I

Welcome

needed to purchase an item the other day, and as I wasn't prepared to face the never ending demands of my personal information online, I headed into town. I was trying to purchase a coat for my daughter - a fairly straightforward task you would think. Typically, however, the size of coat in the style she wanted wasn’t available in store, so I asked the assistant if they had any more in their stockroom. “I’m sorry”, came the reply, "it’s just what’s out". Nothing can be said to be certain in this world, except death, taxes and the size of an item you want to purchase not being instore when you need it. "However", said the lady enthusiastically, "you can buy it from our online store and, if you do that, you’ll get a discount voucher to redeem in this shop”. "Great", I said, "can you go-ahead then and order it for me and I'll call back in and collect it?". Reasonable request I thought. "No, I’m sorry”, came the reply, "you have to order it. I'm not allowed to do that for you. You'll need the item code. I'm not allowed to get that for you, but it's the last bit after the three letters that preceed it". And, off she went. So left standing in the store I had wished to make a purchase from, I'm now forced to key in the never ending demands of my personal information to shop online! After what seemed like an age, going through many pages of verification and checking which windows had traffic lights in them to confirm I'm not a robot, I managed finally to order the item. Buying it was what I had hoped to achieve, but it seems that was a step too far. And what if I want to return this item? I'm forced to go somewhere even more time-consuming and crowded than the original store I wanted to purchase it from: the post office! How exactly this is supposed to improve shopping is lost on me. If online shopping is the future, no wonder it looks bleak. Congratulations to Millie aged 9 who found all the Winston’s from the last issue, and to Sophie who rescued Bear from Lowry Hill.

CARLISLE’S PAST

HISTORY

CARNABY'S FOLLY

T

he rainwater heads which can be seen on the front of Tullie House today show the date of construction as 1689. The plumber, John Carnaby, who almost certainly crafted these lived in Abbey Street. John was contracted by the Dean and Chapter for repairs to the cathedral and other lead roofs on 12 November 1687. A plumber then was a specialist who would have wealthy patrons, as few could afford the costs of leadwork. There was no running water that would require lead pipes, other than for rainwater and pump heads for wells. In addition to the normal roofing work which would require lead guttering and flashings, he would cast decorative rainwater heads, ornate garden cisterns, lead coffins, brewing leads and fishing weights.

1689 Tullie House rainwater head

A re-construction of how Carnaby's Folly and well ( left) might have looked in the Market Place.

John was probably also responsible for the very ornate rainwater head at the back of Eaglesfield House in Abbey Street (where the same moulds were used as at Tullie House) as well as a 1717 lead downpipe on the keep of Carlisle Castle. As a Guild member and Freeman he became a city councillor. Through Carnaby’s position as a councillor he carried favour with Carlisle Corporation and in December 1696 they ordered: “that John Carnaby in consideration of making two pumps for use in the well in the street and building four fish shambles there at his own charge......he have liberty to take up 40 acres of ground upon the Kingmoor on the east side”. He was thus being paid in kind for his work and materials. A condition of this agreement was that he was to maintain the

pumps during his life in “sufficient repair”. The well referred to was in the Market Place near the Cross and at the north end of the butchers’ shambles near the junction with Scotch Street. The building over the well became popularly known as Carnaby’s Folly. No views survive of the building constructed by John Carnaby over the well. Shambles were wooden stalls often protected by a slate roof. Castle drainpipe Railton Longrigg wrote in Hutchinson’s History of Cumberland that “at the north end of the shambles was a well over which was a building placed on pillars called Carnaby’s folly.... on the front of each side of this building was the fish market.” More about John Carnaby can be found in the book “Carlisle’s First Learning Centre – Tullie House” available from Tullie House, local booksellers and my website www.p3publications.com

JANE’S KITCHEN

T

FOOD

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

here are times when my memory is terrible. When it comes to remembering people and places from my childhood, remembering passwords etc there really is no hope! There is one area, however, where my memory is particularly good (I dont know why, its just one of those things) and that's finding a recipe that I have made before. Even if its ages since I made it, or have only made something once, I can usually remember exactly which cookery book it was in and go straight to it. Recently I had some cooked chicken to use up and was trying to think of a quick and easy meal to make. I suddenly remembered a recipe I used to make years ago, and I knew exactly where to find it, so off I went in search of my cookbook. Now there will be those of you of a certain age who will remember this series of cookbooks. They were called ‘Dairy Cookbooks’ and they are timeless. I thought my memory was playing tricks with me when

I thought we’d bought this book off the milk man, but it’s true, we did. I think there were a few different editions but the one I have got is called ‘The Dairy Book of Family Cookery’. My book has lost its front and back covers, but the recipes are still all there and I really enjoyed looking through it again. It is one of the best cookbooks for soups, and has lots of other great recipes, all of which contain some sort of dairy product, obviously! So here is the recipe I went in search of. It is called ‘Cheesy Chicken Fricassee’. It is a great midweek recipe and one children will love. It also uses up cooked chicken which is always a good

recipe to keep to hand. Melt 50g butter in a frying pan and gently fry one finely chopped onion until tender but not browned. Add 225g button mushrooms which have been wiped and sliced, and fry until just cooked. Drain. In a separate pan melt a further 50g butter and stir in 40g plain flour and cook for 1 minute stirring. Remove from the heat and gradually stir in 1 pint milk. Return to the heat and bring to the boil continually stirring. Season with salt and pepper then stir in 275g cooked chicken, which has been cut into 2inch pieces, a small tin of sweetcorn, 1tbsp chopped parsley and the musrooms and onion. Cook for three to four minutes then remove from heat. Finally add 200g grated cheddar cheese and stir until the cheese melts. Serve with some plain boiled rice. Delicious! Jane ferguson

What it's like to be British: Saying “anywhere here’s fine” when the taxi’s directly outside your front door • Watching with quiet sorrow as you receive a different haircut to the one you requested • Saying hello to a friend in the supermarket, then creeping around like a burglar to avoid seeing them again • Overtaking someone on foot and having to keep up the uncomfortably fast pace until safely over the horizon • Filming an entire fireworks display on your phone, knowing full well you’ll never, ever watch it again.

TRAVEL GUIDE

I

TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK SHARES TRAVEL IDEAS FOR THE COMING MONTHS

’m going to try and allay any concerns you might have about solo travel. People travel solo for lots of different reasons. Before I met my husband, I travelled on my own quite regularly on small group adventure holidays. Some people prefer to travel on their own; it’s quite liberating, not having to think about someone else all the time. Others travel solo because their partner doesn’t share the same interests, or sadly, some travel on their own because they have no choice, and they feel more secure as part of a larger group. Whatever the reason for travelling solo, it’s a growing trend, and there are specialist operators out there who only sell holidays for solos, such as Just You. Some tour operators offering escorted tours recognise this growing need and have dedicated dates for solo travellers; Wendy Wu, Titan Tours amongst others. So what kind of holiday can you do as a solo traveller? Almost everything that you might do with a partner or friend; culture, adventure, activity, relaxation, wildlife, wellness, food, cruising. Why not just dip your toe in the water and join a group holiday just for a few days? You won't really be on your own. You'll get your own room, or on some more adventurous holidays, if you're prepared to share with another person of the same sex, you'll get a reduction

Be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things on the holiday price. Shared activities and meals, but enough down time that you can spend on your own if you want to. You might be an expert solo traveller, or have yet to take that step, but here are a couple of tips to help you on your way. Join a small group tour As humans we are naturally sociable creatures, but for some that is more difficult. Booking on a small group tour (usually between 8-16 people) means that you’ll be with people during the day. Come evening meal time, you’ll be chatting with your travel companions about your experiences that day, this works particularly well on cruises, activity holidays, safaris. Holidays which involve being hands on, such as active sailing trips, or volunteering holidays help to break down those barriers as you’re all in it together.

Follow your interests If you have a specific interest, why limit it to the local walking group at home? Going on an activity holiday such as hiking, cycling, birdwatching, that common interest will get you all talking to each other, and by the end of the holiday, you’ll feel like you’ve known your fellow travellers for a long time. You’ll get plenty more adventures that way and you’ll discover the real destination by travelling ‘slowly’. I do have some clients who prefer to be completely on their own, so if this applies to you, I can arrange something bespoke for you, such as a safari with a driver/guide, a wellness holiday in Bali, or a few days exploring a city of your choice. Travelling is all about having new experiences, so be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. You can still join a guided excursion for a day, or engage with local people on a homestay visit. If you feel ready to take the plunge, then please get in touch if you need some advice, and I’ll be happy to find a holiday that’s right for you. Travelling on your own doesn’t have to be scary. Take a leap of faith, and you’ll never look back. Please get in touch with me for any information or to book your next holiday. Home visits are also possible.

Edward II is famously one of England’s most unsuccessful kings, as utterly different from his war-like father Edward I as any man possibly could be, and the first English king to suffer the fate of deposition. Highly unconventional, even eccentric, he was an intriguing personality, and his reign of nineteen and a half years from 1307 to 1327 was a turbulent period of endless conflict which ended when his own queen led an invasion of his kingdom. Following in the Footsteps of Edward II presents a new take on this most unconventional and puzzling of kings, from the magnificent Caernarfon Castle where he was born in 1284 shortly after his father conquered North Wales, to his favourite residences at King’s Langley in Hertfordshire and Westminster, to the castle of Berkeley in Gloucestershire where he supposedly met his brutal death in September 1327, to Gloucester Cathedral, where his tomb and alabaster effigy still exist and are among the greatest glories surviving from medieval England.

caring for HEDGES from LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] proud to be part of the arboricultural association

A

regularly maintained hedge will provide a thick, full, smart boundary to your property. Miss a few trimming sessions however, and you will soon have a hedge that has lost its shape and a more difficult job on your hands! It is much easier to give the hedge a frequent light trim than it is to give it an infrequent heavy prune. WHEN TO CUT HEDGES An informal hedge, one where the natural outline of the plants are preserved, will require a maintenance trim once a year between spring and summer. A formal hedge should be trimmed two to three times a year during the growing season. Fast growing species may need a more frequent trim to keep the hedge under control. HOW TO TRIM A HEDGE You will need hand-held hedge shears or a powered hedge trimmer. The latter will make the job of trimming a large hedge much quicker and won’t leave you with tired arms.

A very large formal hedge

The sides of the hedge should be tapered in slightly so that the top is narrower than the bottom When using a powered hedge trimmer make sure you stay safe. Wear safety goggles and sturdy gloves. With an electric trimmer use a safety socket, and keep the cable away from the blade. Try draping the cable over one shoulder to avoid it trailing on the ground in front of you. Before starting clear the work area of any obstacles. Using power tools above shoulder height should be avoided so use a stable step ladder when trimming high hedges. To make the collection of clippings easier place a 2m wide plastic sheet under the hedge. This is an especially useful tip when cutting over gravel.

www.orchardtreesurgery.co.uk

Informal Hedges With an informal hedge you will only need to remove misplaced shoots with secateurs or loppers. Formal Hedge The hallmark of a formal hedge is that crisp straight edge and tight finish. If the hedge is only short then you could probably get away with cutting this by eye, stepping back occasionally to make sure you are on the right track. For a longer hedge, or an untrustworthy eye, create a cutting guide; place a cane into ground at both ends of the hedge then stretch a length of string between them. The sides of the hedge should be tapered in slightly so that the top is narrower than the bottom. This will allow sunlight and rainwater to reach the lower foliage and the ground, keeping the hedge thick and bushy across its entire height. As the hedge grows taller the angle of the taper can be decreased. When using a powered trimmer to cut the sides keep the blade parallel to the hedge and use a wide, sweeping motion, walking forwards as you work. You can always use shears to go back and cut any missed sprigs! Get some help For hedge maintenance to be effective you need to do it regularly. Leaving it will make the job more difficult next time. If you don’t have time trim your hedge, or are not confident in your ability, then you may do more damage than good. If you would prefer for a professional to take care then Orchard Tree Surgery offer a hedge trimming service. Beautifully maintained hedges can add immense appeal to your property so don’t miss the trim this spring.

he exhibition will include approximately eighty works in Oil, Watercolour and Pastel with a large variety of subject matter ranging from Lake District landscapes, UK coastal scenery and Venetian canals. Robert's main inspiration has always been to capture the light and atmosphere in a modern impressionistic style and the move to Cumbria has given him the opportunity to paint new and exciting landscapes.

Robert has been a member of the prestigious 'Royal Society of Marine Artist' since 1997. He has always encouraged people to 'take up a brush' and has subsequently written three instructional books, as well as four DVDs produced by Townhouse Films. He runs a weekly class in Scotby and demonstrates to painting groups and Art Societies throughout the area. To view works included in the exhibition visit: robertbrindley.com

M

y first fell, the summit of which I attained when I was only seven or eight years old, was Catbells. It is also at the time of writing my most recent conquest. With not very much daylight available at the tail end of December last year, Mike and I opted for a peak not too high and not too distant. Catbells is just shy of 1500 feet, but has one of the most recognisable shapes of any mountain in the Lake District. It more or less compels a person to climb it, rising up above Derwentwater in two great leaps. The natural line of ascent is from a cattle grid above Hawes End. Typically, we didn’t take route and opted for a steep climb up the North East slope instead. As we always say, fitness is assessed by recovery time, i.e. how quickly you stop panting and gasping and how soon your heartbeat stops pounding, once you stop moving. Happily, despite my advancing years, my recovery time is still fairly quick. Stopping also gives you a chance to admire the view, of course, which from Catbells is quite splendid in all directions.

Catbells is just shy of 1500 feet and has one of the most recognisable shapes of any mountain in the Lake District The ridge is topped at 1100 feet and a striking view of the Newlands Valley is suddenly in front of you, the ground falling away sharply to add impressiveness to the scene. Coleridge’s “camp of giant tents” are all well displayed; Hindscarth, Robinson, Causey Pike (seen end - ways on) and a distant peep into the Buttermere Valley, a wonderful vista. All of a sudden the wind is picking up. On the final tower, which I remember thinking as a small boy was the Matterhorn of the region, we are suddenly amongst lots of adults, small children and dogs. We had to take care as the sudden gusts were very strong

Excellent value for money with high exposure

and capable of knocking you off your feet. It’s actually great fun battling with the elements, even a sixty mile an hour gale. We put our hats on to keep our ears warm but almost immediately realised they were in danger of being blown off and lost. We put them back in our rucksacks and climbed the last few feet out of the wind. As we neared the summit there was an almighty din occurring just above our heads. We quickly realised it was the rasp of waterproof clothing, as people struggled to stand upright on the rocky little top, holding onto their children for dear life. What conditions must have been like atop Skiddaw at twice the height, I simply couldn’t imagine. Many years ago, a pal of mine described the blast of the wind up there as being so strong as to pick up pieces of slate off the path and to hurl them at him, causing potential injury. He decided to turn back as the experience was so alarming. There is no loose rock on the summit of Catbells, however. On a day such as this, you don’t stay there a moment longer than you need to. You certainly don’t unwrap your sandwiches or pour a cup of coffee out of a flask. The toggles on my coat were whipping my face causing stinging needles of pain and we yelled to each other, in the blast, that returning to the valley by Hause Gate was the best option, and pronto. Almost immediately (certainly within a few yards) there was no breeze whatsoever, indeed a feather on the path might lay undisturbed! We warned people ascending what conditions were like up on top, but they probably didn’t believe us. What an amazing world we live in! 25
