There is no such thing as a British accent. It’s estimated that there are 40 different dialects in the UK, each sounding totally different from each other, and in many cases use different spellings and word structure. There is pretty much one accent per county. Except Cumbria.

As our county is so large, with several relatively isolated districts, there is a large variation in accent, especially between North and South or the coastal towns. People from Whitehaven do not sound the same as people from Appleby and people from Carlisle do not sound the same as people from Barrow.

Living in a divided household (my wife has migrated from the south), I have my work cut out making sure the kids don’t emphasize their vowels (“bahhhh-th”, “mum”, “poorly” are always chastised — it’s pronounced “poo-a-lee). Imagine my delight to read of a competition being held recently, to find the region’s favourite Cumbrian words. The competition this year was the largest ever, with 64 Cumbrian dialect words originally drawn into 16 groups of four.

The article concluded “Eh’ beat ‘ladgeful’ by quite a wide margin to reach the final, whilst former winner ‘awez’ scraped through by beating ‘cowie’ by 53 per cent to 47 per cent of the vote. If you don’t know what any of this means, well shan for yer, lyk eh! Now gan an mek yersel a cuppa and then deeks at the rest of the mag.

Congratulations to Oscar who rescued Bear from Armathwaite, Caris who spotted all the Winston’s and Abby who won the ‘How the NHS coped with COVID-19’ book.

Lowther Street was the last street to be built in Carlisle when the East City Wall was demolished in 1808 and was initially a cul de sac with little traffic and was put to other uses.

An early use was as the Horse Market and the Carlisle Patriot, 22 March 1817, stated, “The workmen are busily employed in levelling the new Horse Market which will soon be open to the public.”

Street. A Butchers Market was built as an arcade in 1844 on a confined site between the Aethenaeum and the Congregational Church. There were concerns over the inconvenience of the Horse Market and in 1862 it was moved to Swifts Row.

LIVESTOCK DRIVEN ALONG LOWTHER STREET IN THE 1920’S

It was possible to run horses up and down the street to show their capabilities.

The Poultry Market was moved there from Devonshire street. The Carlisle Journal advertised in October 1843 that the Pork Market would re-commence on Saturdays in Lowther

The other markets survived the opening out of the street and were only removed to the Covered Market in 1900. With a cattle market on Botchergate and another on the Sands, it was a common sight to see livestock being driven along Lowther Street in the 1920s.

Much more about the history of Lowther Street can be found in a new book on the History of Lowther Street, by Denis Perriam, to be published in October 2022 by myself. It should be available in Bookends, Tullie House and on my website: p3publications.com.

What is the difference between a yam and a sweet potato? I always thought they were the same, in that we call them sweet potatoes here in the UK, whereas in America and Canada they would call them yams.

To a point that is true, when talking about the potato that has a smooth orange or reddish skin, an orange flesh, and a sweet flavour.

Yams have a rough, dark brown skin that is often compared to tree bark, with a dry and starchy flesh like a regular potato.

So why the confusion?

comes in a variety of colours as in orange flesh, white flesh and purple flesh.

Here is a soup recipe I have made many times where you can substitute ordinary potatoes for sweet potatoes. It’s a hearty soup so would do as a main course as well.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A YAM AND

A SWEET POTATO?

One reference work I read stated that in the early 20th century, sweet potato growers in southern America adopted the African word for yam to market their orange-coloured potatoes and distinguish them from regular potatoes.

The nickname “yam” stuck, and many producers use the name on their products to this day. The sweet potato or “yam” we know has become more popular over time and is very versatile. It can be roasted, steamed, mashed and even made into fries which are a firm favourite. It also

‘Harvest Vegetable Soup’. Melt 25g butter in a pan and fry 450g peeled and diced carrots, 1 medium onion skinned and sliced, 2 medium potatoes peeled and diced (or substitute with sweet potatoes) and 1 small green pepper seeded and chopped, until softened.

Add 50g lentils and 450ml water, salt and pepper to taste and a bay leaf. Simmer for 30 minutes. Mix 40g flour with a little milk and gradually blend in the rest of the milk (450ml milk total).

Stir well until soup thickens and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in 75g grated cheddar cheese. Sprinkle with croutons and serve with some lovely warm crusty bread.

“Maybe if you go to bed you’ll feel better in the morning” is literally just the human version of “Have you tried turning it off and back on again?”

Top of the toxic list has to be chocolate! Toxicity varies with the cocoa content, but high-quality dark chocolate is more likely to be lying around at Christmas.

Try and find the packaging if you can and assess how much might have been eaten to help your vet make the right treatment decision.

Grapes and dried fruit are also common problems, especially with mince pies, Christmas Cake, Stollen, and bowls of nibbles being out on tables for guests.

Dregs of alcoholic drinks are appealing to dogs and could cause symptoms from nausea to severe alcohol poisoning. As well as these very toxic foods, there is also a risk of more general overindulgence at this time of year.

Contact Stuart Edgar

A small amount of lean turkey and boiled vegetables makes a nice Christmas dinner for your dog, but too much of the skin or roast potatoes could cause pancreatitis, and stuffing or gravy containing onions or garlic should be avoided as these can be toxic too. Be very careful if the turkey carcass is left out on the worktop … cooked poultry bones can cause intestinal damage.

Talking of intestinal damage, vets also see extra cases of ‘foreign bodies’ at Christmas time,

with presents, toys, and ornaments lying around, and perhaps guests staying who aren’t careful with their socks and gloves!

If you are concerned that your dog has swallowed something inedible call your vet for advice.

Most of these risks can be managed by planning ahead: keep decorations out of dogs’ reach, don’t put gifts that might contain food under the tree, and give guests clear instructions about where to store their things.

If you are planning a party, your dog might be happier in a safe pen, crate, or room where he won’t be disturbed and can enjoy chomping on a dog-safe chew toy with the added benefit that your guests won’t have to worry about putting their plate of nibbles down somewhere safe!

If you suspect your dog has ingested antifreeze you must contact your vet immediately as treatment is only effective in the first few hours. Dogs may also become ill from licking rock salt from their paws after a pavement walk, so a rinse in clean water is recommended.

Christmas Tree Collection

Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland will once again be collecting real Christmas Trees in January 2023 to raise vital funds to help local patients and their families. The Christmas Tree Collection Day has historically been a huge success, with thousands of trees donated over the years and generous funds gifted too.

Volunteers and business supporters will set off early on the 12th January 2023 to collect trees from Carlisle, Penrith, Longtown, Brampton, and Wigton– locations which the Clinical Services Team of Hospice at Home visit to provide vital care and support to patients at the end stages of life. Members of the public are requested to book their tree in for collection, and all donations given towards this are gratefully received.

Cath Coates, Fundraiser for Hospice at Home, said, “The year on year success of our annual tree collection is always a remarkable testament to the support the community offers to the charity. Not only do more and more people book in their tree every year, but we have an amazing team of volunteers and business supporters who enable the event to take place, including our event sponsor Lloyd Motor Group. If anyone has a van and would like to help with the collection this year, please do contact us on 01768 210719, we are always looking for more helpers.”

Robin Hood THE LIFE & LEGEND OF AN OUTLAW

aUTHOr: STePHen BaSdeO

Publisher: Pen & Sword Books

www.pen-and-sword.co.uk

Robert Southey, who was born in Bristol and buried in the churchyard of Crosthwaite Parish Church in Cumbria, was the first to write a Robin Hood novel in 1791, but it was never published. Robin Hood: The Life and Legend of an Outlaw is the first time it’s ever been discussed at length.

Find out who historians think was the real Robin Hood, including Southey, and see the various twists and turns that the legend has taken over time. Profusely illustrated with images from medieval manuscripts, early modern books, and Victorian penny dreadfuls.

QUESTION:

Robert Southey is buried in which Cumbrian churchyard?

iT’S a gin THing!

Juniper berries form the base flavour for gins and productions of these alcoholic beverages dates back centuries.

Today, many different botanicals can be and are used, to great advantage, to produce gins that are a clear liquid through to a great number of coloured variations, which are appreciated and loved by numerous gin connoisseurs. I searched for a company producing a good range of handcrafted gins, that utilises botanicals to create outstanding gins, which appeal to many.

LONDON

The Ruddy Fine Distillery is very proud of their productions, which have been developed over recent years, by Cheryl Stretton and Rory Thorpe.

Their LONDON DRY GIN (42% ABV) is infused with 11 botanicals, all carefully selected to provide an excellent, balanced product.

SUMMER BERRIES GIN (42% ABV) has, as the name suggests, juicy berries, evoking thoughts of summer in England. Red fruits are in abundance, for the bouquet. Again, excellent on the mouthfeel and palate’s sensation. Cardamom combines with the other botanicals, to provide this

‘pink favourite’, that pink gin lovers fully enjoy.

Other Ruddy Fine gin productions include NAVY STRENGTH GIN, CHRISTMAS GIN (Limited Edition) and LOCKDOWN

GIN (Limited Edition).

Gift vouchers are available too, plus other merchandise to complement the range. The Ruddy Fine Gin Club is very popular, with memberships steadily increasing.

For a ‘something different’ type of gift the Ruddy Fine Minis Gift Boxes are very attractively presented and could be the answer.

As Cheryl and Rory say, “Our passion and desire to create the finest small batch craft gins comes through in every refreshing sip”

Before marriage, I would sit at red stop lights for hours because I had no one to tell me the light had changed to green.

reCOrdMan

Afriend said to me a few years back, when we were discussing the reissue CD market, “They’re re-issuing things now that were never issued in the first place”. I know it makes no sense, but I knew what he meant; recordings that had been left unheard and unreleased by the major record companies were now being made available by record companies whose mission was to have these ‘lost records’ available for the fan music collector.

This release is such a one. Twentyfive years ago Sequel Records (it no longer exists) issued a CD of nearly all the recordings The Montanas, a four, later fivepiece group from Wolverhampton, made for Pye Records where they were produced by Tony Hatch. In their heyday, they supported The Walker Brothers on a nationwide tour and one of their records, You’ve Got To Be Loved made number 58 on the all-important Billboard magazine chart in America (it made the Top 40 on two other national charts there).

ONE OF BRITAINS FINEST POP/ HARMONY GROUPS

situation, so apart from ‘should’ve been hits’ the group made for Pye (the above mentioned U.S. hit, Ciao Baby, Run To Me, Take My Hand to just name a few), the CD also includes the MCA label release, Let’s Get A Little Sentimental from 1970, another record that should have made our charts plus the three singles The Montanas made for MAM (the excellent Uncle John’s Band, No Smoke Without Fire and Suzanne) and Love Machine that was issued on Charisma.

Over 40 tracks including I’m Gonna Change (only ever issued in America) Henry Ford and Miss Mackenzie (only ever issued in Germany), plus demos the group made of songs that never were released.

In Britain the group appeared on TV, regularly on Radio 1 and on average worked twenty-eight days a month up and down the country — one thing was missing — a hit record.

After Pye Records, they moved on to the MCA, MAM and Charisma labels, but those recordings never made it on to a CD (at least not legally).

Now, BGO Records has finally rectified that

The Montanas were one of Britain’s finest pop/harmony groups and had a recording career that lasted from 1965 until 1975; now, finally, the whole story can be told.

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.”

learn FrOM Garden desiGners

along with plants such as Geranium phaeum and Helleborous niger form part of Sarah Ravens choices.

What a gardening year 2022 was!

Possibly the hottest, at times the driest, and now a distant memory. The first frosts are a declaration that winter has come, and as is customary in this column a time to reflect on what went well and what didn’t.

Instead, I thought it might be interesting to look at the ideas of others –particularly those of Garden Designers who seem to have been busy both at Chelsea this year and at the Society of Garden Designers Awards.

There are definite trends, but overwhelmingly the focus has been a response to the Climate Crisis in one way or another.

Having emerged from the Pandemic, we as a society seem to have found gardening. And for some it has been to grow our own food. The use of raised beds has become a must, and with it the use of natural materials such as wood. The flexibility that raised beds give us, and the control that specially prepared compost provides has been a feature of many designs.

The use of geometric forms used in paving and garden furniture enable us to incorporate our aspirations in terms of

growing food in containers.

Other trends are clear: In terms of plants and planting there is a definite move towards the naturalistic; the use of plants that will tolerate wet winters and dry summers, that will attract pollinators and provide habitat for wildlife.

Noticeably garden design has become touchy feely! The use of aromatic and tactile plants to aid welfare is the centrepiece of Joe Swift’s Garden at Stoke Mandeville which won the ‘Healing, learning or Community Landscapes and Gardens Award’.

I particularly like Joe’s selection of plants designed to reflect the seasons – Spring bulbs, perennials and grasses for summer, good autumn colour and winter interest in the form of bark colour.

Aside from colour schemes, emphasis is on providing food for pollinators in the early part of the year when food is scarce. Nectar rich spring bulbs such as crocus

The sustainability theme runs throughout many garden designs this year with a special focus on natural materials used in garden furniture and containers. Oak seems to feature so long as it is sourced from sustainably managed woodlands.

However, as far as designers like Chloe Humphrys is concerned the use of local materials (often reclaimed) is all important. The basic idea is to reduce the carbon footprint of whatever we do, and that means reducing the number of miles that materials must travel.

In other words, the basis of our garden design could reflect our local surroundings, and the materials that are locally available.

I think another aspect of this is to try wherever possible to source locally grown indigenous plants. This is good for nature, good for biosecurity and good for local business.

I have noticed another trend: a definite move away from linear borders beloved of those like myself who adore herbaceous plants.

Borders now have more curves according to the latest designers, and lawns are in the past! Mixed low maintenance planting schemes are the preferred option.

So, to sum up, our gardens will become more naturalistic and wildlife friendly, and perhaps be more enjoyable requiring less maintenance. Now there’s a thought.

As always Happy Gardening.

Are your taxes managed efficiently?

property income or investment income between you to reduce your income tax liability.

Are you making the most of your ISA allowance? If not, you may be paying income tax unnecessarily. Although interest rates are still relatively low, as these increase you could end up paying more income tax.

We are all looking to save where we can to help pay for life’s essentials. As part of this you should consider whether your finances are being managed in a tax efficient manner. Personal circumstances change regularly and reviewing your finances is often not towards the top of many people’s job list.

Here are some points which may help you:

If you are married or in a civil partnership could your income, be split more tax efficiently? If one spouse pays a higher rate of income tax than the other then why not move assets between you.

Provided the correct processes are followed then you could move

If you invest in Stocks and Shares ISAs you will also benefit from the capital gains tax exemptions as opposed to owning investments out with an ISA.

Are you able to make use of any employer benefits to reduce your tax liability and costs?

There are tax efficient benefits such as the cycle to work scheme, using salary sacrifice schemes, (which may be effective in saving tax under the Child Benefit High Income Charge rules) or mobile phones.

Do you make charitable donations? Many charities are struggling with reduced incomes following the pandemic as well as increased need for their services.

If you make charitable donations make sure that you complete a gift aid declaration and pass this to the charity.

Not only will the charity be able to reclaim 20% basic rate tax but if you are a higher rate taxpayer you will be able to claim additional relief on your tax return. However, remember that you can only claim gift aid relief if you are a taxpayer. You could also consider gifting shares rather than cash and claim capital gains tax relief.

If you have personal investments, are you making the most of the annual capital gains tax exemption?

Currently you do not pay capital gains tax on gains below £12,300. Unfortunately, this allowance cannot be carried forward. If it is not used in one year it is lost. Neither can it be transferred between spouses. However, it is possible to transfer assets between spouses tax free before sale, therefore enabling two annual exemptions to be claimed.

If you have any questions regarding the above or would like to discuss any tax problems or queries with us, please contact us for a FREE initial consultation.

prep for your Spring garden now!

Read this article in full – visit www.village-link.co.uk

As we head out of one of the hottest summers on record into the cooler Autumn and Winter months, ensuring our trees and shrubs are primed to cope with the transition, will give your garden a better chance to thrive next Spring.

Here are a few simple things you can do to prep in the Autumn and Winter months:

sure dead branches are removed. Any damaged or diseased branches need to be removed also.

Remove any suckers to stop unwanted spreading and energy sapping of the main plant or tree. Removing suckers should be done all year round however, not only at this time of year.

Finally, look at the overgrowth, if the branches are stretching out over pathways, patios or if the growth is starting to become invasive or protruding, these areas need pruning back.

If you are unsure of how exactly to prune, please speak to a professional, as if done incorrectly, pruning can kill off a plant or tree for good.

could go one step further and put up some plastic sheeting as protection, pin each side down to the ground with wooden pegs or use a large plastic bag over the top on those nights that are forecast to be freezing.

Pruning at the right time for each type of tree or shrub is crucial. Please always double check your tree or shrubs specific needs. However, a general rule for most Summer (May through August) deciduous flowering shrubs and trees is that they will need pruning in the late Autumn or throughout the Winter –between Jan to March.

Flowering Cherries can be pruned in the late Summer and Conifers in the Autumn. Make

Newly planted trees are susceptible to harsh cold Winters. Keeping them moist but not waterlogged will be essential in their growth throughout the first couple of years. Mulching can help with this. It locks moisture in on dryer days, it helps reduce the number of weeds around the roots and helps prevent any frost getting into the soil. Spread around 3 inches of bark, peat, compost, or other organic material around the tree. If there is going a particularly severe winter in your area, you

The beginning of Autumn is a great time to plant trees, perennials, bulbs, and shrubs – the soil should be warm and moist from the Summer season, and the air temperatures will have cooled –the perfect balance for planting new trees or shrubs.

A vibrant Azalea or fragrant Daphne will bring a much-needed boost to your Autumn Garden. Or try a climbing Clematis, with its many species there is something to suit everyone.

Autumn is a really great time to have a good tidy up before the cold weather hits and you will want to be out in the garden less. Collect up all the loose leaves as they start to fall and add them to the compost heap. Clean all tool and equipment, putting away anything that won’t be needed for a while. Cover drains with plastic covers to keep them free from leaves and mulch. It’s also a good time to do one last de-weeding session. It’s easy to think they’ll die off in the winter, but if you remove them now, they won’t return when the weather warms up.

THe LaKes Man

first I thought I’d cut them to ribbons, until I realised I’d grabbed bunches of bilberries amongst the heather. Panting and gasping, I reached a rocky gateway at 1500 feet. The view out to the lake and the road, far below, is tremendous, accentuated, of course, by the sudden fall of the mountain. I could still see my car in the car park at Lanthwaite Green, a tiny black and white dot in the distance.

The clouds are just skimming the summit and the air, for midJuly is distinctly chilly. On goes the fleece and long trousers.

The top of the fell is in truth, rather dull, all the excitement being centered on Grasmoor End to the west and Dove Crags to the North. There is a large cairn which would provide shelter in bad weather.

From Cockermouth, head for the beautiful Buttermere valley and the first lake you come across is Crummock Water — the road along the shore of which, must be one of the most scenic drives in the country, with towering mountains leaping up from the level strath of the valley.

Of those mountains, very few are more imposing than the tremendous bulk of Grasmoor, towering above on the left.

Whilst mostly having a covering of grass (nothing to do with the name however, for that is derived from grise, the home of the wild boar) it has a very steep and rocky west face, composed of fractured Skiddaw slate — which looks tremendously off putting from below. It’s honestly best to just set off, rather than looking at it for too long.

The key to the ascent is a ribbon of light-coloured scree, plainly in sight from below. The route, at first through bracken, continues up a lung- bursting five hundred feet of mobile stones, all heading down the mountain as you tread on them, the climb becoming more of a case of hanging on to anything that’s stable and firm, of which there is precious little!

Looking down at my hands, at

The rock gateway marks the start of the crags proper, a horizontal terrace there is good to walk along, whilst catching your breath. Thereafter it’s a further scramble up an arete to a pinnacle of rock at the two-

thousand-foot contour. The path continues now on the left-hand edge of the crags for another five hundred feet to the peak of Grasmoor End.

If you think, at this point, you have completed the climb - and heaven knows you deserve to believe it - prepare for a disappointment!

The true top of the mountain is considerably further on, another four hundred feet of ascent awaits. Happily, the gradient has eased. The view out towards the Scafells is a very impressive one but sadly not on display today.

At this point in the day, I hadn’t spotted another person but on leaving the summit I came across one or two. One couple stood and had a chat, another red - faced gentleman ignored me and stared intently at his map. It is a long steady drop to Coledale Hause. Hause means ‘gate’ in Lake District terminology and the crossroads takes me left and west to the long descent of Gasgale Gill. This is a lovely route with many cascades, a bubbling cheery beck with some extraordinary golden rocks in the bed of the stream. Parts of the path above and alongside are a tad precarious but take care and you’ll be just fine.

A slither down a small rockface is adrenalin - inducing at the very end of the walk. Nothing too scary, though!
