ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

S

o there I was the other day, on a walk with my wife, merrily chatting away - only I realised that I was suddenly alone. Having turned around, I see my wife crouched down taking a picture of a leaf. Only this was no ordinary leaf - you see to her, it had a smily face on it. Now I’m aware that her mental state isn’t what it used to be, having been married to me for the past twenty two years, but I mean - really? And this wasn’t an isolated case - she’s done this for years, but it turns out she’s not alone. It’s actually quite common for people to see faces in things - and it’s even got a name - “Pareidolia”. It seems we are surrounded by people who can’t stare at the sky without imagining a fluffy bunny floating by or look at a piece of wood without thinking they see a face grinning out of the grain. A Japanese study presented this month at the annual “Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness” meeting in Paris, examined some of the personality traits and emotional states that enhance someone’s likelihood of seeing a face in a random object, finding that neuroticism and a positive mood were related with this tendency. The phenomenon of seeing patterns in randomness is fairly common and researchers have found that women see faces in things more than men do, and said that the difference may be related to women’s greater interest in social information,

and their superior ability to decode emotions from facial expressions. I can’t argue with that as I’m always getting in bother when I don’t respond to “the look”. So Pareidolia - it’s a real thing I’m just off out now to wave at the man on the moon! Busy issue last month for competitions – so here are all the Winners; Mr Wrightson who won the Crossword Competition, Lizzie (age 8) who found all the Winston Bears hidden throughout the issue and Trudi who rescued Bear from Aglionby. Just also want to say a huge thank you to all our advertisers, distributors and to all you readers for your support this year, looking forward to 2019!

HISTORY

Carlisle’s Past SILLOTH - The Happy Valley and Her Majesty’s Theatre, Carlisle

David Fuller’s Pierrots

O

ne summer evening in 1901, three figures in pierrot costume wheeled a piano across Silloth green; they did not realise that they were establishing one of the town’s ‘Institutions’. Several locals gathered to hear the performance, near the bank at the north end of the green which formed a natural auditorium. Three men, David Fuller, George Worthington and Arthur Court, entertained them with song, music and humour.

The audience must have been impressed, because these entertainers were to give many more performances. The site between a pine tree enclosure and North House became their home and was known as the Happy Valley. With swings and a seesaw nearby and chairs for the audience, the place became popular with the crowds who came to Silloth. By 1908, there were nine in the troupe, still led by David Fuller, and a covered stage had been built with a changing room at the back. The troupe became the subject of many picture postcards, making them quite famous. During the early years of World War 1, things carried on much as normal. At Silloth, the Pierrots continued to perform and were joined by another concert party. A.C. Astor’s Coronets performed in a specially constructed enclosure further along the sea front. A.C. Astor was the stage name of Thomas Ferguson. He was born in Carlisle, but moved to Silloth with his family when his father set up there as a plumber. He joined David Fuller’s troupe but soon left to start what proved to be a very successful

show business career. He ran concert parties in several resorts, performed as a ventriloquist on the music halls and finally, became proprietor of Her Majesty’s Theatre in Carlisle. There is much more about the history of Silloth in the book ‘A Century Around Silloth’ available at Bookends, Tullie House, or online from the publisher at P3 Publications www.p3publications.com

Easy Italian Risotto

FOOD

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

y husband and I recently moved house and to say it was stressful is an understatement but that is a whole other story! The house we have moved in to is a ‘doer upper’, so at present we are living in a building site. I am trying to view it as ‘glamping! Not easy I can tell you. I do have use of a kitchen (for now) which is quite basic, no mod cons like a dish washer or anything like that, but that is fine. Now this might come as a surprise to many, but one thing I have discovered is that I am actually enjoying washing up the old fashioned way, by hand. I get great satisfaction in filling the washing up bowl with hot soapy water and giving my pots and pans a good old scrub. It’s also quite sociable if there are two of you, one to wash the other to dry, rather than just filling a dish washer up and then settling in front of the TV for the night. But by far the best thing about it is that there is no dish washer to empty first thing in the morning, which in my reckoning is a real bonus. Having said all that, you may be wondering whether I will be getting a dish washer in my new kitchen when it is fitted, and the answer is yes. A contradiction I know, but then again I am a woman!

Whilst having to make do with a limited kitchen for a while, I have to be quite savvy when it comes to meals. Most of the meals I make at the moment have to be cooked on a stove top and one of my favourite things to make is risotto. Here is a recipe for a ‘Courgette and Lemon Risotto’. To begin with dissolve 1 vegetable stock cube with 1 litre of boiling water. Grate 250g courgettes and one chopped onion separately. Now melt 50g butter in a pan and gently fry the chopped onion for about 8 minutes. Add 1 crushed garlic clove and stir for a further minute. Stir in 180g risotto rice. Add one ladle of the stock to the rice mixture with the juice of 1 lemon and 2 lemon thyme sprigs. Bubble over a medium heat and stir regularly. When most of the liquid has been dissolved, add another ladle of stock and stir regularly.

Now add the courgettes and keep adding the stock stirring now and then until the rice is tender and creamy. Serve with grated parmesan, lemon zest, black pepper and some warm crusty bread. Enjoy. Oh, and don’t forget the washing up after!

ZUCCHINI Vs COURGETTE

The term Zucchini has an Italian origin while courgette is relatively French. Zucchini is used by those people who speak North American and Australian English whereas courgette is used by those who speak French, British, New Zealand and South African English. Zucchini and courgette are the same plant veggies but are used to refer to that same plant, which is growing across its different stages of plant development. The courgette is smaller and estimated to be about 14 x 4 cm long whereas the zucchini is bigger, which is estimated to grow as big as 15-20 cm.

PEARL OF WISDOM Before Daniel Craig’s 007 made the switch to Omega (after Roger Moore’s Casio years of the 70s) the Rolex Submariner made an appearance in eleven Bond films. It was also the superspy’s watch of choice in Fleming’s original novels. The same magic worked by the Bond franchise on Aston Martin did more for Rolex than any slick advertising campaign could ever have achieved. In the 1960s it just wasn’t possible to be cooler than Sean Connery, and Sean Connery wore a Submariner.

A compelling insight into the life of a unique man, who quite literally changed Carlisle for ever. He was put in charge of the citys housing programme in 1919, he designed five bridges carrying traffic into Carlisle, he erected the Turkish Baths on James Street and extended the electricity works there, and was responsible for many more innovative designs in the city of which many are still in place today.

ercy Dalton has been one of the unsung heroes of Carlisle. Yet his work is to be found everywhere throughout the city. The gardens on Stanwix Bank are his as is the widened Eden Bridges and other bridges in the city. Percy Dalton’s name is commemorated in the name of Dalton Avenue in Raffles and anyone with a careful and curious eye will find his name on numerous plaques throughout the city. Underneath the name of the mayor and the weighty names of committee members who made the decision will be the inscription ‘P. DALTON, A.M.INST.C.E.A.R.I.B.A. CITY ENGINEER’; the name of the man responsible for the design and construction. Dalton led the way in the civic development of Hammond’s Pond and Heysham Park in Raffles. He built the fine old people’s houses in Margaret Creighton Gardens with their strong community feel, and he constructed the impressive hundreda copy of room changin g the fa police ce of carli sle station in See pag e 22 Rickergate.

Adventures I

Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.

n the West of the district stands the impressively titled Pillar, the name conjuring up images of vertical rock and heady views from a spire high in the sky. Slightly disappointing then, that the mountain itself is a massive rounded lump from many angles, particularly when viewed from Wasdale Head; possibly the most uninspiring peak in the vicinity. Fear not however, except if you are scared of heights of course, for it is not all bland and nonedescript, on the Northern face sits the feature that gives the fell its name- a six hundred foot tall crag with a vertical face, sides and even a foreshortened back wall that connects it to the parent fell behind. This is Pillar rock, the tallest mass of vertical crag in England, first climbed by a local shepherd in 1828. You can climb Pillar from Wasdale and only spy the top of the rock from the summit - if you go looking for it. Far better to go the way we did, via Black Sail pass, then following the high level route across the face of the mountain that overlooks the Ennerdale Valley. Wasdale Head is a long way from Carlisle, we had a 150 mile round trip that day. My pal Julian completed his Wainwright tally some years before on Yewbarrow, a near neighbour of Pillar. His Spaniel Star refused to ride in the far back of the car and insisted on sitting on my knee all the way there. I was very relieved to get out and start walking! Back to Pillar though, the high level route leads to Robinson’s cairn, which has a wonderful view of the rock up ahead, with the tilted Shamrock Traverse climbing its left hand flank. The Shamrock is a separate piece of crag to the rock itself, which sits immediately behind it, hence it is

a shamrock, literally. The cairn is very impressively built and sited but unfortunately for us was swarming with midges that nearly ate us alive. You might think I’m exaggerating but I’m not, my arms were covered in lumps. I had repellent in my rucksack, stupidly I didn’t remember until much later. There is a final steep climb up to the summit itself, which is 2927 feet tall (or 892 metres if you prefer) and is totally flat but with terrific views out in every direction. All that remains to do then is to follow the east ridge back to Black Sail and then to descend vIa Gatherstone beck down to Wasdale Head. The first time I climbed Pillar (I have only done so twice) was in 1977. I was a lad of 19 and overflowing with youthful vigour. Just as well too; the route i took was extremely arduous - I climbed to Scarth Gap Pass from Buttermere, then descended into the Ennerdale Valley and crossed the River Liza before making a beeline for the rock itself, towering over Pillar Cove ahead. So, in other words, I climbed one mountain range and descended from it, before setting foot on Pillar itself! Needless to say, I had to reverse the whole process to get back to my starting point, at the end of a very long day. The mountain always looks very impressive on the way home, seen when driving past the foot of Ennerdale, with the rock prominent on its left hand side. It is also very close to the High Stile range and of course conspicuously in view from Haystacks, over which, as Wainwright famously noted “Pillar and Gable keep unfailing watch”, an inspiring backdrop to Innominate Tarn, his final resting place. www.village-link.co.uk

Tree Care

A

local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS

utumn is a key time to prepare trees for the upcoming winter and following spring. It is important to reach out to a professional arborist at this time to tend to trees within your home. An arborist can proactively treat trees, taking steps now that will help keep your trees and shrubs healthy, safe, and beautiful in the months to come. Preventative and remedial treatments administered in autumn boost trees’ stamina during the winter and create a positive growing environment in the spring. From the ground up to the top of the tree, here are some important recommendations: 1. Identify and manage overwintering pest populations. Early detection of pests and diseases combined with targeted treatments reduces environmental stresses on your plants and protects your landscape investment.

2. Fertilise plantings to encourage root development. Tree and shrub roots usually grow during the fall. Root systems store reserves of starch that will become active energy in the spring when shoot growth, leafing and flowering occur. Fertilisation during this time will maintain soil nutrient levels and increase root production, promoting new growth in the spring. 3. Prune dead, broken and interfering branches. It’s advantageous to schedule pruning tasks after leaves have fallen so that the

silhouettes of trees and deciduous shrubs can be seen. Any dead, broken and interfering branches can be removed and vista pruning can be performed. A skilled arborist should make the pruning decisions and cuts. 4. Check for structural weaknesses in branch junctions and install cables or braces if necessary. As with pruning, the advantage of cabling and bracing trees in fall and winter is having a view that’s unobstructed by foliage. Structural defects are more apparent and it’s easier to judge distances, cable tension and angles. 5. Perform cultural practices. Replenish mulch to give root systems an extra layer of warmth, wrap evergreens to prevent animal damage and keep deicing salts away from plantings. 6. Assess your landscape needs and establish next season’s landscape goals. Proactive care not only protects your trees, it also saves you inconvenience and the potential of expensive replacement costs later on.

“And audiences don’t need to be climbers themselves to enjoy the show – it appeals to anyone with a spirit of adventure.” The Reel Rock Film Tour is now in its 13th year, and 2018 is the seventh time it has visited the UK and Ireland.

For tickets and to watch the fantastic trailer,

see www.reelrock.co.uk

Highlights of the 2018 film selection include: • Queen Maud Land A dream team of six elite climbers mount an expedition to one of the world’s last great climbing frontiers: the remote frozen towers of Antarctica. Queen Maud Land, the name of this icy region, showcases a stunning, rarely visited wilderness, and the suffering and vision needed to climb at the bottom of the world.

As well as four thrilling films, each screening will see a free prize giveaway to win adventure goodies.

he International Reel Rock Film Tour is returning to the UK this November, bringing a brand-new collection of climbing and adventure films to venues around the country. The Tour will premier four new films starring climbing icons as they attempt to achieve their lifelong ambitions in far-flung locations, from icy Antarctica to the Bedouin canyonlands of the Middle East. And with climbing announced as a new sport for the 2020 Olympics, the film Up to Speed delves into the exhilarating discipline of speed climbing.

Is it crazy how saying sentences backwards... ...creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is? A man with authority walks into a bar... ...and orders everyone a round.

ARE YOU A LATERAL THINKER (Answers on page 23)

1. A graduate applying for pilot training with a major airline was asked what he would do if, after a long-haul flight to Sydney, he met the captain wearing a dress in the hotel bar. What would you do? 2. If you have two coins totalling 11p, and one of the coins is not a penny, what are the two coins? 3. A man built a rectangular house, each side having a southern view. He spotted a bear. What colour was the bear? 4. If you were alone in a deserted house at night, and there was an oil lamp, a candle and firewood and you only have one match, which would you light first? 5. What can you put in a wooden box that would make it lighter? The more of them you put in the lighter it becomes, yet the box stays empty. 6. Which side of a cat contains the most hair? 7. The 60th and 62nd British Prime Ministers of the UK had the same mother and father, but were not brothers. How do you account for this? 8. How many birthdays does a typical woman have? 9. Why can’t a man living in Canterbury be buried west of the River Stour? 10. Divide 40 by half and add ten. What is the answer?
