Sportsmans Warehouse welcomes players and spectators to the 2014

Villager School Sevens Rugby Tournament

What an incredible record for a schools tournament – 46 years old and still going from strength to strength. Sportsmans Warehouse is delighted once again to sponsor this highly popular event on the schools’ rugby calendar. Like the organizers, we appreciate the incredible benefits that Sevens rugby confers on young players, benefits of speed, skill and fitness. All these help produce players of high quality and enthusiasm. We are grateful that it was the founders of our company, including the inestimable Dave Stewart, who realized the value of Sevens decades ago and set up this amazing annual tournament. They had vision and persistence, which are shared by today’s organizers. A heartfelt thank-you to these organizers. A huge welcome to everybody, from players to coaches and supporters. Let’s enjoy an unforgettable day of rugby at Brookside. As we say at Sportsmans Warehouse - “Winning starts here!”

Kevin Hodgson

Chief Executive Officer

Words of inspiration from the tournament founder As I write this, uppermost in my mind is the fact that Sevens Rugby has at last been recognised as both a Commonwealth and Olympic Games Sport. I am also extremely pleased that our young BlitzBokke, captained by SACS boy, Kyle Brown, won the Gold Medal by beating hot favourites New Zealand in the final. New Zealand has embraced Sevens rugby and doesn’t it show in the quality of their 15-man rugby? Not just ‘bashing it up rugby’ but skilful, unafraid attack from all parts of the field. Weren’t the Sharks exposed by the Crusaders in the Super Cup Rugby Semi-Final in July? Looking at the history of Sevens rugby in the Western Cape, we remember that Louis de Waal (ex UCT and WP loose forward and long-time President of False Bay) founded a WP Club Sevens that we all enjoyed. Unfortunately it was not supported by the WP Committee and it fell away. However the Villager Schools Sevens has survived for 46 years and for this we must thank our schools for their continued support. Our sponsors have provided a backbone for an ever-vibrant Villager Committee and I thank Bobby Blows and Peter Simmons who bring their special brand of rugby spirit to the Villager Schools Sevens. A last wish – a Western Province Club Sevens, with the Finals at Newlands with 45 000 people in the stands. How about that Mr President Thelo Wakefield? I know that you love the game as much as we all do and we would be providing more Gio Aplons and Cheslin Kolbes too! To the players, many of whom will be playing in their school jerseys for the last time, welcome to Villager. May you enjoy the day with us and enjoy your opponents too.

We look forward to hosting you. 2

Dave Stewart - Founder, Villager School Sevens and Villager Football Club Life President

We welcome all the teams and their supporters to the 46th Villager School Sevens We welcome all our visitors to the Villager Football Club, the second-oldest rugby club in South Africa and we trust you will all enjoy a memorable day of Sevens rugby. When this tournament was started 46 years ago, no one could have imagined that Sevens rugby would grow in popularity to such an extent that it is now included as an Olympic Games event. However the founding fathers of the Villager Schools Sevens had already recognized this exciting format of Sevens rugby. They believed that this was the ideal way for young rugby players to remember their last game of rugby in school colours and hence this tournament has always been played at the end of the Cape Town school rugby calendar. We wish all those young men who will be playing their last game of rugby in school colours a truly great day – play hard, fair and enjoy. We also hope that this year the weather will be kind, allowing for good fields and playing conditions. We thank our sponsors (who are listed on the back page of this programme) for their continued support every year. We would not be able to stage this event without you. Thank you! We thank all the teams for participating and wish you, your coaches and supporters, all the best for a wonderful day of rugby. Kind regards

Bobby Blows Sevens Director

Villager Sevens

46th Annual School Seven-a-Side Rugby Tournament - 5 September 2014 RULES AND REGULATIONS • The competition will be conducted entirely under the control of the Villager Football Club whose decision in all matters shall be final. • Games will be played under Rugby Union Laws. • The team that scores will kick off. • The competition will be played on the knock-out system. • The winning side receives the Villager Sevens Trophy. • The duration of play will be seven minutes each way and ten minutes each way in the Final. There will be an interval of one minute at half-time. The Plate Final will be contested seven minutes each way with a one-minute interval. • In the event of a draw, the teams will change ends and, after a one-minute interval, continue for five-minute spells until a score occurs, which will decide the match. This is sudden death: the first team to score wins the match. •

Each team will consist of seven players (three forwards and four backs) and three reserves. Up to three players may be replaced per match. No player, having played in a match and been replaced, may play in that match again, unless for a blood bin replacement. This is in the spirit of the tournament and must be strictly adhered to by all teams.

• All teams must submit their players’ and reserve players’ names to the control caravan before their first game. •

Those sides whom we asked, and who have been kind enough to assist with fielding ‘B’ and 'C' teams, must please note that your three teams - A, B and C - are completely separate. Each team will consist of seven players and up to three reserves. These teams must be clearly divided. The names of players in each side must be handed to the announcer’s caravan prior to play. No player, having played in either side, may switch teams during the course of the tournament. This will be monitored strictly throughout the day. This is in the spirit of the tournament and must be strictly adhered to by the coaches. Teams found guilty of contravening this regulation will be disqualified by the Tournament Director, whose decision in all matters shall be final.

• All teams must be complete and ready to take the field five minutes before the kick-off in each tie. • School officials must be responsible for their players’ valuables at all times. • Referees will be supplied for all games. Schools must provide touch-judges in all ties. 10

Junior Section news from the U20 Head Coach of the Villager Football Club

The 46th edition of the Villager School Sevens tournament will once again showcase the most exciting school talent in the Cape Town region. Often seen as a leveller, the shortened format of the game regularly serves up upset wins, with your less fashionable rugby schools coming to the fore and exacting wins over the more established rugby institutions. This year expectations are high, considering the calibre of participants entering this illustrious competition. A highlight on the high school rugby player’s calendar, the tournament could well see the future generation of BlitzBokke on display this afternoon. A huge thank-you goes out to the organizers and sponsors. Without their hard work and dedication, these events would not exist. The very best of luck to all participating teams!

Dave Mallett

Villager U20 Head Coach
