t is a widely accepted adage that, “The older you get, the faster time seems to go.” But why should aging have this effect? After all, there is the parallel adage that, “Time flies when you are having fun.” But as we age, time flies whether we are having fun or not. A psychologist wrote: “As we age, time seems to speed up because adulthood is accompanied by fewer and fewer memorable events. When the passage of time is measured by “firsts” (first kiss, first day of school, first family holiday), the lack of new experiences in adulthood causes the days and weeks [to] smooth themselves out… and the years grow hollow and collapse”. Hollow? Collapse! I wonder myself if it’s during the “raising young kids” years that times passes the quickest. It always appears to be the time I’m about to karate chop my childs stiff-as-a-board body into her car seat that an old dear will sidle up to me and say “Enjoy it while they’re little! It goes by so fast!” My smile says “I want to strangle you” only because I am only too aware how fast my children are growing up and I hate it. It must happen at night as I don’t see them

growing during the day. So I guess we need to reflect on the memorable things that have happened this year. The summer has been fantastic; seaside trips and family meals outside - oh yes, and wasps! Mind you, after the purchase of a mosquito net, we did manage a little al fresco dining (before that, it was more a ‘arms flapping and chronic indigestion’ affair than a relaxing outdoor dining experience). Thank you to all our readers who entered the competitions in the last issue, the response was incredible! Congratulations to David Milligan who won tickets to the Reel Rock film at Rheged; Mrs Mary Hatcher on winning the Crossword Competition; and Eve who found Bear in Scotby Park. Carlisle’s Past
Mary Jane Longstaff – a life-long love affair with snails
I
have recently published ‘Cumbrian Ancestors Unwrapped’, a richly illustrated book for Dennis Donald which tells the stories of Dennis’ Ancestors in Northern Cumbria since the 1630’s. The 18 chapters in the book feature characters such as George Moore of Wigton (Philanthropist and millionaire), William Henry Gibson (fraudster and survivor, transported to Australia) and Mary Jane Longstaff (nee Donald) 1855-1935 (a life-long love affair with snails). Here, I give a brief synopsis of her story. Mary was the daughter of Matthewman, principal partner in the Carlisle cotton enterprise of Donald Brothers. She devoted her entire life to the study of snails, land and freshwater snails, living and fossil. She was brilliant in her field and delightfully eccentric. Behind her childhood home (Albert Villa), high on Stanwix Bank, lay an area of land which had long lain undisturbed. Jane was an acutely observant little girl, and here was a pocket paradise which she could explore in solitude and safety. Following her education in London, Jane enrolled on a course at the Carlisle School of Art. There she developed the artistic skills needed to illustrate her own papers which were published as Gasteropoda Recent and Fossil. Jane devoted herself to a tiny corner of the 65,000 species classified as Gastropods. She was totally absorbed. By the time Jane was 27, she had produced a comprehensive survey of the land and freshwater snails of Cumberland, presenting a paper to the Cumberland Association for the Advancement of Literature and Science in 1882. This, of course, was read for her by a man! Despite her slow ascendancy as

a scientist, it would be a long while before women were accepted as equal to men. She became a member of the Geologists’ Association in 1883; a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1906, and was one of the first group of ladies to be accepted as Fellows of the Geological Society of London in 1919. Jane travelled all over the county by train, horse and the family gig. Her meticulous handwritten notes tell of the discovery of fine specimens of Planorbis on dead leaves at Corby. Triumphantly she recorded an Arion at 3,192 feet near the summit of Ben Lomond. A Limax wandered into the cellar of Albert Villa, under her very nose. A rare Helix gave itself up at Furness Abbey. In all, Jane recorded 75 species in Cumberland, 7 in Westmorland, and an appendix to her work carried details of a further 20 or so. In 1885 Jane was strongly influenced by John George Goodchild of the Geological Survey who turned her attention to the fossilised inhabitants of the carboniferous period. There followed the publication of twenty papers on these long-dead wanderers whom she first discovered around Penton and Mosedale. In 1898 the prestigious Murchison Award was granted to Jane Donald. In later life, after her marriage, she travelled widely, working as enthusiastically as ever, publishing, at the age of 78, ‘British Carboniferous Loxionematidae with Descriptions of New Forms’.

alking about what would happen if our faculties ever deserted us is not an easy subject, but the fact of the matter is that one in three over-65s develop dementia. If that were to happen you can’t just assume that the people you trust can walk into a bank and access your money, even to pay for your care. Unless you have got a Power of Attorney already, loved ones need to apply through the Court, which can be a lengthy process and costly. A Lasting Power of Attorney (which replaced the old Enduring Power of Attorney) is a legal document whereby you (while you still have mental capacity) can nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your affairs if you ever lost capacity.
Megan Wilkinson, Solicitor
This doesn’t mean that you are losing control, you are just planning ahead and can chose whether it can be used before, or only if, you lose mental capacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney, one for finance and property, and the other for health and welfare. Everyone should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney and here at Butterworths we can guide you through the paperwork and make the undertaking a lot less daunting. Our fees are £350 plus VAT for a single Lasting Power of Attorney and £500 plus VAT for a married couple. If you bring the attached voucher with you we will give you a 10% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney.
Cut out this voucher and bring it with you to receive a 10% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney (only). Valid until 31st January 2015.

Protection
MONEY
for you and your family
by Mike Turney [Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society] Life and health insurance protection is the underpin of most good financial planning. These types of insurance can ensure that, if the worst should happen, the right amount of money will reach the right hands at the right time.
L
ife insurance puts money in the hands of those who need it when a person dies. There are many reasons why this money might be needed, including paying off a mortgage (or other loan) if a borrower dies, protecting a family against the early death of a spouse, partner or parent (particularly important for people with financial responsibility for children), paying inheritance tax (IHT) or protecting a business against the financial consequences of the loss of its owner or a key employee. The life assurance needed to cover a loan is relatively simple to assess. You need enough insurance for the amount of the loan and the cover should last for the time that the loan is outstanding. If you pay off some of the loan, you should be able to reduce the amount of cover earmarked for this purpose. But most people also need insurance cover to replace their income if they were to die. The same principles apply but the calculations are a little more complicated. For example, you decide you need life assurance cover to provide the school fees for a child who is now five and will probably be in school until she is 18. You should therefore first quantify the total amount of school fees that you would have to pay over the period and take out cover of this amount for the next 13 years. The approach to insuring other needs is roughly the same. For example, you could calculate how much your family would need to cover the general household and other expenses and how long they would need the funds. You can arrange for life cover to pay out a series of annual amounts over a set period, which is a simple approach to replacing an annual
income. But most life cover pays out a lump sum. If you want a lump sum to provide £1,000 a year for 10 years, you would need life cover of about £10,000; if the income were needed for 20 years, you may need an amount slightly less than £20,000 as the invested sum may produce some growth or income. It’s sometimes hard to work out how much life cover you would require overall for your family, because of the difficulties of assessing your family’s needs after one or both parents have died. Current levels of expenditure provide a good starting point for making these estimates, and then you would have to consider the other costs that might be involved, like childcare. It can be especially difficult to assess the potential financial impact of the death of a parent who spends most of their time looking after children and the household. A good starting point is to estimate the costs of buying in these services. The best way to ensure that the proceeds of a life policy are
there are over 11 million people with a limiting long term illness, impairment or disability and 1 in 7 working age adults suffer from a disability paid to the people you intend to benefit is usually to arrange for the policy to be in a trust. The most appropriate type of trust is generally one that gives the trustees discretion or flexibility about how they distribute the benefits, but it’s a good idea to get advice about this. If you die, the policy proceeds will be paid to the trustees and then the beneficiaries - not into your estate. This arrangement should save inheritance tax and speed up the payment to the beneficiaries.
High quality glossy print brings out the best in your adverts
By contrast, the purpose of health insurance is to provide some money if you fall seriously ill or have an accident, potentially affecting you for many years. In this case, you would probably stop earning although your financial needs might well be greater than ever. The state benefits you would receive would be relatively low and unlikely to provide sufficient income to meet your needs, especially if you have substantial rent or mortgage payments to make. You might also need capital, for example to make adaptations to your home or to pay off loans or other liabilities. Virtually everyone who is working needs some kind of health insurance to provide financial protection if their earnings are affected by serious illness or disability. Even if you have no financial dependants, there’s a very strong chance that you will need health insurance. Income protection – sometimes called permanent health insurance – pays a weekly or monthly income if you cannot work because of illness or disability. You may think you don’t need to worry about this kind of cover, but the fact is that, in the UK, there are over 11 million people with a limiting long term illness, impairment or disability and 1 in 7 working age adults suffer from a disability (Taxbriefs, May 2014). Some employers provide income protection insurance, but a very large number do not. It’s worth specifically checking the position with your employer. Income protection can appear relatively expensive, but can be very valuable if you fall seriously ill. It is normally advisable for income protection insurance to be inflation-protected in two main ways. You should be able to increase the level of cover from time to time regardless of your state of health, or the cover should increase automatically in line with inflation or some fixed percentage. But it’s also important to make sure that the benefit payments themselves keep pace
with inflation otherwise, if the benefit payments never increased after you fell ill and could not work, their real value would be gradually eroded over the years. Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed as suffering from a specified illness. The advantage of critical illness insurance is the benefit is paid shortly after diagnosis of the illness, without any significant delay – unlike the waiting period of income protection. It’s also in the form of a lump sum that can allow you to make rapid adjustments to your lifestyle and pay off loans. People often take out critical illness insurance to cover a mortgage or other loan. Because you are more likely to have a critical illness than die, it’s more expensive than life insurance, but this reflects the likelihood of needing to claim on the policy. The final area to consider is medical insurance. These are policies that help you to afford the cost of private medical treatment. Private medical insurance (PMI) pays for private health treatment, whereas health cash plans pay for everyday health costs, typically 75% – 100% of costs for dentistry, optical and consultation costs, plus a small sum for each day spent in hospital. Insurers are constantly looking at new ways to meet people’s needs, such as through life insurance that includes critical illness and/or income protection insurance, which may be cheaper. It’s important to look at your options and seek the assistance of a trusted advisor.

The quality is now so good it really is very hard to tell genuine leather from the stylish man made practical product. Synthetics have come a long way. They offer greater choice in terms of colour, texture, practical daily care…..no daily nourishing after every wear and also you don’t need to worry quite so much when

I PEARL OF WISDOM
The benefits of red wine have been widely publicised in recent years, with most scientists agreeing that, when drunk in moderation, it may help protect the heart, prevent blood clots and strokes, and even ward off certain cancers including colon and prostate. A glass of red wine contains high amounts of natural polyphenols or antioxidants which not only help our cells fight against free radical damage but also increase our levels of ‘good’ cholesterol. Why not enjoy a glass of delicious mulled wine. Adding spices such as cinnamon, cloves and star anise also boosts our antioxidant levels.

t is that time of year again, as the nights start to draw in, the board games come out. I played a couple of new games recently which were good fun. ‘Family Fortunes’ was one and ‘Catchphrase’ was the other, although in all honesty no one could be bothered to read the instructions on the latter so we just held up the cards and everyone tried to guess the phrase. There is one game, however, that you will never get me to play no matter what. Monopoly. In fact I would go so far as to say, I hate the game. There are two main reasons for this: 1. It lasts for days (OK hours, but it feels like days) and 2. Memories of playing the game with my brother who always had to win because life wasn’t worth living if he didn’t. It was just easier to give in and let him have Mayfair and Park Lane than suffer the seeming injustice of him not having them! I apologise
to all you monopoly lovers out there but the damage has been done and I can’t ever see me changing my mind. I once made mulled wine for a party, but quite frankly it was awful and most of it ended up down the sink. I therefore tried a few recipes and this one came out top. Put 115g sugar, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2in piece fresh ginger peeled and sliced, about 12 cloves and the zest of one orange, in a pan and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down and simmer slowly until it is a bit syrupy, about 15-20 minutes. Add two pints of claret and heat through but do not boil. Sieve before serving. You can add some slices of orange to serve but I like it as it is, less is more in my opinion.

Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and stir for 15 – 20 minutes, until the butter has melted and it coates the back of a wooded spoon. Transfer the curd to a heatproof jug and pour into clean warm jars. Seal while hot. Turn the jars upside down for 2 minutes, invert and leave to cool then put in fridge. O
ne dictionary definition of maturity is “taking a long-run view rather than acting impulsively”and I guess that sums up the new CLA45 AMG. You see, last year, I had a blast test driving the A45 AMG which is a thoroughly brilliant hot hatch with its 4 cylinder turbocharged engine and 4 wheel drive system. This car is, well, essentially the same car, just the older maturer brother. Inside the cabin you get the same high quality fit and finish you would expect from Mercedes with the very cool AMG trimming. With deep sides and a beautifully sculpted back, the electricallyadjustable heated front seats are shaped and padded just right.

I suppose it’s a little more refined. You still feel like a boy racer; the engine does make you chuckle when you let off the throttle and you hear all the cool backfiring noises; but you don’t need to wear your jeans trailing on the floor with your undies showing anymore - you’ve matured into your sport coat and straight leg jeans, simple dress shirt and casual loafer. The CLA45, just like the A45, will hit 62mph from rest in a claimed 4.6sec thanks in part to its ‘race start’ launch control system, and it’ll reach the same 155mph limited top speed, having hit 100mph in approximately
hatchback on the move. Which is fair enough in theory, even if the reality seems to be 10 per cent less zing pretty much everywhere. So, when is a hot hatch not a hot hatch? When it’s a Mercedes CLA45 AMG.

HEALTH
Brain Gender I
Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland
t has long been a suspicion of mine. Now I know for sure. Always ready to absorb new research, I watched, with interest, the programme Horizon shown on BBC last evening. Billed, ‘Is your brain male or female?’. They were introducing their findings. For purposes that will become clear, before I begin, I am going to ask you, dear readers, to sit down for a moment and relax. Now, clasp your hands together so your fingers entwine. Take a look at your thumbs. Which one is on the top - left one or the right? If you are a man, the odds are it will be the left; if you are a women, it is more likely to be the right. Me? Left! Every time. It is actually very awkward to try to switch. This cannot be faked.
Do you have a mainly male or firmly female brain? It doesn’t stop there. I go on to learn that questioned whether it is males who endure pain best it was commonly regarded that females are the more likely to tolerate pain. The test. The cold water immersion test (my previous missive); used because it causes no long term ill effects, if done for a short time. They don’t say what happens if you stay there for any length of time! I do this on regular basis - immersing myself in ice cold water and I stay there. You will have to refer back for my reasons. It was found that males almost always outlasted females in this test. When you submerge your body into water that is below about 3 degrees Celsius, your pain receptors overwhelm your temperature receptors so you are no longer able to tell if the water is hot or freezing. The point to all of this? Well, it seems until now most basic pain research has been carried out on the male of the species. That sounds fair enough, on the basis that we are all the same. This is proving to be incorrect. As science moves forward there is a good chance your prescription could be tailored to suit your gender. They conclude that most females are empathisers and males systemisers. Women empathise and men systemise. I systemise. WINTER CITIES A
Explore EUROPEAN CITIES WITH DAWSON & SANDERSON
utumn and Winter can be great times to explore and enjoy European cities, OK it may be a little chillier than we would like but the crowds have dissipated leaving you free to visit museums and discover the sights in peace. There are also some great offers with it being low season so you can grab yourself a bargain and have more spending money. Why not get into the Christmas spirit with a visit to one of the many European Christmas Markets such as Munich, Prague and Vienna to name but a few. Escape the stress and strains of the UK high street and instead marvel at snow swept landscapes, stroll the maze of wooden stalls lit with twinkling fairy lights and soak up the atmosphere of these fabulous winter wonderlands. PRAGUE Prague is very pretty in Autumn with the beautiful Autumnal colours making it extremely picturesque. Come winter the city turns into a magical wonderland with Christmas markets on offer and some great coffee houses to warm up in. Christmas Markets: 29 November - 11 January BUDAPEST With the long hot summers gone, the city becomes more peaceful and enjoyable to walk around. There are
Rome
a number of festivals to enjoy and of course the amazing Christmas Markets to put you in the festive mood. Christmas Markets 29 November - 31 December PARIS The city still has a magical charm and never disappoints. However, If you’re thinking of booking a trip to
I don’t think there is a bad time to visit Rome a s there is plenty on offer throughout the whole year Paris in the Springtime...think again! You’ll be joining thousands of other travellers in search of the idyllic Paris encountered in Hollywood films and iconic photos. Why not treat the kids and enjoy Christmas celebrations with your favourite Disney Characters. Disney celebrations at the Magic Kingdom begin on
9 November - 7 January with various parades, a Dreams of Christmas parade, Mickey’s Winter Wonderland and Belle Magical Winter Wonderland. Disney can even make it snow as you meander down Mainstreet. ROME There are lots of reasons to visit Rome in the winter but the main ones are that the crowds almost disappear and the hotel prices are cheaper. Personally I don’t think there is a bad time to visit Rome as there is plenty on offer throughout the whole year. Fiera di Natale is the Christmas Market held in Piazza Navona and is the place to go for Christmas toys and trinkets. It also has a Mary Poppins style Merry Go Round great for kids and grown ups!! AMSTERDAM Amsterdam has so much to offer and is just a hop, skip and a jump across the channel. Talk a brisk walk along the canals or enjoy a bike ride. With a vast array of museums, bars and restaurants and even if the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse, there is still lots to keep you entertained. Amsterdam flight and accommodation prices are at their lowest in winter (with the exception of peak holiday dates) and while you will want to book ahead for December, rooms are plentiful in January and February.

Fast Metabolisms

I
Life and the occasional gardening tip from garden editor jason hindmoor
’ve been mainly watching a lot of diet programmes on TV recently. Specifically the one where the good looking guy from America comes over to kill our larger people by making them wear spandex and roll tyres up and down the beach. These diets always start off well enough and the people lose 2 stone in the first week, which is probably just wind anyway. But by the end of twelve weeks the American guy is back on his webcam suggesting the large person may have lost focus or lost sight of their goals. The participants then appear on their webcam, partially obscured by a bucket of KFC and reply that they’ve ate nothing but twigs and rocket for 12 weeks and their weight refuses to drop any further. They then explain to him that they’ve decided that their family has always been big boned and being 28 stone and 4ft 6 is probably perfectly healthy for

them. Anyway I was watching one of these shows the other day when I made a ground breaking scientific breakthrough. It occurred to me that before I was married I had an office job and lived pretty much exclusively

on Newcastle Brown Ale and doner kebabs. However now I have a very physical job and a calorie intake that would make a rabbit leave home and yet I’m 2 stones heavier. The unmistakable conclusion to all of this is that despite all these Horizon and Panarama programmes about sugar and salt, fat and alcohol, obesity is not solely caused by what we eat but the problem is actually with our metabolism. You see, I’m sure I used to have a fast metabolism in my teenage years but I think it left with my hair follicles sometime around 1999. So I decided to research the subject exhaustively and it turns out that our metabolisms slow down with age but the good news is that it has been proven that people with fast metabolisms fidget – and this is how they burn off calories. This makes perfect sense, can you ever remember seeing a larger person fidget? Me neither, its always skinny people who fidget. So I’m working on my new book ‘Fidget not Fitness’ which dispels the myths that diets and the gym are the ways to lose weight and suggests a numbers of ways to increase your levels of fidgeting. These include asking boring people about their health, watching Newsnight, studying accountancy or attending Council or School Board meetings. Fidget. Its the way forward.

If you haven’t broken the soil up in the months before winter, don’t try to do it now as the frost will make it very difficult. The soil will also likely be saturated after the rain and won’t benefit from more air being squashed out of it by treading and compaction. The best guideline for the winter season is to refrain from treading on the ground as much as possible and to tread lightly when you do have to do any work. This is the time to complete the winter pruning of fruit trees, deciduous hedges, roses and shrubs. Wisterias will benefit from a late prune - you want two or three buds left on the current season’s growth It’s important to remove any fallen branches, sticks and debris from beds, paths and lawns. Remember also to clear away any leaves or cuttings to ensure they don’t cause damp problems to any underlying plants. Unwanted shrubs can be disposed of and space cleared in the garden for the next season.

he number of different driveway materials that you can choose from is huge. Here are some pointers that will help you to pick the best driveway for your home. If you live on an estate where the houses share a similar look, then replacing or installing a driveway in a completely different material could make your house less saleable. If you have a significant gradient to your driveway, then concrete is not going to be easy to lay, tarmac would be significantly better but Gravel would be a waste of time. Small to medium blocks would be the best option. If your area is prone to flooding, then permeable materials are best for your driveway, which are usually cellular structures. The honeycomb structure supports the weight of the vehicle but water can escape through the holes. Here at Drive Revive, we offer a free no obligation quotation advice and design service. We also guarantee installation within 6/8 weeks of your order. We undertake a site survey before any work commences. Our fitters have been in the trade for many years and are very experienced. here’s a definite chill in the air and winter feels like it’s just around the corner. This change in weather can cause damage to the skin’s protective outer layer by stripping away the vital lipids in between the skin cells, leaving gaps in the natural protective barrier. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It’s a living part of your body that defends against environmental pollutants and extreme temperatures, as well as helping to eliminate toxins from the body. It’s continually protecting and renewing itself. To put it simply, it keeps the good stuff in and the bad stuff out! So it’s important to take action now, to protect your skin from these damaging effects of cold weather and central heating . Your skin will need different nutrients in winter to what it needs in the warmer months, so it’s important to change your products in these colder months to keep your skin in top form.

Here are some winter skin saving tips: • Change your foaming cleanser to a soothing gel/cream to replenish any lost lipids and soothe away sensitivity, like Dermalogica’s Ultracalming cleanser • Eliminate flaky or dull skin cells with Daily Microfoliant or Daily Resufacer to brighten and smooth skin, whilst hydrating at the same time. • Change to a more emollient type of moisturiser, such as Super Rich Repair, for extra protection and nourishment.
Why not book in for a free Facemap Skin Analysis and give your skin the winter M.O.T it’s waiting for.
Every issue is available online and free to read
Here at Salon Elysee, we are proud to have 3 therapists to have achieved Dermalogica’s highest award, Expert Status (at the time of writing, there are only 5 in total in the whole of Carlisle) so we are always happy to help with any skin queries you may have.

CYCLING
FAT
but not heavy? CYCLING TIPS AND ADVICE FROM SPORT EDITOR GARY DICKSON
I
s it possible to conceive a new type of bike that is likely to become very popular, perhaps even as big as BMX? You might have thought no, but then along comes the immensely whacky FAT BIKE! Very different, and as soon as you see it your heart shouts “I want a go”. That’s exactly what happened when the first FAT BIKE arrived at Scotby Cycles. This eye catcher looks awesome, however just looking cool isn’t its only talent, it has multi-purpose built into the design and it all centres around those big fat tyres. With huge tyres you might think this new bike will be heavy in weight and heavy to ride, but surprisingly it’s not heavy and it rides well. Fat tyres add a new dimension to suspension.
Have you tried to ride across a soggy field and found your wheels sinking, in snow and lacked grip, on sand and your wheels dug in, on a loose surface when there’s not enough grip, jump a kerb…missed and buckled your wheel? The FAT BIKE is light, agile, and handles just like a great mountain bike should. It gives you more places and more seasons to ride. Now’s the time to fatten up! World leaders TREK, Specialized and Surly, etc have created great excitement with their own individual FAT BIKE designs. If you want to see what all the fuss is about visit Scotby Cycles and check it out yourself. Scotby Cycles, Church St (opp. McVities), Caldewgate, Carlisle Tel: 01228 546931
