A perfect dawn chorus
Awildlifeenthusiastfrom Norfolk, whomadea name forhimselfwithhisperfect 70-minuterecordingofan entiredawnchorus,has released adigital version to appeal to modern-daylisteners. Andrew Flintham, amusician, musicproducer, voice-over artistandactor from Newton Flotman, hopesthenew release will encouragelistenersto appreciateand protecttheir naturalsurroundings,and saysthebirdsong recording, whichiscompletelyunsullied by noisepollution,offers arare opportunitytofeelcompletely immersedinnature. “BrecklandsDawnChorusisa uniquerecordingthat wasmade injust onetake, very early one morninginbeautiful woodland in Norfolk,” he explains.“You can hearan arrayofbirds,withinan uninterrupted wholechorus,and formanyofuswho spend much of ourtimeinfront of computers, itoffers auniqueescapefrom our busy andstressfullives. “Now thetrack hasbeen digitalised, everymomentof birdsong,from theblackbirdsto therobins,is even sharperand clearer thanit wasbefore. Youcan even hearthesound ofa muntjacdeerinthe vicinityand a bumble beeflittingpast.” Thetrack,which is available todownload,willappeal to those whohavefeltdrawn to natureduringthepandemic,as wellasothers seekingstillness andcalmduringthesestressful times. Even back in 1993, when therecording wasfirstmade by Andrew,capturingthepure soundofthe dawn chorus withoutinadvertentlypicking up extraneoussoundwas challenging. "It took aboutninetakes beforewefinallyachievedit.But it wouldbecompletelyimpossible to makearecordinglikethis todaybecausethere isjust too much noisepollution.Ihaveeven spenttimerecordingupinthe ScottishHighlands, butonevery occasion,whenIlistenedback afterwards, Icouldhear aroad or anairplanefar away inthe distance.”
