ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

A

side from velcro, time is the most mysterious substance in the universe. You can’t see it or touch it, yet a car garage can charge you upwards of seventy-five pounds per hour for it, without necessarily fixing anything. I’ve had some car trouble recently (can you tell?) Time though is an incredible thing. This Spring March/April issue marks our 4th Anniversary. According to the Anniversary milestone chart, we should be inundated by fruit or flowers as a gifts - it is Springtime after all. We won’t be holding our breath though. These past 4 years have seen the Village Link grow, and my wife and I would like to thank sincerely our advertisers who make this fine publication possible, our distributors and of course YOU, our loyal readers for all your continued support over the last 4 years. Have you ever heard the saying “If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a mortgage payment”? Well, I have a new one. Try being the editor of a magazine who, through his ignorance of squirrels, included an image of a Grey, instead of a Red Squirral on last issue’s welcome page (it did have a teeny bit of red on him hence the mistake). Don’t get me wrong - barely a day goes by without someone phoning, writing or emailing but to say I was inundated with emails highlighting my pitiful ignorance

would be an understatement. Compounded of course by the fact that Village Link HQ is one of the few remaining places in England that has a thriving native red squirrel population. So, I wholeheartedly apologise for the upset caused to many of our dear readers and for my complete ignorance. I hope the little fellow shown on this page is less offensive (I’m talking about the Red Squirrel!) Well done to James, Hannah and Tom for finding Bear in Cumwhitton Park and to Mrs Cogan on winning a bottle of fine Champagne in the crossword competition. We have some great prizes again packed into this issue. If you hurry, you can win a pair of tickets to see the tribute band to Thin Lizzy and AC/DC (JailBreak) in Ulverston - entries must be in by Wednesday 4th March! We also have a fabulous prize for the winner of the Spring Crossword - Afternoon tea for two at the Crown Hotel Wetheral, and, as usual, something for the kids. Bear has gone again, so there is £25 up for grabs to whoever finds him safe and sound. Thanks again and enjoy the spring!

lanning your own funeral is probably not something you have ever thought about, but by putting arrangements in place now, you can spare your loved ones from having to make the associated decisions at what will be a very emotional and stressful time. An added advantage in doing this is that it will ensure that the funeral costs are fixed at today’s prices. Consider this, in 2004 an average funeral cost £1,290 compared to £3,456 in 2014. Should this trend continue, then the costs could reach £6,220 by 2022. Other advantages in planning your funeral now are that you are able to have control over the content of your funeral service, be it religious or not. For example, you can make your own choices and express your wishes with regard to music, hymns, readings and so forth and any other details connected with your funeral.

TAX YEAR END: TAXING TIMES

by Mike Turney, Principal of Mike Turney Wealth Management, Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society It pays to get your finances in order before the end of the tax year hen the run-up to the end of the tax year coincides with the countdown to a general election, taxation and personal wealth are going to feature high up on the political agenda. Of course, no one knows the outcome of the May election until the ballot has closed and the votes are counted. And any changes to taxation rules will remain in the balance until a new government is formed. But there are some crucial questions for voters over the coming months. Will there be cuts to higher rate tax relief on pension contributions? Will there be a reduction of the burden of Inheritance Tax? Will Income Tax rates change?

Make gifts to reduce your Inheritance Tax liability Gift exemptions may appear minor in isolation, but their consistent use over the Take full advantage years can produce significant of your annual ISA savings and benefits. portunities that are available now are not lost. So, as the tax year-end fast approaches, savers and investors should consider the following:

Individuals can realise up to £11,000 of gains this tax year without having to pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT), which is worth £3,080 to a higher rate taxpayer. And a decision to crystallise gains up to this limit before the end of the tax year could reduce the amount of tax paid in the future. Married couples or civil partners should also not forget to make use of their spouse’s or partner’s CGT allowance. Transfer assets between spouses Don’t forget that transfers of assets between spouses are free from tax, which provides the opportunity to ensure that both optimise their available allowances and reliefs. It may be advantageous to transfer assets into joint ownership or to your spouse if they pay a lower rate of tax than you, which could save tax on future income and capital gains. The level and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances. An investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

T

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

here is a new trend sweeping the nation. Up-cycling. According to Wikipedia the first recorded use of this term was in 1994. The definition of up-cycling is ‘the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value’. With the likes of sites such as Pinterest and Etsy there is no end to ideas for upcycling and I just love it. I can spend ages scrolling down the ‘Craft and DIY’ section on Pinterest being inspired along the way. My ‘favourites’ box on my computer is full to the limit of ideas and projects; the only problem is finding the time to do all the things I want to do. I envy people who have taken a passion, made it an art form, and make a living from it. I long for the day when I can perfect something I love doing and make a living from it, but for now it is just a dream. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy my up-cycling. With spring in mind I came across this receipe for a spring casserole ‘Spring Chicken in a Pot’.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large heavy pan. Add one chopped onion and gently fry for 5 mins until softened. Add 500g of boneless chicken thighs and fry until lightly coloured. Add 300g small new potatoes, 425ml vegetable stock and plenty of freshly ground black pepper, then bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 30 mins until the potatoes are tender and the chicken is cooked. Add 350g broccoli cut into florets,350g shredded spring greens, 140g petit pois and a bunch of spring onions. Stir well, then return to the boil. Cover and cook for 5 mins more, stir in 2tbsp pesto and heat through. Who says casseroles are only for Autumn!

STOP WEARING

LYCRA?

I

Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland

was as shocked as the next person. Could this really be true? After all, the person bringing this earth shattering revelation was a qualified professional. It therefore had to have a ring of truth. The trouble was, I was left scratching my head. What alternative did I have? This, for me, is a way of life. Would a complete lifestyle change be the only way I could move forward? Would anyone even recognise me? The consequences made for grim reading. Committing this crime could result in flabby thighs and a saggy bottom.

If you wear ‘slumpy’ clothes, you enter a ‘slumpy’ mindset I sought an opinion and it seems there is still time to avoid this disaster. Stop wearing Lycra? It is my uniform of choice. Do Sweaty Betty make any clothing without Lycra? Delving deeper it is said that wearing Lycra weakens muscles. The Lycra holds in the quadriceps (thighs), buttocks (bum), and core (tummy). The Lycra does some of the job the muscles are supposed to do themselves. Switching the muscles off. I can’t even begin to consider the implications of wearing compression clothing. Clothing that takes two people to get you in. So I ask. “Is it being suggested that we wear only loose fitting, shapeless attire resembling a sack of spuds?” Well, no. If you wear ‘slumpy’ clothes, you enter a ‘slumpy’ mindset – whatever one of those is. We would immediately slouch. We would stop standing up straight. We would be in a heap. The answer is to wear formal wear. A nice pair of trousers – perhaps without a belt – a possible risk? With a shirt tucked in to make you self-conscious. I have given a lot of thought to this and my conclusion. If it comes to such minutiae then the world has finally gone mad. Surely Lycra or no Lycra your muscles are not that dense. I am standing by my Lycra. It has harmed no one and I am going to be outrageously rebellious and continue to wear my compression clothing too. Lycra, I continue to support you. CYCLING

Scratch and

CYCLING TIPS AND ADVICE FROM SPORT EDITOR GARY DICKSON

W

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE MAY MESS UP THE REST OF YOUR DAY!

hat is “Scratch & Dent”? This a term used in the bike trade to describe bikes that don’t perfectly fit into the “100% perfect” category. For one reason or another the wholesaler can’t sell the bike at full price. There are a number of possible reasons for this:-

Now, you have probably been thinking “I’ve never seen “Scratch & Dent” at my local bike shop. Not surprising, they rarely come up, and when they do they must get past hawk eyed bike shop employees before making it into the public domain. Bikes at HALF PRICE or less get snapped up quickly.

1. Ex-demo bike 2. Return from a shop that’s gone belly up 3. Negligible damage in transit 4. Outdated model 5. Small cosmetic mark

Just as I was thinking up what to write for this issue of Village-Link Scotby Cycles was given first refusal on ALL “Scratch & Dent” bikes from one big wholesaler. By the time you read this they will be reaching our showroom. This will not be widely advertised because news spreads fast!

The term “Scratch & Dent” sounds like there is going to be significant issues, but remember this a crude, cover all, “trade term” not designed for the delicate ears of the general public. Now let me explain what these “Scratch & Dent” bikes are really like. The bottom line is, you will be hard pushed to tell the difference from a new bike. They carry a Full Manufacturer’s Warranty (except for cosmetic issues) so there are no added risks.

Now you know why this article may mess up your day! Scotby Cycles, Church St (opp. McVities), Caldewgate, Carlisle Tel: 01228 546931

BUSINESS NEWS

THE TROUBLE WITH

banks

2014 will go down in history for unprecedented fines levied on UK banks by the watchdog regulator the Financial Conduct Authority. Tony Butterworth [Butterworths Solicitors] investigates These issues are coming at an extremely bad time for many business owners; farmers are facing low milk prices that threaten their livelihood, care home owners are negotiating their way through the new social care regime, and property developers are grappling with higher survey fees and changes in stamp duty.

hilst these fines are a fraction of the actual money that the banks set aside to make redress payments to customers, they do show that the watchdog is baring its teeth at last.

W

The long-running saga of PPI claims continues, albeit at a reduced pace, where the banks have collectively now paid out over £25 billion to customers affected. The banks have also repaid almost £2 billion relating to the miss-sale of interest rate hedging products.

FARMERS ARE FACING LOW MILK PRICES THAT THREATEN THEIR LIVELIHOOD

increased, and the appetite to lend is still more restricted. Despite assurances to the contrary, banks still appear reluctant to go that extra mile to help business customers, and in many sectors of the economy, in particular farming, care

As the economy continues to pick up however, the banks are still acting as a drag on many small and medium sized enterprises. Not only are they lending less, lending margins have

homes and property development being a few, the banks are if anything making life even more difficult than it ought to be. In addition to the sale of products that didn’t suit customers, businesses have been faced with very large exit fees and break costs when repaying loans, with the imposition of higher margins on existing loan agreements, of reneged loan commitments, and sudden suspension of overdraft facilities.

With the upcoming election in May, the current government’s various business ministers are banging the drum of recovery and growth, but the level of disputes with the banks continues to grow, and as yet, despite the rhetoric, the banks don’t appear to have really turned over a new leaf. As a result Butterworths Specialist Banking Team is busier than ever trying to help affected local businesses.

Wooden Floors: How to make them last longer than you

maintaining your

hard wood floor with local business

S

‘Euroak’

ustainability is the new god. Wood, we are told, is the perfect sustainable material. It grows, we use it, so we grow some more. Unfortunately, hardwood grows at one speed – slowly, so we should use it slowly. With wooden floors, we can do just that. Undemanding and robust, all they ask for is a bit of hoovering and cleaning when required. For a start, use a proper wood floor cleaner, not detergent or scourer and

definitely not a steam cleaner. Use a decent mop or better still, a buffer. What you do is break up the grime with the right cleaning agent and remove it with the mop, rather than just spread it around. Hardwax oil is steadily becoming the finish of choice for domestic floors. Modern oils are natural looking, hard wearing and easy to look after. The bonus is, you should never need to sand and re-finish it. Just vacuum, clean it when needed, and give it a coat of maintenance oil occasionally. High traffic areas can be re-oiled without sanding as long as it’s not worn to the wood. Lacquer is different. It is a “hard” finish and will last ages in domestic situations. Lacquer sits on top of the wood as an impervious film. Again, regular vacuuming and cleaning with the correct product will keep it in good shape. At some point, you may have to sand and re-finish it. All very well for flat floors. Many modern floors are textured, contoured,

distressed or made from reclaimed materials. These need to be maintained, sanding is not the best option. You may have an old original wooden floor, with real age and patina. Sanding this back to bare wood will remove years of character. Deep cleaning techniques can restore antique floors and revive textured ones without sanding. Wood floors expect to have a hard life, they will last a long time but will look new only once - after that, they will only look better. Spare a thought for my Nana who had this recipe for polishing her floor – 25 parts of shredded yellow wax, make up into a hot solution with 12 parts of pearl ash in soft water. Keep well stirred till effervescence ceases. Remove from fire and stir in 12 parts of finely ground yellow ochre. When using, add 5 parts boiling water and paint on. When cool polish with cloth to a shine. Whilst we’re talking of maintaining your lovely floors - Euroak supply a range of maintenance products for wood floors.
