Wey & Arun Canal Trust to hold 49th ‘Poddle’ sponsored walk on 12th June
T
his year marks the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s 49th Poddle sponsored walk, the annual event that raises funds for the charity restoring the 23-mile abandoned canal in Surrey and Sussex. The event on Sunday 12th June this time travels beyond the Wey & Arun to explore the area known as the Hundred of Manhood, the ancient name for the peninsula south of Chichester. A 12-mile route in this scenic part of West Sussex begins in picturesque Sidlesham, taking in Sidlesham Quay and Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve in the morning and the former Selsey Tramway and Chichester Canal and Marina and back to Sidlesham in the afternoon. Walkers can complete the whole route or only the morning or afternoon route and lunch and refreshments are provided. Last year’s Poddle took place in the Loxwood area and raised £10,000. Funds from this year’s event will go towards the restoration project at

Birtley, near Bramley, where the Trust is set to build the second of two lift bridges and where a 1km circular canalside walk was opened earlier this year. Participants can also split their sponsorship with another charity of their choice when they enter as a team and raise more than £250 sponsorship (minimum £25 each). Organiser Margaret Darvill said the event was always a fun day for all. “The annual Poddle is a highlight of the year for the many members and non-members who take part and an important fundraiser for the Trust as we seek to restore more of the canal.
