ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome It’s arrived! We are very proud to introduce the new fresh look to your local Village Link Magazine. We look forward to continuing to cover interesting articles and stories as well as supporting our local businesses. We know people like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust, so get in touch if you would like to tell people a little about your business. People talk and this is your best form of promotion! We are still hand distributing over 10,000 copies around the city, as well as many local pick up points. Congratulations to Fraser Clark who won the Crossword Competition from the Jan/Feb Issue. Fraser and his partner will get to enjoy a Champagne Stay at the Crown Hotel, Wetheral. Well done to Pearl, who rescued Bear from Moorville Drive, and received £25.

Remember, you need to leave it a week before looking for Bear; this keeps it fair as some may receive their issue quicker than others. There are some great recipes for you to try from our food editors. I’ve taken a real interest in cooking lately. I’m going to treat my dear wife to an evening meal with soft, slow cooked pasta, the finest petits pois, finely diced soft soya flakes, a beautiful chicken stock marinade, finely seasoned with fresh basil and mixed herbs. Then, I’ll just tip in boiling water to the fill line, add the soy sauce sachet, and I’m done!

HISTORY

Carlisle’s Past

I

The Chancellor’s House and links with German miners

am currently researching the history of Tullie House for a new book and it is fascinating to discover the history of the families who lived there. Way back in 1560’s copper was a strategic metal as the Queen’s Navy used it to copper bottom their ships thus keeping them free from barnacles and other sea creatures. Our ships were thus faster and much more manoeuvrable than their Spanish counterparts. Most copper was imported as we had no deep mining industry, unlike the Germans. Queen Elizabeth 1st was keen to develop our own copper mining industry and in 1568 a joint English/ German company was incorporated by charter as ‘The Mines Royal’. Daniel Höchstetter and his miners from Augsburg in the Hartz mountains in Germany came to Newlands valley in Cumberland where they commenced deep mining for Copper. The influx of these young, well paid Germans to the area caused some problems with the locals, who resented their influence on (for example) the local girls, leading to fights and in one case a murder. Eventually they were assimilated as the wealth of the population increased. The mine was so profitable initially that the Germans named it ‘Gottes Gab’ or God’s Gift, which over the years became ‘Goldscope Mine’. The Höchstetters’, who must have become quite wealthy, lived in Keswick and eventually became accepted as gentry. Many other County family names such as the Tullies, The Stampers and The Rawlinsons are German in origin, being originally miners or merchant adventurers. There are still German names to be found on tombstones in Newlands churchyard.

Emmanuel Höchstetter succeeded his father as manager of Mines Royal and married Thomasine Nicolson. They had 10 children and their eldest daughter, also Thomasine, married one George Tullie at Crosthwaite in 1613. George Tullie lived at Whitehall in Carlisle, on Abbey Gate (now Abbey Street). It was their eldest son Timothy who inherited Whitehall on his mother’s death in 1669 but it was George’s grandson Thomas, who demolished Whitehall and built, in 1696, the mansion of Tullie House in its place. It became known as The Chancellor’s House (home of Lord of the Manor). The original lead downspouts are still in place dated 1696. This was the original Tullie House. Rebuilt and extended over the next 300 years it was in turn a home, to several well-known families, a museum, art-college, technical institution, and public library, finally becoming the present Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.

Q: What’s the best and worst aspect of being in your specific business? A: Best is that I have flexible working hours. The worst is ironing in a heat wave! The Summer of 2013, although fantastic for a BBQ, was very difficult to work in. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I’m a real family person and love to spend time looking after my nieces and nephews. I’m also a keen baker, which goes down well when I’m babysitting! My husband and I also enjoy traveling and are looking forward to a trip to Paris later on in the year. Q: If you could hold onto just one memory from your life forever, what would that be? A: I really don’t think I could pick just one! But one of my fondest memories has to be the day I got married.

MONEY

SA Make the right

choice

by Mike Turney [Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society] Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) remain an important building block in helping create capital and income for the future and since their launch in 1999, when they replaced Personal Equity Plans (PEPs) and Tax-Exempt Special Savings Accounts (TESSAs), the popular personal finance vehicle has gone some way to address the shortcomings in the UK’s savings culture.

W

ithout doubt, ISAs have proved a success story, with more than £443 billion invested over the last 15 years, of which a record £57 billion was subscribed in the last tax year (source: HMRC, Sep 2013). The opportunity to invest in a tax-efficient way has made ISAs the cornerstone of many investment strategies; both savers and investors are understandably enticed by the ability to achieve tax-free interest and no further tax on income or capital gains. There are two types of ISA: Cash ISAs are savings accounts where the interest is paid tax-free, and Stocks & Shares ISAs which, as the name suggests, allow investment into a wider range of stock market and other financial instruments. However, there are restrictions on how much can be invested in each type. The full annual allowance of £11,520 (2013/14) can be invested in a Stocks & Shares ISA, but only half - £5,760 - can be saved in a Cash ISA (although the balance of the allowance can still be invested in a Stocks & Shares version). An inflation-linked increase will see the allowance rise to £11,880 in the new tax year. An individual or couple who invested the full ISA allowance each year could by now have sheltered funds of £124,080 and £248,160 respectively from any further tax liability, according to HMRC. But there is a sting in the tail. The squeeze on savers from record-low interest rates is also being felt by those with Cash ISAs. Figures from the Bank of England in December showed that the average Cash ISA deposit rate is just 0.67%. The reality is that the tax benefits provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain low for a number of years to come and,

regrettably, savers cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. Against that backdrop, whilst cash is certainly the right home for money that might be needed in the short term, ISA allowances might be better utilised by investing in a diversified portfolio of assets that have the scope to deliver higher levels of income and long-term capital gains and, in doing so, make the most of the tax freedom on returns. Of course, investors need to bear in mind that the value of a Stocks & Shares ISA may fall as well as rise and it does not provide the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. As well as considering the best use of this and future years’ ISA allowances, those who have already built up significant ISA funds might be able to improve the income and capital returns on offer. All too often, people do not review their ISA portfolio strategy frequently enough. How are the investment managers performing? Is the asset mix, geographic spread or fund choice still right for them? Can they improve the incomegenerating potential of their ISA portfolio? Are they happy with the service they’re receiving? A thorough review of an ISA portfolio by an experienced wealth manager can ensure that it is appropriately structured and diversified to help achieve

High quality glossy print brings out the best in your adverts

immediate or future financial goals. ISAs should be a fundamental element of financial planning, but it is also important to consider them in the context of an overall investment strategy and to ensure that an ISA portfolio can be adjusted easily to cater for changing needs. As a final thought, parents, grandparents, and indeed anyone who might want to help a child build capital for his or her future, should not overlook Junior ISAs, which were introduced in November 2011 to give under-18s a similar tax-efficient savings opportunity. The limit for investment in this tax year is £3,600; but given the future financial challenges faced by the children of today, any help will provide them with a valued head start. Remember that the favourable tax treatment given to ISAs is subject to changes in legislation and may not necessarily be maintained in future.

Camtec Security is a local CCTV company, established for over 23 years specialising exclusively in CCTV & Access Control Systems. In that time they have installed hundreds of systems throughout Cumbria and North Lancashire and remain strongly focussed on their core business. Alan Sykes, Managing Director of Camtec Security, said “It is tempting to provide a solution for other related areas, such as fire, security alarms and IT systems but this would not enable you to constantly evaluate the vast array of CCTV products currently available. Choosing equipment that offers performance and reliability that we can supply and install at a competitive price gives us the edge over our competitors. We have seen the domestic market increase dramatically with more and more families wanting to protect their property. Intruder alarms provide a level of protection which for some is ideal but for others it is CCTV that can give them the security they are looking for. It is like having someone watching over your house every hour of the day. It is proven that CCTV is a deterrent that will make prospective intruders think twice before approaching your property”. Alan went on to say “We wanted to bring the real benefits of CCTV to the domestic market. High definition cameras can offer fantastic quality pictures not seen before on domestic CCTV systems, making both facial and number plate recognition a real possibility. The price for this type of system has in general been reserved for the commercial sector but working closely with major manufacturers has produced a CCTV system which costs no more than a traditional analogue system and is now affordable to most domestic households. The equipment is compact, with high definition quality with night vision cameras which you can view via laptop PC, mobile phone or your own TV”. puzzle has befallen the inhabitants of Townfoot Farm, known collectively as K C and the Sunshine Band. Could it be that Kid Creole and the Coconuts are one and the same? A quick Google search will no doubt solve this conundrum. Coconuts are topical. If I am not cycling, I drive to Lazonby class on Saturday mornings and I always listen to Absolute 80’s. A station I love and laugh to. Laughter is without doubt a good start to the day. On one particular morning Frank Skinner, the host, was recounting a recent dressing room experience. In the fruit bowl provided sat a coconut. How he pondered could he a) get into it and b) do this before his live appearance. He concluded it added something exotic to the bowl and that was it.

This possibly misunderstood fruit come nut is, quite rightly it seems, enjoying superfood status. When I learnt that a coconut contains more potassium than a banana, I sat up and listened. I am a huge supporter of the banana. This possibly misunderstood fruit come nut is, quite rightly it seems, enjoying superfood status. Coconut milk is delicious and nutritious and because coconut milk does not contain any fructose it doesn’t give you a sugar rush that then results in a dip of energy. Coconut oil is made up of saturated fat (the good one) and is sent straight to the liver to be used by the body as energy. Coconut milk is creamy and rich but it is 100% healthy. I

Life and the occasional gardening tip from garden editor jason hindmoor

decided that during the winter whilst I have a little bit more time on my hands that I should make a conscious effort to learn more plant names. This follows an embarrassing episode in the autumn when a customer asked John to trim her Sneezewort. He did his best and hopes to be available for parole in 2016. In fairness to John, it is a trade that’s fraught with problems. Every plant seems to have a daft name and also an even dafter Latin name. Turkey’s Corn, Kangeroo Paws, Hen and Chicks and Lambsquarters just to get you started. So far we have survived mainly by pointing and asking ‘do you mean the prickly thing in the corner?’ This normally works quite well unless the customer’s wife is standing too close to the plant in which case it can get slightly awkward. Anyway this is a good opportunity to thank everyone for their support and kind words following my recent spell in hospital in Spain whilst on holiday. Following extensive testing it turns out that I have a bad peanut allergy. Finding this out has however proven to be a mixed blessing. Since then, for entertainment on a Friday night my wife forces me to play Russian roulette with a bag of Revels. She should really be more understanding as she is allergic to cats. I told her after her last attack that she probably shouldn’t be eating them anyway. Last week she crashed her car into the speed camera at Warwick Bridge.

She rang the insurance company and asked them how much money she was going to get for the car. They said it didn’t work that way and they would just replace the car with a similar one. She said if that’s the way you do business then you better cancel the life policy on my husband.

This follows an embarra ssing episode in the autumn when a customer a sked John to trim her Sneezewort I’ve taken to keeping a picture of my wife in my wallet. It’s not as romantic as it sounds, it’s just to remind me why there is never any money in it. Whilst I was in hospital I heard two little boys discussing what was wrong with each of them. summer bedding plants as soon as possible, but a late frost could kill them. Wait – to give your plants a better chance.

5 There’s still time to plant shrubs

and perennials, but give them a good soak in water beforehand.

6 If you have not thought about

cutting your lawn, best do so now. Put the mower on a high cut for the first few gos, gradually lowering the height as the grass grows more vigorously. Think about a spring feed if it is looking peaky.

7 If you get on top of weeds now,

while the beds are still empty, you will be ahead for the rest of the year.

Andrew Glass and his team welcome you to the Queen Inn, where delicious, locally sourced food and great service are served. You may have seen us before as, in the early 90’s, we were in The Crown and Thistle in Rockcliffe, The Stag Inn at Crosby on Eden by the mid 90’s, The Fox and Pheasant in Armathwaite in the late 90’s-until 2003, The Pooley Bridge Inn, Pooley Bridge until 2012 and now here, at The Queen Inn, Great Corby, opening in February 2014.

1 kg Pink Champagne Rhubarb Chop the rhubarb stick, discarding leaves • 300grm Caster Sugar • 300ml Double Cream

P

re-heat the oven to 180°c. Place the rhubarb in an ovenproof dish, mix in the sugar and cook for 45 minutes until soft and there is lots of syrup has gathered. Strain through a sieve, put the syrup aside for serving later. Mash the rhubarb well with a fork and leave to cool. When cool stir in the cream then pour into 6 tall glasses. Serve with Vanilla ice-cream with the syrup poured over it if required. Tip: The syrup tastes great poured over Greek yoghurt & muesli

Stir Fry Chicken with Lime and Coconut

recently thought I was going to be arrested in Marks and Spencer. I had spent that long deciding on whether to buy a necklace or not that I was sure I was beginning to look suspicious. The problem is, I can’t seem to make decisions any more. Another example of this problem was highlighted recently when, on a day out, my husband and I decided to stop for a coffee. The queue was long, but I decided to stick it out as we had spent the previous hour debating on which café to stop at in the first place. The plan was simple, I would get a coffee for Ian, a tea for me and we would share a scone. In the queue I noticed the corned beef pie with side salad was a popular choice and looked rather nice. When I returned to our table with the corned beef pie and a large piece of chocolate cake, somewhat more than the scone we planned to share, the response was a justified ‘What on earth!’ with my reply being ‘Don’t even ask’. I never did get a necklace, couldn’t decide which one. On to food. A great mid-week meal is Delia’s Stir Fry Chicken with Lime and Coconut [Serves 2]. Chop two chicken breasts into bite sized pieces and place in a bowl

I

with the juice and zest of one large lime. Leave to marinate for one hour. Then heat one tablespoon olive oil in a pan or wok and add the chicken and stir fry for 3-4 minutes until golden. Then add one chopped green chilli and stir fry for another minute, 150ml coconut milk, one dessertspoon fish sauce, a handful chopped coriander and two chopped spring onions. Cook for a further 2-3 minutes then serve with rice. Sprinkle with some more chopped coriander and spring onions to serve.

man and his wife were driving down the road when a policeman pulls them over. The policeman says to the man, “Do you know that you were speeding?” The man replies, “No, I didn’t know I was speeding.” The mans wife then yells, “Yes you did, you knew you were speeding I’ve been telling you to slow down for miles.” “SHUT UP!” the man says to his wife.” Then the policeman says, “Well, since I’ve got you pulled over, did you know that your car tax has expired?” “No” the man replies, “I did not know that”. “WHATEVER!” his wife yells, “I’ve been telling you to renew it for 2 months now!” “Shut up” the man yells to his wife again!” Curios, the policeman walks over to the woman’s side of the car and asks her, “Does he always talk to you this way?” “No” she replies, ” Only when he’s been drinking!” Speaking of back seat passengers,

I genuinely really struggle to hear what’s being said from the back of the car. That was, however, until I found myself test driving the new Mercedes Benz S Class. Of all the gadgets and gizmos, including the ambient lighting, Mercedes claim that inside the cabin is virtually silent; practically zero road noise or wind roar. I can honestly say, whilst driving down the M6 with three passengers, I was able to hear and take part in the conversation with my back seat passengers. The fit and finish of this car is superb. The attention to detail and the quality of the materials used are second to none. It’s a joy to drive, effortless and relaxing too; especially with the option for a Hot Stone Massage on one of the seat heating settings. It’s the best luxury limo money can buy.

1964-2014 Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty written by Rose Wolfe The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was designated in December 1964 in recognition of the quality of its landscape and its significant historic and scientific interest.

T

he Solway Coast AONB stretches from Rockcliffe in the North to Maryport in the South, covering about 115 square kilometres of the Solway Plain. The primary purpose of this designation is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area. It contains many locally, nationally and internationally important features some centring on landscape and others on important wildlife and heritage. Many features are protected by designations and Eden House, Lancaster St, Carlisle CA1 1TF collectively they indicate the high value of the area www.homeplankitchens.co.uk email: info@homeplankitchens.co.uk and underpin the need to protect and enhance it for future generations. The Solway Coast in its present form, has been part of the landscape for 10,000 years since the retreat of the last great ice sheet. Since then, man has settled in the area and has created a mosaic of habitats some of which are relatively unspoilt and others have been modified. The Romans, Vikings, Reivers and eventually ourselves have shaped the Solway Coast into what it is today. There is a wide range of habitats, all of which are fragile, and need our help to conserve and enhance. We will be celebrating our 50th year of designation by having a yearlong series of events and promotions, of this unique and beautiful area in the North of Cumbria, often rarely known about but hidden secrets are sometimes the best!

This remote and tranquil area possesses many features such as: • •

Stunning landscape with wide views over the Solway Firth to Scotland Amazing lowland raised mires with year long wildfowl, birdlife and species specific to living on this unique habitat. The new Solway Wetlands Centre at Campfield Marsh RSPB Reserve, near Bowness on Solway, provides a wonderful interpretation of the area with educational facilities and an area to relax, have a cuppa, and just take in the atmosphere.

• • • •

Wild salt marshes with migratory bird species Sand dunes designated as Special Sites of Scientific Interest, and many more landscape features Traditional villages with ‘Clay Dabbin’ style of buildings The World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall also lies within this AONB

As part of the Heritage here the Viking form of Haaf Netting is still carried out in the Solway, and the traditional style of North Cumberland Hedgelaying is widely promoted by our annual competition and training event. Volunteering events and activities are held year round and all are welcome to be involved. Look out for our events and activities throughout the year and join in with conserving this unique and special area. VILLAGE LINK / History / Crosby Lodge was very interested to read David Ramshaw’s article about Crosby Lodge and the Kennedy family. What David did not mention is that the fascinating Kennedy family archive is deposited at the Cumbria Archive Centre in Carlisle. David Kennedy married Elizabeth Dalton in 1800. She might have been described as an “eligible spinster” since she was the sole inheritor of not only her grandfather’s estate (James Graham, apothecary and mayor of Carlisle) but also her father’s estate (George Dalton, also mayor Carlisle). David gave up his lieutenancy in the Princess Royal’s Own Light Dragoons and settled down to married life in a house in Abbey Street which had been built for his father-in-law in the 1770’s. Following her husband’s sudden death in 1819 she had to settle his debts and take over the management of her estates with the help of two agents, William Wood and William Morley. In 1824 she sold the Brunstock estate and moved in 1825 to Rugby where both her sons were at Rugby School. She sold the Oulton Hall estate in 1830 and the Crosby estate in 1837. She appears to have lived in Cheltenham from 1832 until she died there in 1851. David and Elizabeth had five children who, perhaps, never lived up to their mother’s expectations since she often had to help them financially. Elizabeth was born in 1801 married the Revd. John Besley in 1829; she died in 1834. Georgiana was born in 1805 and married Captain John Molloy of H.M. Rifle Brigade in 1829. Later the same year they emigrated on Australia and the archive includes “a list of clothes and equipment needed by a lady going to India”, Georgiana’s journal of the voyage from England on The Warrior to Australia. Dalton was born in 1808. After Rugby School, he followed a military career in the 12th Regiment of Foot and bought an ensignry for £450 in 1827 but resigned when he was unable to buy a lieutenancy in 1831. Mary Jane was born in 1811. The Revd. J.S. Lowry of Stanwix proposed marriage in 1835 but Mrs. Kennedy would not agree. George was born in 1813. He was expelled from Rugby School in 1830 because of his poor academic performance which did not improve even with a private tutor. The archive includes letters about the national cholera epidemic of 1832. Readers interested in this and other local families and places are most welcome to visit the Archive Centre. Further details are available at www.cumbria.gov.uk/ archives. David M. Bowcock, Assistant County Archivist, Carlisle

village notes

A

s the weather gets warmer and the evenings lighter, there’s really no excuse not to get out and about and explore all Cumbria has on offer. People always say that Londoners never make use of the Theatres as much as visitors do: I’m sure it’s actually a general human malaise not to make much effort in your home surroundings, wherever they may be – partly as sometimes just going to work and dealing with family can be enough and the time can pass almost without your noticing. What I’ve found striking is that you don’t have to go to the larger settlements in Cumbria for good theatre, music and sporting events but can find them in your local village. Highlights North is a touring theatre company which performs in places such as Castle Carrock village hall; Kirklinton Hall is set this year to host a gala Opera performance by Regent Opera, before then being the base for the Stepping Stones Festival; Lanercost will have its Festival in June and Castle Carrock in July; and Hayton’s scarecrows over the May bank holiday are the best I’ve ever seen. Brampton is home to car and motorbike racing; cyclists are frequently seen shooting past my kitchen window on a Saturday or Sunday morning.I can’t help feeling disappointed when I let life slide by without getting out and about and enjoying it to the full, even if it’s just making sure I go somewhere with the children each weekend. Whilst

22

there’s plenty on the doorstep I also have a long list of places I want to go in other parts of the county. Someone once said to me that “life’s too long not to enjoy work” and I’d take that one step further. Life’s both too long and too short and too gloriously and exc itingly varied not to cram it as full as you possibly can. After all what on earth is the point of being here otherwise? What heartens me about living in Cumbria is that although people work hard, there is not that rushed mentality of ‘heads down; ignore everybody else’ that you get in London (the rush hour tubes are jam-packed but remarkably chatter-free). When I spoke to people about what they wanted to achieve in 2014 most found it, like me, difficult to be tied down to one thing. Andy, who works for Carlisle Leisure or Tim and Penny, who work for the Forestry Commission, all had long lists of things to do, and not all within their own organisations. Having rambled, I’ve realised that probably what I’m saying is that there’s not really any need to go abroad. I love foreign travel but every weekend in Cumbria can be an adventure from your own front door.
