Welcome

L

ast month, Storm Desmond brought destruction to Carlisle and other parts of Cumbria and Northern England with more than a month’s rain falling in just one day. Over £20m has been spent on flood defences since 2005 and we were told that this would protect our city from a 1 in 200 year event. Alas in Warwick Road the defences proved inadequate as the quantity of water flowing down the Eden was much greater than in 2005 and the flooding was worse. Obviously Carlisle’s flood defence system will have to be completely re-evaluated for the future. However, it was the resilience and strength of character displayed by Cumbrian people that was so heart warming. Before rescue teams were on the scene, a friend of mine was seen wading waist high through flood waters, asking his neighbours if they needed any help; with no thought to the fact that his own house and belongings were ruined. We caught up with our history editor and author, David Ramshaw, who is doing his bit to help, by donating £1 from the sale of his new book The Carlisle Floods 2015* to the Cumbrian Community Foundation Flood Relief Fund. His previous flood books in 2005 and 2009 have produced a total of £16,500 for the flood fund and £4000 for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team. David said,

“The problem now is recovery for the victims of this disaster. I spent the whole of Sunday 6th December walking round the town and taking photographs. I was struck by the speed of response of people this time compared to 2005. On Sunday, the area was besieged by rescue groups from all over the country and on several occasions I observed the wonderful community spirit that exists, such as in Milbourne Street where two older people in wellies were pushing a drinks trolley through flood water, supplying tea and coffee to residents and helpers. Congratulations to Mrs S Kirpatrick who won the Crossword Competition and enjoyed a ‘Festive Afternoon Tea’, courtesy of the Crown Hotel Wetheral. A huge well done to Jay from Parkland Village who rescued Bear from the horrible weather we had last month….amazingly he was bone dry… those Tesco Freezer bags are amazing!

Carlisle’s Past Smuggling the Spirit by train!

Customs and Excise Controls in Carlisle

I

f Scotland ever decides to vote for independence then Carlisle Citadel station may once more have border controls as in the mid 1800s. In 1830 the duty on spirits in Scotland was three shillings and four pence (17p) per proof gallon and in England seven shillings and sixpence (37.5p); this difference in duty created a lucrative trade in the smuggling of spirits across the border. As a result Excise officers attended at Berwick and Carlisle railway stations to examine passengers’ baggage. This caused concern amongst citizens resulting in letters to The Times expressing concern that the country Book Cover was becoming, “a minor European principality with annoying and petty border restrictions.” Smugglers resorted to various

means to beat the controls. This whisky pannier is one of a pair that would be strapped around the waist of a man or woman. If a woman she hoped the excise men would just assume that she was pregnant. Excise man Daniel Allen kept a customs book. The page shown gives details of the seizure of bottles of spirits at Citadel Station from Mary Nicholson and Mary Scott on 1 and 5 December 1851. The entry for Mary Scott is shown. However this was not to last for long as the spirit duty was equalised in both countries and the Border Service ceased on 18 September 1855.

love going out for meals, but find myself saying more and more ‘I could have fed us for a week on that; breakfast, dinner and tea’! For example, my husband and I had a couple of days away recently, just to Harrogate nothing too exotic, and for some reason when we go away, we always struggle to know where to eat out. We scan reviews which can sometimes be helpful but more often than not confuse us even more. Anyhow we finally decided on a restaurant we could walk to from our B&B. The restaurant was lovely I have to say, it wasn’t busy but not completely deserted either. However, we had

A man rushes into the chemist’s and says to the assistant: “Do you have anything that’ll stop hiccups?” The assistant leans over the counter and smacks the man across his face. “What was that for?” Exclaims the man. The assistant replies: “Well, you don’t have hiccups any more do you?” “I never did have, it’s for my wife, she’s outside in the car”.

not been in more than five minutes when we realised that there was going to be a problem. In a nutshell there were too many staff on looking for things to do. If you took a sip of your drink, someone topped it up for you. The minute you put your knife and fork down, they cleared it away, we hadn’t even swallowed our last mouthful! We were asked three times if we would like dessert and three times we asked if we could have ten minutes. Less than two hours later and £90 lighter, we were back at our B&B and I was in my jammies reading my book!

Now I’m not saying I would never spend £90 on a meal out, but I would expect a full evening for that and not be rushed. A good waiter/ waitress should be aware of their customers, not rushing them but not forgetting them either. Oh, and communicate! Surely not too much to ask? Anyhow, on to this month’s recipe. During the bleak winter months we still crave for comfort food. When I was in Canada, visiting my daughter, I bought a cookbook called ‘Bannock & Beavertails’ which says it gives a taste of life in early Fort Langley, the birth place of British Columbia. In this book there is a recipe called ‘Shortbread Apple Pudding’ which we would call Apple Crumble, but I have to say it is the best apple crumble recipe I have ever made and here it is. I am using their cup method for measurements which is the American/Canadian way. Place 5/6 peeled, cored and sliced apples in a buttered baking dish. Mix together ¾ cup white sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp nutmeg and 1 tbsp. cornflour and then sprinkle this over the apples. Then mix together 2 cups plain flour, 1 cup brown sugar and 1 cup butter to make a crumble and spread over the top. Bake at 180 degrees for about 45 minutes. Serve with cream or ice cream. It is delicious. www.village-link.co.uk

probate? by Butterworths Solicitors, Carlisle

I

n a nutshell, ‘probate’ is the name given when you manage someone’s estate when they die. There are two types of grant of probate: (1) ‘probate’ and (2) ‘letters of administration’. If the deceased left a Will then ‘probate’ is granted in favour of one or all of the Executors named in their will. If there is no Will then ‘letters of administration’ are granted however this is still referred to as ‘probate’ because, for practical purposes, the two types of grant are identical. There are, however, circumstances when probate is not needed. For example, if an estate is less than £5,000 and only includes cash funds, you would not normally

need probate. This figure varies depending on each bank, so it is good to check with the bank to see

www.caroline-nash.co.uk if they require probate. If the estate includes property, land or shares however, you will always need to obtain probate. If there is a Will the Executors named in the Will are the persons who are entitled to obtain probate. If there is no Will then the next of kin are the ones entitled to administer the estate and there are statutory rules as to who is entitled to apply for letters of administration. Losing a loved one is a very difficult time for anyone to deal with. Tax changes we genuinely can look forward to:

long time ago in an accountants office far, far away…… the year end client meeting was about tax and how much a business could save. However, in a changing world where basic tax planning can be considered unfair (how dare you Mr Miliband) and there is pressure on bigger businesses to pay their fair share, not just what they are required by law, where are we heading with what tax we should pay? Does the “modern” outlook on tax make business owners bad for wanting to pay the least tax possible? Even when they can use tax savings to reinvest in their business? To create jobs or to offer an improved service? The famous, from footballer Wayne Rooney, comedian Jimmy Carr to Take That’s Gary Barlow Graeme Seavor

Our advice has to be based on the law, providing proactive advice based on pending changes. There are many changes to look forward to in 2016… or not for some owner managers of limited companies who can look forward to a huge tax hike when the new dividend allowance replaces the current dividend tax credits.

SUPER HUMAN

I

Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland

f Cumbria could turn back the clock it would. Last week, before the catastrophic events of the weekend, I found a fallen tree had blocked my usual walk up fell side. I could have chosen another walk, but I felt determined. So, I headed cross-country for a short way, thereby avoiding the fallen tree. Unfamiliar terrain made me nervous so I moved fast. As I re-joined the lonning, having now avoided the fallen tree, I wanted to run. I had such energy and bounce. Why? Adrenaline; the hormone released into the blood to give the body more energy when

After only 20 minutes of gentle exercise your mind will be clearer and solutions will have been found. we feel fear or think we are in danger. I was certainly not in danger, but I wanted to get my little tribe (that’s the dogs) to more recognisable surroundings. I had visions of a bull suddenly appearing in the far distance – taking to charge and … well, you can guess the rest. Suffice to say I have a vivid imagination. This same hormone - adrenaline - will be coursing through everyone at this time of crisis. It makes us temporarily super-human. But, it should only be temporary. Our heart rate quickens and our lungs open to take in more oxygen. This state of high alert can be exhausting; it is the inability to switch off. During challenging times the mind and body need to be cared for and distracted from what is going on around. Exercise is that distraction. Some quiet reflection is needed. After only 20 minutes of gentle exercise your mind will be clearer and solutions will have been found. It may sound bonkers, but I carry a Dictaphone with me. I can then record my ‘light bulb’ moments. It really works – a bit like making a list, but in the great outdoors to blow cobwebs away. Putting things into perspective brings clarity. When we feel out of control it is vital we take control - even when circumstances seem unimaginably difficult. Our bodies and minds are clever working machines but they can’t run on adrenaline alone. They thrive on endorphins, the feel good chemical released by exercise, and that is the difference between running and walking calmly. It is time for calm. Fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson reflects on a labour of love which took forty years to achieve – completing all 214 Wainwright Fells.

am writing this piece in the aftermath of the terrible floods that have once again clobbered our region. Second time in a decade. Is this a direct result of climate change? Is the planet fighting back? And yet- we must never underestimate the awesome power of Mother Nature. For, as a man who enjoys grappling with the elements, I realise we have to acknowledge our place in the scheme of things. We are just passing through the landscape. Skiddaw is five hundred million years old, I think I remember reading. That’s older than the Queen, Bruce Forsyth and Cliff Richard rolled into one! Leaf through a book of photographs by W.A. Poucher, the Lakeland photographer. Here’s a scene we know well. The narrow profile of the White Lion hotel in Patterdale and the road running through the village. But look more closely. The cars are ancient. A Ford Anglia! I recall my brother telling me that when one of our neighbours acquired one, he considered it to be the height of cool! The fins at the rear of the car he considered to be reminiscent of a American Chevrolet. In the picture there is a quaint little filling station, selling fuel for next to nothing, by nowadays standards. I remember my father, who died in 1976, once saying to my mother “mark my words Dot, (Dorothy) one day petrol will be a pound a gallon!!” And yet the buildings and the backdrop are identical to the present day. But we are temporary.... temporary. We live for just eighty years (or so, with luck) and move on. Please understand, I am not trying to depress you, merely stating a fact. And as a bloke rapidly approaching sixty, my message is simple; seize the day. And that, simply put, is possibly my reason to scale the fells. What can a person’s motivation be to do this? I can honestly say if you need

to ask the question, then don’t do it. As a child all I ever wanted to do was to go to Silloth and play on the west beach. Seen one lake, you’d seen them all, or so I thought. The turning point on this school of thought was in reading the Wainwright guides. Although hand written and with black and white diagrams and drawings, they sparked something inside of me. A desire to follow in the great mans footsteps! Puffing and panting up the slopes, sweating cobs, wondering how much further there was to climb; you might have cause to wonder whether it was worth all the effort? And then – the exhilaration of the summit made it all worthwhile! Sitting by the cairn surveying the wonderful view (provided it was visible of course), enjoying a drink and a snack-a King on his throne! Curiously enough, it’s not the days of gentle breezes and blue skies that live on in the memory, but rather the ones where the wind roars like a demon, and you spend the day doing battle with the conditions, or wandering around in a huge circle in a dense mist (it happens, believe me) that you can always recall. I have been lost on the fells on quite a few occasions but always- with the aid of a compass, a guidebook and a bit of luck found my way back down safely. Just last summer when in the company of two of my fellwalking buddies on the excellent spiky summit of Bowfell, I took a moment to leave them noshing their sarnies and stood on the very peak in a strong wind facing where I knew the Scafells to be (they were lost in cloud) and just thought “Wow!! Bring it on!”.. in other words I savoured the moment. Experienced the experience. Which is something if you haven’t done already, I implore you to do. www.village-link.co.uk

A Readers’ response to our Nov/Dec Issue. ‘Memories of Knockupworth Cottage’ by Malcom Robinson

I

was interested to read Mr. Ramshaw’s article about the old bridge and cottage near Burgh Road roundabout which brought back some related childhood memories of mine. My dad worked on the railway at several country stations before moving to Carlisle Citadel Station in 1949, when he rented Knockupworth Cottage and biked to work every day. The cottage seemed quite isolated to me, as few families had cars. We relied on occasional bus services. I got a bus from the farm gate to attend Ash Lea Infants school (Miss Maine was Head). I went home by bus to Moorhouse Road then walking along Burgh Road, down that long hill, and along the lane. My dad kept a large garden of vegetables and soft fruit which ran up to the bridge, and there was an old well at that end, covered over. He surfaced the lane end beside the cottage with clinker ash (maybe from the power station) to keep the mud down. We had an Elsan chemical toilet in a small outhouse (not to linger over in Winter!). There was cold water but no electricity. We had a coal fire with oven, trivets to stand cooking pots or flat irons on, and a copper in the kitchen, heated by a separate fire underneath. Bath time was in the kitchen, using water from the copper and dodging draughts from the back door, or in a zinc bath set before the fire. Laundry had to be dried using a large mangle (wooden rollers) and airing racks. Toast made over the fire using home-baked bread and fresh raspberry jam was great! We could stand on the bridge and watch the trains to Silloth go underneath. We got watercress from the railway ditches and also caught newts and tadpoles. We made casts of animal tracks using plaster of Paris and had hobbies for the winter months. However, it was a fairly solitary existence for a young family. One night the cottage was burgled by a young lad. It was dark but we awoke just in time to see him walking across the front lawn eating a freshly-baked custard pie then running off! Over the bridge were a couple of field gates and beyond the River Eden (where we caught tiddlers) with Grinsdale in one direction and, towards town, a river path to “Engine Lonning” where a large coal hopper

stood like a doleful bird towering over the rail wagons, behind a high wall of rail sleepers. The Willowholme power station was not far away, and the old Caledonian railway bridge (Waverley viaduct). Knockupworth Farm and Knockupworth Hall are on Burgh Road (I remember the Atkinsons, Leitchs and Carsons). We got our butter, eggs and milk at the farm and “mobile shops” would also call. I remember going home in style by ambulance after having my tonsils out at the City General hospital. The City boundary was marked by a stream which ran underneath Burgh Rd at the foot of the hill just before the Hall. This meant I was a “County Council pupil” but went to Caldewgate Junior School (Mr Jackson was Head). I managed to pass the “eleven-plus” exam and went to Carlisle Grammar School. We moved into town just before I left junior school. So although I lived at Knockupworth for only a short while it seemed a long time then. It does seem very strange now when I can drive past the cottage within a stone’s throw of the new road. It looks very neglected and the surrounding fields look a mess. I was looking across at the bridge only last week and saying to my wife how forlorn it looks standing alone amongst the devastation that once was my home. I have often wondered if there really was a man named Worth living at the cottage in times past to operate (say) a cantilever bridge for canal users, hence the name “Knock up Worth !” Is it likely? Maybe not, but it is nice to imagine the situation! 1

5 tips for be tter

broadband

F

by Nick Kittoe, MD of Solway Communications

irst off, who are Solway Communications? Well in a nutshell, for over three years we’ve been providing superfast broadband that covers homes, businesses and schools in North Cumbria and South Dumfriesshire. We give our users a guaranteed speed, the highest quality signal (even in those hard-to-reach areas), better reliability and better service than the leading providers – and that’s no exaggeration. So we know a thing or two about broadband… and that’s why I’m here today to give you my top 5 tips for better broadband: 1. Plug yourself in – Ensure you have a master socket installed. This is where your telephone line enters your property and is the best place to connect your router, as it’s where you’re most likely to get the best performance and fastest broadband speeds. 2. Use the right cable – Ensure your modem is connected to your master socket (rather than an extension socket) using a short cable. 3. Filtered faceplates – Fit a filtered faceplate, which can substantially increase broadband speeds, particularly if you have telephone extension sockets in your home! 4. Watch your bandwidth – It’s an old one, but remember to turn off all devices you’re not using – anything actively connected to the internet will use up bandwidth, including bandwidth-hogging services such as Skype and P2P file sharing sites. 5. Off and on again – If nothing else worked, turn it all off – your router, repeaters, smart TV, computer, tablet, laptop, printer, in fact your whole network – and when I say off, I mean off. Count to ten, make a wish and then turn it all on again If that hasn’t helped, then you’re going to need something a little stronger… just give us a call we’ll be happy to share with you another five tips and talk you through them! Because what we at Solway offer is what you get, and that’s our promise.

Creating a space that nurtures strength, flexibility and balance. Discover a body you love… you made new!

dowager countess violet crawley - most memorable quotes: “Of course it would happen to a foreigner. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else’s house.” “I do think a woman’s place is eventually in the home, but I see no harm in her having some fun before she gets there.” “A lack of compassion can be as vulgar as an excess of tears”. “Don’t be defeatist, dear, it’s very middle class.” “There’s nothing simpler than avoiding people you don’t like. Avoiding one’s friends, that’s the real test.”

A priest is driving towards Carlisle when he is stopped for speeding by a police car. The policeman smells alcohol on the priest’s breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, “Sir, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest. The policeman says, “Then why do I smell wine?”. The priest looks at the bottle and says, “Good Lord! He’s done it again!” I haven’t verified this, but it sounds legitimate ... A recent survey found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it.

Be very careful who you marry! Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair or red. My father fell in love with her, and soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life. My daughter was my mother, for she was my father’s wife. To complicate the matters worse, although it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad, And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother To the widow’s grown-up daughter who, of course, was my stepmother. Father’s wife then had a son, who kept them on the run, And he became my grandson, for he was my daughter’s son. My wife is now my mother’s mother and it makes me blue, Because, although she is my wife, she’s my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild, And everytime I think of it, it simply drives me wild. For now I have become the strangest case we’ve ever had – As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandad!
