Features the detoxifying and balancing effects of essential oils from Provence France including Lavender, Everlasting, and Petitgrain. This synergy of aromatics blends into a warm, gentle sugar scrub that exfoliates and hydrates the skin.

Choose from four complete journeys showcasing all pre-selected essential oils blends, scrubs, and unique massage thoughtfully designed by our YON-KA Paris team of experts.

An aromatherapeutic body massage featuring Chinese Bamboo sticks for enhanced toning and sculpting follows. Emphasizing the lower body, the warm bamboo perfectly follows the contours of the legs. These specialized massage techniques are both vibrational and gentle, bringing lightness and energy to the large muscles of the body that transports you to oxygen-rich forests and the healing forces of nature. You’ll leave this luxurious fullbody treatment toned and with a deep sense of relaxation.

A botanical-rich gel scrub gently eliminates lifeless cells while also infusing the skin with lasting moisture. This precedes a deep, relaxing, and sensorial face and neck massage.

These techniques designed to eliminate blockages of the body’s subtle energy or “Chi” will awaken your senses, free you from stress and support you during times of physical or mental fatigue.

It also soothes damaged, irritated, or dry, dehydrated skin, and is the perfect ally for naturally fragile or traumatized skin from peels, lasers, or over-exposure to the sun.

Citrus Grove-Energizing

Body awareness: the key to preventing Injury

Breathing connects the muscular core of your torso to your spine, infusing your body with oxygen and getting it ready for action. Be aware of your breathing during every exercise to maximize results. You can purchase Pilates DVDs for home use or you can find a professional to guide you.

Pilates exercises must be executed with concentration and precision. If done this way, these exercises will stimulate the mind/ body connection and will ultimately create better posture and ease of movement. Most people who do Pilates exercises regularly have healthier movement patterns and fewer injuries.

Here are 3 Pilates exercises you can try at home

Pilates Rollback

Sit on the floor with your knees bent, pull your belly in and exhale as you roll your torso back with arms reaching forward. Inhale to roll up to sitting. Repeat 10 times.

Pilates Rollback with Rotation

Lie on your back with your knees bent. Exhale, tilt your pubic bone up, and press your low back into the floor. Hips, then torso, curl off the floor without arching your low back. Inhale. Your head, shoulders, feet, and hands are on the floor. Exhale as you articulate your spine downward. Repeat 10 times.

LindaPILATESHertzbergINSTRUCTOR

Pilates is known for exercises that mobilize your spine in all these ways.

Hip lifts with spinal articulation

Your spine is meant to flex forward, back, sideways, and rotate, so it’s important that you do exercises that increase your strength and mobility in all these directions to maintain youthful suppleness. One more important way to move your spine is sequential, bone by bone from the scull down and from the tail up. This process is called “spinal articulation”.

In a very small nutshell, the goal of Pilates is to strengthen and align your body.

The importance of breathing

TRAINER SPOTLIGHT

Pilates at home: is it for you?

Pilates was developed decades ago by a German immigrant named Joseph Pilates. Joe was a boxer and circus performer with an intellectual curiosity about how human bodies move. Self-educated, he invented equipment that helped him rehabilitate injured people in the United Kingdom in the 1920s. He brought his experience and ideas to New York in 1925 when he and his wife Clara opened a studio that operated until 1966.

Sit on the floor with your knees bent, pull your belly in and exhale as you roll your torso back and rotate your torso to the right. Look back and reach one arm back as the other arm reaches forward. Inhale, sit up. Alternate sides 10 times.

You’ve probably heard of Pilates. In the last 20 years, this system of exercises has gone from obscurity to being a universally recognized form of training with highly-trained instructors all over the globe (including me).

HEALTHY SCHOOL LUNCH IDEAS TO NOURISH YOUR KIDS

To create a balanced meal, we want to ensure we include items from each food group. Check out the helpful chart below of example foods. Have your kids get involved by choosing what they want from each column! By balancing protein, carbohydrates, fiber (1+ cups of veggies and fruit!), and fats, you can ensure your child is fueled for their day of learning and fun!

Balanced Meal Ideas

¼ cup, carrots diced

• Yogurt Ranch Dip (recipe below)

1 - 5 oz can of tuna (or sub shredded chicken)

½ cup quick oats

• Whole Grain Pita Wedges

• Snap Peas and Grape Tomatoes

• Cracker Stacks: Whole Grain Crackers, Deli Turkey, Sliced Cheese

1/3 cup creamy sunflower seed butter

Slow Digesting Fiber, Fats, and Protein

1-2 tbsp hummus

Try

Need inspiration for lunch box ideas? out one of these three combinations!

• Sliced Bell Peppers

Combine dip mix with greek yogurt and stir Serve with assorted vegetables.

Combine all ingredients and enjoy with crackers, on bread, in a pita, over greens, or with sliced veggies.

1 container (8 ounces) fat-free Greek yogurt

½ cup diced celery diced

Lunchbox #3

• Raspberries with Dark Chocolate Chips

• PB Banana Roll Up: whole grain tortilla, nut butter of choice, banana, & cinnamon

1 ½ cups tightly packed Medjool dates, pitted

The key is to focus all meals and snacks on protein, fats, and fiber (from healthy carbohydrates and produce). These are the nutrients that digest slowly, meaning they keep stomach’s satisfied, blood sugar regulated, and minds focused on learning. Oftentimes “kid-friendly” foods are mainly simple carbohydrate focused (i.e: cereal, waffles, toast, pb&j, crackers, etc) which cause children to get hungry quickly after eating and can cause disruption in their focus, mood, and energy. Instead we want to incorporate slow digesting nutrients when our child eats a carbohydrate. Such as topping toast with avocado, pairing a pb&J with yogurt, dipping crackers into hummus, etc.

½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp dried dill, ¼ tsp salt)

some

• Oatmeal Snack Balls (recipe below)

• Hummus Tuna Salad (recipe below)

Lunchbox #2

¼ teaspoon fine sea salt

Lunchbox #1

¼ cup chocolate chips

Place the pitted dates into the bowl of a large food processor fitted with an “S” blade, then process until they form a sticky ball. Use a spatula to break up the date mixture a bit, then add in the sunflower seed butter, oats, and salt. Process again until a sticky batter is created. Add chocolate chips and pulse a few times to incorporate the chocolate chips into the mixture. Scoop the dough by tablespoons and roll them into balls. These balls will keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

25VILLAGE CLUBS FALL 2022

Surprise your guests with unique twists on some traditional recipes. This will make your dishes exciting and memorable while maintaining a familiar feel to what’s traditionally served. Try an unexpected Asian flare to the main event with a Miso Butter Turkey with Shiitake Mushroom Gravy or put a Southwestern spicy spin on your Cornbread Stuffing by adding green chiles. Add an Italian-inspired side dish to the spread with Shredded Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta and Pecorino.

If you find yourself with less people around your table this year but want to still enjoy a special Thanksgiving meal together, there are many ways you can scale down your dinner instead of making a large turkey. You can break from a traditional turkey by making each guest their own Cornish Hen with Apple Cranberry Rice Stuffing. Or keep turkey on the menu without all the work or leftovers with this Slow Cooker Turkey Breast. You can combine two dishes by making Cranberry Dressing Stuffed Turkey Breast.

A great hostess is thoughtful of their guests and their specific preferences. Even if you have someone eating with you that is vegetarian, dairy- free or gluten-free, you can cater to their individual needs while ensuring your dishes are as tasty as ever. A vegetarian or vegan at your table can swap turkey for Stuffed Acorn Squash as their main event. Everyone can safely dish up vegan Creamed Corn and Wild Rice Stuffing. And you can make sure that all your gluten- and dairy-free guests can still enjoy dessert with this Pumpkin Pie.

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and corn… we all know the veteran dishes to a typical Thanksgiving dinner. But what if that seems too time consuming, a little boring or like too much food for a smaller crowd? Or what if there’s a guest attending your dinner with special dietary needs? It’s okay to get creative and switch up what you serve! This year, we’ve got some tips on how to shake up your routine for Thanksgiving dinner and create a delicious meal for everyone gathered around your table.

Add Some Unexpected Flavors

Take Care of Your Guests

NOT YOUR TYPICAL THANKSGIVING DINNER

A Feast for Few

While some avid cooks enjoy spending days in the kitchen to prepare for a big turkey dinner, that doesn’t need to be the case. There are countless shortcuts you can use to cut back on time in the kitchen — which equates to more quality time with your loved ones! Let your slow cooker do the work with these Slow Cooker Garlic Mashed Potatoes. You can even speed up the mashing process by using an electric mixer. Or skip any peeling or chopping with these easy Sauteed Baby Carrots with Dill. Scratch-made Cranberry Sauce is quite quick and simple and can add a homemade touch to your plate even if you go for some other pre-made dishes.

Lighten it Up

While a typical Thanksgiving dinner can send you straight into a food coma, it is possible to make your meal just as crave-able while leaving you feeling great. There are numerous ways to lighten up your favorite dishes. For example, give lower carb Cinnamon Roasted Butternut Squash a try instead of the typical sugary sweet potato casserole. Or bypass the rich creamy mushroom sauce and friend toppings of traditional green bean casserole with this full of flavor Garlicky Green Beans with Slivered Almonds. An Autumn Harvest Salad is a be a showstopper while helping guests fill their plates with nourishing vegetables.

No matter what your holiday dinner looks like this year, the Village wishes you a memorable and delicious Thanksgiving shared with your loved ones.

1. Simply focus on your breath and as thoughts come up, allow them to pass through.

3. So Hum meditation. As you breathe in, say to yourself, “so” and as you exhale, you say “hum”. So Hum means, “i am that” which means that you are part of and belong to everything in this awesome, amazing university. So beautiful!

TRAINER SPOTLIGHT

I had a lot of lofty and just down-right incorrect ideas about meditation: magical enlightenment from the get-go, immediate answers to all my problems, and instantaneously turning into the most peaceful, loving, positive person on the planet. I thought i had to have a certain belief system, way of life, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Keep it simple!

Meditation... Journey Worth Taking...

27VILLAGE CLUBS FALL 2022

Plan for a consistent time of day to practice and be patient. Habits are built through consistency and the benefits of this particular practice are mind-blowing; reduced stress, greater creativity, productivity, kindness, and self-awareness, ability to manage negative thoughts, and the list goes on.

2. Envision breathing in and out of your heart space (yep... It’s in your heart area and your fourth chakra) and seeing your heart expanding and receiving and sending love.

Truth is... Meditation is for everyone, any time, anywhere. The only qualification you need is to be a human being and, I’m pretty sure if you are reading this, you meet this qualification. So, let’s get started!

Get an app. Use that electronic device for the good stuff. Apps have all kinds of meditations, courses, etc. My favorite is Insight Timer. So... Get your meditation on! Namaste

Habit/Practice Worth Building

Don’t get all judgy on yourself. All is well and good in meditation. Some days you experience some amazing sense of peace and the next you may or may not. You are just being the observer... Not the judge.

The three simplest meditation practices

Combining nutrition with your dedication to fitness is the key to looking and feeling your best. The Village offers nutrition counseling based on your individual needs and can help you develop a customized program in partnership with your personal trainer to help you achieve your fitness and health goals. For healthy eating to be a lifelong commitment, Jamie believes we must make our daily meals totally scrumptious and nourishing. Get in touch with our Registered Dietitian.

Oftentimes, when someone is trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, snacks get a bad rap, but are they something to avoid? If we do need fuel between meals, what are the best things to reach for? Village dietitian, Jamie Miller, helps us with the top tips for choosing balanced snacks that will help us feel our best.

• Hard Boiled Egg with Everything But the Bagel Seasoning & Cucumber

Perfect Pairing

When reaching for a snack, it’s key to focus on foods that will help stabilize your blood sugar and also create long term satisfaction. Just grabbing crackers would fill you up in the moment, but the carbohydrate-focused food would cause your blood sugar to spike, then subsequently dip, thus leaving you hungry for more in no time at all. For best satisfaction of hunger, the key nutrients to aim for are fiber, healthy fats, and protein.

To create a well balanced snack, look to pair one volume-filled, lower calorie food with another more nutrient dense item. The volume from fibrous things like vegetables, fruit, or whole grain carbs will help fill the feeling of hunger with a lesser amount of calories. This will ensure the snack stays a proper size instead of quickly becoming as many calories as a meal. But it is important to also include a more nutrient dense item to keep you satisfied, such as something with protein or heart healthy fat.

Registered Dietitian

There’s a difference between “snacking” and having a snack. “Snacking” is often the haphazard reaching for foods that are appealing to the taste buds and easy to eat. When snacking, it’s also easy to lose track of the amount eaten while consuming highly palatable, calorie dense items. Alternatively, a smart snack has a distinct beginning and end planned. Village dietitian, Jamie Miller, suggests plating snacks just as you do a meal. When the snack has been portioned out, you’ll be much more likely to stick to the right amount of food your body needs at that moment.

Snack with a Purpose

Think of snacks as a “bridge” to get to the next meal. Snacks can actually be helpful to your health goals by ensuring you don’t get overly hungry and thus become more likely to overeat at the next meal. They also are a perfect way to “fill in the gaps” of your meals. For example, if you notice that breakfast was lower in protein, it’d be wise to focus on the protein at your mid morning snack. Or if you didn’t get much veggies at lunch, packing in the fiber filled produce at your 4pm snack break could be helpful.

This concept is what makes yoga so much more than physical exercise! It begins with a conscious desire to change something (a thought or intention), which motivates our actions, and helps us to move in a different direction. This can be relevant to transforming the body, our health, behavior and relationships, and all aspects of life.

Yoga breathing is helpful even outside of the yoga studio. High and/or constant low levels of stress can wreak havoc on our overall health. Embracing healthy habits, such as scheduled time for rest and relaxation (whether it’s a home practice or a gentle yoga class), is a great way to restore balance.

Yoga practice is self-examination with the growth potential - through simple observation of breath and sensations in the physical body, along with thoughts and emotions that arise. With enhanced awareness, we begin to evolve and create new patterns in our way of thinking and experiencing life.

TRAINER SPOTLIGHT

Yoga, what is it all about?

Yoga teaches us to connect mind and body with the breath. Simply observe each inhale/exhale, and practice controlling the rhythm with awareness (this is called pranayama). Learning how to breathe, so to speak, and how the body responds to the way we breathe - shape/ rhythm/depth/sound - is extremely empowering!

34 VILLAGE CLUBS FALL 2022

I hope you feel inspired to come try one of our many wonderful Village Yoga classes! See you soon in the Mind/Body Studio.

Taking time to relax the thinking brain can be like a “reset” for the nervous system. Some of the many benefits include improved digestion and quality of sleep, better stress management, enhanced immune system function, cellular regeneration, and balanced endocrine (hormone) response.

The word “Yoga” has many translations, most commonly “union” or “connection,” but it can also mean “change” or “transformation.” Oftentimes, I use the words “be present,” and “create balance.”

Takingothers.

Many people seek yoga for healing. Whether the intention is to improve strength/flexibility, heal an injury, sore muscles, or chronic pain, or perhaps release/manage stress and process emotions. The list of restorative benefits is limitless when it comes to developing a mindbody connection.

Rachel Woo OCOTILLO YOGA INSTRUCTOR

Today I’d like to share a little bit about Yoga, specifically the healing and restorative aspects, and invite you to explore one of our many Village yoga classes for yourself.

Yoga is/can be so much more than beneficial for the body (muscles/joints, etc.). Through the practice of awareness, we learn to unite our thoughts, words, and actions. What I believe to be the most healing aspect, is to ultimately be more kind and loving toward self and

the time to slow down and practice mindfulness, in classes like Yin (deep stretch) and Restorative (gentle healing) Yoga, develops patience and discipline, and helps us to connect to a sense of inner calm. It’s a safe place to come together to rest, relax, and rejuvenate - body, mind, heart, and spirit.
