Welcome

S

triking down a man in his prime, Man Flu is suffered at some point each year by 99.7% of the adult male population. To be clear, that statistic I’ve just made up and lacks any scientific basis. As this is clearly now an officially recognised condition it’s good that husbands and wives are prepared. 1. The warning signs: The house is a mess. The dog needs a walk and a wash. The children are fighting, and also need a wash. The dinner needs cooking and the bin is overflowing. You, the typical man flu sufferer, would dearly love to get stuck in with all of the above, but you sense a tingle in your nostril that can only mean one thing: you’d better lie down and take some rest, so that you can repair yourself sufficiently to help out later on. Yes, good idea! 2. The rapid deterioration: The symptoms are starting to spread. Is that a rash? Should you call the NHS helpline? Your wife tells you crisply, that that won’t be necessary and inquire politely just how long you intend to be ill exactly. 3. Tea and sympathy: “There’s something going round at work,” you suggest. “A cup of tea would be great if you’re putting the kettle on.” “Sure,” your other half replies. “Right after I’ve roasted a chicken, dusted and hoovered the hallway.” 4. The false dawn: You rally round a bit, around dinner time. Not enough to leave your bed, mind, but enough to consume two portions of food. “Starve a fever, feed a cold,” you smile weakly, and with great fortitude, as you hand back your empty

plate. You want to show your wife that you’re determined to soldier on with good humour at the bleakest of times. Your wife somehow refrains from smashing the empty plate against the door frame. 5. Transition from bed to sofa: Once dinner’s been cleared up and the kids are asleep, you manage to leave your sickbed and hobble to the sofa. “Feeling better?” you hear through gritted teeth. Still a bit ropy,” you say, with the same weak smile. “Better take it easy for a bit longer.” Yep....take all the time you need....until... 6. The sudden and dramatic recovery: Two days later, you are offered a ticket to the football. “What a shame,” your wife says brightly. “You’re far too ill to go and sit in the cold for two hours.” “Actually,” you say, “I’m OK now. I think I’ve finally shaken this off...the fresh air will do me good anyway”. Don’t say you havent been warned. Congratulations to our many winners from our last issue: Stephanie Armstrong who won our book “Eye of the Storms”, Graham Simpson who won a pair of tickets to see the Reel Rock 12 movie at Rheged, Duncan from Great Corby who found Winston and Poppy who rescued Bear from Cumwhinton!!

Carlisle’s Past

HISTORY

the original cumberland infirmary

A

ccording to the Carlisle Patriot the Cumberland Infirmary was completed in 1832 for the princely sum of £8356-5s-1d, the whole of this money being raised by public subscription. It had 52 beds but more could be accommodated in an emergency. The paper went into great detail regarding the architecture of the building, describing the portico as:- “a tetra-style portico, of the Doric order, after the Choragic Monument of Thrasyllus and Thrisycles, at Athens – modified to meet the expenditure.” One might wonder how many of the paper’s readers would understand or appreciate this description! The principal and end fonts of the building were:“constructed of polished white stone procured from the chalk quarries of this city – with the exception of that for the massive fluted pillars of the portico, and the pilasters (sic), which are formed of huge blocks of Yorkshire stone, none of sufficient size being to be had in this county.” This explains the siting of the infirmary near to the canal basin, as the larger blocks and the better quality stone came from a quarry near Leeds. It travelled by canal to Liverpool and then by sea to the Carlisle Canal, a distance of more than 200 miles. This was not always without mishap as the Patriot described, “Some men employed in unloading a ship-load of stone, in the Canal Basin, had a narrow escape from destruction a few days ago. Whilst a block of stone of an immense weight was being drawn

up, the rope broke, and it was precipitated with great violence down the hatchway. Two or three were below at the time, but not the slightest injury was inflicted upon any of them.” On W H Nutter’s 1834 etching of the new infirmary one can see the masts of ships in the canal basin beyond. Many extensions to the building were added in the 19th and early 20th century as the infirmary grew in size. It was not until the building of the modern infirmary at the end of the 20th century that many of these rambling extensions were removed to leave the building looking almost as originally built. However, the more modern photograph shows that an extra storey was added to the original building, probably later in the 19th century. Much more information on the history of our city and how the Carlisle Canal shaped its development in the early 19th century can be found in the book The Carlisle Ship Canal, available direct from the author and publisher at www.p3publications.com , at Bookends, Carlisle and at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.

tissue DONATION

Tracy Lazonby (final journey funerals) shares her experience & information to enable family and friends to take control by offering genuine choices, at a very difficult time What Is Tissue Donation?

M

ost people are aware that hundreds of lives are saved every year by donated organs, such as hearts and kidneys. They may not realise that donated tissues such as skin, bone and heart valves can dramatically improve the quality of life for others and even save them. As many as 50 people can be helped by the donation from one person.

Which tissues can be donated?

Many kinds of tissues can be donated after death: Eyes can help restore sight to people with cornea problems (the clear part of the eye). This may be as a result of damage caused by eye disease or injury, or defects from birth, and the white part of the eye (the sclera) can be used in operations to rebuild the eye. Heart valves can be transplanted to save the lives of children born with heart defects and adults with damaged heart valves. Skin can be used as a natural dressing, helping treat people with serious burns. This can save the lives by stopping infections, can help reduce scarring and reduces pain. Bone is important for people receiving artificial joint replacements, or replacing bone that has been removed due to illness or injury. It helps reduce pain and improve mobility. Tendons the elastic-like cords that attach bones and muscles to each other can be donated to help rebuild damaged joints, which helps people move more easily.

6

Can you choose which tissues to donate?

Yes. Only those tissues for which you have given permission will be donated.

Can anyone become a tissue donor?

Almost anyone can be considered as a tissue donor, however, there are some rare exemptions. To ensure that all donated tissues are safe, the donor’s medical and lifestyle history is assessed similar to blood donors, to protect the person receiving the tissue from infection.

How long after death can tissue be donated?

The best time is within 24 hours after someone has died. However, sometimes it is possible to donate up to 48 hours after death.

Can you tell if a patient has been a tissue donor?

How to register

Registering to be a tissue donor is quick and easy. To be a donor after your death, you simply need to join the organ donor register and tell your closest family and friends about your decision. You can join online at www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/tissuedonation Or call 0300123 23 23

Further Information

For further information please visit nhsbt.nhs.uk/tissuedonation If you would like to discuss tissue donation in more detail, you can contact a Nurse from the National Referral Centre on: 0800 432 0559 (freephone)

Throughout the donation process, the donor is treated with respect and dignity. After donation, the specialist nursing team will ensure that the donor maintains a natural appearance. Of course you may see your loved one after they have donated and before they are laid to rest if you wish.

Will tissue donation interfere with funeral arrangements?

Donation will not delay any funeral arrangements.

After donation will we receive any information?

Yes, with permission an NHSBT specialist nurse will write a thank you letter and provide information about the donation and contact details. Tissue donation is entirely voluntary and dependent on the generosity of patients and their families.

hy do I always pick the wrong queue at the checkout in a supermarket? No word of a lie it happens every time. I do try and suss out the queues and go for the one that looks like it is moving the fastest, however, the minute I join it the opposite happens. Someone has a query, something isn’t priced so they have to find someone to go and check, the list goes on. As I wait patiently, suddenly over the tannoy you hear that they are going to open ‘till number 5’. What a dilemma, should I move or stay put. The problem I have here is

that I am never quick enough to get to the opening checkout because about three other people have run there at the speed of light and beat me to it, so I normally stay put. Annoyingly, I then notice that those three people have now gone through and have unloaded their shopping into their cars while I am still in the queue. I was once in a shop in town and joined the ‘quick’ queue. There were only two ladies in front of me who didn’t appear to have a lot in their shopping baskets. The first lady finished, so far so good. But then the next lady had bought about

a hundred tiny little gifts (the type that would go in a goody bag at a children’s party) which I hadn’t seen secretly stashed at the bottom of her basket. The man behind me gave up and went to join another queue and quickly went through. Should I join him? As usual I decided to stay put; surely it wouldn’t take that long. Two more people came behind me but decided to change queue, and they too had gone through the tills before me. I’m sure they were all home having a cup of tea by the time I finally made it through. Oh the joys of shopping!! Anyhow, here is a recipe which will keep you warm during these cold winter months. When we make a fruit salad we would normally think of serving it cold. However, why not try it warm. Here is my recipe for a winter warm fruit salad. Put 600g dried fruit (ie. prunes, apricots, cranberries, figs etc) and 700ml cold water into a pan. Add 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar, 1 vanilla pod slit lengthways with seeds scraped out, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 cloves and 1 star anise. Bring to the boil slowly until the sugar dissolves and then simmer for 5 minutes. Add a tin of peach slices and simmer for a further 5 minutes. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Discard the vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and star anise. Serve warm (not hot) with whipped cream (add a bit of brandy) or mascarpone. Delicious. www.village-link.co.uk

Brampton Golf Club, a James Braid designed course established 13:16 in 1909 and located in beautiful heathland countryside has just received the GolfMark award. GolfMark is an official seal of approval for clubs which successfully work to develop the game in four ways: • By attracting new members and encouraging existing members to play more • Using practical business planning to develop the club • Offering coaching and playing opportunities for all golfers • Ensuring safeguarding policies are in place The course is a classic heathland, sand based well drained, design with undulating fairways and fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with a

Peter Mossop who led the club’s push to GolfMark, said: “ Brampton is a great club, it’s very friendly, welcoming and forward-thinking. This award helps us to spread that message and to tell people that children are safe and secure here and that we understand about beginner golfers. re you debating whether to purchase a sport utility vehicle (SUV)? The new BMW X3 could be just the one for you. Here are some of the most common reasons people give when they buy an SUV. Do you consider them valid for you? Reason 1: Safety Back in the 80’s many SUV’s had the nickname “a wine bar special” – rolling over at the hint of a corner (not mentioning any names.... Vitara). Most manufacturers nowadays have developed features to reduce the possibility. The X3 is indeed larger than the old model, in fact it’s as big as the first models of the X5. With this new model, there is very little body roll which is very reassuring if you are not used to driving these types of cars. Reason 2: Caravan I towed my caravan once with a 3 series touring.....it didn’t go well.... the term the “tale was wagging the dog” comes to mind. The X3 on the otherhand has a towing capacity of 2000kg, which would happily drag my Caravan and help me clog up the British roads. Reason 3: Acoustic Glass Have you ever seen the film Ace Ventura - Pet Detective? Remember the scene where Ace (Jim Carrey) is trying to track down potential suspects who have kidnapped the Miami Dolphins mascot – he is in an apartment and he’s trying to make the point that how could the neighbour hear the commotion when the sound deadening patio doors were closed! He then steps outside and

People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust

shouts in loud continuous tone whilst opening and closing the door ahhhhhhhh........ ahhhhhhhh..........ahhhhhhhhh....... that’s what it’s like in the cabin of the X3, it deadens the ambient sounds from outside, traffic noise, wolf whistles etc, however you can still here the sirens of the emergency services. Reason 4: The Odd Cold Snap BMW hasn’t got the greatest reputation for being able to get you home safely when there is the sight of a few snow flakes – I know, I’ve owned several, one of which literally took me through a hedge backwards. The X3 is capable of getting about in all weathers with its advanced X-Drive system (which I have no idea how it works but seems to do the job). Reason 5: Off Road Not off road in the sense of mounting the grass verge whilst on the school run but real off-roading as the X3 is more than capable with it’s great ground clearance and visability.

Many thanks to Gavin and the team at Lloyd BMW, Carlisle. Tel: 01228 542222

Mönch and Jungfrau. Two million people a year make the once-in-a-lifetime trip to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station at 3454m. The train that chugs up from Kleine Scheidegg ramps up the drama as it goes into Eiger, to emerge at the Sphinx meteorological station. At the summit, sensational views of the Aletsch Glacier and never-ending Alpine peaks unfold. Besides the staggering panorama, there’s an Ice Palace and Snow Fun Park to explore. YOUR TREES AND YOUR LEGAL

DUTY of CARE local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS

“Scare-mongering in some cases has resulted in trees being felled unnecessarily,” says Andrew Edgar from Orchard Tree Surgery

T

ree owners have a legal duty of care in respect of their trees, and may be liable for injury to others caused by the fall of a tree or branch. In an attempt to avoid what they perceive to be a risk, some landowners have simply removed trees entirely – but Andrew says the answer is actually more straight-forward than that Under a legal framework of both civil and criminal law, the responsibilities for the health and safety of those ‘on or near the land upon which a tree stands’ rests with the owner of that land. “Landowners just need to have a plan or strategy for their trees,” Andrew explains. “They need to start with a ‘stock take’ of the trees on their land: What have they got? What condition are they in? Who might be at risk from them? Using this information, the landowner can then establish a plan to manage risks in a balanced way so that those trees can be enjoyed safely. Only if a tree is identified as a significant risk is removal, perhaps, the answer.” Andrew owns a well-established tree surgery company based in Carlisle. He works closely with the arboricultural association and with his team of arborists and tree surveyors, he advises both commercial and domestic clients on how to correctly manage their trees. Could a landowner perform this ‘stock take’ themselves? “Depending on the complexity or type of inspection required, and their

16

own knowledge base – age of trees, proximity to public areas, signs of disease etc. – it would be possible for a land owner to do this themselves. It’s always worth calling in an expert in case of any doubt but this should not become a financially burdensome exercise,” Andrew comments. Orchard Tree Surgery offer tree surveys and reports which will let you the condition of your trees, and if any work is required to keep them safe. Does the same legislation apply to householders? “Yes, it does, but we have to think about a proportionate response here,”

What would Andrew’s advice be to anyone who is responsible for trees? “Get to know them! Be vigilant for any changes, both to the tree and in terms of potential risks. If in any doubt, call an expert. And document your observations and actions; should you find yourself in a legal situation, any records that you have pro-actively managed your trees could help provide supporting evidence that a landowner has taken reasonable care.”

In an attempt to avoid what they perceive to be a risk, some landowners have simply removed trees entirely

Andrew is quick to caution. “A large landowner, for example, with acres of historic woods, roadside trees and lots of visitors is likely to need a more comprehensive tree management strategy. However, if you’re a householder with just a couple of trees, we can scale down and simplify the actions you might need to take”.

Question. What’s the scariest ascent in the Lake District? he answer probably depends on conditions on the day, footwear worn and the general degree of nerve that a scrambler possesses but a prime contender has to be Jack’s Rake on Pavey Ark in the Langdale valley. I have climbed it three times so far, always in good weather on dry rock. My latest attempt was in October last year on a dry sunny day (after considerable rainfall the previous night). Mike and I had talked of climbing it for some time but as we drove through huge pools of water on the way there, I began to have second thoughts. The Rake is a natural drainage channel and I feared a slip along the way could bring my fellwalking days (and possibly my life) to an abrupt end. Or Mike might fall and I’d have that on my conscience for the rest of my days. The lakes in the centre of the district were like glass. Thirlmere in particular displaying a perfect upsidedown reflection of the trees on the far side. The Autumn colours were ablaze in the cool morning air. We arrived at Dungeon Ghyll, parked in the huge car park directly below the Langdale Pikes and set off alongside Mill Gill enjoying a stony route alongside the churning cascades flowing down from Stickle Tarn. The moment of arrival at the tarn is always memorable, the great crag fronting Pavey Ark now directly opposite, with the diagonal line of Jack’s Rake clearly visible. The eye is deceived into believing the cliff face it crosses to be vertical. The truth is, it more or less is! My overriding thoughts now were concerns for our safety. Mike had slipped on the way up, and shortly afterwards so had I, landing heavily

T

on my arm. The rugged facade of the Ark, normally mid-grey in colour, was black and streaming with water. I was on the horns of a dilemma. Mike is approaching seventy and has wanted to conquer this route for some considerable time. The day was sunny and calm. But having been up there a time or two before, I knew the terrain; the sense of exposure and steep drops were quite apparent. Wet conditions could be lethal. Just as we were heading around the tarn through some very gloopy bogs, we had a meeting of minds and decided to leave Jack’s Rake until another day. There are alternatives available, we opted to climb North Rake, which is without perils and ascends the right hand side of Pavey Ark through a breach in the crags. This is a very handy face-saver for timid souls who don’t like the look of Jack’s Rake when they see it at close range. We arrived at the summit in strong sunshine with a tremendous view over Great Langdale, a magnificent surround of mountain summits rearing up and the sparkling blue tarn shimmering far below us. The ground falls away very sharply to the east, so take care up there, especially if there are children in the party. We went on to climb Harrison Stickle, Pike O’ Stickle and Loft Crag before descending to the car. The slight disappointment at not doing what we set out to was tempered with the bonus of not having an accident. We saw a couple of walkers on Jack’s Rake in brightly coloured clothing, picking their way along the cleft, later someone we were talking to told us they had found it very slippery. That’s my advice folks, it will always be there another day. Stay safe!

ow the experience of war impacted on the town, from the initial enthusiasm for sorting out the German kaiser in time for Christmas 1914, to the gradual realization of the enormity of human sacrifice the families of Carlisle were committed to as the war stretched out over the next four years. A record of the growing disillusion of the people, their tragedies and hardships and a determination to see it through. Already an important railway junction, with local industrial and commercial interests reflecting its historical position on the border with Scotland, Carlisle became a key settlement in the Great War. The Carlisle story includes the arrival of Belgian Refugees; the care of wounded men passing through the city on hospital trains; recruiting the Lonsdale Battalion; dealing with the aftermath of the Gretna rail disaster; caring for the wounded brought to the local hospitals after major battles; the effect of the Gretna Munitions factory on the city and state ownership of public houses and breweries. Beneath these new activities normal life continued with children going to school, local government dealing with a growing population and daily work and commerce.

o, lesson’s learned during 2017. 1) do not strike a match in the direction of yourself. 2) look down and check the handbrake light is on red before alighting your car. Fortunately the only casualties: a well-loved Phase Eight gilet, and mum and dad’s flower bed. The first had enjoyed many years of wear and the other will grow back - eventually.

The opinions of others are far less significant than you may think Last week I lost my ‘phone which, in itself, is not a biggie. Finding myself mildly distracted whilst walking, I had not realised it had fallen from my bum bag. Everyone should have a bum bag. Arriving home, it took another two hours before realising my ‘phone was somewhere on the fell. Alone. Findmyphone confirmed this. Knowing this meant a return up fell, I summoned Julia a friend who requires little in explanation. One look from me to Julia and she just knows what I need. This works both ways. We took off - abandoning my car at the top of the track – as daylight was diminishing fast. We marched in the direction Findmyphone had suggested. Julia found it and, after we had allowed ourselves a minute or two for jumps of joy, returned back toward my car. In the distance we could see quite a melee. A farm wagon plus trailer; at least three humans and two dogs were in wait, beside my car. We picked up our pace. Began to giggle, waving frantically. I felt carefree and alive and unable to run for toffee. Farmer was fine. We were fine. Dogs were fine and I had my ‘phone. No harm done. What struck me was this. We may feel unfairly judged by an individual but remember this. The opinions of others are far less significant than you may think. It really doesn’t matter. Liberate yourself (you may need a jolt) and spare yourself the emotional roller coaster of giving a jot. Your energies are better spent focusing on the present and for that see lessons 1 & 2. Let laughter speak louder than words. T: 01768 896733 | M: 07976 266335 Email: carol@pilates-cumbria.co.uk www.pilates-cumbria.uk
