the gym. I encourage all MYZONE belt owners to use the belt outside the club. If you are participating in a challenge, the MYZONE Effort Points (MEPS) you earn outside the club also count toward your challenge. If you are getting a quick workout when you are on business travel or on vacation with the family I encourage you to wear the belt. If you are like me and you want to see the workout summary email, you simply have to bring up the MYZONE app and select the Effort Stream before you remove your belt. This triggers the MYZONE smartphone app to connect to your belt, upload your workout to the cloud, and send you an email summary of the workout. This will provide you with the sense of accomplishment you seek for keeping up with your workout regimen while away.

HELLO Eating well is really all about being prepared for life.

EATto WIN Gainey’s new registered dietitian nutritionist will change the way you think about food. Kristina Hallberg has been a member at Gainey Village for about 10 years. And now that she’s part of the team as a registered dietitian nutritionist, she says her perspective really hasn’t changed.

18 | BET TERLIFE summer 2017

“I still do my favorite yoga classes, muscle conditioning classes, and cycling classes,” she says. “I probably work out a little bit more now that I work here, because meeting one-on-one with the members brings me to the club almost every day.” Before taking the gig at Gainey, Kristina worked at a local nonprofit medical center, advising at-risk women about making better nutritional choices for themselves and their families. “It’s amazing how nutrition can change your life in a positive way,” she says. Kristina was always interested in nutrition, because food has always fueled her active lifestyle. “I enjoy sports and exercise,” she says. “I was a personal trainer while I was completing my dietetic internship through Iowa State University’s distance learning program.”

We talked with Kristina about that thing we all have to do— but often don’t do well—eat! the village: Have you always been a mindful eater?

kristina hallberg: I’ve always tried to, but I’m not perfect. People expect it to be easier for me to eat well because I’m a nutritionist, but that’s not always the case. When did you make the link that food can have a dramatic impact on your health? I started really trying to eat more healthfully and balanced after college, when I was learning about the effect food can have on our bodies, minds, and spirits. What’s your philosophy on food? Life is going to throw you curveballs and put you in stressful situations. And if you’re not always taking care of yourself first and foremost, it’s going to be a lot harder to get the energy you need to work through those tougher situations. Eating well is really all about being prepared for life.

Does good nutrition have to taste bad? Not at all! After you start eating fresh, real ingredients for a while, your taste buds get re-acclimated and I guarantee that you’ll come to love a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean proteins, and other things you may not be eating today. But even before then, using different spices and herbs makes good nutrition delicious. So does taking the time to prepare colorful dishes and learn the art of plating food. A lot of the time we eat with our eyes! What do you think of meal delivery services? They can be helpful as long as all the ingredients are fresh and organic. Green Chef is a good one that I’ve tried. Keep in mind that you’re going to pay a premium for the convenience of having everything measured out and shipped to you, but these types of services can be a good way to get started on a healthier eating plan. Do you think that having a plant-based food plan is important? The more plants the better for most people, but I’m not against animal protein. You have to find the balance that’s right for you and your lifestyle. How do you help your fellow Village members eat better? First, I do a food and nutrition assessment. I ask questions about likes and dislikes, medical history, and lifestyle. When applicable, I’ll evaluate my clients’ blood work to look at nutritional markers, like cholesterol. Then I provide a personalized meal plan, which includes information on what to eat, how to shop, and how to plan meals so you’re not caught grabbing a drive-thru burger somewhere because you’re starving. I’m really looking forward to bringing the Am I Hungry? ® Mindful Eating Program to the Village starting this fall. It’s a series of eight workshops that will literally change the way you think about food and nutrition. I love this program, which has been a part of my life for years. How has this program changed your life? I learned a lot in school, but it was very researchdriven. The Am I Hungry? program is a lot more practical and it shows you how to eat without diets or counting calories. It takes away a lot of guilt that dieters feel when they go off their diets, and it gives you the freedom to eat what you love and love what you eat. You let go of the concept of good foods and bad foods and your entire mentality changes. Any final thoughts you want to leave the members with? I want every member to get motivated and healthier by eating the right foods for them. It really is possible to enjoy your food and energize your life!

CHEW ON THIS Here are some quick food and nutrition tips from Kristina:

• Plan your meals in advance. When cooking dinner, make enough food to be prepped for lunch the next day. When meal prepping, plan two or three days out so you’re just cooking two or three times a week. • Carry healthy, portable snacks like string cheese, nuts, whole fruits, raw vegetables, and whole food protein bars like RXBARs. If you’re interested in getting a personalized food plan to match your lifestyle, send an email to khallberg@dmbclubs.com.

summer 2017 BET TERLIFE | 19

• Eat more real, whole foods and fewer packaged, processed foods.

• Eat carbs and protein right after you exercise. Good examples are a sweet potato and a roasted chicken breast, or avocado toast with an egg on top. Always add greens whenever you can for good measure.

KIDS

SUMMER DILEMMA and YOUNG TEENS

Too old for camp but too young to work—this seems to the problem facing young teens during summer break. To avoid the “I just want to hang out” speech, here are some alternatives to the usual day camp programs: Marcia Leach, Ocotillo Village Youth Services Director

Interest-and skill-based camps

Volunteer

These camps are usually short and to the point. They offer some training and learning opportunities in specific areas, either in school subjects or sports. Most of these camps are only offered for a few hours per day, but at least they are doing more than spending time on their smartphone, tablet, or television. The Village offers specialty camps in tennis, basketball, swimming, and more.

There are many opportunities around your community for service learning. From animal shelters, local museums and zoos, to food banks and even your usual day camp program! The Village offers a Junior Counselor Program for our junior members. Your young teens can gain work experience helping out with younger kids in camp by being a role model, assisting adult team members, and just being a buddy to a lonely young camper.

Start a small business Teens can stay busy by babysitting, mowing lawns, walking dogs, house-sitting, or other services they feel could be useful within their community. What better place to start than inside your Village Community!

There is a whole summer full of adventure waiting for your teen! You don’t have to decide on just one option. Investigate what’s available in your community today—your Village family is here to get you started! Contact your Village today!

ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO EAT

HEALTHY!

5 WAYS to PROMOTE KIDS’ HEALTHY EATING HABITS

1

2

Make healthy foods available. If you stock your kitchen with healthy food choices, kids will eat them. If you stock your kitchen with junk food, with maybe a few healthy foods sprinkled in, they will only eat the junk food—especially if they can see the two choices. It’s a never-ending battle that you as a parent or caregiver will never win. What child wouldn’t choose a piece of candy over a piece of fruit? The reality is, they will always choose processed sugar over fruits and veggies for the simple reason that they do not know any better. They follow our lead, so why not lead by example. Stock your pantry and your fridge with only healthy snack options, that they can see and pick themselves. Give them the freedom of choice. Just like any of us, kids want to have it their way. But is it realistic, as a parent or a caregiver, to always give your kids what they want when it comes to snacks or meals? The answer is no. There is a way, however, to encourage your kids to make healthier decisions, and that is to

give them a choice between healthy options. You may try offering sliced apples with almond butter or carrot sticks with hummus. Maybe edamame or snow peas with a healthy dip or spinach with their favorite meat or cheese in a wrap. Forcing a child to eat what you want them to eat will only have an adverse effect. Options, options, options. Give them healthy options and empower them to make good choices!

4

5

Go to the source. How many times have you been to your local grocery store with your kids, only to experience an epic meltdown from one of them, and have to leave with no groceries to show for the trip? My guess is at least once! I’m not sure there are many kids that enjoy going to the grocery store, unless they are given permission to grab the bottom apple from the apple display and watch all the other apples crumble to the floor. So why not make it a fun outing for them? Teach your kids where their food comes from. Take them to the local farmers' markets so they can meet the people who grow the food. Have them pick out which fruits and vegetables they want to try. Even starting a garden at home and involving your kids with the process of growing and picking their food may tempt them to try different types of healthy foods. Be a role model. Whatever our role may be in a child’s life—an older sibling, a care giver, a teacher, or a parent, we have the ability to leave a lasting impression in all aspects of their life. Probably one of the ways in which we make the biggest impression on kids is our eating habits. As a parent, encouraging our kids to eat healthy can oftentimes be challenging. Sometimes the best way to encourage a child to eat healthy is to show them how. Talk to them about what you’re eating. Show them how making a healthy choice such as vegetables can be just as delicious, as french fries.

Get them involved. Allow kids to be a part of the whole process, from the planning to the shopping to the cooking. Kids love to act like adults. How often do you find your kids mimicking your every move, wanting to help you cook, wanting to wear your clothes, or wanting your iPhone or iPad? My guess is often. What better way to get your kids to enjoy healthier food options, than to involve them in the creation of these meals? However, finding the time to do just that can be the most challenging part of the whole process, and may not always be achievable. Start by making it a once-a-week routine. Pick a day and time that is less demanding with other activities, and set aside some time to create a meal with your kid. Make this your special time together each week, which will help create and build excitement around healthy foods!

CYCLE SETS the

PACE

2017 CYCLE FOR THE CURE When TGen’s Cycle for the Cure announced in March that the top fundraiser for 2017 would win a trip to Paris for the Tour de France, Stacey Roswell knew she had to win. But not for herself. “It’s not that I didn’t want to go to,” Stacey said. “But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made to give it to my friend Cathy’s family.”

22 | BET TERLIFE summer 2017

Cathy Cooper passed away in late February, days before the Cycle 2017 kickoff. She had a fought a courageous, 12-year battle against breast cancer and was survived by her husband Randy and two sons, Jacob and Shane. “When Stacey called and said she wanted to ride in memory of Cathy and her battle with inflammatory breast cancer, I was a little overwhelmed and yet elated at the same time,” recalled Dr. Randy Cooper. “Over her many years of this journey, Cathy had come in contact with TGen, and when she passed, we directed everyone to make a donation to TGen. Anything that we could do to help raise awareness and funds—this is exactly what Cathy would want.” From Stacey’s college friends to her kids’ high school classmates, a total of 132 people joined her effort. Together the For Cathy Team raised $15,089 for TGen’s cancer research programs. “It wasn’t just somebody with deep pockets giving a big sum,” Stacey explained. “It was so many people opening their hearts and giving.”

As long as TGen needs funding, we are committed to growing and refining Cycle for the Cure.

Overall, 267 indoor cyclists as well as yoga and fitness enthusiasts, raised $201,492 at Cycle for the Cure on May 7 at Village Health Clubs and Studio 360 in the Phoenix area. Guaranteed Trust Life kicked off the fundraising with a $50,000 presenting sponsorship, enabling Cycle for the Cure to surpass $1 million in total funds raised since the event started seven years ago. “There are many volunteers, donors, and sponsors who give their time, energy, and money to make Cycle for the Cure a success,” said Cycle founder and co-chair Vicki Vaughn. “To have been able to reach $1 million is attributable to them and to their passion.” This passion is familiar to Stacey: She has ridden in all seven Cycle for the Cure events. Her husband Michael, son Ethan, 19, and Stacey rode in the two-hour spin this year, while her daughter, Emma, 17, handed out towels and water to riders. Her oldest daughter, Kylie, 29, has ridden in the past. Stacey’s sister Linda Shoolman rallied her daughters Rachel from Montana and Abby from Massachusetts to support this research, in honor of family members fighting cancer, including Stacey, a 14-year breast cancer survivor. In 2015 on the day her oncologist was to release Stacey from post-therapy breast cancer care, her final blood test led to a diagnosis of stage 0 chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Supporters like Stacey are the reason that Cycle for the Cure continues to draw such a passionate following, explained co-chair Robyn DeBell. “The hang-tags on our bikes remind us of the real people—some who are survivors and some who are not—that are the reasons we ride and raise money,” she said. “As long as TGen needs funding, we are committed to growing and refining Cycle for the Cure.”

summer 2017 BET TERLIFE |

“My prognosis is good, and when my white cell count gets too high, I’ll have chemo again,” she said, matter-of-factly. “I feel like if I can raise this money for Cathy, it will also be benefiting me. When you love your life so much, you fight for it.”

DC Ranch Dive-In Movie

Village families came out for a night under the stars last August for the annual back-to-school dive-in movie. Once the sun set, everyone enjoyed an evening floating around the pool to watch the latest Minions movie. Kids enjoyed a candy bar, popcorn, and ice cream to ring in the new school year. While kids celebrated being back with their friends and meeting new teachers, perhaps no one was more excited for school to be back in session than the parents! DC Ranch will host the next dive-in movie on August 11th, 2017. Stayed tuned for details‌

The French Open

Ocotillo Village Tennis Director Josh Bates teamed with a tennis travel company called Tennis Ventures to bring 16 Ocotillo tennis enthusiasts to the French Open and Monte Carlo in June of 2017. The event took place at a beautiful club in the heart of Paris. The group watched the best players in the world compete for the Musketeer’s Cup, where we were treated to matches with Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, Simona Halep, Marin Cilic, Feliciano Lopez, Garbine Muguruza, and K Mladenovic. We also saw many of the outside courts and caught some great men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles events including the Women’s Doubles Champions Bethanie Mattek Sands and Lucie Safarova, who just happened to have dinner with us prior to winning their quarterfinal match.

Tennis Ventures is run by Camelback members Chadwick and Camilla Byrd.

After watching some great tennis and seeing the sights of Paris, we were off to Monte Carlo. The clay courts of the Monte Carlo Country Club were exquisite and all the players were sliding and hitting huge as they had just watched the day before in Paris. We played on these great courts for three more days while enjoying the tiny country of Monaco. Tennis Ventures set up private tours of the Prince of Monaco’s Castle, the Yacht Club, and of course the Monte Carlo Casino.
