n the few short weeks since the last issue COVID is no longer front page news and the world now has a far bigger threat to contend with. I do of course refer to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. Millions of refugees are making their way to safety across Europe. As we go to press our government is finally introducing a scheme to enable people to offer shelter; by the time you read this the scheme will hopefully be in place. Billingshurst resident Denise Campbell has advised of other organisations which also facilitate this, visit the following websites for info: www.roomforrefugees.com www.refugeesathome.org (primarily intended for city dwellers, our proximity to south coast ports and Gatwick make us ideally situated geographically to be able to help people with their onward journey to family and friends. Religion

Healing for our nations

W

hat does it mean to belong? How does humanity find a way to live side by side on this precious planet we all call home? Over these last weeks many have wept and prayed for those suffering in Ukraine. Deep within us there is a shared longing that wars will cease, and peace will reign. Calls have rung out for a unity in prayer that holds the world’s crushing needs in hope. Sadly, throughout history nations have torn each other apart in war and conflict. Bravely, many ordinary people have chosen to be heroes through their actions of love, selflessness, and service. Heroes we recognise through their actions and attitudes. What does it mean to have a foundation of hope that holds us steady through all seasons? The Bible tells the raw experience of mankind, and its pages are full of the suffering people experience. Yet the steadfast love of God is the constant narrative where again and again he rescues us. At Christmas time we often focus on the description of Jesus: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be

called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9 verse 6 N.I.V. Bible. The final rescue of Jesus on the cross means God himself carries the scars of suffering. The world is rescued in eternal love that is offered to all. Now we have moved to Easter and are told the length that God’s love will take him on the cross. This Easter may you have some time to reflect on the hope humans can always have because God is in the midst of us with unbreakable love and healing for our nations. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans chapter 8 verse 37-39 N.I.V Bible.

WELCOME TO BILLINGSHURST FAMILY CHURCH I wonder what first comes to mind when you think about Easter? For many it might include traditions like rolling chocolate eggs down the stairs or an Easter egg hunt set out by the Easter Bunny or decorating an Easter Bonnet with chicks. Around the world people will be preparing for various traditions. In Bermuda they fly beautiful kites at Easter, in Guatemala they pave the roads with colourful carpets and in Italy there are fantastic fireworks to watch. But what about Jesus? Before the chocolate, kites, carpets and fireworks Jesus gave himself up to suffer and die on a cross for a people who hated him. ‘No greater love has a man than this to lay down his life for his friends.’ Well, what about a man who lay down his life for those who didn’t know Him as a friend? He still reaches out that same hand of friendship to this day. If you’d like to know why we rejoice at Easter and about the Hope that Jesus brought to all when he was resurrected then come along and join us at an Easter service, we’d love to meet you. The Weald Celebrates World Book Day

he Weald School celebrated World Book Day on 4th March with many staff members dressing as characters from books, to avoid the embarrassment of the students having to do so! Students spotted Wally, avoided the intimidating teachers from Hogwarts and had to figure out some of the lesser-known characters for a competition – who can identify the most book characters? In addition, as well as the usual schedule of lessons, teachers were asked to play a prerecorded chapter from a book read by staff members at the beginning of each lesson. The book was Dark Tide by Jon Mayhew, about a sleepy fishing village and its legend of an evil mermaid, narrated by our librarian, Mrs Fella, with help from our Head of Blackman house, Canteen Manager, Careers Manager, Sixth Form Learning Mentor and a couple of talented students – a mixed bunch of contributors which resulted in some very entertaining listening. Earlier in the week, we had our annual Weald Book Award evening, the winning book voted for by Year 6 and Year 7 students in a primary/secondary school

collaboration. The winning book was The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, a touching story of kindness and adventure. The author will receive a trophy from the school. Year 8 pupils were treated to an author visit and book-signing event on 2nd March, when the enthusiastic Chris Bradford visited The Weald for the fourth time. Talking about his new book, Soul Hunters, as well as his previous very successful ‘Samurai’ and ‘Mortal Kombat’ series of books, Chris entertained the young audience with his writing and research methods as well as his visual presence, as he was dressed as a Samurai with Katana (sword) in hand! By the time you read this we will have had our next author visit for Year 9 students at which we hope to inspire more young adult readers at the same time. ant to showcase your club to the local community? Raise awareness? Reach out for new members? At Horsham Indoor Bowls we are blessed with indoor space. We hold Open Days so local people can come in and see what bowls is all about and see our fabulous bowls facilities and clubhouse. This year we plan to extend this to be a showcase of everything (or as much as we can fit in) that is on offer locally. We are inviting local groups and clubs to showcase their club at an Open Weekend in September. Local development and expansion means we have seen an influx of new neighbours that might not be aware of what is out there. Our ambition is that people will be able to come in and see just how active this area is and what an array of opportunities exist for their leisure time. A One Stop Shop! So come on! Reach a wider audience than you might using your traditional promotion methods.

With diverse organisations taking part, and each promoting it to their target market, we should achieve a wide mix of visitors giving the perfect environment for cross fertilisation of interest. Let us know if you would like some space to promote YOUR not-for-profit club or group at this exciting new venture, and let’s get planning! We are situated next to the new Bridge Sports and Leisure Centre at Broadbridge Heath so have a great footfall. We could even do this twice this year holding one before the summer if September misses the boat for some groups. After all, what is good for the area is good for our Club, so do get in touch and let’s ‘get this show on the road!’ Contact us at admin@hdib.club. Potato Rosti

with Poached Egg & Bacon

For an egg-cellent Easter treat try this brilliant sweet ‘n’ salty brunch

METHOD

1. Peel the potatoes, then coarsely grate them along with the parsnips, and squeeze out all the liquid (really important or you’ll get soggy mush rather than crispy rosti!) 2. Season well and separate into six portions, then shape each portion into flat pancake shape, These are the rosti. 3. Heat the butter and oil in a pan and cook the rosti for 6-7 mins on each side until deep golden brown and crispy. Meanwhile, grill or oven cook the bacon for 20-25 minutes, until crisp and golden. Smoked bacon is sublime but unsmoked is good too. 4. A few minutes before the bacon and rosti are ready, bring a pan of water to a gentle simmer and poach the eggs. Top each rosti with 2 rashers of bacon and 1 poached egg. Serve with maple syrup.

Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 25-30 minutes. Serves: 6

St Catherine’s Hospice much-loved Midnight Walk is back!

M

ake 2022 the year you do something incredible! Go the extra mile and join St Catherine’s Hospice for its popular Midnight Walk on Saturday 3rd September 2022 from 8pm. The fun, safe walk, which has either 20-, 13- or 7-mile options starts at The Bridge Leisure Centre, Broadbridge Heath and takes people through the streets of Horsham cheered on by volunteers. As you take a starlight stroll with family, friends, colleagues and others in your community, you’ll know your walk is helping St Catherine’s get a step closer to supporting more local terminally ill people and their families. Perhaps you have someone you love who you can walk in memory of as well? Fran Palliser, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said, “After a break because of the pandemic walking together with others will feel even more special this year. Our Midnight Walk is always a humbling, inspiring night where people remember their loved ones, and challenge themselves to go the extra mile, to

raise as much money as possible for our hospice. Every person has their own reason for walking, but they’re united in wanting to make sure that hospice care is there for other people when it’s needed most. That creates a very special atmosphere. “At the moment St Catherine’s can only reach one in three people who need hospice care. By supporting our Midnight Walk, you’ll be making sure that our hospice can help more people. Nobody should face death and loss alone, so we hope you’ll step out for this very special evening.” Ready to make your steps count? Sign up now at: www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk or call St Catherine's Fundraising Team on (01293) 447361. Make sure you sign up by Saturday 30th April to receive an exclusive early bird entry rate of £15 for adults, £10 for under 18s. Your entry fee includes a free T-shirt, refreshments and medal. Tapestry Day Club Meet Jenny – one of TDC’s regular guests

W

hen the Tapestry Day Club (TDC) first met Jenny ten months ago she seemed very low and depressed. All her regular social activities had closed due to the pandemic and she was feeling increasingly isolated and lonely. Jenny lives with her daughter, whose work required her to be away from home every day. Initially, during the first couple of weeks of joining one of our hosts, Jenny was shy and reluctant to participate with the other guests. Over the ensuing few weeks our host, and the other guests, saw a rapid improvement in Jenny’s mood and how she was beginning to enjoy the day more and more. She loves to chat and has grown so much in confidence. Now she is fully participating in all the activities, helps with preparing lunch and even enjoys the clearing up afterwards. She loves to share with the group her stories of her life as an ex-pat living in Thailand, Africa and Latin America. She is keen on crosswords, puzzles and painting and has become quite the best artist in the group! Tapestry Day Club is a not-for-profit social enterprise supporting the older people in our communities who live with memory issues, frailty and

feelings of loneliness and isolation. We offer small group (up to five guests) get-togethers every week in our fully vetted and trained hosts’ own homes. Our day rate is normally £70 including transport but thanks to some local funding we can now offer it at £40 + £10 transport costs (if needed). Our guests enjoy an engaging day with a two-course home-cooked lunch. Would someone you know benefit from a regular, social, and engaging day out with a delicious hot lunch? Please visit our website for details: www.tapestrydayclub.co.uk/ a-day-with-tdc. Or would you like to support people like Jenny and join our energetic, committed and well remunerated team of hosts? If you have a day a week to spare and would like to support the older people in your community, please contact us via: www.tapestrydayclub.co.uk/work-with-us. Books / About the house

A Good Read April’s selection from book reviewer Tash Donovan How to Kill Your Family – Bella Mackie You know those moments when you’ve wanted to throttle your entire family and bury them under the patio? Or is that just me? Well, they are usually and thankfully short-lived flashes of fury. But what if they weren’t? What if they were deep-rooted and all encompassing? Enter Grace, a woman on a mission. She wants to wipe out parts of her family. I knew the premise before picking up the book and expected Grace to be unlikeable, which is not the case. In fact, I loved her. Mackie has created a sophisticated serial killer thriller. She deftly splits the story between past and present, smoothly interweaving snippets of Grace’s childhood and teens, which are both heart-warming and heart-breaking by turn. Grace endures a lot in her youth, and I honestly held a lot of affection for her throughout the story, in spite of her malign intentions. Grace is as forensically thorough in her planning and execution (pun totally intended) of her murders as Dexter in in the TV series of the same name. In fact, this book is crying out to be turned into a series,

possibly starring Jodie Comer! It is a wonderfully darkly twisted tale which also bizarrely manages to feel somehow uplifting, and there’s a great plot twist too. Black and British: An Illustrated History – David Olusoga David Olusoga is a British-Nigerian historian. His book Black and British, A Short Essential History is an excellent introduction to how Black culture has both enriched and forms an integral part of British culture. While not aimed at children it’s accessible enough for fluent readers, and personally I feel it should be a core text for the National Curriculum. This book, though, is an illustrated and abridged version aimed specifically at children aged 8-11. Like the adult text, it charts the often-overlooked histories of Black people in Britain from Roman times (yes there were Roman Africans!) right through to the present day, encompassing the black soldiers who fought for Britain in World War 1 and Windrush, which has once again been in the news. The full colour illustrations are beautiful and include maps and portraits. This is an informative book for all children (and their parents), no matter what their heritage might be.

Parham House & Gardens Announces Season of Events For 2022

e are delighted to announce that Parham House and Gardens will be opening to visitors on Easter Sunday, 17th April 2022. The preparations for the new season are already well underway, and an exciting series of events and activities have been planned for the spring and summer months. Needlework enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the House will once again be placing selected items from its private collection on display for the month of May during normal House opening hours (2pm to 5pm). The Horsham School of Botanical Artists will be staging a two-week exhibition of drawings and paintings in the Seed Room from the 6th to 17th July. This exhibition will take its theme from the work of the pioneering botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Banks. On 9th and 10th of July, Sussex Steam Shows Ltd will hold the Sussex Steam Rally on the East Plain from 9am to 5pm on both days, and will feature a variety of exhibits from steam traction engines to vintage vehicles. Tickets via www.sussexsteamrally.co.uk. On 31st July, Parham will welcome the members of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. Their beautiful cars will be displayed near the entrance. Parham will run a variety of special tours which will

focus on different aspects of the House and Gardens. These tours are designed for regular visitors who might never have had the opportunity to take a tour before. All places must be booked in advance via our website: www.parhaminsussex.co.uk. 2022 marks a special anniversary. It is now one hundred years since the Hon. Clive and Alicia Pearson purchased the estate and embarked upon their enlightened and sympathetic restoration of the House. The fine paintings, needlework and furniture that Parham’s visitors now see and enjoy are a testament to the Pearsons’ care and exceptional attention to detail. The House and Gardens will be open to visitors on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter Sunday to early October. Tickets for advance booking will be on sale from mid-March. For more information, please visit www.parhaminsussex.co.uk. We send our warmest wishes to all our supporters, visitors and everyone who loves Parham. We look forward to welcoming you back. Polly Bate Photo: Jonathan James Wilson

Cricket Opportunities For All

s the 2022 cricket season approaches Billingshurst CC look to offer opportunities for everyone to play our summer sport. The three competitive Sussex League XIs are joined by a Sunday ‘Friendly’ side, a women’s section and an expanding youth (Colt) set up. Fixtures are played at Jubilee Fields on the outskirts of the village and the club runs social events during the year, including a six-a-side competition, aimed at promoting a club spirit and including all who would like to play or watch cricket. It has been an exciting few months for the Billingshurst Belles Women’s cricket softball team. Over the winter months, they have played a series of matches in the Indoor Softball Cricket League against teams from Chiddingfold, Grayswood, Fernhurst and Petworth. This is a fast-paced game consisting of 12 6-ball overs, lasting no longer than 90 minutes. A great opportunity for the team to practise their skills ready for the outdoor season starting in April. Over the May Bank Holiday, 13 of the team are travelling to the Isle of Wight for the first Billingshurst Belles IoW Cricket Tour. Playing three local teams

across the weekend this should be a fantastic experience for the whole side. The women’s cricket fixture diary is already filling up with both league and tournament events being entered this year. During the season the side will pair up with Steyning CC for hardball cricket practice for those who want to take their cricket to the next stage. The club will once again offer opportunities for youth cricket across the various age groups. This includes coaching and then onto fixtures against local sides. A pathway into adult cricket is provided by the Sunday Friendly XI and the 3rd XI who compete in the Sussex league. Many of the current first team players have progressed through the club’s youth teams. Players (of any level), spectators, newcomers (especially umpires and scorers!) will always be made welcome at Jubilee Fields. programme of Easter boat cruises will be running from Wednesday 13th April, with regular weekend trips restarting on Saturday 23rd April. Boat maintenance teams have got to work ensuring the trip boats are in tip-top condition for visitors after a busy Christmas season. With COVID regulations lifted, the Trust’s largest boat Wiggonholt will once again be able to use its access lift for wheelchair users, allowing those with mobility issues to enjoy the boat trips. Bookings can be made via the Trust’s website. The longest restored section at Loxwood has seen extensive work over the past few months. Volunteers have improved the towpath below Gennets Bridge Lock, where they also removed a causeway and cleared the canal bed. . Storm Eunice created work for volunteers and staff, who pulled out all the stops to clear fallen trees and branches and get towpaths open again. A delivery of saplings courtesy of the Woodland Trust and Chichester District Council was much appreciated and as a result hundreds of native hazel, maple, blackthorn, black cherry, dog rose and dog wood saplings have been planted in Loxwood, further south in the Arun Valley and at Birtley, near Shalford. Little Tweeters! / About the house

Inaugral 2022 Trip to Seal Bay, Selsey Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

O

n March 3rd Nanny, Grandad, Magnus and Poppy went to the caravan at the right time for the first time in two years. They were all very excited. They didn’t take the awning yet, that was for next time, because they needed someone to help them put it up now, they were getting to be the oldest people on the site. But before they went there were lots of things to do. Nanny wanted to try and finish the new pond. Last year she had decided to revamp the two small ponds into one bigger pond (but still small compared to the 20202021 pond you are familiar with from previous installments). She did this because a leak had somehow developed as the water left one pond to flow into second pond to flow back into original pond – a great idea but too frequently the first pond somehow emptied out and the poor old pump was heaving away on empty! She emptied the shallow pond and pulled out the old sandpit shell which provided the foundation and tried to dig it out and admitted defeat. (Old age strikes again!) A post on Facebook resulted in Stuart, her friend from church, digging it out beautifully. Just what she wanted. She’d ordered the lining, then put it down. Predictably there was a glitch. Her idea of patching and matching did not work and the full pond emptied itself overnight. Not to be daunted she ordered another lining – a bigger one. When it arrived, and before she could put it down, she had to rehome four or five frogs who had taken up residence under the previous lining. Finally it was laid down and she spent three days sorting out paving stones and trimming the lining to fit . Once it was done she turned her attention to the

electrics for the pump. Said pump had been rescued from the yellow iris roots which had grown around it. Fortunately after being cleaned it still worked. Sadly after the storm power cuts, the electric cable from the house to the electric box for the pump tripped a switch and rendered the security light useless together with Gary’s study and the laundry room. Gary fiddled around with the master fusebox, leaving the pump with no power (it insisted on tripping if switched back on) but everything else back online. Nanny was sure the socket on the pump end was faulty especially as one half of it was missing. A new socket had to be purchased but will have to wait to be installed after they come home from the caravan. After the winter the irrigation bits, hoses and hose splitters and irrigation pumps had to be sorted, washed and refurbished and new bits purchased. Again, on hold. One other thing that had to be done before they left was to organise the feeding and watering of the birds, squirrels, sheep and chickens. Fortunately Sara was on hand and willing to do that. Nanny also had to write the Village Tweet story which, as you are reading this, means at least something was achieved! Finally they had to remember all the things they had to remember to pack the car and still leave room for the dogs. That took all week. The 3rd of March dawned. With car packed, dogs harnessed, Nanny’s fingers crossed that they had remembered everything important, they set off leaving that little farm near Billingshurst for a few days at the beach. Tackling Speeding Vehicles in the Parish

At the suggestion of local residents concerned about speeding traffic, the Parish Council has purchased a limited number of A4 vinyl stickers to go on wheelie bins. The idea is that motorists see lots of such stickers on bin days and hopefully moderate their speed. (Leaving bins out all the time doesn’t have the same impact, research has shown.) So, if you would like a sticker, you can collect one (per household) from the reception of the Billingshurst Centre. Please bring along anything with your address on so we can ensure they are distributed only to parishioners.

Platinum Jubilee A small group has been meeting regularly to plan a program of events for the big weekend in June, when we celebrate Her Majesty’s momentous milestone. These centre pages in the May edition will feature all the details so keep a look out.

Plant a Tree for Jubilee In support of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the Parish Council is hoping to plant more trees in the parish. In autumn 2020, 27 trees were planted around the parish, funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) held by the Council, and proved very popular leading to requests from residents for even more trees. The Council is now asking residents to suggest further locations for trees and also inviting donations which the Council will match

on a £ for £ basis from its CIL fund. It costs £200 to supply and plant each sturdy standardsized specimen. Suggestions for sites must be for land deemed highway, which in the main are grass verges. (If in doubt, send in your suggestions anyway.) Please send a simple sketch map to the Parish Office, by post or e-mail. Each site will be assessed for suitability in terms of sightlines, underground utilities etc. Donations can be by way of cheques payable to Billingshurst Parish Council or via BACS: Billingshurst Parish Council / Sort code 60-02-31 / AC No. 95980784. Please put TREE DONATION as the reference. Trees will be planted in the autumn of 2022.

Money! Money! Money! The Parish Council has a modest Grants Budget to help local charities, and not-for-profit groups. So, if your good cause operates in

BilliGreen Swift Conservation. Can you help save Billingshurst’s Swifts? When our local Swift colony arrives back in Billingshurst in spring after a marathon journey from their wintering grounds in Africa they need two things: a safe place to nest and plenty of invertebrates to eat. But these essentials are becoming increasingly scarce. BILLIGREEN can provide reasonably priced Swift nest boxes. April is the perfect time to install a box which should be placed at least 4.5 metres high and free from obstructions such as telegraph cables and nearby trees. A south facing wall should be avoided. ‘LET IT GROW’. If you are a gardener please leave a patch of grass and wild flowers to flourish; this will encourage insects, food for hungry Swifts. For more info contact Helen Toole via BilliGreen’s Facebook page or email helen.toole@btinternet.com.

Hedgehog Awareness Week Hedgehog Awareness Week is coming up in May and is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). It aims to highlight the problems hedgehogs face and how you can help them. Gardens are a stronghold for hedgehogs and their lives can be made much easier with very little effort. Every year many hedgehogs are seriously injured or killed by cutting machines in the garden. Please check grass and hedges thoroughly before using mowers, strimmers or hedge cutters. If you would like to support the work of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society you can contact them on (01584) 890801 or visit their website www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk.

Billingshurst Community Speedwatch Billingshurst Community Speedwatch sessions will be starting up again soon. Could you spare some time to get involved? If you are concerned about speeding vehicles in the parish, and you would like to be able to try and

do something about it, please consider joining the Billingshurst Community Speedwatch Scheme. The more volunteers that come forward, the more frequently the Speedwatch sessions can be held and the more areas can be covered. You don’t have to commit to taking part in every session; even just every now and then will help. If you are interested in joining the scheme, please contact Michael, the Community Speedwatch co-ordinator on 07768 081745.

Traffic Calming Proposals Thanks to all those who responded to our recent consultation on draft proposals to try to reduce and slow traffic in the High Street and East Street. Out of a mammoth 441 responses, 76.4% supported the proposals and 23.6% were against. There were some excellent suggestions and points made, which will all be collated and sent to WSCC as highway authority in support of our request that they take forward all or part of the scheme. Please be rest assured that this is very much a first step and there will be further opportunities for you to have your say.

Dog Fouling – The facts The Parish Council frequently receives complaints about persistent dog fouling in the parish. Here is a reminder of the facts about dog fouling: • It is the responsibility of the dog owner or walker to clean up after the dog if it fouls in a public area. Failure to do so may incur a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80. • The law applies almost everywhere once you are outside your own garden. It covers parks, footpaths, open spaces, verges, alleyways, playing fields and any other public place. If you witness someone committing a dog fouling offence, please report it to Horsham District Council via their website www.horsham.gov.uk or contact them on (01403) 215100 for more information.

You don’t need wilderness to attract wildlife A new planting scheme on the Village Green

B

illingshurst Village Green, on the High Street, has a new look. It has been replanted as a ‘woodland garden’ with a range of plants chosen to attract wildlife, clustered around a root from an old oak tree. Volunteers from BilliGreen worked alongside local woodsman Clive Cobie and Billingshurst Parish Council to devise the new scheme with funding from Horsham District Council (supported by the European Regional Development Fund and HM Government, through the Welcome Back Fund). Among the plants are hawthorn. Its fragrant white flowers in the spring and red berries in the autumn should provide a more interesting display for local residents and visitors than the previous overgrown shrubs. For wildlife, nectar and pollen in the blossom provide food for insects such as bees. Birds, like song thrushes, eat the berries and like to build their nests in the safe space provided by the tree. Stop by and see if you can spot dog violet which flowers from now until June. They are an important

24

food source for rare butterflies in the fritillary family. Other flowers include wild daffodils and bluebells whose deep flower heads should attract long-tongued varieties of bumblebees. Primroses, cow parsley and dandelion have flower shapes which are ideal for smaller bees and wasps, hoverflies, and all sorts of tiny beetles. The planting scheme also includes ferns, one of the oldest types of plant, which developed millions of years ago. They grow in poor soil; even on logs and rocks. The garden should provide a home for ‘shredders’ – beetles, earwigs and woodlice – who break down dead plants, playing their part in the cycle of life. Keep an eye out to see how the garden develops over the year. Mela Davidson Photo: Billingshurst Village Green undergoes a transformation!

Charity

Building begins on the new St Catherine’s Hospice

B

uilding work has begun on a larger St Catherine’s Hospice at Pease Pottage which will provide more care for people in our community. Barnes Construction have started work on the local charity’s new hospice which will provide more space to develop essential hospice services and allow hospice teams to respond to the increasing need for hospice care.

The time for a new hospice is now St Catherine’s was first founded in 1983 by a group of pioneers in the local community who recognised end of life care needed to be better for local people. Since then, St Catherine’s has provided care and support to thousands of local families, but with no room to grow at their current hospice in Malthouse Road, the hospice needs to expand to provide more care to more people now and in the future.

Hospice care has never been more needed Research has shown demand for hospice services will rapidly increase with an ageing population. Current trends suggest that there could be twice as many deaths in hospices, care homes, and private homes in 20 years’ time. Coronavirus has also caused devastating disruption to people’s health. During the pandemic there were 50,000 late-stage diagnoses for cancer (source: Macmillan Cancer Support, 2021) and significant worsening of symptoms amongst people living with dementia (source: Alzheimer’s Society, 2020).

28

Bereavement is also now a national crisis Early data from Cardiff University’s Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Centre and the University of Bristol found many bereaved people are experiencing severe vulnerability in their grief. They’re facing long waiting lists or being told they’re ineligible for help. St Catherine’s can provide specialist bereavement support to help local people to navigate their loss. Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s said, “Despite the excellent work of the NHS, too many people have experienced tragic deaths during the pandemic. People have died alone without family or friends by their side or experienced uncertainty or delay to their treatments. Others have felt terrible guilt because they were unable to fulfil a loved one’s last wishes or say goodbye in a meaningful way. “So many people didn’t have the death they deserved or wanted. So many others had to cope with bereavement isolated and alone. With your help, we need to make sure that people in our local community don’t ever have to cope alone again. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that work on our new hospice has begun. We’re currently setting the foundations ready for our new building’s steel framework to be assembled this summer. Following this we hope to have our first rooms complete by around August 2023 and will be welcoming people to our new hospice in autumn next year.” The new hospice will provide more care to more of our community It will allow St Catherine’s to expand its expert community services so more families can have support in the comfort of their own home. It will also allow the charity to increase wellbeing, emotional care and bereavement support by offering private counselling rooms, a reflective courtyard and spiritual space. But it has all only been made possible thanks to the generosity of local people. This includes Bill Bridges, a landowner who donated land at Pease Pottage in memory of his mother who received hospice care and John Shelmeld who left a significant gift to the local charity in his will in 2014. A new hospice will transform patient and families’ experience of hospice care There will be 24 beds – an increase from 18 beds in the current hospice – and all rooms will offer people a peaceful private garden and ensuite bathroom. twelve rooms have adjoining sitting rooms for families wishing to stay overnight. Four rooms have been especially designed to meet the

needs of people with dementia and all rooms have bedroom hoists for safe and dignified movement. Additionally, four rooms have bathroom hoists for people who need this extra support. St Catherine’s currently lacks space to have difficult and private conversations with family members so their new building has dedicated space to allow greater dignity and comfort. There are also family spaces for relatives on each ward to prepare food, relax and take a moment. The difference a new hospice will make • An additional 250 people will receive care as outpatients and 110 extra patients will be cared for on the hospice wards each year • New step-down care will be offered for people coming out of hospital who are not quite ready to return home • Respite care will be reintroduced on the hospice wards, giving carers a much needed break from caring for someone they love at home • Enhanced wellbeing groups such as breathe easy clinics, emotional support groups, and physiotherapist-led exercise classes will help

people to live as well as they can for as long as they can • To help people cope with loss and bereavement, there will be private rooms to speak with family members and dedicated spaces for remembrance and contemplation. St Catherine’s is so near to completing their new hospice, but the local charity has a final £800,000 to raise Now they are calling on the community to help more people have the end of life care they deserve. “Together we have a unique chance to provide better end of life care and to help more families through bereavement. With your help we need one final push to finish our new hospice. I hope you will join us,” said Giles. To donate towards your new local hospice please visit: www.stch.org.uk/newhospice or call the St Catherine’s Fundraising Team on (01293) 447361. Collectively, your generosity and the generosity of others will complete St Catherine’s new hospice home. Thank you! Laura Bland, St Catherine’s Hospice

The Spaniel Diaries

W

ell, I am happy to say it’s finally spring! The lighter evenings are finally here although it does mean more training! There are so many nice new smells to sniff and lots of flowers in the garden for me to squash – I love doing that, it drives mum mad when she sees me sitting on a fresh clump of daffodils! She has been busy in the garden these last few weeks and I thought she would appreciate me helping to dig up the flower beds – she didn’t and she’s also found several of my toys stashed in the flowerpots so I shall need to rethink where to hide them out of the reach of Mav’s grubby little paws. Easter is also fast approaching and I think I shall get mum a chocolate egg, even though she won’t share it with us as chocolate is bad for us dogs – it should remind her to buy us some of our favourite meaty treats! Our evening walks are getting longer and we are exploring new areas. Mum is careful to ensure new places are safe before we are allowed to run off the lead; my favourite is the woods where the Bluebells are! Mum does have a horrible habit of insisting that we sit in front of the flowers so she can take a photo of us. Although I’m very handsome I’m also shy so I don’t make it easy for her as I like to yawn or close my eyes! Mav has a massive ego though and will sit right in front of me even though he’s not as handsome as me. Mum seems delighted and clicks away, she then shares them with something she calls Faceache – she must be very proud of us as she’s always showing us off and apparently we get loads of ‘likes’ so I must be doing something right! There’s been lots of work to do on the farm,

clearing up the mess the grass munching machines have made over the winter – honestly, you’d think a herd of rhinos has been kept in those fields over the winter, there’s potholes the local county council would be proud of, so Mum has been pottering about – yes, she potters as I think she’s quite old now – and has been using a funny little chuggy machine to tidy up the paddock and make it flat again. I have been useful too – I’ve been locating and digging up mole hills, it really is the most amazing fun. Although I have yet to find a mole I have been doing a service by flattening the muddy little mountains for mum and covering Mav in dirt as he insists on standing behind me trying to see what is going on, now that is very satisfying! Luckily Mum is saving the brunt of the training for Mav as she intends to enter him in a working test soon, she has pretty much given up on the idea of making me do it, she knows that I would show her up! Making a soulful whining sound of which I am ridiculously good at would be enough to put her out of the running and if she thinks I’m putting a disgusting canvas dummy in my mouth she can think again! Mav, however, is such a sneak that he actually enjoys finding the things and bringing them back to mum – I must try to bury some in the garden and see how he gets on with that! Mum has been getting things ready in the black case thing so it must mean we are going away somewhere soon, she mentioned something called ‘Zummerzet’ and was talking about pubs and cider so I’m hoping this means another week of walkathons! I really can’t wait as the Dartmoor adventure was such fun. Have a Happy Easter! Jeannette Douglas

Be nice to bees!

A

lbert Einstein supposedly declared that, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left”. There is much debate over whether the great man actually did make such an assertion as he was a physicist after all, not an entomologist, but whether he did or not, it’s a scary thought. There’s no doubt about it, honey bees and bumble bees are of enormous agricultural importance. It is estimated that more than a third of the world’s crop production relies on these bees. Without them we’re in trouble and they are in decline. Pesticides, loss of habitat and disease are all thought to be playing a part. Bees are fascinating and beautiful creatures and as gardeners we can play our part in their continued survival. It’s simple: bees need flowers for sustenance, flowers need bees for survival and gardeners need flowers to garden! First it’s important to think ahead and provide flowers for bees throughout their lifecycle, which runs from March to September. Here are some suggestions. Spring – bluebells, bugle, flowering cherry, forget-me-not (Myosotis), hellebore and rosemary are all good spring plants. Summer – Aquilegia, sweet peas, fennel, foxgloves, potentilla, roses, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum

Late summer / early autumn – Aster, buddleia, dahlia, eryngium, fuchsia, heather, lavender and sedum. Second, unfortunately not all flowers are created equal. Frilly double flowers, for example, are too elaborate. They have so many petals that the bees struggle to get to the nectar and pollen. This is the reason that single dahlias attract lots of bees, whilst double varieties are generally ignored. Single-flowered rose varieties are also good, such as the rambler Seagull, with its flat open white blooms, large yellow stamens and heady scent. Any similar rambler grown over a fence or wall will do. Some, like the pale pink Little Rambler, will even repeat flower. Ramblers are terrific roses. They are vigorous, disease resistant and great for covering bare fences, unsightly sheds and walls. Best of all they need next to no pruning! The main thing is to keep it simple – a few flowers for each part of the bee’s life cycle and no overly fancy varieties. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t grow double-flowered dahlias if that’s what floats your boat, it’s just that Mr Bee would appreciate a few single flowered varieties thrown into the mix. Let’s make this the year we all be nice to bees; our future may depend on it! Rachel Leverton

Community Gardening Day Station Road Community Gardens, Billingshurst, Saturday 23rd April from 9.30am “Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful!’ and sitting in the shade”

T

he Friends of Station Road Gardens have been busy over the winter keeping the weeds at bay and tidying up the beds and keeping Station Road Community Gardens neat and tidy. However, as we get into spring and everything bursts into life again, it’s a good time to carry out some of the larger tidying up tasks and cutting back of various larger shrubs and bushes. In order to carry out some of this work, we are planning to have a Community Gardening Day, well, morning, on Saturday 23rd April from 9.30am onwards and would really appreciate a few hours of assistance from anyone who is able to help out. We had over 30 volunteers last year, and we know several new friendships were formed. It would be fantastic to get similar

34

numbers or even more this time around. So, if you have a love of gardening and beautiful spaces, come, join us in our quest to maintain this beautiful space which we all share. Looking a bit further into the future, as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, we are planning to hold a musical event on Saturday 4th June starting at 2pm, with a plant stall, various types of refreshments and a number of other displays and stalls from local clubs and societies. If you would like to volunteer to help with the event on the day, then please e-mail me at sps197@hotmail.com. Stuart Sexton, Chairman, Friends of Station Road Gardens

April at last! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by. Hip hip hooray! April at last and the signs of spring are eagerly awaited. Now, did you resist the chance of playing an April Fool’s joke on someone, or maybe were you the recipient of one? April Fools day… where did it come from? Some think that it goes back to 1563 when the Julian Calendar was changed to the Gregorian one by the French at the Council of Trent. Many, due to the obvious slow movement of news in those times, continued to celebrate the New Year at the beginning of April as the old Julian Calendar stipulated it to be. They quickly became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called ‘April Fools’. So it’s a very old tradition that we still follow to this day! However, there is another idea that it goes back even further to ancient Rome when at the end of March followers of the cult of Cybele enjoyed dressing up in disguise and mocking fellow citizens and even the local magistrates. Here in the UK it appears during the 18th century, where in Scotland it became a two-day event, starting with ‘Hunting the Gowk’ (Gowk is an old word for the cuckoo, a symbol for a fool) where people were sent on phony errands. This was followed by Tailie Day which involved trying to pin fake tails on folk’s derrières or ‘Kick me’ signs on them. Which means that we can take comfort that for centuries we have at this time of the year all been victims or perpetrators of childish pranks. There again… who wants to grow up! Anyway… changing the subject and reverting back to farming. It was way back over 50 years ago that I first came across what was then a new practice: the introduction of cross-breeding of some farm animals. Gene manipulation was not known about then, it was long before the episode of Dolly the Sheep! However, in some areas farmers were ahead of the scientists in the

way they tried to improve their stock for production and versatility. Even on the two mixed farms that I started my farming life on the owners were forever trying ways to increase the income of the farm by looking at improving the animals that roamed the yard and fields. My first encounter was when one farmer succeeded in getting one of his Muscovy ducks to mate with his prime cockerel. The resulting chicks from the incubator were a delight. They had webbed feet but beaks instead of bills and clucked softly too. A novelty perhaps, but proof that such crosses were possible with careful husbandry and a fair dose of just good luck! It’s only recently though that real movement has been made in advancing this line of work. At a farm in Suffolk work has been going on in crossbreeding the pigs and beef cattle on the estate. They have had some considerable success in the programme and have a small herd of some 60-odd animals from this breeding programme. The Food Standard Agency and the Meat Marketing Board are at present working together to try to set the standards for the marketing of the resulting meat products. The animals for the present time are known as Beps – presumably an attempt to unite the mixing of beef and pig genomes. So far the information on trial results is very favourable. The average litter is around four animals and growth is on a par with normal rates. This should give the farmer a far greater return per animal as well as increasing the choices available on the marketing of the finished carcass. This, say the Agency, is due to the fact that the meat can be used for good quality bacon production or butchered for the dual use of roasting joints that retain first class beef qualities. Pork and beef from the same animal! National trials are set to commence at the beginning of April with Beps being placed around the country on various farms to see how they respond to normal farm practice. Interesting don’t you think? John Nash

Egremont Russet An occasional mini-series on apple varieties… First recorded in 1872 this is the apple that most regard as the very best of the russets. Believed to have been bred by the Earl of Egremont in Petworth, this is the wonderful Egremont Russet. Any of you who are as ancient as I am will remember the Radio Gardener of our youth… the wonderful Fred Streeter, who always claimed that it did indeed come from Petworth. Mind you, as Lord Egremont’s Head Gardener at Petworth House you could say he might had been a tad biased. I can still hear his favourite saying when asked a gardening question on the wireless. He would pause for a minute, then in his broad Sussex accent, “Ah… you know… the answer

38

lies in the soil.” For many years this was the second most grown apple in the UK, only surpassed by the Cox’s Orange Pippin. Now I’m afraid the Gala apple is by far the largest variety grown, but perhaps that’s one to look at later. Much later. Egremonts, like all Russets, are inclined to be the Marmite of apples. You either like them or hate them. Yes, the skin can be like tough sandpaper but that wonderful nutty taste which is so unique to the Russet, is to die for! A warm autumn evening, a large old apple tree to sit under; a pint of beer or glass of wine; a chunk of cheddar and a Russet. That’s true Bliss! John Nash
