ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome There are two Great British Obsessions: Tea and DIY, and there’s no better time than a long bank holiday to embark on a few household repairs. For many of us, however, its quite a different story. A recent survey found that two thirds of British homeowners have unfinished DIY jobs around the house, mostly because they don’t know how to complete them. Some even went so far as to say that DIY scared them. Decorating is the most common form of DIY. Normally instigated by the wife, it usually results in the complete destruction of the room by the husband, and the disbanding of the marriage by the judge. “How could you paint the bathroom in New White when you knew I wanted Old White? How”! Because they look exactly the same, that’s how! See for us blokes, the uninitiated, the range of colours now is overwhelming. This is compounded by the bizarre names companies give their paints, presumably

to try and trick panicked men into buying sixteen different shades of white. Names like: Mouse’s Back, Elephant’s Breath, Dead Salmon, Pigeon! Nearly every home owner tries decorating at some stage. The divorce rate is roughly 50%. Draw your own conclusions. I make a great cuppa by the way. Well done to Mrs Reed, winner of the first prize in our crossword competition and Mrs Skinner who won the 911 tickets. Thanks as always to our dear readers, advertisers, contributors and delivery guys.

Carlisle’s Past THE VICTORIA BATHS AT PORT CARLISLE

W

hen the Carlisle Ship Canal opened in 1823 the outlet to the Solway at Fishers Cross was re-named Port Carlisle. The Canal company developed this new village by building houses to let or buy, and a hotel for passengers in transit as well as visitors. The better – off in Carlisle soon began to use it at weekends as a refuge from the smoke of the city. They came to walk along the coast and enjoy the salty air. Soon extra attractions began to appear such as tennis courts and a bowling green but there was one thing missing; salt water baths, 5

6

essential for the health of the Georgian gentry. Then in 1844 the Victoria Baths building, was constructed using money raised from the issue of five hundred £1 shares. Apparently inflation did not have much effect on its value over the years, because the father of the present owner, Roger Brough, bought the building for £540 in 1944; one hundred years after its construction. The baths further enhanced the resort image of the village, which could be visited to partake of the sea air and healthy salt water baths. The Carlisle Journal carried the following report:- “BATHS AT PORT CARLISLE --The excellent salt water hot and cold baths, recently erected at Port Carlisle by a Joint Stock Company, are now in full operation, and will be found a great accommodation to the public, and a source of general attraction to the port.” A handpump was used to lift filtered sea water direct from the Solway through a pipe under the road into the building.

Q: What’s the best and worst aspect of being in your specific business? A: Every job is never the same, whether it be an oven clean, chimney sweep, end of tenancy clean or property management. The worst part of my job is informing people when I sweep their stoves that they have been fitted incorrectly and they have to be condemned until a liner is fitted etc. we are the only trained sweeps in Cumbria by ‘The Guild of Master Sweeps’ and a member of the ‘European federation of chimney sweeps’. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I enjoy hunting for new waterparks to explore, cycling or generally being outside. Q: Any amusing experiences whilst at work? A: Working in residential homes is never dull and usually attracts an audience. Once I was repairing a chair and I had three men watching and offering advice whilst one of them had brought his standard lamp out of his room and held as you would a rifle pointing it at me for extra light, it screamed of Captain Mannering! The light served no purpose but he was so pleased that he could help, we jus t kept thanking him for his assistance. Q: If you could hold on to just one memory from your life forever, what would that be? A. The strength of my Nephew Tom and his family when they discovered he was suffering from cancer, how he dealt with it and never gave up hope, how my sister and her family never gave up hope and kept everything together, I couldn’t do it. Unfortunately Tom lost his fight at age 23 leaving behind his beautiful Daughter Jasmine and his devoted family. Q: Who was the last person you hugged? A: That will be my girlfriend.

CYCLING

BRICKS O

CYCLING TIPS AND ADVICE FROM SPORT EDITOR GARY DICKSON

ver the last few years the way people shop has changed dramatically and it’s fair to say that these days everyone wants the best dealt they can get. Buying a new bike is no different. So will you go internet or local? Below are some important things to consider:-

RESEARCH: This is one of the main reasons buyers use the internet? Combine this with in-store research and you are doing the right things to find the bike that is perfect for you.

PRICE: Many would prefer to buy locally if the deal is right and usually you will find your local bike shop offers a very competitive deal. However, if you’ve found ‘a better deal’ online print it off and present it when checking things out locally! CORRECT SIZING: Sizing a bike is similar to sizing a pair of shoes. Try before you buy.

PART-EXCHANGE: If you

have a bike to sell first you could put it on ebay but why put yourself through all that hassle. The hours you save, the ebay & PayPal fees, the collection/delivery problems makes part-ex very attractive, not to mention all those crazy questions that people who never buy ask!

ASSEMBLY & WARRANTY:

When buying online your new bike will require final assembly. This takes approximately 1 hour to complete by a competent mechanic. If not done correctly not only will it invalidate your warranty but may also put your life at risk. Assembly and warranty work is included in the price when you buy locally. That’s worth a lot!

6 WEEK SAFETY SERVICE: Some bike shops

offer customers a FREE safety service after they have bought their bike to ensure everything is working correctly after the “bedding-in” period. This is really important if you want trouble free riding, so make sure you don’t miss out. My advice is to buy locally, but then it could be said I’ve got a vested interest. However the reasons above make sense as I’m sure you’ll agree. I hope this helps you decide for yourself.

MONEY

BRAVE NEW WORLD

by Mike Turney, Principal of Mike Turney Wealth Management, Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society

S

pring Budgets have had little to promise or offer UK savers and investors in recent years, apart from setting out the depth of the economic challenge ahead for the Coalition Government. Only last year, the mood was subdued, with talk of a potential triple dip into recession and a long and bumpy road to recovery. The UK’s economy, twelve months on, is undergoing a regeneration and a rate of growth that is now the fastest in the Western world. As Britain looks towards a General Election in May 2015, the Budget contained far-reaching changes for its savers and investors. Chancellor George Osborne, in his address on 19 March, said the Budget rewarded “the makers, the doers and the savers” in Britain. And the new pension and tax-efficient saving arrangements certainly offer radical reform of the UK’s personal finance landscape and welcome breaks for savers and investors after four years of austerity. A significant change in pension arrangements has lifted restrictions on access to pension pots and made it more attractive for individuals to invest for their retirement through pensions. And the reform of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) brings a very welcome increase in the annual allowance to £15,000 from July this year. The boost that the 2014 Budget has given to investors, however, comes amid continued austerity, with the government only halfway through the fiscal consolidation it embarked on in 2010. Public borrowing levels still remain at £108 billion for 2014 (www.parliament. uk, 21/3/14). When the coalition came to power in 2010, Osborne had planned to balance the budget by 2016. Instead, the aim is 2019 (www.gov.uk, 19/3/14). The

recovery also remains prone to wider global risks, whether from China’s economy or Russian military action. Meanwhile, there are widespread concerns that the recovery has been driven by consumers running down their savings, while households are squeezed by living costs as prices rise faster than earnings. But the good news for business, markets and households is that the UK economic recovery has entrenched. In March, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) revised up its forecast for the pace of the recovery in 2014 to 2.7%, from 1.8% a year ago (when its estimate for 2013 growth was a mere 0.6%). The OBR also expects earnings will grow by 2.5% this year, and inflation by 1.9%. Osborne, in these more secure conditions, packed his Budget with a broad range of pre-election giveaways, including a reduction in the savings tax rate and an increase in the personal tax-free allowance to £10,500 for 2015/16. The Budget also restated that the Inheritance Tax threshold will remain at £325,000 until April 2018. Investors have done well as growing economic confidence, loose monetary policy and lowinterest rates have buoyed equi-

ties in the leading financial centres. Although 2014 is unlikely to match last year’s market advances, market returns are expected to reflect the improvement in the global economy and corporate and consumer confidence. In this upbeat environment, the Budget’s ISA allowance increase holds out further investment opportunity, particularly for those that want an alternative to the near-zero returns on offer from cash. The Budget’s relaxation of ISA rules to allow any combination of stocks and shares and cash rightly gives investors more flexibility to manage their valuable allowance to suit their attitude to risk and their needs. However, the Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney, remains adamant that the base rate will remain at a record 0.5% low while the economy recovers; and is widely expected to be held at this level until mid-2015 (www.bbc.co.uk, 20/2/14). It seems unlikely that the Government would welcome a rise in interest rates just before it goes to the polls. Osborne’s move to increase the annual ISA allowance to £15,000 was designed to encourage Britain to set aside more for the future. With mild inflation still eroding the value of cash, the hope must be that investors make the most of the long-term benefits provided by this even more valuable and flexible opportunity. Osborne’s decision to champion investor choice has also underpinned the more flexible new pension regime. Perhaps most radically, he has made proposals to free up access to pension pots and change the rules for annuities from April 2015, as well as introducing a new Pensioner Bond. The pro-

posal to allow anyone over the age of 55 to take their entire pension pot as a lump sum (albeit with 25% tax-free and the remaining amount liable to Income Tax) is a radical innovation that allows individuals to invest, save, spend or give as they see fit. As an interim measure, the guaranteed income required before qualification for flexible drawdown has been cut to £12,000, from £20,000, and this retrospective move will allow anyone in drawdown to benefit from the increased flexibility. The more liberal regime, too, complements the traditional annuity route and the security it offers for those who want a guaranteed income over their retirement lifetime. Annuity investors will benefit when interest rates start to rise; while drawdown investors can encounter problems in the face of stock market volatility. The new pension regime admirably hands more control to individuals over their long-term financial plans. But, as with all financial planning, each person’s needs and appetite for risk or security are distinct. Retirement planning requires expert, not off-the-shelf, solutions. Osborne’s brave new world for savers and investors creates further nuances and complexities that make wealth management advice as important as ever.

GARDENING

Latent

TRICHOTILLOMANIA Life and the occasional gardening tip from garden editor jason hindmoor

A

fter 20 years of marriage I’m getting used to the subtle signs that tell me that I may be getting under my wife’s feet at home. For example last week I had a rainy day and finished gardening early and thought I would be helpful and wash up. My wife wasn’t impressed though and dropped the plugged in toaster into the washing up bowl. Since then a number of my customers have commented on my healthy glow and a few wanted to know my secret. I had to explain that I can’t really recommend it but its exfoliation and unwanted hair removal courtesy of Russell Hobbs 4 slice. Whilst I’m on that subject, I’d like to mention a medical condition that’s been on my mind recently: trichotillomania – The compulsive urge to pull one’s own hair out. I googled it and apparently it’s caused by marriage, having 2 year old kids or foreign call centres. Its exacerbated by other people’s 2 year old kids and any contact with in-laws. Look it up if you don’t believe me. Anyway I’ve decided that I’m not going bald after all but that I’m suffering from latent trichotillomania. I’m not sure what’s triggered it with me but I think it’s my ongoing battle with the Advertising Standards Watchdog. It started when I wrote to them to complain about Mock Jumpers. You think that you’ve bought a shirt and a jumper and when you get it home you find out that you’ve been mocked. What you actually have is a jumper with the top inch of someone’s old shirt sown to the top of it just to fool you. Something must be done to stop it before it gets out of control. Anyway my latest battle with them has been over the Diet Coke TV ads. Since those adverts started John and I have had nothing but problems with being pelted with Diet Coke cans

Gardening Tips Beware treacherous late frosts and keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is forecast. Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Remember these systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Dandelions are a nuisance at this time of year - if you don’t have time to deal with them properly, at least chop their heads off before they set seed.

specifically by our female customers in the 75-85 year old age bracket. I told the Advertising Standards Watchdog that someone would get hurt if they didn’t do something to stop it as some of these old dears have surprisingly strong throwing arms. John refuses to take his t-shirt

Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives.

‘trichotillomania’ – The compulsive urge to pull one’s own hair out off even if its soaked by Diet Coke but this just enrages the mob and a couple of times he has barely escaped with his dignity intact. It said on the news that the Home Office has compiled a list of the most satisfying occupations and Gardeners / Landscapers were third but I don’t believe that for a second. If they interviewed me I’d put them right, I’m going back to the Civil Service first chance I get. As we speak I’m applying for a nice job with the Advertising Standards Watchdog. How hard can it be? FOOD

RECIPE

SPICED ORANGE CAKE

• 3 Oranges (450g pulp) • 300g Ground Almonds • 300g Caster Sugar • 7 Eggs • 2 Tsp Baking Powder • 1 Tsp Ground Cinnamon • 1 Tsp Ground Ginger • Icing Sugar to Decorate • 300grm Caster Sugar • 300ml Double Cream

P

re-heat the oven to 180 C/Gas Mark 4 and grease a 24cm loaf tin with butter and line the base with baking parchment. Place the unpeeled oranges in a saucepan, cover with water and place over a low heat and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down to low and leave the oranges to simmer for 2 hours, or until very soft and tender. Drain the oranges and leave to cool. When the oranges are cool enough to handle, cut each in half, remove and discard the pips, then place the oranges – peel, pith, fruit and all – in a food processor and process until pulped. Weigh 450g of the pulped oranges, returning to the processor, add the ground almonds, sugar, eggs, baking powder, ground cinnamon and ground ginger and process until well mixed. Pour the batter into the baking tin and bake for 1 hour or until the cake is coming away from the side of the baking tin. To prevent the cake top from burning cover the top with foil, shiny side down, after 40 minutes. Leave the cake to cool completely in the tin. Remove from tin and wrap in foil. When serving the cake dust with icing sugar.

Banana Cake

using old brown bananas

I

have recently been inspired by the programme ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’. I used to make a lot of my daughter’s clothes when she was small, but more recently, I tend to just alter things rather than make them from scratch. After watching The Great British Sewing Bee however, I can see a sewing project forming in my mind. This will be much to my husband’s dismay as I tend to start things and not finish them. I have bags full of unfinished knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, the list goes on. I will admit though that I am easily influenced. For example when I watch Kirsty Allsop I want to make everything she makes, although I do think she went too far when she tie dyed some white socks and underwear to give away as presents and had about 10 buckets full of different coloured dyes in her kitchen to complete the task. On to food. I hate wasting food. I came across this recipe because I always seem to end up with two or three brown bananas in the fruit bowl which do not look very appetising and are ready for the bin. This is a fabulous recipe and a great way to use them up. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4. Lightly grease a 20cm-square, highsided baking tray. Combine 150g SR flour with 115g caster sugar and a

pinch of salt in a large bowl and stir to combine. Mash one banana and whisk together with 1 egg, 250ml milk, 100g melted butter and 2tsp vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Pour into the prepared tray and decorate with two more bananas, halved and placed in lines. Sprinkle with 100g light brown sugar and pour 125ml water on top. Place in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Set aside to cool slightly and serve with some cream. Also tastes great cold.

MOTORING

New i3 BMW Written by Andrew Corrie

Which Model? BMW i3 Verdict? Electrifying

A

fter test driving the new BMW i3, I’ve started to think I might change my name to iAndrew... makes it sound far more modern and down with the kids don’t you think? We all grew up with the ‘vroom vroom’ noise a car makes and it does take some getting used to that this car is silent, and I mean, silent. This got me thinking... The delivery of power of the i3 is instant, smooth and relentless... reminiscent of ‘a lift’ if you will. Now there is much debate starting about new electric cars being “too silent” and a danger to blind pedestrians. Head of acoustics engineers have said “simply imitating the sound of a combustion engine was not an option”. Well I may have the answer: Lift Music - some shnazzy smooth jazz, otherwise used for telephone systems and cheap family restaurants. Forget thoughts of lifts, Milk Floats and Golf Buggies though, this car is the real deal.

14

It’s different. It’s not just a car with an electric motor. BMW has rethought the whole thing. It’s made of carbon fibre, it’s light and strong. Inside, it’s light and airy, uncluttered, futuristic. One problem though, is the range. You can only do 100 miles between charges. However, it is designed as a city car, and doing a 100 miles a day around any city is a big ask I suppose. But what if you needed to do a longer airport run or your wife insists you take her shopping in Manchester or worse? Well the good people at BMW will lend you a car, from a 1 series to a 7 series, depending on how much money you contribute.Agree or disagree with this, it’s still a good solution to the range problem until technology advances, to squeeze more miles out of the battery. If this is the future, it’s fine by me, iAndrew.

HEALTH

Brain power regain

Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland

B

risk walking for only two hours a week helps brain power in women, so say the boffins at the University of British Columbia. This explains so much. I am often left wondering why I am always right. In fact I may run the chance of overcharging. I may burn out. Foggy minds; we all come across them. Muddled, vague, spaced out people. Action may be required. The two key factors to brain power are aerobic exercise and sleep. You can do both without cost and what is more you can do both from home. Exercise = breathing heavily enough to make talking difficult - which is fine. How often do you pass a walker breathing heavily? Or maybe the better question is “how often do you pass a walker?” Often that walk is more about putting one leg in front of the other. Mobilising the joints rather than raising the heart rate. It is not a weakness to huff and puff more a sign that you are putting some effort in. In the same way we do not like to sweat. I would be surprised if I returned home from walking my two dogs without damp patches. It would be a sign I hadn’t moved fast enough.

Brain Power Plan: 2 hours of aerobic exercise every week and lots of sleep Once that walk is over you will have a calm energy and that will promote the next part of the Brain Power Plan. Sleep. You can instantly be forgiven for not knowing anything about the hippocampus. Together with the neo-cortex – not nearly such a catchy name – they transfer anything new we have learned and store it in our memory for future use. To store new information you must absorb it into your hippocampus at least an hour before bed and then, to process it, sleep. The hippocampus – the computer of the body – shrinks as we age. Fact. They have studied this and have used MRI scans to find this out. Your Brain Power Plan. Exercise - 2 hours of puffing (aerobic), in any form, weekly. Sleep – lots. I, for one, do not want to shrink in any department, do you? T

he South make a welcome return to the UK venues when they return with a ‘Sweet Refrains – Spring/ Summer 2014 UK Tour’. Ex members of The Beautiful South, Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler will be singing many of those hits including A Little Time, Don’t Marry Her, Rotterdam, Good as Gold, Perfect 10 and many more from the back catalogue. This 9 piece band will also be performing several songs from their wonderfully received debut album as The South, Sweet Refrains.

HistorY: from The

Housemartins to The Beautiful South to The South Formed in 1988, The Beautiful South had a string of hit singles such as Old Red Eyes Is Back, Rotterdam, Don’t Marry Her, Perfect 10 and Number One single A Little Time. Their greatest hits album, Carry On Up The Charts, was one of the fastest-selling albums in UK history, entering at Number One and staying there for weeks, becoming one of the country’s most popular albums ever. After 20 years, ten studio albums, five greatest hits compilations, thirty-four chart singles, 15 million record sales worldwide and performing in front of millions of fans, when time was called on The Beautiful South in 2008, not everyone was ready to leave the party.

Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler, two of the three lead singers with the band, were having too much fun to get out the pipe and slippers, and so The South was formed. Joining the duo were fellow mainstays from the original touring band: keyboard wizard Damon Butcher and the potent horn section of Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson that brought so much to the live shows. A globally successful band, members of The South have performed these songs in front of hordes of fans from Hull to Houston. They love the material and know what will keep the fans happy. Still as Beautiful as they ever were, The South continue the legacy with their own vibrantly singable and acerbically witty pop. The South are rightly extremely proud of their history - and their future looks very bright..
