DEAR VILLAGE MEMBERS, It’s hard to believe that spring is here. Doesn’t it seem like we were all celebrating the holidays just a short time ago? I guess time does fly when we’re having fun! 2012 is off to another great start here at the Village Health Clubs and Spas. I would like to personally thank all of you for your membership, support and loyalty. The Village clubs get most of our new members from our current members who refer their friends and family to join one of our clubs. This strong referral program helps give all of our clubs and spas that special feeling of home that we all love so much.

2 | BET TERLIFE spring 2012

All of us at the Village appreciate these referrals. We’re always looking for ways to show our appreciation and to say thank you for referring your friends and family to join the club. For every new member you refer to join the Village, we always offer some sort of referral gift to say ‘thank you’ for your help. Bringing your friends into the Club with you is a great way to introduce them to the Village lifestyle.

Follow or Like us!

So that all of you can continue to be proud of your Village clubs, we have started the New Year off with many new projects, programs and improvements. All of the clubs received new fitness equipment, the Camelback Village remodeled their pools and pool house and added a new ice machine area, the Gainey Village improved their front entry with a new water feature and automatic doors, the DC Ranch Village has all new café furniture and the Verrado Village kept celebrated Founder’s weekend

on March 30, which is always a fun, social event for their members. Our employees pride themselves on making sure the Village is a welcoming place where you can get and stay healthy in a warm and caring environment. We really mean it when we say there is no better compliment that you can give us than to refer a friend or associate. Invite your friends to join you at the Club and we’ll do our best to make sure they are treated in a manner that makes you proud to be a part of the Village family. To your health, Carol Nalevanko President, Village Health Clubs and Spas

A HAPPY HEART

EQUALS A

LONG, FIT LIFE

move it or lose it—get pumping! by Linda Hertzberg, Group Fitness Director at Camelback Village. Linda holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, and is certified in several fitness disciplines by ACE (American Council on Exercise), as well as being a Certified Pilates Trainer.

The folklore and romance surrounding the human heart has a long history. Humans have connected the heart to love and health for centuries. Sayings like “have a heart” or “I love you with all my heart” have come about because we instinctively know how important our hearts are to our lives, whether it’s for expressing sentiment or for living a long, healthy life. Heart muscle needs workouts Your heart is a muscle and like any muscle, if it doesn’t get a workout every day, it will diminish in strength over time. You probably own a car, which undoubtedly costs a fair amount of money. It only makes sense that you take care of your car by making sure that you put good fuel in it. You also know that you can’t just let your car sit for long periods of time because it will deteriorate and might not start the next time you use it. Your heart is a lot like your car. It needs good fuel, regular use and maintenance. Driving your car around town at only minimal speeds is not good for it, either. Your car needs to be driven at higher highway speeds to clean out the engine and make it more efficient. The same principle is true for your heart.

Heartbeats Do things that make your heart beat faster like walking fast or jogging. Take a hike—literally. Find out about your local hiking trails. You might even join a hiking group to make it more fun.

Heart sounds Listen to your heart as you pick up speed. It’s the healthy sound of your body’s pump in action, flushing blood from your lungs to your organs and muscles, refreshing them with oxygen. Oxygen is life-giving. The more we get, the better we feel and the better we function.

Pump your arms when you walk. Take long strides or lift your knees when you walk. This will enable you to maintain a high level of oxygen intake. If you are stuck indoors, march in place to music and move your arms up and down. Try doing modified squats and lunges, then alternate them with arm movements. Move vigorously for two minutes and slow down for one. Keep this interval sequence going for 15 minutes and as you get stronger, gradually extend your workout time. Keep a daily record of how many minutes you spend “pumping” your heart.

spring 2012 BET TERLIFE | 11

Let’s get pumping!

DIABETES

do you know if you are at risk?

According to the American Diabetes Association, 1 in every 400 children and adolescents have diabetes, with 25.6 million people aged 20 or over living with diabetes! In the age group of 65 and older 10.9 million people are affected by diabetes. Yes, it’s true, diabetes has become a national epidemic.

Shawn Perotti is a certified personal trainer at Gainey Village Health Club. He possesses three Bachelor of Science degrees in Exercise Physiology, Nutrition and Nursing as well as 4 certifications in training (ISSA, ACE, RTS, NASM).

Surprisingly, there are an estimated 7 million people that have diabetes and don’t know it, and an astonishing 79 million people have prediabetes—meaning if they continue living the way they do, they will most likely be living with the disease in the future, due to blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

What can we do to stop this in America? The first step to prevention and elimination is education, to learn exactly what the signs and symptoms are, and what to do if you are experiencing the warning signs. Remember, you don’t have to be elderly to be a candidate for diabetes. What exactly is Diabetes? According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a disease characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin. Glucose then backs up in the bloodstream—causing one’s blood glucose to rise too high. So who gets diabetes and who is at risk? Anyone can have diabetes! Research shows that those who are over 40 and overweight (BMI > 25) are more likely to develop diabetes, although the incidence of type 2 diabetes in adolescents is growing. Diabetes is more common among Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans (www.joslin.org).

12 | BET TERLIFE spring 2012

What are the signs? Early warning signs of being diabetic are excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, tingling in the hands and feet, gum disease, bladder infections, wounds that won’t heal, and fatigue. These are due to the body’s inability to move sugar into the fat, liver, and muscle cells to be stored for energy (pubmedhealth.com). If one does not pay close attention to the early signs these can lead to long-term complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, nerve damage, blindness, and even amputation. So, what can you do? Though you have no control over your age or ethnicity, you do have the choice of how you treat your body everyday. You have the choice of whether or not to put a double cheeseburger in your mouth or a healthy chicken salad. Lifestyle changes such as better carbohydrates (ie: limit white carbs), caloriecontrolled meal plans, losing some weight (if necessary), and fitting regular physical activity (30 minutes or more 5 days a week) into your schedule can prevent you from becoming one of the 25.6 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes or one of the 79 million diagnosed with prediabetes. Limit your risk and take control now! If you have any of the symptoms described above, consult your doctor right away. Remember, early detection can make the difference in your life. For further information please visit www.diabetes.org or American Diabetes Association.

THE EXPERT

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

Our addiction to unhealthy sweeteners can be reversed and we can restore our ability to taste the natural sweetness in whole foods over time.

14

[ NOT SO SWEET AFTER ALL ]

Artificial sweeteners are the latest buzz in the ever-changing world of sugar free, low fat and diet products that fill shelves of grocery stores, and sadly our refrigerators and pantries. They are proudly displayed on packages of numerous baked products, fruit juices, snacks, flavored waters, and much, much more. The clever marketers of the food industry continue to convince us that some of the harmful sweeteners are all natural and derived from sugar, and while some of that is true much of it is misleading. An age old proverb states that “a half truth is a whole lie.” Sugar substitutes were first developed in the 1950’s when a clinic director worked to develop a sugar-free diet for patients suffering from diabetes and other chronic conditions. The industry took off and today diet sodas and sugar substitutes make up a huge part of the market and our diet. Processed foods and artificial sweeteners consumed by Americans have created a countrywide epidemic of sweet addicts— and likely you are one of them. Most of us don’t understand that when we eat refined sugar or artificial sweeteners our brains believe that we’re getting nutrients that we need. Instead we are confusing our body and appetite and our food cravings are re-triggered. At that point our bodies are not necessarily looking for more sweetness, they are looking for nutrients that can only be found in ‘real food’! Your body tends to crave sugary foods when it is lacking proper fuel. Sugar is a quick fi x and can give your body an instant boost when it’s running low. However, using artificial sweeteners will not trick your body into thinking that it has had its fill; rather, it wants more sweets because it didn’t get the energy boost that normally goes along with the sweet taste of natural foods. When we take in these low-nutrient foods and drinks, we have less room for the good stuff. Interestingly enough, Purdue University scientists have found in a study using rats that artificial sweeteners increased caloric intake, body weight and body fat percentage. If that study didn’t make the artificial sweeteners less sweet… a study at the University of Texas has shown that diet soda drinkers have proven to be heavier than non-diet soda drinkers. That’s right, diet soda and sweetened water beverages have both been linked to weight gain and worse yet, kidney damage.

Wondering how to avoid the calories while still satisfying your sweet cravings? Are you concerned about consuming too much sugar? Try my personal favorite, Stevia, a sweet herb that has been used for more than 400 years across the world, particularly in South America, and is about 300 times sweeter than sugar. You can now purchase it at most health food stores and on the internet (check out iHerb.com for great deals!).

By Diana Mikolajewska, Healthy Lifestyle Coach & student of Integrative Nutrition

Good news doesn’t stop here. Our addiction to unhealthy sweeteners can be reversed and we can restore our ability to taste the natural sweetness in whole foods over time. It might seem difficult at first, but long term benefits are well worth it. Just remember that chemicals are foreign to our bodies and consuming them will yield your health goals. Replace artificial sweeteners with stevia, organic maple syrup, xylitol, agave nectar, or raw honey. Make sure these items are of a high quality brand and have not been overly processed. Once your body has the fuel that it needs to keep going, it doesn’t need to ‘remind you’, in the form of sugar cravings, that it needs an energy boost. I can promise you that when you consume a variety of all natural, fresh, raw, “real” foods that are organic, you won’t have to worry about scary side effects from a chemically altered derivative of the real thing.

spring 2012 BET TERLIFE | 15

The list of food products containing artificial sweeteners and sales of such items continues to grow, even though we now know that these manufactured goods can cause serious health problems, particularly with long term use. In fact, according to Sucralose Toxicity Information Center, there are more side effects from sucralose (aka Splenda) being reported daily. They

include migraines, diarrhea, swelling, muscle aches, agitation, numbness, dizziness, stomach and intestinal cramps among many others. Any of those sound familiar? You might want to check your labels and immediately eliminate consumption of the not so sweet common and dangerous food additives. Stay clear of acesulfame K, artificial flavoring, aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet), Benzene, food coloring, saccharin (sweet n’ low), and sucralose (Splenda). Remember what to skip while making your coffee and grocery list—NutraSweet, Equal, Splenda, and Sweet and Low!

SHOES

OR NO

?

SHOES

Have you been to the Club and noticed people exercising in shoes with little or no soles? Or have you noticed people wearing shoes with their toes looking as if in a glove? One has to ask “what is up with those shoes? I asked myself the same question, which inspired me to research the foot, gait patterns, and the minimal shoe theory. The foot is very complicated. Our feet have one quarter of our total bones, 150 ligaments, 33 joints, and 20 muscles. The function of the foot can really affect our movement patterns and how well or poorly our muscles work. It is important to look at barefoot training seriously and do your homework before deciding if it is right for you. The first important idea is to understand how your foot lands when you walk or run. Does your heel, mid-foot, or forefoot hit the ground first? The way you strike the ground is very important for minimal shoe wearing. If you are a heel striker, your heel strikes the ground first when running, and a minimal shoe can cause more impact on the joints, according to Dr. Daniel Lieberman, a human evolutionary biologist professor

at Harvard. Dr. Lieberman does research on barefoot running and for the Vibram, (which are branded rubber outsoles for footwear). In his research, he concluded that most people are heel strikers, due to the excessive heel cushion in running shoes, which causes an enhancement of heel striking. The force

the shoe. In the third month a person can start wearing the shoe in training sessions, as well as controlled activities. In month four, a person can increase their runs from 15 to 20 minutes and begin weight

The minimal shoe provides great feedback to the brain on which muscles are being used and activated.

impact of a heel striker is 1.3 to 3 times our body weight with every step taken. For an individual that weighs 200 pounds, the force impact can be 600 pounds for every step. On average, a person takes 1500 to 2500 steps per mile. That’s a lot of impact! Mid striking, which is landing evenly on your entire foot, can reduce impact significantly and allows the body to use its shock absorber properly. Dr. Lieberman states in The Boston Globe that minimal shoes are not made for everyone and “the idea that if you run barefoot you will no longer get injuries is ridiculous.” Barefoot running and minimal shoe wearing can help determine what kind of ‘striker’ you are, by giving instant feedback on how you are striking the ground, which can help teach you to become a mid foot striker. The only way to get this feedback is by running on hard surfaces or a track; you will not get the feedback from soft surfaces or grass. From this feedback, the minimal shoe can make us a more efficient runner by teaching proper foot striking. Minimal shoes are also great for weight lifting and strength training, due to the flatness of the shoe and the ground reaction force you get. When lifting in a running shoe, a person has the tendency to tilt forward in squatting pattern activities, due to the elevated cushion at the heel of a running shoe. This forward tilt can cause knee pain and other alignment issues. The minimal shoe provides great feedback to the brain and the skeletal muscular system on which muscles are being used and activated. After the ankle and foot have gone through mobilization exercises, we have seen a decrease in joint pain in some individuals.

This progression can take 6 months to a year before a person is able to do all activities in a minimal shoe. When a person first gets a minimal shoe, the first month should be spent only walking in them for brief periods of time. In the second month a person can start doing some light jogging for 5 to 10 minutes in

Remember the 10% rule! The 10% rule is not to increase distance or time by more than 10% at a time. Each year, 30% to 70% of runners suffer injury from repetitive stress. It is important to have recovery days and perform cross training on non-weight bearing equipment or swimming. When it comes to shoe selection ask yourself the following questions: • What is the purpose of the shoe? Is the shoe for a particular sport or type of training? • How do I strike the ground? Am I a mid foot striker or a heel striker? • Have I done the correct progression to a minimal shoe? These three questions are key when picking out the optimal shoe. If you follow the progression and the information in this article, you should not get hurt or be afraid of a minimal shoe. by Spencer Tatum, CSCS, Fitness Director at DC Ranch Village, earned his BS degree in Exercise Physiology from Ohio University. It is advised to stay away from uphill or down running for the first few months when starting to wear a minimal shoe. Uphill running can cause an Achilles tendon to rupture, and downhill can cause plantar fasciitis. It is important the follow the progression below for the first six months of wearing a minimal shoe.

training in them. In month five, light sprint work in the shoes such as 100 yard or 15 second sprints at 70% effort is ok. I suggest keeping the volume low at this intensity. In month six you can start doing most of your training in the minimal shoe. Keep in mind you might have to take your training slower. This progression depends on the person and their training level. The six month progression is important to prevent serious injury such as stress fracture, Achilles tendon tears, and plantar fasciitis.

TOUGH

MUDDER OF FOUR PROVING SHE’S UP TO ANY CHALLENGE, THIS GAINEY VILLAGE MEMBER IS AN ACTIVE ROLE MODEL FOR HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

When Charisse Crocker got a phone call this past Thanksgiving, she had no idea what was in store for her. Her niece had signed up to do an endurance event called Tough Mudder in January, but found out she was pregnant and had to get a replacement. Without giving it a second thought, Charisse said, “Sure thing.” And when she hung up the phone, she immediately googled Tough Mudder. Billed as “probably the toughest event on the planet,” Charisse found out that Tough Mudder events are “hardcore, 10 – 12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, half a million inspiring participants, and more than $2 million dollars raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world.”

20

Undaunted, Charisse began preparing herself for the 12.5-mile Tough Mudder Arizona, which was held at the old Toyota Proving Grounds in Mesa. She continued with her regular schedule of three days of Pilates training and two days of running each week, but upped her mileage to build her endurance. When event day came, she toughed it out with the best of them and downed two beers as a reward for finishing the grueling course.

We caught up with Charisse and talked to her about her approach to health and fitness, her willingness to take on new challenges, and how she’s helping her four children learn to live healthy and embrace all that life has to offer. the village: Have you always been athletic? charisse crocker: Yes, I swam and did track in school, mostly sprints. How did you discover Pilates? Actually, my husband turned me onto it, about three years ago. I was working out with a personal trainer, doing weights, but my husband kept talking about Pilates and finally convinced me to try it. I was totally hooked and gave up weights about a year later. What I love about Pilates is that you don’t get bulky. I’ve totally reshaped my body, and can honestly say that I love the way I look at age 43 more than I ever have before. Even my husband has noticed the changes, and that’s really saying something! How do you balance Pilates with your running? I take a private Pilates class with Niece Pecenka at the Gainey Village once a week, and sometimes I’ll take a reBarre class, which is kind of like ballet, Pilates and yoga all rolled into one. I also bought some of Niece’s DVDs and do a couple Pilates sessions at home. I usually do three days of Pilates and run twice a week, usually between four and six miles, depending on how much time I have. You’ve said that Pilates was what really helped you tackle the Tough Mudder event. Absolutely. I called Niece right away to thank her and to tell her that it was my saving grace! There were so many things in that race that demanded core strength and balance. They had an obstacle called ‘Twinkle Toes,’ where you had to walk on a very wobbly, narrow edge of a wooden beam over a pit of cold, muddy water. Everyone was falling in around me, but I was able to put my Pilates game face on and get across. Who were you doing the event with? I did the event with my real niece’s husband and another couple. The woman is 29 years old and in the Army, and her husband is an Army Ranger. When I met them on event day, I introduced myself as the weak link! Was there any doubt in your mind that you could do it? I knew I’d be fine physically. The way Niece teaches Pilates, she keeps upping the ante as you get stronger. But I had never done anything like scaling walls, so I wasn’t sure how I was going to handle some of the obstacles.

What did your family think about it? My husband was worried, but after it was over he was my biggest fan and posted tons of pictures on Facebook. My boys, who are 20 and 18, were proud of me even though they wouldn’t admit it. And my young girls, age 11 and 8, didn’t like the idea of it at all. When I got back, the first thing they wanted to know was if I got shocked or not.

One tree at a time!

It sounds like you’re a great role model for your kids… All of my kids exercise, and that’s really gratifying for me. One of my daughters is a level 7 gymnast, and my other daughter is a swimmer. My sons are both active, and when my oldest is home from college he’s at the Village all the time, working out or shooting hoops. We all eat pretty well, too, but we don’t diet. We just try to limit things like Coke and candy. The best part of it is that we live healthy because we enjoy it, and I think that’s why it’s just become part of our lives. What about your husband? It’s not as big a priority for him. After he did his stint with Pilates, he started a business and is deeply involved in that. He runs a company called COP 4x4, which builds custom Jeeps for people who like to go off-roading. That in itself keeps him pretty active! What do you do in your spare time? I just like hanging out with my friends. And at the Village, my social are the ladies in the Pilates classes. Will you ever do another Tough Mudder? I don’t have any plans to do it again, but maybe by the end of the year I’ll forget how Electroshock Therapy felt and I’ll be signing up again…My younger son was thinking about doing it with us this year but had a conflict, so maybe if he does it I’ll be more motivated.

spring 2012 BET TERLIFE | 21

What were some of the high points and low points for you during the course? I really liked running up the slippery quarter pipe. I wasn’t sure I could do it but it was really fun. On the negative side, I rolled my ankle at the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ obstacle, where you had to climb over burning cars and a bed of old tires. Fortunately, the ice-cold water from some of the other obstacles kept my ankle numb, so it didn’t swell up until the next day! And, I have to say, in the

‘Electroshock Therapy’ obstacle—where you have to run through a forest of wires that can tag you with 10,000 volts of electricity—I felt like I was being shot at. It jerked me every time I got hit and even brought me down to the ground one time. Honestly, finishing the entire event really felt good!

Yoga & Wine Event at DC Ranch, Jan 28 The DC Ranch Village yoga community recently gathered for a themed Flow class taught by Samantha Lang, followed by a guided wine tasting by club member and professional wine distributor, Craig Dziadowicz. “Detox / Retox” provided a fun and educational opportunity to draw parallels between the yogic experience of heightened physical awareness and the mindful experience of tasting the complexities of wine. The group packed the yoga studio to capacity, allowing for a great detox—deep breathing, twisting, lifting, and sweating it out for 75 minutes. After class, participants assembled in the conference room to taste four Italian wines carefully selected by Dziadowicz to match the flow and progression of a yoga class. Members and guests took full advantage of gaining new wine knowledge from our on-hand expert, as they enjoyed a special Saturday afternoon of yoga, wine, and socializing.
