Welcome
or many of us, working from home during COVID-19, has meant spending a lot of time on 'video conference' applications like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. The effects of this have taken us by surprise. Having multiple giant heads, up close, staring at us for long periods of time can be very off-putting. How are these virtual meetings different from in-person meetings? Well, our brains can only do so many things consciously at the same time because we have limited working memory. In contrast to that, we can process much more information unconsciously, as we do with body language. Meeting online increases our 'cognitive load', because several of its features take up a lot of conscious capacity. What if the kids run in? We feel anxious about our home offices and things that might make us look bad to our colleagues. Will my Zoom background suddenly fail, leaving my hoarding tendencies on full display? Silence in real-life conversation is important and creates a natural rhythm. But in a video call, silence makes you anxious about the technology. Even a 1.2 second delay in responding online made people perceive the person talking as less friendly or focused. In addition, frustration with people turning their microphones on and off, lagging connections, and background noise mean the meeting rarely flows as smoothly. Looking at our own face is stressful enough. Zoom is here to stay for the time being, but I’m hoping to stick to my so far 100% record of not joining a Zoom quiz – man I’m getting miserable in my old age! Congratulations to Ben for discovering all the Winstons in the last issue and to Daniel for finding Bear. Stay safe everyone.

CARLISLE’S PAST
T
HISTORY
BEFORE 999 – the street pillar system
he 999 emergency call system was not introduced nationally until 1948. Prior to this, police on patrol (or beat) duty in Carlisle had to use a public phone box to call in at no more than hourly intervals. In an emergency, householders had either to find a policeman or again use the public phone to report a problem and could be delayed waiting for the operator. To overcome these problems a Street Pillar System was

introduced in 1941 to coincide with the opening of the new Police Headquarters in Rickergate. Pillars were situated at key points around the city giving the public quick and direct access to the emergency services. Beat officers used them to report in on the hour and record in writing in their notebook on the drop-down desk. A flashing orange light on top of the pillar was used to alert the beat officer that an urgent message was waiting. This system provided early warning should harm befall an officer and enabled sergeants and inspectors to meet up with officers to check beats were being worked correctly and the pillars

were used as beat conference points. There were 28 pillars in and around Carlisle, some are shown in the photos. 1966 brought an end to the pillar system since officers patrolling on foot and in cars were equipped with personal radios. By then the 999 system was in use as Carlisle exchange had been automated. There is much more about the history of the Carlisle City Police in the book ‘Watching Over Carlisle’ available at Bookends, Tullie House and direct from the publisher p3publications.com

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
was born in Darwen, Lancashire and spent most of my childhood there. In time though my family moved away due to my Dad’s job and we lived for a short while in the Midlands and then finally ended up in Sale, Greater Manchester before I married and moved to Carlisle. The rest of my family, as in grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, however, all remained in the Darwen/Blackburn area. Sadly a couple of years ago my aunt, my mum’s youngest sister, died. At her funeral there was mention of some of the things that she loved, one of these being ‘Peacock’s pasties’. This totally intrigued me and I was keen to know more about them. There is very little information available, but from what I can gather this was a family run business that had a shop in Darwen. I am presuming they were called Peacock. Apparently they would make more than 3,000 pasties every weekend to satisfy the queues that would snake around the adjoining streets, and my aunt would frequent these queues after a night out to get one of these longed for pasties. I found someone who wrote ‘I’ve never had a pasty that comes close to

Passing residential property to children & grandchildren with minimal tax liabilities the second in a series of bite size articles brought to you by the tax specialists at Saint & Co. How specialist Inheritance Tax advice helped our client, Mr Greenwood, pass his property onto his children and save £84,000 in tax.
M
r. Greenwood has recently retired and was concerned about the potential inheritance tax liability on his Estate, currently estimated to be worth approximately £2 million. Like many of our clients, he was looking to minimise the amount of tax payable on his estate. Included within his estate is a residential property with a market value of £600,000, generating a healthy rental income. Mr. Greenwood had sufficient funds and other properties to sustain his income, and didn’t require the property himself. He was keen to undertake some tax planning so he could effectively pass the property to his children and grandchildren. IHT is a complicated process to navigate alone. We helped Mr Greenwood understand the ins and outs of two options: Gifting his estate
to the children/grandchildren outright or gifting his estate to a discretionary trust. If he were to make an outright gift of the property to his children and grandchildren he would have to pay capital gains tax on the disposal. The charge would be £84,000. Obviously £84,000 is a considerable amount of tax and he asked us if there were any other options available. If he were to gift the property to a trust, he would be able to hold over the gain of £84,000. However, he would be subject to Inheritance Tax on the lifetime transfer to a trust. This would be taxed at the lifetime rate of inheritance tax (currently 20%) and would mean a tax of £55,000. The Solution – A gift to Mrs Greenwood, followed by a gift to a discretionary trust Transfers of chargeable assets
between spouses and civil partners do not generate any capital gains tax liability. Prior to the creation of a trust, we recommended Mr. Greenwood transfer a 50% interest to his wife, which would pass at no gain, no loss. The couple could then both transfer their interests in the property into a discretionary trust. As their interest would be £300,000 each, less than the current inheritance tax nil rate band of £325,000, the gift would not be subject to any lifetime inheritance tax. Needless to say, Mr Greenwood was exceptionally happy with our advice and the £84,000 tax saving. Inheritance tax rules are complicated, and they do change. The most effective advice comes from assessing your personal situation. We always recommend speaking to an IHT specialist to figure out the best options for you, based on the current rules. Speak to Pauline Jackson or Alex Dent, our inheritance tax specialists who are members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, to ensure the best advice for your circumstances.

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M

hat are your thoughts about travel? Have you already made travel plans for 2021/2022? After 4 months of taking almost no new bookings, I was slightly encouraged during July and August when my business saw a slight upturn and people were on the move again. I sensed that people wanted to get away, whether that was here in the UK or somewhere a bit warmer, just for a change of scene. Some clients were happy to wear a mask and get on a plane, others were a bit more cautious. Menorca (just before quarantine was imposed), Crete and Corfu were in demand, and one of my corporate clients is out in Germany for a long-term project. Here in the UK, my clients have been enjoying various staycations, from a 1 night break in a country house hotel in Cheshire, to a hotel stay in the Cotswolds and cottage holidays in Wales and Cornwall. Clients have also done roadtrips around the North Coast 500 route, described as the UK equivalent of Route 66. This is a round trip from Inverness, taking in stunning locations such as Torridon, Ullapool, the wild north coast, and heading back through Caithness with a stop in Dornoch before heading back home. GARDENING
Tulipmania
T
Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort
he year was 1637 and in February of that year an auction was held in Holland. 99 lots of tulip bulbs were bid on, and wait for it, they sold for a staggering 90,000 Guilders! In today’s money that represents some 2.6 million pounds. Not bad for a plant whose origin was that of a wild flower growing in Central Asia. Various histories of the tulip have been written, such has been the remarkable story of the humble or not so humble tulip. When the tulip arrived in the Netherlands a sort of madness took hold. There are various anecdotes such as the story of the fisherman who, mistaking a rare tulip for an onion ate it with his herring and was arrested and thrown into prison as a result. A prize variety of that time known as Semper Augustus even sold for the cost of the most expensive real estate in Amsterdam! History tells us that as the tulip bulb market grew levels of speculation grew to absurd heights. Traders began to offer extraordinary amounts for bulbs yet to flower. I suppose the inevitable happened: the bubble burst and some were ruined financially. The numbers of people that were probably involved in the tulip trade might have been relatively small, and some of the stories
surrounding the tulip in 17th Century Holland exaggerated, but certainly no other plant I can think of has been written about to such a sensational level. I have to admit to being a great admirer of the tulip. The beauty of form, the elegance, the colour.... The shear delight of planting a bulb in Autumn and seeing it emerge in Spring when colour is often in short supply. The plant breeders have been busy when it comes to the tulip and the sheer range of available bulbs is staggering. Bulbs such as tulips offer great advantages – they last from one year to the next, they are not too fussy about exact planting times nor watering regimes. Planting Spring flowering bulbs during their dormant stage is easy and results are usually predictable (though in gardening nothing can be assured!). Tulips are to my mind flexible: tulips can be used in a variety
of settings to suit every type of garden, and every gardener should find space because the results can be breathtaking. There are various divisions of the tulip that plant breeders have designed which is helpful in deciding the ever critical 'right plant for the right place'. Here are a few tulips of varying division type, colour and form: 'Apricot Beauty' Division early flowering single tulip around 15”/38cm height. Great in pots and looks good with 'Coleur Cardinal' which is red and plum. 'Black Hero' Division double late (peony-flowered) around 26”/65cm height. Almost at the other end of the scale in terms of height, this one flowers late spring has petals resembling dark chocolate with a lovely sheen. The stems are sturdy. 'White Triumphator' Division Lily-flowered around 24”/60cm height. Pure white flowers. 'Flaming Parrot' Division Parrot around 20”/50cm height. Magnificent fringed petals of pale yellow with flames of red. The blooms are large and heavy so place it in a sheltered position. The above is a snapshot of what is available, but I have tried and tested them over the years with good results. Now is the time to get planting, preferably before November is out. Happy planting!
I went to the doctor. I said to him ‘I’m frightened of lapels.’ He said, ‘You’ve got cholera!

Together we will protect our local hospice A local man is calling on the local community to safeguard the future of a Carlisle based hospice as the coronavirus situation continues to impact their fundraising efforts. Hospice supporter, Don Marks, has been travelling around the county championing a campaign to raise vital income for Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. The hospice has seen fundraising events cancelled, shop closures and income drop due to Covid-19. The money raised through these events
and the local community helps the charity to provide the highest standards of care, support and activities to local people with life limiting illnesses. Don explained, “Back in March I was made aware of the financial situation the hospice is in and I want to help raise money to protect the hospice. I am calling on the people of Cumbria to help and support in any way that they can. “I am urging people to put themselves in the position of the families of the children in Jigsaw, without the children’s hospice they would have to care for their children with life limiting illnesses 24/7. Or without the hospice what options would people have for the last days of their life? “Everyone locally has a link with the hospice and the hospice is by the community for the community.” Coronavirus has had a devastating
Excellent value for money with high exposure
impact across the country, with no area left untouched. As a specialist healthcare provider, Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw have treated local people with the virus ensuring every family receives end of life care filled with compassion and dignity. At a time when fundraising activities have stopped and the hospice’s charity shops are beginning to re-open, the Carlisle based charity is in the unfortunate situation whereby the need for specialist, compassionate care is increasing whilst charitable income has taken a drastic downturn. To find out how you can help Protect Your Local Hospice please visit www.edenvalleyhospice.org, www.jigsawhospice.org or contact the Fundraising Team on 01228 810801.

buying guide
I
LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS
f you’re looking to buy a new tree, including hedging plants and larger shrubs, you will probably find you have three options: • Bare-rooted • Containerised (that is, in a pot) • Root-balled (usually having been root-pruned and wrapped in fabric) At this time of year, bare rooted plants are starting to become available to buy or pre-order. They will usually be cheaper than the other options and provide the opportunity to put plants in the ground outside of their growing season, when they will be less distressed. If we have a long winter, bare-root season can extend to early April but we’d suggest not leaving it as late as that. Your bare-root plant is likely to be between one and three years old. It should be wrapped in polythene or some other medium to prevent the roots drying out. Select a plant that has an even spread of root growth and which looks fairly well developed.
BARE-ROOTED PLANTS provide the opportunity to put plants in the ground outside of their growing season Your plant will need planting as soon as possible to prevent it drying out and to get it established quickly. If you know you’re not going to have an opportunity to plant it within a few days, we’d suggest waiting before you buy it. Your plant might survive longer if you water it but you won’t be giving it the best start.
Before planting your new plant, give it a soak while you dig the hole you want to plant it in. Your hole should be just deep enough that all the roots will be underground and the stem or trunk is above ground. Depending on the room you have available, you can make your hole up to three times as wide as the root system, to ensure the tree is not trying to establish itself in compacted soil. Remove any wrappings from the roots and, if they are knotted or bound up, tease them out. Place the plant in the hole, supporting it at the correct height for the soil level, and refill around it, being careful to ensure you don’t leave air pockets. If it’s large enough or in an exposed position, think about adding a stake or support while it establishes itself. If your area is prone to rabbits or deer, think about adding a tree guard too. Give the whole area a good watering, even if it’s a wet day. Drought stress is common with newly planted trees and shrubs so make sure it doesn’t dry out during its first few years. It also helps to keep the area weeded, so it’s not competing with other plants, and you might want to fertilise or mulch the area during the winter to help it establish. (Don’t mulch right up to the trunk as that may cause rot). Finally, if you’re thinking about a new tree but aren’t sure what to choose, we like the Woodland Trust’s guide to native trees.
