ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

E

very January, masses of intelligent people will fall hook, line and sinker for the claims of some aggressive new weight-loss manifesto. But surely this isnt the month to eat salad? We’re in deepest darkest winter. We go for months without seeing the sun. We need cheering up. Yes, we might of stored up enough body fat to see us through until spring, but let’s wait until then when a salad is more appropriate. Did you know there is an art to weighing yourself: Weigh yourself fully clothed after dinner and again the next morning without clothes and before breakfast, because it’s nice to see how much weight you’ve lost overnight. Never weigh yourself with wet hair. When weighing, remove everything, including your glasses. In this case, blurred vision is an asset. Don’t forget to remove all jewellery as it could weigh as much as a pound. Buy only cheap scales, never the medical kind. Accuracy is the enemy and high quality scales are very accurate. Always go to the bathroom first. Weigh yourself after a haircut, this is good for up to half a pound of hair (hopefully). Exhale with all your might BEFORE stepping onto the scale. (Air has weight, right?) Start out with just one foot on the scale, then holding

onto a towel rail slowly edge your other foot onto the scale while slowly releasing the towel rail. Admittedly, this takes time, but it’s worth it. You will weigh at least two pounds less than if you’d stepped onto the scale normally. We work hard here at Village Link HQ to produce an entertaining magazine so that the current edition stays on the coffee tables until the next one arrives. This gives our advertisers the exposure they need to get the results for their business. Our advertisers often pass on the response their advert has generated which you can read on our website (village-link. co.uk). If you would like to advertise with us, then ring me on 01228 562904. I’m off now for a carrot and lemon-grass smoothie... yum! On second thoughts, make that a coffee and chocolate hobnob.

arlisle is steeped in history - literally. Wherever you go in the city centre, you are walking in the footsteps of Brigantian tribes, Roman soldiers, early missionaries, medieval traders, Cromwellian troops, Jacobite rebels and countless generations of ordinary people that once occupied this great Border city. Our story begins in the Iron Age when the Brigantes ruled over much of northern England. The Carvetti (a sub-tribe of the Brigantes) occupied the Eden Valley and probably regarded Carlisle as a place of some importance, as the name is linked to the Celtic god, Lugh. This evolved into ‘Caer Luel’ and then to the modern name of ‘Carlisle’.

Roman Frontier

When the Romans arrived in AD 72 they built a fort in the area between Tullie House Museum and the castle, and named it Luguvalium after Lugh. The southern gateway opened onto a road leading through the gardens of Tullie House and along Blackfriar’s Street to Botchergate and the route to London. Another Roman road crossed

4

the River Eden and came up what is now Scotch Street. Carlisle later became an important frontier settlement behind Hadrian’s Wall, a 78-mile long stretch of continuous wall between Wallsend and Bowness-on-Solway, completed in AD 122. The existence of a large Roman army in Carlisle attracted trade and industries to service their needs, and a substantial vicus or civilian town developed to the south-east of the fort. The remains of shops and dwelling houses have been excavated along Blackfriar’s Street and other Roman remains lie beneath the Market Hall and The Lanes shopping centre. With increasing prosperity, Luguvalium became a civitas (an important administrative and economic centre).

Medieval Town

Between 1122 and 1200, the city walls were erected, pierced by three gates (Scotch Gate, Irish Gate and English Gate) and defended by six towers on the vulnerable north-eastern perimeter. Outside the walls, a deep ditch provided additional defence. Town Dyke car park is built over (and named after) this ditch. In 1158, Carlisle gained a Royal Charter to hold a weekly market and a Great Fair in late August. Vegetables were sold in the Greenmarket, corn in English Street and meat from the shambles (outside House of Fraser). Wool, cloth and leather were important commodities and regularly exported to Scotland, Ireland and northern Europe. To protect trade, guilds were established for weavers, tailors, tanners, glovers, shoemakers (cordwainers), smiths, butchers and merchants, who met in the medieval half-timbered Guildhall.

LOOKING BACK

J

anuary is a time for reflection and planning for the coming year. Looking back, 2014 was special. Special in many ways, but none more so than being nominated for two awards at the first ever Carlisle Living Awards in the Autumn. The Jiggy gals teetered along to a glittering, ‘celebrity’ event. We were thrilled to accept, not one but two awards, Best Independent Retailer (small) and Best Place to Work (small). We were visited by a judge from the magazine, with nominations and comments from our customers clinching the deal! An award such as this is a big deal for a small boutique. Our award sits proudly in our shop window and tells the passing world that if honest, friendly, trust worthy, shopping is important to you then come on in! LOOKING FORWARD Running a small boutique has many challenges, most of which I embrace wholeheartedly. But what I do find difficult is resisting the need to copy high street chains with their constant sales, discounts, promotions and slashed price offerings. We have two seasonal sales a year, with a scattering of special promotions through the season. I believe our customers expect us to operate in this way. They understand we can

6

not offer monthly slashed rails and discounts. But what they do expect, rightly so, is respect for their loyalty and custom. Offering gestures, perhaps a free candle, a £5 off voucher, for example, shows our gratitude and this is very important to me. I want our customers to know that we appreciate and value them hugely.

TO-DO LIST by Megan, Butterworths Solicitors

T

he beginning of a New Year is traditionally a time to make new plans and get your private and legal affairs in order. On your essential ‘to do’ list should be making a Will or updating/ reviewing your current Will. In addition if you are over 50 years of age the making of a Power of Attorney is highly recommended. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document whereby you (while you still have mental capacity) can nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your affairs if you ever lost capacity. Unless you have one your loved ones would need to apply through the Court which could be a lengthy and costly process. Making a Will and creating a Power of Attorney will go a long way towards peace of mind for you and your

relatives. You can be certain that your assets will go to who you want and the responsibility for that will be in trusted hands. We at Butterworths can help you prepare both of these documents. If you bring the attached voucher with you we will give you a 10% discount on your legal fees. To discuss please ring Megan Wilkins or Grant Harrison on 01228 593939

Cut out this voucher and bring it with you to receive a 10% discount on Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney (only). Valid until 28th February 2015.

BEETROOT MARINATED SALMON GRAVALAX WITH ENGLISH MUSTARD MAYONNAISE

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

W

hy do Mum’s always get the blame? For instance: Child: “Where are my trainers?” Mum: “I don’t know”. Child: “Well I can’t find them, YOU must have moved them” Mum: “I didn’t move them, think back to when you last had them”. I am sure mums everywhere are nodding their heads in agreement. I think in part this can be blamed on the fact that Mum’s do have a sixth sense and probably nine times out of ten know where most things are anyway. My children have both now flown the nest, but I still find I get the blame for things out of my control. For example, my husband recently changed our car and, after spending hours looking online, went to London to pick our new car up. When he arrived home with it I was aghast to find it was huge, and I wondered how on earth I was going to drive it never mind back it into the drive! I was told however, that he only bought this particular car because I wanted four doors (rather than the two doors our previous car had) and so I only had myself to blame. Apparently it was nothing to do with the fact that he wanted a V8 engine. So it’s wives as well as Mum’s who always get the blame, it is just our lot in life! How times have changed, particularly on the food front. For example, remember the artic roll, black forest gateau, fondue, jam roly poly. Due to

8

the success of the Great British Bake Off a lot of the old recipes are coming back. I always find that the simple recipes are the best and here is a very simple Jam Roly Poly recipe which everyone will love. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Mix 150g sifted SR flour, with 75g vegetable suet and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Add enough water (about 100ml) to make a soft dough (not too sticky). Knead lightly on floured board and then roll to 1cm thickness to a rough 8”square. Spread a thick layer of jam over one side of the dough leaving a small border round the edge. Dampen the edge with a little water and then roll up loosely pinching the ends together. Place on a large piece of greaseproof paper, sealed edge down. Join the ends of the paper and twist, as you would a sweet wrapper. Put the pudding in a large loaf tin. Fill a roasting tin with boiling water and place at the base of the oven. Place the roly poly on the top rack and bake for 35/40 mins. Serve with custard.

INGREDIENTS (serves 6) • 1 Fresh Salmon – Scaled and Filleted with the skin left on A • good shot of Brandy • 85g Granulated Sugar • 85g Sea Salt • 2 Raw Beetroot – Peeled and Grated SAUCE • 150g Mayonnaise • 2 Tbs English Mustard METHOD 1. Mix in a bowl the sugar, salt, beetroot & brandy 2. Place Salmon skin side down in a deep dish. Spoon on the mix and rub into the salmon by hand 3. Cover with clingfilm and put in fridge for 24 hours 4. Take salmon from fridge and wash off salt mix 5. Slice off thin slices with a very sharp knife 6. Mix mayonnaise and English mustard together 7. Arrange salmon on plates and spoon over the English mustard sauce.

T

his was just one of several headlines taken from coverage of early detailed research into the possible impact of pension liberalisation – specifically what individuals are going to do with their pension fund after 6 April next year. After this date, those aged 55 and over will be able to take their entire pension as a lump sum. But, as always in not looking beyond the headline, there is a risk of missing the detail. In this case, it is the detail of the new legislation – such as how income from that pension pot will be taxed. Taking the whole fund at once might be the right thing to do for a few people; but before making any

THE LESS GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE AVERAGE PENSION POT AT RETIREMENT IS JUST £36,800

decision everyone needs to understand the options available. Let’s assume you have a fund of £100,000 when you come to take your benefits. The great news is that 25% of your fund – £25,000 in this example – can be taken taxfree. This leaves £75,000. If you take this as one lump sum it will be treated as income in the year that you take it. When added to your other sources of income in that year it’s highly likely you would pay higher rate Income Tax on a large proportion of it. I suspect that people’s enthusiasm for

cashing in their entire pension may dampen once they discover that 40% of their hard-earned money will go to the Treasury. I have a feeling most people who take advantage of the new flexibility will ultimately draw their pension at a rate that is more tax-efficient.

pension benefits overlooks the fundamental issue that people are not saving enough for retirement and not putting a sufficient fund in place.

COMPLEX CHOICES

There’s no question that he new rules being introthe duced by the government in April will give everybody more choice about how they plan for retirement. But with this increased flexibility comes greater complexity. The new pension legislation presents a number of taxplanning opportunities when you get to retirement; but if you’re not careful, without advice, you could end up making the wrong decision. The first thing to do is to go back to basics. By this I mean you need to decide when you want to retire and, more importantly, establish how much money you’re going to need to live off. In some ways this is the $64,000 question, but without knowing this it’s impossible to make the right decision about how you’re going to take the income from your pension fund.

FACING REALITY

But, worryingly, the focus on the new flexibility of

We all hope to have a long and happy retirement, but to do so we need to make sure that our money lasts as long as we do. The good news is, on average, we are all living longer than ever before; it is going to be quite possible for the majority of us to spend at least 20 years of our lives in retirement. The less good news is that the average pension pot at retirement is just £36,800* How benefits are taken from a fund of that size is far from the biggest problem. In reality, more and more of us are going to have to work longer because we haven’t saved enough. The key is making sure that during our working lives we are putting away

enough money so that when we do finally get to retirement, we can make the right decisions based on the comfort of knowing we have sufficient money to enjoy our later years. Retirement planning is all about making sure that when you are working you are putting enough money away for when you stop. The pay days you have until you retire are the number of opportunities you have to build the fund needed to create the lifestyle you’re hoping for. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances. * (source: Association of British Insurers – September 2014).

he astute amongst you will recall the startling fact that British bottoms are topping the European charts for being the biggest. We are now being told that our pampered pets are climbing up those very same charts. So with harnesses at the ready action is called for. Take a good look at your charge and follow that with a big cuddle. Then whisper kindly in their ear that this is something you are going to tackle together. Before this becomes one sided and in defence of the dog they do say dogs look like their owners. Do I need to say more? This is a win win.

British bottoms are topping the European charts for being the biggest To make this occasion happy follow the same rules you would apply to us humans. Make sure you have both eaten a couple of hours before you head out and are hydrated. If puddles are going to be in short supply take water with you. Truly Scrumptious and our new member of the family Betsy Biscuit wear harnesses. Mischa has a wide collar with a karabiner securing her lead for added strength. Be careful where you pick up pace. We tend to trot out of our village and get going on the quiet lanes. Should your charge see one of its friends you may find yourself running faster than intended. This can make you seem out of control. Lead upright – tuck your elbow in and keep the handle of your lead at chest height – Cruft style. You will all then avoid getting into a tangle. Watch out for signs of fatigue heavy panting (the dog not you) and tongue lolling - again the dog. As a cyclist I always check my tyres before I set out. You should check their paws before they go out. If they become dry use petroleum jelly to nurture them. So, you ask what if I haven’t got a dog, well with permission go and find one. There will be a dog at this very moment dreaming of open space and blue sky and a chance to have some fun. In return you will have a friend for life. T

THE WAVERLEY VIADUCT – SAVING OUR HISTORY

he Waverley line between Edinburgh and Carlisle closed in 1969 but traffic as far as Longtown MOD site continued until 1973. Since then, pedestrians have used the viaduct as an unofficial footpath, although there have been occasional efforts to prevent them doing so by the British Rail Board, the body responsible for the land, which erected steel fences at each end of the viaduct to permanently restrict access on health and safety grounds. Since that time the area known as Engine Lonning has become a nature reserve. From 1821 to 1853 the Carlisle Ship Canal passed through here and later the Carlisle to Silloth line ran along the bed of the canal as far as Drumburgh until closure in 1964. The name Engine Lonning stems from the lane leading down to this area which comprised Engine sheds, workshops, a coaling and water tower, sidings and a turntable as see in the 1962 picture of a goods train from Silloth. In recent years the Save the Waverley viaduct group have been campaigning for the re-opening of the viaduct to foot passengers. A year ago the Highways Agency, took over responsibility for redundant railway struciaduct V tures. Due to n o n Trai our lobbying it came to the top of the queue this year for renovation as a listed structure. Contractors were working on the via-

14

duct for more than 6 weeks and it is now in very good condition, so now is the time to get it re-opened. The existing permission for the barriers runs out in January 2015 and a charitable trust is now being set up to finance the re-opening of the viaduct as a footpath. The benefits to the footpath network will be enormous, as shown on the diagram. The Cumbria Coastal Way on the north bank will be linked to Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Trail on the south. One will be able to walk from Engine Lonning over the river to the Sidings Nature Reserve and on through Kingmoor South, Kingmoor and Kingmoor North reserves as far as Crindledyke. It will also be a traffic free short cut from Etterby to Newtown. A group, including former railwaymen, has recently been formed to interpret the history of Engine Lonning for future generations. The old waterwheel pit from the canal, the turntable walls and the foundations of many buildings are still to be seen among the trees so please support us once the Trust is formed. The history of our work so far can be found at www.savethewaverleyviaduct.co.uk

CROWN THIN

DEEP

ROOTED LOCAL ARBORIST Andrew Edgar, FROM ORCHARD TREE SURGERY AND LANDSCAPE SERVICES, SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE TO HELP SAVE OUR TREES

L

ove them or hate them, here in Cumbria trees are everywhere, from the most modern urban estates to the oldest country house. Living with them can be hard at times. They can block out the rise of the morning sun, give us the unending task of clearing up after them all autumn and we lie awake on long stormy nights waiting for yet another branch to crash through your greenhouse. But let’s remember what we love about them. The amazing varying shades of colour, the way in which they purify our air, the homes they provide for our wildlife and not forgetting the natural shields they form for our houses to keep out unwanted interest. As an Arborist (a tree surgeon to you and I) I’m regularly asked to remove a particular tree which is causing a problem. Many don’t necessarily want to ‘remove the tree’ but don’t feel they have much of a choice for instance, it may be blocking sun light, growing too close to bedroom windows or simply causing a headache (or more likely back ache) from picking up the mess it leaves (see what I did there). I try to explain there are ways in which we can manage our trees and

perform maintenance on them to reduce all of the problems associated with having a tree in your garden or grounds. On carrying out the maintenance work we find people are left feeling happy that the tree is still a feature of their garden but at the same time they have overcome a problem it has been creating. Shown to the right are pictures and terminology used for some of the regular tasks we perform. Have a look at the trees around you and see whether they could benefit from our services. What do you think? Hopefully you can see a way in which we can help you. Whether you are a homeowner, commercial organisation, Local Authority or agricultural business, we are able to assist you with your arboricultural needs. We are fully NPTC qualified in all aspects of Arboriculture and have 5million pounds of public indemnity cover.

Crown thinning is the removal of a percentage of the branch structure without changing the outline of the tree. Crown thins are usually conducted to allow more light to pass through tree but may also be conducted to reduce the sail area of vulnerable trees or to reduce water uptake. Heavier limbs may also be removed during this operation providing the form of the tree is not damaged or the tree is left in an unbalanced shape. It is also an opportunity to remove dead, dying, diseased, rubbing or crossing limbs.

CROWN LIFT Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches of the tree to give a uniform height above ground level. This practice reveals a clear stem which is often more pleasing to the eye. Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light under the tree and to give access to vehicles and pedestrians. Clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (8 feet).

CROWN REDUCTION Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or the spread of the crown of the tree. This is generally conducted for aesthetic reasons but may be carried out to remove dead wood, “stag horns”, at the top of a mature tree.

CYCLING

Warming

ICY HANDS

I

CYCLING TIPS AND ADVICE FROM SPORT EDITOR GARY DICKSON

t’s true that few sensations are as uncomfortable, or take the fun out of winter cycling faster, than cold hands. In cold weather, body temperatures drop and blood vessels in our extremities constrict in an effort to send blood and heat to our core. On a bike, inadequately protected fingertips may become painful or lose sensation, not only causing discomfort, but also affecting grip on the handlebars. As mentioned, our body has built in controls that put our hands in second place to our core when it comes to keeping warm. So if you want warm hands keep the rest of your body warm. However, don’t ignore how important it is to wear quality gloves that provide insulation, warmth and help to keep blood circulating! So what do you need to look for when getting the right gloves? First of all consider your riding conditions. Are you a commuter, a mountain biker, a roadie? Are you out in wet, cold, muddy conditions, etc? Now look at gloves designed specifically for your needs. Make sure they fit correctly.

When holding the handlebars if circulation is restricted to your fingertips you are going to feel the cold. Is there enough fabric covering your wrists? If not heat will escape. Gauntlet style gloves easily eradicate this problem. For extreme cold, choose gloves with an outer membrane that blocks wind and moisture from getting in. An internal stretchy, warm to the touch, seam-sealed fabric that is breathable with a waterproof membrane will keep your hands cosy. Like everything getting the right product that does the job well doesn’t come free but £29.99 - £39.99 is one of the best winter biking decisions you can make. Well worth it! Andrew Henrys (51), from Brampton is the owner of super healthy swedish pet food company ‘Husse North Cumbria’. We met up with him to find out a little more... Q: So Andrew, is this a new business venture or have you been in the pet food business for years? It’s an entirely new venture. Having left the forces in 2002, where I served in the Royal Navy for twenty years, I worked at Spadeadam for a year before working for the City Council, which I did until being made redundant due to austerity cuts in 2013. After a short spell of agency driving, I turned to the internet to find work. It was then that I discovered the ‘Husse’ brand, which is something entirely new for Cumbria, and successfully became a franchisee of this great business. Q: What’s the best and worst aspect of being in your specific business? I love meeting people and their pets! I have two dogs myself - a collie and a german shepherd. Pet owners in general are very friendly people. It’s great delivering pet food around the whole of North Cumbria. We give pet owners the chance to ‘try before they buy’ with free cat or dog food samples which many customers really appreciate. Keeping up with the paperwork is definitely the drawback to my business.

‘Bespoke’ furniture is simply furniture that has been made to measure according to what you want to use it for and how you want it to look. It’s not a polite word for expensive.

‘Euroak’

he popularity of all things wood marches on. Warm, structural, natural, tactile and practical. Furniture, doors, mouldings, floors, kitchens, beams, windows and panelling. You too can live in your very own bird box.

Most of the above can be had online or from retail warehouses. OR what about having something made just for you. It doesn’t have to be a commissioned piece of cabinetry costing thousands, it could be a kitchen unit, a wooden chest, a front door or a chopping block. Something, however humble, made exactly how you want it, not just something you make do with. You could buy something mass produced in China from bits of some bland nameless wood, or have a local craftsmen make a perfectly produced piece from some unique English Timber. It will fit exactly in some alcove or in your hall because it will be made to measure. More expensive? Possibly, but not always. It will though, be in your home for ever, you will stroke it as you pass, you can get your Nana to polish it properly, and it won’t take up room till

you get round to putting it in the garage for standing the paint tins on. In Cumbria we have fantastic native timbers like Wych Elm, Quartered Oak, Rippled Sycamore and Olive Ash as exotic as anything growing in the Amazon. Too many fallen and dead trees end up as firewood but with a bit of imagination this most basic material can be turned into something marvellous.
