Health - a guide to good immunity

A Guide to Good Immunity

A healthy immune system is our core protection from infections, so what can you do to ensure it’s in peak condition?

You are what you eat

Focus on eating the ‘rainbow’ of colourful fruit and veg such as leafy greens, broccoli, peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, citrus fruit and berries — all rich in vitamins A and C. Vitamin D is vital too, so include oily fish like salmon, tuna, kippers, herring or trout, plus eggs and mushrooms. Limit pro-inflammatory foods such as sugar, omega-6 dense vegetable oils, caffeine and alcohol.

Happy guts!

Did you know that up to 80% of your immune system is thought to reside in your gut? Give this a boost by eating foods that act as prebiotics; bananas, chicory, apples, artichokes, leeks and asparagus. Add fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, sparingly to your diet and top up with a good daily probiotic capsule.

Water of life

Drinking plenty of water keeps you properly hydrated, which encourages good circulation and ensures immune cells can get to where they need to be, fast! Water is also essential for healthy skin.

Herbal healing

Your immune system is designed to prevent the invasion of infection, but if you do succumb to an unwelcome bug, and your symptoms last over a week or two, taking the herbal remedy Echinacea can lift your immunity.

Nighty night

Sleep allows your immune system to repair and recuperate. Try keeping a notepad by your bed to empty your mind of thoughts before you doze off. A herbal helper such as Dormeasan, which contains a combination of Valerian and Hops, can help bring sounder sleep.

A laughing matter

Your mood can influence your immune function. Laughing is shown to have positive, immuneenhancing effects, partly down to the stress-relief. Adopting a more positive mindset could be a useful first step in helping to support your health.
