MOVE Dancing

with the Stars Louis Van Amstel

Louis Van Amstel is a 3x world champion ballroom dancer. He appears regularly on Dancing with the Stars as one of the professional male leads. If you’ve never seen or followed the show here’s the low down. It has the highest viewer audience of any show on television. They do 2 seasons per year for 10 weeks each. He is also a choreographer for “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Springtime is here and what that means is a lot of great things are taking shape at the Village.

His fee is normally $750. Village ladies paid only $20 for a private class with only 40 participants. We had a great time!

Don’t forget to tell your friends and family about the Village lifestyle, and bring them in to experience it for themselves. Everyone deserves a healthy lifestyle—and now is the perfect time to become a Village member! We are so thankful for your member referrals, and as always will reward you for them. Branden Turley

Nowadays, one doesn’t have to look far to find a triathlon event. From sprint distance to a full Ironman event, there are different flavors for all different tastes. As one of the fastest growing sports in the world, triathlon offers a unique challenge to individuals. While many myths surround the existence of triathlon, the Ironman remains one of the most prestigious events in sports. Despite its recent attraction, the sport of triathlon has been around for almost 40 years. While many of these myths surrounding the sport of triathlon center on elite athletic ability and countless hours of training, individuals soon realize the sport highlights a wide array of athletes maintaining all different abilities.

Most would agree the beginning of a triathlon career is the most intimidating part of the sport. Athletes quickly learn once they immerse themselves into the world of endurance, the addiction begins to grow. There is soon an apparent indication as to the wide diversity of people accomplishing things a small percentage of some only dream about. Behind the glitter and glamour of this epic sport lies a truth rooted deep in the attitudes of every participant. With strong mental focus and dedication, people uncover an ability to push themselves to new limits of possibilities.

ONE Multisport is a triathlon based nonprofit organization founded on the idea anyone can compete no matter the athletic ability. From first-timers to first place, ONE Multisport represents one of the largest groups of triathletes in Arizona. If you are searching for a place to begin your triathlon career, visit the ONE Multisport Facebook page. There you will find a plethora of resources dedicated to the continued support of triathletes of all abilities. Don’t be intimidated by the unknown. Put on your trunks, saddle up on your bike, and slip your shoes on. You’re in for ONE heck of an adventure. All you have to do is tri!

This meet attracts over 1000 swimmers from seven states around the southwestern US and Mexico. Swim Neptune won the overall team championship by over 100 points. Village members Zachary and Olivia Paliscak each won their age group “high point” competition overall. Lost Dutchman is considered the last big meet before the Regional and State Championship meets in March. FOR

TENNIS

EVERYONE

The Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club has been the place for tennis since 1991. With 15 hard courts and over 800 active tennis memberships, you’ll never be lacking for a game! We offer programs and lessons for everyone from 4 to 84! If you just want social tennis, there’s plenty of that as well. The Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club is also an official U.S.T.A. Tennis Welcome Center. Anyone interested in learning the game is welcome on our courts! We offer beginning classes to members and non-members with our USA Level Series.

Often times adults are a little intimidated to start a new sport later in life. Our USA Level One class teaches you everything you need to know to get started in the game in six weeks. These group classes are very fun and friendly! You don’t even need a racquet to get started. If you’ve got a little experience or used to play years ago, our USA Level Two Class is for you. This class teaches doubles skills and strategy so you’ll be able to play games with your family or friends. These classes are open to members and non-members year round.

Lessons The Village has an outstanding staff of USPTA certified tennis professionals who teach private, semi-private as well as group lessons. Lessons are available to members and non-members.

Tennis Socials Throughout the year we offer fun and social tennis events based on various themes. Some of these include the French Open La Fete in May, Breakfast at Wimbledon Social on July 4th, U.S. Open Mixer in September, Oktoberfest and Wild Turkey Tourney around Thanksgiving. In these mixed doubles events players are divided into skill level groups so you’ll have fun, yet competitive tennis. Some events require partners and others are just “luck of the draw”. All socials start with tennis followed by a delicious feast and party festivities!

Tennis Tournaments For the more serious players in the group, we offer competitive tournaments throughout the year including our annual Club Championships. Beginning in February each year, we host our Mixed Doubles, Singles and Doubles Club Championships, one per month. These tournaments draw players of all levels as each tournament is divided into NTRP categories. This way, players of all abilities can become Club Champions in their appropriate divisions. These weekend tournaments draw players from 3.0 to 5.0 +, and spectators always are delighted with the level of play. Each tournament ends with a player’s party during the finals, so those who don’t make it that far still have a great time! We also host a Fall Tennis Championships in November.

Men’s Singles Ladder Our top players at the club have formed a very active singles challenge ladder that plays year round. This ladder is for players 4.5 and above and currently has over 40 active players on it!

As tennis is a sport for life, we love to get the juniors started young so they’ll retain the skills throughout adulthood.

Junior Development Our Junior Development Program runs September through May each year and teaches children everything they need to develop an all-around game. Children 4 – 6 years old start out in the Pee Wee Program where students learn basic hand-eye coordination and stroke production. Each student receives their very own racquet to take home and practice with mom and dad. The Beginners classes for 7 – 12 year olds are designed to prepare students for match play. Our match play levels, Strokers and Challengers, Junior Varsity and Varsity are designed to develop the basic strokes into an all around game.

Summer Junior Tennis Camp Do you think you might have a future Andre Agassi or Serena Williams in the family? If so, you’ll want to enroll your child in the Village’s Summer Tennis Camp. Campers spend 2.5 hours per day working on their games. Juniors are divided into skill levels so everyone can progress at their pace. This is open to junior players of all levels and runs throughout the summer. Get ready to enjoy these great tennis options at the DC Ranch Village Tennis Center coming soon!

Our in-house tennis league program is booming! Six-week league sessions are offered year round at levels from beginners through advanced players. Get rid of the negative messages from society. What I mean by this is

STOP reading magazines that contain images of celebrities that you compare yourself to. This also includes TV and movies—stop watching them and watch a program that does not make you feel insecure about your body type.

Stop the body bashing. Instead, develop a support system of friends that compliments the way you look. Quite often, we engage in conversations with our friends that bashes the way we look, or about how much we ate over the weekend or how we feel fat in our jeans. This type of talk only makes you feel worse about your insecurities. Instead, have conversations about how good you feel, how you pushed hard in your group fitness class and that you felt confident putting on an outfit when you went out over the weekend.

3

Honor your hunger. Many times we eat out of boredom, loneliness, and/or stress. Or we have had a long day and when we finally take the time to sit down and eat, we end up eating too much. This leads to emotional eating. Start to recognize the difference between your physical hunger cues and your emotional hunger by becoming mindful of your eating habits.

THE EXPERT

PERFORMANCE What are good exercises to do in the gym that will improve one’s golf game? Each golf specific program must start of with the basics. For this article we will focus on three, Flexibility, Stability and Mobility. These are essential minimums if you want to increase your on course golf performance. FLEXIBILITY Dynamic flexibility to be exact. Lunge With Rotation: This is a basic lunge with a slow rotation of the arms toward the front leg. A light medicine ball, dowel or golf club may be held in the hands during this exercise. MOBILITY Let’s focus on the hips for this one. Single Leg Stork Stance: This exercise is performed while standing on the right foot, slightly bending the right knee and stretching the left leg back extending the hip while bending forward with the upper body and reaching forward with the arms.

Stability Ball Roll-Outs: This exercise integrates the rest of the body with the core. Start on your knees in front of an exercise or stability ball. With your heels together and glutes fired, place your hands together, palms facing one another, on the top of the ball and slowly lower your body and roll the ball away from you. Hold the position with arms extended and core tight. Without breaking the imaginary straight line between your knees hips and shoulders, press hard against the ball with your arms and push yourself back up to the erect starting position.

How does exercising help one’s golf game? Just like spending quality time on the range to improve your golf game, you should also devote time in the fitness center exercising to improve your golf fitness. The benefits of a good golf specific program include improved strength, flexibility, mobility and power. This can translate to improved consistency, distance and most importantly a decreased incident of injury enabling years of improved golf performance and fun on the course.

Does stretching help with one’s golf game? All golfers, young and old, can benefit from an increase of flexibility. Stretching techniques along with increasing the body’s mobility can help increase a golfers turn, improving the back swing and increasing power. This equals more shoulder turn in the backswing, clubhead speed on the downswing and all resulting in more power with less effort.

More benefits from a well-executed golf fitness program. • Decreasing your handicap • Avoiding chronic or acute golf related injuries • Increasing body awareness and control

his smile and generosity forever in our hearts Some people’s work on earth is done much quicker than others. Some people just have a way about them, a kindness, a generosity, an infectious smile and laugh, that no matter what kind of day you are having, this person seems to lift your spirits. Some people have the biggest heart, are completely unselfish and have an ability to make everyone feel included. Peter Glenn was one of these people. We are deeply saddened by the passing of our long time employee and Village family member, who has been an integral part of the Village family for over 10 years. It seems everyone has stories of good and happy times with Peter, as he brought such joy to the Village Clubs. No matter who you were, Pete had a smile, constantly making friends, making people laugh, and making an impact on everyone he came in contact with. We could fill this newsletter with people’s stories of Pete, their experiences with him, the nicknames he gave everyone, and the all-around great person that Pete was.

At the Village, Pete could be seen at the Café, on the basketball court, helping one of his co-workers, or just hanging out talking to people, making sure they were laughing and having a good day. Pete was an integral part of the Village everday and he will be tremendously missed.

• Increasing your peak performance

We should all strive to be like Peter Glenn and the kind of person he was.

5 KEYS

TO SUCCESS

I AM TIRED AND TOO BUSY, AND DON’T KNOW HOW TO GET STARTED!

LOSE THE FAT AND KEEP IT OFF!

We have all heard about thousands of workout programs and diets to lose fat. It is now time to hear what really works and why it works. I use a simple formula to get people to lose weight and keep it off. I call it the Hierarchy of Fat Loss. It’s very simple and works.

1

Diet

4

High Intensity Interval Training

Diet is the most important part of any fat loss program. If your diet is horrible, it does not matter how much you train. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, it is important that you have a healthy diet. The food you eat not only manages your weight but also affects your immune system.

2 3

See #1 again

I cannot stress how important it is that you eat healthy foods. Seventy to eighty percent of achieving your weight loss and fat loss goals is based on your nutrition.

Start where you are!

If the gym is too much for you, start with a walking program or change a few things in your diet. Remember the Hierarchy of Fat Loss!

Hire a coach. Here are a few guidelines when hiring a coach:

Spencer Tatum works at DC Ranch Village and can be reached at statum@dmbclubs.com

• Do they have a degree in exercise physiology? • How many years of experience do they have? • Do they have a current national certification? The certification should be much more than a weekend course.

• Can they show you they’ve achieved results for previous clients?

If you cannot afford to hire a coach, get a workout buddy and set up a regular time to exercise.

Do activities that you like. Training does not have to be weights and cardio. It can be playing basketball, hiking, running, tennis, or any other movement activity. If you only have 30 minutes, make that time count. Most of the time the best training program is a consistent training program. Mindset is key! This starts with setting goals and having the mindset that everything you are doing with your day is taking you one step closer to your goals. Develop the mindset that you are not just exercising but training towards the person you want to become. Small decisions every day make big changes happen!

Steady-State Cardiovascular Training

5

Steady-state cardio is a continuous, fixed-intensity activity. This is the last method of training that I would choose for quick weight loss. It is true that you will lose weight from cardio training if you burn more calories than you eat. However, one pound of fat equals 3500 calories, therefore you need to burn an extra 500 calories a day for seven days to lose one pound of fat. Regular cardio training burns calories but does not create the afterburn effect or promote/maintain lean muscle tissue. Cardiovascular training alone will not get you the same “bang for your buck” as resistance training or interval training.

spring 2013 BET TERLIFE 19

18 | BET TERLIFE spring 2013

Resistance Training

Resistance training is the first place I recommend that you start. You may have heard differently, but you will not make the same long-lasting changes with cardiovascular training as you will with resistance training. Why resistance training over cardiovascular training? Resistance training will increase your resting metabolic rate and speed up your metabolism for 38 hours following your workout. Your resting metabolic rate determines how many calories your body burns naturally. Resistance training increases (or maintains) the amount of lean muscle tissue you have, and more lean muscle tissue burns more calories. Why? Because it takes more energy to maintain lean muscle tissue than fat. Also, resistance training creates the 38-hour afterburn effect which I mentioned above. I love this because it means you are still burning calories the next day no matter what you are doing.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a quick and easy way to burn fat. It is not as good as resistance training but still an effective method. HIIT will cause an increase in your heart rate. This type of training is short and sweet, but also very effective. An example of HIIT is the 30/30 program. A 30/30 program involves multi-joint movement at a tough pace for 30 seconds and then resting for 30 seconds. A basic 30/30 program is normally performed for five rounds. It only takes five minutes of this program to feel the effects. HIIT also causes the afterburn effect for 38 hours postworkout similar to resistance training. The reason HIIT is not on the same level as resistance training is because it does not promote or maintain lean muscle tissue.

People often tell me that they struggle with getting started in a training program because the gym intimidates them. The gym can be scary and it can be tough to get started, but it’s like anything else—you start somewhere. The key thing to remember is that your starting point is not your ending point. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

WATERSAFETYTIPS FIRST

FARMERSMARKET is huge success!

As we head into the summer and our attention turns back to the sparkling pools at the Village or your own backyard pool it’s important to remember that you must always watch children around water. Let’s make this a fun and safe summer. Check out http://www.swimforlife.org/ for more water safety info.

Safer Water Safer Water refers to the protection against an unauthorized entry to a pool or spa by a child that has little or no swimming skills. There are many types of protection available including barrier fencing with latching gates, alarms, door locks and pool covers.

You can look forward to the monthly market supporting the theme of fresh wholesome food choices that supports your desire to eat better. Your purchase directly supports the market which supports local business. You can talk to the farmer, bee keeper, or the maker. You feel a better connection to the food that you put in your body. The foods all taste better, and are better for you, and you can eat more of the good stuff. The next market dates are Thursday, April 18, and Thursday, May 16. For more information contact Kevin Shepard, the market manager, at kshepard@dmbclubs.com

Safer Kids Safer Kids involves both caretaker and the potential victim, the child. Constant adult supervision by one with swimming ability, swim skill attainment through on going lesson programs by qualified instructors, education of both parents and children as to proper behavior in and around the water are key components.

Safer Response Safer Response is the preparation for the event of a drowning accident. Rescue techniques such as CPR and rescue breathing should be learned and reviewed, developing an action plan and having rescue equipment on hand are also important. Kids can be “Safer” but NEVER “Safe”. The “r” is safer reminds you of the RISK. No matter what you do you child is never “drown proofed”…all children, no matter how well they think they can swim, require constant supervision around any type of water.

All Village clubs offer year-round swim lessons for babies through adults. Village swim lessons will educate you and your children about water safety and increase swimming ability. Small classes and private lessons are offered. Contact hzemaitis@ dmbclubs.com for schedules and more information.

The first monthly farmers market at DC Ranch Village (southwest section of the parking lot) brought thirty-five vendors that had a wonderful variety of natural and local food choices. The only complaint was that the market should be open every week or at least every other week.

Our collection follows centuries-old, food-grade formulations that have been traditionally used to address acute and chronic pain. Specific blends have been created for muscle, lymph, bone, bruising and circulation. Utilizing ingredients like Arnica, an anti-inflammatory and Frankincense to relax muscles and connective tissues, these applications when combined with acupressure will maximize the results of your treatment.

Add-on to any treatment 20.00 Full body application 90.00 They can be added to any massage, facial or body treatment to essentially reduce pain and inflammation due to anything from arthritis to having just completed a heavy work out. LONG THE KING OF CARDIO! Jumping rope saved Gary Martinez from a heart attack at age 27. Now he’s on top of the world with a new addition to the family, a new career, a new body and a new outlook on life.

But things are finally settling down for this DC Ranch Village member, who’s starting a new family, settling down in a new job, and winning the battle over his body with rigorous workouts that include marathon jump rope sessions that can last more than 90 minutes. He’s also taking his brush with death very seriously, with a commitment to warn kids not to make the same mistake he did when it comes to steroids. Gary’s

football coaches introduced him to the performanceenhancing drugs when he was a senior in high school. And even though he only used for a year and a half and followed The Steroid Bible religiously—the steroids nearly killed him nine years later. We caught up with Gary right around his fifth anniversary of joining the Village, to find out how he’s overcome adversity to become the DC Ranch Club’s unofficial Cardio King. the village What was it like having a heart attack at age 27? gary martinez It was surreal. I was like, ‘Why me?!’ I was down to 180 pounds and was in the best shape of my life, so of course I didn’t think anything serious was happening to me. About a week before Christmas in 2007, every three or four hours I’d feel my

So how come you got sick? I had a condition called Ventricular Tachycardia, or V Tach, which was caused by scar tissue in my branch arteries. The steroids and supplements I took in high school and college, combined with dramatic weight fluctuations over the years, caused so much stress on my heart that I developed coronary artery disease at a very early age. But for reasons even my cardiologist couldn’t understand, my heart was working as its own defibrillator. I would have died if it wasn’t for all the cardio strengthening I’d been doing for more than six months before the event. How are you doing today? Real good. I’m pretty much cleared for all physical activity. I still take baby aspirin and I get my heart monitored every year, but I’m off the beta-blockers and Lipitor. I feel real lucky to be alive, and I’m taking advantage of every minute by spending as much time as I can with my family. I also see kids who I know are using steroids and I want to figure out a way to save them from themselves. Is the allure of steroids really that powerful? It is, especially for guys who are 18 or 19. I was afraid of needles when I started using, but it was such an adrenaline rush I got over that fear right away. I didn’t think about how dangerous the drugs were. A close friend of mine kept at it and went into bodybuilding. Then he went into the army and obviously couldn’t use anymore. He got depressed, and committed suicide after a fight with his dad when he was home from Boot Camp. It was tragic. Why did you start using and what made you quit? Football got me started. I wanted to play inside linebacker and but at 170 I wasn’t heavy enough. On steroids I got to a solid 195, but it was a struggle for me to keep making the weight I needed to be. I figured I’d never have a chance at turning pro, so I gave up my dream of college athletics in my freshman year at ASU and focused on school instead.

What happened then? Then I just bloated up. I let myself go physically. I found comfort in food. I just didn’t care anymore and I definitely lost confidence. I’d go to the gym, but I was just going through the motions. It was definitely a confusing time for me, but fortunately I had a supportive girlfriend and I started seeing a therapist. I think it’s a godsend to have an unbiased person you can talk to about the highs and lows of life.” When did you finally refocus and join the Village? I joined the Village the day before Valentine’s Day in 2007. It’s funny, but I used to be an employee of the Gainey Village when I was in high school and college. I started out at the Towel Desk and ended up as a Fitness Floor Attendant. Anyway, I was offered a membership as part of a compensation package for a job with an online pharmaceutical company. I was quite overweight when I joined, pushing 265! It’s funny, but they still have the picture of me at that weight in the Club computer system, so a lot of the new front desk people don’t recognize me when they scan my membership card. Why don’t you change the picture? They keep asking me to, but knowing that it’s there is motivating for me. It’s a reminder of what I’ve been able to accomplish.” How were you able to lose 95 pounds? I was able to drop about 40 pounds on my own pretty quickly. Then I got introduced to Dr. Michael Nelson. We hit it off right away, and it didn’t hurt that most of his other clients were incredibly beautiful women. For the first three months, he pushed me so hard I’d actually throw up during our workouts. We trained two or three times a week, and he’d check on me all the time with reminder texts to eat right and get my workouts in. He kept me accountable. He even came to visit me in the hospital on Christmas Eve when I was dealing with my heart problem. He gave me a Superman shirt as a gift! The real turning point in my fitness came when Michael introduced me to April Feldman, the jump rope girl. She taught me how to do it, even though it took me a few months to be able to jump longer than a minute and a half. What are your workouts like now? I’m always trying to take things to the next level. I start every workout with the jump rope, and I always rotate cardio in between lifting. It’s very intense! And I’ve taken on a new friend in the Jacobs Ladder machine. I kick my ass on that thing and push myself to do 140 to 150 feet per minute. What’s next for you? I’m enjoying the stability I’m creating in my life right now. My eight-year-old daughter works out with me and I’m so proud that she’s into eating right and exercising. I had another daughter three months ago, and that’s incredibly exciting. I’m spending a lot of time with my family, and I’m looking forward to starting my new job. And like I said earlier, I want to help kids make better choices than I did when it comes to their bodies. I’m in a really good place right now, and I’m savoring every minute of it.

Gary Martinez has been riding a rollercoaster pretty much all of his 31 years. He moved between Arizona and Southern California multiple times when he was growing up. He’s already made more than a few career changes. And his adult weight has gone up and down over the years across a 95-pound range, from 170 on the low end to 265 at the high end.

heart flutter and then I’d black out for 10 to 15 seconds. I thought I had an iron deficiency, so I ate a lot of red meat, fish and vegetables. But nothing helped and the condition just got worse. It got to the point where it was happening every 15 minutes, and I was starting to get concerned. I remember being at my folks’ house in Scottsdale, telling my dad about it. He told me to go home and sleep it off. But as I was driving home I got the chills, I felt like I was going to throw up, and I had a shooting pain in my shoulder. Fortunately, I was right near Scottsdale Healthcare Shea and decided to check into the ER. They performed an ECG on me, and because of the abnormal results the nurses assumed that my problem may have been drug induced. After only a couple of minutes in the waiting room, they took me in to monitor my heart rate. While the doctor interviewed me, my symptoms occurred three times and then everything started to go in slow motion. I heard the doctor yell, ‘Code Blue!’ and about a dozen people rushed in. Someone ripped my gown off, and someone else put a defibrillator on me to save my life.

to do in case of an emergency? Each year, at least 250,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States. It can happen to anyone, at any time and not just to adults. CPR, if started promptly, can help by keeping blood containing oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. However, CPR by itself is not sufficient to correct the underlying problem. AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators) provide an electric shock that can help the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. The Village at DC Ranch offers CPR/AED classes every month. The next three classes are: APR 17, 12 – 2 PM, MAY 23, 5 – 7 PM JUNE 12, 12 – 2 PM
