n the last month the war in Ukraine has escalated hugely following the barbaric invasion by Russia with millions of Ukrainians forced to flee their homes. Many countries including Britain are doing all they can, from supplying weapons to offering much needed food, clothing and shelter. Billingshurst for Ukraine is coordinating help in the form of accommodation and support for refugees. More volunteers urgently needed. See page 7. The Weald School have sent two coaches to Ukraine packed with much needed aid. See page 9. Billingshurst & District Lions Club have donated £4000 to Ukraine Humanitarian Relief. See page 19. Ukrainian flags are flying at Billingshurst’s Community Centre and Horsham town centre. See pages 15 and 24. Many homes and cars are also flying Ukrainian flags. It all helps. The above are just a few examples of much needed local support and solidarity shown towards Ukraine. Grahame

Basket of brokenness

H

ave you ever held in your hands the precious, broken pieces of something you treasure and wonder how ever you can restore what has been broken? As you stare the pieces still hold beauty but you long for what used to be. After painstakingly restoring this treasure you may well be able to return it to its place of pride in your life. The cracks themselves telling the story of love and commitment. The Bible paints a picture of a God who stands in the midst of brokenness and suffering. A God who is ever present and allowed himself to be broken on the cross. A God who offers healing and a love that can never be broken. At the beginning of his ministry Jesus read this longpromised prophecy he himself fulfils. The promise of God to restore humans in their brokenness and never abandon them.

6

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, …to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. Bible-Isaiah 61 New International version At this time of World suffering our hearts and minds are overwhelmed by brokenness. The Bible holds out for us the miracle of hope through God’s eternal love. His offer of life within his love and the gift of life beyond death.

Billingshurst Support for Ukraine

T

he Billingshurst Community Partnership, Family Church and Community Transport are working together to build a network of support for Ukrainian refugees and their host families. We have launched a website (address below) which gives details of how local people can get involved. The aim is to encourage residents to register their offer of support in one central place so we can build a network and have a co-ordinated overview of the support available locally. To date, over 50 people have registered their offers of support and we have over 20 households in our area offering accommodation. This is a fantastic response so far! Thank you to everyone who has signed up already! As well as working with the Horsham Refugee Support Group, there are a number of local people with links to Ukraine who are putting us directly in touch with families and friends seeking refuge from the war. For security reasons, we will not respond to anyone asking for help who contacts us directly through Facebook or any other social media platform. We will only engage

with people of known contacts. We recognise that not everyone can offer accommodation but there are many other ways in which people can get involved: shopping, transport, befriending and mentoring, form filling and language help, etc. If you would like to become part of the Billingshurst for Ukraine team of volunteers please visit the website and get in touch. We are happy to talk with you about any ideas or concerns you may have, and would welcome wider engagement from other community organisations and clubs who feel that they may have something that could improve our response to what is a truly terrible and catastrophic situation happening in Ukraine. We look forward to hearing from you. Billingshurst Ukrainian Support Team

Carrot, Feta & Sweet Potato Fritters A tasty snack or vegetarian meal

METHOD

1. Peel and grate the carrots, potatoes, onion, and sweet potatoes. Place them into a colander or a large sieve over the sink with a big pinch of salt, and leave to drain for 30 minutes. 2. Squeeze as much liquid from the grated veg as you can, pressing down hard into the colander or sieve for 1-2 minutes, then add the grated veg to the egg mixture. Stir to combine well and season generously. Heat the oven to 150°C/fan130°C/gas 2. 4. Heat the oil in a wok or deep saucepan to 180°C, or until a cube of bread sizzles. The Weald School supports Sussex Coaches’ Ukraine appeal

T

he Weald School Community came together in March in support of Sussex Coaches’ fantastic Ukraine Appeal. The idea was the brainchild of local mums, Karina and Jenna, who were so moved by the stories they saw on the News, that they decided to start a collection of things to donate to the displaced people of Ukraine. As the idea grew, ‘From Sussex with Love’ was born, and with it their decision to take the items to Ukraine themselves, with the help of their ‘lovely fellas’, two coaches and lots of generous locals. Donations were requested to cover the estimated fuel bill of £6,500 for the initial two coaches and their return journeys, as well as requests for medical supplies, sanitary items, baby formula, food, nappies and other essentials. Coordinator Charlotte Hill made contact with Mr Fry, Head of Character and Culture at The Weald to tell the story and he made the decision to push this out

to the school’s marketing team to spread the word. The donations literally began to flood in, completely filling the school’s front foyer and corridor. The response was overwhelming. A single transit van arrived at The Weald a couple of days later to collect the items, with the admin team, network office and premises staff pitching in to fill the vehicle. It soon became evident that one van just wasn’t enough, so one of the school’s minibusses was filled, with a third vehicle sent to collect the remaining items. A few days later, the first coach set off for Ukraine. From Sussex with Love can be followed on Facebook and is still collecting and delivering much-needed supplies to the people of Ukraine. How to Cope in an Uncertain World

O

ver the past couple of years, we've had to cope with a pandemic, political uprisings and now war in the Ukraine. Life is constantly changing so you would think we’d be better at dealing with uncertainty. But humans crave stability, and we crave it most when life is unpredictable. This is where coping strategies come in to play. There are unhealthy coping strategies, like alcohol or junk food and there are also healthy coping strategies. What is coping? Coping is an active process where you pause, appraise the situation, target the problem, and then choose a set of interventions. Stay grounded. Create a safe space for you and your family. Structure your home so that you and your family feel grounded. Reduce the sadness and stress of uncertainty by keeping News to a minimum. Don’t talk endlessly about sensational stories. Connect with each other and think of your home as a sanctuary from the uncertainty of life. Use routines. Keep scheduled mealtimes and bedtimes, and daily chores, including the children’s homework. Also make sure there are regular

periods of relaxation and fun, like a family games night or a walk. Routines provide a steady rhythm and research shows that when your day has an organised framework, you develop a greater tolerance for unpredictability. Choose information sources carefully. During uncertain times be guardedly curious and try not to accept sensational stories as factual. Embrace uncertainty. Ultimately we have to live with uncertainty. Cultivating hope and possibility during uncertain times is important. Instead of focusing on sadness or anxiety, shift the focus to wonder or curiosity. Confronting what we don’t know can trigger creative thinking and problem solving and help you and your family feel empowered in the face of the unpredictable. Practise gratitude. Make time to notice and reflect on the good and meaningful things and people in your life and encourage your children or grandchildren to do the same. Studies show that gratitude generates feel-good neurochemicals serotonin and dopamine in your brain which help to reduce worry. Kate McCarthy

Ukraine flag raising in Horsham Town Centre

orsham District Council Chairman Councillor David Skipp and Leader Councillor Jonathan Chowen raised the Ukranian national flag in Horsham Town Centre on 17th March in solidarity with our Ukrainian friends. The people of Horsham District stand with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked attack on freedom and democracy. #StandingwithUkraine. Councillor Skipp said, “The unimaginable suffering of the Ukrainian people is at the forefront of all of our minds. I hope that by raising the flag we convey our support to the people of Ukraine and show that we stand with them, demonstrating our respect for their country and our sympathy for its plight as they bravely fight for their freedom, their future and their sovereignty.” Councillor Chowen added, “I am proud that Horsham District is a diverse and welcoming

community and our thoughts are with all the people who are affected by the Ukrainian conflict in this frightening and uncertain time. We will play our part in helping in any way we can as more information becomes available on the support being offered by the government.” Horsham District Council is committed to working closely with refugee and community groups, together with West Sussex County Council which leads on refugee resettlement in our area, to do all we can to help. St Catherine’s celebrates £100,000 grant awarded to Sussex Hospices

N

HS Charities Together, via the Heads On Charity, award funds to help provide end of life care for people in their own homes. St Catherine’s Hospice, the hospice care charity for West Sussex and East Surrey, is part of a collaboration of Sussex Hospices to successfully apply for a major grant from NHS Charities Together. The £100,000 award was given to the seven adult hospices in Sussex to provide hospice care to patients discharged from hospital. The grant is shared equally between the hospices and will be used to help fund a Clinical Nurse Specialist in each hospice to provide patient care and support when people leave hospital. All hospices in Sussex have seen an increase in demand for community services during the pandemic. The grant from NHS Charities Together has been made available via the Heads On Charity in Sussex as part of a programme to support NHS and healthcare charities dealing with the impact of COVID-19. Heads On is making the grant on behalf of all Sussex NHS charities as part of the NHSCT Community Partnership grants programme which aims to reduce the stress on the NHS and to support the provision of wrap-around care for individuals and communities where it is vitally needed. This is the first time that the group of Sussex Hospices have worked together to apply for a joint grant. They identified that by working together they could have greater impact across the whole of Sussex. The hospices are: St Catherine’s Hospice, Martlets, St Barnabas House, St Michael’s Hospice, St Peter & St James Hospice, St Wilfrid’s Hospice Eastbourne and St Wilfrid’s Hospice Chichester. The members of the Sussex Hospice collaboration provide care for the majority of their patients with lifelimiting conditions in their own homes. In 2019/2020

before the impact of COVID-19 Sussex hospices made 52,486 home visits to 7,679 patients across Sussex. During the first 6 months of the pandemic there was an average 22% increase in demand for community services. Hospice care supports families to look after loved ones with terminal illness at home providing expert medical care that includes symptom control and pain relief. The grant will specifically support ‘effective discharge’ from hospitals including preventing unnecessary and distressing re-admissions. Jacquie Thomas, Trusts and Major Giving Officer at St Catherine’s commented, “I am absolutely delighted to find out that we have received this important funding and I’m very grateful to NHS Charities Together and to the Heads On Charity for their support. This is the first time hospices across Sussex have worked together to successfully apply for a grant that will have the greatest impact for local people across the county. An award of this size also recognises the work of hospices across Sussex and what we do to support people with end-of-life conditions, helping them to stay out of hospital and be at home where they want to be.” Rachael Duke, Head of the Heads On Charity, said, “We are extremely grateful to NHS Charities Together for their support and funding. We are truly excited to be working with such fantastic organisations, to deliver projects across Sussex that will address health inequalities, suicide prevention and supported hospital discharge. We look forward to seeing the impact of these projects as they begin delivery over the coming months.” Laura Bland, St Catherine’s Hospice Photo: During the first six months of the pandemic there was an average 22% increase in demand for hospice community services, providing care at home

Theatre / About the house

Is there anybody there?

ehearsals for the Billingshurst Dramatic Society’s May production are in full swing! Building on the success of February's Murdered to Death, Jane Brough and Peter Burton have chosen to direct another comedy, Give Us A Sign by Tony Domaille. Out-of-work Ken Lockwood (played by Roddy McKerrell) decides to start a new business as a clairvoyant. Since Klairvoyant Ken – yes, he does spell it with a ‘K’ – doesn’t seem to have any particular gift for communing with the dead, his long-suffering wife, Rachel (Ted Gooda), is distressed by the notion that he is earning money by ‘making things up’. Meanwhile, news of the death of a famous scientist, Professor Alice Roberts (Denise Robinson), fills the media, but what secrets has she taken to her grave? Suddenly, everyone wants to talk to the dead woman. It’s all quite a challenge for the not-terribly-convincing psychic powers of poor Klairvoyant Ken, especially when he finds himself at the centre of a diplomatic ‘incident’! Usually front of stage, Peter Burton makes his directorial debut with Give Us A Sign. It’s not the daunting prospect that it might be, though, since he is collaborating with experienced writer and director Jane Brough, and is confident that she will ‘keep him on the straight and narrow.’

We’re delighted that BDS favourite Lisa Falkner is making a return to the stage, and that Di Pospisil and Stephen Wright are joining us for their first full-length production, having both taken part in BDS murdermystery evenings. We are also thrilled that we have some new members helping out backstage and on the technical team. Don’t forget to get in touch via the website if you would like to get involved. Many hands make light work, as the saying goes, or ‘Is there anybody there?’ as Klairvoyant Ken might say. The show will run for four performances at the Women’s Hall with curtain up at 7.45pm on the 26th, 27th and 28th May, plus an additional 2pm matinee and afternoon tea in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Saturday 28th May. Tickets, at £12 for the evening shows and £18 for the matinee with high tea, are available from our box office at Mansell McTaggart on Billingshurst High Street, or online from WeGotTickets via a link on our website at www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com. A Bunch of Amateurs

he Barns Green Players are now busy rehearsing for another of its popular Comedy Evenings. This year the Players will be performing a very funny play, A Bunch of Amateurs, which will be performed over two weekends in May. The performances will be on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th and Friday 20th and Saturday 21st May in the Barns Green Village Hall. Keen to boost his flagging career, fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steel arrives in England to play King Lear in Stratford – only to find that this is not the birthplace of The Bard, but a sleepy Suffolk village and instead of Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, the cast are a bunch of amateurs trying to save their theatre from developers. Jefferson’s monstrous ego, vanity and insecurity are tested to the limit by the enthusiastic am-dram thespians. As acting worlds collide and Jefferson’s career implodes, he discovers some truths about himself – along with his inner Lear! In 2008, A Bunch of Amateurs was made into a film starring Burt Reynolds, Derek Jacobi, Imelda Staunton and Samatha Bond. A Bunch of Amateurs was first performed at the

Watermill Theatre on 22nd May 2014. This amateur production of the play is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. This is one of Barns Green Players’ very popular comedy ‘bring your own food’ shows so why not get a few friends together and make a great night out of it. The doors open at 7pm which gives you time to settle in and eat your meal. Drinks from our licensed bar will be brought to your table by members of the players who will look after you throughout the evening. The round tables complete with white table cloths can seat eight people, so if you can make up a full table of eight that would be great. If not, you can just form part of another table Tickets are available from: Website: www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk Box office: (01403) 730017 Tickets are just £12.50 each or £100 for a full table of Eight. Doors open 7pm with the performances starting at 8pm. NIgel Currie Photo: Sen here during rehearsal, the cast are, from left to right: Alex Nicholson, Jan Critchley, Hazel Bailey, Brian Parrish. Books / About the house

A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Tash Donovan The Last Thing He Told Me – Laura Dave Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to Hannah, his wife of one year: Protect her. Hannah, while understandably scared and confused, knows exactly who the note refers to. It’s Owen’s 16-year-old daughter Bailey, who lost her mother when she was very young and wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As the FBI arrest Owen’s boss and US Marshals arrive her home, Hannah realises her husband may not be who he said he was. If you love a mystery but crave a reprieve from the usual bloody murder and maverick detective scenario, Laura Dave’s novel about a man living a lie and his wife and daughter desperately trying to find out who he really is, might be the perfect solution. The mystery of Owen’s past is certainly intriguing, but the strength of this book really lies in the characters. This is not a book about Hannah’s relationship with Owen, but about her evolving relationship with Bailey. The mother and stepdaughter are forced to set out to discover what it is Owen was hiding, and quickly realise that it goes way beyond the financial fraud his company is accused of. As the tension builds, they don’t know who to believe or who they can trust, so they’re forced to depend on each other. In the end, the story deals with what it means to be a mother, protecting a child, and the child coming to terms with her world being turned upside down for the second time in her young life. Anyone who has taken on the role of stepmother will probably

identify with Hannah and Bailey’s relationship on many levels. This isn’t a fast-paced novel, but it moves along nicely. It’s told in the present using flashbacks to Hannah’s marriage to Owen. Hannah is a strong character, resilient and compassionate with authentic emotions. She’s also immensely practical and is not afraid to take matters into her own hands. There are numerous twists and turns, that take them from their home in California to Austin, Texas, and the truth when it comes is shockingly unexpected. The Suitcase Kid – Jacqueline Wilson (Illustrations by Nick Sharratt) Ten-year-old Andrea, known as Andy, is an only child who has always lived at Mulberry Cottage with her mum and dad. But when they split up, Andy has to say goodbye to her childhood home. She’s pushed from pillar to post by her parents as they struggle to work out a suitable visitation arrangement. She spends one week at her mum’s and one week at her dad’s. Suddenly she’s coping with the divorce, two new homes, and two new mis-matched families with stepbrothers and stepsisters, not all of whom are nice! She now has five siblings and nowhere to call home. No wonder Andy struggles to feel part of either family and craves her old home and life. Jacqueline Wilson is a consummate storyteller, with a real understanding of a child’s inner world. She tells the story poignantly, using Andy as the narrator, confiding her innermost thoughts and fears to the reader in language they can relate to. Can Andy overcome her feelings of not belonging, find new friends, family allies and a sense of belonging? T: 01403 780 823 M: 07825 285916 E: gbglazing@hotmail.com

Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) is where someone dies suddenly and unexpectedly from a cardiac arrest, but the cause of the cardiac arrest cannot be found. A cardiac arrest is where the heart suddenly stops pumping blood around your body. SADS can happen to anyone, no matter what their age, fitness or health and there are charities that are working hard to raise funds to find out exactly why this happens, but the answer is still unknown. Stephanie May-Hills is a resident of Billingshurst and tragically lost her husband Martin (pictured) to SADS in November 2021. Stephanie is determined to raise awareness about this syndrome and is taking on an incredible walking challenge starting on Sunday 22nd May with her brother Tom, to help raise funds in providing a defibrillator near to her home address in memory of her beloved husband Martin. The Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT) is also supporting Stephanie in her endeavours and once the defibrillator has been provided, BEAT has agreed to provide a cabinet, help look for a suitable location and will take over its future maintenance and upkeep. 2nd Billingshurst Guides: Monopoly Run 2022

O

n Saturday 5th March, Billingshurst Guides entered three teams to play ‘real-life’ monopoly all around central London. To play this version of the long-established game we had to visit the actual places on the monopoly board to check-in and buy/rent properties. We played against different teams from across the whole of the UK, in the race to reach the highest amount of money, done mainly by completing live challenges, quizzes and visiting properties in a strategic way. Places of highlight were Park Lane, Mayfair Trafalgar Square and Bond Street. The best part of the day was the intensity of rushing around London trying to win the competition. It was also

fantastic to see London with 5000 Guides and Scouts, it really helped to build the atmosphere and suspense throughout the game. One set challenge included making a human pyramid in our team, now that definitely turned a few heads! Overall, ‘live’ monopoly was an intense day full of coordination, collaboration and teamwork! Renegades go Kung Fu fighting…

t’s not just Bruce Lee, Carl Douglas and the loveable Po who go Kung Fu fighting… the Renegades are now taking up the challenge. Not just a brilliant defensive skill, Kung Fu also increases stamina, energy, balance and agility and teaches the children to learn focus and discipline. “The members told us that they wanted to learn a martial art and so, because we are driven by giving the children what they tell us they want, I did some research and found that kung fu was the first and its origin was Chinese,” says Group Leader Gareth Miller. “It literally means ‘achievement through great effort’ and so it was a good lesson for the kids.” Gareth was determined to find a genuinely Chinese Shifu, or master, and so met with Au Yeung Chi Chung in New Malden. Chi Chung, or Leo, is not only instructing Gareth how to teach the children but also will lead on a series of sessions. “The children are learning basic techniques of self defence and how to avoid confrontation, but it also teaches them how to calm themselves and get out of their own heads.” Despite being laid low for several weeks by a nasty bout of Covid, Gareth and fellow Group Leader Damian

Dixon have still managed to run a host of different things for the children – from carpentry and leatherworking sessions to a mad celebration of Shrove Tuesday with organised pancake tossing, a day trip to Brighton and of course the regular Sunday morning canoeing sessions. As we look forward to this very special summer, the Renegades are excited to announce that we have been awarded a new grant to finance the children putting on a roving, dramatic celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June. Watch this space for more details… you won’t see anything else like it! “People often ask why we put so much effort into Renegades, but the kids bring their own level of energy with them. I can be exhausted from a day’s work and after 10 minutes with them it’s like I’ve had a full night’s sleep and a meal. They are a tonic and well worth the effort,” says Gareth. The Renegades is a Registered Charity. Membership costs £10 a month. Please contact Gareth Miller on 07801 862550 or Damian Dixon on 07484 130189 for further information. Car Booty! A very British form of treasure hunt

L

ate spring is the time when car boot sales pop up all over the country. There is something very British about wandering through a field full of cars, poking around in cardboard boxes of other people’s belongings hunting for treasure. We probably all harbour a secret fantasy of appearing on Antiques Roadshow and saying brightly, “I bought it at a car boot sale for 10p,” just before the expert responds, “Well it’s actually a 17th century masterpiece, very rare and if it came to auction it would sell for thousands.” OK, that’s unlikely to happen but you might be able to refurnish your home and replenish your wardrobe for just a few pounds, and if you want to make a few pounds from your own decluttering and don’t mind an early start, holding a car boot sale can be quite lucrative. If you’re buying, the best deals are usually found at the beginning and end of the sale. The best quality items are usually found at the start, while the best prices are found as proceedings are drawng to a close and sellers are keen to sell. It helps to know broadly what items you intend to buy before arriving because it’s easy to get carried away. Haggling is expected, but don’t insult sellers by offering too little: items are generally very lowpriced to begin with. If you are going to sell at a car boot sale you need to be prepared. Decide whether your objective is to clear your clutter or make money: you can’t always do both. Remember no matter how cheaply you price your goods, people will haggle. You could

have a Rembrandt on sale for a pound and someone would offer you fifty pence! Price labels are useful. Block-price some items such as “all books fifty pence, three for a pound”. Clearly mark anything not included in the block pricing system. Take lots of change with you, plenty of carrier bags and some old newspapers with which to wrap fragile items. Going in with a friend is a good idea, both for the company and also to help out when either of you need to nip to the loo, or want to browse other stalls. Make sure you pack your table in the car last, so it’s the first item to come out and not buried under everything else. Be warned; on arrival at the sale ground you may be mobbed by a canny crowd of experienced ‘booters’ hunting for bargains. These folk tend to be dealers and they can be intimidating. They are after cheap buys to resell. Consider waiting in your car for a while to give them time to disappear before you unpack. Busy stalls attract more people so pile it high and sell it cheap. Welcome everyone who approaches your table with a warm smile and a cheery greeting. As the end of the day approaches, cut your prices on anything you don’t want to take home again. Whether buying or selling, with the current economic climate, and energy prices soaring, this could be a bumper year for car boot sales. People are much more clued up about collectables and antiques now, so it’s harder to find ‘real treasure’. But you never know, there’s always a chance we may see you on Antiques Roadshow! Heidi’s Happy Holiday

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

H

eidi the Schnauzer had been having a holiday on the small farm because her mum was poorly in hospital. Truth be told Heidi was having a great time. First of all, she could go outside any time she liked and although she didn’t go on many ‘real’ sort of walks she found herself busy, tired and starving at the end of the day. Of course, that didn’t mean she was left outside all day; she came in and huffed herself onto the sofa for serious snooze time whenever she wanted to. She’d been helping too, looking after Poppy who could be quite naughty, because she harassed Magnus who grizzle-growled at her all the time. Naturally, she had to put Poppy in her place occasionally but thought that the little one was shaping up quite nicely. She was also helping Nanny in the garden, supervising the completion of the little pond which looked quite smart with its fountain. She heard Nanny had used that fountain in lots of different ways over the years but this was the best. But her best helping came with supervising the builders who came to take away the old porch and put up a new and bigger one. She made sure Nanny gave them cups of tea because it was so cold and it even snowed. Now that the porch was bigger, there was more comfortable space in the sun. They all loved lying in the sun in the morning, and it wasn’t too hot (when it was warm) because it had a nice roof. There was one thing she wasn’t quite sure about. That was the time just after she had arrived when Grandad and Nanny packed the trailer full of stuff, harnessed the three dogs in the back seat and went on a long journey, nearly an hour and a half. When they stopped they were at the caravan. Nanny left them in the car which she and Grandad unpacked all the stuff (bags and bags of it). Then she took them for a proper walk. They went down to the

big field and had a good run. Then they came back and the humans had lunch. There were two things that Heidi wasn’t that happy with. One was the space and lack of it. They all had to share the two sofa chairs with Nanny and Grandad, and when it was food time it was agonizing when they didn’t share any with the dogs. But it wasn’t all bad… at night time Poppy had a cage on one sofa chair, Magnus had a bed on the floor and a blanket if he wanted to move and Heidi, perhaps because she was the biggest dog, had a whole sofa chair to herself so she could stretch out and have quality snooze time. The other thing was Nanny had to put them on leads to go out, even to the toilet! They went out on stretchy leads and Nanny couldn’t keep them straight. Poppy’s fault of course she darted back and forth and tangled them all up. So Nanny tied two dogs, Heidi and Poppy, on one lead and Magnus on the other. It still tangled but not nearly so much. Heidi really enjoyed making Poppy go at her pace and pushed and pulled her where Heidi wanted to go. Imagine going out at night. What a rigmarole! Nanny had to put on shoes, coat and head-torch, and ensured she had enough toilet bags in her pocket. Poppy and Magnus had to wear blinking collars. Opening the door was easy enough but then she had to keep Poppy in check while opening the awning door. Heidi thought the walk was worth it though because there were lots of new smells. Heidi was missing her mum a lot, and her cat Mr Darcy but, as she snuggled into bed at the end of a busy day, munching her bedtime biscuit she was very pleased she was having her holiday not in some kennels somewhere but on that small farm near Billingshurst. Wey & Arun Canal Trust to hold 49th ‘Poddle’ sponsored walk on 12th June

T

his year marks the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s 49th Poddle sponsored walk, the annual event that raises funds for the charity restoring the 23-mile abandoned canal in Surrey and Sussex. The event on Sunday 12th June this time travels beyond the Wey & Arun to explore the area known as the Hundred of Manhood, the ancient name for the peninsula south of Chichester. A 12-mile route in this scenic part of West Sussex begins in picturesque Sidlesham, taking in Sidlesham Quay and Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve in the morning and the former Selsey Tramway and Chichester Canal and Marina and back to Sidlesham in the afternoon. Walkers can complete the whole route or only the morning or afternoon route and lunch and refreshments are provided. Last year’s Poddle took place in the Loxwood area and raised £10,000. Funds from this year’s event will go towards the restoration project at

Birtley, near Bramley, where the Trust is set to build the second of two lift bridges and where a 1km circular canalside walk was opened earlier this year. Participants can also split their sponsorship with another charity of their choice when they enter as a team and raise more than £250 sponsorship (minimum £25 each). Organiser Margaret Darvill said the event was always a fun day for all. “The annual Poddle is a highlight of the year for the many members and non-members who take part and an important fundraiser for the Trust as we seek to restore more of the canal. The walk offers something for everyone and promises to be great day out.” To find out more and download a sponsorship form, please go to www.weyarun.org.uk. The Spaniel Diaries

S

o much going on this month! I have been a very busy dog indeed. I have been helping out in the garden by digging holes ready for new plants – well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it but mum isn’t terribly impressed and I’m sure she knows that I’m actually trying to gig up the pesky mice. I have also been guarding the barn from the rats and that meant rearranging several bales of hay while trying to find said rats. Again, mum wasn’t impressed as she’s saving hay for the grass munchers although they have assured me that they actually prefer the nice sweet green grass; I’m partial to a few mouthfuls myself at this time of the year too. I have to say that the horse poo is also a real delicacy at the moment and is just as good to eat as it is to roll in. Mav managed to find a nice bit of fox poo to roll in and oh how I laughed when he got hosed off by mum – he hates being hosed, I must find some more smelly things to suggest to him for a good roll! Mum is busy having what she calls a spring clean, she thinks she’s de-cluttering but it looks to me like she’s just moving things from one place to another! I don’t know why she doesn’t just bury it all in the garden like I do when I get bored with a toy or chew. She has taken a few bits to the charity shop, I must check she’s not trying to sneak any of my things away without me noticing, especially my blankets of which I have quite the extensive collection. Our training sessions have become more frequent now the evenings are long and we are meeting up with friends from the training club again – I have to indulge mum in this and I’ve found that if I do something really well mum seems

Kevocal l r u o y endly fri en ov er clean

very pleased and the session ends quicker allowing me more important time to dawdle and sniff things. Mav of course is teachers favourite, he’s just such a little goody two shoes, the idiot cannot get enough of running off after yucky canvas dummies and mum seems delighted with him. She keeps mentioning things called scurries and is including Mav’s name but not mine. If she thinks I’m looning off at speed looking for dummies she can think again – how undignified! We have been having some super walks lately too and the pub lunches are now a feature. Mum says they are mainly to get Mav used to people as he missed out on that as a puppy due to the nasty virus that people were catching for the last couple of years but I know it’s really because she loves her food and those posh hot chocolates they do, which she won’t even give us dogs a sniff of! We are relegated to boring old Bonios! Mum was not impressed by my new trick of barking at waiters dressed in black either and I was reminded that it’s not at all polite. Mav is getting used to the pub and starting to relax and enjoy himself so I really should lead by example and give the woofing a miss! One word of warning mum has asked me to tell everyone about: sadly there has been a spate of nasty people breaking into cars parked at beauty spots across Sussex. We all know how dog walkers love to get out in the countryside so please, people, be vigilant and don’t leave any valuables in your car while walking your pooches – although we all know your biggest valuable – us dogs – will be by your side while you are walking! Until next time, stay safe. Jeannette Douglas

Billingshurst Fire Station Charity Car Wash

O

n 24th March we held our annual charity car wash at the Fire Station in aid of the Firefighters Charity, the amazing organisation that looks after and offers support to Firefighters and their loved ones during times of hardship. With the combined hard work of the crew and the incredible generosity of the public, over £1000 was raised which will go a long way to helping those in need. We can’t thank you all enough for your kindness and support. We will be holding similar events in the future – please be on the lookout for dates! As we begin to slowly emerge from the pandemic and restrictions are lifted, we would like to take this time to remind everyone about the free Safe and Well Service that we offer. We are particularly interested in identifying and helping members in our community who may be vulnerable and would benefit from fire safety advice. If you think you or someone you know would like a visit from us, please e-mail safeandwell@westsussex.gov.uk. Additionally, we are currently reviewing the possibility of future recruitment plans, so if you are interested in the role of a Retained Firefighter please do get in

touch. It is a requirement to live or work (we require employer’s consent if responding from work) within four minutes of the Fire Station. If you meet these criteria and would like to have a chat with us about what it takes to become a Retained Firefighter, please e-mail FRSJOBS@westsussex.gov.uk who can register your details and put you in contact with us. We are particularly interested in those who can provide daytime cover during the weekdays. Lastly, as the weather starts to improve, we would like to remind everyone on the dangers of disposable barbecues. As a station we have responded to several fires already this year that have been caused by the incorrect disposable of barbecue ashes. These fires have involved bins, bushes and grassland and start when the disposed ashes haven’t had enough time to cool down. To ensure the barbecue is disposed of safely, allow enough time for it to cool down before adding water. Noise Anxiety Loud bangs like thunder, gunfire, fireworks can cause pets real stress. Sometimes the stress is severe and can lead to your pet running off. Here’s a few tips:• Start a desensitisation programme with your dog – the Dogs Trust have one called ‘Sounds Scary’. It’s free, has instructions with sounds to download. Not a quick fix, but it can work. • To keep your dog safe on a walk pop a long line on them, (a long lead that trails behind them). If they show signs of stress quickly put your foot on the lead, distract them and if necessary choose a different route to go back to the car. Always end a walk on a positive note. Most importantly try not to show your dog that you’re stressed and don’t interact with them when they are. • Check your contact details are up-to-date with your microchip provider. Check your surname, phone number and postcode are on your dog’s tag. If your dog does run off the finder will be able to contact you. • If your pet is still struggling then contact your vet or a behaviourist for further help. Sophie Hall B.V.Sc., M.R.C.V.S.

hen we think about climbing plants, we most often think about growing them to cover a wall or a fence. We might think about growing them over a dead tree stump too, but one of the nicest ways to grow them is through a living tree or a shrub. It’s an excellent way of providing more interest in the same space, either by timing each plant’s display so they follow on from each other, or by timing the flowering so they bloom at the same time, thus doubling the impact of the display. There are a few rules you need to follow when you plant a climber with the intention of growing it up a living host. First, the host shrub or tree should be established, woody, and strong enough to hold up the climber’s weight when it’s fully grown and flowering. Second you don’t want to use too vigorous a climber, otherwise it might swamp the host. Finally, avoid fast-growing evergreen climbers because they prevent light getting to the host, and may cause it to develop disease and die. You can certainly use less aggressive evergreens such as the ivy Hedera ‘pedata’ or Hedera ‘Curlylocks’ around the base of wellestablished trees. These will look beautiful without overwhelming the structure and flowering of the host plant. Climbers that look good over trees and shrubs are typically, clematis, honeysuckle, and roses. Look for species that grow to 3m or less as these

are ideal for growing up most garden trees. Species that are cut back to 15-20cm every winter are also ideal. Clematis ‘Abundance’, ‘Etoile Violette’ and ‘Little Nell’ are all good choices. Honeysuckle can often be seen (and smelled) growing through trees in the wild. For your garden look for cultivars of the common honeysuckle, such as Lonicera periclymenum. Rambling roses can grow to monstrous proportions, so look for smaller varieties such as ‘City of York’ and ‘Parade’, which also have a long season of interest. If you have a cool moist area try growing the perennial nasturtium, Tropaeolum speciosum. The jewelcoloured flowers will brighten a darker space. Tips for successful pairing • Don’t plant the climber too close to the base of the host or they will be competing for the same water and nutrients. • Counterintuitively plant the climber on the shadier side of the host. That way the climber will be forced to grow towards the light. • If you plant the climber in a large plastic pot with the bottom cut out, it helps contain the plant and reduces competition. What to do if you find a swarm of honey bees

www.bygonegardening.com

Swarming is a natural instinct for bees and all colonies if left to their own devices will eventually swarm. This is part of their means of reproduction; if they didn’t there would be no bees. The swarm has to find a new home but in the meantime it will find a branch, fence or a gate to hang off. Worker bees scout around until they find a suitable tree, chimney or roof space and then return to the swarm to show them the way to their new home. This can take a few minutes or a couple of days. Prior to leaving the nest they will fill up with honey to last them on their journey, so they need to find somewhere before they get hungry. Swarms of bees are not normally aggressive but best not approached, sprayed with water or have things thrown at them. The best course of action is to call a local beekeeper who can re-home them safely. There are several beekeepers in our area but the best place to check is the BBKA website www.bbka.org.uk. There you can put in your post code and all the local collectors will be listed. Or you can call 07966 509424. Martin Hill, Loxwood

Spring at last! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

A

t last, dear reader, we have the joy of summer knocking at our door. The lovely month of May has arrived with the glory of blossom on the bough and the promise of fruit for the autumn to come. May also heralds the early visitors that join us each year as the weather warms and the days extend. Some we welcome, while others we would gladly see the back of as soon as they arrive. Aphids chomp merrily on the fresh green leaves of virtually every plant, shrub, and tree in the garden, while freshly hatched caterpillars make merry on our newly planted vegetables or delicately inter themselves in the flesh of new born apples and plums to await our surprise when we find them again as we bite into the juicy flesh at harvest time. There is one critter, though, that I am particularly fond of. Some folk I know are not so keen on it… but I will try here to change their minds. I refer to the Maybug… or Maybeetle… or Doodlebug. Its correct name is Cockchafer. I just love the bumbling flight that these large members of the Scarabaeidae family have as they bump and blunder their way round a room like living dodgem cars on warm May evenings. Completely harmless to us, they just give the appearance of miniature flying machines which are being guided by a pilot who is either blindfolded or has spent far too long at the pub before heading homewards. They do, however, have a very interesting history. Once abundant throughout Europe they were nearly eradicated in the middle of the 20th century through pesticides and agricultural intensification. Thankfully with the regulation of pest control in the 1980’s they have started to increase in numbers again. Way back in time cockchafers lived in huge numbers which gave rise to some bizarre events. In 1320 for instance, after heavy swarms of them had almost reached plague proportions cockchafers were

brought to court in Avignon and were actually given three days to withdraw to specified areas. Of course they didn’t, so… after the allotted time… as many as possible were collected and killed! (Apparently it was not an uncommon event in those days for wayward animals to be taken to court in ‘Animal Trials’). So, anyway, what about these blundering insects. Adults appear in late April or early May and only live from five to seven weeks. The females start to lay after two weeks, burying their eggs up to 20cm in the earth close to trees. Their preferred food is oak leaves and conifer needles hence in the old days of large swarms they could do great damage to forestry crops. The young hatch into grubs and live from three to five years before changing into their adult form. As youngsters, though, they spend their time chomping on plant roots and would indeed do harm to any potato or similar root crop if they should once more explode into large numbers. The way to tell the males from the females is the number of ‘leaves’ on their antennas. The males have seven (see photo), the females just six. So there it is. A potted history of this gentle, bumbling beetle that I look forward to seeing once more as the days lengthen and the warm summer evenings return. By the way, if you are not so fond of them you can try this 19th century recipe from France: Take one pound of cockchafers, remove wings and legs and roast in butter. Then cook in chicken soup, add veal liver, and serve with chives on toast. How about that for an evening snack! Or from 1920, a German recipe suggests that sugarcoated cockchafers made ideal snacks for hungry students! This, I suggest, is more likely to be enjoyed as I seem to recall that most students will eat anything! Personally, I’m happy just listening to one of them clumping, buzzing and bumping his way round the bedroom as he searches for the open window! How about you? John Nash

Knobbed Russet An occasional mini-series on apple varieties… So far the apples I’ve shown are relatively pretty… or at least look edible. Today’s may not be so appetising to you all. This is the aptly named Knobby or Knobbed Russet also known as Winter Russet and Old Maids. Many say that it resembles a potato more than an apple, sometimes called the worlds ugliest apple. However, the taste of this fruit is quite pleasant. The flesh is cream coloured, fine textured and dense, and although it’s not particularly juicy it does have a sweet flavour with hints of spice and citrus.

It’s picked very late, October at the earliest, and stores very well, keeping for up to four months if kept cool. It was discovered in Sussex in 1820 by Haslar Capron who gave it to the London Horticultural Society. It can still be found in specialist nurseries although it can be a difficult apple to grow well. I can well understand why it never took off – can you see this on display in Tesco? No, neither can I. Point of interest… Haslar Capron lived in Lodsworth, Midhurst. John Nash
