FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

District 2’s generous spirit shines bright during the holiday season

Greetings BSD2 Families, Students, Staff and Community Members,

This holiday season, I would like to reflect on our BSD2 Community’s generous spirit. The selfless giving of our staff and community emphasizes to me how much we care about each other in District 2, and how our presence in each other’s lives is one of the most important presents we can give or receive.

Each fall, our school social workers and classroom teachers work together to identify students from families that may not be able to afford gifts, and anonymously invite them to share their children’s wish lists and clothing needs. BSD2 staff then volunteer to spend about $30 purchasing gifts for each student, and return their donations wrapped and ready to deliver to the students’ families before winter break.

This year, BSD2 staff generously donated around $6,500 in gifts for 217 students from 82 different families in need through this annual Giving Tree program.

District 2 is also one of the many supporters of the Village of Bensenville’s annual Holiday Toy Drive, which collected donations of more than 2,000 new toys this year. The Village

gives these gifts to local children identified by the school districts on a need basis, and District 2 connected 175 of its families with the Village’s toy drive this year.

Similarly, the District also supports Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary Club’s annual Coats4Kids campaign, which provided more than 500 new winter coats for BSD2 students in need earlier this fall. Again, donations came from throughout our community, and references came from District 2 staff looking to ensure that every student had a warm coat to wear this winter.

Thank you, District 2, for the powerful impact of your everyday presence in the lives of our students and families, and for so generously giving to our families in need. I wish you nothing but the best this holiday season. May 2023 be the best year yet for us all!

Sincerely, DR.

SPOTLIGHT ON: People’s Resource Center

Since 1975, People’s Resource Center (PRC) has been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County.

Nearly 30,000 DuPage residents rely on PRC for help each year. With a team of over 2,600 volunteers, we offer nutritious food and other basic necessities like clothes and rent assistance for people facing tough times. We also connect people with resources—education and tutoring, jobs, technology, art, a caring community—to create a future of hope and opportunity for all.

PRC is able to provide these services because of the generosity and support from our neighbors. More than 2,600 volunteers work with our small staff offering time, skills and resources to help their neighbors. Donors contribute food, clothing, books, computers, and money to support our work. The majority of our support comes from caring neighbors right here in DuPage County.

People’s Resource Center community exists to respond to basic human needs, promote dignity and justice, and create a future of hope and opportunity for the residents of DuPage County, Illinois through discovering and sharing personal and community resources.

For more inforn about PRC, including additional services offered and volunteer opportunities, visit peoplesrc.org or call 630.682.5402. PRC currently has two locations, in Wheaton at 201 S. Naperville Rd, and in Westmont at 104 Chestnut Ave.

DEAR WARRIOR

BSD2

students

create holiday cards for soldiers stationed overseas

This fall, BSD2 students created greeting cards for those serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The District-wide project was in support of the Holiday Cards for our Military Challenge. Addressed “Dear Warrior,” the cards were sent to soldiers stationed overseas to spread some cheer while they were away from their homes and families for the holidays.

BUILDING AN IDEA

Stanford professor brings the ‘Communication Effect’ to District 2

This fall, District 2 kicked off an exciting partnership with Dr. Jeff Zwiers, an acclaimed Stanford University professor and the author of The Communication Effect - Infusing Learning with Authentic Communication.

Dr. Zwiers was the keynote speaker for the District’s backto-school institute day in August, speaking in depth on the topic of “Infusing Learning with Authentic Communication.”

In November, he returned to District 2 for two days to lead eight demonstration lessons and a Bensenville University professional development workshop on the topic of “building an idea.” Throughout his lessons, Dr. Zwiers worked directly with BSD2 teachers and students to personally introduce his approach to instruction to the District.

Oracy and integrating authentic communication within their instruction are focal points of BSD2 teachers’ professional development efforts this year. They will continue to work with Dr. Zwiers throughout the year to turn students into “Idea Builders” by fostering authentic communication in their classrooms.

“Now Hiring” and “Help Wanted” signs litter the landscape these days, so much so they have largely become background noise for many people.

We hope, though, that you’ve noticed our employment signs as you’ve visited our schools recently. That’s because they make an important point that sets us apart from the rest: We need you!

Other places’ unfilled positions may mean delayed delivery times, sparsely stocked shelves, cold French fries, etc.

Our unfilled positions impact the quality of your neighborhood schools and the daily educational experiences of your community’s children.

If concern for kids motivates you, and if you’re driven by a sense of civic pride, consider applying for one of our open positions, which include:

• Teachers

• Classroom Aides

• Substitutes

• Bus Drivers

• Lunch and Recess Supervisors

• Crossing Guards

Join us in Learning & Growing Together!

POWER SCHOOL

Learn how to use the Parent Portal for the District’s new student information system

This year, District 2 has transitioned to a new student information system – PowerSchool. This transition consolidated several systems across the District, combining data management, the grading system, and the parent portal all into one platform.

District 2 completed this transition in December when it opened its new PowerSchool Parent Portal, which is an online system that provides parents access to their students’ schedules, attendance, assignments and grades.

Letters providing more information on the PowerSchool Parent Portal were sent home with elementary students and mailed to middle school students’ home addresses in December. Online resources to help parents create and use their accounts are available at bsd2.org/powerschool, and in-person tutorials will be offered as follows:

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17 | Blackhawk Middle School | 2-3 pm

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18 | Tioga School | 9-10 am

THURSDAY, JANUARY 19 | W.A. Johnson School | 6:30-7:30 pm

MORE ABOUT POWERSCHOOL

PowerSchool supports more than 45 million students globally, including those at Fenton High School. Its userfriendly interface makes it a much easier system to navigate for all users, particularly parents, and its numerous customized reports will help the District identify trends and measure their impact in areas such as attendance, discipline, and grading.

SEE THROUGH THE SMOKE

Dynamic’ speaker will edutain parents about teen vaping and tobacco use

Robert Hackenson Jr., a youth motivational speaker from Dynamic Influence, will edutain parents and students about teen vaping and tobacco use when he visits Blackhawk Middle School in January.

Mr. Hackenson will deliver his highly interactive presentation during a parent education night at 6:30 p.m. January 17 in the Blackhawk auditorium. He will also share it with sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students during in-school assemblies on January 17 and 18.

Mr. Hackenson’s presentations feature mind magic and illusions, and will focus on the risks and misperceptions around vaping and tobacco use. They touch upon the commonly known dangers, then dive deeper into much less known medical studies and other eye-opening information to provide students with facts they need to make welleducated decisions.

PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

Upcoming presentations will focus on toxic families and rational dialogue

Bensenville School District 2 and Fenton High School’s Padres Unidos are partnering this year to present a yearlong parent education series facilitated by Chicago-area psychologist Dr. Ferney Ramirez (Spanish) and YWCA clinical therapist Theresa Taylor (English).

The fourth offering in the series will be held from 6:30-8 pm. Thursday, January 19, at Fenton High School, located at 1000 W. Green Street in Bensenville. Titled Toxic Families: How to Avoid Being One, the presentation will help parents create a climate of dialogue, respect and affection so that their children can grow up emotionally stable. The fifth presentation in the series will be held from 6-8 pm. at Blackhawk Middle School, located at 250 S. Church Road in Bensenville. Titled Rational Dialogue: The Art of Knowing How to Correct Children’s Emotional Language, the presentation will help parents effectively communicate with their children using rational dialogue to facilitate positive interactions.

These presentations will be offered in English and Spanish. Childcare and food will be provided.

5ESSENTIALS

Annual survey allows students, parents and teachers to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions

Each year, District 2 administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey to provide an opportunity for teachers, students, and parents across the District to have a role in improving their schools.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive assessment of school organizational culture with actionable reports to help drive school improvement on five “essential” indicators of success:

• Effective Leaders

• Collaborative Teachers

• Involved Families

• Supportive Environment

• Ambitious Instruction

Between Wednesday, February 1, and the end of March, teachers, students and parents will be asked to take the 15-minute research-based 5Essentials survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s climate and learning conditions.

On February 1, parents can visit bsd2.org/5essentials to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey.

FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Fenton Families and valued community partners,

Fenton continues to be a hub for our community. Thank you to everyone who attended our Fall Play and Winter Holiday Concert. Our students love performing in front of a live audience. We also want to thank everyone who donated to the Bensenville Community Foundation during Giving Tuesday. Below are a few important updates for our community:

Incoming Freshmen Parent Night

We are excited to invite parents at Blackhawk Middle School and Wood Dale Junior High to attend our Incoming Freshman Parent Night on Thursday, January 12. Principal Bentsen, our teachers, and our coaches will be available to showcase all Fenton has to offer.

We are so excited to meet and welcome the Fenton Class of 2027! You should have already received information in the mail and via email. This is a friendly reminder to mark your calendars and join us to learn more about our transition process.

School Board Leadership

I want to give a special shout out to our Fenton Board of Education for their outstanding effort during a major professional development conference we commonly refer to as Triple I – the Joint Annual Conference between the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA), and the Illinois Association of School Business Officials (IASBO).

I’m proud to say our Fenton board members were leaders in the room. When presenters offered their recommendations, we were often the first to say we already do that and to provide examples of our good practices.

Career Pathways

Fenton is putting more emphasis on career pathways via career treks, guest speakers, internships, and more. These opportunities allow students to envision themselves in those jobs and then work toward the career of choice while still in high school. We encourage our families and families of future students to dream big and then express your goals when you get here because we might already have a corporate partner who can show you the way.

MTSS

We want all of our students to be successful at Fenton, both academically and socialemotionally. MTSS stands for Multiple Tier Support System and it has been in place at Fenton for many years, but we are bolstering the program to address learning loss that lingers from the pandemic. MTSS is systematic planning that allows Fenton staff to work alongside our students and families while using research-based, and data-driven methods for removing learning barriers on a case-by-case basis.

Referendum

Thank you to everyone who voted in the November General Election. Our building referendum was not successful, but this was a real-life example of democracy for our students to witness. Those experiences are an important part of learning. Unfortunately, the issues that plague our building and impact our students will continue and will get worse. We still need to face these challenges together as a community. For the time being, we will evaluate our options.

@FentonHS
Let’s go BISON!

Fenton Students EARN 5s ON AP EXAMS

Congratulations to the 20 remarkable Fenton students and alums who earned 5 out of 5 points on their Advanced Placement (AP) exams last spring. A high score, especially a 5 out of 5, means the students have earned college credit while still in high school. Eleven of them are returning students with more opportunities to earn college credit. Among the 11 returning students, two of them earned a 5 on multiple exams! Each student received a congratulatory yard sign and Take 5 candy bar.

FENTON STUDENT JOINS ISBE STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL

Congratulations to Sarah Guerrero Gorostieta for being appointed to the Illinois State Board of Education Student Advisory Council. She is now a voice for more than 2 million students while reviewing proposed legislation with elected officials. The council consists of only 25 students from across Illinois.

State Superintendent Dr. Carmen Ayala visited Fenton in June, at which point Sarah and a classmate gave a presentation on education from a student perspective. That positive interaction led to the ISBE Student Advisory Council contacting Sarah and inviting her to apply for a seat.

Sarah thanked her parents for their support, as well as her speech team coaches, Ms. Nicole Hendricks and Ms. Melissa Feinberg, and Band Director Mr. Garett George for helping her grow her confidence.

FOOTBALL PLAYER EARNS LEADERSHIP AWARD from

the Chicago Bears

Congratulations to Dorien Vazquez of our Bison Football Team. He was on field at the October 13 Chicago Bears game receiving the Latino Heritage Youth Leadership Award. He also was interviewed on Univision at halftime.

Only two high school students were selected for this honor. According to the Bears, the Latino Heritage Youth Leader Award recognizes exceptional high school student athletes of Latino heritage that display outstanding leadership on and off the field, excel in the classroom, and make a positive impact in their school and local community through service to others.

The Chicago Bears praised Dorien for his 3.6 grade point average, being a leader in three sports, earning All State Academic Honors, and for his volunteer time with Habitat for Humanity. Thank you Chicago Bears for recognizing this incredible young man, and thank you Coach Lynch for your invaluable mentorship.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD

Congratulations to the girls varsity volleyball team for setting a new school record with their 25 victories in a single season, surpassing the record of 24 wins set back in 2018.

REPEATS AS REGIONAL CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to our Fenton boys soccer team for winning their second consecutive Class 2A Regional Championship. Under the guidance of Coach Vic Ruiz and his staff, the Bison defeated ITW Speer Academy 2-1 on October 21 to win regionals. They also won regionals last year, in 2021. Congratulations to all the players, the managers, their families, and our coaches.

HOLIDAY LIGHT RECYCLING PROGRAM

The Village of Bensenville has partnered with Elgin Recycling once again to offer free holiday light recycling to Bensenville residents. Drop-off boxes are located at Bensenville Village Hall and the Public Works Department. Boxes will be accessible to the public during regular business hours until the end of February. All types of holiday string lights, working or not, are accepted.

VILLAGE’S CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING PROGRAM

Bensenville’s 2023 Tree Recycling Program runs through the month of January at the Public Works Facility. If you do not wish to send your Christmas tree to the landfill and desire a green solution, drop it off with us for recycling. Donated trees are chipped and used for local landscaping. Residents can drop off their Christmas tree at the mulch bin (by the Public Works salt dome) if they wish to recycle it.

Only live/natural trees without flocking are accepted (no garland or wreaths). Because the trees are mulched, all tinsel, ornaments, lights, and stands must be removed. Plastic bags used for transport should also be removed before putting trees in the stalls.
