Welcome
A
t the time of writing this Carlisle, yet again, is completely gridlocked. I can’t see things improving either in the run up to the busiest time of the year for trips into town. So, rather than waste the time, here are some suggestions for keeping yourselves amused while you sit in the endless jams around our great city. Make a list. My wife is a lover of a good list and this is her number one time for making another. Make a note of all the things that you have to finish off by the end of the day, or maybe the week, or focus on the things that you forgot to do. This will make your task easier, and ensure that you don’t forget anything. Clean the car. Now is a good time to gather all the door pocket debris, the wrappers, the half eaten Greggs sausage roll, hair bands – put it aside so that you can throw it out later. Catch up on your reading. Okay, I don’t mean reading an actual book, but try an Audio Book. I am sure you have all said, I wish I had more time to read and guess what, this time stuck in a mess of cars makes it so you do. Call a friend or someone in your family. Let us not forget that our phones can be used for more than just texting and playing Candy Crush. Pass the time by calling that friend you haven’t seen for ages or family member to catch up and have a laugh! Hands-free of course! Enjoy this last issue of 2019. Many thanks to everyone for all their support again this year – our delivery people, our advertisers and thanks to you our dear reader. Congratulations to our winners – Olivia and Will, we hope you enjoy your prizes! See you next year.

DENTON HOLME MILL RACE written by david ramshaw
Millrace

arlisle’s Textile Industry began in the 1700’s on the banks of the River Caldew from family weavers working at home, to small weaving shops, to six-storey factories. Today there is not much textile manufacturing going on. Only three manufacturers, Linton Tweeds, Stead McAlpin and Lappet (originally Morton Sundour – a major textile firm in the city) continue to produce high quality textiles. From medieval times to the early 19th century all of these mills depended on water to power them so a dam must have existed at Holme Head for a

very long time. There are early references to mills which could not have existed without the Denton Holme millrace. From the dam across the River Caldew, a watercourse was cut through Denton Holme and Shaddongate, flowing back into the river at Willow Holme. For years there were only two corn mills on its course, but in the 18th century textile mills rapidly developed along the millrace. When water became less important as a source of power and factories turned to steam, the route of the millrace could be traced by the factory chimneys. The map shows the factories
that used water from the millrace that still flows through Shaddongate. Few industries now use water from the millrace and although minor changes have been made to its course, its future seems assured as it controls the volume of water flowing through the main channel of the river in times of flood. FOOD
JANE’S KITCHEN
T
Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
here is no end of famous chefs and cooks these days, together with endless cookery books and food programmes on our televisions. As with everything, there are those I love and those I am no so keen on. I have to say though that I am always inspired by the programmes I do enjoy, and even go so far as to buy the book if there is one that accompanies the series. Going back a few years, in the days before ‘celebrity chefs’ became the norm; there are a couple of chefs that were part of my childhood. I’d like to first of all mention the ever exuberant Keith Floyd. He was probably one of the first TV chefs, and his programmes are legendary. With his ever present glass of wine in hand he created mayhem whenever he cooked. He could be a bit grumpy, but his nononsense approach to cooking was nonetheless inspiring. If you watch Saturday Kitchen they often show old episodes from his series which are very entertaining to say the least if not a little cringe worthy at times. The other chef I am going to mention is Yesterday I spotted an albino Dalmatian. It was the least I could do for him.
Robert Carrier. We are now going back even further in time. Now I don’t claim to know much about Robert Carrier, but the reason I mention him is because my mum and dad always had his cook book to hand when I was younger, and I grew up on many of his recipes. Apparently he had a TV series in the late 70’s called Carrier’s Kitchen which was based on cooking cards from his Sunday Times article. Remember cooking cards? You have to be a certain age to remember those. Needless to say I collected a few sets! So as homage Don’t you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.
to Robert Carrier I am going to share with you a recipe that I grew up on, and which my mum and I still make to this day. It is called ‘Swiss Steak’. I have never really understood the name behind the recipe, but it is the simplest meal to make using a cheaper cut of beef. Perfect for this time of year too as we head towards winter. Cut 2lb braising steak into large chunks and then season with salt and ground black pepper. Put 4tbsp flour on a dish and coat the steaks with the flour. Next heat 4tbsp olive oil in a thick bottomed casserole dish and sauté one chopped onion until soft and transparent. Add the beef and brown on both sides. Finally add a tin of chopped tomatoes then cover and cook very slowly on top of stove until the meat is tender, approximately 2 hours, adding a little water if necessary. Serve direct from the casserole dish. Goes perfectly with mashed potato and green beans. Real comfort food. Jane ferguson

SPOTLIGHT ON CONTEMPORARY MIXED MEDIA ARTIST, DANIEL IBBOTSON
s a contemporary artist of more than 30 years, Daniel draws on his experience from working as a specialist decorator which affords him many opportunities to collect waste materials such as scraps of wallpaper, dried paint, coloured sawdust and used sandpaper. He continues, “My work reflects my endless fascination for the contours and rhythms of the natural and man-made landscape around me. I create stratified, highly textural artworks by fusing discarded and recycled materials with a variety of mixed media using self-developed techniques. My objective is to convey alternative perspectives of figurative imagery which resonate with the observer but often only emerge when viewed repeatedly over time. All my artworks
contain rhythms derived from personal experiences and pay homage to the disciplines of my past, including my vocations as a professional footballer, dance teacher, specialist decorator and also from being a father to two children. Like the materials I collect for
use at some time in the future, my life experiences and emotional records may have no particular prominence or intent at the time of collection but re-emerge when triggered by my reflective scrutiny of life in the context of the wider landscapes. I especially enjoy translating my art into decorative murals and wall paintings in home and business interiors. Combining traditional decorating materials with techniques developed through my art practice provides me with an opportunity to create larger scale, customer specific pieces which become installations and an integral part of the home or office interior. www.danielibbotson.com

POCKET MONEY Ian Forth and Christine Lloyd run the local branch of The Furness Building Society in Brampton

ith the festive season just around the corner the annual spending spree is in full swing. A typical household spends over £500 extra in December (Source: Bank of England/ knowledgebank) and yet, although
it is known that more is going to be spent, only 28% of households have put money aside throughout the year to cover the cost and 10% will be relying on their credit card to cover the whole cost of Christmas (Source: GoCompare). The pressure to overspend grows year on year and can create much stress for households at a time when we should all be calm, in control and enjoying family time together with fun and

Only 28% of households have put money aside to cover the cost of Christmas laughter. Of course, it is not just adults who love to buy presents and gifts, there is nothing children love more than to buy, wrap, hide and then “sneak” them under the Christmas tree. On Christmas morning watching children open their presents, with their wide eyed, excited expression and joy, is a fabulous experience for all to see. But what about this picture— children getting really excited about what they are going to buy mum, dad and grandparents for Christmas.
Are they listening for clues on what to buy or have they asked you for a Christmas list, just as we do? Now comes the question just like us, how will they pay for it? Are they really keen to do extra chores around the house, get a paper round or start a car washing round? Or do they feel they have no choice but to borrow the money just like so many families do at this time of year? How much better would it be if they had saved a little bit of their pocket money, birthday money and “odd job” money, every week or every month so they can get the gifts they want to buy with their own money, planned for throughout the year. Creating such a habit can start by visiting your friendly and local Furness Building Society. Ian, Christine or Nicola will be on hand to help you open the correct savings account for you. The Furness Building Society has been encouraging savings for over 150 years and has a range of accounts that are designed to help the habit of regular savings both for adults and young savers. TRAVEL GUIDE
I
TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK SHARES TRAVEL IDEAS FOR THE COMING MONTHS
t’s been a turbulent couple of months in the travel industry. In August we saw the failure of Late Rooms and Superbreaks, but the biggest shock of all was late September when Thomas Cook ceased trading. Thomas Cook was the original tour operator offering typical package holidays, with a huge presence on the high street; it had its own airline, and many hotels overseas welcomed thousands of Thomas Cook customers every year. The repercussions of this sad demise will be around for a long time to come. I really felt for every customer, staff member, crew, overseas representatives, whose holidays and livelihoods were suddenly in jeopardy. I’m sure many of you will have been affected. This situation just stresses how important it is to book your holiday with an ATOL-protected company. Now on to cruise holidays, as I promised in the last issue. Whether you are an experienced cruiser, or you are a cruise novice, there is something for everyone out there. Here are some instant positives – you only unpack once, eat great food, whilst seeing lots of different places! It offers great value for money, there is a type of cruise to suit every budget, and you can book up to 2 years in advance, 3 in some cases. If you want to do a round the
“Hurtigruten’s 12 day classic coastal voyage has been described as one of the best voyages in the world” world cruise for 161 days for approx. £45,000, you can do that. If you want a 2 day taster cruise, that’s out there too. There are usually offers on, whether it be for a cabin upgrade, or early booking offers, inclusive drinks packages, or gratuities. It can be bewildering trying to decide where to go, which type of cruise, which cruise line, large or small ship. I have access to just about every itinerary, cruise line, and ship available, whether that’s river or ocean. If you don’t like flying, then consider a no-fly cruise from one of the UK ports. It’s recently been announced that eco-friendly

Hurtigruten will be offering expedition cruising from Dover for their 15 day round trip Northern Lights & Fjords departures in the winter of 2021/22. Their 12 day classic coastal voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back has been described as one of the best voyages in the world. There are cruise lines which are more suitable for families, with things like climbing walls to keep the kids entertained. If you want to see action on a Tall Ship, no problem, I can arrange that for you. If you want to experience ultra luxury with your own private butler, I know which to recommend. Expedition cruising – I’ve got that covered. Travelling on your own? I can find a suitable ship for you too. One tip – if you get seasick, then stick to river cruising. River cruise ships are much smaller, carrying up to 200 passengers, and you can always see land. There are companies who offer an all-inclusive experience, including shore excursions. If you are more budget conscious, I’ll seek out the best cruise for you. If you want to fly to pick up a cruise in Dubai, but have a few nights there first, I can arrange that as well. It’s so important to find the right cruise for you – everyone is individual and everyone has different requirements.

WITH OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE, SANDRA HILL OFFERS QUALIFIED ‘PERSON-CENTERED’ COUNSELLING FROM HER HOME IN CUMREW
H
ave you heard of the Bach Flower Remedies? Let me try to give you a little insight into this natural healing method. Since 1936, the thirty-eight remedies discovered by Dr. Bach have been used to restore emotional and psychological equilibrium to individual’s during periods of mild or intense stress. What makes them so special is that they can be applied before the first signs of physical illness takes its hold! To quote Dr Bach himself, “before almost all serious complaints, there is usually a time of not being quite fit, or a bit run down: that is the time to treat this condition, to get fit again and stop things going further”. He believed that the position of a Bach Practitioner is to provide guidance and insight into the use of the Remedies. The patient is encouraged to recognise that he/she has the responsibility for his/her own healing. A qualified practitioner will endeavour to help the patient to learn for themselves how to use the Remedies which are available from all good Health Food Stores. Two or three visits to the practitioner usually accomplishes this, and often proves to be quite exciting. Contact Sandra, in complete confidence on 01768 896191 to arrange your consultation. HOW DO BACH FLOWER REMEDIES WORK? Bach flower essences have the ability to change a negative emotion into a positive one. For instance, a person with a low self-esteem will, after taking specific flower essences, start to believe in him or herself again and will be more confident dealing with the day-to-day things. Negative emotions are not suppressed but turned into the opposite, positive emotional state. For example, fear of failure into self-confidence, or impatience into calmness and tranquility. ARE BACH REMEDIES SAFE? Bach flower essences are 100% natural and can be used successfully by children and adults. They are completely safe and harmless. There are no side effects, you cannot overdose and they are not addictive. They can be used in combination with other medication and treatment including homeopathy, without interference.

GENUINE OR NOT? from LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] proud to be part of the arboricultural association
A
nyone can call themselves a tree surgeon (arborist), place an advert in Yellow Pages and offer a service. But an advert does not guarantee quality of work or that it will be carried out safely. That is why you should always use an ARB Approved Contractor. Aboriculture requires a high degree of technical competence which must be supported by training and experience. For these reasons, tree work should only be undertaken by well trained, competent arborists experienced at the type of work being done such as tree pruning or tree removal. Tree work that has not been carried out properly can cause serious harm to your trees that have taken many years to grow. It is hard for an untrained trimmer to know where to make cuts as well as how to make them.
You may conclude that this is a job best left to the professionals Common mistakes include cutting branches off the tops of the tree (topping), trimming the ends off the ends of the branches (tipping), and cutting a disproportionate number of branches from one area of the tree. All these can cause trees to look awkward, and sometimes it can take a long time to outgrow the effects of a bad trim! Correct pruning cuts are made just beyond the branch collar at the point of attachment. The tree is biologically equipped to close such a wound, provided the tree is healthy enough and the wound is not too large. Cuts made along

a limb between lateral branches create stubs with wounds that the tree may not be able to close. The exposed wood tissues begin to decay. Normally, a tree will “wall off,” or compartmentalize, the decaying tissues, but few trees can defend the multiple severe wounds caused by topping. The decay organisms are given a free path to move down through the branches. In addition to the long-term effects of improper tree trimming, there are also some immediate dangers. When trimming large branches, you may accidentally drop a branch onto nearby property. Branches are heavy and when falling from any height, they can cause quite significant damage. You may be liable for this damage if a third party is affected. Even more destructive than property damage is the potential personal damage that can occur. Trimming trees is not without risk to the trimmer. Falling branches as well as accidental injury from trimming tools (such as chainsaws) are the most common causes of damage. These kinds of injuries can be serious and even fatal. As you consider the harm that can result from improperly trimming trees, you may come to the conclusion that this is a job that is best left to the professionals. Our tree technicians and arborists know the best techniques to quickly and safely trim your trees. We will trim your trees properly in order to leave them stronger, healthier, and more beautiful than before, and most important of all we are proud to be part of the arboricultural association.

MOTOR REVIEW

MOTORING
written by NICHE MOTORING JOURNALIST ANDREW CORRIE
helsea tractors, off roaders, 4x4s, 4WD’s. Whatever you call them they’re one of the most versatile and reliable types of vehicle you can buy, no matter the time of year. And their popularity isn’t slowing down – welcome to the new Mercedes Benz GLE350d. What is it about these vehicles that makes them so popular? Well let’s take a look at four benefits you can get from owning a new or used 4x4. 1. Better, more reliable traction 4x4 means ‘4 wheel drive’, so that rather than engine power going only to the front wheels or only to the rear wheels, on a 4x4 power goes to all 4 wheels. The Mercedes GLE has 4Matic, which is a permanent all wheel drive system, that tied with air-suspension, gives a very smooth, safe and comforting ride. 2. An elevated driving position Many 4x4s have an elevated driving position which gives drivers a number of benefits, including: better visibility of the road
Who would need a permit for the tip if you had one of these? and of other vehicles, better accessibility and, for some, an increased feeling of safety and security (and smugness). The GLE is no shrinking violet – it’s a heck of a lot bigger than the out-going model. 3. Flexibility with space and storage While you can get extra leg room, head room and boot space in some conventional saloons and estate cars, many 4x4s also offer increased flexibility for drivers and passengers with individually adjustable seats, even in the back seats, and having the addition of 2 extra seats in the very back is very handy. With all the seats down, the rear of the GLE turns into a massive cave with a whopping
2005 litres of storage space – who would need a permit for the tip if you had one of these.. 4. Towing capacity If you’re a fan of camping or caravanning, or need to tow a horsebox, then this is ideal for you. The GLE can take up to 2700kg braked, which means it can pretty much tow anything! With towing you should always make sure that your caravan doesn’t weigh more than 85% of your vehicle’s kerb weight – it’s a legal requirement that you don’t exceed your maximum towing limit. Before you set off make sure you know how to safely tow a caravan. 5. Off-road capability Although they’re designed for any situation, not many drivers take their 4x4s off-roading. But it’s nice to know that if you do need to drive on tricky terrain, you’ll be safe. Whether you’re a weekend adventurer packing up your mountain bikes, or a festival fan who needs to access muddy fields all summer long, your GLE will handle it and with winter approaching, no need to worry about those icy roads. Fancy one? Well go and see Duncan and the team at the amazing new Mercedes Benz of Carlisle showroom on Kingmoor Park, and tell them Andrew sent you. Tel: 01228 371 691.

Surveys Make Sense
SURVEY EXPERTS BIRLEY STEELE LIGHTFOOT EXPLAIN WHY It is wise to get an expert to inspect the property BEFORE YOU BUY
uying a new home is normally the most expensive outlay of a person’s life. A survey should enable you to: 1) Make a reasoned and informed judgement on whether or not to proceed. 2) Assess whether or not the property is a reasonable purchase at the agreed price. 3)Be clear what decisions and actions should be taken before contracts are exchanged. The HomeBuyer Survey is the most popular type of survey and identifies and provides information on: 1) The general condition of the property. 2) Any significant factors likely to materially affect the value of the property. 3) A market valuation. 4) A rebuilding insurance valuation.
The inspection of the property includes: Roof coverings, External walls, Kitchen fittings, Windows/doors/internal joinery, General decorative condition, Internal walls, floors and partitions, Internal joinery, Sub floor ventilation, Roof structure, Sanitary appliances, Drainage, Rainwater goods and Damp proof course. A visual inspection of the services is undertaken. COST: The cost of the report will depend on the size and type of the property, its location and value. It is often the case that the report highlights defects which are sufficient to negotiate a reduced price, very often offsetting the survey cost. As a rough guide expect to pay £480 to £700 for your HomeBuyer Survey.
Why do I need a survey when I am already having a Mortgage Valuation? This is a common question, however there is a fundamental difference between a Mortgage Valuation and a HomeBuyer Survey and Valuation. The Mortgage Valuation is carried out to ensure that the funds lent to you are secure. It tells you very little about the fabric of the building, and in fact the lender may not pass on any details of the valuation. The Homebuyers Survey and Valuation is written for your benefit giving factual information on significant aspects of the condition of the property. It allows you to make an informed decision on whether to proceed with the purchase.

M
y nephew Philip needed a walk. He was going stir crazy, suffering from cabin fever looking after his mother who was recovering from an operation. It was supposed to be a holiday for him and it wasn’t shaping up that way. He and his dad Anthony fancied the Langdale Pikes, I thought they were too far away. A short blast was all that was required. Their spaniel Indy was coming along too, she was still a young pup and despite being an absolute sweetie, was a tornado on four legs, who had an aversion to coming back when called. She would have to be kept on a lead at all times. We arrived at the tiny car park below Mousthwaite Comb, too late for a parking space, so we retraced our steps and parked up in a layby alongside the A66. The viaduct on the former railway line from Penrith to Keswick was visible across the fields. At the top of the comb a stiff wind was blowing, and Sharp Edge was seen rearing up to the saddle, high above, the summit structure that gives Blencathra its alternative name of Saddleback. Phil, bless him, seemed to enjoy my tales of the spectral ghost army of Souther Fell (witnessed by the villagers
“An array of proud peaks rose up above the valleys containing the lakes of Derwentwater and Thirlmere” of Mungrisedale on Midsummer Eve 1745, yet the next day there was no trace of footprints) and the erratic course of the Glenderamackin River which twists and turns around the foot of Souther Fell only to arrive back near its source after many miles of travel. Then I moved on to the two immortal fish, that legend has it, reside in Bowscale Tarn, over to the North. They are called Adam and Eve, and no, I’ve never
Excellent value for money with high exposure
spotted them, despite many visits. The route is overbearing and dull up to the top of Scales Fell, and Anthony, despite being very stoic, appeared to be slowing down a little and changing colour. I always walk at the pace of the slowest walker and advised him to take it easy and have a drink to rehydrate, then, all of a sudden, the vistas changed, with sweeping views down the face of the mountain, and there was no stopping him. He was off! Phil and Indy were in the middle and I stopped to talk to my pal Iain Turner who had attained the summit (running) in a personal best time of 41 minutes from the same starting point that day. Indy looked rather anxious and badly wanted to round us all up! The views to the South and the West were tremendous, An array of proud peaks rose up above the valleys containing the lakes of Derwentwater and Thirlmere. Phil was seeking out the roof tree of Scafell Pike, the highest land in England. Now the wind was gusting and whipping our clothing. Indy’s extending lead was making very peculiar sounds in the blast but she was quite happy and seemed to love standing atop the ridge with the breeze in her face. The summit was thrang with folk, so having looked down the serpent - like arête of Hall’s Fell, we retired to the far side of Gategill Fell, where we had our lunch out of the wind, a few yards below the summit ridge. This was very pleasant, looking out over Skiddaw Forest and watching the cloud patterns on the landscape. A visit to the white quartz cross and the top of Sharp Edge rounded off the day. 25
