J
Welcome
ust before we entered our friends 'sparkly brand-new' barn conversion, I dutifully gave the fatherly lecture, “Kids, you'd better be on your best behaviour, remember your manners, don’t be charging round the place and most important of all – don’t touch anything or make any mess!” As expected, all walls were a bright shade of Farrow and Ball’s ‘Elephant’s Pigeon’ (or similar), contrasting the wooden beams in the ceiling. The smell of new carpets and food wafting from the kitchen was all very welcoming. Soon the house was buzzing with laughter and chatter as more guests arrived. Our hosts were serving the food ‘buffet-style’, and within seconds of the ‘foods ready’ announcement, a dutiful queue was formed. At the end of the table of delicacies, was a huge pan of chilli, perfect for a freezing cold night. To get the chilli from the pan you used the ladle provided. One lovely delicious scoop of chilli was neatly placed on top of some rice. But in the blink of an eye, what happened next can only be described as ‘total devastation’. Being middle-aged, I was wearing a cardigan, which had pockets. Reaching over the chilli to get a tasty bread roll, the handle of the ladle had managed to get hooked onto my cardigan pocket. As I walked away, the ladle – full with chilli – lifted out of the pan, flipped upwards and sideways, literally splattering the ceiling, walls, and carpet with chilli. Not realising yet I was the reason for the biblical intake of breath from all guests, I turned the other way to see what the fuss was about, only to watch the ‘now released from pocket’ ladle go hurtling across the dining room. My kids watched on agog! Fortunately there was a defibrillator nearby for my wife, and miraculously, the initial stunned silence from the hosts, turned into raucous laughter. The moral of the story? Cardigan’s are not as innocent as they look. Congratulations to Mia aged 6 who found all the Winston’s from the last issue, and to Isabelle who rescued Bear from Armathwaite. Welcome to 2020!

CARLISLE’S PAST
HISTORY
A LOCAL HERO - Thomas TelforD
Metal Bridge from the north
Thomas Telford
Section of Bridge preserved at Tullie House
homas Telford was a Scottish civil engineer, architect, stonemason, and road, bridge and canal builder born in Glendinning (near Langholm) in Eskdale in 1857. His father died in Thomas’ infancy, plunging the family into poverty. However, Thomas was apprenticed to a stonemason in Langholm which led to a life of bridge design and building over almost eight decades which changed the face of Georgian Britain. Locally, in 1808, he drew up a plan and elevation of a Bridge to be erected over the River Esk at ‘Gariston,’ Garriestown. This original plan was for a stone bridge of five arches, almost identical to the one previously
built at Longtown by Robert Graham of Netherby in 1755/56. In 1809 and 1819 he surveyed the Carlisle Canal, the original scheme being for a canal from the Tyne to the Solway. William Chapman, Jessop and Telford advised at different times until, in 1819, the Carlisle Ship Canal was built by William Chapman from Carlisle to Fishers’ Cross, later named Port Carlisle. During the same period, Thomas Telford planned the construction of the Sark Bridge at Gretna then, in 1820, he constructed the Metal Bridge over the Esk. A section of the original bridge can still be seen in the grounds of Tullie House Museum in Carlisle. Thomas Telford was arguably the greatest builder of roads, bridges and canals Britain has ever seen.
He was the Founder and first President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Telford had a great affection for his birthplace of Eskdale and its people. In his will he left legacies to the two local libraries at Westerkirk and Langholm. Gordon Routledge’s latest book ‘A History of Longtown – Volume 1’ contains much more about the people and the early history of transport in the area, the fords, ferries and bridges that aided the development of the village in the 18th and 19th century. It is available on my website www.p3publications.com

FOOD
Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
was rather pleased last year when the fashion of the season was wearing ankle boots with no tights. The reason being is that I absolutely hate wearing tights. However, when the temperatures started to drop below zero I had to succumb to wearing the dreaded tights for fear of looking ridiculous as people started to say, ‘Are you not freezing?’. I do, however, prefer winter clothes to summer clothes. Having said that, there is one winter item that I find rather daunting, and that is knee high boots. In fact I would go as far as to say I have knee boot envy, or rather, boot-gap envy. Now there are those of you reading this who won’t understand what on earth I’m on about, but I am sure there are many of you who will. What a mean by boot-gap is a noticeable space at the top of the boot. Now I wouldn’t say my calves are massive, but in the knee boot world they obviously are. There is nothing more embarrassing than going into a shop and trying on a pair of knee high boots that won’t zip up, or when you do get the
zip up, it cuts off all your circulation and gives you a ‘boot-bulge’. Not an attractive look. I did once manage to purchase a pair of knee high boots, but in all honestly I found them exhausting, so hardly wore them.
So I think it best that I stop trying to change and stick with my ankle boots, and as soon as the temperature starts to rise will ditch the tights and hope the bare leg look stays in vogue for years to come! Well we made it to January so spring is in sight. Snow drops start to appear which is always a good sign and gives us a measure of hope. January though can be a long month and we still tend to hibernate and long for comfort food. I came across this pudding recipe recently which is both delicious and comforting.
It is called ‘Sticky Toffee Apple Pudding’ by Emma Lewis. Start by heating your oven to 180°C, 160° Fan, or Gas 4 and grease a 2 litre ovenproof dish. Tip 140g SR flour, 100g golden caster sugar and 1tbsp baking powder into a bowl. In a separate jug, mix 200ml milk, 85g melted butter, 1 beaten egg and a 1tsp vanilla essence and then add this to the dry ingredients and stir until you get a smooth batter. Next, peel core and slice 2 Bramley apples and put these in the bottom of the prepared dish and then spoon the batter mixture on top. For the topping pour 250ml boiling water over 140g dark brown sugar and stir until smooth. Pour this over the pudding mixture and then scatter over the top 50g roughly chopped pecan nuts. Bake for about 40 minutes until risen and golden. Serve with cream, ice cream or custard, whatever takes your fancy. Jane ferguson

Find new friends in unlikely places
uide Dogs offers other forms of companionships, other than its well-known four-legged furry kind. Guide Dogs’ My Guide service pairs sighted volunteers with those who are visually impaired, helping them with simple everyday tasks such as going to the shops, to the theatre or simply out for a walk. Amanda Bennett, My Guide Operations Manager in the North West, said: “My Guide is one of our fantastic services to help our service users be more mobile and more independent. “We partner a service user with a sighted volunteer who have similar interests, and they meet up for an hour or two a week (or more if they want!) and do whichever social, leisure or fitness activity they choose.
“We’ve had some incredible success stories over the years, and some amazing friendships have blossomed. We’re always encouraging more volunteers to get involved in our My Guide service, as it really is a fantastic way to get involved and see first-hand the difference they are making”. Rik was partnered with Louise earlier this year, and their partnership is inspiring and not to mention, fun!
Rik said: “I decided to apply for a My Guide, I had read about the service and decided that I would go for it. My guide turned out to be Louise, who I clicked with as soon as we started chatting and I felt like I had always known her. “What I like about Louise is she doesn’t treat me different, she sees me before my disability. “It’s her first time doing this, but she is fantastic at it and puts me at ease straight away. Thank you, Guide Dogs. I’m sure there is lots more fun times to be had with my Guide and friend Louise”. Rik and Louise won the My Guide Partnership Award at Guide Dogs’ annual People Awards last month. Find out more about all of Guide Dogs’ services online www.guidedogs.org.uk

NEW denture clinic

SPOTLIGHT ON ROBERT TAGGARTS’S NEW DENTURE CLINIC IN CARLISLE
ob Taggart has been a Dental Technician for over 37 years. He set up the laboratory with his wife, Sandra, in 2003, and they have gone through many changes over the years. Now located on Rosehill Industrial Estate, Carlisle, there is a modern, open-plan Dental Laboratory and a new Denture Clinic, opened in 2018. All technicians are GDC registered and have undergone extensive training, the laboratory has DAMAS accreditation and is registered with the Dental Laboratory Association and British Bite Mark. In August 2018, Rob gained a Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh following two years’ study at UCLAN, Preston.
Working from the newly equipped Denture Clinic, Rob can use his technical experience and newly gained clinical qualification to provide Quality Bespoke Dentures direct to the public. As a Clinical Dental Technician, he can provide full dentures direct to the public, working on prescription from a dentist when remaining teeth are still present, as stated in the GDC’s Scope of Practice.

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public
“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M
Rob Taggart comments: “Although we have many years of experience between us, we continue to develop our skills, attending courses on a regular basis. This allows us to keep up to date with new trends and the latest technology. We are fortunate to have the use of a training room on site, ideal for seminars for all Dentists and DCPs alike, and have had great success with previous events. We have three drivers collecting work daily throughout Cumbria and South West Scotland, and we also provide freepost labels for those practices further afield. You can find lab sheets and freepost labels in the Download section of our website and if you are interested in any of our services or future seminars, just call for more information”.

TRAVEL GUIDE
I
TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK SHARES TRAVEL IDEAS FOR THE COMING MONTHS
’m sure many of you will be getting very excited and thinking about your upcoming winter sports holiday. If you are heading off to the slopes, I’m sure you’ve been delighted with the amount of snow that has fallen in the run up to Christmas. The Alps have had one of the best starts to the winter season. In my early days of working in the travel industry, I was lucky enough to spend 10 winters repping and guiding in various ski resorts, from Val Thorens and Meribel in the wonderful Trois Vallees area in France, to cowboy town Jackson Hole in Wyoming, then the powder heaven of Vail Colorado before returning to the Austrian party resort of Ischgl and finishing in quieter Ellmau in the Tirol – each was attractive for different reasons. Choosing a resort for a winter sports holiday can be a minefield unless you know what you’re looking for. If you’re a regular visitor to the snowy landscapes, you might have your favourites, but when you want to go somewhere different, or when you’re new to this, where do you go? Here are some things to consider when thinking about a destination: What level of skier are you? Do you want to be in a large ski area, or are you happy with a smaller resort? Will you need ski lessons, or do you want to ski with a group of people rather than just your other half or friend? Are
Top tips to make sure your ski holiday goes as smoothly as possible you taking young children, or is a non-skier coming with you? Do you want to be in a purpose- built resort or a more traditional village? Ski in/ski-out, or are you happy with a short walk, or a bus ride to get to the nearest lift? What accommodation do you want – self catering, hotel, or catered chalet where you’ll get a cooked breakfast, delicious cake when you come back from your skiing and usually a 3 or 4 course evening meal with included wine? If you opt for the latter, then the chalet staff will have one night off leaving you to try one of the local restaurants. Is Apres-ski important or not? Once you’ve got all that sorted, and you’ve booked your ski holiday, what next? You need to get ready for this adventure. If it’s your first time on a skiing holiday, you’re probably excited to get to the beautiful mountainous surroundings of your ski resort.

There’s no feeling like heading out on the slopes to experience the thrill of the wind whirling past you as you glide across the powdery white snow. Skiing is an extreme sport, however, so before you go, check out my top tips to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. • Invest in good ski gear • Build up your fitness before you go – ideal exercises are sitting against the wall at right angles, and walking up and down the stairs a lot. • Take a waterproof backpack • Dress in layers. As your mum always used to tell you: “make sure you layer up when it’s cold outside” - and it’s no different with skiing. • Think about taking some ski lessons before you go • Warm up and warm down before and after your ski day • Don’t ski alone • Don’t overdo it on your first time • You will fall, so try to do it properly • Enjoy the apres-ski! There are still plenty of great offers to be had this season, so get in touch if you need some advice, and I’ll be happy to recommend the best resort, and operator for you, or why not register your interest for next season and I’ll let you know as soon as winter 20/21 is on sale. Happy skiing!

n the last issue, I introduced you to the natural healing methods of Dr. Edward Bach using the Bach Flower Remedies, which are completely safe and harmless. It might surprise you to know that animals can also be treated with appropriate flower essences too. They have feelings, just like humans, and can therefore suffer with a wide range of emotional problems, often coping with emotions such as loneliness, fear, anxiety and vexation. A certain amount of ‘wild behaviour’ is normal. However, the owner will notice what is out of balance for their particular animal. Animals are good subjects and respond very quickly to flower essesence treatment. Why is that you might ask? The simple answer is that they do not put up defences as perhaps humans do, at some level. The Bach approach can rapidly bring their systems into equilibrium. Even better news is that there is no need to bring your pet to the practitioner. Just you and the practitioner, with a short appointment of about 15 mins should suffice to take home the appropriate remedy for your pet. Next issue will hold a short sequel on Emergency Treatment. Contact Sandra, in complete confidence on 01768 896191 to arrange your consultation.
HOW DO BACH FLOWER REMEDIES WORK? Bach flower essences have the ability to change a negative emotion into a positive one. For instance, a person with a low self-esteem will, after taking specific flower essences, start to believe in him or herself again and will be more confident dealing with the day-to-day things. Negative emotions are not suppressed but turned into the opposite, positive emotional state. For example, fear of failure into self-confidence, or impatience into calmness and tranquility.

GENUINE OR NOT? from LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] proud to be part of the arboricultural association
A
nyone can call themselves a tree surgeon (arborist), place an advert in Yellow Pages and offer a service. But an advert does not guarantee quality of work or that it will be carried out safely. That is why you should always use an ARB Approved Contractor. Aboriculture requires a high degree of technical competence which must be supported by training and experience. For these reasons, tree work should only be undertaken by well trained, competent arborists experienced at the type of work being done such as tree pruning or tree removal. Tree work that has not been carried out properly can cause serious harm to your trees that have taken many years to grow. It is hard for an untrained trimmer to know where to make cuts as well as how to make them.
You may conclude that this is a job best left to the professionals Common mistakes include cutting branches off the tops of the tree (topping), trimming the ends off the ends of the branches (tipping), and cutting a disproportionate number of branches from one area of the tree. All these can cause trees to look awkward, and sometimes it can take a long time to outgrow the effects of a bad trim! Correct pruning cuts are made just beyond the branch collar at the point of attachment. The tree is biologically equipped to close such a wound, provided the tree is healthy enough and the wound is not too large. Cuts made along

a limb between lateral branches create stubs with wounds that the tree may not be able to close. The exposed wood tissues begin to decay. Normally, a tree will “wall off,” or compartmentalize, the decaying tissues, but few trees can defend the multiple severe wounds caused by topping. The decay organisms are given a free path to move down through the branches. In addition to the long-term effects of improper tree trimming, there are also some immediate dangers. When trimming large branches, you may accidentally drop a branch onto nearby property. Branches are heavy and when falling from any height, they can cause quite significant damage. You may be liable for this damage if a third party is affected. Even more destructive than property damage is the potential personal damage that can occur. Trimming trees is not without risk to the trimmer. Falling branches as well as accidental injury from trimming tools (such as chainsaws) are the most common causes of damage. These kinds of injuries can be serious and even fatal. As you consider the harm that can result from improperly trimming trees, you may come to the conclusion that this is a job that is best left to the professionals. Our tree technicians and arborists know the best techniques to quickly and safely trim your trees. We will trim your trees properly in order to leave them stronger, healthier, and more beautiful than before, and most important of all we are proud to be part of the arboricultural association.

new clinic opened by the award-winning Paragon Veterinary Group at Wetheral is providing local pet owners with high quality expertise on the doorstep. Paragon, which has recently invested £300,000 in a state-ofthe-art hospital at its Dalston HQ, opened a satellite branch at Oak Tree Farm in October. It offers locals the chance to have their pets cared for by the same team of vets and veterinary nurses who work at Paragon’s main Dalston and Newbiggin centres – but without the journey. ‘We can provide any sort of consultation at Oak Tree,’ says small animal vet Graham Lewis. ‘We are running a standard branch, we just don’t do operations here.
Graham Lewis at the opening of Paragon Oak Tree branch.
‘If it was anything that needed hospitalisation we would take the animal across to Dalston, which we can do in the veterinary ambulance if necessary.’ He added: ‘It’s the same team, so you can get continuity with the same vet.’ Paragon’s Oak Tree branch is based on the same site as Oak Tree Animals’ Charity and took
part in the charity’s Christmas Fair. ‘We think the charity does great work here and we are trying to support them with that,’ says Graham. ‘If anyone wants to come along and see us or wants a tour of our hospital facilities in Dalston we would welcome the chance to show them. ‘And if people are going to visit the charity’s tearoom or shop, we would be very happy for them to drop in and see us as well, to find out more about what we offer.’ Paragon’s Oak Tree branch is open for consultations Monday to Friday 10am to 11.30am and 3pm to 4pm. MOBILE CAR CARE SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS ‘DH VALETING’

ver since I can remember I have been crazy about cars. Ever since owning them, I’ve been crazy about keeping them looking their best! Having previously worked with exotic cars in events coordination and owning a few sporty numbers myself, I decided to put my enthusiasm to use and establish DH Valeting in 2019. Ever since I launched the business my phone hasn’t stopped ringing, proving me right that there’s a definite need for mobile car care in the area. As much as customers within the city are important to me, it’s the surrounding villages where I target my trade. Not only because car cleaning is needed far more greatly but because my customers have driveways to work on away from the busy roads – making it

New Legislation For Landlords
SURVEY EXPERTS BIRLEY STEELE LIGHTFOOT EXPLAIN new ENERGY EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS
F
rom the 1st April 2020 MEES (Minimum energy efficiency standards) will affect all private rented property in England and Wales, except social housing. Currently the regulations require that all new lettings of properties should achieve a Band E EPC rating. From the 1st April 2020 this will apply to existing private rented property not just new lettings. Furnished holiday homes and bedsits are excluded, but listed buildings are no longer exempt and agricultural tenancies are also included.
Penalties for non-compliance range from £1,000 to £5,000. The new law reflects the governments intentions to improve the housing stock for tenants. Improvements likely to achieve a better EPC rating include: 1) Low energy lighting 2) Roof insulation 3) Cavity wall insulation 4) Modern heating systems (e.g. condensing gas boiler) The landlord has to improve the property at their own expense. If they can show that they have spent £3,500 and still cannot achieve an ‘E’ rating, they can apply for an exemption. An EPC is valid for 10 years.
BSL Chartered Surveyors are accredited providers of EPC’s and can advise landlords on these issues. Privately rented commercial properties are also affected. New tenancies are required to achieve a Band E rating, but from the 1st April 2023 this will apply to existing tenancies.

FELLWALKING ENTHUSIAST STEPHEN ROBSON REFLECTS ON A LABOUR OF LOVE WHICH TOOK FORTY YEARS TO ACHIEVE – COMPLETING ALL 214 WAINWRIGHT FELLS
have a small confession to make. After years of reading the declaration that I have completed all the Wainwright’s, it is only this year, in July in fact, that I actually have. Let me explain further. In June 2014 I finished all of the Southern Fells. I climbed Lingmoor Fell, Black Fell and Holme Fell, all in one day. On Lingmoor Fell, I met a man from West Cumbria, who had almost completed the Wainwright’s a total of seven times! That puts my “achievement” in perspective, doesn’t it? Black Fell near Skelwith Bridge soon became my least favourite fell in the Lake District. This could have been down to the route I selected, but there was no clear path, high mossy walls topped off with wire, tangled tree roots and boulders among the bracken. Getting to the summit was like wading through a jungle! Eventually I stood by a large cairn, taking in a fairly decent view. On the descent I lost my prescription sunglasses.

I met a man from West Cumbria, who had almost completed the Wainwright’s seven times! I returned in late October of that year, on a gloomy day that spoilt all photo opportunities, despite the Autumn colours being at their height. I was determined to find my variofocal shades! I took two sticks with me to aid my search, rustling about in the fallen leaves. I must have presented a very odd picture. It was as though I was working for a forensic team! All to no avail. What a twit I was, expecting to locate them after four months. It was a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. I didn’t go to the summit, as a video I made at that time proved I had lost them on the lower slopes. That “You Tube” video later caused a correspondent to write in, telling me I hadn’t actually attained the true summit, I had surmounted Ivy Crag, a subsidiary top. This caused me considerable annoyance. I would have to go
Excellent value for money with high exposure
back up there yet again! On another occasion I shall tell you about my conquest of Helm Crag. I finally made it to the top of the Howitzer last summer, with the help of Lake District guide and mountaineer David PowellThompson. And a rope. Two of my fellwalking buddies had taken to calling me “The False One” as I hadn’t reached the top of the Lion Couchant, which needled me until I actually did so. So, having finally surmounted the topmost rocks of the Lion and the Lamb- which Alfred Wainwright never achieved- and feeling rather pleased with myself -I set off to locate the true summit of Black Fell. I resolved I would not return home until I had done so. There was plenty of daylight as it was mid-July. The starting point was close enough to my original route, except I took a diagonal line across a field – avoiding the barricading walls - aiming for the highest ground I could see. . There were black clouds massing over the Coniston Mountains, but I was determined to complete my quest. If it rained, it rained. It was only water, after all. This would be the day I would complete the Wainwright’s. No longer the false one. I arrived at the skyline. There, as before, the imposing cairn and the view of Windermere. But absolutely no sign of the ordinance survey column marking the highest point. I shouted a rude word in complete frustration. Nobody heard. I set off, due South across a huge depression, climbing upwards, crossed a wooden stile, and eventually located the summit. The rain began, but I didn’t care. Victory was mine! 25
