The powerful act of voting By Ellen Cohen There is nothing like the feeling a voter experiences after marking their ‘X’ on a ballot. It is all at once a feeling of power and satisfaction. An act nobody can perform on your behalf, it is also private and confidential, secret even from your closest loved ones. Even for the most skeptical but still patriotic, it fulfills the responsibility we have as Canadians. If you haven’t had the voting experience, or only vote in occasional elections, try it this time. Those big issues you’ve always been so passionate about? Marking your ‘X’ on a ballot is the way to have influence. Not convinced your vote will make a difference? Look at it this way: if you don’t vote, you have handed your power over to someone else. You allow others to successfully vote in a platform you might oppose. Parents and grandparents of 18+ yearolds – please do what you can to encourage those future leaders of our country to head to the polls.
Register to vote: if you are not a registered voter and/or do not receive a voter information card in the mail, you may go to a local Elections Canada office by September 14th, the Tuesday before Election Day and complete your registration. Alternatively, you can register at your polling station on Election Day if you have accepted ID or have someone to vouch for you.
Ways to vote: • Vote on Election Day at your assigned polling station on Election Day, Monday, September 20, 2021. Code Red for Humanity By Ron Reid Calling a Code Red for humanity sounds like the trailer for a Hollywood block-buster. But in fact this warning was issued by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in response to a massive report released last month by the UN climate change panel. Their report is based on a review of over 14,000 published scientific papers, endorsed by 191 countries around the globe. The report echoes earlier findings, except that many of the uncertainties no longer apply. It concludes that the emissions causing global warming are “unequivocally caused by human activities”, and predicts that we will cross the threshold of 1.5 degrees of warming within the next 20 years. That is the point when scientists expect that major climatic changes will occur, causing widespread damage. What I find especially troubling is that so far the global climate has warmed by only 1.1 degrees, and the impacts of that warming have been faster and more dramatic than earlier science had predicted. For the second summer in a row, British Columbia and California have suffered incredible wildfires. The same in the boreal forests of Russia. And this year, wildfires have also plagued Greece and Turkey. Southern B.C. has experienced “heat domes” with record-setting temperatures; the Canadian Prairies and adjacent states are undergoing drought conditions not seen since the 1930s. Germany and Belgium have seen record rainfalls and floods; Greenland and
© Can Stock Photo / skylight
Antarctica are losing glacier ice at rates not seen for thousands of years, causing the first inching upwards of ocean levels. If global warming of only 1.1 degrees can create this litany of bad news, what will it do at 1.5 degrees, or at 2 degrees, the more likely outcome within the next few decades? Already, the scientists are saying that many of the changes we are seeing are “locked in” and will only get worse in future. I don’t want to sound alarmist, but it is past time that we all wake up to the severity of this challenge and give it the attention it deserves. For those who live and work in western Canada, that wake-up call has certainly been felt this summer. But it is a problem that demands attention from all of us, especially as the federal election campaign rolls out. Many of us are already doing what we can to reduce our share of carbon emissions, but for a challenge this massive, we absolutely need government leadership to make the
big changes needed in our economy. One of the most striking statements by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was: “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.” That’s not great news for Canada, since we are the fourth-largest producer of fossil fuels in the world; and particularly bad news for Alberta, which is especially dependent on this resource. But it is time to face the music and push forward the transition to sustainable forms of energy. And it is time for all of us to demand that our governments take on that essential leadership role to do so. A regular contributor to The Villager, Ron Reid is a natural heritage consultant and the co-founder and former executive director of The Couchiching Conservancy. He has written more than 30 magazine articles and co-authored three books. He lives in Washago with his wife, Janet Grand.

From the Publisher:
Don’t dare dismiss the horror of COVID-19 At the time of writing this column, my healthy, vibrant, extremely physically fit twenty-something grandson is in bed, very ill for the 3rd day. His COVID-19 test came back this morning. Positive. His mother and brother are vaccinated. He is not. He made his own adult decision to forego the jab. God willing, he will recover completely, without long-term effects that will harm his young body. His mother and brother have been tested and await results, as does his other grandmother. As advised by the Health Unit, immediate steps were taken: 1. Mother and brother alerted everyone with whom they have had contact. 2. The grandmother who had direct contact will do the same. 3. I had direct contact with that grandmother so I alerted everyone I had been near since having contact with her. With the exception of one brother in Toronto, and this grandson who is now ill, my family members are all doublevaccinated. As careful as we’ve all tried to be, it appears somewhere we failed. We must now ask ourselves questions and rethink our health protocols. Obviously our anxiety is great. The fear for my grandson’s health is immeasurable. In early July, I received a scathing letter from a Villager reader. She was furious that I had suggested (on page 4 of the July issue) the vaccine was shown to be more than moderately successful. I had also written
“those who continue to promote scary or silly vaccine conspiracy theories are now completely irrelevant to me. I am not listening.” This reader said she was disgusted with me. She called The Villager a piece of trash and said that nobody is irrelevant. I gathered from the dozens of ‘news’ stories she subsequently sent to me that she is a COVID-denier opposed to getting vaccinated. Today, I unequivocally take back my comments about conspiracy theorists being irrelevant. COVID-19 deniers, fake news distributors, private individuals included, are very relevant. They are scary, dangerous, irresponsible and selfish. They abet illness and death. They helped to convince a bright but vulnerable young man, one who relies on social media for information, that because he is strong and healthy, COVID couldn’t hurt him. Alas, it can and it did. I address the following to the reader who wrote her scathing letter, and to all likeminded people: While my daughter and her other son live through the horror of COVID-19, a nightmare watching my grandson fight this despicable virus; and while they wait for their own test results, do you want to tell me that this is just a flu; that COVID is a hoax; a worldwide conspiracy of drug companies and wicked governments; that conspiracies are not harmful? If you continue to say and believe any of these things, stay away from me and my family.

Visit the Community Calendar on the Severn website. It`s easy to post events and convenient for residents to use. Please note there will be COVID protocols in effect at all community events until further notice. Your input will help develop services that meet your needs. You can also join one of the community groups to get involved with your local government and make a difference. Search ‘Have Your Say’ on the Severn website. The following is a brief description of candidates for the September 20, 2021 election. Because of the short time frame between the time the election was announced and the print schedule of The Villager, we have not had the opportunity to interview the candidates. I care deeply about our community and about the future of our country. Every Canadian deserves equitable and affordable access to safe housing, higher education, truly universal healthcare, and quality child and elder care. Get your bids ready! Art Auction 1:00 p.m., September 4th If you haven’t taken the time to view the Washago Art Club’s painted ice cream parlour chairs displayed at the new Washago Art Gallery - do so over the next few days. They’ll be auctioned off on Saturday, September 4th at 1:00 p.m. The chairs are this year`s edition of the Washago Art Club outdoor art exhibit. Members worked on this project during the past winter and spring while we were either locked down or at least distancing from just about everyone. The hard to find ice cream parlour chairs were found from all over the province. Washago resident, Craig Welbourne said, ‘Some of the chairs had seen better days and had to be restored…all had to have metal seats measured and installed and sanded; then sealed with a primer of aluminium paint. Thanks to Glen Hudgin for his help.” As with all previous outdoor art projects, the artists created a wide spectrum of original art that will one day soon grace lucky bidders’ homes.
To view the chairs, head over to the gallery at 3380 Muskoka St., Washago. Enter through the laneway beside the Century 21 office on Muskoka Street. Pre-bids are welcome. The gallery will be open on Thursday, September 2nd from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and will re-open at 10:00 a.m. on the day of the auction.

Curling is also a very social sport and a great way to meet new people.” To encourage new members, a 30% discount on fees for the adult leagues is being offered to new members for the 21/22 season. The club also runs a vibrant youth league. Curling is a very accessible sport: all ages; most physical abilities; and for anyone with a set budget for recreation. Beginners need only wear warm, loose clothing and a pair of running shoes – clean and with a good grip. Eventually, curlers who decide to take it up enthusiastically will likely invest in a pair of curling shoes and a broom. There is a nearby retailer that sells reasonably priced beginner kits. You can learn to curl through the City of Orillia recreation program, at the Club’s facility. At the Club there are options to pay to play for $20/session with seasonal or part-seasonal membership options. The Curling Club open house takes place at Barnfield Point Recreation Centre at 550 Atherley Rd. No registration is required. A greater, global understanding By Courtney Baker The Couchiching Conservancy is your local Land Trust. Our work helps to mitigate the effects of climate change by storing carbon, cooling lands and waters and maintaining healthy wetlands to avoid flooding and so much more. We also keep a pulse on the world-wide issue of climate change. Regarding the planet, the big environmental news in August is a new IPCC report which you will find at (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/#SPM). Those who read everything there is about climate change may know exactly what this is, or you have possibly heard about IPCC and stored those letters away with all of the other acronyms we need in modern life, like FAQ, GMO or of course, KFC. The IPCC is the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change. It is a team of volunteer scientists organized under the umbrella of the United Nations and represents the best western science current understanding of climate change. You may have read all reports, or only heard of them now, either way I encourage you to read it, to learn from it and to stay informed. But, if you don’t have time, for a report big enough to anchor a boat, here are some shortcuts you can take and still learn a lot. For the readers: There are technically two reports, the full report, a breezy 4,000 pages, and the Summary for Policymakers; 40 pages. If you want a Continued on page 15
15
thorough understanding, do the Summary. If all you have to spare is five minutes, try the excitingly titled ‘Headline Statements from the Summary for Policymakers’. It is only one and a half pages, point form and plain language. You can’t go wrong. For the visual learners: The IPCC releases press conference slides and presentation slides for people to use. These have all of the key graphs, quotes and figures from the main report, without the technical language, cumbersome referencing and text. They are illustrated, and you will move through it quickly. For the clickers: use the Interactive Atlas. The Atlas has a number of filters for time, temperature, etc. that you can apply and see projected changes through time. You can even save what you make as a PDF. A click around the atlas will give you the information you are looking for. For those who like it all: look at your region. The IPCC makes Regional Fact Sheets, ours being ‘North and South America’. It’s enough to inform you, but not enough to overwhelm you. With a mix of text, maps and graphs this will keep you looking clever at dinner parties. We know that the work of The Couchiching Conservancy is essential to the health of our region and the people who live there, but, it is also important to recognize how your support for the environment fits into the larger picture of a world facing climate crisis. Courtney Baker is the Administrative Assistant at The Couchiching Conservancy, a local land trust dedicated to protecting nature for all future generations. www.couchichingconserv.ca

Heat stroke or hyperthermia caused by elevated body temperature (greater than 39.4°C) is very dangerous. Watch for elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, abnormal gum colour or bruising, lethargy, disorientation, or seizures. Hyperthermia is an immediate medical emergency. And as summer ends…watch your pets around cookouts. Corn cobs; chicken, rib or steak bones; empty skewers – keep them all away from your dog. Also, beware of any struggle dogs may have getting out of the pool. Always stay in close proximity and be their lifeguard.

Join the Berry Patch The Washago Gravenhurst Elderberries Choir The Elderberries Choir had to shut things down during the pandemic but are now ready to begin to sing again. Management of the choir has worked hard to ready themselves for the new season particularly focused on health and safety. The protocols now in place have the approval of the local health unit. The next order of business is for choir director, Louise Jardine to recruit new members to fill the few spots that are available. Qualifications include a joy of singing and an interest in belonging to a community-oriented organization. There is no audition, solo expertise is not necessary, and both novice and seasoned singers are welcome, as are Snow Birds.. Rehearsals are held Tuesday afternoons at Trinity United Church or, during warm weather the Gravenhurst Wharf. Current members hale from across the region including from Gravenhurst, Washago,

Put that fabulous woman on a pedestal Everyone knows at least one very special woman. A quiet over-achiever. A woman with an endless spirit of giving who is thoroughly involved in her community; the one everyone calls upon when they need help in business, fundraising or planning. Maybe it’s your boss, one of your staff, or a neighbour. Now is the time to recognize the contributions that woman makes. Hop onto the Orillia Business Women’s Association (OBWA) website and fill out a nomination form the Woman of The Year 2021. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, September 15, 2021. www. orilliabusinesswomen.com. Nominees may reside in Severn, Oro, Ramara, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, or Orillia. Until last year, the Woman of the Year event was celebrated at a gala dinner and formal ceremony. This event was cancelled and replaced with a virtual event. It worked out very well. Shelle Hossack of OBWA said “It was a huge success in 2020. People tuned in from
far and wide, including family members from anywhere on earth who were able to catch it live. We had over 4,000 views.” Because the event was virtual, the usual fuss made over the nominees wasn’t possible. However, they made up for some of the lost glitz by delivering gift boxes to all Women of The Year and Young Woman of The Year nominees. Shelle said the nominees greatly appreciated the gesture. For this year, even though there is a likelihood that live events will be permitted later this year, there is no guarantee. The 2021 celebrations will be held online – guaranteed not to be cancelled for any reason. The event will take place on December 8th. More details, including the names of the nominees, will be announced as the date gets closer. The evening will also celebrate the Young Woman of the Year award. Nominations for this category come from teachers. Qualified nominees have high scholastic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities and volunteer work.

Stuffed summer squash By Chef Becky Chef Becky Lennerton is the proprietor of Black River Food Company and a teacher in our region for Loblaw Companies Limited.
If you’re looking for a dish on the lighter side of BBQ meals, this is one you should try. Ingredients: • 1 medium sized yellow or green zucchini or squash • 1 cup cooked wild rice (you could add cooked mushrooms and/or green onion to this) • 6 large cooked shrimp per boat Method: In a small roasting pan place whole zucchini or squash. Cook until just fork tender. Slice in the middle horizontally so that you have two halves – to create ‘boats’. Remove seeds and scoop out the flesh. Drain. In a medium bowl, mix cooked rice, curry sauce and the flesh from the squash or zucchini. Add and stir in cooked shrimp until coated.
• ½ cup curry sauce (mild or vindaloo) • ¼ cup of each of chopped basil, coriander, and mint • Red baby bell pepper, sliced • 1 fresh lime, halved • Crumbled feta Fill each boat with mixture including the coated shrimp and top with sliced bell pepper and then the crumbled feta. Preheat the BBQ with one side on and hot; the other side off. Place filled squash boats on the ‘off’ side and cook for 15-20 minutes until hot through and through and the cheese is melted. Garnish with lime.
