ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

I

s it just me or did July and August just last five minutes? This year is absolutely flying by - and what is more disturbing - every year disappears faster than the one preceding it! However, according to a recent study, as we get older we think that ‘a set period of time’ passes much more quickly than when we were younger. It is not clear why, but possible explanations range from age-related changes in brain chemistry to a feeling of having seen it all before or even the thought that we have less time left to live….oh well on that cheery note…. Whatever the explanation, the discovery by Brazilian scientists helps explain why summer holidays seem to last for ever when we are children but pass in the blink of an eye by the time we are middle-aged…(I think I now qualify in this age bracket). To measure how the passage of time is perceived, 233 men and women aged between 15 and 89 were asked to close their eyes and mentally count the passing of 120 seconds. All ages perceived the two minutes as passing more quickly than it actually did – but the oldest people were the most inaccurate. The men and women in the 15 to 29 age group counted down the 120 seconds in 115 seconds, on average.

The Shrubbery, Great Corby, Carlisle CA4 8LR Tel: 01228 562904 Mobile: 07766 566534 Designed & Produced Michaela Corrie Design Printers

Bishops, Hampshire

The 30 to 49 age group took 96 seconds but the over-50s took just 86 seconds. This meant the oldest group perceived time as passing 25 per cent more quickly than the youngest did. The researchers said: ‘Our study aimed to estimate the passage of time in different age groups, to test the truth of the saying that time passes faster in older people. Our results indicated that the perception of time passage was accelerated in ageing.’ So there you have it. Congratulations to Aidan who found Bear in Scotby, to Isabelle who spotted Winston on all the correct pages and won a fabulous Winston soft toy, and finally to Catherine Bainbridge who won the beautiful Flying Scotsman book. Now…where’s my slippers…

Automated External Defibrillator [AED]

H

ave you noticed the increase of AED units being available on public buildings? If not, start looking out for them, as they could help you save someone’s life! Lots of our local villages now have signs as you enter the village telling you the location of the defibrillator. In fact, there are just over 400 public access defibrillators across Cumbria listed on www.cumbria.gov.org. Use it to find out where the nearest defibrillator is to your house, work or any location you regularly visit. Why they are so important? In one year alone, the emergency services attempted to resuscitate approximately 28,000 cases of someone in cardiac arrest in England. The survival rate for those casualties was only 8.6%. So, how can we help to increase this survival rate? One study showed that when CPR and the Defibrillator were used the survival rate increased to 38%!! So that would mean out of the 28,000 casualties, 10,640 could survive instead of only 2408. What do they do? They are a safe, reliable, computerised device that can analyse heart rhythms and enable non-medically qualified people deliver the life saving shock. The electric shock to the heart tries to restore normal rhythm. They have a clear on button and will give you clear instructions. How to use them? Training is advisable as effective CPR and quickly using the Defibrillator is the most effective way to

save a life. But they can be used even if you have not been trained - it is good to know that they will not shock anyone who does not need it. So you can’t harm the casualty. They are to be used on someone who is unconscious and not breathing. Always first call 999. If you know a Defibrillator is nearby send someone, or get it yourself as quickly as possible. The operator will give the code to open the Defibrillator box when given your location. If you know CPR, do it until the Defibrillator arrives. When the defibrillator arrives: • Open the unit and switch it on (there will be a clear on button). Now the defibrillator will give you clear instructions. • Attach the leads to the pads in the packet. Some will already have the pads attached. • Remove clothing from the casualty’s chest. • Peel the backing from one pad at a time and place firmly in position. There is a diagram on each pad to show where it should go. • One will be just below the casualty’s right collarbone. • The other pad will be around the casualty’s left side, over the lower ribs. • Make sure no one touches the casualty. The defibrillator will tell you to stand clear as it analyses the heart rhythm. • It will then tell you if they need a shock or if CPR should be continued. • If a shock needs to be delivered a red light will flash that it will instruct you to press. After the shock is delivered the instructions will be to continue CPR. Remember they are easy to use and will not cause harm to the casualty. But if they are used quickly the rate of survival increases significantly. AED training is included on all our courses to give you confidence and life saving skills. 1.5 hour courses are also available for CPR and AED training only. We also offer all First Aid Qualifications for businesses. In the next issue I will discuss another First Aid skill. What would you like it to be? Contact me on 07704 571435 and the most requested emergency will be discussed.

CROWN

REDUCTION

Y

local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience to help save our trees

ou won’t notice your trees growing from one day to the next. On a daily basis the rate of growth is imperceptible. But every now and then you’ll get out into your garden and you’ll notice that your trees have grown bigger! Great news as this is a sign of a healthy tree. However, maybe your garden isn’t getting as much light as it used to? Or perhaps a large tree is starting to interfere with overhead telephone and power lines? When a tree grows too large for the available space and starts causing safety issues or aesthetic concerns then it is time to reduce its size. And this is much easier to do sooner rather than later.

Crown reductions should not be confused with the undiscerning and damaging technique known AS topping. The natural shape of the tree is preserved.

Reducing the size of a tree is usually achieved through pruning but without the right tools and experience this can be hard work. And if you wait too long there could be a lot of uncontrolled growth which could mean a large amount of pruning. This can seriously damage the health of a tree. But it doesn’t have to be difficult if you act in a timely fashion. Here at Orchard Tree Surgery we have both the tools and experience required to carry out pruning quickly and efficiently. One of our favourite jobs to carry out is the crown reduction. It’s a task that requires the knowledge and skill of professionals. We can reduce the height and spread of the crown in a manner that will make you happy and keep your tree healthy.

8

Crown Reduction Benefits

There are many benefits to a crown reduction. • The natural shape of the tree is preserved. Crown reductions should not be confused with the undiscerning and damaging technique known as topping. The appearance of the tree is retained with a crown reduction, and even aesthetically improved, as a balanced well-structured crown is created. • Properties and outbuildings can be given proper clearance. As a result of no branches overhanging your buildings your gutters will be less likely to clog. • Takes stress off of over weighted lateral limbs • Encourages healthy regrowth. Your tree will continue to look great. • The reduction in height and spread will allow more light to pass into your garden. You will be able to enjoy more sun and your other plants will love the extra light they now get. If you ask us to carry out a crown reduction we will first assess your tree and offer only the best advice. We will remove an array of branches,

including any that are dead or diseased, in order to reduce the overall spread of the tree. We will clean up after ourselves leaving no mess.

here is something homely and comforting about meatballs, and they are pretty versatile things. This is my take on a Moroccan style meatballs. Moroccan cuisine is layered with depths and depths of flavor that just explode when you take a bite. This particular dish has one of my all time favorite things in, and that’s GINGER. Why I love it so much is because of its fiery fresh crisp kick, that warms the body. Ginger helps fight off colds and flus, helps the digestive system. But what is even better about it is

that it helps with brain function, helps aid the cognitive skills (so that’s reading, thinking, all the stuff you take for granted) , and memory. It is also believed that ginger, specifically ginger tea (see recipe below) can help with the nausea feeling during the treatment of cancer, and morning sickness during pregnancy. It can also help with reducing inflammation, in people suffering with arthritis. As you can see this little beige looking root is incredible.

GINGER TEA RECIPE

TAKING A SELFIE

Simple and easy. Boil the kettle, in a mug add a few slices of fresh ginger and leave to steep for 3 minutes. You can add fresh squeeze of lemon and honey to add more flavor.

he far north of England is a key site for family historians. Many researchers, seeking to trace their ancestry back through the generations, will find their trail leads to the north or through it. And yet, despite the burgeoning interest in genealogy and the importance of the region in so many life stories, no previous book has provided a guide to the documents and records that family historians can use in their search. In this accessible and informative introduction to the subject, Keith Gregson looks at the history and heritage of the region - of Northumberland, Tyneside, Durham, Wearside, Tees Valley and Cumbria - and gives a fascinating insight into the world in which our ancestors lived. He introduces the reader to the variety of records that are available for genealogical research, from legal and ecclesiastical archives, birth and death certificates to the records of local government, employers, institutions, clubs, societies and schools.

People like to buy locally from businesses they know and trust

From the author: “My book has been around for a few years and we may well add to it in the near future. Covering the old counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, Durham and Northumberland as well as the various Yorkshire and Lancashire add-ons to create Cumbria, it was a region I knew well. Three of my grandparents came from Millom, Barrow and South Shields and both my parents grew up in Barrow. One family moved to Cartmel and I lived my youth in Kendal and Carlisle before going to university in Newcastle and later living in Sunderland, taught in Hartlepool. To top it all, a married son lived in Alnwick. I am a social historian by training and continued to write academic articles but teaching taught me communication skills and the book enabled me to share my love of research with ‘fellow’ countrymen and women. More details about my work as a writer, musician and historian can be viewed at my web site which also contains details of how to get in touch”. (www.keithgregson.com).

TRAVEL

San Francisco is a beautiful, vibrant and charming city as well as an extremely popular film location

CALIFORNIA stephen denT,dAWSON & SANDERSON, wa s lucky enough to spend some time in this fabulous city and visit some of its most popular attractions and film locations

T

here is nowhere better to lose yourself than in a film. You can be a character in any country in any time period and for a couple of hours you can forget who you are and be who you dream. I can’t quite put my finger on it but there’s something about seeing places you recognize from home in a movie. Sure, Los Angeles and New York are popular movie locations, but in my opinion, San Francisco takes some beating. Mrs Doubtfire (1993) , considered by many to be one of Robin Williams’ best films, was filmed at Steiner Street in Pacific Heights and is still visited my many people every day. When Robin Williams died, fans showed their love and support by laying flowers at the house used in the film. One of the greatest films shot in San Francisco, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958) starring James Stewart covers a lot of the city, from the Mission District and Nob Hill to the famous vantage point of the Golden Gate Bridge from Fort Mason. Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry (1971) saw Eastwood’s character Harry Callaghan chase after the killer at the Kezar Stadium. Other famous spots include Vista Point overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge at the cross at Mount

Davidson. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) starred real life father and son Will and Jaden Smith. The movie tells the heartfelt story of a father struggling to provide for himself and his son. Locations include Glen Park Bart Station and Golden Gate Park. In the 1978 Superman movie a school bus plummets down from the Golden Gate Bridge, but gets rescued by Superman. In the X-Men, The Last Stand the Golden Gate Bridge gets altered by Magneto. The bridge has also been destroyed by Godzilla in 2014. The 1996 film The Rock starring Sean Connery, Ed Harris and Nicolas Cage sees a group of renegade marines seize a stockpile of chemical weapons and takes over Alcatraz and hold a group of tourists as hostages. The list just goes on and on and makes it clear why San Francisco is one of the best known film locations in the world. I recommend Titan Travel’s

‘California & The Golden West’ Tour which includes great cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles, iconic stretches of Pacific coastal road and Route 66, and the bewitching expanse of Yosemite National Park, along with the highlights of neighbouring states - the Wild West landscapes of Arizona and the extraordinary Las Vegas, America’s playground. The awe-inspiring Grand Canyon is a certain highlight; so there is plenty of time to experience this wonder of nature from your two-night base at a top Flagstaff hotel. The perfect conclusion to your holiday is a night’s stay in the oasis of a Californian coastal resort. Prices start from £2492 per person based on a twin share and includes Titan’s VIP door to door service. As the Mamas & Papas song goes… ‘If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to go with Dawson & Sanderson….’ (You need to sing this bit)

Animals and FIREWORKS

With Autumn fast approaching, early preparation for fireworks can help prevent your pet becoming stressed Cats and Dogs • Try to ensure your cat(s) and/or dog(s) are inside after dark. • Keep external doors and windows closed and secure cat flaps. Consider closing curtains too. • Familiar sounds such as the radio or television will help keep your pet calm and dampen any unfamiliar noises from outside. • Create a den for your pet where they can snuggle up and feel safe. It may be worth introducing this space a few days before you anticipate fireworks – this way they can become familiar with it. • Allow your pet to express natural behaviours – you may find they whine or miaow more than normal – this is a coping mechanism and shouldn’t be discouraged. • Try to behave as you usually do – if they sense you are stressed this will only add to their potential discomfort. • Praise your pet for calm behaviour! This will help reinforce the fact that there is nothing to be alarmed about and that they are safe to relax.

Horses • Do not change your management routine unless it will be genuinely beneficial to do so, for example if it means moving your equine away from a paddock close to a planned firework event.

• If they are used to sharing their space with a companion, ensure they remain together to minimise stress. • Check for any potential hazards such as unsteady gates or fences to help minimise any risks to a spooked horse. • Monitor your horse’s behaviour, or get someone trusted and experienced to help. Ensure you and your vet are contactable in an emergency. • Give your horse some extra enrichment to help distract them. • Take care of your own welfare! If your horse is easily startled, be prepared to make allowances for erratic behaviour such as kicking and rearing up. Don’t risk any rides, schooling or evening hacks. More advice regarding this issue is available on our website: www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk. If you want any further advice relating to your cat, dog or horse, please consider contacting us on 01228 560082. If for some reason we are unable to help with your particular situation, we can put you in touch with someone who can. Your vet will be able to advise you too.

BUSINESS SENSE An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, ‘Can I also sit like you and do nothing?’ The eagle answered: ‘Sure, why not.’ So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

New Hearing Centre for Denton Holme, Carlisle

V

ikki Swift has been a Hearing Aid Audiologist for the past sixteen years. She has decided after working for two companies, to go it alone. Vikki Swift Hearingcare is a family owned business, and is the only Independent centre based in Carlisle, offering friendly impartial advice. Situated at 38 Denton Street, Carlisle, Vikki Swift Hearingcare opened on the 1st of October 2016 (we are currently celebrating our first anniversary). The clinic offers a wide range of services that includes hearing assessments, hearing aid solutions as well as wax removal and ear protection advice. Those that have never dealt with hearing loss cannot appreciate how difficult life can be when we only hear parts of the conversation, or the world we live in.

Vikki, has built up a rapport with many people across Cumbria in her time as an audiologist, and just felt the time was right to branch out and set up on her own. “I’ve always been passionate about audiology, and how fitting hearing aids can help transform a person’s quality of life, their interaction again with family and friends. How simple this seems yet how rewarding it can be both professionally and personally.” Those that have never dealt with hearing loss cannot appreciate how difficult life can be when we only hear parts of the conversation, or the world we live in. Hearing aids are a custom product that are fitted to the individual’s needs. The first advice Vikki offers is if you or someone you know is struggling to hear then drop in or call for a hearing assessment.

18

During the consultation, Vikki will take a history of your hearing health, examine your ears using an otoscope, test your hearing, discuss lifestyle needs, then look at what solutions are available. Common signs that may prompt a hearing assessment are: • The TV volume is increasing • Mishearing words and conversations, especially in a group • Not hearing the doorbell or telephone ringing • Feeling tired or stressed as having to concentrate or more to hear

If you are you know someone that relates to some of these signs call in or book appointment for a hearing assessment which is free of charge. It may also just be wax! If it is Vikki also offers this service using the latest microsuction technology to remove the wax.

The world is a noisy place from the music we listen to for enjoyment to the noise pollution that we are exposed to, to the workplaces we choose. Ear defenders are available for a variety of environments, from general noise to a more specialist protector for example shooting. Hearingcare is a personalised service where relationships are built up, and trust gained from educating family members to understanding why their mother, father, husband or wife appear to be more distant and struggle in a group conversations. “It’s about understanding each person’s concerns and hearing problems and then working together to get the very best solution” advises Vikki. Hearing aids have advanced significantly over the last ten years, “Hearing aids are now able to connect to mobile phones, televisions, i-pads and other devices through wireless systems, opening up the hearing world further for the enjoyment of anybody with hearing impairment.” Any concerns or questions regarding your hearing health please do not hesitate to call us, for further information.

Isn’t it time to test your hearing? Vikki Swift Hearingcare 38 Denton Street, Carlisle CA2 5EL Tel: 01228 599998 email:vikki@vikkiswift-hearingcare.co.uk

downed tools back in 2004. My arm ached daily and my hair singed. The battle had to stop. What I wanted was to be free. My liberation is now entering into its thirteenth year. Taking off my cycle helmet after last evening’s time trial, my long hair emerged, dripping in sweat. Sounds grim? Maybe. A quick upside down shake of the tresses: I stood air-drying for the post race chat as ringlets formed. By the time I left I had, arguably, salon perfect hair. Full with volume and life.

Laugh in the rain in the knowledge that your hair will only be enlivened My camp, the camp of the ‘free’ is gathering momentum. Fashion week was on message. I am not against a style, just a style that you were born with. Why the daily battle? Or worse, the avoidance of out-door life. Sheltering in fear of the inevitable washouts Cumbria has to offer. I do not own an umbrella. As we enter the autumn months, I suggest you let go of those ferocious implements that cook our tresses. Choose to be a free spirit. Stop being a flat pancake and instead, channel your inner rock chic. Loosen up. Being unchained could liberate many to kick back and let the good times curl - by which I mean get fit. I can fully recommend the cycle helmet hair. On the particular night I mentioned, my helmet devoid of ventilation. I imagine you may get the same result if you took up horse riding or canoeing. Laugh in the rain in the knowledge that your hair will only be enlivened. Throw your head back in that gale force wind in that same knowledge that it doesn’t matter a bit. What is the worse that can happen? I can tell you. You will look carefree and that has to be the best anti-ager there is.
