Salt is one of the world’s oldest forms of payment. In fact, the word salary comes from the Latin ‘salarium’, which was the money paid to Roman soldiers to buy salt. I’m not 100% sure of my facts, but I think the value of salt is directly related to its role in preserving marriages. Most of us husbands, or wives for that matter, have been served a meal at some point by our partners and we were unsure of its original species or food type. Rather than ask too many questions that may give away our distrust of the plated item, we decide in typical British fashion to cover it in salt and crack on with it, for the sake of our Marriage bonds until death, or hypertension, do us part. As a result, our taste buds are accustomed to salt. In fact, all the traditional British foods need a lot of salt. Fish and chips, the Sunday Roast, Shepherd’s Pie, Full English Breakfast, Bangers and Mash, Toad in the Hole, Fried Mars Bars, I could go on.
And if salt fails to make something edible, we like to go to plan B and add Vinegar. How bad does food have to be that adding acid makes it better! This is the same stuff we clean the floor with.
Amazingly enough, none of these afore mentioned delicacies have made much of an impact on the European or North American market which is why the British pub is still so popular around the world. Which brings me to crisps. Once you leave the UK the wellrecognised standard colour coding for crisps seems to be treated with complete disregard and impunity. This has caused me on holiday to experience Wrong Crisp Flavour Rage. So, let’s be clear. Red should be Ready Salted, Blue is Salt and Vinegar, green is Cheese and Onion, Pink is Prawn Cocktail. We normally can’t speak the language when we go on holiday even if it is to the USA, so the only thing we can go on is the colour. If the colours are mixed up, then we have no clue what we are purchasing.
Like when our family went to France, and I bought some burgers for the BBQ. I thought Chevaline was the name of the company making the burgers. Anyway, I had to take them back despite the kids saying they wanted to do some equestrian activities. We should have just added some salt.
Congratulations to Alex for rescuing Bear, Matilda for finding all the hidden Winston’s and Sandy who won the ‘The Gift of Human Kindness” book by Judith Cook.

CARLISLE’S PAST
The ‘Yarrow’ provided a twice weekly service between Silloth and Dublin. Her crew posed for the camera in 1912. The stewardess is Sarah Mahony Cunningham. To her right is first Officer, William Kearney. Captain Carnie was in charge. The lad at the top of the ladder is Duncan Chisholm, Jnr who later became the ship’s engineer. One man who experienced the transition from sail to steam at first hand was Duncan Chisholm’s father, Captain Duncan Chisholm.
He made beautiful models of the sailing ships on which he had served in his youth and Sidney Martin produced a special postcard of them. Duncan senior, born at Carlisle in 1857,
went to sea at the age of fourteen, serving aboard the ‘Silloth’, the ‘Albatross’ and, finally, the ‘Kittiwake.’
He became Chief Officer of the ‘Kittiwake’ and, in October 1900, helped save the crew of the barque ‘Topdale’ which was in difficulties on the Solway, for which he was awarded an illuminated address and silver medal.
Around 1903, he became captain of the Silloth paddle tug ‘Petrel,’ responsible for assisting shipping in and out of the docks.
He also supervised the towing of barges out to sea after dredging operations and attended to the navigation buoys and crew changes on the Solway Light Ship.

We all love a bargain. Have you ever bought something and when you go to pay for it you find out there is another 20% off that you didn’t know about? I love it when that happens. Also, Buy One Get One Free, or BOGOF as we have affectionately come to know it as, is great as I feel that I am getting a real bargain.
The one I struggle with though is, Buy Two Get One Free. I’m sure for a lot of people that works fine especially if you have a large family, but in my situation there is only myself and my husband now at home, so I don’t want three. It flummoxes me every time, what should I do? Do I just buy the one I wanted, but then that goes against the grain of not getting a bargain.
Two would be fine, but three really is pushing it. I admit, most times I give in and buy the three and end up giving some away which isn’t all bad, but maybe the fact that it doesn’t have an affectionate name like BOGOF says it all. Just saying!
Talking of bargain meals, I came across this recipe recently among my hoards of recipes in folders and boxes that I have kept over the years. It is called ‘Economy Meat Loaf’. This would work well as a midweek meal or would be great for a picnic.
Pre-heat your oven to 180º (160º fan).
Place 1 chopped onion, 50g Quick Quaker Oats, 350g Minced Raw Beef, 1 dessertspoon of Worcester Sauce, ¼ pint Beef Stock and Salt and Pepper in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
Press the mixture into a greased and lined 450g loaf tin and bake for 1 hour.
Cool slightly and remove from tin. Serve hot or cold

FEET HYGIENE
WRITTEN BY ROBIN, NEET FEET
Did you know that nails never stop growing but grow faster in the summer than in the winter. On average, finger and toenails grow at a rate of 3 millimeters a month.
Fingernails take 3 to 6 months to regrow completely, while toenails require around 12 to 18 months to grow back fully. The finger length indicates how fast the nail grows — the nail of the middle finger grows faster than others, and fingernails grow fastest on the hand you write with.
Like hair, nails undergo changes over time, due to disease, internal processes in the body as it ages, nutritional deficiencies, or external factors like long-term exposure to chemicals or ultraviolet light.
FINGER aNd TOENaILS
GROW aT a RaTE OF 3 mILLImETERS a mONTH
Keeping your toenails properly trimmed regularly can prevent ingrown nails. When toenails are too long, they can start to curl and dig into the skin, causing pain and discomfort. This can lead to infections and other foot problems.
Fungal infections, which account for about half of all nail disorders and are more common in the elderly, can cause nail thickening and discoloration. It’s also important to note that toenail fungus can spread to other areas of your body if left untreated.
Toenails are particu-

larly vulnerable because shoes provide a warm, moist environment for fungus to grow. Factors that predispose someone to nail fungal infections include being male, diseases like diabetes and immune deficiency conditions and smoking. The fingernail length record-holder for women is Diana Armstrong, 64, hasn’t trimmed her talons since 1997, and they now collectively measure a mighty 42-feet, 10.4 inches. The current fingernail length record-holder for men, according to Guinness, is Shridhar Chillal from India, who set the record in 1998 with a total of 20 feet 2.25 inches (615.32 cm) of nails on his left hand. His longest nail, on his thumb, was 4 feet 9.6 inches (146.3 cm) long.
Getting your toenails cut can be a relaxing and therapeutic experience. It is also a simple yet essential part of personal hygiene and grooming. Not only does it prevent ingrown nails, but it can also improve the overall health of your nails and prevent the buildup of dirt and bacteria.
So, the next time you’re due for a trim, don’t put it off – your nails will thank you!

After a long, wet and windy winter, spring is finally here! With lighter days and warmer weather, our pets become more active. However, this can bring some health worries.

Now is a good time to make sure your garden is still ‘pet safe’, especially after winter weather we have experienced here in the UK. Check fence panels, gates, and walls to make sure there are no gaps — you’d be amazed how small a gap a determined dog can squeeze through!

Some species of plants and flowers are poisonous to cats and dogs. Some common examples of these, at this time of year, include daffodils, spring bulbs, tulips and aconite. If you have these species of flowers in your garden, placing a mesh fence around them will help to keep your dog or cat away. If your dog or cat tries to eat these plants, ensure they are not left alone in the garden.

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.”

PHYSIO AT HomE
WRITTEN BY NIKI TEBBUTT & JAMES ORD, PHYSIO2U CARLISLE
Almost one third (32%) of the population of the UK has a musculoskeletal (MSK) condition such as arthritis or back pain.
Physiotherapy at the right time, in the right place can speed up recovery and help return to normal function.
MSK conditions mostly affect people aged 65 and over with 61% living with an MSK condition & the UK’s population of people over the age of 85 is predicted to double in the next 20 years (NIHR, 2018).
These conditions negatively impact people’s physical health, mental health & quality of life, preventing them from engaging in meaningful day to day activities. Everyone gets older and aren’t able to do the things they were once able to, but that doesn’t mean nothing can be done about it!
Falls are the number one reason older people are taken to hospital. 30% of people aged 65 and over will fall at least once a year! For those aged 80 & over it is 50% and 5% of those falls result in a fracture (Public Health England, 2022).
Niki & James from Physio2Ucarlisle can provide quick hands on assessment & treatment with currently very low waiting times. Outcomes of new soft tissue injuries like sprains & strains are
good if treatment is prompt (Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine, 2008).
We can holistically assess you in your own home before you have a fall, reducing your risks of falling, help improve your balance & prepare you for the unfortunate event should you fall. This is ‘Preventative Rehabilitation’ (prehab) which not only helps with falls but can also prepare for orthopaedic surgery.
In familiar home environments people with memory problems feel more at ease and less disorientated than an out-patient clinic.
Physio2UCarlisle can help with a comprehensive range of injuries and pain, with over 40 years of experience in the profession with knowledge of NHS, private, community and sports injuries rehabilitation.

Many people enjoy a glass of white wine and, certainly, white wines (as do reds and other drinks) accompany numerous dishes too. White wines tend to be very popular to pair with fish, seafood and white meat dishes, whilst reds are great with red meats and steaks, etc.
Sweet wines are a favourite with a good number of desserts – even some being poured over ice cream – splendid! For this quest I looked at white wines, which are excellent on their own, but can be paired with a lot of cuisine.
ALVArinHo (12% vol) from Portugal is an extremely popular Vinho Verde DOC. With grapes sourced from vineyards situated close to the Atlantic Ocean and by keeping the wine on its lees for four months, following fermentation, this defines the stone fruit flavours, including apple and peach and enhances the richness of this wine.
VErdECA (12.5% vol) from Italy is a further very popular choice for many. Produced in partnership with San Marzano, in the Puglia region of southern Italy, this wine has additional ‘comforts’, by including a little Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia Bianca to the blend, to promote citrusy overtones. It is then aged in French oak barrels, for three months, to produce
its elegance.
SAuVignon BLAnC (12.5% vol) from New Zealand. Made in partnership with Yealands Estate, this wine hails from Marlborough, which is known for cool nights and warm days that forward the fruit flavours for this production.
There are many more white wines that are selected very often and –as they say, ‘each to their own’. I have my preferences and please, take the time and pleasure to locate your favourites.
i located these wines at a MorriSonS store.
I found them in their ‘the Best’ range. The several ranges of wines and drinks have increased over recent years and now offer vast, excellent choices be it red or white wines, something stronger or non-alcoholic beverages.

Before The Beatles made their first record for Parlophone Records, they’d already made several recordings for the German Polydor label, and the man who had first taken them into a recording studio was pianist, orchestra leader, arranger, composer and producer Bert Kaempfert.
Not as well known, perhaps, as Mantovani, Ray Conniff or even James Last, Bert Kaempfert’s Orchestra sold a staggering one hundred and fifty million records which proves Kaempfert’s philosophy of wanting to make “music for everyone….. meant to give people pleasure [and] if it doesn’t, it’s failed in its purpose” as he was quoted as saying was spot on.

This twenty-eight track CD is the perfect introduction to Kaempfert and his music, collecting together the best of his singles output from the late 50s and early 60s.
Wonderland By Night was the tune that brought him international fame in 1960, but in his home country his versions of Perez Prado’s Patricia and April In Portugal (popularized in the early 50s by Les Baxter) were big sellers.

that have stood the test of time while Wooden Heart (the Elvis Presley hit based on an old German folk song) sees Kaempfert in foottapping trad jazz mode, but it’s the tracks from the 1962 LP A Swingin’ Safari that sets the orchestra apart from many others. Afrikaan Beat, Happy Trumpeter, That Happy Feeling and A Swingin’ Safari itself are happy, rhythmic tunes that will brighten the most miserable of days.
If you’re already a fan, this is a CD to keep in the glove compartment of the car to pop into the CD player on a long journey; if you’re curious to know what Bert Kaempfert’s music is all about, this is the CD to start you on your journey.

THE CLIMATE CHANGE EffECT
HAppY GARdENING! WITH GARdEN EdIToR dAvId fLETCHER mCIHoRT
The other week I gave a presentation to a local gardening club on the effects of climate change on our gardens. I pointed to the fact that the season in just a decade had increased by 29 days. The way we garden now is in fact very different to the way we cultivated plants when I first started out as an apprentice in 1979.
One shift in emphasis has got to be the rapid rise in UK wine production. Although I suppose vines have been grown in Britain for many hundreds of years, their early history was predominantly tied to the consumption of wine in monasteries, rather than commercial sales. In more recent times in say the 1950s and 60s relatively modest scale vineyards began to emerge, and over a few decades their fortunes rose and fell. Cool climate viticulture as it was termed focused until recently on varieties of vine that were predominantly German –varieties instantly recognisable such as Muller – Thurgau. If you are old enough to remember names like Blue Nun and Black Tower, you will know what I am talking about!
In the late 1980s however something remarkable happened in terms of British
viticulture: the idea that it might be possible due to a changing climate i.e. a warming climate, to grow vines associated with French Champagne, and the likes of Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Meunier began to be planted with the idea that we in the UK could produce sparkling, bottle fermented fizz. Some thought the early pioneers to be mad, but the awards, both at home and internationally began to roll in. As I write two famous Champagne houses are investing in the South of England. This change and the fact that an area the size of Champagne has been identified as suitable for
THE SEaSON IN JUST a dEcadE HaS INcREaSEd BY 29 daYS
vineyards in the UK, all points to climate change. In the 1950s and 60s it just would not have been possible to grow the aforementioned grapes and produce quality sparkling wine. These climatic opportunities now mean that around 72% of UK wine production is firmly focused on sparkling wine.
In 2019 the UK wine industry made sales of around 4.5 million bottles of wine, and the total number of registered vineyards is in 2023 approaching a thousand.
The viability of these vineyards is closely tied to a more reliable climate – rising temperatures do not necessarily translate into success, but the seasonal stability associated with counties such as Essex and Suffolk suggest that these areas could yield even better results than seen.
Climate change may provide opportunities as in the case of UK viticulture, but there are of course challenges. Pests and diseases hitherto absent are beginning to appear, and periods of drought now increasingly seen across the UK can be preceded by periods of heavier than normal precipitation.
In my talk I outlined these challenges and the fact that we gardeners will be required to adapt the way we grow and what we grow. I think the history of gardening has adaptation at its heart, and that more than ever gardens hold the key to maintaining a healthy and biodiverse environment.
As always happy gardening.

The Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 has changed life as we know it and thrust the NHS into the spotlight. A nation in lockdown has adorned windows with rainbows and stepped onto doorsteps every Thursday to celebrate the people who are risking their lives by turning up to work. But as the grim reports of deaths from the disease cumulate, along with stories of insuYcient protective equipment for staff, there is hope that the crisis will raise awareness and bring change to the way the NHS and its people are treated.
At midnight on 5 July 1948, the National Health Service was born with the founding principal to be free at the point of use and based on clinical need rather than on a person’s ability to pay. Over seventy years since its formation, these core principals still hold true, but the world has changed. Persistent underfunding has not kept pace with increased demand for healthcare, leading to longer waiting times, staYng shortages and low moral.

WRITTEN BY LoCAL ARBoRIST ANDREW EDGAR [oRCHARd TREE SURGERY & mAINTENANCE]
Love them or hate them, here in Cumbria trees are everywhere Living with them can be hard at times. They can block out the rise of the morning sun, give us the unending task of clearing up after them all autumn and we lie awake on long stormy nights waiting for yet another branch to crash through your greenhouse. But let’s remember what we love about them. The amazing varying shades of colour, the way in which they purify our air, the homes they provide for our wildlife and not forgetting the natural shields they form for our houses to keep out unwanted interest.
As an Arborist (a tree surgeon to you and I) I’m regularly asked to remove a particular tree which is causing a problem. Many don’t necessarily want to ‘remove the tree’ but don’t feel they have much of a choice for instance, it may be blocking sun light, growing too close to bedroom windows or simply causing a headache (or more likely back ache) from pick-
ing up the mess it leaves (see what I did there). I try to explain there are ways in which we can manage our trees and perform maintenance on them to reduce all of the problems associated with having a tree in your garden or grounds. On carrying out the maintenance work we find people are left feeling happy that the tree is still a feature of their garden but at the same time they have overcome a problem it has been creating.
Pictures and terminology shown on this page are some of the regular tasks we perform. Have a look at the trees around you and see whether they could benefit from our services. Hopefully you can see a way in which we can help you.
Whether you are a homeowner, commercial organisation, Local Authority or agricultural business, we are able to assist you with your arboricultural needs. We are fully NPTC qualified in all aspects of Arboriculture and have 5million pounds of public indemnity cover.
Crown Thin
Crown thinning is the removal of a percentage of the branch structure without changing the outline of the tree. Crown thins are usually conducted to allow more light to pass through tree but may also be conducted to reduce the sail area of vulnerable trees or to reduce water uptake.
Heavier limbs may also be removed during this operation providing the form of the tree is not damaged or the tree is left in an unbalanced shape. It is also an opportunity to remove dead, dying, diseased, rubbing or crossing limbs.
Crown LifT
Crown reduCTion
Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or the spread of the crown of the tree. This is generally conducted for aesthetic reasons but may be carried out to remove dead wood, “stag horns”, at the top of a mature tree.
Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches of the tree to give a uniform height above ground level. This practice reveals a clear stem which is often more pleasing to the eye. Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light under the tree and to give access to vehicles and pedestrians. Clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (8 feet).

TAx & GIFTING PROPERTY
THE TAX ImpLICATIoNS of GIfTING pRopERTY To CHILdREN
of the gains from CGT, and if the recipient lives in the property as their main residence, they may also qualify for PPR when they come to sell the property.
Where there is tax to pay, the gift of the property must be reported to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) within 60 days, with tax also payable by the same deadline.
inheritance tax (iHT)
to children aged under 18 years old, any net income exceeding £100 per annum is taxed on the parents as if they still owned the asset. This rule does not apply to income generated from gifts from grandparents.
Stamp duty Land Tax (SdLT)
There are many reasons why assets are gifted but don’t overlook the tax implications.
Capital gains Tax (CgT)
CGT is due on the difference between the market value at the date of gift and the original cost (or 1982 value if owned before then) less any capital improvements and costs of acquisition and disposal.
The first £6,000 of gain is tax-free in 2023/24 (or £3,000 if after 05.04.24) and the balance taxed at 18% or 28%, depending on the donor’s income.
If a property is bought and is gifted immediately there should be no gain to tax provided there is no increase in value between the dates of purchase and gift.
If donor’s main home is gifted, Principal Private Residence relief (PPR) may exempt some or all
It can be good planning to gift unneeded assets during an individual’s lifetime to reduce the value of the estate liable to inheritance tax but beware of the traps. Gifts, including property, to individuals during a person’s lifetime are only exempt from IHT if the donor survives seven years from the date of the gift. Where the donor survives between three and seven years, a tapered IHT rate may apply. However, if the donor retains an interest in the property, it is treated as a ‘gift with reservation of benefit’ and the property remains in their estate and is taxed in full on death. To avoid this rule the full market rate rent would need to be paid.
income tax
Gifting rental property that produces an income to children can be a good way to utilise their income tax annual allowance and their lower tax rate bands. However, where parents gift assets
SDLT is charged on the consideration paid for the transfer, or where the land or property is subject to debt, the value of the debt transferred with the gift. other considerations
Don’t forget the longer-term effects of divorce or bankruptcy within the family, which could result in the loss of the property. If the donor gifts assets or income, including property, so that these won’t be included in any financial assessment for care home fees, local authorities can still include the value of these assets regardless of the fact they are no longer owned.
Consideration could also be given to:
• Gifting the income from an asset.
• Gifting a proportion of the asset.
• Gifting into Trust
If you have any questions regarding the above or have any tax problems or queries, please contact us for a FREE initial consultation.

GREAT CORBY
WRITTEN BY HELEN (CHAIR of GREAT CoRBY vILLAGE ASSoCIATIoN)
grEAT CorBy iS rAiSing THE roof
We are very excited to announce that we have been awarded funding by The National Lottery Community Fund, Hadfield Trust, Wetheral Parish Council and Carlisle City Council to replace Great Corby Village Hall Roof.
Great Corby Reading Room was established in 1850 and a new room was built by public subscription in 1877. Twenty years later a caretaker’s cottage was added, by The Howard Family of Corby Castle, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The Room had a good supply of newspapers and periodicals and around 300 books for the education of boys and young men in the village. At some point the two buildings were linked and became known as Great Corby Village Hall.
In 1994 Corby Castle was sold by The Howard Family to Edward Haughey, an Irish businessman. In 2004 he became a life peer, Lord Ballyedmund, and in that same year he leased the Village Hall and Playing fields to the newly formed Great Corby Village Association for a peppercorn rent. In 2020 we signed a new lease for the next 50 years.
The Hall has become a hub of the village. There are very popular monthly Coffee Mornings on the second Tuesday of the month. We have a lively Toddler Group on Thursday
Mornings and Beavers
Cubs and Scouts (girls and boys) meet every Thursday evening in term time. We have two rooms dedicated to yoga and wellbeing and the hall is used for private Art classes.
The Hall is available for hire for events. We have hosted Quiz Nights, Cinema Nights, birthday parties, talks, a Race Night, an Art Exhibition, and two wonderful Craft Fairs
Sadly this Victorian Lady is showing signs of age and in the last few years we have been fighting a relentless battle against leaks, damp and decay. The new roof will be fully insulated. This will not only improve the fabric of the building but also improve the energy efficiency in this period of spiralling fuel costs and pressures of climate change.
A massive thank you to all who have awarded funds to this project.

THE LAKES mAN
heaped a few stones high, with concrete gateposts standing proud, but holding no gates of course. The earth was cracked like a desert, and rather spongy in places. The top of the valley, looking back, looked as magnificent as ever, the dome of Harter fell descending to Nan Bield pass, then climbing to Mardale Ill Bell and High Street beyond. At the front the ridge of Rough Crag drops to the lake shore.
Many people unfamiliar with the Lake District know the story I am about to relate, the drowning of two small hamlets, Mesand and Mardale Green, in the valley now occupied by the Haweswater reservoir.
The existing lake was a natural looking mere until almost a century ago, then, a concrete dam 1550 feet wide and 120 feet high was built at one end, raising the water level by 95 feet to create the lake that we know today.
It is four miles long, 200 feet deep and contains 84 billion gallons of water. It often has an ugly tide mark around it, and in times of drought the remains of former dwellings reappear.
Under the tree covered promontory known as the Rigg, at the far end, an old packhorse bridge built in the 17th Century can then be walked across and the site of the Holy Trinity church located. Mardale Green was just beyond, near the entrance to the Riggindale valley. The Dun Bull hotel was just around the corner to the left, towards the head of the lake.
When the
valley was flooded the buildings were dismantled, the stones of the church making up the water take-off tower beside the “new” road to the valley head, on the eastern shore. The bodies in the churchyard were exhumed and reburied in another location.
Alfred Wainwright wrote a
THE BOdIES IN THE cHURcHYaRd WERE EXHUmEd & REBURIEd IN aNOTHER LOcaTION
moving account of a final trip there in the late 1930s when the dam had been built and the flood was slowly filling up the valley.
It features in “Wainwright’s Lakeland”, a wonderful, illustrated book with photographs by Derry Brabbs. Have a box of tissues at the ready when you read his words.
The summer before last I went there to walk the valley floor, for the first time ever, for some reason. Well, no, actually, leg cramps made it happen! Fellwalking was temporarily off limits! It was an afternoon in early September and 27 degrees. I parked near the head of the lake and walked down the ancient road between walls
Just to pad the story out a bit, let me tell you a tale of a long walk in the mid-eighties, when me and a mate of mine walked across the mountains from Mardale to Pooley Bridge.
We parked his car at Ullswater, drove mine to Mardale, and set off across six mountains:- Kidsty Pike, High Raise, Wether Hill, Loadpot Hill, Bonscale Pike, and Arthur’s Pike.
Halfway along Mike confessed he’d left his car keys in my car. We debated turning back but he said he would break into his car (!) and drive back to our starting point. When we eventually arrived at Pooley Bridge he decided he couldn’t smash the window of his brand new Volkswagen Scirocco, so we set off hitchhiking back to Mardale Head.
I was utterly fed up and told him so. “No one will be going there at this time of night”! Amazingly, the second person passing by recognised Mike and took us back to my car. I know that sounds unlikely, but it actually happened. He always possessed a positive mental attitude and I had to agree on this occasion he was right!
