TIME FLIES I continue to be amazed at how fast time flies. With 2017 behind us, the Village staff have been preparing to bring members an action-packed 2018. Don’t forget to ‘like’ Village Health Clubs & Spas on Facebook, where you’ll be privy to fitness information and Village events—everything Village!

As we move into the new year, the Village Clubs remain committed to providing you with the highest level of service, best facilities, and greatest value possible. Increasing the value of your club membership year after year has been our business practice for over 35 years. The Village has always strived to be much more than a place to work out. We are a community of like-minded people who value a healthy lifestyle. In the fall of 2017, we introduced our Village/Troon golf partnership. This program gives all members more opportunities to experience some of the finest golf courses in the state and socialize with fellow members at our Village-exclusive golf events. To further our commitment of improving technology for our members, in 2018 we will be creating our own Village IT department. This department will focus on technology that will make it easier for our members to access the many programs and events offered at the Village, as well as on creating an improved Village App and increasing online capabilities for class sign-ups and registrations. As we move into 2018, we will continue to reinvest a portion of enrollment fees and dues revenue back into the clubs. This revenue allows us to complete a significant number of club enhancement projects like the Gainey Village Training Center remodel and expansion and the remodeling of the locker rooms at both the Camelback Village and the Gainey Village. We’re also planning for a Camelback Village cardio room remodel later in 2018. These funds will also assist the Village in meeting some new challenges, like the increase in the minimum wage

which will contribute to the rising cost of business operations. We consider our employees to be one of our greatest assets and want to ensure they are fairly compensated for their loyalty and hard work. We would like to thank you for being such great members and for your continued support of the Village. Together we have created a special place for everyone to enjoy. That’s something of which we can all be very proud. In good health, Carol Nalevanko PRESIDENT, VILLAGE HEALTH CLUBS & SPAS

Hotshots Memorial Hike

In June 2013, a lightning strike wildfire happened in the mining community of Yarnell, AZ, leading to a shocking tragedy in which 19 hotshot firefighters lost their lives. In 2017, Village members hiked the Hotshots Trail, a 7-mile round trip through the Weaver Mountains with a 1,200-foot elevation gain. At 600-foot intervals, 19 granite memorial plaques share the story and photos of each Hotshot. Several members who participated in the hike made donations along the trail.

NEW MEMBER’S GUIDE GET THE MOST out of your Village Health Club and Spa experience

Congratulations, you have made one of the hardest first steps to becoming a healthier you and enjoying a healthy lifestyle. Now that you are officially a proud Village Club member, here are some basic steps to boost your confidence and get you using the club without feeling like a beginner.

6 | BET TERLIFE winter 2018

Rodney Kinney, Ocotillo Village Programs and Events Director

Have a plan. Figure out what you are going to be doing before you head to the club to workout. It might sound silly, but it’s helpful to know before you arrive that you’re going to go straight to the locker room to change, then jump on the treadmill for a short warm up and then head to your Group Fitness class. Or maybe your plan is to lift weights for 15 minutes and finish up with the stair climber for 20 minutes, followed by some stretching and a cooldown. Just knowing what you will be doing can help you manage your time effectively. Having the right clothes for your chosen workout activities can go a long way toward helping you feel comfortable and prepared. Make a point of acquiring some good-quality workout apparel that helps you feel comfortable and confident. Having a couple of simple, well-fitting tops and bottoms that are not too tight or revealing—or not too bulky or large— that can mix and match with each other, will cut down on the time you spend preparing to go to the gym. Also, by taking advantage of the monthly Locker Rental and having your own locker to keep your workout gear in, you will eliminate the possibility of deciding not to go to the club simply because you have “nothing to wear” or because whatever you do have is in the wash. You can also take advantage of the Village Club’s laundry service, to have those workout clothes washed and ready to go the next time you arrive.

If you do not take advantage of the club’s locker rental or laundry services, be sure to pre-pack. Make sure to keep your essentials (MP3 player, water bottle, toiletries, shower shoes, MYZONE® heart rate monitor, cross-trainers, socks, basic apparel) in your gym bag at all times. You will also want to use other pockets for items you might want or need for a given day’s workout (say, a racquet and goggles for squash, a mat and headband for yoga, swim gear for pool workouts). That way, you’ll be less likely to forget something crucial for a particular workout and even if you do, you’ll be ready to do something active. Having a workout partner can be fun. If you are an active Village Club member, you will more than likely make friends at the Village that have similar fitness interest or attend the same workout classes. Or just bring a guest. Even if it’s just for the first few visits, use one of your guest passes and bring a friend along or plan a date with a workout buddy at the Village. This also helps with any anxiety or stress and helps you feel that you belong right from the beginning. It can also add an element of fun to your workout experience. Go phone-less. Work is important, and so are your friends and family, but don’t take calls during your workout. Once you enter the club, you should be focused on your workout and the training time. If you must carry it with you (or if you rely on a smartphone app to log your workouts, for example),

be sure to silence the ringer and step to an appropriate location away from fellow club members in the event you have to take a call. This will allow your fellow exercisers to continue their workouts without distraction. Keep in mind that the use of camera phones is prohibited in some areas, such as the Locker Rooms, in all Village Health Clubs. Even if you are in a public part of the club, never take an in-club picture without asking anyone and everyone who might end up in the picture. Locker Room 101: Be considerate with your stuff. Don’t let your clothes and gear pile up on communal benches or block traffic on the locker-room floor. Be friendly, but not too friendly. Assume that most people in the locker room want to keep conversations light and short, and if someone is only partially clothed or nude, he or she might not feel comfortable talking at all. Err on the side of modesty. Practice a little modesty by wearing a towel to and from the shower and sauna, and consider putting on at least your undergarments before doing your makeup or drying your hair. Once you start your workout or class, be sure to monitor your conversation. Group classes can be very social but limit conversations to before and after class, and avoid talking over the instructor. And keep in mind that if you’re tempted to talk a lot, it probably means you’re not working as hard as you could be. All Village Health Clubs have spray bottles, paper towels, and sanitary wipes to wipe down equipment after use. Also make a point of replacing all weights and equipment after you’re finished, pick up any trash, and put your dirty towels in the laundry bin. Little acts of consideration like this go a long way toward making everyone’s experience at the club a more conscious, considerate, and satisfying one. If you plan on using the pool, remember there are a few rules that you should be aware of, before just jumping in. Be sure to get familiar with the pool schedule. There are swim team practices and swimming lessons. Take advantage of the complimentary Masters swimming groups or seasonal Aqua Fitness classes. The pool is one of the most used locations at the Village Clubs. So make sure you are aware of the schedule and what is happening before you get your swim suit on and head to the pool. Always shower before entering any type of pool. Don’t let a crowded pool keep you from regular workouts. Learn the rules of lane sharing: • Find your pace. Faster swimmers tend to take the center lanes. Find a lane with people swimming your speed. • Ask first. Before jumping into someone’s lane, ask to share it. Then wait for the person to resume and get to the other end so you’ll swim in opposite directions, not side-by-side. • Swim in circles. If more than one swimmer is in the lane, ask if they’ll “circle swim” (swimming clockwise in a circle). Allow enough room in front and behind you to avoid crowding.

• Rest on the wall. On breaks between intervals stay close to the wall and out of the way so others can swim through. Never stop in the middle of the lane. • Pass (and be passed) politely. Tap on the toes of the person in front you to tell them you’re about to pass. Wait until he or she gets to the wall and yields before swimming through. If you get tapped, reciprocate. • Socialize on dry land. Don’t waste a lane chatting up your friends. When you arrive at the club, have your Village membership card or mobile app ready to scan when you walk through the front door. Fumbling around in your wallet or purse can make you feel rushed and flustered—particularly if it is a busy time of the day and there’s a line forming behind you. Ask for what you need. While you’re at the Front Desk checking in, ask any questions you might have regarding the location of equipment, availability of classes, sign-ups, and so on. The friendly front desk staff is always happy to help you and it will save you the trouble of looking for a staff person once you’re inside. And if necessary, there are many Village Club staff members that want to help out with any questions or information or even show you what you need to know. Think about next time. After your workout, before you head back to your car, note how much time it took you to complete your workout and also scope out what you might want to do during your next visit. Check the times for Group Fitness classes, and take a look at the Village event flyer wall, where you will find detailed info you can take home with you and put on your refrigerator as a reminder. Take a walk past the pool, or schedule your complimentary appointment with a Village Fitness Trainer. You’ll leave better informed and equipped with a plan of action, and you’ll naturally feel more motivated to come back. Even if you do happen to make a few rookie mistakes (and at one time or another most of us have made them all), it’s no big deal. Every misstep or blunder is an opportunity to grow wiser. In just a few short months, you’ll be a veteran Village Club member yourself, showing the “Newbies” how it’s done.

REFERRALS

at the VILLAGE

We love referrals and you should too. Here at the Village we thrive on working with our members to build long-lasting relationships in and outside the club. We have seen many families make the decision to become members at our clubs based on the affirmation of a friend. We have taken the key elements of what drives a thriving community and made it fun for members to continue sharing this club! Who doesn’t want to invite their friend to a place they call their club? Especially with the incentives we provide to members for each referral!

We have made it simple and fun to invite a friend, neighbor, or co-worker to the Village. Whether it be attending a group fitness class, hanging out by the pool, or grabbing lunch at the café, it’s an easy win for all parties. Why so? Because we honor our members with a FREE month of dues for each friend they refer who signs up. Many of our loyal members are offsetting their dues by sharing the club each and every month. We look forward to seeing the club continue to grow and are excited to see the new relationships in store. When you are ready to share your club, swing by our membership office to pick up a Complimentary VIP Pass for a friend you have in mind! See you at the club!

HELLO

AN UNLIKELY

MORNING PERSON

Members at DC Ranch start their day with Trudy Sanclaria. Trudy Sanclaria hates to get up in the morning. But every Monday through Friday her alarm clock rings at precisely 2:30 a.m. and she starts getting ready to open the DC Ranch Village at 4:30.

12 | BET TERLIFE winter 2018

“Whenever I commit to something I do it,” Trudy says. “Plus I’ve come to like my quiet time over a couple cups of coffee.”

minute of it. We talked to her when she was ending her day at 11:00 a.m., to find out what it’s like to be off to be one of the first people at the club each day. weekday mornings. We talked to her when she was ending her day at 11:00 am, to find out what it’s like to be off to work in the wee hours. the village: Is it weird being at the club so early?

Trudy says she originally gave herself extra time in the morning because she had to cook for her cat, Shadow. “He never ate cat food in his life,” she recalls. “I gave him fish or meat mixed with vegetables and I had to make sure it was all chopped up really fine.”

trudy sanclaria: Not really. I like how quiet it is in the morning. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like walking into chaos, so it suits me just fine. When I get to the Village each day I have time to get things ready, like making sure the computers are up and running.

Trudy retired a few years ago, and rather than sleep in she soon decided to look for work. “After three months of sitting around the house I knew I had to make a change,” she recalls.

What are the members like that time of day? The people who go to the club at that hour are usually pretty focused on getting their workouts done before they have to go to work. Most of the early morning members are all business, so nothing too crazy usually happens.

When a friend told her about the early morning front-desk position at the Village, Trudy decided to find out more. Having worked the morning shift at The Boulders Resort & Spa for several years, she had experience in the hospitality business and thought it would be good to have an activity that kept her mind sharp and keep her connected with other people. Three years later, Trudy still opens up the club before the sun comes up on weekday mornings and is loving every

What do you do when things do get a little chaotic? I’m actually pretty good at multitasking, and when the phone rings when someone’s checking in and another person wants to ask a question you have to juggle things all at once. I used to work in clothing retail in New York, so I know how to juggle!

Are you good at remembering people’s names? So I’ve been told! At first it was a little overwhelming, especially because it’s a pretty casual environment and people are on a first-name basis. When I was at The Boulders, we had to call people Mr. Jones or Mrs. Smith. It’s more difficult to remember first names, because there are a lot of Davids and Johns in the world. What’s your secret? The most important thing is to link someone’s face with their name. The best way to do that is to use the person’s name every time you see them. Repetition locks it in. Have you ever called someone by the wrong name? Yes! I have a standing joke with one of the members, whose name is William. I knew this, but whenever I looked at his face he reminded me of a Michael and I kept calling him that! Do you have a long commute?. Oh no. I live about a mile away. I’m thinking about getting a bicycle so I can ride to work some days. When your day’s over by noon, what do you do with the rest of your time? It varies. I do regular things, chores and errands. I’m trying to work out more, so sometimes I’ll come home and relax for a while and go back to the Village to take a yoga class or work with a fitness trainer. Some swimming classes are starting up soon that I’m interested in trying. I really like being outside, so now that the weather is nice I’m planning to do more hiking. Have you always been active? I was never into sports that much, but I loved gymnastics as a kid. I grew up in a family of tennis players and they always sent me to the wall because I could never really get the hang of it. But we did a lot of camping when I was growing up in New Jersey, and I lived in Colorado for ten years so I do appreciate the outdoors. What’s the best part of working at the Village? I really like the people. The members have a great sense of humor and my co-workers are all friendly. Most of them are a lot younger than I am, so they keep me up to date. Do you give advice to your co-workers? Not really. People have to figure things out for themselves most of the time. I just try to listen to them. If you could share your wisdom, what would you say? Enjoy life, stay out of trouble, and don’t do some of the things I did!

Hot showers actually reduce moisture content in the skin. Keep your showers short and hydrate with a moisturizer immediately after.

4

While our dry climate is tough on our skin, adding foods like salmon that are rich in Omega 3 oils to your diet can help in keeping the skin hydrated.

5

Add a hydrating mask twice a week to your skincare regime or even add a hydrating serum to your regular moisturizer to further enhance the benefits.

Use a humidifier at home. This adds moisture to the air and aids in maintaining hydrated skin.

UNWIND

NEW YEAR

NEW YOU

SAFEST TIME TO FOCUS ON CORRECTIVE SKINCARE

January 1st marks a new beginning each year. Resolutions abound to exercise more, eat better, be more mindful, and follow through on an endless list of goals. (left to right) Ashley Lew, Lead Aesthetician and Melissa Siet, Aesthetician, both at The Spa at DC Ranch Village

In the beauty industry it is all about New Year, New You and has been for as long as I can remember. Because of the intensity of the sun and extreme heat in the desert, there is a small window of opportunity to focus on corrective skincare. The winter season is the safest time. Refresh your skin by smoothing out the lines and lightening dark spots. Our highly skilled and experienced estheticians are trained in a multitude of chemical peels. These treatments focus on smoothing out the texture of the skin, softening the lines/ wrinkles and acne scars, and lightening hyperpigmentation. Chemical peeling is a procedure that aids in accelerating skin exfoliation, resulting in renewed, healthier, more vibrant-looking skin and a more uniform complexion. Each treatment focuses specifically on correcting certain skin concerns, containing different acids, acid combinations, and percentages of ingredients. Typically, the process of these peels, as far as pre- and post-care, and the actual peeling process, will be about the same, but the intensity will vary on an individual basis. Clients with more skin damage to correct usually peel more.

It is important for a client to consult their aesthetician beforehand in order to determine the best peel for their skin type and condition and to go over any possible contraindications, as well as make sure they understand the importance of the pre- and post-peel care. With all of these peels—PCA, Jan Marini and Skin Medica—typically the actual peeling process usually begins on day 2 or 3 after treatment and lasts about 3 – 5 days. It is important to stay out of the sun during the post-peel time, and to refrain from hot yoga, steam/sauna, or anything that will raise the core temperature, as this can cause hyperpigmentation. Peel clients should also refrain from using any and all skincare containing active ingredients including but not limited to the following: Vitamin C, retinols, hydroquinone, AHA/ BHAs, etc., until the skin does not feel sensitive anymore. Post-peel homecare will be recommended to follow each treatment. It is imperative, in order to not only achieve maximum results from the peel, but in order for the skin to heal properly, to follow instructions given by the esthetician.

Last week Ashley had the chance to talk shop with Melissa, DC Ranch’s newest aesthetician, regarding how she determines which peel or peels to use and how she customizes her treatments. Melissa has more than 20+ years in the aesthetic industry! Her background is not only in skincare, but spa management and ownership as well. ashley: Melissa, we have so many peel options here

at The Spas at the Village to choose from; how do you determine which peel is right for each client? melissa: I like to go through a few lifestyle questions. My clients need to understand that I require they be compliant before agreeing to a peel. No working out for 24 – 48 hours, no sun exposure, and everyone’s favorite—no picking. The best suggestion I have for both clients who have done tons of peels and for newbies is to make an appointment for a Peel Consultation. This is when we can discuss all expectations, do a patch test, and talk about homecare to support the best results. Let’s talk about which peels address which concerns. Even though clients come in for consultations, we like them to be well-informed ahead of time. Although we offer many different kinds of peels, let’s just talk about PCA for example. PCA offers a wide variety of peels, and they all address different concerns. It has been my experience that when asking a client which skin concern is the most bothersome, it’s always the second one they mention that ends up the real main concern. Mostly I hear it’s pigment and wrinkles, wrinkles being the main focus when we dig deeper. In this case, PCA Ultra Peel I is specifically targeted for mature skin, addressing lines, wrinkles, tone, and texture. If you are new to peels and have sensitive skin, PCA Sensi Peel is a great option. Men love this peel because it addresses ingrown hairs on the face. I love this peel for highly inflamed acne. Teenagers love the results of this peel. The most potent of the Jessner’s formulas* is PCA Peel with Hydroquinone and Resorcinol. We choose this one for skin that is sun-damaged, oily, and/or battling cystic or active acne. These are of course just a few of my favorites.

To best achieve this goal, I recommend my clients supplement professional treatments with a customized skin maintenance program. A great way to think about it is that 40% of their results will come from the services we perform, and 60% will result from how they are maintaining their skin with homecare. Can you give me an example of how you customize peels? Depending on the main concern of the skin, we customize every peel with corrective serums. So, for example if a client has mature, aging skin, and we choose the PCA Peel with HQ & Resorcinol, we may add a layer of ExLinea Peptide Smoothing Serum. Adding this neuropeptide dramatically reduces crow’s feet, laugh lines, forehead wrinkles, and frown lines. ExLinea is also available on our retail shelves. We suggest 2X a day as a spot treatment. Every peel we perform is custom, and we change them up in a series depending on how the skin is improving. I’m encouraging all of my clients to take advantage of the next few months in our climate and decreased time in the sun to take this time for peels. Many people don’t realize that we are always available to answer any questions about their skin. We are so passionate about what we do, and we love to share our knowledge. So if they have always wanted to start taking care of their skin at any age, or even just desire treatment and retail suggestions, we are here to educate and guide them!

*You may have heard this term before when speaking about peels. It refers to Dr. Max Jessner, the dermatologist who developed blended peels.

winter 2018 BET TERLIFE | 19

You frequently talk about the importance of avoiding inflammation. Why is this so important? Clients are often mistaken that if a little of something is good, more is better. This is especially untrue when it comes to treating the skin. Inflammation is the underlying cause of many skin conditions we work to treat, and triggering irritation and inflammation in the skin with overly aggressive treatments and products will only worsen, not correct, the situation. By treating the skin gently and infusing it with beneficial, nourishing, and strengthening ingredients during professional treatments, we will consistently see faster, more dramatic outcomes. Going too aggressive too quickly often results in postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and/or acne breakouts.

DECODING

FOOD LABELS

Reading food labels is tricky business. Consumers are more health-conscious than ever, so food manufacturers often use misleading tricks to convince people to buy their products. Therefore, it’s essential we know how to sort out the junk from the truly healthy foods with just a glance at the back of packages. Don’t be duped by claims on the front Front labels try to lure you in with health claims that sound like solid choices but often fall short. For example “Multigrain” sounds nutritious, but really just means that there is more than one type of grain in the product, which most likely includes refined grains. “Organic” says very little about whether the product is actually healthy—for example, organic sugar is still sugar. And even “No Added Sugar” is deceptive. Artificial sugar substitutes could be added or an item may naturally be very high in sugar.

Flip to the back and investigate

Since front packaging can’t be trusted, where we really want to focus our attention on is at the back label—starting with the ingredients. Ingredients are listed by quantity, from highest to lowest. Try to choose products that list whole foods as the first three ingredients, and be skeptical of items with a long list of additive ingredients. The first few ingredients also help distinguish if the front label is just “selling” the product as healthy. For example, a bread may be labeled “whole grain”, but if “enriched” or “wheat” flour are the first few ingredients, it is not actually 100% whole grain. We want the first ingredient to be “whole wheat/grain flour.”

20 | BET TERLIFE winter 2018

The next thing you want to look at is the actual nutrition label. These labels can seem overwhelming if you don’t know what to pay attention to, but here are the key items to look at: Calories: Calories are not “bad” but simply a way to know how much energy a food will supply our body. Think of calories as our :budget” for the day. Once you see the calorie content for an item, consider if it’s something that’s sensible to help stick to your daily budget. Also, pay careful attention to serving sizes, since calories can be deceiving if you eat more than one serving of an item. Kristina Hallberg khallberg@dmbclubs.com (Gainey)

Bree West bwest@dmbclubs.com (DC Ranch)

Fat: Instead of trying to look for items with the lowest fat, look instead at the types of fat in foods. Ensure that items contain no trans-fat, are limited in saturated fat, and instead are based mostly on heart-healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats. For items such as meat to be considered “extra lean,” look for seven grams or less of fat per serving. Carbohydrates/Fiber: Carbohydrates are vital for energy and overall health. But if an item exceeds 40 grams, it is a bit higher in carbs than is ideal for one serving. To quickly tell if a product is a healthy complex carbohydrate rather than a simple carb, look at the fiber content. Aim for at least 4 – 5 grams of fiber per serving. Fiber will help balance blood sugar levels, slow the digestion of carbohydrates for long-lasting energy, and help us feel filled and satisfied. Sugar: Try to keep sugar as low as possible since sugar contains empty calories and can lead to cravings, unbalanced blood sugars, and an increase in stored fat. Look for products that have less than six grams per serving. Sugar goes by many names, so take a good look at the ingredient list for its varying names such as brown rice syrup, invert sugar, coconut sugar, corn sweetener, molasses, malt syrup, maltose, or evaporated cane juice. Protein: Protein is essential to build lean muscle and in turn, boost, your metabolism. It also is the macronutrient that takes the longest to digest which means it keeps us satisfied for longer. Look for 20 – 30 grams for ample protein at a meal and 5 – 15 grams for a good source of protein at a snack. Ignorance is not always bliss when it comes to choosing the foods we eat. But the best thing about looking at food labels is that you get to decide what to nourish your body with. If you’re ready to make a permanent and lasting change to your health in 2018, schedule a one-one-one session with a Village dietitian and receive a personalized plan to get you to your goals. GOOD LOOKIN’

AFTER THE HOLIDAYS RECIPE GUIDE

The holidays are now over and we’re back to our daily grind. If you are like most of us (and like me!) you’ve likely over-indulged this holiday season, so in the spirit of getting back on track here are a couple of healthy eating tips and recipes to get you back into the swing of things!

Try this recipe for a quick, healthy, fiber-rich lunch:

The secret to staying within a healthy caloric intake range is satiety (the feeling of being full or satisfied). You’ll be surprised to know that you don’t have to eat too much to feel full either—you just have to eat the right foods. The easiest and best way to achieve this is to eat foods that are packed with fiber. Your body takes a bit longer to process fiber, especially when compared to simple carbohydrates like rice, pasta, and fatty foods. Eating a fiber-rich meal results in eating less throughout the day since your meal will stick with you longer. And the easiest way to stuff fiber in to your meals is by adding lots of fruits and veggies. Your body will thank you and so will your pants.

½ sweet potato cubed and roasted in the oven with salt, pepper, and olive oil

Don’t skip breakfast! Give yourself enough time in the morning to do more than have a cup of coffee. Skipping this important meal, the most important meal, can and likely will result in overeating, because by the time lunch rolls around you’re famished. Have a couple of eggs and a piece of toast, or avocado toast (see my recipe at right!), or something! Just don’t skip it.

Sweet Potato + Kale Salad

8 oz. (½ head) of Tuscan kale (sometimes called dinosaur kale) thinly chopped and tossed in a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar 2 oz. pistachio nuts preferably toasted 2 oz. dried currants 2 oz. fresh blueberries Squeeze of lemon

Try this easy and quick breakfast recipe that will keep you from being too hungry by lunchtime:

Avocado Toast & Egg ½ large avocado mash lightly in a bowl and spread over bread; squeeze a bit of lemon or lime over avocado

½ fresh heirloom tomato sliced, sprinkle with salt and pepper

1 oz. chopped cilantro 1 oz. sprinkled sesame seeds, flax seeds or chia seeds for extra fiber and taste!

KIDS

ENCOURAGE

5

YOUR KIDS

HEALTHY! TO EAT

ways to promote kids’ healthy eating habits

22 | BET TERLIFE winter 2018

Kristin Bullock, Gainey Village Youth Services Director

1

Get them involved.

Allow kids to be a part of the whole process, from the planning to the shopping to the cooking. Kids love to act like adults. How often do you find your kids mimicking your every move, wanting to help you cook, wanting to wear your clothes, or wanting your iPhone or iPad? My guess is often. What better way to get your kids to enjoy healthier food options than to involve them in the creation of these meals? However, finding the time to do that can be the most challenging part of the whole process, and may not always be achievable. Start by making it a once-a-week routine. Pick a day and time that is less demanding with other activities, and set aside some time to create a meal with your kid(s). Make this your special time together each week, which will help create and build excitement around healthy foods!

2 Make healthy foods available.

If you stock your kitchen with healthy food choices, kids will eat them. If you stock your kitchen with junk food, and maybe a few healthy foods sprinkled in, they will still only eat the junk food especially if they can see the two choices. It’s a never-ending battle that you as a parent or caregiver will never win. What child wouldn’t choose a piece of candy over a piece of fruit? The reality is, they will always choose processed sugar over fruits and veggies for the simple reason that they do not know any better. They follow our lead. So why not lead by example? Stock your pantry and your fridge with only healthy snack options, and options that they can see and pick themselves.

3

Give them the freedom of choice.

Just like any of us, kids want to have it their way. But is it realistic, as a parent or a caregiver, to always give your kids what they want when it comes to snacks or meals? The answer is no. There is a way, however, to encourage your kids to make healthier decisions

and that is to give them a choice between healthy options. You may try offering sliced apples with almond butter or carrot sticks with hummus. Maybe edamame or snow peas with a healthy dip or spinach with their favorite meat or cheese in a wrap. Forcing a child to eat what you want them to eat will only have an adverse effect. Options, options, options. Give them healthy options and empower them to make good choices!

4

Go to the source.

How many times have you been to your local grocery store with your kids, only to experience an epic meltdown from one of them, and leave with no groceries to show for the trip? My guess is at least once! I’m not sure there are many kids that enjoy going to the grocery store, unless they are given permission to grab the bottom apple from the apple display and watch all the other apples crash to the floor. So why not make it a fun outing for them? Teach your kids where their food comes from. Take them to the local farmers’ markets so they can meet the people who grow the food. Have them pick out which fruits and vegetables they want to try. Even starting a garden at home and involving your kids with the process of growing and picking their food, may tempt them to try different types of healthy foods.

Whatever our role may be in a child’s life—an older sibling, a childcare giver, a teacher, or a parent—we have the ability to leave a lasting impression in all aspects of their life. Probably one of the ways we can make the biggest impact on kids is through our eating habits. As a parent, encouraging your kids to eat healthy can often be challenging. Sometimes the best way to encourage a child to eat healthy is to show them how. Talk to them about what you’re eating. Show them how making a healthy choice such as vegetables can be just as delicious as french fries.

COSMETIC FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE

Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and non-surgical method to reduce signs of aging with no downtime. Kat Kool has a master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and has been in the medical field for over 20 years. She is a licensed acupuncturist and has worked in private practice and clinical treatment centers since 2005.

Also known as the nonsurgical face-lift or facial rejuvenation, this treatment is designed to make you feel and look radiant. Facial acupuncture is essentially treating the inside to affect the outside. You will not only look better, but you will feel better! So how does it work? Cosmetic acupuncture assists in combatting the signs of aging and gives your skin a lift. One of the building blocks of skin tissue is collagen, and as we age it begins to break down. When a fine, sterile acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin where collagen loss is present, a micro trauma is created. The body’s natural ability to heal is triggered, sending collagen-building and repair cells to begin the healing process. Cosmetic acupuncture can improve the following: • Wrinkles and fine lines • Sagging skin/loss of muscle tone • Dark circles, puffiness around eyes • Swelling and puffiness in face • Acne • Skin discoloration • Dry, dull complexion • Rosacea

24 | BET TERLIFE winter 2018

• Dermatitis Skin conditions such as acne and dermatitis are often due to internal imbalances, which are sometimes related to digestion or diet. Circulation problems and emotional or environmental stressors can also contribute to aging skin. Cosmetic acupuncture can also reduce the signs of aging by strengthening and stimulating the body’s energy circulation. Not only does cosmetic acupuncture improve muscle tone and skin appearance, but it enhances one’s health and wellness. We often hear the saying, “look good, feel good,” but we can turn this around by saying, “feel good, look good!”

Immediate results are visible even after one treatment. Lasting changes can occur when treatments are performed through a regular series of sessions, with maintenance as needed. Initially, a course of twelve treatments is recommended to obtain the most effective results. Outcome is dependent on factors such as age, lifestyle, and health. As we age the skin becomes thinner, muscle tone is weaker, loss of collagen and elastin is more pronounced, and we may have greater health challenges. Depending on these factors, one may require a once-per-week treatment or twice-weekly sessions within the series. This will be discussed during the initial consultation, where your specific needs and desired results are assessed. Purchasing treatments in a series will not only save you money, but will also assure consistency and commitment for the best results. Beauty is a reflection of our internal health. In addition to treating the face, needles will also be placed in various locations on your body. By addressing underlying constitutional imbalances, muscle tone is improved, elasticity of the skin is increased, and fine lines and wrinkles are reduced. Cosmetic acupuncture softens deeper wrinkles, lifts sagging facial muscles, and revitalizes a dull complexion. You may feel like you have more energy, less stress, and better sleep! Although cosmetic acupuncture is a healthy alternative to western medicine procedures, it can also be used in conjunction with injectables and fillers. It is recommended to allow two weeks after these procedures prior to having cosmetic acupuncture. Treatments can be performed using acupuncture alone or can be combined with modern techniques, such as LED light therapy. LED can further stimulate collagen and elastin production activity, boost cell and skin nutrition uptake, improve blood and lymph flow, and increase facial muscle cell energy. In addition, great skin care products are very important in your daily skin care regimen. Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture is like taking your face for a work out. Your skin will glow and so will you!

TRX

MAKE YOUR BODY YOUR MACHINE

The first version of TRX suspension trainer was made in 1997 by Navy SEAL Squadron Commander Randy Hetrick by using only a jiu jitsu belt and parachute webbing. Fast forward 20 years, and today the TRX is used by physical therapists, fitness enthusiasts, every branch of the U.S. Military, and athletes worldwide. Whether you are new to exercise, wanting to improve your golf game, or are needing to change up your workout routine, give TRX a try. One main benefit with working out with a TRX, is that it allows for multi-planar and multi joint movements so that you can become a better, healthier athlete. We move in 3 different planes of movement: frontal, sagittal, and transverse.

Denise Krater, Gainey Village Group Fitness Director

Benefits to TRX suspension training • Increase core strength • Improve muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance • Functional movements • Core activation with every movement • Effective full body workouts • Endless amount of exercises with one piece of equipment • All levels, beginner to extreme athlete • Increase in stabilization • Ability to work in 3 planes of movement • Improvements in overall health

winter 2018 BET TERLIFE | 25 winter

The frontal plane divides the body into front and back halves, however movements are made side to side. Exercises would include a lateral shoulder raise or a jumping jack. The sagittal plane divides the body into left and right sides, and exercises are performed front to back. For example, a sagittal exercise would be running forward, forward lunge, or a bicep curl. The final plane of movement is known as the transverse plane, which divides the body into top and bottom halves, and involves twisting. Examples of exercises in the transverse plane are cable wood chop, or oblique crunches. When you combine planes of movement, exercises require more muscular control, and activate more muscles in the body. Some examples of multi-planar and/or multi-joint TRX exercises are: single arm rotational row, rotational side plank, atomic pushups, frontal lunge with chest fly, and rotational row to press.

Another benefit to working out with the TRX suspension trainer is that it is easy to adjust intensities of an exercise by simply changing your center of gravity. You have control of the intensity just by walking yourself closer or further away from the anchoring point. That means instead of having to grab a different set of dumbbells or add more weight to machines, you simply adjust your foot placement. For example with a TRX row, to make the movement more intense simply step forward towards the anchor point, if the exercise is too hard, simple step backwards away from the anchor point.

CROWNING ACHIEVEMENTS

Gainey Village member Taylor Mulholland is making her mark. Back in 2010, Scottsdale native Taylor Mulholland ended her beauty pageant career after winning the Miss Junior Teen Arizona contest. It was the culmination of a commitment to pageants that began when Taylor was just seven years old.

26 | BET TERLIFE winter 2018 2018

Now Taylor is back in the game, representing Paradise Valley in the Miss Arizona pageant. In addition to enjoying the community service aspects of being a beauty queen—she uses her platform to bring attention to problems in thirdworld countries—Taylor is hoping to use the Miss Arizona pageant as a springboard for her essential oil business. The Miss Arizona pageant was held at the Mesa Arts Center from November 17 – 19. Taylor made the semi-finals and won the Spirit Award, which is chosen by the backstage volunteers and given to the contestant with the best energy and most helpful attitude. “Even though I didn’t take the win, I’m really proud of myself for making top ten,” Taylor says. I definitely made friends for a lifetime and can’t wait to compete next year!” Taylor knows that her Village membership and commitment to healthy living got her in top shape for the event, which featured evening gown and swimsuit competitions.

We talked to Taylor about her work ethic, her active lifestyle, and her efforts to help people take all the chemicals out of their lives so they can be their best. the village: What do you remember about competing

in pageants as a kid? taylor mulholland: I loved how my titles opened doors for me to help in the community. When I was crowned Miss Junior Teen Arizona, my platform was the Arizona Animal Welfare League and I really enjoyed helping them generate awareness of their important work. A lot of people misconstrue pageantry as just this luxurious, fun thing. Yes, we walk in a swimsuit with our hair and makeup all glammed up, but we do it with a deep sense of confidence and self-acceptance. When you have a title like Miss Arizona, or even Miss Paradise Valley, you have the potential to do something good while representing your city or state, whether it’s something small like holding a door open for someone or something big like volunteering for the Red Cross. Was your Miss Arizona experience what you expected after being out of that world for seven years? Since I’ve been through the system before I knew how it all worked, but I have to say that it was a bit different being one of the older contestants. When I won Miss Junior Teen

I really believe that plants are the fastest foods around… You can grab a handful of carrots or an apple in five seconds! Arizona my mom was a lot more involved and I had three sister queens above me who took care of me. This time I was acting like a big sister to two younger girls, which was really exciting. My 2010 pageant director told me that going from Miss Junior Teen straight to Miss Arizona without a pageant coach or trainer is a great step, and that really changed my outlook on the whole competition. What was training for Miss Arizona like? I pretty much lived at the gym for three months. I took spin classes twice a week, plus HIIT classes and Pilates. A year and a half ago, I took Pilates and it really helped me look my best. Really any kind of low-impact resistance training works well with my body, so I focus on that type of training. How do you recover from your almost daily workouts? I love the steam room, and I eat really well to fuel my body. Did your diet have to change for the competition? Not at all! A few years ago I started working at the Juby True juice bar, and my boss at the time completely changed my point of view on food. I was eating processed food back then and making microwave dinners, and she convinced me to cut all that out of my diet. She turned me onto a more natural, plant-based, and uncooked, wholefood diet. She really encouraged me to go online and do a lot of research, to find what I could eat to feel better and what I needed to avoid. I have certain food allergies, so I feel best when I eliminate gluten and dairy. What specifically do you eat? I eat lots of healthy fats, like avocado and almond butter, plus tons of vegetables like steamed broccoli and sautéed fennel and leeks. About eighty percent of my diet is plant-based—I love the plants! Occasionally I’ll have chicken or fish, but that’s pretty much the only animal protein I eat.

I understand you have a crazy work schedule these days... I do! I’m currently working three part-time jobs. I’m a VIP host at Bottled Blonde, I work at Juby True, and I do acting and modeling with Ford/Robert Black. I’ve done lots of voiceover work, along with print and runway modeling. It’s been really fun and all the girls are lovely… It’s a really down-to-earth place. So what do you do in your free time? What free time?! Honestly, if I have a spare moment I’ll just sit and watch TV. I love anything funny, like SNL or Modern Family. I like to keep up with pop culture, but I won’t watch the Kardashians! How important are your friends and family in your quest to do great things? Everyone in my family is here. We’re all about 10 minutes away, and my brothers are part of my business. My friends are the best and we all love living in Scottsdale. It’s really great for people my age and I’ve met a lot of people who’ve moved here from other places. Where do you see yourself in five or ten years? I never want to stop growing and learning where healthy eating, working out, and having a conscious mind can take me. There’s so much information out there, and it makes me sad when people don’t realize what they may be capable of.

winter 2018 2017 BET TERLIFE | 27

Isn’t it difficult to eat non-processed foods? I really believe that plants are the fastest foods around, especially if you don’t cook them. You can grab a handful of carrots or an apple in five seconds! And even if you want to get more adventurous, it’s really easy to sauté or steam some vegetables. Cooking can require some effort when it comes to preparation and cleanup, but it’s really nothing compared to the long-term health benefits you get. I’d rather peel a few vegetables and spend a little more money on organic food than pay huge medical bills later on in life.

What’s the best advice you can give to people who want to switch to a plantbased diet? A good way to start any new diet is to track what you eat. It can be a little tricky at first, but if you write everything down you can prevent overeating and cheating. If you keep tracking things and keep those long-term health benefits in mind, before you know it you’ll really come to love eating this way.

Complete with a string quartet and casino gaming tables, the event was filled with people all the way from the V-Lounge to the tennis courts to the gym floor.

V illage Travel Club set sail on the mighty Danube in October. They visited legendary capitals like Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. It was an amazing adventure filled with great food & wine, tons of laughs, and lasting friendships.

Social success MEET CORI CRENSHAW

Our new digital media marketing manager is making the Village’s social media accounts a lot more fun. Cori Crenshaw got her college degree in digital media and videography, and has applied her 21st-century skills to a variety of sports-related jobs. She did marketing for the FanCred sports social networking app, wrote for fansided.com, and did social media and video production for the Phoenix Coyotes and Arizona Diamondbacks. One of her jobs with the baseball team was to follow D. Baxter the Bobcat around and share his exploits with thousands of fans worldwide. After a short stint outside the world of sports as a social media and marketing assistant for Century 21, Cori came back to sports and fitness with a new position as digital media marketing manager for the Village. “The Village really fits my personality,” she says. “I love that it’s all about being active and well-rounded.”

What first attracted her to the Village was the “vibe of the web site,” Cori recalls. “It made me feel like the Village was a place I’d really like to be.”

Having just started at the end of October, Cori is on a mission to make the Village’s social media accounts a lot more personal, showing members and staff enjoying classes and events, and emphasizing exclusive, behind-the-scenes glimpses you won’t be able to find anywhere else. “Anyone can see what’s on the outside, but we want to get a lot more intimate with our social media accounts,” Cori says. “We want to convey the upbeat, social atmosphere of the actual clubs through our online postings.” Cori is making the rounds at the various Village Clubs around town, and wants to be known everywhere through her active engagement in events and activities. “During my first week, I took four different exercise classes,” she says. “I want to get to know everyone so we can post things that are really relevant to our members and staff.” Cori promises not to post too often, going for “quality over quantity.” And expect to see more employee- and memberbased contests in the future.
