he other day I was looking at a map of the world and noticed that Britain seemed disproportionately large. My know-it-all friend remarked that this was because whoever was drawing the map always made their country look bigger and more important. This nugget of information blew my mind. You might assume that all maps were accurate, or at least accurate-ish. But no, designers play fast and loose with the truth, making the host country bigger, more important or more central. Another mind blowing fact was this - every ‘c’ in Pacific Ocean is pronounced differently. Take your time to say it slowly—the first with an ‘s’ sound, the second as a hard ‘ck’ sound, and the third with a ‘sh’ sound – how mad is that! How about this…If you folded a piece of paper 42 times, it would be thick enough to reach the moon. Yep, you read that correctly. According to one website, all it takes to verify this is some simple maths. If you fold a piece of paper in half, it doubles in thickness. And if you fold it in half again, it doubles in thickness again. With that type of exponential growth, it would take just 23 folds for a .1-millimeter piece of paper to be one kilometer thick, and 30 folds for it to be thick enough to reach outer space (100,000 kilometers). Unfortunately, the world record for the number of folds is 12. I’m here all week for more mind-blowing facts! Many congratulations to our competition winners, Emily & Thomas who found all the Winstons, Karen who won the ‘My doors of Destiny’ book, and to Tom & Chester who found and rescued Bear!

Rebecca Tyson has been developing ideas to support children’s mental health and wellbeing throughout her fifteen year career working as a qualified nursey nurse and within pre-school settings. Born in Carlisle, Cumbria, where Rebecca lives with her husband and three children, Rebecca has spent the past three years pursuing her creative ambition to write her first children’s picture book, based around the characters she has created – the Flamingo Friends. “Flamingo Flockdown” by Rebecca Tyson is her first publication and introduces you to a special group of friends who share their feelings, work through their worries and see the very best in each other. Directly addressing the challenges little ones have had to face due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the children’s book provides adults and children alike with the opportunity to reflect on some of the very difficult situations we have worked through over the past 24 months and encourages talk and reflection to help come out the other side of the pandemic and heal children’s worries. BUSINESS TAX SAVING TIPS

Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) & Super-deduction laim up to £1million of AIA for qualifying capital expenditure up to 31 March 2023 and write off 100% of the costs immediately. Make sure you use this relief before the limit decreases from 1 April 2023. Additionally the new super-deduction for companies gives a 130% deduction on qualifying plant and machinery or 50% on anything that qualifies for special rates. Expenditure must be on brand new assets and is only available until 31 March 2023. Electric cars and enhanced capital allowances generally Enhanced capital allowances are available on all energy efficient technologies and allow your business to claim 100% first year allowances (FYA), giving full tax relief in period of acquisition. Enhanced allowances are available in addition to the annual allowance. Electric cars fall into this category and it may be worth running your car through the business, with low benefit in kind rates starting at 2%.

C

Structures and Buildings Allowance Claim 3% straight line writing down allowance on new commercial building expenditure that does not qualify for relief elsewhere. Pension Contributions Companies can make pension contributions for directors and save up to 25% corporation tax from April 2023 as they are a deductible business expense. This is provided the overall level of remuneration the director receives which includes salary, dividends, bonuses, benefits in kind, pension contributions etc. is commensurate for the work being done. Claim for costs of working from home Where you work from home HMRC allow you to claim a proportion of your home expenses or a fixed rate deduction. Make sure you make this claim in your tax return to reduce the tax you pay. Employment Allowance Reduce your Employers NIC bill by up to £5,000 a year. To qualify you must be a business or charity with an employee class 1 NIC liability of less than £100,000 in the previous tax year. A single director company does not qualify for this relief. Ensure you claim all business-related expenditure Although obvious it’s worth mentioning. Have you paid for items on your credit card or from

your personal bank account for the business? Make sure you claim the money back from the company and get tax relief on all qualifying expenditure. Charitable donations If you make gift aid donations as an individual claim higher rate tax relief on your personal tax return. If you own a company, consider making the donations through it. Qualifying donations will be deductible from profits before calculating corporation tax. Research and Development Relief (R&D) If your company is breaking ground doing something innovative and new, ensure a claim is made to deduct an extra 130% from your profits of the qualifying costs. That’s on top of the deduction already made for the expenses! If you make a loss, you can also claim up to 14.5% tax credit if you surrender the loss on the R&D to HMRC. Creative Industry Relief The 8 creative industry reliefs are: films, animation, high-end television, video games, children’s television, theatre, orchestra and museums and galleries. Up to 100% of enhanceable expenditure can be claimed. Again, if your company makes a loss, you may be able to surrender the loss and convert some or all of it into a payable tax credit.

THE SPRING GARDEN

J

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

ust when is spring? By the time you read this in May it will surely be spring everywhere in the UK. Having gardened both in the south of England and as far north as Northumberland, spring starts and ends at different times depending on where you are. If we are lucky in Cumbria, then spring lasts a few precious weeks from the start of April. It is a time of burgeoning growth and colour, and often mixed weather! Essentially it is time for us to celebrate and marvel over, but one that dictates that as gardeners we need to get busy. In what seems a blink of an eye the garden is awake, and the dormancy of winter is over, and the weeds are upon us Maintenance is the key to a satisfying garden. Little and often is an adage that I generally abide by, and this is particularly relevant in terms of weeding. In borders, the ground that a few weeks ago had little herbage showing, suddenly sprouts unwanted seedlings. The tried and tested method to remove them before they get too big is to use a hoe. Even pernicious weeds such as ground elder are checked by regular use of this implement, and if you can augment this with the use of some form of mulch, then you can conserve moisture as the weather gets warmer, as well as limit their growth.

Stagshaw Gardens

There is however a lot to be said for getting out and about and being inspired by the gardens of others. Cumbria in spring is magnificent, and one of my favourites is Fell Foot Park, beautifully situated on the southern shore of Lake Windermere. The site is some 45 acres featuring a mixture of wildflower meadows, and gardens that look their best in spring. On a similar theme of spring flowers but in the context of a woodland setting is Stagshaw Gardens, Ambleside, where you can see a good selection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias. Having had a break from your own garden and no doubt eager to start on your own there are a plethora of jobs to do. Following spring bulbs there is always tidying up to do, and now is the time to sow and plant out bedding plants. Depending on the weather, and always being conscious of the possibility of late frosts (remember last May)! You can by the end of the

month start planting out summer bedding. It is a time to take softwood cuttings and begin in earnest to mow your lawn – weekly, or you could consider leaving the grass to grow a little longer in less formal areas. If you are lucky enough to have a greenhouse, then you will need to keep a closer eye on temperatures during the day and ventilate accordingly. On warmer days you may have to keep the floor damp with a hosepipe to increase humidity and keep temperatures down. It is also a good idea to begin to harden off any half – hardy bedding plants that you have raised under cover by placing them outside of the greenhouse during the warmer part of the day and then bringing them in at night. This will ensure that they are properly ‘hardened off’ before planting out. On the pruning front there is much to be done. Spring flowering shrubs such as Chaenomeles, as well as Choisya and Ribes can be pruned as soon as flowering finishes. You can also prune any frost damage from other shrubs. But remember when cutting any hedges to check beforehand for any signs of nesting birds. May is a busy but beautiful month. Take time out to visit gardens and enjoy your own. As always happy gardening!

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M

TREES FOR SMALL GARDENS written by LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE]

T

rees bring many benefits to our lives. They are proven to be stress relievers. They provide homes for many species of wildlife or birds. Trees also give shade from the sun or much needed privacy from a neighbour, so they are a brilliant thing to add to all gardens. However, if you have a small garden space you might think that a tree won’t work, or you might find it tricky to know which is the best fit. There are many small varieties of tree that can grow in small spaces - Here we’ve collated 5 trees we recommend: 1) Acer griseum, also known as Paper Bark, due to its goldencoloured pealing thin layers of bark, which gives it’s an unusual decorative look. Very slow growing and when fully grown it will be around 10m tall. Its dark green leaves turn a beautiful shade of crimson in the autumn giving your garden a burst of colour as the colder months set in. 2) Prunus mume ‘Benichidori’ or Flowering Japanese Apricot tree – This is a great addition for any garden. Its deep pink blossoms come out towards the end of February through to March, giving your garden that

4) Crab Apple Trees. These are a great option to plant in a small garden as there are multiple different varieties to choose from that will grow to no more than 5 meters. One of the more popular ones is the Malus ‘John Downie’ variety with its plum shaped orange/red coloured fruit and white flowers. Or the Malus ‘Butterball’ which produces beautiful yellow with a hint of orange fruits in the autumn and white flowers, with a hint of pink in the spring. This variety can grow up to 8m.

pop of pink just when it feels winter is never going to end! This gorgeous Japanese Apricot grows to around 2.5m by 2.5m so it will fit even in the smallest of gardens. 3) Magnolia stellate or Royal Star Magnolias. These head turners, with their dark green leaves, grey bark and beautiful ornate white flower displays, earn their royal name. This very hardy, fastgrowing tree likes well drained soil but watch out for those late frosts – its blooms are more susceptible to those, so be ready to protect it. This beauty will grow up to 6m tall and 5m wide. Best planted early springtime.

5) Chamaerops humilis. Also known as the European Fan Palm or Mediterranean Dwarf Palm, will bring a tropical feel to your garden, the only palm native to Europe. You can start off with planting it in a large pot and move around your garden to get a feel for where it’ll be best placed. This very slow growing evergreen tree, with its fan shaped leaves really gives your garden a focal statement piece, growing up to a height of only 3.5m. As with any decision on what will work best for your garden and family, always do your own research, or speak to an assistant at the Garden centre when making the final choice on which tree is right. However, we hope you found this a helpful starting point for some options of trees to plant.
