hey don’t make honey, and their stings can hurt like hell! So what really is the point of wasps? We’ve all been in the situation when an afternoon in a beer garden, or family barbecue has been ruined by these demonic pests. But do they actually deserve the fearsome reputation that their looks and aggression have earned them? Is there more than meets the eye to these perennial summer party poopers? Wasps love easy food such as over ripe fruit and your fizzy drinks. Towards the end of their brief lives, their hunger drives them to search for easy sugar at exactly the time when we are more likely to be using our gardens and outdoor spaces for eating sweet things. The timing couldn’t be better for them or worse for us. So why are those who panic and try to swat them away more likely to be stung than those who remain calm? Well the problem is that these

workers have their own pheromone, which helps protect the nest from attack earlier in the year, and that’s essentially a chemical rallying cry to other workers that the nest is under attack. So when you swat that annoying wasp and it feels under attack, that rallying cry will go out. Suddenly it all kicks off, and loads more wasps will start arriving in aggressive ‘red-mist’ mode, fired up and ready to defend their nest. This is why the best advice is to stay calm. What’s the point of wasps? Without them playing their role as predators, our planet would be overrun by even more damaging insects such as aphids, ants and caterpillars. So, who’d have thought. The humble wasp, saviour of the planet. Congratulations to Robert from Great Corby who found Bear and Emma who found all the Winstons hidden in the magazine.

hen the Carlisle Ship Canal opened in 1823 the outlet to the Solway at Fishers Cross was re-named Port Carlisle. The Canal company developed this new village by building houses to let or buy, and a hotel for passengers in transit as well as visitors. The better – off in Carlisle soon began to use it at weekends as a refuge from the smoke of the city. They came to walk along the coast and enjoy the salty air. Soon extra attractions began to appear such as tennis courts and a bowling green but there was one thing missing; salt water baths, essential for the health of the Georgian gentry. Then in 1844 the Victoria Baths building, was constructed using money raised from the issue of five hundred £1 shares. Apparently inflation did not have much effect on its value over the years, because the father of the present owner, Roger Brough, bought the building for £540 in 1944; one hundred years after its construction. The baths further enhanced the resort image of the village, which could be visited to partake of the sea air and healthy salt water baths. The Carlisle Journal carried the following report:- “BATHS AT PORT CARLISLE --The excellent salt water hot and cold baths, recently erected at Port Carlisle by a Joint Stock Company, are now in full operation, and will be found a great accommodation to the public, and a source of general attraction to the port.”

Mrs Gordon’s Boil & Bake Cake

A

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

re you an early bird or a night owl? Most of us are one or the other. For me, I am most definitely an early bird. Come evenings I am fit for nothing and can’t be motivated to do a thing. And despite looking forward to the lighter nights even these don’t really help me. For example, I recently arranged to have some family and friends over on a Sunday afternoon for afternoon tea. In readiness I wanted to bake a few cakes the day before. That day, however, I had something on, but would be home late afternoon so I still had all evening to bake. I think deep down I knew that that was never going to happen, and it didn’t. Knowing that I was going to be out on the Sunday morning from about 9am until noon, the only time I would be able to bake would be early on so I set my alarm for 5.30am to get up then. Did this bother me at all? Not one bit. I absolutely love mornings and can get so much more done. I must say, however, that I am not sure how or when this turn of events came about because when I was younger I could hardly get up before noon. When I was 15 I kept a diary for a year, the only diary I ever made and it makes for quite hilarious reading.

A general theme runs throughout, especially at weekends and during holidays; I quote ‘got up at 12 noon today’ or ‘got up at 1pm today’. How times have changed. Give me mornings over evenings any time these days. Going back to my afternoon tea and sticking with a cake theme, I was once given a couple of recipes by an aunty of mine. Old recipes are the best recipes especially when it comes to cakes. One was for a very moist gingerbread, but the one I am going to share with you is a fruit cake which is delicious, and the longer you leave it the better it gets. It is called ‘Mrs Gordon’s Boil and Bake Cake’. Place 350g mixed dried fruit, 110g margarine, 110g brown sugar and 150ml water in a pan and bring the mixture to simmering point. Simmer for 20 minutes’, stirring several times to prevent sticking, keep watching! Allow to cool. When cool add 225g sifted SR flour, 1 level teaspoon mixed spice and 2 beaten

eggs. Mix thoroughly and pour into 7” greased and lined cake tin and decorate with cherries and walnuts. Bake in centre of oven for 30 minutes at 170°, then reduce heat to 150° and bake for a further hour. Cover with baking parchment part way through to avoid drying out the cherries and walnuts. Check with skewer to make sure it is cooked through. If not pop back in oven and check regularly. To be enjoyed with a nice cup of tea.

FRUITCAKE DATES BACK TO AT LEAST ROMAN TIMES The Romans mixed pine nuts, barley mash, pomegranate seeds, raisins and honeyed wine and shaped it into a cake they called “satura.” Fittingly, the word satire—a literary device the Romans invented—is derived from the cake: a mix of many ingredients both sour and sweet.

Sigala Interview Paloma Faith has played Carlisle Racecourse before, your song ‘Lullaby’ with her was a huge radio hit, how did you meet and did you think that would be the massive radio hit that it was?

You never really know how a song is going to do but I’ve always really loved that song. It made sense for Paloma to do it, she just had a baby at the time and the song was called Lullaby so it was great timing for her. She’s somebody that I love and have wanted to work with for ages because of her amazing personality and also her super unique voice.

Sigala’s summer influenced hits will surely see Carlisle set for a party like no other when his acclaimed full live band headlines on Saturday 6th July.

You will be bringing a live band along with you to the Carlisle show, how much fun is it doing

E: design@samhindmoor.co.uk

It’s a lot of fun. There’s so much energy on stage since there’s loads of people, everyone’s really into the music and the musicianship is amazing. It’s really nice for me to be able to feed off other people on the stage; I come from playing in bands when I was a teenager so it’s always been my dream to have my own band so I’ll be absolutely loving it. Have you ever visited Carlisle or Cumbria before, Lake District, etc?

I’ve been to the Lake District a few times. I’ve been all over the country, I’m not sure there’s anywhere I haven’t been at the moment. It’s beautiful up that way; I’ve had a few holidays at the Lake District. It’s a lovely place. We are very close to the Scottish border and a good crowd always comes to the event, what are your thoughts on the Scottish crowd?

I love Scottish crowds; I think they’re some of the best. Their energy is unreal and they’re always so up for it which is great for me because I feed off that energy so it’s always nice when you have a crowd like that. What can fans expect in terms of a show?

fter a long lay-off due to back problems, I undertook my first walk since September. Blencathra is a fabulous mountain, although rather one-sided in its visual appeal. Happily this is the side that most people see, unless they happen to be on Skiddaw, from where it might appear a dull lump. Approach the fell from the East or indeed from the South of the district and it certainly makes its presence felteither as a succession of ridges, or as a huge mountain wall, with an undulating top high in the sky. I had intended to scale it via Halls Fell ridge, the central one on the South face that connects straight to the summit; an airy climb above profound chasms on either side. In the event the lay by alongside the A66 was full, so I opted instead for a tucked-away start above the hamlet of Scales, to the East. This is known as Mousthwaite Comb. Once out of the comb, a simple rising left to right path following the bowl, the ground levels out high above the Glenderamackin River, with the main body of Blencathra rising ahead, the mighty Sharp Edge particularly prominent. I spotted a man with a border collie in the distance, and wondered if it might be a pal of mine, Iain Turner, a guy I used to work with 25 years ago. It wasn’t- but Iain was on the fell with his partner Lesley and dog Meg, higher up approaching the summit. In a series of texts I managed to persuade them to meet me at Scales Tarn. It was a glorious morning, the early spring temperatures breaking all records, and the tarn sparkled and lapped its gravelly shore. After a brief chat they set off down, and I continued to the Edge, its serrated top high above to the right. I talked to a few people as the terrain narrowed into a spiky arête, a man who was making a first attempt, another who was chickening out and a runner who breezed past me in vest and shorts, looking for all the world as if he were having a

We are proud to be an independent, Carlisle based, family run publication

sprint through a park. The wind picked up and gave me cause for concern at times, balance is key on Sharp Edge and sudden gusts can be a bit alarming. Happily it was bone-dry. My tripod that I carry with video camera atop was a hindrance, three points of contact being strongly advisable up there. It is shorter, steeper and indeed sharper than Striding Edge on Helvellyn. There is a easier route below and to the right but at one point (the worst and most precarious section) there is no escaping the combination of a flattish slab issuing you down onto an apex of rock, this is known as the posting box or the bad step. Many walkers’ nerves are shredded here. I sat above it, to recover my breathing and take in the view. You are now high above the circular tarn way down on the right with a tremendous vista out towards Penrith. A man with two children was following. The young blond boy was loving the experience, the elder dark-haired one was pronouncing it “stupid”. He pointed up at me sitting on my lofty perch “...and he’s stupid too!” he exclaimed. They turned back shortly afterwards, a wise move I would have thought. Up Foule Crag, again taking great care, the busy sections of rock highly polished. I made the summit and sat out of the wind eating my lunch, watching the ravens perform their aerial aerobatics. My back had held out! www.village-link.co.uk

TREES & SHRUBS local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS you’re not going to have an opportunity to plant it within a few days, we’d suggest waiting before you buy it. Your plant might survive longer if you water it but you won’t be giving it the best start. Before planting your new plant, give it a soak while you dig the hole you want to plant it in. Your hole should be just deep enough that all the roots will be underground and the stem or trunk is above ground. Depending on the room you have available, you can make your hole up to three times as wide as the root system, to ensure the tree is not trying to establish itself in compacted soil.

• Bare-rooted • Containerised (that is, in a pot) • Root-balled (usually having been root-pruned and wrapped in fabric) At this time of year, bare rooted plants are starting to become available to buy or pre-order. They will usually be cheaper than the other options and provide the opportunity to put plants in the ground outside of their growing season, when they will be less distressed. If we have a long winter, bare-root season can extend to early April but we’d suggest not leaving it as late as that. Your bare-root plant is likely to be between one and three years old. It should be wrapped in polythene or some other medium to prevent the roots drying out. Select a plant that has an even spread of root growth and which looks fairly well developed. Your plant will need planting as soon as possible to prevent it drying out and to get it established quickly. If you know

Drought stress is common with newly planted trees and shrubs so make sure it doesn’t dry out during its first few years. It also helps to keep the area weeded, so it’s not competing with other plants, and you might want to fertilise or mulch the area during the winter to help it establish. (Don’t mulch right up to the trunk as that may cause rot). Finally, if you’re thinking about a new tree but aren’t sure what to choose, we like the Woodland Trust’s guide to native trees.

Remove any wrappings from the roots and, if they are knotted or bound up, tease them out. Place the plant in the hole, supporting it at the correct height for the soil level, and refill around it, being careful to ensure you don’t leave air pockets. If it’s large enough or in an exposed position, think about adding a stake or support while it establishes itself. If your

trained in beauty and holistic therapy in 2006/2007 and after training worked in one of Cumbria’s top spas training in some of the worlds leading brands. I took a break from the industry after having my second child but in 2015 I decided to return to my passion. I invested in further training to deepen my knowledge and learn new skills providing me with all the up to date information. I worked extremely hard and provided hundreds of case studies in order to gain another two Level 3 qualifications, one for Reflexology and one for Swedish Massage, and also the most recent skill to my career, a diploma in KORE therapy. Following this, in 2018 I decided to set up Holistica and I’m gradually spreading the word about what I do and already have a great client base. At Holistica I offer predominantly holistic therapies but I do offer some beauty treatments. The treatments I offer are Swedish massage, reflexology, holistic facials, kore therapy, cupping, anmo fu, manicures/pedicures using CND and

Clair Jones (Holistica Health & Well-being) offers a range of holistic and beauty treatments with a kind, caring and compassionate approach.

• Swedish Massage • Reflexology • Holistic Facials • KORE Therapy • Cupping • Anmo Fu • Manicures & Pedicures • Lash lift & tint important to look after our own health and well-being. My treatments all include a thorough consultation where I talk with my clients about the reason they have chosen to come and how they are being affected or what they wish to get from their treatment. From this I take in many factors and using my knowledge and experience I work with my clients to help achieve optimum health and well-being. My aim is to treat people as a whole and not just a symptom and it is important to me that my clients feel comfortable and at ease. I want the experience at Holistica to make people feel like they have nothing else to think about in that time and to solely relax and unwind within a calm and secure space and most importantly to let me take care of them. I would love for Holistica to encourage people to try alternative therapies and I always welcome enquiries, even just an initial chat over the phone before committing to any appointment. It’s a big thing to find the right therapist you can trust and build a relationship with. My clients can rest assure that I have their very best interests at heart and that I love what I do. I am always learning to further my knowledge and looking to expand my skills so I can offer the very best in treatments. I am fully insured and a member with the FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists) I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this article and if you would ever like to try any of the therapies I offer I’d like to offer £5 off your first visit to Holistica, just quote ‘village link’ when booking.
