Sportsmans Warehouse welcomes players and spectators to the 2016

Villager School Sevens Rugby Tournament

What an incredible record for a schools tournament – 48 years old and still going from strength to strength. Sportsmans Warehouse is delighted once again to sponsor this highly popular event on the schools’ rugby calendar. Like the organizers, we appreciate the incredible benefits that Sevens rugby confers on young players, benefits of speed, skill and fitness. All these help produce players of high quality and enthusiasm. We are grateful that it was the founders of our company, including the inestimable Dave Stewart, who realized the value of Sevens decades ago and set up this amazing annual tournament. They had vision and persistence, which are shared by today’s organizers. A heartfelt thank-you to these organizers. A huge welcome to everybody, from players to coaches and supporters. Let’s enjoy an unforgettable day of rugby at Brookside. As we say at Sportsmans Warehouse - “Winning starts here!”

Kevin Hodgson

Chief Executive Officer

Words of inspiration from the tournament founder It’s Villager Schools Sevens time again and as I write this there is so much to look forward to in South African Rugby. You will know the result of the Lions - Hurricanes Final in Wellington New Zealand and of course how our BlitzBokke would have fared at the Olympics in Rio. But before those events, let me list some of the positives that thrill me. The stunning performances of the Golden Lions under Johan Ackerman and Warren Whitely - how about these two as coach and captain of the Boks? They are playing a successful brand of rugby that most of our coaches and rugby writers regard as reckless. The Stormers and Currie Cup teams (average age 23) have done so well under Robbie Fleck and John Dobson and their innovative coaching teams. They will learn from the mauling they received from the Chiefs. Gert Smal must be pleased with these appointments. The performance of our WP Craven Week teams stunned all their opponents with their daring, pacy, skilful, positive play. On a negative note, our SA Junior Boks were so boring and by losing to an innovative Argentine side by something close to 40 points, will need some radical rethinking. Smaller players - Kolbe as an example - are proving that rugby doesn’t only belong to brawn. Gio Aplon was one of our finest players for nearly ten years and yet our Bok coach of two years ago could not find a place for him in his 30-man squad. Last year, the Villager Schools Sevens final between Paarl Gym vs Bishops was brilliant, with Bishops, having lost a player in the first minute, holding Paarl Gym to 19-19 after full time - only to lose in extra time. Typical of the spirit of the day, Paarl Gym were first to congratulate Bishops for their gutsy performance. I thank Bobby Blows and Peter Simmons, two staunch Villagers, for their devotion to the success of the day and thanks to all the schools for their support over the past 48 years. WELCOME TO VILLAGERS.

Dave Stewart - Founder, Villager School Sevens and Villager Football Club Life President The Villager Motto - “Rugby for the Right Reasons” 3

We welcome all the teams and their supporters to the 48th Villager School Sevens We welcome all our visitors to the Villager Football Club, the second oldest rugby club in South Africa and we trust you will all enjoy a memorable day of Sevens Rugby with us this afternoon. When this tournament started 48 years ago no one could have imagined that Sevens Rugby would be an Olympic event. Sadly our BlitzBokke were not able to achieve Gold. However the Bronze medal is still wonderful recognition for our International Sevens players who kept Team South Africa in the medal count. Two of the BlitzBokke, including captain Kyle Brown, actually played in the Villager School Sevens tournament whilst still at school. Who knows, maybe today will see the launch of a few more ‘budding’ international Sevens stars. We thank our sponsors (who are listed on the back page of this programme) for their continued support every year. We would not be able to stage this event without you. Thank you! Since the inception of this event we have enjoyed the support of the Western Province Referee Association and we would like to thank them for the effective and friendly manner in which they continue to officiate. Thank you Refs – may your legs last the day. We thank all the teams for participating and wish you, your coaches and supporters, all the best for a great day of Sevens Rugby. Kind regards

Bobby Blows & Peter Simmons Sevens Directors

Message from Villagers Rugby With the Rio Olympic Games having hosted Sevens Rugby, the 2016 Villager School Sevens has taken on that much more significance. Who would have said 48 years ago, when this prestigious tournament was first played, that one day rugby players would be vying for a gold medal at an Olympic Games? Over the years the game of Sevens Rugby has become more and more competitive demanding exceptional skills and fitness levels. The pace of the game and the many tries scored always make for a thrilling spectacle. Each mistake is costly and you simply have to be on top of your game at all times. We at Villager FC are proud to have recognized Sevens as a special game way back in 1968 when Dave Stewart first introduced the Villager School Sevens Tournament. Many great Sevens’ players have cut their teeth at Brookside in Sevens Rugby whilst still at school and we are proud that the tournament has continued uninterrupted for all these years. A very warm welcome to all the participating teams, to all the players, the parents and supporters from the respective schools. May it be a most enjoyable tournament. To those players who are representing their schools for the last time, all of the very best for the future and may you continue to play this wonderful game of rugby. Kind regards

Villager Sevens

48th Annual School Seven-a-Side Rugby Tournament - 2 September 2016 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. The competition will be conducted entirely under the control of the Villager Football Club, whose decision in all matters shall be final. 2. Games will be played under Rugby Union Laws. 3. The team that scores will kick off. 4.

The competition will be based on an initial pool format of 8 sections of 3 teams who will play each other within their pool, the top 2 sides will progress to the main draw. The main draw is played in Southern suburbs & Northern suburbs sections. The bottom side will play in the the Plate draw. During the pool stages a Win = 2 points, Loss = 0 points, Draw = 1 point. In the event of a tie, the team with the best points differential will be the winner, in the event of the points differential being equal then the team which has scored the highest try total will then be declared the winner, in the event of this being equal then sudden death by drop goal.

5. The winning side of Southern & Northern Suburbs sections will progress to the Final and the winner of the final will receive the Villager Sevens Trophy. The winner of the Plate will receive the Plate Trophy. Trophies are also awarded for the winners of the South / North sections. 6.

The duration of play will be seven minutes each way and ten minutes each way in the Final. There will be an interval of one minute at half-time. The Plate Final will be contested seven minutes each way with a oneminute interval. IN THE EVENT OF A DRAW, THE TEAMS WILL CHANGE ENDS AND, AFTER A ONE-MINUTE INTERVAL, CONTINUE FOR FIVE-MINUTE SPELLS UNTIL A SCORE OCCURS, WHICH SHALL DECIDE THE MATCH. THIS IS SUDDEN DEATH: THE FIRST TEAM THAT SCORES WINS THE MATCH.

7. Each team will consist of seven players (three forwards and four backs) and five reserves. Rolling reserves can be used. This is in the spirit of the tournament and must be strictly adhered to by all teams. 8. All teams must submit their players’ and reserve players’ names to the control caravan before their first game. Date of birth must be included on the player and coach’s information sheet. Coaches must be Bok Smart and include their Bok Smart number on the player and coach’s information sheet 9.

Those sides whom we asked to assist with fielding ‘B’ teams must please note that your teams, A and B are completely separate. Each team will consist of seven players and up to five reserves. These two teams must be clearly divided. The names of players in each side must be handed to the announcer’s caravan prior to play. No player having played in either side may switch teams during the course of the tournament. This will be monitored strictly throughout the day. This is in the spirit of the tournament and must be strictly adhered to by the coaches. Teams found guilty of contravening this regulation will be disqualified by the Tournament Director, whose decision in all matters shall be final.

10. All teams must be complete and ready to take to the field five minutes before the kick-off time. 11. School officials must be responsible for their players’ valuables at all times. 12. Referees will be supplied for all games by the WPRFU. 13. Schools must provide touch-judges in all games. 14. New rule – a player who receives a yellow card from the ref will be expected to ‘sit out’ play for a period of two minutes and the team shall play with only six players. He may return to the field after the two minutes have expired and the ref acknowledges his return. A player who receive a red card from the ref will be asked to leave the field of play and will not be allowed any further ‘game time’ within the tournament. His side shall be penalised for two and half minutes (150 seconds) by playing with six players. After this period a replacement player may take to the field. The team squad will 10 thus be reduced to an effective eleven players.

Junior Section news from the U20 Head Coach of the Villager Football Club

The Villager School Sevens has been a much sought-after event for many schoolboy players in the Province come end of season. It is really a special event to be a part of both for the players and coaches. Many great players of the recent past as well as current top professional players, have taken part in this prestigious tournament - Dillyn Leyds, Nizaam Carr and Nic Groom to name just a few who currently ply their trade for the Stormers and WP. The tournament has definitely grown from its humble beginnings when it involved mostly the Southern Suburbs based traditional schools. Over the past 20 years or so, we have seen a growing representation from numerous top Northern Suburbs schools, Academy teams and some new schools on the block, not to mention the powerhouse schools from up the N1 who really add to an increasing level and intensity of the tournament each year. Sevens rugby, in my opinion, is the purest format of the game. Young players can express their running, evasive and passing skills on attack, while on defence the importance of conditioning, fitness and mental strength are crucial elements of the modern sevens game. The format is continually growing and is often seen as an important stepping stone for aspiring professional rugby players. It is reassuring to see the number of top players who have been identified at school getting opportunities in the professional academies. Many have moved on to play for the BlitzBokke, which is a testament that the structures are well in place and tournaments like these are crucial in identifying, developing and fostering our young talent. Good luck to all the teams. Give your best and enjoy the occasion. Patrick Dierolf Villager U20 Head Coach 2016
