The face you look at in the mirror today has travelled down a long and winding road from childhood to adulthood. Our skin is exposed to environmental stress on a daily basis, which means it’s the most telling indicator of our age. As a woman enters perimenopause, usually in her early 40s, oestrogen production begins to decline and this also means a loss of collagen — the essential protein that puts the bounce in your bones, muscles and blood and which comprises three quarters of your skin and a third of the protein in your body. If you’re perimenopausal, you might have noticed slightly deeper hollows around your eyes and more pronounced frown lines across the brow and between the eyes. There might be a few brown marks mottling your complexion and your jawline might not be quite as sharp as it was. So what can you do about this? There are a range of fantastic, non-invasive treatments available in skin clinics and good salons all over the country. They don’t involve needles or anaesthetic and are great for newbies to clinical facials. One of the best known is Microcurrent; the most familiar brand is CACI, but there are man ny others. Gently stimulating muscl le and ATP (the energy of cells), it works brilliantly alongside Radio Frequency, another tool in the electrical family that comfortably y heats the dermis and encourages s new collagen. It firms skin, too, and is great for face or body. Slightly bolder but with outstanding results is micro needling. Tiny perforations made e with a pen device put the skin into emergency repair mode. Again, this stimulates collagen production. With specific additives, micro needling is perfect for open pores, scarring and general restoration of a glowing complexion. And finally, Resurfacing is the facial treatment for all skin types, as it brings forward new cells that are fresh, full of water, bright and add luminosity to the skin. Cell turnover slows as we age and Resurfacing, using specific acids for individual tasks, brings back that younger complexion and better skin health for the future.
